Disability and costs of IHD attributable to the consumption of trans-fatty acids in Brazil.

To estimate the disability and costs of the Brazilian Unified Health System for IHD attributable to trans-fatty acid (TFA) consumption in 2019. This ecological study used secondary data from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019 to estimate the years lived with disability from IHD attributable to TFA in Brazil in 2019. Data on direct costs (purchasing power parity: 1 Int$ = R$ 2·280) were obtained from the Hospital and Ambulatory Information Systems of the Brazilian Unified Health System. Moreover, the total costs in each state were divided by the resident population in 2019 and multiplied by 10 000 inhabitants. The relationship between the socio-demographic index, disease and economic burden was investigated. Brazil and its twenty-seven states. Adults aged ≥ 25 years of both sexes. IHD attributable to TFA consumption resulted in 11 165 years lived with disability (95 % uncertainty interval 932–18 462) in 2019 in Brazil. A total of Int$ 54 546 227 (95 % uncertainty interval 4 505 792–85 561 810) was spent in the Brazilian Unified Health System in 2019 due to IHD attributable to TFA, with the highest costs of hospitalisations, for males and individuals aged ≥ 50 years or over. The highest costs were observed in Sergipe (Int$ 6508/10 000; 95 % uncertainty interval 576–10 265), followed by the two states from the South. Overall, as the socio-demographic index increases, expenditures increase. TFA consumption results in a high disease and economic IHD burden in Brazil, reinforcing the need for more effective health policies, such as industrial TFA elimination, following the international agenda.

Chronic trans fatty acid consumption shortens lifespan in male Drosophila melanogaster on a high-sugar and high-fat diet.

Aging entails the progressive decline in the body's self-regulation and functionality over time. Notably, obesity and aging exhibit parallel phenotypes, with obesity further accelerating the aging process across multiple dimensions and diminishing lifespan. In this study, we explored the impact of trans fatty acid (TFA) consumption on the overall health and lifespan of male Drosophila melanogaster under an isocaloric high-sugar and high-fat diet. Our results indicate that TFA intake results in a shortened lifespan, elevated body weight, and increased triglyceride levels in flies fed a high-sugar and high-fat diet with equivalent caloric intake. Additionally, TFA exposure induces oxidative stress, locomotor deficits, and damage to the intestinal barrier in flies. Collectively, chronic TFA consumption expedites the aging process and reduces the lifespan of male Drosophila melanogaster. These results contribute supplementary evidence regarding the adverse health effects associated with TFAs.

Abstract P484: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Cardiometabolic Effects of Trans Fatty Acids From Dairy Foods

As global initiatives to eliminate industrially-produced trans fatty acids (TFA) are implemented, dairy/ruminant-derived foods will become the major dietary TFA source. Such changes warrant better understanding of health effects from ruminant food-TFA consumption. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess cardiometabolic impacts of TFA from dairy foods, by evaluating findings from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and prospective cohort studies (PCs). Separate searches for RCTs and PCs were conducted in PubMed and EMBASE databases using PRISMA guidelines. RCTs with at least a three-week intervention among adults compared the impact on blood lipids of regular dairy foods with TFA-enhanced dairy fat/foods produced by altering the cow’s diet. Selected PCs with at least four years of observation analyzed relationships between blood levels of specific TFA, such as vaccenic acid or trans palmitoleic acid (TPA) and risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) or type 2 diabetes among adults. A pooled meta-analysis of RCTs using the random effects model was performed for TC, LDL-C, HDL-C, TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, TG, ApoA1, ApoB as continuous variables with a statistical significance of p < 0.05, 95% confidence interval (CI). For PCs, risk estimates and 95% CI using maximally adjusted models for contrasting exposures of circulating TFA levels were tabulated. Among 13 experimental groups from ten RCTs, there were no statistically significant differences in mean difference (MD) and 95% CI for any lipid biomarkers except a slight decrease in HDL-C (MD: -0.05mmol/L; CI: -0.10, 0.00 mmol/L) for TFA-enriched vs regular dairy foods. Among PCs, four found no association of circulating TPA with risk of CVD mortality or incidence and one found no association of circulating vaccenic acid with risk of CVD mortality. Additionally, three of five PCs found no significant association while two found a significant inverse association of TPA and type 2 diabetes. Our findings indicate that consumption of TFA (0.8 - 12.2 g/d) from different types of dairy foods does not confer adverse effects on cardiometabolic health.

Abstract. Milk fat is the third main source of lipids for human nutrition. Fatty acids in milk fat have a heterogeneous composition due to differences in chain length, degree of saturation, etc. It has been scientifically proven that long-term consumption of trans-fatty acids causes various diseases of the human body; according to WHO recommendations, their maximum consumption should not exceed 1 % of total energy. A comprehensive study of the composition of fatty acids in cattle milk gives scientists the opportunity to use this trait in breeding work by selecting genotypes with a low content of trans-isomers and saturated fatty acids harmful to human health. The scientific novelty lies in the study of molecular genetic mechanisms for regulating the quantitative content of fatty acids and their trans-isomers in the fat fraction of cow's milk. The purpose of the work is to identify allelic variants of SNPs associated with the fatty acid composition of cow's milk and the content of trans isomers of unsaturated fatty acids in it. Research methods. The studies were carried out on cows of the Holstein black-and-white breed. The genetic profile of animals of the Holstein black-and-white breed was studied, SNPs significantly associated with the quantitative and qualitative content of fatty acids and their trans-isomers in the fat fraction of cow's milk were identified. The fatty acid composition of cows' milk was determined using a multiparameter automatic analyzer MilkoScan 7/Fossomatic 7 FT+ / DC (FOSS, Denmark). Results. Whole-genome genotyping was performed. Analyzing the content of fatty acids with different saturation of hydrogen bonds, a significant difference between the amount of fatty acids and genotypes, reliable values were established only for 5 SNPs. It was found that for four SNPs, the highest values of the content of fatty acids and trans-isomers were in homozygous genotypes ARS-BFGL-NGS-41348GG; BTA-115852-no-rsAA; BTB-00771463GG; Hapmap46159-BTA-70956TT. A significant difference in the content of trans-fatty acid isomers in milk between genotypes was found only for SNP ARS-BFGL-NGS-5502. The largest mass fraction of trans-isomers of unsaturated fatty acids was found in the milk fat of cows with the heterozygous genotype AG, which amounted to 0.076 g/100 g and was 0.011 g/100 g and 0.032 g/100 g (P≤0.01) more compared to heterozygous genotypes GG and AA, respectively.

Fatty acid profile emphasizing trans-fatty acids in commercially available soybean and palm oils and its probable intake in Bangladesh

The study aimed to determine the trans-fat content in branded and unbranded soybean oil (SBO) and palm oil (PO) in nationally representative samples of Bangladesh. To our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive study reporting the Trans fatty acid (TFA) content in commonly consumed SBO and PO in Bangladesh. 106 composites (SBO 67, PO 39) were analyzed by GC–MS using Association of Official Analytical Chemists (AOAC) Methodology 996.06. According to the study, TFA (>2 %) was detected in 66.7 % of branded and 24.5 % of unbranded SBO samples, but in none of the palm oil samples. The average TFA contents in branded and unbranded SBO were 2.79 % (ranging from 0.42 % to 4.84 %) and 1.70 % (ranging from 0 %-4.25 %) respectively. Total TFA ranged from 0 %-1.61 % with a mean of 0.9 % and 0.61 % for branded and unbranded PO samples, respectively. From a daily intake of 27 g oil, Bangladeshi population has a probable TFA consumption of 0.75 g/day and 0.46 g/day from branded SBO and PO, respectively. This study generated evidence about the presence of an elevated level of TFA in edible oil, which should be strictly monitored.

Hygienic assessment of the consumption of trans fatty acids by the population of the Omsk region

Aim. Assessment of the content of trans-fatty acids in foods consumed by the population of the Omsk region and the values of their actual consumption.Materials and Methods. The results of laboratory studies of food products from the following groups were analyzed: fast food (hamburgers, french fries, chips); confectionery; oils, fats; meat products; dairy products (n=438). In product samples, the mass fraction of trans-fatty acid isomers was determined by gas chromatography. An assessment was made of the actual nutrition and consumption of trans fats by the inhabitants of the region using the method of analyzing the frequency of food consumption (n=441).Results. The median content of trans fats in the main food groups was 0.67% of total fat, which does not exceed the values recommended by WHO. There was a decrease in the content of trans-isomers in food products from 2.7% in the period 2016−2017. up to 1.0% in the period 2020−2021 However, there remains a significant health risk associated with the consumption of trans-fatty acids, due to the high proportion of samples exceeding the recommended levels (24.5±2.1%), to a greater extent the risk was determined by the consumption of confectionery. The median consumption of TFAs in the study population was 1.16 g, which is in line with the recommended norms. The proportion of people with excess recommended consumption was 10.2%.Conclusion. The results indicate an improvement in the situation related to the consumption of trans fats in 2016-2021 due to stricter requirements for their content in food products. It is necessary to conduct further research related to the assessment of the content of trans-isomers of fatty acids in the diet of various population groups to identify risk groups and priority food products - sources of trans fats.

Positive associations between different circulating trans fatty acids (TFAs) and urinary albumin excretion among adults in the U.S.: a population-based study

BackgroundIt is well established that the consumption of trans-fatty acids (TFAs) can increase the incidence of total mortality, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes. However, there are still no demographic studies on the effects of circulating TFA isoforms on the albumin-creatinine ratio (ACR), an early marker of chronic kidney disease. Our goal was to explore the possible relationships between TFAs and ACR.MethodsIn this study, complete TFAs and urinary ACR data were collected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) (2009–2010 and 1999–2000 cycles). The independent linear relationships between different circulating TFA isoforms and the ACR were examined by performing multivariable linear regression models. Machine learning was used to analyze the contribution of the different TFA isoforms to the ACR. To assess the nonlinearity of the relationship, smooth curve fitting and an analysis of threshold effect were performed, and a stratified analysis was conducted to identify possible susceptible populations.ResultsOur analysis included a total of 3785 individuals. Elaidic acid, linolelaidic acid, and sum TFAs were shown to be positively associated with the ACR after full adjustment by weighted multivariable regression analysis. In the subgroup analysis, the positive associations were maintained in participants with hypertension and without diabetes. In the XGBoost model of the ACR, Sum TFAs were found to be the most crucial factor. In addition, smooth curve fitting showed that there was a nonlinear relationship between the different TFAs and the ACR, and there was a saturation point.ConclusionsOur study demonstrated that TFA isoforms were positively and independently correlated with urinary albumin excretion, especially in participants with hypertension and without diabetes. This suggested that reducing trans fatty acid intake may reduce the risk of renal events.

High-power ultrasound bleaching technique for canola oil (Brassica napus L.): Pigments removal and quality parameters

Canola seeds (Brassica napus L.) are among the most commonly used seeds in Mexico for vegetable oil production. This is based on the high yield and content of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids. During oil bleaching, it is important to maintain fatty acids in their cis configuration because of the health concerns associated with trans-fatty acid consumption. In this sense, the industrial processing parameters employed for this purpose present some limitations, such as high temperatures and long times, which may change the cis configuration to trans. In addition, the amount of bleaching clay employed for this process could be a source of contamination because it is disposed of after treatment. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a bleaching process for canola oil using high-power ultrasound (US). US processing was applied to nine treatments with different processing times (60, 75, and 90 min), clay percentages (1, 2, and 3%), and temperatures (60 and 80 °C) to determine the concentrations of chlorophyll a and b (µg chlo/100 g oil), carotenes (µg β-carotene/100 g oil), color (L*, a*, b*, C*, and h°), iodine value (g I2/100 g oil), and finally carrying out a spectroscopic analysis (ATR-FTIR and Raman). A conventional bleaching treatment (100 °C for 180 min, 3% bleaching clay) was used as a control. The results revealed that US treatments with 2% clay at 60 °C for 60 and 90 min eliminated most of the chlorophyll compounds (98%). However, in terms of carotenes reduction, these identical treatments exhibited a similar tendency to that of the control (approximately 30% decrease). These findings also affected the sample color, in which US treatments revealed chromatic coordinates that indicated yellow tones with chroma values that were more intense than those in the control samples. In terms of the iodine value, such treatments fulfilled the international standards for vegetable oils (90–100 g I2/100 g oil). Finally, the spectroscopic study revealed no trans configurations or the presence of different chemical compounds after US treatment, because neither of them presented typical peaks for those molecular configurations. In this regard, US can be a useful methodology for bleaching vegetable oils, helping to reduce time, and bleaching clay with similar pigment reduction results.

Dietary fat and fatty acid consumptions and the odds of asthenozoospermia: a case-control study in China.

Are dietary fat and fatty acid (FA) intakes related to the odds of asthenozoospermia? Plant-based fat consumption was associated with decreased asthenozoospermia odds, while the consumption of animal-based monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) was positively related to asthenozoospermia odds. Dietary fat and FA are significant ingredients of a daily diet, which have been demonstrated to be correlated to the reproductive health of men. However, to date, evidence on fat and FA associations with the odds of asthenozoospermia is unclear. The hospital-based case-control study was performed in an infertility clinic from June 2020 to December 2020. Briefly, 549 asthenozoospermia cases and 581 controls with normozoospermia were available for final analyses. We collected dietary data through a verified food frequency questionnaire of 110 food items. Asthenozoospermia cases were ascertained according to the World Health Organization guidelines. To investigate the correlations of dietary fat and FA consumptions with the odds of asthenozoospermia, we calculated the odds ratios (ORs) and corresponding 95% CIs through unconditional logistic regression models. Relative to the lowest tertile of consumption, the highest tertile of plant-based fat intake was inversely correlated to the odds of asthenozoospermia (OR = 0.68, 95% CI = 0.50-0.91), with a significant dose-response relation (OR = 0.85, 95% CI = 0.75-0.97, per standard deviation increment). Inversely, animal-based MUFA intake (OR = 1.49, 95% CI = 1.04-2.14) was significantly correlated to increased odds of asthenozoospermia, and an evident dose-response relation was also detected (OR = 1.24, 95% CI = 1.05-1.45, per standard deviation increment). Subgroup analyses showed similar patterns of associations to those of the primary results. Moreover, we observed significant interactions on both multiplicative and additive scales between animal-based MUFA and cigarette smoking. Selection bias and recall bias were unavoidable in any of the observational studies. As we failed to obtain the information of trans-fatty acid (TFA) consumption, the relation of TFA intake and asthenozoospermia odds was unclear. This study indicated that different sources of fat and FAs might exert different effects on the etiology of asthenozoospermia, and cigarette smoking could exacerbate the adverse effect of high animal-based MUFA intake on asthenozoospermia. Our findings provide novel evidence pertaining to the fields of prevention of asthenozoospermia through decreasing animal-derived fat and FA consumptions and smoking cessation. Plant-based foods as meat and fat substitutes.

Animal proteins have in the past been used in food production due to their functional properties that range from gelation and emulsification to foaming ability and stability. However, animal husbandry has been shown to be a major contributor to global warming and climate change. Consequently, there has been a drive toward the use of alternative proteins, for example, proteins from plant sources which are perceived to be cheaper, healthier, and sustainable. The use of trans and saturated fatty acids in the food industry has been associated with various health issues that include an increased risk of metabolic disorders. This has resulted in an increased search for fat substitutes that are healthier and sustainable. To contribute toward a reduction in the consumption of meats from animal sources and the consumption of trans and saturated fatty acids, the formulation of plant-based meat and fat analogs/substitutes has been carried out. However, there has been a lower acceptance of these meat or fat substitutes which was attributed to their sensorial and textural properties that fail to mimic or resemble real fat or meat. Therefore, this review aims to discuss the advances that have been made when it comes to plant-based meat and fat substitutes. Additionally, consumer perception and acceptance of these products will be reviewed as well as future markets will be discussed and the opportunities and challenges that exist in the formulation of these products will be explored.

Association between plasma trans fatty acids and chronic periodontitis: Results from a nationally representative cross-sectional survey.

Trans fatty acid (TFA) consumption has been reported to harbor proinflammatory characteristics and increasing oxidative stress properties, but there has been little research into its association with periodontitis. This study aimed to explore the potential association between TFAs and periodontitis. This large population-based study included participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2009-2010). Weighted binary and ordinal logistic regressions were used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to evaluate the relationship between plasma TFAs and periodontitis. A total of 1433 eligible participants, 793 (55.3%) participants with periodontitis and 640 (44.7%) without periodontitis were included. Univariate logistic regression revealed significant associations between plasma trans-11-octadecenoic acid, trans-9-octadecenoic acid, the sum of trans-octadecenoic acids, and the sum of TFAs and periodontitis (all P<0.01). After controlling for the potential confounders, these four types of TFAs remained significantly associated with periodontitis (the ORs and 95% CIs per interquartile range increase were 1.16 (1.01-1.33), 1.20 (1.03-1.39), 1.18 (1.02-1.35), and 1.17 (1.01-1.35), respectively). Notably, these positive associations were more pronounced among overweight/obese populations. Additionally, plasma trans-9-octadecenoic acid levels were found to be associated with periodontitis severity. This study suggests a significant positive association between certain plasma TFAs and chronic periodontitis, especially among overweight/obese populations. These findings provide new insights into periodontitis prevention from a dietary perspective.

The physico-chemical parameters of oleogel samples based on vegetable oil

One of the popular meat products that are in demand among the population of Kazakhstan are sausages. So in the production of sausages, minced meat can contain up to 35% saturated fat. Saturated fats provide the right texture and juiciness, so potential fat substitutes should have good nutritional value and provide the necessary structural and rheological properties. Due to the negative effects of excess consumption of saturated fats and trans fatty acids, there is a need for research into alternative replacements for such fats in meat products. Partial or complete replacement of saturated fats with food oleogels in meat products is the most promising for imparting the desired quality indicators with the content of beneficial unsaturated fatty acids. The purpose of this study was to obtain oleogels based on sunflower and soybean oils and beeswax, as well as further study of their physicochemical, organoleptic characteristics, as well as oxidative stability during storage.The studies were carried out in accordance with the normative and technical documentation. The resulting oleogels can later be used in sausage products to partially replace animal fats and reduce trans-fatty acids.

Nutrient patterns in relation to metabolic health status in overweight and obese adolescents

The association between dietary nutrient patterns (NPs) and metabolic health status has not been investigated in adolescents. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between NPs and metabolic health status in Iranian adolescents with overweight and obesity. In this cross-sectional study, 203 obese/overweight adolescents were selected using a multistage mass random sampling method. To assess usual dietary intakes, a validated food frequency questionnaire was applied. Data of anthropometric and blood pressure were collected. Insulin, lipid profile, and glucose levels were determined using fasting blood samples. Two approaches [International Diabetes Federation (IDF) and a combination of IDF with Homeostasis Model Assessment Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR)] were applied to identify metabolically healthy obese and metabolically unhealthy obese (MUO) adolescents. Participants had a mean age of 13.9 ± 1.61 years and 52.2% of them were girls. Three NPs were identified and labeled as "high minerals and vitamins" (NP1), "high carbohydrate" (NP2) and "high fat and sodium" (NP3). After adjustments for all potential confounders, no significant association was observed between higher adherence to NP1 and NP2 and odds of MUO; however, greater adherence to "high fat and sodium" NP was associated with higher odds of being MUO based on IDF (OR = 3.12; 95% CI 1.19, 8.09) and IDF/HOMA-IR (OR = 2.81; 95% CI 1.02, 7.74) definitions. Stratified analysis revealed that these associations were stronger in boys (versus girls) and obese (versus overweight) adolescents. In conclusion, high adherence to a "high fat and sodium" nutrient pattern was related to elevated chance of being MUO in Iranian adolescents, especially in boys and obese individuals. Therefore, less consumption of trans fatty acids, saturated fatty acids and sodium could be recommended to prevent MUO prevalence especially in boys with obesity.

Assessment of trans-fats in the Maldivian diet

Consumption of trans-fatty acids (TFA), which are unsaturated fatty acids, are associated with increased risk of non-communicable diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the trans-fat content in foods consumed by the Maldivian population and their frequency of consumption of fatty foods likely to contain TFA. The methodology consists of a cross-sectional survey of 600 participants. A screening questionnaire was used to measure/assess the frequency of consumptions of foods containing trans-fats. The results showed that the frequency of consumption of foods containing trans-fats/trans-fatty acids were low among the study participants. Some participants reported that they consume locally-made foods or imported foods which contain trans-fats. Since the Maldives do not have legislations to ban trans-fats from food supplies, the country may be vulnerable to importing foods containing high trans-fats. Therefore, the Maldives may need to consider developing policies on TFA content in oils and foods.

Industrial trans-fat: a cause of concern for Indian population

The trans-fats are a form of unsaturated fatty acids which contain one or more unconjugated double bonds in the trans-configuration. Trans-fat is found in natural sources such as dairy products and meat but the quantity of trans-fatty acid in natural sources is meagre. Most commonly they are found in industrial food products like bakery products, cookies and snacks. Several studies have identified increased industrial trans-fat consumption as harmful to human health. The major effects are on the cardiovascular system and central nervous system. To reduce the trans-fatty acid consumption, the global and national organizations have proposed various approach and strategies like WHO ‘Replace’ action plan strategy, implementation of trade policies and guidelines, work-site intervention strategies, improvements in hydrogenation technology, labeling of food products, behavioural change communication for population. Trans-fatty acid consumption is a modifiable risk factor. Planning and implementation of government policies and guidelines for reduction of trans-fatty acid levels in food product can have a significant impact. But behavioural change among general population is the key to reduce trans-fatty acid consumption.

Development and application of the TFA macrosimulation model: a case study of modelling the impact of trans fatty acid (TFA) elimination policies in Brazil

IntroductionThe consumption of trans-fatty acids (TFA) is directly associated with cardiovascular disease risk and is responsible for a significant health burden globally. The policy strategies for reducing TFA include limiting their content in foods and eliminating partially hydrogenated oils (PHO) in the market. This study aims to describe a comparative risk assessment macrosimulation model and to apply this tool to estimate the potential reductions in CVD mortality gained from the compared scenarios of TFA reduction/elimination in Brazil.MethodologyWe developed and implemented a comparative risk assessment macrosimulation model estimates the potential CVD mortality reduction (coronary heart disease – CHD- and stroke) if TFA intake is reduced in diets. The TFA macrosimulation model estimates the change in the annual number of NCD deaths between baseline with current TFA consumption levels and alternate or counterfactual scenarios, such as considering different limits to TFA content in foods and the elimination of PHO in Brazil in 2018. The model incorporated additional outputs related to other impacts of TFA reduction on DPP, such as Years of Life Lost, Years of Productive Life Lost, and related economic impacts of premature deaths.ResultsIn 2018, a 2% limit for TFA in the oils and fats and a 5% limit of TFAs for other foods could avert or postpone approximately 2,000 deaths (UI 95% 1,899-2,142) and save US$ 32.1 million savings in productivity losses to the economy associated to premature deaths. An intermediate scenario, applying a 2% limit of TFA in all food products In Brazil could prevent or postpone approximately 6,300 deaths (UI 95% 5,925-6,684) and the premature deaths prevented would represent US$ 100.2 million in economic saving. Finally, by banning PHO, approximately 10,500 deaths could be prevented or postponed (UI 95% 9,963 − 10,909), corresponding to US$ 166.7 million in savings to the economy because of premature deaths.ConclusionThe TFA macrosimulation model can efficiently compare different policy scenarios for trans fats reduction policies at the country level and proves that the elimination of PHOs from the food market in Brazil may significantly reduce the health burden of trans fatty acids in the country compared to other policy options. The model also represents a useful public health tool to support TFA reduction and elimination policies in other countries.

Trans fatty acid intake and risk of type 2 diabetes in the NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort

Abstract Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is one of the most common noncommunicable diseases worldwide, with an increasing prevalence and a considerable global health burden. Substantial evidence has linked consumption of trans fatty acids (TFAs) to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. However, the effects of T2D remain unclear. We aimed to investigate the associations between different types of TFAs (total, ruminant, industrial and corresponding specific isomers) and risk of T2D in the NutriNet-Santé prospective cohort. Overall, 105,551 participants aged 18 years or older from the French NutriNet-Santé cohort (2009-2021) were included (mean age at baseline=42.7y (SD = 14.6y), 79.2% women). Dietary intake data, including usual TFA intake, were collected using repeated 24-hour dietary records (n = 5.7 [SD = 3.1]). Associations between sex-specific quartiles of dietary intake of TFAs and type 2 diabetes risk were assessed using multivariable Cox proportional hazard models adjusted for known risk factors. A total of 969 incident type 2 diabetes cases occured during follow-up. Total TFAs was associated with higher T2D risk (HRfor quartile 4 versus 1=1.38; 95% CI = 1.11-1.73; Ptrend&amp;lt;0.001). This association, specifically observed for industrial TFAs (HR = 1.45; 95% CI = 1.15-1.83; Ptrend&amp;lt;0.001), was mainly driven by elaidic acid (HR = 1.37; 95% CI = 1.09-1.72; Ptrend&amp;lt;0.001) and linolelaidic acid (HR = 1.29; 95% CI = 1.04-1.58; Ptrend=0.07). In contrast, ruminant trans fatty acids were not significantly associated with the risk of T2D. In this large prospective cohort, higher dietary intakes of total and industrial TFAs were associated with increased T2D risk. These findings support WHO's recommendation to eliminate industrially-produced TFAs from the food supply worldwide. As such, consumers should be advised to limit the consumption of food products containing partially hydrogenated oils (main vector of iTFAs) as this, specifically, may contribute to lower the substantial global burden of T2D. Key messages • Higher dietary intakes of total and industrial trans fatty acids were associated with increased type 2 diabetes risk. • Our findings support WHO’s recommendation to eliminate industrially-produced TFAs from the food supply worldwide.

Association between Different Types of Edible Oils and Anthropometric Indices Mood, and Appetite among Women.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between consumption of dietary oils and anthropometric indices, mood, and appetite among women staff of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. A cross-sectional study design was used, and 245 women staff of Tehran University of Medical Sciences participated. A 168-item food frequency questionnaire was used to evaluate dietary and nutrient intake. The association between liquid vegetable oils, hydrogenated vegetable oil, and animal fat intake and anthropometric indices, appetite, and mood was evaluated. The Profile of Mood States (POMS) questionnaire was used to assess mood. A Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was used to evaluate appetite status. The tape measure was used to measure the waist circumference and height. SPSS was used to compute body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). In the present study, sunflower and frying oil were the most consumed liquid oils (n = 135/245 participants). Participants with a moderate intake of MUFA had greater odds ratio (OR: 3.47; 95% CI: 1.20-10.7; P trend = 0.025) of a high appetite compared to those with a low intake of MUFA. However, the study found no evidence of an association between consumption of edible oils (vegetable oils, animal fat oils, and other fatty acid sources) and mood, anthropometric indices, or appetite. In the current research, we noticed a significant connection between moderate intake of MUFA and a large appetite and no association between consumption of edible oils and other outcomes. In conclusion, a balanced diet low in fast meals, processed foods, cakes, cookies, and sweets is suggested to limit the consumption of artificial trans-fatty acids.

Design and Validation of a Food Frequency Questionnaire to Evaluate the Consumption of Trans Fatty Acids in the Adult Population (FFQ-TFA).

Instruments for estimating the intake of food components can be useful in the prevention and/or treatment of diseases related to improper diet. There is, at present, no scientifically validated instrument for estimating consumption of trans fatty acids (TFA) in the Mexican population. The objective of this study was to design and validate such an instrument: a questionnaire that can be used to estimate consumption of TFA from food products. The questionnaire was applied to 162 students from the Autonomous University of Querétaro (UAQ). There were two phases to the study: (1) design of a food frequency questionnaire to assess consumption of trans fatty acids (FFQ-TFA) and an eating practices questionnaire (EPQ-TFA); (2) validation of the instrument. Content validity was measured by expert review and by Aiken’s V method, obtaining an overall score of 0.895. As final tests for the FFQ-TFA analysis, criterion validity was measured using Spearman’s correlation (r = 0.717, p < 0.01) and a linear regression (B = 0.668), considering the results of the 24-h dietary recall (24 HR); and reproducibility or temporal stability was measured using Pearson’s correlation (r = 0.406, p < 0.01). Subsequently, a Pearson correlation was applied between TFA consumption estimated by the FFQ-TFA-2 and the global score from the EPQ-TFA-2 (r = 0.351, p < 0.01). A Pearson correlation was applied between the EPQ-TFA-1 and the EPQ-TFA-2 (r = 0.575, p < 0.01). TFA consumption per day was 2.49 ± 1.32 g in the participating population, which was 1.04 ± 0.51% of their total kcal consumption.
