Magnesium oxide nanoparticles reduce clubroot by regulating plant defense response and rhizosphere microbial community of tumorous stem mustard (Brassica juncea var. tumida).

Clubroot, caused by Plasmodiophora brassicae, is a major disease that significantly impairs the yield of cruciferous crops and causes significant economic losses across the globe. The prevention of clubroot, especially in tumorous stem mustard (without resistant varieties), are is limited and primarily relies on fungicides. Engineered nanoparticles have opened up new avenues for the management of plant diseases, but there is no report on their application in the prevention of clubroot. The results showed that the control efficacy of 500 mg/L MgO NPs against clubroot was 54.92%. However, when the concentration was increased to 1,500 and 2,500 mg/L, there was no significant change in the control effect. Compared with CK, the average fresh and dry weight of the aerial part of plants treated with MgO NPs increased by 392.83 and 240.81%, respectively. Compared with the F1000 treatment, increases were observed in the content of soil available phosphorus (+16.72%), potassium (+9.82%), exchangeable magnesium (+24.20%), and water-soluble magnesium (+20.64%) in the 1,500 mg/L MgO NPs treatment. The enzyme-linked immune sorbent assay (ELISA) results showed that the application of MgO NPs significantly increased soil peroxidase (POD, +52.69%), alkaline protease (AP, +41.21%), alkaline phosphatase (ALP, +79.26%), urease (+52.69%), and sucrase (+56.88%) activities; And also increased plant L-phenylalanine ammonla-lyase (PAL, +70.49%), polyphenol oxidase (PPO, +36.77%), POD (+38.30%), guaiacol peroxidase (POX, +55.46%) activities and salicylic acid (SA, +59.86%) content. However, soil and plant catalase (CAT, -27.22 and - 19.89%, respectively), and plant super oxidase dismutase (SOD, -36.33%) activities were significantly decreased after the application of MgO NPs. The metagenomic sequencing analysis showed that the MgO NPs treatments significantly improved the α-diversity of the rhizosphere soil microbial community. The relative abundance of beneficial bacteria genera in the rhizosphere soil, including Pseudomonas, Sphingopyxis, Acidovorax, Variovorax, and Bosea, was significantly increased. Soil metabolic functions, such as oxidative phosphorylation (ko00190), carbon fixation pathways in prokaryotes (ko00720), indole alkaloid biosynthesis (ko00901), and biosynthesis of various antibiotics (ko00998) were significantly enriched. These results suggested that MgO NPs might control clubroot by promoting the transformation and utilization of soil nutrients, stimulating plant defense responses, and enriching soil beneficial bacteria.

Soil Nutrient Analysis of High Standard Farmland Construction in Fengxiang Area

In order to ensure China's grain output and food security, we should upgrade the grade of farmland, increase farmers' income, and realize the storage of grain in the land and the storage of grain in technology. While promoting the planning tasks of high-standard farmland construction projects issued by the state and Shaanxi Province, through the determination of soil nutrient indicators in the proposed high-standard farmland area in Fengxiang District, it is pointed out that the average content of soil organic matter in the study area was 12.18 g/kg, which was relatively insufficient as a whole; the average content of soil available nitrogen was 149.45 mg/kg, which was relatively abundant as a whole; the average content of soil available phosphorus was 8.94 mg/kg, which was also relatively insufficient as a whole; and the average content of soil available potassium was 124.82 mg/kg. The whole is moderate. To sum up, after appropriately increasing the content of organic matter and phosphorus, the newly built high-standard farmland can meet the demand for soil nutrients for food crop growth and meet the requirements of high-standard farmland construction in Northwest China.

Application potential of modified waste-lignin as microbial immobilization carriers for improve soil fertility

The immobilized microorganism technology is used to load the functional microorganism on a suitable carrier to maintain its biological activity, resist the impact of adverse environment. In this study, chemical modification of lignin side chain phenolic hydroxyl groups was carried out to increase the content of amide functional groups and enhance their adsorption and fixation effects on microorganisms due to the numerous active sites in the structure of discarded lignin, and studied its impact on microbial activity and crop growth. The results show that the modified lignin could be effectively combined with functional microorganisms, and the proposed bio-composite material was an effective method for cell protection. In addition, it was shown that functional microorganisms maintained high biological activity by immobilization of modified lignin, which was 34.3–41.0% higher than that of CK. Moreover, the technology could increase the total nitrogen content and available phosphorus content in soil by 70.8% and 64.4%, respectively, compared with CK. Therefore, it could increase eventually wheat growth indices and biomass. The completed research opens new perspectives for the effective immobilization of microorganisms and utilization of wasted lignin of significant economic importance.

Impact of Interaction between Biochar and Soil Microorganisms on Growth of Chinese Cabbage by Increasing Soil Fertility

We investigated the improvement of cabbage growth through the interaction of biochar, which can promote microbial activity, with the microbes in the soil. An increase in cabbage growth could be detected in soil with biochar or soil microbes, but the fresh weight of cabbage in soil supplemented with both biochar and microbes was 8.8% and 5% higher, respectively, than that with either microbes or biochar alone. The phosphorus content in Chinese cabbage was also increased by 36.3% when compared with the control without the addition of biochar and microbes. Such an improvement on cabbage growth is closely related to the soil amelioration. The application of biochar in soil significantly stimulated the growth of soil microbes and further altered the microbial community structure in soil. When 2% biochar and microbes were simultaneously applied in soil, the content of the organic matter and available phosphorus content in soil was 36.7% and 45.5% higher, respectively, than that in soil with or without biochar. The maximal increment in the available potassium content was observed in the soil supplemented with both 5% biochar and soil microbes, which was 46.4% higher than that in soil without the addition of biochar and microbes. Both phosphatase and urease activity in soil were also increased by 61.2% and 49.4%, respectively, by applying 2% biochar in soil together with microbes, as the interaction of biochar with the microbes could promote the activity of soil microbes and enzymes which resulted in an improvement in soil fertility. The interaction of biochar with microbes in soil could promote the plant growth of Chinese cabbage by increasing the soil fertility.

Differential effects of cow dung and its biochar on Populus euphratica soil phosphorus effectiveness, bacterial community diversity and functional genes for phosphorus conversion.

Continuous monoculture leading to soil nutrient depletion may cause a decline in plantation productivity. Cow dung is typically used as a cheap renewable resource to improve soil nutrient status. In this study, our purpose was to compare the effects of different cow dung return methods (direct return and carbonization return) on soil microbial communities and phosphorus availability in the root zone (rhizosphere soil and non-rhizosphere soil) of P.euphratica seedlings in forest gardens and to explore possible chemical and microbial mechanisms. Field experiments were conducted. Two-year-old P.euphratica seedlings were planted in the soil together with 7.5 t hm-2 of cow dung and biochar made from the same amount of cow dung. Our findings indicated that the available phosphorus content in soil subjected to biochar treatment was considerably greater than that directly treated with cow dung, leading to an increase in the phosphorus level of both aboveground and underground components of P.euphratica seedlings. The content of Olsen-P in rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soil increased by 134% and 110%, respectively.This was primarily a result of the direct and indirect impact of biochar on soil characteristics. Biochar increased the biodiversity of rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soil bacteria compared with the direct return of cow dung. The Shannon diversity index of carbonized cow manure returning to field is 1.11 times and 1.10 times of that of direct cow manure returning to field and control, and the Chao1 diversity index is 1.20 times and 1.15 times of that of direct cow manure returning to field and control.Compared to the direct addition of cow dung, the addition of biochar increased the copy number of the phosphorus functional genes phoC and pqqc in the rhizosphere soil. In the biochar treatment, the abundance of the phosphate-solubilizing bacteria Sphingomonas and Lactobacillus was significantly higher than that in the other treatments, it is relative abundance was 4.83% and 2.62%, respectively, which indirectly improved soil phosphorus availability. The results indicated that different cow dung return methods may exert different effects on phosphorus availability in rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils via chemical and microbial pathways. These findings indicated that, compared to the direct return of cow dung, biochar return may exert a more significant impact on the availability of phosphorus in both rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils, as well as on the growth of P.euphratica seedlings and the microbial community.

Effect of different NPK fertilization timing sequences management on soil-petiole system nutrient uptake and fertilizer utilization efficiency of drip irrigation cotton

In order to elucidate the effects of different nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) fertilization timing sequences management on nutrient absorption and utilization in drip irrigation cotton, field experiments were conducted from 2020 to 2021. There are six timing sequences management methods for NPK fertilization (S1–S6: 1/3Time N–1/3Time PK–1/3Time W, 1/3Time PK–1/3Time N–1/3Time W, 1/2Time NPK–1/2Time W, 1/4Time W–1/4Time N–1/4Time PK–1/4Time W, 1/3Time W–1/3Time NPK–1/3Time W), among which S6 is the current management method for field fertilization timing sequences, and S7 is the non N. The results showed that during the main growth stage, S5 accumulated more nitrate nitrogen (NO3–-N) and ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N) content in soil between 20 and 40 cm, and accumulated more available phosphorus content in soil between 5–15 cm and 15–25 cm, S5 reducing N leaching and increasing P mobility. It is recommended to change the timing sequences management method of NPK fertilization for drip irrigation cotton to 1/4Time W–1/4Time PK–1/4Time N–1/4Time W, which is beneficial for plant nutrient absorption and utilization while reducing environmental pollution.

Inference of Rock Phosphate, Phosphorus Solubilizing Bacteria and Lime on Phosphorus Content and Economic Yield of Green Gram

Aim: To study the effect of Rock Phosphate, Phosphorus Solubilizing Bacteria, and Lime on phosphorus content in the soil, Phosphorus Uptake, and Economic yield of green gram (var. DGGS-4).
 Study Design: This experiment was conducted through a completely randomized design with 10 treatments and 3 replications.
 Place and Duration of Study: The research was conducted at the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Chemistry, Central Agricultural University, Imphal between February 2019- November 2019.
 Methodology: Available phosphorus content in soil was estimated spectrophotometrically by Bray and Kurtz No. 1 method, the Active Phosphorus was determined by the addition of Saloid-bound phosphate, Aluminum phosphate, iron phosphate, and calcium phosphate, and total Inorganic P is the summation of all the inorganic forms of P. Total Phosphorus (Total P) in Soil was estimated by using Murphy-Riley solution and 5M NaOH and the intensity of yellow color was read at 730 nm in a spectrophotometer, organic P was calculated from the difference between total phosphorus and total mineral P, and the uptake of phosphorus was computed from the data on P concentration and dry matter yield.
 Results: The release and fixation pattern of different forms of phosphorus, its uptake, and the economic yield of green gram were significantly affected by the application of rock phosphate singly or combination with PSB and lime. Comparing among the different treatments, significantly higher accumulation of available Phosphorus, Phosphorus uptake, and economic yield were recorded in soil treated with Rock phosphate in combination with Phosphocare, Bacillus megatherium, and lime which is at par with treatment with Rock phosphate in combination with Bacillus megatherium and lime.
 Conclusion: The investigation revealed that the release and fixation pattern of different forms of phosphorus, its uptake, and the yield of green gram are significantly affected by the application of RP singly or combination with PSB and lime.

Degradation of betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase transgenic maize BZ-136 straw and its effects on soil nutrients and fungal community.

The development of salt-alkali tolerant genetically modified crops represents an important approach to increase grain production in saline-alkali soils. However, there is a paucity of research on the impact of such genetically modified crops on soil microbial diversity. This study aims to investigate the straw degradation of betaine aldehyde dehydrogenase (BADH) transgenic maize BZ-136 and its effects on soil chemical properties, fungal community composition, community diversity and ecological function compared to non-transgenic maize Zheng58 straw. The degradation experiments of BZ-136 straw were carried out under a simulated burying condition with saline-alkali soil for 210 days. The results showed that the degradation rate of C and N of BZ-136 straw was significantly faster than that of Zheng58 in the early stage (p < 0.05). Compared to Zheng58, the straw degradation of BZ-136 increased the soil available nitrogen (AN), total phosphorus (TP), and available phosphorus (AP) in the early stage (p < 0.05). The AN content of soil with BZ-136 straw was 18.16 and 12.86% higher than that of soil with Zheng58 at day 60 and 120 (p < 0.05). The TP content of soil with BZ-136 was higher 20.9 and 20.59% than that with Zheng58 at day 30 and 90 (p < 0.05). The AP content of soil with BZ-136 was 53.44% higher than that with Zheng58 at day 60 (p < 0.05). The straw degradation of BZ-136 increased the OTU number of soil fungal community by 127 (p < 0.05) at day 60, and increased Chao1 and Shannon index at day 60 and 180 (p < 0.05). The degradation rate of C and N in BZ-136 straw was higher than that in Zheng58 at early stage, which led to the phased increase of soil AN and TP contents, and the obvious changes of relative abundances (RA) of some genera and guilds. These findings are important as they provide insight into the potential benefits of BADH transgenic crops in upgrading the soil fertility and the fungal community diversity.

Potential effect of key soil bacterial taxa on the increase of rice yield under milk vetch rotation.

Legume crop rotation is often adopted in rice cultivation to improve soil productivity. However, little is known about the role of microbes under legume rotation in affecting soil productivity. To elucidate this, a long-term paddy cropping experiment was set up to study the relationship between crop yield, soil chemical properties, and key microbial taxa under a double-rice and milk vetch rotation. Milk vetch rotation significantly improved soil chemical properties compared to no fertilization treatment, and soil phosphorus was a major factor correlated with crop yield. Long-term legume rotation increased soil bacterial alpha diversity and changed soil bacterial community. After milk vetch rotation, the relative abundances of Bacteroidota, Desulfobacterota, Firmicutes, and Proteobacteria increased while those of Acidobacteriota, Chloroflexi, and Planctomycetota decreased. Moreover, milk vetch rotation increased the relative abundance of phosphorus-related gene K01083 (bpp), which was significantly correlated with soil phosphorus content and crop yield. Network analysis showed that taxa of Vicinamibacterales were positively correlated with total phosphorus and available phosphorus, which was a potential taxon contributing to the availability of soil phosphorus stock. Our results indicated that milk vetch rotation could enrich key taxa with latent phosphate-solubilizing ability, increase the content of soil available phosphorus, and finally enhance crop yield. This could provide scientific guidance for better crop production.

Influences of biochar with selenite on bacterial community in soil and Cd in peanut

Cadmium (Cd) pollution in crops seriously affects the ecosystem and human health. Effective measures should be employed to reduce the absorption and accumulation of cadmium in crops. Currently, there are many pieces of research on the application of biochar (BC) and selenium (Se) alone to the remediation of soil Cd pollution; however, few investigations have been devoted to the application of BC and Se together to the remediation of soil Cd pollution. The peanut was taken as the target crop to explore the effects of exogenous selenium and biochar on the remediation of soil Cd pollution. The response of the soil bacterial community to two levels of Cd concentration and its relationship with soil properties and Cd availability are methodically investigated. This study sets two cadmium pollution concentrations of low Cd (5 mg/ kg) and high Cd (20 mg/kg), as well as six treatments: blank, BC, soil Se, soil Se-BC, leaf Se, and leaf Se-BC. The achieved results revealed that both Se and BC could noticeably enhance the yield of peanut seeds and reduce the Cd content in peanut seeds. Among them, Se-BC treatment on soil exhibits the most influence, which reduces the Cd content by 47.86%. Se and BC also affect the physical and chemical properties of soil and remarkably magnify the content of soil available phosphorus, organic matter, soil pH, and soil conductivity. For instance, then effect is detected in the case of applying selenium biochar to soil, leading to an increase of about 64.38%, 72.62%, 2.64%, and 61.15%, respectively, and reducing the content of soil available cadmium by 21.02%. Redundancy analysis confirms that these properties enhance the abundance of dominant bacteria Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Chloroflexi. The correlation analysis also indicates that Saccharimonadales, Bacillus, Arthrobacter, and other bacteria with the function of reducing the bioavailability of cadmium in soil reveal a considerable positive correlation with the variations of physical and chemical properties. In general, exogenous Se and BC incorporate to drop the content of available Cd in the soil through direct passivation, passivation caused by soil environmental change, and passivation caused by altering the soil microbial community structure; as a result, the migration and enrichment of Cd in peanut seeds are blocked and reduced. Moreover, the mixed application of BC and soil Se exhibits the best effect.

Comparison of Physicochemical and Biological Soil Properties in Organic and Conventional Upland Fields

Application of organic farming system has been increased recently but change of soil properties due to organic farming system has not been thoroughly studied. The main purpose of this study was to compare physicochemical and biological soil properties between conventional and organic farming system and to identify the most affected soil parameters for two different farming system. Soil samples were collected from upland fields that have been using conventional or organic farming system for over five years. Then, physicochemical and biological soil properties were determined, including bulk density, porosity, pH, electrical conductivity (EC), cation exchange capacity (CEC), soil organic matter, total nitrogen (T-N), available phosphorus, soil respiration, and soil enzyme activities. For soil physical perspective, soils from organic farming system had lower bulk density and higher porosity values than conventional farming system. This result indicate that organic farming system had beneficial effect on soil physical properties. In case of soil chemical properties, the available phosphorus content in soil from conventional farming system was higher than in organic farming system probably due to the continuous use of inorganic fertilizers containing phosphorus in the arable area. For soil biological properties, β-glucosidase and phosphatase activities were higher under conventionally managed soils than organic farming system. Overall, physicochemical and biological soil properties can be varied depending on differently managed farming system and long terms of monitoring is necessary for understanding the change of soil properties between organic and conventional farming system.Soil properties including a) bulk density, b) soil organic matter content, c) β-glucosidase activity, and d) urease activity (CF, conventional farming; OF, organic farming).

Changes in Soil Phosphorus Availability and Microbial Community Structures in Rhizospheres of Oilseed Rapes Induced by Intercropping with White Lupins

Oilseed rape is sensitive to soil phosphorus deficiencies. In contrast, white lupin is widely used as a model plant because it has efficient phosphorus utilization. Therefore, soil fertility and microbial composition in the rhizospheres of oilseed rapes and root exudate metabolites were compared under monocropping and intercropping systems. The main purpose was to explore whether the phosphorus absorption of rapeseed can be promoted by intercropping with white lupine. In comparison with oilseed rape monoculture (RR), the results showed that the contents of soil-available phosphorus, microbial biomass and phosphorus in the rhizospheres of oilseed rapes in the intercropping system (RL) were all higher than those of RR. Meanwhile, in comparison with RR, not only phosphorus-solubilizing bacteria, such as Streptomyces, Actinomadura and Bacillus, but also phosphorus-solubilizing fungi, such as Chaetomium, Aspergillus, Penicillium, were enriched in the rhizospheres of the oilseed rape under the RL system. Moreover, more abundant soil bacterial functions, organic acids and metabolites were also detected in root exudates of the oilseed rapes under the RL system. All of the above results suggest that soil phosphorus availability in the rhizospheres of oilseed rape could be improved by intercropping with white lupin. Additionally, soil phosphorus-solubilizing microorganisms, that are enriched in the rhizospheres of oilseed rapes under RL systems, have an important function in the improvement of phosphorus absorption of rapeseed by intercropping with white lupin.

Siderophores, a potential phosphate solubilizer from the endophyte Streptomyces sp. CoT10, improved phosphorus mobilization for host plant growth and rhizosphere modulation

Available phosphorus (AP) deficiency in soil is an important limiting factor in agricultural and forestry production. Thus, microbes with high P mobilization capacity are of great concern, especially for acidic soil where most P is fixed by Fe. Camellia oleifera is a typical acidic soil–planted oil crop with a high status in forestry economic systems in China. In this study, Streptomyces sp. CoT10 was screened and identified from C. oleifera endophytes. CoT10 could effectively mobilize different P resources, particularly showing a high solubility of 72.49 mg L−1 for FePO4, and was prominent in the production of different siderophores. Here, we initially assumed and confirmed that the Fe–P mobilization function of CoT10 was directly mediated by its siderophores. Application of CoT10 in C. oleifera could benefit P fraction transformation by mobilizing insoluble P and Fe, thus improving 15.35% AP content in soil and promoting plant growth with high P and Fe acquisition. In addition, CoT10 inoculation improved microbial diversity, with the proportions of some dominant groups, such as Actinobacteria, Proteobacteria, and Firmicutes, obviously enriched by 21.32%, 7.93%, and 38.95%, respectively. In addition, redundancy analysis (RDA), network analysis and functional prediction indicated that CoT10 inoculation improved the microbial interactions in C. oleifera rhizosphere soil and balanced the soil microbial P- and Fe-related functional roles. The results of Streptomyces sp. CoT10 and its siderophores provide a valuable approach to regulate P mobilization in iron-rich soil for the sustainable and eco-friendly development of plant-related industries.

Changes in Rhizosphere Soil Fungal Communities of Pinus tabuliformis Plantations at Different Development Stages on the Loess Plateau.

The soil fungal community is an important factor in the forest ecosystems, and a better understanding of its composition and dynamic changes will contribute to the maintenance, preservation, and sustainable development of the forest ecosystems. Pinus tabuliformis has been widely planted for local ecological restoration on the Loess Plateau in China in recent decades. However, these plantations have been degraded to different degrees with increasing stand age. Hence, we tried to find the possible causes for the plantation degradation by analyzing soil environmental changes and soil fungal community composition at different stand ages. We collected rhizosphere soil samples from young (10-year-old), middle-aged (20-year-old), and near-mature (30-year-old) P. tabuliformis plantations in this region and characterized their soil properties and soil fungal community diversity and composition. Our results showed that with increasing stand age, the contents of organic carbon, ammonium nitrogen (AN) and nitrate nitrogen (NN) in the soil increased significantly, while the content of available phosphorus (AP) decreased significantly. The main factors affecting the composition of the soil fungal community were the contents of AP, AN, and NN in the soil. In addition, the genus Suillus was the dominant ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungus in all periods of P. tabuliformis plantations in this region. The results of structural equation modeling showed that the community composition of ECM fungi was significantly correlated with stand age, soil NN, and AP contents, and that of pathogenic (PAG) fungi was significantly correlated with soil AN and AP contents. The decrease in the relative abundance of ECM fungi and the increase in the relative abundance of PAG fungi would exacerbate the degradation of P. tabulaeformis plantation. Our results illustrated that the content of soil AP is not only an important factor limiting the development of plantations, but it also significantly affects the community composition of soil fungi in the rhizosphere of the P. tabuliformis plantation. This study provides a novel insight into the degradation of P. tabuliformis plantations and builds a solid foundation for their subsequent management, restoration, and sustainable development on the Loess Plateau of China.

Effects of reducing chemical fertilizers combined with organic fertilizers on soil microbial community in litchi orchards

Organic fertilizer application can replace a part of chemical fertilizer (CF) to improve the quality and efficiency of litchi production. To further explore the soil microbiological mechanism, with 19-year-old 'Feizixiao' litchi trees as the research objects, we examined the effects of two consecutive years of reduced CF applications (average 21.5% of total nutrients) combined with sheep manure (OF) and bio-organic fertilizers (BIO) on soil microbial diversity, community composition and differential microorganisms. The results showed that reducing the application of chemical fertilizers and combining it with the application of sheep manure and bio-organic fertilizer for two consecutive years could significantly improve yield and quality. The average increase of yield in the two years was 23.1% and 39.0%, respectively. Soil organic matter content and pH increased significantly in response to the combination treatments. Compared to that in the chemical fertilizer treatment, the contents of soil available phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, copper, and zinc displayed an increasing trend in the combination treatments. The application of organic fertilizer increased the diversity of bacteria and fungi in rhizosphere soil, but not in non-rhizosphere soil. Both treatments significantly changed soil microbial community structure, increased eutrophic bacterial groups such as Bacteroides, Proteobacteria, and Bacillus phylum, and reduced anatrophic bacterial groups such as Acidobacteria and Chloroflexus. Compared with CF, the relative abundances of MND1 under OF and TK10, Gemmatimonas, Pseudolabrys, Trichoderma and Botryotrichum under BIO were significantly increased, which was positively correlated with yield. In conclusion, reducing CF and applying organic ferti-lizer for two consecutive years could effectively improve soil pH and nutrient availability, increase rhizosphere microbial richness and diversity, change soil microbial community structure, and shape microbial communities being more conducive to yield and quality improvement.

Effects of rare earth elements on bacteria in rhizosphere, root, phyllosphere and leaf of soil\u2013rice ecosystem

The effects of rare earth mining on rice biomass, rare earth element (REE) content and bacterial community structure was studied through pot experiment. The research shows that the REE content in rice roots, shoots and grains was significantly positive correlated with that in soil, and the dry weight of rice roots, shoots and grains was highly correlated with soil physical and chemical properties, nutrient elements and REE contents; The exploitation of rare earth minerals inhibited a-diversity of endophytic bacteria in rhizosphere, root, phyllosphere and leaf of rice, significantly reduced the abundance index, OTU number, Chao, Ace index and also significantly reduced the diversity index–Shannon index, and also reduced uniformity index: Pielou’s evenness index, which caused β-diversity of bacteria to be quite different. The exploitation of rare earth minerals reduces the diversity of bacteria, but forms dominant bacteria, such as Burkholderia, Bacillus, Buttiauxella, Acinetobacter, Bradyrhizobium, Candida koribacter, which can degrade the pollutants formed by exploitation of rare earth minerals, alleviate the compound pollution of rare earth and ammonia nitrogen, and also has the function of fixing nitrogen and resisting rare earth stress; The content of soil available phosphorus in no-mining area is lower, and the dominant bacteria of Pantoea formed in such soil, which has the function of improving soil phosphorus availability. Rare earth elements and physical and chemical properties of soil affect the community structure of bacteria in rhizosphere and phyllosphere of rice, promote the parallel movement of some bacteria in rhizosphere, root, phyllosphere and leaf of rice, promote the construction of community structure of bacteria in rhizosphere and phyllosphere of rice, give full play to the growth promoting function of Endophytes, and promote the growth of rice. The results showed that the exploitation of rare earth minerals has formed the dominant endophytic bacteria of rice and ensured the yield of rice in the mining area, however, the mining of mineral resources causes the compound pollution of rare earth and ammonia nitrogen, which makes REE content of rice in mining area significantly higher than that in non-mining area, and the excessive rare earth element may enter the human body through the food chain and affect human health, so the food security in the REE mining area deserves more attention.

Exogenous application and interaction of biochar with environmental factors for improving functional diversity of rhizosphere's microbial community and health

The usage of fertilizer with high nitrogen content in many countries, as well as its enormous surplus, has a negative impact on the soil ecological environment in agricultural system. This consumption of nitrogen fertilizer can be minimized by applying biochar to maintain the sufficient supply of nitrogen as nutrient to the near-root zone. This study investigated the effects of various amounts of biochar application (450, 900, 1350, and 1800 kg/hm2) and reduction of nitrogen fertilizer amount (10, 15, 20, and 25%) on the nutrients and microorganism community structure in rhizosphere growing tobacco plant. The microorganism community was found essential in improving nitrogen retention. Compared with conventional treatment, an application of biochar in rhizosphere soil increased the content of soil available phosphorus, organic matter and total nitrogen by 21.47%, 26.34%, and 9.52%, respectively. It also increased the abundance of microorganisms that are capable of degrading and utilizing organic matter and cellulose, such as Actinobacteria and Acidobacteria. The relative abundance of Chloroflexi was also increased by 49.67–78.61%, and the Acidobacteria increased by 14.79–39.13%. Overall, the application of biochar with reduced nitrogen fertilizer amount can regulate the rhizosphere microecological environment of tobacco plants and their microbial population structure, thereby promoting soil health for tobacco plant growth while reducing soil acidification and environmental pollution caused by excessive nitrogen fertilizer.

Impact of Subsurface Application of Compound Mineral Fertilizer on Soil Enzymatic Activity under Reduced Tillage

Soil biochemical properties shaping soil fertility and agro-ecosystem productivity depend on the reduced tillage system and the dose and method of application of fertilizer; therefore, the research hypothesis put forward proposes that under reduced tillage system conditions, the subsurface application of a multi-component mineral fertilizer would increase soil enzymatic activity, thus favourably influencing the biodiversity of the soil environment. The objective of the three-year study was to evaluate the impact of subsurface application of varying mineral fertilizer rates on soil enzymatic activity under reduced tillage system conditions in soybean, winter wheat and maize rotations. The field experiment was set up as a split-plot design in four replicates. The first experimental factor included two methods of mineral fertilization application: fertilizer broadcast over the soil surface (S); fertilizer applied deep (subsurface placed) using a specially designed cultivator (Sub-S). The other factor was the rates of the mineral fertilizer (NPKS): 85 kg∙ha−1 (F85) and 170 kg∙ha−1 (F170). The method of application and rate of mineral fertilizer did not have a significant effect on the organic carbon and total nitrogen content in the soil of the plots with all rotational crops. Subsurface application of fertilizer significantly increased available phosphorus content in soil under soybean and winter wheat crops; however, it significantly decreased soil pHKCl values within sites with all crops in the rotation compared to surface application. At the same time, deep application of mineral fertilizer significantly stimulated dehydrogenase activity in the soil under the winter wheat crops and acid phosphatase activity in the soil under all rotation crops. The higher level of mineral fertilization contributed to reduction of soil pHKCl under winter wheat and maize, and promoted an increase in the soil P content. Additionally, significant increases of dehydrogenases and urease activity in the soil under winter wheat and maize crops, alkaline phosphatase activity in the soil under all the studied crops, and acid phosphatase activity in the soil under the soybean crops were found, compared to mineral fertilizer in the amount of 85 kg NPKS∙ha−1. The results of the present study have demonstrated a positive effect of subsurface application of compound mineral fertilizer on the soil biochemical parameters in reduced tillage. This may be a recommendation for the subsurface use of multicomponent mineral fertilizers in sustainable agriculture. However, a full objective characterization of the soil environment processes induced by in-depth application of mineral fertilizer in reduced tillage requires long-term monitoring.

Responses of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Diversity and Community to 41-Year Rotation Fertilization in Brown Soil Region of Northeast China.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) play vital roles in the growth and development of plants, ecosystem sustainability, and stability in agroecosystem, such as transporting nutrients to host plants, improving soil physical structure, and enhancing the stress resistance of host plants. However, the effects of fertilization on AMF diversity and community in brown soil areas are still unclear. The purpose of this study is to explore changes in AMF diversity and community structures and finding out the factors that influenced the changes after 41 years of fertilization in brown soil. Samples were collected from five treatments of the long-term fertilization experiment in June 2019, including CK (no fertilizer), N (mineral nitrogen fertilizer), NP (mineral nitrogen and phosphate fertilizer), M (pig manure), and MNP (pig manure, mineral nitrogen, and phosphate fertilizer). Illumina HiSeq sequencing was used to determine AMF diversity and community structure. The relationship between AMF communities in soil and roots and environmental factors was analyzed by redundancy analysis. The results showed that the soil nutrient content of manure treatments was generally higher than that of chemical fertilizer treatments and no fertilizer treatment. Long-term fertilization increased AMF spore density, which increased with the increase of soil fertility. The moderate content of soil available phosphorus was beneficial to the colonization of AMF. AMF diversity in soil decreased with soil fertility, but AMF diversity in roots was influenced only by soil nitrate–nitrogen and pH. Glomus was the dominant genus in both soil and root samples. AMF community structure in soil and roots had a different response to long-term fertilization. Application of manure had a greater impact on AMF community structure in soil, whereas application of exogenous phosphate fertilizer had a greater impact on that in roots. Soil ammonium nitrogen, nitrate–nitrogen, total nitrogen, organic carbon, total potassium, and available potassium were the most important factors that influenced taxa of AMF in soil, whereas soil ammonium nitrogen, nitrate–nitrogen, total nitrogen, organic carbon, total potassium, available potassium, available phosphorus, and plant phosphorus and potassium content were the most important factors influencing taxa of AMF in maize roots under long-term fertilization in brown soil.

Spatiotemporal Heterogeneity of Mangrove Root Sphere under a Tropical Monsoon Climate in Eastern Thailand

Mangrove ecosystems under tropical monsoon climates experience changes in environmental factors, especially seasonal variations in salinity. These changes might have direct influences on the mangrove root sphere, which plays an important role in carbon dynamics and supports mangrove growth. We aimed to elucidate how the soil properties including salinity and nutrient budget affect the mangrove roots in the wet and dry seasons across the mangrove zonation (Avicennia, Rhizophora, and Xylocarpus zones). This area is in a secondary forest at the Trat River estuary, eastern Thailand. Root mass was observed at 0–10 and 10–20 cm depths across all zones and the living roots were separated into diameter classes. The soil water salinity was measured at a 10 cm depth. We analyzed the nitrogen, phosphorus, and carbon contents in the roots and soil. Spatiotemporal changes occurred due to the vegetation zonation and the variations in salinity and the content of soil available phosphorus that caused different root sphere conditions along the distance from the river. The highest root biomass was found in the riverward Avicennia zone, which was 4.8 times higher than that of the inland Xylocarpus zone in the wet season. The root necromass distribution along the zonation showed an opposite trend to that of biomass. Among seasons, the root size-class proportion differed, with high fine roots observed during the wet season. We confirmed that the root sphere showed both spatial and temporal heterogeneity. Mangrove roots, especially fine roots, interacted with changing salinity, inundation regime, and biological processes evoked by microtopographic gradients as a consequence of mangrove zonation and seasonal rainfall. Our findings indicate how the root sphere differed by specific vegetation structure in this mangrove forest. Therefore, these might provide an ecological perspective for the mangrove rehabilitation plans to facilitate below-ground carbon stock.
