Modeling Roman Pavements Using Heritage-BIM: A Case Study in Pompeii

The study of ancient stone pavements represents the necessary premise for planning and execution of treatments that considers the necessity of conservation. The approach to the integrated management of information derived through H-BIM has been applied to Via del Vesuvio, one of the main roads in the archaeological site of Pompeii in Naples, Italy. The digital terrain model was carried out using Autodesk Infraworks software. Then, using Autodesk Civil 3D and Revit software, the road was digitalized creating the 3D model that included road geometric information resulting from an on-site survey, material characteristics for each pavement layer, construction period and related construction cost information. Finally, based on the existing research works available in the literature review, using Autodesk Naviswork software, it was possible to implement in the 3D model the BIM fourth dimension, namely, the time related to the construction of Via Del Vesuvio in different eras. The interoperability between the adopted BIM authoring software was exploited. The adopted procedure can be considered a benchmark case in the technical literature of H-BIM for stone pavements, highlighting the advantages in the design field.

The Modeling of Buildings Cost Assessment Expert System with Differences

It’s difficult to estimate the costs of hybrid constructions with great differentiations. This paper proposes a hybrid construction costs optimization model by reasonably selecting the feature attributes during costs estimation. SVR prediction model is established and it’s trained to shape the analog hybrid construction cost information estimation model. The experimental results show that the proposed model can accurately predicate the hybrid construction costs with higher efficiency.

A generic feature-driven activity-based cost estimation process

Understanding how the building design influences construction costs is a challenging task for estimators. Estimators must recognize the design conditions that affect construction costs and customize the cost estimate accordingly. Estimators have different preferences for how and when to adjust a project's activities, resources, and resource productivity rates that form the basis of a cost estimate. Current tools and methodologies lack ways to help estimators customize construction cost information according to their preferences and the particular features in a given design. This paper describes the process we formalized to customize a project's activities, resources, and resource productivity rates based on a project-independent representation of estimators' rationale and a project-specific feature-based product model. The formal process creates an integrated model that explicitly relates features, activities, resources, costs and the estimator's rationale. Our tests show that this process enables a software prototype to generate and maintain cost estimates quickly, consistently, and accurately for feature-based product models.

Construction cost information management in Nigeria

Quantity surveyors are the hub of construction cost control in Nigeria. A total of 29 quantity surveying firms were surveyed using a structured questionnaire, augmented with formal interviews, with a vieW to determine the sources of, and how, cost information are managed in the country. An analysis of contractors' tenders is the cheapest, fastest and most frequently used source of cost data. More reliable sources, such as market surveys and the technical press, are referred to less often. Greatest constraints identified against adequate management of construction cost information are with respect to insufficient design information, unavailability of relevant database and fluctuating construction input prices.
