The authenticity advantage: How influencer authenticity management strategies shape digital engagement with sponsored videos

Platforms, marketers, and video influencers aim to increase user engagement with sponsored videos. Whereas some video influencers effectively incorporate commercial content into their videos and drive digital engagement, others do not. What makes some sponsored videos more effective than others? Drawing upon the literature on authenticity and persuasion knowledge, this study identifies video influencers’ authenticity management strategies and examines how they interact with influencer characteristics in shaping digital engagement. Specifically, this work examines the role of information disclosure and passion expression in driving digital engagement and investigates the moderating role of influencer competence and influencer–brand fit. Based on 675 sponsored videos from Bilibili, the results reveal that two-sided messages, sponsorship disclosure, brand love passion, and self-identity construction positively drive digital engagement. Furthermore, influencers’ competence enhances the effects of two-sided messages, and sponsorship disclosure on digital engagement and influencer–brand fit decreases the effect of self-identity construction on digital engagement. These findings shed light on how authenticity management strategies shape responses to influencer-sponsored content and deepen the understanding regarding the drivers of digital engagement.

An Analysis of Volition and Self-Identity Construction in Ai Qing’s Poem

The Chinese poet Ai Qing (pen name of Jiang Zhenghan) advocated expressing one’s innermost thoughts directly through poetry, and his poems often used straightforward language to convey strong volition. This article examines Ai Qing’s poetry from the perspectives of form and the process of imagination, using Coleridge's theory of imagination and Ai Qing’s own poetic philosophy. It seeks to explore the volition embodied in Ai Qing’s poetry and how he constructs his own identity through poetry. In terms of form, Ai Qing adhered to “the prose beauty of poetry,” expressing the hope to break free from constraints, liberate thoughts, and assert personal will. Through the unconventional imagination process in his poems, Ai Qing reveals the unconscious self-agent of the poet to speak for the people and an active perspective on the interplay between the poet’s self-agent and the external world. It is the combination of poetic form and the creative process of imagination that constructs Ai Qing’s identity as a national poet yearning for freedom, revolution, and yet filled with a sense of concern.

The Role of Digital Identity in the Age of Social Media: Literature Analysis on Self-Identity Construction and Online Social Interaction

This study investigates the role of digital identity in the age of social media, focusing on how self-identity is constructed and how it influences online social interactions. The primary objective is to qualitatively analyze the literature on digital identity to understand the mechanisms by which individuals construct their online personas and the implications for social interactions in digital spaces. The research employs a qualitative literature review methodology, synthesizing findings from academic articles, theoretical papers, and empirical studies on digital identity and social media interactions. The literature review methodology involves systematically collecting, reviewing, and analyzing a wide range of scholarly sources that address the construction of digital identity and its impact on social behavior. The study categorizes the literature into key themes, such as identity formation, self-presentation, privacy concerns, and the psychological effects of online interactions. By examining diverse perspectives and case studies, the research provides a comprehensive overview of the current understanding of digital identity dynamics. The findings reveal that digital identity is a complex, multifaceted construct influenced by both individual and social factors. Social media platforms provide a space for individuals to curate and present idealized versions of themselves, which can affect self-esteem and social validation. The literature indicates that while digital identity offers opportunities for self-expression and community building, it also raises concerns about authenticity, privacy, and the potential for identity fragmentation. The role of social media in shaping identity highlights the importance of digital literacy and the need for policies that protect users' online privacy and identity. In conclusion, the study underscores the critical role of digital identity in contemporary social interactions and the necessity for ongoing research into its implications for mental health, social behavior, and privacy. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to track the evolution of digital identity over time and investigate strategies to promote healthy identity practices in the digital age.

Self-identity construction via self-reference in pre-modern Chinese intellectuals’ letters home: A case study

This study explores pre-modern Chinese intellectuals’ identity construction through the choice of self-referring forms in their letters home. Based on a case study of Hu Shih's letters home, it categorizes the self-referring forms he used and self-identities he constructed, and further investigates the underlying sociocultural factors. It shows that Hu Shih employed four categories of self-referring forms, namely first-person pronouns, kinship terms, names, nicknames, and pen names, and appositive expressions. With these forms of self-reference, he constructed himself as a kin member, an independent person, and a scholar. Hu's construction of the first self-identity might have been influenced by the traditional family ethics and ideology prevalent within Chinese social structure, whereas that of the other two could be ascribed to the emerging social changes at the historical turning point, and scholarly principles. The study provides a new perspective for understanding traditional Chinese intellectuals’ letters home in the pre-modern society of China.

Recognition and Motivation: A Study on the Strategies for Improving the Career Attractiveness of Nursing Workers in Nursing Institutions

Nursing staff in nursing institutions are the guardians of the growing "silver age" of the elderly, and they are the solid arms of the elderly institutions to support the happiness of the elderly in their old age. The project members investigated 6 different types of elderly care institutions in Nanjing, and explored the basic situation and career attractiveness of institutional caregivers through qualitative interviews, and analyzed the dilemma of occupational attractiveness. Adhere to the problem-oriented, combined with the logic and influencing factors of the construction of the professional self-identity of the nursing staff, from the aspects of the social environment, institutional system and personal development of the professional self-identity construction of the nursing staff, and put forward constructive and targeted suggestions, aiming to promote the construction of the professional self-identity of the elderly care workers in China, and promote the improvement of nursing quality and the healthy development of the nursing career.

Mahasweta Devi's Mother of 1084: The Traumatic Journey of a Mother in Search of Self-Identity

Many writers in post-colonial India come forward with an aim to represent the oppressed in their writings. Arundhuti Roy, Shobha Dey, Amitava Ghosh, Bharati Mukherjee and many others tried their hands in different way to uplift the marginalized people. But it is only Mahasweta Devi who becomes successfully able to write the subaltern history from below by enabling them to articulate strong voice proper to an alternative history where the true documents of their suffering, deprivation and humiliation are inscribed with a hint to fight back. Mahasweta Devi’s Mother of 1084 (1974) was one of such rare documents which would not only retrieve political history of the period but also reconstruct the true identity of a mother, a wife, Sujata in contemporary patriarchal society. This article will intend to unveil the iron curtain of disguised history written by the institutionalized Organization along with construction of self-identity of a bereaved mother, Sujata through her traumatic journey from ignorance to experience of reality.

Navigating intimacy and queer entrepreneurship: Relational work in Taiwanese lesbian couples’ business endeavors

This study addresses the significant gap in the entrepreneurship literature concerning the experiences of sexual minority groups, particularly Taiwanese lesbian entrepreneurs. The prevailing focus on heterosexual men has overshadowed the distinct motivations and dynamics in queer entrepreneurship. Drawing on Zelizer’s concept of relational work and incorporating feminist perspectives, this investigation explores how Taiwanese lesbian couples engage in entrepreneurial pursuits in unique local gender culture. Taiwan’s gender cultural context, mainly shaped by Confucianism and Taoism, contributes to the relative acceptance of lesbian relationships and marriages, reducing social criticism. By skillfully utilizing the cultural repertoire of filial piety, lesbian entrepreneurs strengthen their bonds with parents, facilitating both their business endeavors and intimate relationships. In addition, lesbian entrepreneurship is often overlooked and subsumed under gay entrepreneurship, leading to the assumption of ‘gay ordinariness’. The study highlights a significant difference between Taiwanese lesbian entrepreneurs and gay counterparts; the former perform intimate relational work and prioritize emotional ties in entrepreneurial pursuits, while the latter emphasize rational economic outlook. The findings underscore that entrepreneurial motivations are multifaceted, encompassing liberation, empowerment, family bonding, and self-identity construction. Taiwanese lesbian entrepreneurs exemplify the importance of intimate relational work, challenging the dominant masculine economic orientation in entrepreneurship. This research contributes to a more comprehensive understanding of queer entrepreneurship and calls for greater recognition of diverse motivations and dynamics in entrepreneurial pursuits.

Symbolic interactionism: exploring the experience of traditional costume in a destination

ABSTRACT As a symbol of cultural exchange, destination clothing experience is of great importance in the construction of tourists’ identity, especially the traditional clothing experience. In recent years, Hanfu has gradually become a representative symbol of Chinese culture, and many tourist attractions have become the initial platform of Hindu use. Nevertheless, previous research on tourism experience paid little attention to traditional clothing experiences in tourism, and the interaction mechanism therein has not yet been fully investigated. Hence, this study explores the experiential mechanism of tourists wearing Hanfu in a destination and analyzes the role of tourism experience in tourists’ self-perception. Xi’an, China was chosen as the case location, and data were obtained through participant observation and semi-structured interviews. Based on grounded theory, this study extracted 53 initial categories which were then categorised into 13 sub-categories, which were further re-organised into six main categories, and then constructed a storyline of the process-mechanism model of tourists’ Hanfu experience. Major findings show that tourists’ self-consciousness is generated when wearing Hanfu. Furthermore, the interaction can strengthen tourists’ cultural identity and contribute to the self-identity construction; self-consciousness sublimates self-identity, place attachment and patriotism. The present study supplements existing research on tourism experience and provides valuable insights for effective marketing in tourist destinations.

The Impact of The Double Reduction Policy on The Construction of The Professional Identity of Tutoring Class Teachers

The double reduction policy launched by our country on July 24, 2021 aims to reduce the number of teachers in private teaching auxiliary institutions for basic education, achieve a fair distribution of educational resources, and reduce the academic burden of students and the pressure of extracurricular tutoring. However, the research on the self-identity construction of cram school teachers after the "double reduction policy" is still a blank field. This paper focuses on the status quo of the professional status of teachers in private tutoring institutions after the "double reduction policy". The authors' data are based on fixed structured interviews with 6 teachers from private tutoring institutions in different regions of China. The results show that after the double reduction policy, the professional identity of teachers in private teaching auxiliary institutions is based on their professional beliefs and has not been significantly affected. The discussion in this article prompts each teacher to reflect on his own identity factors, and at the same time complements the construction of the professional identity framework of teachers in private teaching auxiliary institutions.

Self-Consciousness as a Construction All the Way Down.

Contemporary mind and brain sciences provide theories and data that seem to confirm a hypothesis about human nature that we might formulate as follows. Human life is conditioned by a need that is no less important than elementary biological needs (such as survival and reproduction) or universal forms of social competition: the need to build and, indeed, defend a subjective identity whose solidity and clarity are the foundation of our intra- and inter-personal equilibrium and therefore of psychological well-being and mental health. In this article, distancing ourselves from a neo-Cartesian position still prevalent in the philosophy of mind and approaching instead the outcomes of contemporary cognitive sciences, we sketch the complex interweaving of the cognitive, emotional, and affective elements that are constitutive of subjective identity, with a focus on the role played in self-identity construction by Theory-of-Mind abilities. We will suggest that, at every stage of self-construction, individuals engage in processes of understanding others that have a largely innate basis. In this perspective, a mature self-awareness is somewhat secondary to the knowledge of others, an evolutionarily refined acquisition primarily serving as a defense mechanism.

Constructing Identity Through Sex-Consumption: The Consumerist Narratives of Israeli Men Who Pay Women for Sex

ABSTRACT This study examined how consumerism shapes the identity construction processes of Israeli men who pay women for sex (MPWS). Using the theoretical framework of symbolic interaction and the theoretical concept of extended self, we explored how Israeli MPWS extend their selves through sex-consumption. To this end, we conducted in-depth semi-structured interviews with 23 Israeli MPWS. An interpretive epistemology and a constructivist grounded theory methodology guided the data-analysis. We conceptualized three dynamics of self-identity construction processes through sex-consumption: Extending the self through assimilation of products or experiences, Extending the self through the purchasing process, and Extending the self through consuming the imagined. The findings revealed a complex process, whereby MPWS attribute various and contradictory meanings to their possessions, their consumerist experiences, and their purchasing processes. We conclude that consumerism is central to the meanings that MPWS attribute to their engagement in the sex industry. Thus, the theoretical framework of consumerism should be further applied to future studies in this field in order to gain a nuanced and deeper understanding of MPWS and the phenomenon of sex consumption.

Therefore, this paper suggests that in order to pay attention to the formation of children's self-identity, it is necessary to work together from multiple subjects and aspects. First of all, in a multicultural society, it is necessary to understand different cultures with an open and inclusive attitude, so that children can be exposed to more perspectives and enrich their cognition. Second, parents should give children support and correct guidance. Schools and other educational departments should strengthen the education and guidance of children.

Construction of Personal Identity for Outside Baduy Citizens on Instagram Social

Social media serves as a means for users to place themselves in the desired framework. Through social media, people can quickly build relationships, add insight, shape, express, and display their identity. Discussions about self-identity become unique and exciting when a Baduy citizen uses social media and forms his identity. Of course, we already know that the Baduy are one of the tribes in the Banten region and are a group of indigenous peoples in the interior who still adhere to the culture of their ancestors. The purpose of this study is to examine how outside Baduy residents construct their identities on Instagram social media. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method. The study results show that outside Baduy residents are familiar with gadgets and Instagram social media. The motive for using social media is to promote Baduy products and culture. Instagram makes it easy to access information. The construction of self-identity on Instagram is shown by posting pictures of Baduy characteristics or identities, such as the Instagram account name added with the word "Baduy", Baduy clothes and accessories, daily activities in Kanekes Village, and original Baduy products and customs.

In 1759, Louise d’Épinay published Lettres à mon fils, an epistolary work addressed to Louis Joseph de Lalive d’Épinay. The twelve letters summarize the educational principles she advocates for, as well as the concept of self-identity construction. I address the idea of educating one’s conscience and analyse the way in which the springs of one’s personality are driven not by a society dominated by superficiality and artifice, but by the just principles of good and truth, as revealed by a conscience endowed with discernment and dedicated to achieving happiness, rather than aiming at one’s own satisfaction. I also discuss the idea of self-knowledge: the innate and acquired qualities that are to be continuously perfected by means of the will and effort and put in the service of the other, which also acts as a defence against any form of negative influence. An exercise in discernment, carefully directed towards oneself and the world, contributes to the refinement of conscience: in this sense, education must emphasize the role of language as the vehicle of truth and virtue as the essence of an honest man. The stage of childhood, for an aristocrat, is oriented towards discovering one’s vocation, which allows one to contribute to the improvement of society.

Responsive strategies and self-identity construction in “Versailles Humblebragging” on Chinese social media

Abstract Versailles humblebragging is becoming an increasingly pervasive pragmatic and linguistic phenomenon since late 2020 in face-to-face and social media communication in China. Despite its ubiquity, there is a relative paucity of empirical research on this new phenomenon, particularly on the reactions of followers in the digital communicative context and the self-identities constructed by the posters, as well as the theoretical limitations to explicate the social cognitive factors behind the novel pragmatic behavior. This study integrated pragmatic and social cognitive theories to conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses of the responsive strategies followers used and the self-identity the humblebraggers built in this phenomenon. Based on the data retrieved from Chinese social media Weibo, we have found generally two major types of responsive strategies, namely the explicit and implicit. A majority of followers employed the implicit strategies to express their acceptance and liking with a preponderance of clicking the “like” affordance, suggesting that Versailles humblebragging helps to build good interpersonal relationship on Weibo. We have also identified seven types of self-identities and explored the underlying factors from the perspective of social cognition. It might be concluded from the findings that certain social and cultural shared beliefs, values and patterns of life are potent factors in shaping Chinese posters’ interpretation of themselves and other people.

Design and validation of a scale of core components of community interventions in mental health.

To develop and validate an instrument to identify the core components of community strategies for mental health, especially mutual aid groups: The Mutual Aid Scale . 135 community strategies leaders participated in the study. The core components are active agency, coping strategies, recognition, and management of emotions, problem-solving strategies, supportive interaction, trust, self-identity construction, and strengthening of social networks. With these components a scale was designed. Content validity was carried out in addition to an exploratory factor analysis. Two dimensions resulted, strengthening of agency capacity and Coping strategies, and the internal consistency of both factors was acceptable, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.722 and 0.727, respectively. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) statistic was used with a score of 0.831 and the Barlett Sphericity Test, with a significant value of 265.175. This scale identifies the components of community interventions for mental health and can contribute to a better implementation of these strategies. It also articulates autonomous community processes with strategies developed in health services.

The embodied experience and self-identity construction of Chinese gay tourists in Thailand

This study proposes an extension of the interactive ritual chain model that explores the intrinsic construction of the embodied experience and self-identity of Chinese gay tourists visiting Thailand. The expanded elements include stock, tension, loose, and transformation, which can reflect the intrinsic association of the inner interaction framework. An exploratory sequential mixed methodology approach was adopted. It includes the interviews of 16 respondents followed by a questionnaire survey involving 330 respondents. While most previous research subjects and contexts are from Western countries, this study adds a new knowledge framework and empirical basis for the tourism interactions and identity-based tourism of gay tourists in non-Western countries. This study has practical implications for policymakers in gay tourism destinations in Asia, particularly as this study provides a better understanding of the tourism psychology and behavior of Asian gay tourists, which may be useful in guiding tourism recovery policies in gay-friendly destinations in Asia.
