Transparent Concrete: A Brief Review

Abstract: World is actively engaged in the creation of unique materials and technologies since the dawn of human civilization. Humans are different from other animals in that we want to live easier, more sophisticated lives. Concrete is nothing short of a miracle for human evolution in this era of constant advancement. One of those cutting-edge varieties of concrete is transparent concrete, which not only dispels the stereotype of concrete as a lifeless, colorless substance but also contributes to energy conservation, one of the main issues facing the modern world. Concrete that transmits light, sometimes referred to as translucent concrete. Due to incorporated light optical elements, the material has light-transmissive qualities. The concrete block allows light to pass through it from one end to the other. Therefore, in order to get maximal light penetration, fibers must travel through the entire object. Natural light in buildings is obstructed by the construction of skyscrapers and high-rise buildings. The use of artificial light has significantly increased as a result of this issue.

Seismic and Wind Resillence Study of a 15 Story High-Rise Building with Floating Columns in Seismic Zones II & V

The use of floating columns in the construction of high-rise buildings, specifically in the context of G+15 structures in metropolitan cities, as per Indian standards. The structural design of a building is crucial for its durability, strength, stability, and lifespan. Floating columns play a significant role in transferring loads from the floors to the beams, affecting the overall stability of the building.Several factors impact the structural design, including bending moments, shear forces, torsion, and deflection. Due to the growing population in metropolitan areas, there is a need for high-rise buildings that can accommodate both commercial and residential spaces on a single platform. Commercial and residential floors have different load requirements. Therefore, floating columns are specifically used for residential floors to address these varying load demands. The structural analysis considers seismic and wind forces as per Indian standards (IS 1893-2016 for seismic analysis and IS 875-2015 for wind analysis) for different seismic zones (Zone- Ⅱ, Ⅲ, Ⅳ, and Ⅴ). The materials used in the construction include concrete with a grade of M40 and steel with a grade of Fe550. These material grades are commonly used in construction for their respective strength properties. The floor height for residential floors is 3 meters, while commercial floors have a height of 4 meters. This distinction in floor height is considered in the structural design. The design of high-rise buildings, especially in seismic-prone regions, requires a thorough understanding of structural engineering principles and adherence to local building codes and standards to ensure the safety and stability of the structure. The use of floating columns can be a part of a structural design strategy to address varying load requirements in different parts of the building.Safety is paramount in the design and construction of high-rise buildings, particularly in areas susceptible to seismic activity and strong winds.

This research focuses on the assessment of quality management practices within the context of constructing high-rise buildings, with a particular emphasis on buildings designated as headquarters for banking and insurance companies in Addis Ababa. The objective of this study is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the various factors that contribute to the successful execution of complex construction projects in this domain. Employing a hybrid research approach that combines both qualitative and quantitative methods, the investigation explores a range of aspects related to quality assurance, monitoring, evaluation, and regulatory oversight. The study explores the impact of inadequate quality management on the overall quality, structural integrity, and safety of high-rise buildings. It also identifies barriers and challenges in implementing quality management practices, as well as performance indicators and metrics for assessing the effectiveness of quality control measures. Additionally, the research delves into monitoring construction activities for compliance with quality control measures and ensuring quality standards for materials used in high-rise construction. Furthermore, it discusses quality benchmarks, standards, and the monitoring and evaluation of quality assurance measures implementation within organizations, including policies and procedures specific to high-rise building projects. Through interviews with various stakeholders, this study aims to provide valuable insights into enhancing the quality management processes in high-rise construction projects, ultimately contributing to the advancement of building safety and integrity in urban environments. Building upon these insights, the research concludes by presenting a series of strategic recommendations designed to enhance quality management practices in high-rise building construction projects. These recommendations span multiple dimensions, including strengthening regulatory oversight, implementing integrated quality assurance policies, establishing comprehensive monitoring and evaluation frameworks, defining quality benchmarks and performance metrics, ensuring robust materials quality control.

Experimental Investigation into Strength Properties of Ribbed Mild Steel Reinforcing Bars (RMSRBs) Produced by Local Companies in Ghana

The construction of high-rise buildings has increased the production and demand of ribbed mild steel reinforcing bars (RMSRBs) in Ghana. This study aimed at investigating the strength properties of RMSRBs manufactured in Ghana from scrap metals. Three steel-producing companies were considered for this study. A total of 90 samples of 12, 16, and 20mm diameters with lengths of 500, 50, and 20mm were used for the study. The prepared specimens were subjected to tensile strength test, chemical composition analysis, micro-hardness test, and microstructure analysis. The results indicate that the average tensile strength of between 576.00 and 768.40N/mm2 were above the minimum tensile strength of 250N/mm2 recommended by ASTM E8/E8M-16a. The carbon equivalent values (CEVs) of between 0.287 and 0.333% obtained were almost within the range of 0.3 to 0.55% recommended by ASTM A706/A706M-09b. It was also identified that the average Vickers hardness values of between 255.76 and 295.38HV were acceptable. The microstructural images showed good distribution of the pearlite and ferrite of the core. One Way ANOVA results indicated that the differences in the tensile strength values for 12mm (p-value ˂0.000) and 16mm (p-value =0.001) were statistically significant, however, the 20mm (p-value =0.138) was not statistically significant. The study, therefore, concludes that the strength properties of the 12, 16, and 20mm diameters of the RMSRBs produced by the three different companies in Ghana meet the standard requirements, and are recommended for use by contractors for the production of reinforced concrete.

Understanding the correlates of construction safety of high-rise buildings: A Bayesian perspective

Safety in high-rise building construction is a critical concern, particularly in the densely populated urban areas of Vietnam. Understanding the complex interplay of factors influencing safety on construction sites is essential for reducing accidents and enhancing overall project outcomes. This study aims to identify and analyze key factors impacting safety in high-rise construction projects. Utilizing Bayesian Poisson Regression, the research investigates the relationship between various safety-related factors and the occurrence of non-fatal accidents. The study adopts a comprehensive approach, selecting potential safety factors from the existing literature and developing a rating system validated by site safety managers. Data were collected from 48 high-rise buildingprojects in Vietnam, constructed between 2019 and 2022. Bayesian Poisson Regression was employed to analyze the impact of 15 variables on safety outcomes, including management commitment, worker participation,training programs, emergency preparedness, and safety inspections. The findings underscore the multifacetednature of construction safety and the need for a holistic approach that involves strong safety training, engagedmanagement and workers, protective measures, and proactive safety audits. This research provides actionableinsights for practitioners and contributes to the academic discourse on construction safety, emphasizing theutility of Bayesian methods in unraveling complex safety dynamics in high-rise construction.

Investigation on the Nature of Safety Rule Violations in High-Rise Construction Projects

The construction sector has consistently demonstrated a greater risk of fatal and non-fatal occupational accidents than other economic sectors, particularly with respect to high-rise building construction projects. Despite searing progress in the regulatory domain, and progressive formulation of new safety agenda for the industry, the truth is safety incidences involving fatalities and injuries still perpetuate with varying degrees of intensity. This is further aggravated by the loss of vital project resources of materials, equipment, and labours, which is counter-productive, unsustainable, and occasionally polluting. What is abundantly clear is that human factor when dealing with safety intricacies and observation still plays a considerable role in determining key safety objective accomplishment. With that in mind, it was the aims of this study to delve deeper into this issue among practitioners at the forefront of the high-rise building construction works in Malaysia. Specifically, it investigates, analyses, and ranks the degree of severity of the safety rule violation repercussion, the frequency, and perpetrators. A questionnaire survey approach was devised and distributed to respondents from among the developers, consultants, contractors, and relevant authorities. The data collected were analysed using SPSS package by determining the average index, standard deviation, variance, and frequency analysis. The results have shown that the lack of fire protection was perceived to lead to the most severe repercussion, while the lack of risky, near-miss, accident reporting, and the lack of Logout or Tagout (LOTO) procedures during servicing and maintenance activities were the most frequent safety rule violations. In addition, the contractor party was the most regular offender of the safety regulations, understandably by virtue of numbers. In conclusion, these outcomes could facilitate safety authorities and professionals in devising pragmatic schemes that best utilize both the persuasive and punitive mitigation measures for better safety outcomes.

Increasing performance of chiller systems in high-rise buildings by load optimization

Recently, the construction of high-rise buildings has been increasing significantly along with economic growth. Therefore, electricity is also going up due to the energy demand of the building. The air conditioning system is the enormous energy consumption in high buildings. The green building concept has been introduced regarding the energy efficiency of a high-rise building. This study investigated the energy consumption in a high building (47 floors) using the load optimization method for the chiller system. The load optimization was conducted by configuring five chillers systems consisting of integral compressors, cooling towers, and pumps. This study obtained the decreasing energy consumption by the chiller's operation load sequencing based on 24-hour data optimization. Optimized chiller performance satisfied the green building standards. However, load optimization on high buildings is highly recommended as an effective way to achieve green building status. Further research is recommended for implementing such optimization at other facilities, such as industrial plants, hospitals, airports, and manufacturing plants.

Green Building Rating of High-Rise Buildings in Sri Lanka


 
 
 As a result of urbanization, constructions of high-rise buildings become a major component of urban development. Constructing high-rise buildings contributes to social, economic and environmental development as well. There are many stages of construction including planning, designing, procurement and implementation. There is a wide range of sustainability practices which can be implemented in each stage of construction. In leading Sri Lanka to Sustainable Development, the green building rating system was introduced by National Green Building Council of Sri Lanka in 2002. This rating system has 100 total points and minimum of 40 points is required for green building certification. The rating system has different components. Among them sustainable sites category includes 25% of total points in green building rating system. This research study highlights the significance of sustainable sites category in order to award the green certification in green building rating system. For this research five major high-rise building construction sites in Colombo were selected and existing site selection practices of each site were investigated. Each site was visited and in-depth discussions were carried out with the planning engineer and other people in the construction site. The structured questionnaire was filled and scores were given accordingly where they have met the sustainable sites criteria. Two sites out of five could not earn single point as they did not fulfill the prerequisites of the site section category. The rest of the sites (three) earned 20, 19, and 18 respectively out of 25 points. In this study, lack of awareness in sustainable site selection practices has dropped the chances of being eligible for the green building certification. Since the minimum points required for green building certification is 40, buildings which are under planning or pre-construction stage have higher chances of obtaining silver, gold and platinum awards for green building certification. Therefore, sustainable sites category of the green building rating system contributes significantly to increase the score and therefore it is highly important in green certification & sustainable construction.

Research and propose suitable foundation solutions for some types of ground structures in Hai Duong city area

According to the urban planning up to 2030, Hai Duong City is expanding in both area and scale. In particular, the high-rise building density is planned to increase. However, the soils at Hai Duong city are unfavorable for high-rise building construction because the high-bearing capacity soils are distributed at a great depth, with soft soils above. Therefore, the pile foundation is a feasible solution for high buildings. With the pile foundation, the selection of the load-bearing soil layer, the effective depth of pile tip placement, pile diameter, the number of piles as well as the estimated pile-bearing capacity in accordance with the ground structure are of decisive importance to the effectiveness of the solution. The article uses the Pile and Pile Group modules in the Geo5 Software Suite combined with experimental research results to determine the load-bearing capacity of piles according to different options in three types of ground structures in Hai Duong City area. On that basis, evaluate the reasonableness of pile foundation options for buildings of different sizes based on technical and economic factors (number of piles, settlement, and stability). The results indicated that the effective depths of pile tip are varied from 33 m to 35 m for ground structure types I and II, and are greater than 40 m for ground structure type III. Reasonable pile foundation solutions for each group of buildings and ground structure type are also proposed.

On the Key Points of Technical Management in High rise Building Engineering

For the technical management of high-rise building construction projects, it involves a systematic approach throughout the entire construction process. The pre construction stage requires careful planning, from site selection to market analysis, while engineering design ensures structural integrity and functional efficiency. Efficient project organization, procurement, and on-site management, as well as strict quality control, are crucial during the construction phase. The focus of the post construction phase is debugging, seamless handover, and continuous facility operation and maintenance. Overall, by adopting comprehensive technical management, the safe and efficient construction of high-rise buildings has been ensured, meeting functional and aesthetic requirements while considering environmental protection.

Multi-Stage and Multi-Parameter Influence Analysis of Deep Foundation Pit Excavation on Surrounding Environment

As urbanization accelerates, deep excavation projects have become increasingly vital in the construction of high-rise buildings and underground facilities. However, the potential risks to the surrounding environment and the inherent complexities involved necessitate thorough research to ensure the safety of those engineering projects with deep foundation pit excavation and to minimize their impact on adjacent structures. This study introduces a multi-stage and multi-parameter numerical simulation method to scrutinize the construction process of deep foundation pits. This approach not only investigates the influence of excavation activities on nearby buildings and roads but also enhances the fidelity of simulation models by establishing a three-dimensional finite element model integrated with on-site investigated geological information. Therefore, the proposed method can provide a more holistic and accurate analysis of the overall impacts of the pit excavation process. To examine the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method, this study adopts the multi-stage and multi-parameter influence analysis approach for a real practical engineering case to explore the impact of excavation on the foundation pit support structure, nearby buildings, and surrounding roads. The foundation pit support’s maximum displacement was 8.64 mm, well under the 25 mm standard limit. Anchor rod forces were about 10% below the standard limit. Building and road settlements were also minimal, at 10.33 mm and 16.44 mm, respectively, far below their respective limits of 200 mm and 300 mm. This study not only validates the feasibility of design and construction stability of deep foundation pits but also contributes theoretical and practical insights, serving as a valuable reference for future engineering projects of a similar scope.

Dynamic reliability analysis of Aerial Building Machine under extreme wind loads using improved QBDC-based active learning

Aerial building machine (ABM) is a new comprehensive construction equipment used for the construction of high-rise buildings, and the research of its wind-induced response is essential for structural safety. However, the traditional reliability estimation for complex structures is generally computationally expensive. This study proposes a novel and time-saving active learning (AL) approach to predict the structural time-variant response and calculate the reliability under extreme wind loads based on improved Query-by-Dropout-Committee (QBDC), Deep Learning (DL) and Probability Density Evolution Method (PDEM). To establish an effective training set, the load sample pool from the turbulent wind field is constructed by the number theory method (NTM). Then a DL surrogate model, aimed to simulate the excitation-response relationship of the structure, is well-trained from data calculated by the Finite Element Method (FEM) under the workflow of the improved QBDC-based AL approach. Lastly, the structural responses predicted by the surrogate model are used to solve the Generalized Density Evolution Equation (GDEE) to obtain the Probability Density Function (PDF) of the structural response. The dynamic reliability can be gained using absorbing boundary condition. To demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach, an ABM in China is taken as a case study. It is found that (1) The external trusses of the platform are weak positions under the horizontal wind loads. It is suggested to append the longitudinal (windward direction) trusses to reduce the local stress and deformation. (2) Under turbulent wind loads with the average speed of 40 m/s, the maximum structural response of the ABM will exceed the threshold value and the reliability is 0.932. (3) The reliability calculation error derived by the proposed approach and the traditional PDEM is within 0.5 % in this study, while the computational efficiency of the AL approach is 77.08 % higher than that of the traditional PDEM. The novelty lies in the proposed active learning approach that can easily obtain the stochastic response and dynamic reliability of the ABM, where the analysis workflow not only has a low computational cost but also maintains a high calculation accuracy.

Assessment of circularity potential in façades of high-rise buildings in Belgrade

A growing trend in the construction of high-rise buildings is currently prevalent in Belgrade, where more high-rise buildings have been built in the last decade than in the previous 50 years. However, these buildings have a significant negative impact on the environment, as their sophisticated construction technologies demand substantial resources and energy consumption. The aim of this research is to assess the possibility of reducing the resource consumption of these buildings, focusing on the circularity potential of their fa?ades. The research is conducted on typical fa?ades of high-rise buildings in Belgrade. The applied methodology for assessing the circular potential of fa?ades relies on numerical calculations of material circularity indicators and CO2 emissions. Research findings draw conclusions about the circular potential at the beginning and end of the fa?ade's lifecycle, covering the production, dismantling and disposal phases of integrated components. The study highlights differences in resource consumption based on the architectural characteristics of the examined fa?ades and provides insights for their improvement through the implementation of materials with higher circularity potential and optimized impacts on the environment.

Abstract The construction of high-rise buildings has emerged as a constructive trend worldwide, and excessive vibration problems due to wind actions are becoming increasingly frequent. The Brazilian design standard NBR 6123 recommends that the transfer of wind actions used for structural analysis be carried out based on the pressure coefficients along the building facades for static analyses and considers their non-deterministic dynamic behaviour through a stochastic modelling method of the wind velocity field. To present an alternative approach to this methodology, this study aims to investigate the non-deterministic dynamic structural response of a real reinforced concrete building, considering the soil-structure interaction effect, using the pressure coefficients obtained through different methodologies such as numerical simulations using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), international databases, and the recommendations of the Brazilian standard NBR 6123.

Performance-based Seismic Engineering is the modem approach to Earthquake Resistant Design to control lateral deflection and inter-story drifts. It is a significant challenge to overcome in the execution of high-rise buildings. Since structures are subjected to lateral loads, the Utilization of dissipation devices such as the bracing, shear wall, and dampers are a possible method to enhance the structural performance of the high-rise building under load cases. These cases are varying to static and dynamic ones as Response Spectrum. Properly designed and detailed structures with dissipation devices have exhibited excellent performance during a severe earthquake. Lateral forces due to will be resisted in its plane. In continuation studies of reinforced concrete structure compared to the absorbing devices, Three essential reinforced concrete buildings were taken for analysis G+ 30 floors to cover the broader spectrum of high-rise building construction. Software ETABS carried out seismic analysis through Response Spectrum Analysis. The result highlights how structural damper systems perform much better than other systems with accuracy and exactness through the parameters of Displacement, Drift, Base shear, and Stiffness. Damper structures are more suitable for high-rise buildings and earthquake zones due to this study's results; maximum height of systems could be possible, which must be economically less expensive than steel structure of the same height.

Implementation of the HIRADC Method in Risk Analysis of Diaphragm Wall Work Projects

The decreasing land area in big cities makes construction progress develop not only vertically upwards, but also downwards. This is done to optimize the land use. One of the things is the construction of a basement as a parking lot, storage space, and other functions to be neatly organized and safe. There are numerous employment risks in basement work that can result in building failures that hinder other construction activity. This research was conducted at a company that focuses on the business of guitar manufacturing, retaining walls, and soil improvement in three high-rise building construction projects that are currently building, and experiencing difficulties in identifying the main risks in diaphragm wall work. The soil conditions are different at each project site, which is not the same as the superstructure work. It is more typical and the quite large project value reaching more than 100 billion than can be classified as a major construction project. The risks that will be encountered in its implementation will also be large. The steps involved in the research were risk identification, risk qualitative analysis, and extreme risk response planning by experts. There were sixty-four (64) identified risks relevant to the project construction phase, classified into eleven categories. The risk was then simulated to obtain high risk and control risk plans that would be carried out when the high risk occurs. There are four high risks, namely the damaged or non-compliant construction materials, inaccurate specifications, delays in the execution of constructor work, and slope failure during excavation.
