Ranking locations for producing hydrogen using geothermal energy in Afghanistan

Geothermal energy is a type of renewable energy with high availability and independence from climatic and atmospheric conditions. It has been shown that geothermal energy is technically, economically and environmentally more suitable for hydrogen production than other renewable sources. Hydrogen has wide applications in many fields including cooling, oil, gas, petrochemical, nuclear, and energy industries. Afghanistan has significant potential in geothermal power generation and also several hydrogen-consuming industries that provide opportunities for geothermal-based hydrogen production. This study attempted to find suitable locations for the construction of geothermal power plant for hydrogen production in Afghanistan. Given the multitude of criteria involved in the choice of location, evaluations and comparisons were performed using multi-criteria decision-making methods. Nine criteria were used to evaluate 17 Afghanistan provinces in terms of suitability for geothermal-based hydrogen production. The SWARA (Stepwise Weight Assessment Ratio Analysis) method was used to weight the criteria and then the ARAS (Additive Ratio Assessment) method was used to rank the provinces. The results were validated. The results showed that Sari pul, Balkh and Herat are the most suitable Afghanistan provinces and Zabul, Ghor and Kandahar are the least suitable Afghanistan provinces for geothermal-based hydrogen production. The three methods produced almost identical rankings with only minor differences in the overall ranking of some provinces.

Understanding Social Acceptance of Geothermal Energy: A Case Study from Mt. Lawu, Indonesia

Geothermal energy in Indonesia holds important role in country’s transformations into renewable energy to ensure clean, reliable, and sustainable energy sources. In order to optimize geothermal energy project, it is important to consider the balance of economy, socio-cultural, and environmental aspects. The socio-cultural aspect is critical in the public acceptance of the project and overcome the social resistance. Understanding citizen’s preferences towards the development of geothermal energy leads to the greater understanding of what shapes of strategies and policies should be taken in the project. Based on the interviews with local communities, they reject the construction of geothermal power plants in Mt. Lawu because they think geothermal power plants will give negative impacts to cultural, environmental, economic, and social life aspects in society. This perception may appear because of the lack of understanding of geothermal energy.

Geothermal resourses of Ukraine

A technique for the assessment of Ukraine’s geothermal resources is discussed in terms of the intensity of the Earth’s heat flow. The availability (density) of thermal resources in major tectonic regions has been estimated. Their reserves are shown to be 25 times larger than known reserves of all fossil fuel deposits. Three areas of Ukraine have been categorized as suitable for the construction of geothermal power plants. In other areas, cost-effective energy production for heating purposes is feasible.

Analysis of civil society movements: the case of construction of geothermal power plant in Mount Talang Area

Geothermal energy is seen as one of the potential energy sources developed at present and in the future. In addition, geothermal energy is also claimed as environmentally friendly energy. However, the development and utilization of this energy are not fully accepted by all parties. Discourse on renewable and environmentally friendly energy clashes with issues of social injustice on a broader scale the problem of humanity and the environment. This study aims to analyze the movements developed by civil society in advocating the interests of the community in the development of geothermal energy in the mountain region of Talang-Bukit Kili. Our study takes the form of a case study focusing on the actors involved in the movement. This study uses in-depth semi-structured interviews. The results of the study show that movements are formed by several elements, namely; Non-Government Organization (NGO), students, civil society, and academics. These elements then form a different movement model. The movement developed by students and civil society is grouped as a new social movement model.

The comparision of a basic and a dual-pressure ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle): Geothermal Power Plant Velika Ciglena case study

In the Republic of Croatia there is some medium temperature geothermal fields (between 100 and 180 °C) by means of which it is possible to produce electricity. However, only recently concrete initiatives for the construction of geothermal power plants have been started. In previous papers, the possible cycles for geothermal fields in the Republic of Croatia are proposed: ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) and Kalina cycle. Also for the most prospective geothermal fields, energy and exergy analysis for the proposed cycles are performed, on the basis of which the most suitable cycle is proposed. It is ORC which in all cases has better both the thermal efficiency (the First Law efficiency) and the exergy efficiency (the Second Law efficiency). With aim to further improving of geothermal energy utilization in this paper the replacement of a basic ORC with a dual-pressure ORC is analysed. A dual-pressure cycle reduces the thermodynamic losses incurred in the geothermal water-working fluid heat exchangers of the basic ORC, which arise through the heat transfer process across a large temperature difference. The dual-pressure cycle maintains a closer match between the geothermal water cooling curve and the working fluid heating/boiling curve and these losses can be reduced. Now, on the example of the most prospective geothermal field, Velika Ciglena (175 °C), energy and exergy analysis for the proposed the dual-pressure cycle are performed. As a conclusion, in case of Geothermal Power Plant Velika Ciglena, a dual-pressure ORC has slightly lower thermal efficiency (13.96% vs. 14.1%) but considerably higher both exergy efficiency (65% vs. 52%) and net power (6371 kW vs. 5270 kW).

Possibilities of electricity generation in the Republic of Croatia by means of geothermal energy

In the Republic of Croatia there are some medium temperature geothermal sources by means of which it is possible to produce electricity. However, only recently concrete initiatives for the construction of geothermal power plants have been started. Consequently, the paper provides proposals of the possible cycles for the Republic of Croatia. On the example of the most prospective geothermal source in the Republic of Croatia detailed analysis for the proposed energy conversion cycles is performed: for Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) and Kalina cycle. On the basis of analysis results both the most suitable cycle for selected and for other geothermal sources in the Republic of Croatia are proposed. It is ORC which in case of the most prospective geothermal source in the Republic of Croatia has better both the thermal efficiency (the First Law efficiency) and the exergetic efficiency (the Second Law efficiency): 14.1% vs. 10.6% and 52% vs. 44%. The ORC gives net power of 5270 kW with mass flow rate 80.13 kg/s, while the Kalina cycle gives net power of 3949 kW with mass flow rate 35.717 kg/s.
