Positive impact of urbanization on vegetation growth has been continuously strengthening in arid regions of China

The ecological environment is fragile in arid regions, and the direct and indirect impacts of continuing urbanization on vegetation growth in cities still need to be studied in depth. In this study, we focused on four provincial capital cities (Urumqi, Lanzhou, Yinchuan, and Hohhot) in arid regions of China. We used continuous 30 m land cover and vegetation greenness (VG) data from 1990 to 2021 to extract the impact of urbanization on vegetation growth by separating the impact of natural conditions. Our results showed that the study area’s urban area (UA) had expanded rapidly at a rate of 39.2 km2/a, increasing by 3.39 times between 1990 and 2021. While urban expansion occurred rapidly, the overall VG of the study area also increased (slope = 2.16 × 10−3), with the enhancement of VG increasing gradually from west to east. The VG and its trend in the UA were significantly higher than those in the natural vegetation area (NA). In addition, the duration of the urban vegetation growth season was longer than that of the NA, which also confirmed the positive impact of urbanization on the vegetation growth period. Furthermore, we found that the positive impact of urbanization on vegetation had continuously strengthened over time. In 1990 and 2021, the VG areas had 83% and 87% above the ‘zero-impact line’ in the UA, respectively, indicating a very significant impact of urbanization on vegetation growth in arid regions with fragile natural conditions. Our study identified the long-term dynamic trends in urbanization and VG in arid regions and clarified the non-linear relationship between the two concurrent growth factors. This has significant implications for correctly understanding the impact of urbanization on vegetation in arid regions and can provide a scientific reference for the ecological construction of urban environments in the region.

Evaluation of the livability of arid urban environments under global warming: A multi-parameter approach

To support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, know the livability spatial distribution in the global arid regions, It is necessary to construct a comprehensive, accurate and timeliness spatial livability evaluation method. This study combined the perspective of subjective perceived environment and objective environmental supplying. Several parameters (land use type, traffic accessibility, vegetation coverage, available water resources, terrain (slope, altitude, and topographic relief) and land surface temperature) were chosen to form the livability evaluation system for arid urban environment. A case study was carried out based on Yinchuan City. Livability was calculated pixel by pixel and the study area was divided into five grades: Least livable, Unlivable, Generally livable, Relatively livable, and Livable. Results show that the influence of indexes on livability was as follows: LST > LUT > TA > VC > AWR >A >S > TR. Moreover, the spatial distribution of livability is highly consistent with the corresponding population distribution. The surface thermal environment of cities may decrease human comfort, which agrees with the urban development features of Yinchuan. The proposed method is demonstrated to be robust and reliable and can provide new ideas for better construction of urban environments.

Energy saving and ecological exploration of buildings

In the context of increasingly serious environmental problems, construction, the main factor that is unfavorable to the environment, has drawn significant attention. This has allowed green and sustainable buildings to be developed. China is now entering the 21st century and experiencing a stage of rapid development. The construction of urban environments is a key issue because of the complex background and various restrictive factors. Truly green building must be well-regulated from the initial design stages, material procurement, construction and operation. The article summarises and explores the goals, energy conservation, technology, and management involved in green building development.

Evaluation of Urban Thermal Comfort and Its Relationship with Land Use/Land Cover Change: A Case Study of Three Urban Agglomerations, China

With the acceleration of urbanization in China, the urban surface thermal environment has undergone significant changes. This work aims to calculate the urban thermal comfort index using a temperature and humidity model with the land surface temperature and relative humidity. It also aims to explain the association between the land use/land cover change (LUCC) and urban surface thermal environment of the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) Region, the Guangdong–Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and the Yangtze River Delta (YZD) in 2020, 2015, 2010 and 2005 using geographically weighted regression. The results reveal that (1) the three urban agglomerations have substantial heat island intensity regions, which are clustered and zonally distributed, and the annual average rates of the heat island area growth in the three regions are 1.01%, 1.41% and 1.09%, respectively. (2) Many uncomfortable areas exist in the three urban agglomerations, with an exponential growth trend in summer, and the annual average proportion of the uncomfortable areas in the three regions are 60.8%, 56.8% and 49.4%, respectively. (3) From the spatial point of view, the high-thermal comfort index areas of Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao expand to the coast, and the high-index areas of the Yangtze River Delta expand to the inland. In terms of time, the annual distribution of thermal comfort in Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei is discrete, but the annual distribution of thermal comfort in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and the Yangtze River Delta is concentrated. (4) In LUCC, the change intensity in construction land has a remarkable effect on the change in thermal comfort. The areas where the thermal comfort index increases positively correlate with the areas where the construction land increases. This study enriches the research on the impact of LUCC on urban ecological performance, and thus provides the necessary scientific basis for urban environment construction.

Current trends in the development of public sports areas in urban environment

Purpose: Identification and substantiation of prerequisites for the comprehensive sports dissemination and accessibility at all urban planning levels and recreation network in the architectural and spatial environment. Methodology: Development of the principles of sports facilities. The analysis of types, features and characteristics of the urban environment construction; the nature of communicative connections and their role in the organization of public sports areas. The algorithm is proposed for the construction of sports areas in the urban environment as a means of social integration into the culture. Originality: Modern requirements for a comfortable stay of recreants are considered using the principles of sustainability, adaptability, uniqueness. Practical implications: The proposed urban environment will attract the attention of citizens to sports and improve the social environment.

Community public health safety emergency management and nursing insurance service optimization for digital healthy urban environment construction.

The purpose of this paper is to promote the construction of digital healthy cities and improve the living standards of urban residents. Based on this, this paper analyzes the development of healthy cities, and studies community public health safety emergency management and nursing insurance service optimization methods for healthy urban environment construction. First, the concept of digital healthy urban environment construction is discussed. Then, the role of environmental health is discussed. Finally, two methods are designed to study the emergency management of public health safety and nursing insurance services in urban communities under the condition of environmental health. The results show that in the environmental health score of the city, the scores of X1 (the urban air quality excellent rate) and X6 (citizens' satisfaction with the environmental quality) were relatively low between 2016 and 2018, below 0.5 points. The scores for the remaining 3 years were relatively high, above 0.5. The scores of X2 (green coverage rate of built-up area), X3 (average grade sound effect of environmental noise in urban area), X4 (harmless treatment rate of domestic waste) and X5 (centralized treatment rate of domestic sewage) were relatively high from 2016 to 2018, above 0.5 points, and relatively low in the remaining 3 years, below 0.5 points. Meanwhile, residents are very satisfied with information collection and information management in public health and safety emergency management, and the number of very satisfied people is basically more than 40%. Satisfaction with resource allocation and privacy management is high, and the number of very satisfied people is basically above 30%. However, the satisfaction with risk perception and management measures is very low, and the number of very satisfied people is basically below 20%. It shows that the current construction of the community's public health and safety emergency management system is relatively poor in terms of X2-X5, while the development of X1 and X6 is relatively mature. The research not only provides a reference for the construction and improvement of a digital healthy city, but also contributes to the improvement of the healthy life of urban residents.

Analysis on synergistic effects of the ecological environment construction and the economic growth — a case study of Shandong Province, China

Ecological environment construction is an important strategic decision to achieve sustainable development. It is also a potential motive force to ensure longterm, steady and orderly development of the economy. In consideration of the fact that Shandong Province is the typical epitome of China in the new era, this paper is based on comprehensive investigations on the construction status of ecological environment in 17 cities of Shandong Province, and constructs an analysis framework of the ecological environment construction and economic growth. Using methodologies of AHP Evaluation Model, Co-Integration Analysis, Granger Causality Test and Error Correction Model etc., this paper makes the empirical studies on the relations between environmental protection investment, industrial pollution control, urban environment construction, natural resources conservation and the ecological environment construction in Shandong Province. Our research found that: the overall level of ecological environment construction in Shandong province has been constantly and steadily enhanced, among which the level of urban environment construction has risen the most, followed by environmental protection investment, industrial pollution control and natural resources conservation. Besides, there is a long-term equilibrium relation between the ecological environment construction and economic growth of Shandong Province, among which the bidirectional synergistic effect on the environmental protection investment and economic growth of eastern Shandong is the most remarkable. Therefore, this paper puts forward countermeasures and suggestions, for example, implementing ecological development policies towards spatial differences, improving the ecological environment management, actively implementing environmental economic policies etc.

The article deals with theoretical and practical analysis of modern approaches to the study of the city and urban culture, which in the study is un- derstood as a special phenomenon that ontologically determines the form and content of cultures in various manifestations of socio-cultural practice: physical, symbolic, mental. That is, a special space of embodiment of the semantic and symbolic needs and interests of human cultural activity. Modern processes of globalization and the rapid development of cities are definitely changing the role of the city, its space, affect cultural tradi- tions, creative subjects of culture, innovative practices and cultural policy in general. The change in the semantic dominant and functions of the city is reflected in the search for a special urban space and culture, which are certain symbols of urban identity and their influence in general on the infrastructure of cities, urban rhythm of life, creation of architectural structures, etc. Particular attention is paid to the factors that influence the development of the city and urban culture, it is the loss of special relationships be- tween people, urban space and the environment, as well as the mechanisms of transfer of cultural heritage, as a symbol of collective aspirations, values. It is argued that the uncontrolled growth, glut, growth of industrial relations, consumer character and the leveling of the value basis of human interaction, the feeling of alienation, the growth of violent activity, as well as artificial modeling of urban space and destruction of the environ- ment, are not only evidence of "absolute indifference" of the cities but also the devastating changes in the cultural and symbolic system of the city. In such a torn apart, polycentric world of the modern city ("techno cities", "exemplary ghost cities" "cyborg-cities"), a person loses rational integri- ty and psychological stability, and needs more harmonious techno-natural and cultivated space. There has been demonstrated the experience of harmonious construction of urban environment (E. Howard's "garden-city", "zoo policy") and various practices ("ecology of culture", "visual ecolo- gy", etc.) of creation, and its influence on interpersonal interaction that requires significant sociocultural transformations. The progressive development of the city and urban culture is creating new conditions for socio-cultural development. Which in a certain way requires dramatic changes in the creation of a harmonious urban space and the reproduction of the diversity of cultural habitat, the creation of the unified natural-semiotic environment.

Study on Rural Environment Design Based on Public Art Aesthetics Perspective

It has put forward the beautiful rural construction in the report delivered at the18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China after the high speed urbanization and modern urban environment construction. With profound cultural deposits, the rural area is the virgin land of regional feature and local civilization and also the source of beautiful homesickness. However, the rural public art is an important symbol and reflection of rural mature development. This paper analyzes the existing problems of rural environmental engineering construction and puts forward the corresponding solutions and development strategies on the basis of the rural public art and practical significance, thus opening up the new thinking for the design and construction rural environment engineering.

APPLICATION OF THE SEBAL MODEL FOR DETERMINING THE NET RADIATION IN THE CARIRI CEARENSE REGION

The urbanization process has contributed directly to the variation of climatic conditions, since this is mainly due to the substitution of vegetation cover for the construction of urban environments. The removal of these areas of vegetation implies changes in their albedo patterns and monochromatic reflectance causing an irregularity in the radiation distribution cycle. Thus, the objective of this work is to determine the balance of radiation in the Cariri Cearense region, by remote sensing using the algorithm SEBAL (Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land) and Landsat 5TM images 2616/65 on 07/30/2006, 08/18/2007, 09/21/2008, 09/24/2009, 10/13/2010, 08/29/2011. For a more detailed appreciation of the values of net radiation (Rn), three targets were chosen in the scene, which were: native forest, sparse forest, exposed soil area. All these targets located to windward of the Chapada do Araripe. The Rn estimates showed an increase in dense native forest regions due to the greater vegetative area, in all the images studied. The values for sparse forest and exposed soil were lower.

Influence of the Twelfth National Games of China on Urban Construction in Shenyang City

Large-scale sports meeting can generally exert influence on host city planning and construction. Questionnaire survey and interview were applied to analyze the change of Shenyang City construction from The Twelfth National Games of China (TNGC). Firstly, we discussed the infrastructure construction during preparatory period of TNGC. And then, effects on urban public facilities and urban environment construction were explored in detail. Results indicated that both public facilities and urban environment construction have been improved during TNGC in general. However, the opinion of residents also showed some discord, and reflected some problems in urban construction which need be amended.

Provincializing Urban Political Ecology: Towards a Situated UPE Through African Urbanism

Urban political ecology (UPE) has provided critical insights into the sociomaterial construction of urban environments, their unequal distribution of resources, and contestation over power and resources. Most of this work is rooted in Marxist urban geographical theory, which provides a useful but limited analysis. Such works typically begin with a historical-materialist theory of power, then examine particular artifacts and infrastructure to provide a critique of society. We argue that there are multiple ways of expanding this framing, including through political ecology or wider currents of Marxism. Here, we demonstrate one possibility: starting from theory and empirics in the South, specifically, African urbanism. We show how African urbanism can inform UPE and the associated research methods, theory and practice to create a more situated UPE. We begin suggesting what a situated UPE might entail: starting with everyday practices, examining diffuse forms of power, and opening the scope for radical incrementalism.
