THE PULSE OF THE CITY: 'GOUARIR' STREET AND THE EVOLUTION OF PUBLIC SPACES IN ALGERIA

The transformation of a neighborhood street into a city-wide street reflects the adaptation of urban forms to new usages, evolving as a space of urbanity where animation and social activity develop. Often located on the public domain, the street differs from the layout of plots, which is constantly changing, its underground infrastructure transforming as networks evolve. In this regard, the concept of the street needs to be assessed in light of the transformations induced by the new urban trends in Algeria. The study of the various urban and architectural transformations of “rue Gouarir” in Bordj Bou Arreridj and its evolution enables us to examine both urban recompositions as an expression of changing patterns of life, and the significance of place in contemporary Algerian cities. This study, conducted from an interdisciplinary perspective involving architecture, urban planning and economics. The aim is to assess the urban transformations and dynamics affecting this street and the people who live on it and build it. In order to better understand the dynamics of street transformation into public space, an analytical method mainly founded on socio-spatial investigation was employed. As a result, “Rue Gouarir” is overseen by community residents and business proprietors, with a conspicuous lack of involvement from local authorities. The interactions within “Rue Gouarir” have substantially transformed the surrounding area, propelling it to become a sought-after and attractive district within the city.

The Image of Women in the Contemporary Algerian Novel (The Throne of Lovers) by (Rabia Djelti) as a model

This research paper aims to reveal the position of women in the contemporary Algerian novel, as the basic building block of society accompanied by men. To depict the life of the heroine (Nujoud-Zleikha), her psychological suffering, she lost her parents, to find herself in the arms of her aunt, who was suffering from barrenness. In addition to her ugly features and repulsive form, and the novelist mentioned many feminist personalities, such as (the heroine's aunt, Nujood (the heroine's sister), Mahdia, the fighter Noura, Halima, the midwife, Soso..) , and other personalities that reflected certain social conditions. This novel exposed reality, which reflects the consolidation of the male mentality and considers that the birth of a female is a cause for bad luck, , with social, political, cultural and artistic dimensions, trying to prove the status and role of women in life.

Multilingual Code Switching in Algerian Rap Song Lyrics: A Functional Approach

The use of multilingual lyrics in contemporary rap songs is a recurrent phenomenon in Algeria. If the lyrics are articulated through Algerian Arabic as a “base language,” the rappers saturate them with other languages for the sake of producing linguistically mixed songs. The most frequently used languages for code-switching are Standard Arabic, Berber (Tamazight), French, English and Spanish. These multilingual songs are most often embedded with code-switching (CS) where each used language assumes a particular discourse and pragmatic function. Therefore, this investigation aims to explore the recent phenomenon of multilingual CS in Algerian rap songs, basically to identify the functions that CS fulfils in song lyrics. Indeed, the analysis is mainly qualitative. A corpus of 10 songs from five Algerian rappers was collected and analysed. The researchers applied Gumperz's (1982) and Appel and Muysken’s (2005) functions of CS. This research answers the following question: What are the functions of CS in the lyrics of contemporary Algerian rap songs? The corpus included lyrics from rap songs produced in the period extending from 2019 to 2021. The findings reveal that the concerned multilingual CS is underpinned by a strategic positioning issued by rappers based on the social representations that specify each language in the Algerian sociolinguistic space concerning particular functions and socio-cultural considerations. A distinct set of functions was identified: 1) code-switching for language convenience, 2) identifying or drawing the attention of addressees, 3) serving as a marker of social/cultural identity, 4) complying with social norms, and 5) facilitating rhyme. This study can act as an asset for anyone who wants to extend the framework to examine multilingual CS in other Algerian communication contexts. Furthermore, it highlights the fundamental role of CS in rap song lyrics to increase the potential of promoting freedom of expression, multilingualism, and modernity. Ahlam Mostaghanemi is a contemporary Algerian poet and novelist, she is also arguably the most successful Arabic writer of her time, she was born in exile during a time of great turmoil in Algeria. Her experiences as the daughter of a French teacher, turned Algerian liberation fighter shaped her vision and provided inspiration for her writing, as one of the first students in the new Arabic schools in independent Algeria, she puts tremendous value in being able to write and express herself freely in Arabic. Ahlam Mostaghanemi was the first Algerian woman writer to publish a novel in the Arabic language. Her work is therefore very significant in the context of Arab women's writing and feminism. Her novels express a unique understanding of social and political events and convey the impact of these events on individuals by combining love stories with political and social history, fused together in present time. The language that is used in the novel is usually simple in that it is a discourse in which it addresses different segments of society, as it expresses the language of various social segments, but the modern Arab narrator has advanced in his language in his novelist narration to transfer the novel into a poetic novel. The study includes the novelistic output of the Algerian novelist Ahlam Mostaghanemi in her trilogy, Memory of the Body, Chaos of the Senses, and Lions that befits you, in the narrative language at its poetic level, Mostaghanemi’s poetic language is an important feature throughout her novels, and that the narrative text revolts against all rules and laws and goes beyond ready-made templates

The importance of dealing with the aesthetics of deviation is that this phenomenon constitutes a different language style construction, which contributes to linguistic richness. Although this aesthetic is not measured by the degree of angle deviation from the origin and its release or severity, but is measured by what is more complicated, however this migration that practiced by the discourse towards the fog cities is the adventure that captivates the mind of the researcher, which seeking to the secrets and consequences of migration. Especially that the mind is eager to deepen into unusual perceptions. The study focused on two aspects of displacement: 1. Forwarding and delaying / 2. Deletion The operational area in this study is the Algerian contemporary poem, because the researcher desires to clarify the balance of language structure and its integration at the Algerian poet, which often exceeded his chance of using a language style. The study based on the stylistic approach because it is the comprehensive approach to analysis, where it looks at how to compose the linguistic features that selected by the author and illuminates the deviations of the recipient.

Over the last two decades, anglophone scholars trained as students of France have paid rather heated attention to Algeria, embracing various frames to analyse Algerians and Algeria in relation to France and the French, whether as a colony, as an extension of the metropole, in the context of Francophonie, or by placing ‘metropole and colony in a single analytic field’ (see Ann Laura Stoler and Frederick Cooper, ‘Between Metropole and Colony: Rethinking a Research Agenda’, in Tensions of Empire: Colonial Cultures in a Bourgeois World, ed. by Stoler and Cooper (Berkeley: University of California Press, 1997), pp. 1–56 (p. 4)). This, ironically, has led to vibrant scholarly discussions in which ‘Algeria’ is at stake but in which scholars trained as specialists of Algeria itself are in the minority (or wholly absent), and this makes the collection of essays that Patrick Crowley has edited and introduced particularly welcome. It is the only recent edited collection that I know of to focus on Algeria, but what really sets it apart is how Crowley has brought together scholars wholly attentive to what their evidence reveals about Algeria in recent decades with others who also take seriously how ‘cultural artefacts — such as the novel, film, music, dance, and the visual arts — can both represent what was or is and help fabricate new ways of thinking, whether among scholars or their publics’ (p. 3). Two additional frames help such diverse approaches hang together: the particular attention each article gives to transnational dynamics and developments, and the welcome focus on developments since 1988, when Algeria’s Arab Spring avant la lettre led to the end of single-party rule by the Front de libération nationale, the party that had led the country to independence from France in 1962. Crowley’s Introduction effectively maps out why each of these frames is so useful to scholarship on contemporary Algeria. Another great strength of the collection is to give readers access to exciting work by promising young scholars — Fanny Gillet’s ‘The Archive and Contemporary Art in Algeria (1992–2012)’ and Samuel Sami Everett’s ‘The Many (Im)possibilities of Contemporary Algerian Judaïtés’ stand out, as each attends closely to Algerian materials to make novel interventions in discussions that stretch beyond Algeria (and France) — as well as to the most important historians in France and the UK currently working on Algeria; the articles by Malika Rahal, James McDougall, and Walid Benkhaled and Natalya Vince are important in their own right but also introduce readers to approaches and questions each has pioneered in other recently published work. Benkhaled and Vince’s ‘Performing Algerianness: The National and Transnational Construction of Algeria’s “Culture Wars”’ is a must-read for graduate students and other scholars entering into research that touches on Algeria’s recent history. They draw heavily on analytic schemas that Rahal and McDougall have introduced, to make a compelling case that, despite the often intense political, linguistic, religious, or other debates that divide them — or perhaps because of them — contemporary Algerians share ‘a social cohesiveness that, when taken at face value, the actual content of the debates denies’ (p. 265). They argue for a ‘post-dramatic analysis of Algeria’ (p. 266), a convincing argument that — in the way they anchor it in empirical evidence, Foucauldian discourse analysis, and theatre studies — nicely summarizes the utility of this interdisciplinary collection.

This study tried to dive in the archives relating to Oman in the Algerian contemporary press, (1986-2016), and its goal is to look for the Oman presence in the Algerian press, and its role in consolidating of Algeria's Oman relations in the past and present. Based on the above, we have attempted in this study to analyze the subject - after a systematic approach- in the following topics: 1. Introduction to the interesting of Algerian journalists about Oman in modern-day. 2. Algerian press and the contemporary cultural scene in Oman. 3. Algerian press and document the views of the Algerian and Omani on topical issues. Among the findings of the research is the extrapolation of the huge amount of Algerian press material covered by the period of study. That the reasons of Omani-Algerian relationship extend in the depths of history, back to the second century AH, and she has stimulated the efforts of the press pioneers in Algeria and Zanzibar this relation and contributed to its consolidation in this modern age. The study also concluded that the image of the Sultanate of Oman in this press embodies a mosaic of high cultural characteristics. The first is: Oman's adherence to its religious and Arab identity. The second is: his struggle for his freedom and his struggle against colonialism throughout history. The third is: the wrapping of the Omani people around their political leadership and their pride in their scientists. The fourth: the sense of citizenship and co-existence and the entrenchment of the right to difference. The fifth: focus in the renaissance on the humans before the structures, and finally, the image of the Sultanate of Oman in short is: "Is the originality of history, the renaissance of the future, and a worthy example to study and follow-up".

This article aims to stand up to some aspects of the conflict in the contemporary Algerian novel through the novel S by Zeriab Boukeffa. The novel was published in the period after the 1990s, but it portrays this bloody era, which witnessed a violent conflict on several levels. The novel S is not limited to describing the conflict and its victims in the style of the 1990s, but is characterized by the analysis of the parties to the conflict and condemnation of the authority represented by its security agencies. The research provides a substantive reading of the conflict images in the novel.

From Tahar Djaout's "No" to Mustapha Benfodil's "Enough!": Two Moments of Revolutionary Aesthetics in Contemporary Algerian Literature and Cultural Activism

Vingt-cinq ans avant la mort de Tahar Djaout, le poete, journaliste, dramaturge, et activiste Algerien Mustapha Benfodil naissait dans l'ouest de l'Algerie. C'etait 1968, une annee de bouleversements culturels, economiques, sociaux et politiques a travers le monde. Cet esprit continue a guider et informer l'œuvre de Benfodil de nos jours. L'annee de l'assassinat de Djaout, Benfodil lui a rendu hommage dans un poeme intitule « la sante de la Republique ». Ce poeme relie ces deux auteurs et figures intellectuelles publiques textuellement d'une maniere immediate et evidente. Les paralleles entre les ecrivains, specialement en ce qui concerne la revolution et les relations que l'artiste partage avec la societe, l'etat, et la religion, sont profonds. Cet article examine les messages, les tons et les approches revolutionnaires de Djaout et Benfodil a travers l'etude de la poesie revolutionnaire du premier et d'une installation artistique, intitulee Maportaliche/Ecritures sauvages , du deuxieme. Dans cette tradition esthetique revolutionnaire, l'importance du travail de l'artiste/l'intellectuel/l'activiste prend une signification intensifiee, alors que cette figure se trouve alternativement adulee ou censuree. Abstract: Twenty-five years before Tahar Djaout's death, the Algerian poet, journalist, dramaturge, and activist Mustapha Benfodil was born in western Algeria. The year was 1968, a year of great turmoil and upheaval on cultural, economic, social, and political levels the world round. Benfodil began life in a revolutionary moment, and such a spirit continues to guide and inform his work today. The same year that Djaout was assassinated, Benfodil paid tribute to him in a poem entitled, A la sante de la Republique. This poem connects the two authors and public intellectuals textually in an immediate and evident way. And yet the parallels between the writers, especially concerning the theme of revolution and the artist's relationships with society, the state, and religion, run deep. This article examines the revolutionary content, tone, and approach of both Djaout and Benfodil through the study of revolutionary poetry by the former and an artistic installation, entitled Maportaliche/Ecritures sauvages , by the latter. In this revolutionary aesthetic tradition, the stakes of the artist/intellectual/activist's work take on heightened significance, just as this figure finds itself alternatively lionized or censored.

Contemporary Algerian francophone fiction, trauma, and the ‘war of memories’

This article studies representations of the colonial past in three contemporary Algerian novels, and shows that these representations are informed by a common sense of absence, that of community in the colony, and touch upon most often on traumatic memories and images of violence. When considered in the context of the debate in France over the imperial past, called by some historians ‘the war of memories’, the different trauma discourses in these novels reveal that the three authors orchestrate an open dialogue over the allegedly positive legacy of colonization, and contest, each in her or his own way, the French attempt to come to terms with the imperial past by acknowledging colonization as a work of civilization. At the same time, they also work through their own sense of trauma, by reporting different forms of colonial violence and commemorating native resistance to colonial domination.

Musical Jews: Listening for Hierarchy in Colonial Algeria and Beyond

The scholarly literature on Muslim-Jewish relations in the Maghrib has long been divided between what Shlomo Deshen (1989:123) has called the integrationist model and the conflict model.1 The first evokes an image of Jewish integration within the Maghribi social fabric, with crosscutting person-to-person ties overcoming ethnoreligious insularity. The second evokes an image of Jewish marginality and insecurity, with ethnoreligious categories and their institutional instantiations profoundly shaping the fate of Maghribi Jewish communities living under Muslim-majority rule.2 Although more recent generations of scholars have been wary of making such sweeping judgments, the traces of such ambivalence (Bilu and Levy 1996) remain, with many contemporary researchers leaning toward a deep version of the integrationist model while positing a colonial production or intensification of Jewish marginality.3Such a state of play between two contrasting interpretations is by no means limited to scholars of Muslim-Jewish relations in the Maghrib. In Jewish Studies more generally, what Salo Baron (1928:526) critiqued as the lachrymose theory of Jewish history came to be countered by research that has highlighted examples of successful Jewish integration into a wide range of societies, eventually followed by a neo-lachrymose response that has highlighted Jewish marginality in Muslim societies in both the medieval and modern periods (Cohen 1994:9, Beinin 1998:14-19, Stein 2002:328). The Mediterranean itself has sometimes been presented as a prototypical space of contradictions, including tense cohabitation between peoples (Bromberger and Duran 2001:746 as cited in Miliani 2011:179). And in anthropology more widely, there is a lasting rivalry between interpretations of inter-ethnic relations that emphasize horizontality and symbiosis and those that emphasize verticality, with a strong temporalizing tendency in recent work that identifies the modern state as central to a shift from the horizontal to the vertical.4 Thus the longstanding debate about Muslim-Jewish relations in the Maghrib is a localized version of a broader theme.This article revisits the debate regarding Muslims and Jews in the Maghrib through a musical case study. For many contemporary Jews and Muslims living in the Maghrib and its diaspora, Jewish specialization in the musical arts in the modern period is evidence of Jewish belonging within the North African social fabric. Particularly in Algeria, where Jews tended to be conflated with the French settler population in colonial law and in post-independence nationalist and metropolitan memory (Shepard 2006, Katz 2015, Mandel 2014), Jewish musical prominence can be taken as a sign of Jews' at-home-ness in Algerian society in the not very distant past, and as the recognition of this fact by many contemporary Algerian Muslims (Bougherara 2002, Swedenburg 2005, Miliani 2011). In this way, the sound of Algerian Jews performing the Arabic-language classics conjures a picture of belonging and co-participation that counters the longstanding notion that Jews were not truly indigenous to Algerian society.Yet, there are ways in which Jewish musicality can be read along the grain of the idea of separation rather than against it. As is the case in many societies, professional musicianship has long been looked upon as a dubious occupation in Algeria, the wider Maghrib, and the Middle East and North Africa region at large (Pananti 1818:266-267, Broughton 1839:22, Nieuwkerk 1995, Racy 2003, Ciucci 2005). This is in keeping with the classic paradox pointed out by Allan Merriam (1964:133-143), who showed that for many societies, music-making is of great importance to the general population but constitutes a low-prestige occupation. Subsequent ethnomusicologists have extended Merriam's observations in several ways, including into the realm of ethnicity. Some scholars have pointed out that this low-prestige occupation is often taken up by members of outsider groups, either through a labor market mechanism (Nettle 1983:426-427) or through a projection of the sense of the collective's musical self onto its margins (van de Port 1999, Kapchan 1994). …

The concept of the novel image is one of the modern concepts that constitute on an important theoretical accumulation. The study of the image is much more applied to poetic texts critics before returning to its vast potential applications in prose as part of rhetoric of narration, the axis of the work of circles researchers of Titwan in Morocco. This article aims to approach the narrative image in contemporary Algerian novel in the work of the young novelist KEBICHE Fares, a novel that deals with nuclear experiments of colonial France in the Algerian Sahara.
