Potential Of Biochar And Humic Substances For Phytoremediation Of Trace Metals In Oil Sands Process Affected Water.

Oil sands process affected water (OSPW) is produced during bitumen extraction and typically contains high concentrations of trace metals. Constructed wetlands have emerged as a cost effective and green technology for the treatment of metals in wastewaters. Whether the addition of amendments to constructed wetlands can improve metal removal efficiency is unknown. We investigated the synergistic effects of carbon based amendments and wetland plant species in removal of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, nickel, and selenium from OSPW. Three native wetland species (Carex aquatilis, Juncus balticus, Scirpus validus) and two amendments (canola straw biochar, nano humus) were investigated in constructed wetland mesocosms over 60 days. Amendment effect on metal removal efficiency was not significant, while plant species effect was. Phytoremediation resulted in removal efficiencies of 78.61 to 96.31 % for arsenic, cadmium, and cobalt. Carex aquatilis had the highest removal efficiencies for all metals. Amendments alone performed well in removing some metals and were comparable to phytoremediation for cadmium, cobalt, copper, and nickel. Metals were primarily distributed in roots with negligible translocation to shoots. Our work provides insights into the role of plants and amendments during metal remediation and their complex interactions in constructed treatment wetlands.

Nutrients, surfactants, and aeration in constructed wetlands affect bacterial persistence and metabolic activity during the remediation of crude oil-contaminated water

The use of constructed wetlands (CWs) is one of the best options to treat wastewater. In CWs, microorganisms play a major role in the degradation of organic pollutants but the concentration of nutrients, surfactant, and aeration (NSA) in oil-contaminated water is one of the factors that affect the persistence and metabolic functioning of hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms. In the present investigation, the influence of the addition of NSA on the persistence of the augmented bacteria, copy of (alkane hydroxylase gene) alkB gene, and its expression level in the water, soil, and plants of CWs were evaluated. The CWs mesocosms were developed by the vegetation of Typha latifolia and Cyperus laevigatus and inoculated with the bacterial consortium (Pseudomonas putida TYRI39, Acinetobacter junii TYRH47, Acinetobacter sp. CYRH17, Pseudomonas sp. CYSI27, and Pseudomonas sp. TYRH42). The mesocosms were provided with nutrients (20 mg l− 1 N, 2.6 mg l− 1 P, and 16.4 mg l− 1 K) in liquid form, surfactant Tween-20 (0.2%, v/v) in liquid form, and aeration (≥ 7.0 ± 1 mg l− 1 DO) using aeration pump. The addition of NSA in CWs enhanced the persistence and metabolic functioning of the inoculated bacteria in the water, rhizospheric soil, and plants. The maximum hydrocarbon removal (97%) was observed in the water treated by CWs having C. laevigatus, bacteria, and NSA, and it is correlated with the copy numbers of alkB and its expression level. The application of NSA in CWs not only improved bacterial persistence and catabolic gene expression but also increased plant development and hydrocarbon removal.

Fungal removal of cyanotoxins in constructed wetlands: The forgotten degraders

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms have increased globally, releasing hazardous cyanotoxins that threaten the safety of water resources. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a nature-based and low-cost solution to purify and remove cyanotoxins from water. However, bio-mechanistic understanding of the biotransformation processes expected to drive cyanotoxin removal in such systems is poor, and primarily focused on bacteria. Thus, the present study aimed at exploring the fungal contribution to microcystin-LR and cylindrospermopsin biodegradation in CWs. Based on CW mesocosms, two experimental approaches were taken: a) amplicon sequencing studies were conducted to investigate the involvement of the fungal community; and b) CW fungal isolates were tested for their microcystin-LR and cylindrospermopsin degradation capabilities. The data uncovered effects of seasonality (spring or summer), cyanotoxin exposure, vegetation (unplanted, Juncus effusus or Phragmites australis) and substratum (sand or gravel) on the fungal community structure. Additionally, the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus and the endophyte Myrmecridium showed positive correlations with cyanotoxin removal. Fungal isolates revealed microcystin-LR-removal potentials of approximately 25 % in in vitro biodegradation experiments, while the extracellular chemical fingerprint of the cultures suggested a potential intracellular metabolization. The results from this study may help us understand the fungal contribution to cyanotoxin removal, as well as their ecology in CWs.

Constructed wetland mesocosms improve the biodegradation of microcystin-LR and cylindrospermopsin by indigenous bacterial consortia

Cyanobacterial blooms releasing harmful cyanotoxins, such as microcystin (MC) and cylindrospermopsin (CYN), are prominent threats to human and animal health. Constructed wetlands (CW) may be a nature-based solution for bioremediation of lake surface water containing cyanotoxins, due to its low-cost requirement of infrastructure and environmentally friendly operation. There is recent evidence that microcystin-LR (MC-LR) can efficiently be removed in CW microcosms where CYN degradation in CW is unknown. Likewise, the mechanistic background regarding cyanotoxins transformation in CW is not yet elucidated. In the present study, the objective was to compare MC-LR and CYN degradation efficiencies by two similar microbial communities obtained from CW mesocosms, by two different experiments setup: 1) in vitro batch experiment in serum bottles with an introduced CW community, and 2) degradation in CW mesocosms. In experiment 1) MC-LR and CYN were spiked at 100 µg L−1 and in experiment 2) 200 µg L−1 were spiked. Results showed that MC-LR was degraded to ≤1 µg L−1 within seven days in both experiments. However, with a markedly higher degradation rate constant in the CW mesocosms (0.18 day−1 and 0.75 day−1, respectively). No CYN removal was detected in the in vitro incubations, whereas around 50 % of the spiked CYN was removed in the CW mesocosms. The microbial community responded markedly to the cyanotoxin treatment, with the most prominent increase of bacteria affiliated with Methylophilaceae (order: Methylophilales, phylum: Proteobacteria). The results strongly indicate that CWs can develop an active microbial community capable of efficient removal of MC-LR and CYN. However, the CW operational conditions need to be optimized to achieve a full CYN degradation. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to report the ability of CW mesocosms to degrade CYN.

Evaluating the attenuation of naphthenic acids in constructed wetland mesocosms planted with Carex aquatilis

Surface oil sands mining and extraction in northern Alberta’s Athabasca oil sands region produce large volumes of oil sands process–affected water (OSPW). OSPW is a complex mixture containing major contaminant classes including trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs). Naphthenic acids (NAs) are the primary organic toxicants in OSPW, and reducing their concentrations is a priority for oil sands companies. Previous evidence has shown that constructed wetland treatment systems (CWTSs) are capable of reducing the concentration of NAs and the toxicity of OSPW through bioremediation. In this study, we constructed greenhouse mesocosms with OSPW or lab process water (LPW) (i.e., water designed to mimic OSPW minus the NAFC content) with three treatments: (1) OSPW planted with Carex aquatilis; (2) OSPW, no plants; and (3) LPW, no plants. The OSPW–C. aquatilis treatment saw a significant reduction in NAFC concentrations in comparison to OSPW, no plant treatments, but both changed the distribution of the NAFCs in similar ways. Upon completion of the study, treatments with OSPW saw fewer high-molecular-weight NAs and an increase in the abundance of O3- and O4-containing formulae. Results from this study provide invaluable information on how constructed wetlands can be used in future remediation of OSPW in a way that previous studies were unable to achieve due to uncontrollable environmental factors in field experiments and the active, high-energy processes used in CWTSs pilot studies.

Interactive effects of aquatic nitrogen and plant biomass on nitrous oxide emission from constructed wetlands

Understanding of mechanisms in nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from constructed wetland (CW) is particularly important for the establishment of related strategies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) production during its wastewater treatment. However, plant biomass accumulation, microbial communities and nitrogen transformation genes distribution and their effects on N2O emission from CW as affected by different nitrogen forms in aquatic environment have not been reported. This study investigated the interactive effects of aquatic nitrogen and plant biomass on N2O emission from subsurface CW with NH4+-N (CW-A) or NO3−-N (CW–B) wastewater. The experimental results show that NH4+-N and NO3−-N removal efficiencies from CW mesocosms were 49.4% and 87.6%, which indirectly lead to N2O emission fluxes of CW-A and CW-B maintained at 213 ± 67 and 462 ± 71 μg-N/(m2·h), respectively. Correlation analysis of nitrogen conversion dynamic indicated that NO2−-N accumulation closely related to N2O emission from CW. Aquatic NH4+-N could up-regulate plant biomass accumulation by intensifying citric acid cycle, glycine-serine-threonine metabolism etc., resulting in more nitrogen uptake and lower N2O emission/total nitrogen (TN) removal ratio of CW-A compared to CW-B. Although the abundance of denitrifying bacteria and N2O reductase nosZ in CW-B were significantly higher than that of CW-A, after fed with mixed NH4+-N and NO3−-N influent, N2O fluxes and N2O emission/TN removal ratio in CW-A were extremely close to that of CW-B, suggesting that nitrogen form rather than nitrogen transformation microbial communities and N2O reductase nosZ determines N2O emission from CW. Hence, the selection of nitrate-loving plants will play an important role in inhibiting N2O emission from CW.

Enhanced degradation of hydrocarbons in constructed wetlands aided with nutrients, surfactant, and aeration

The use of constructed wetlands (CWs) is a promising approach for the remediation of hydrocarbon-polluted wastewater. The amendments of CWs with nutrients, surfactants, and aeration enhances the removal of pollutants from wastewater. The objective of the present study was to explore the effect of external stimulants, i.e., nutrients, surfactant, and aeration on hydrocarbons degradation potential of CWs. The CWs mesocosms were developed by the vegetation of Phragmites australis and amendments with nutrients (20 mg l−1 N, 2.6 mg l−1 P, and 16.4 mg l−1 K), surfactant Tween 20 (0.2%, v/v), and aeration (7 mg l−1) for the remediation of diesel-spiked water (2%, w/v). The comparative analysis showed that the addition of nutrients, surfactant, and aeration individually enhanced total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) reduction, and maximum TPHs reduction (88.4%) was achieved after 60 days in the mesocosms amended with the combination of nutrients, surfactant, and aeration. Among different individual treatments, the aeration (alone) also played a pivotal role in TPHs reduction (61%). The least (12%) reduction in TPHs was achieved in the mesocosms supplied with surfactant only. This study revealed that the combined application of nutrients, surfactant, and aeration in CWs enhanced its hydrocarbons degradation performance.

Impact of future climate scenarios on peatland and constructed wetland water quality: A mesocosm experiment within climate chambers

Water purification is one of the most essential services provided by wetlands. A lot of concerns regarding wetlands subjected to climate change relate to their susceptibility to hydrological change and the increase in temperature as a result of global warming. A warmer condition may accelerate the rate of decomposition and release of nutrients, which can be exported downstream and cause serious ecological challenges; e.g., eutrophication and acidification. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of climate change on water quality in peatland and constructed wetland ecosystems subject to water level management. For this purpose, the authors simulated the current climate scenario base on the database from Malmö station (Scania, Sweden) for 2016 and 2017 as well as the future climate scenarios for the last 30 years of the century based on the Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) and different regional climate models (RCM) for a region wider than Scania County. For future climate change, the authors simulated low (RCP 2.6), moderate (RCP 4.5) and extreme (RCP 8.5) climate scenarios. All simulations were conducted within climate chambers for experimental peatland and constructed wetland mesocosms. Our results demonstrate that the effect of climate scenario is significantly different for peatlands and constructed wetlands (interactive effect) for the combined chemical variables. The warmest climate scenario RCP 8.5 is linked to a higher water purification function for constructed wetlands, but to a lower water purification function and a subsequent deterioration of peatland water qualities, even if subjected to water level management. The explanation for the different response of constructed wetlands and peatlands to climate change could be due to the fact that the substrate in the constructed wetland mesocosms and peatlands was different in terms of the organic matter quality and quantity. The utilization of nutrients by the plants and microbial community readily exceed the mineralization under a limited nutrient content (as we had in constructed wetland) when the temperature rises. However, concerning the extreme scenario RCP 8.5, the peatlands have shown a tendency to have reverse processes.

Biofilms attached to Myriophyllum spicatum play a dominant role in nitrogen removal in constructed wetland mesocosms with submersed macrophytes: Evidence from 15N tracking, nitrogen budgets and metagenomics analyses

The mechanisms behind nitrogen removal by the submersed macrophyte-biofilm complex in wetlands remain to be fully elucidated. This study investigated the role of Myriophyllum spicatum and the biofilm on their leaves in nitrogen removal in mesocosm experiments. 15N tracking showed that 61.9% and 30% of the 15N, respectively, was removed from the system and assimilated by the macrophyte-biofilm complex after loading with 5.4 mg L−115N labelled NH4+ for 17 days. Nitrogen budget results showed that about 0.2%, 0.2% and 3.6% of the nitrogen were emitted as water-, HCl- and NaOH-soluble nitrogen-gas species, respectively. Bacteria (76.7–91.8%) were the predominant domain in all samples, followed by eukaryotes (8.0–23.0%), archaea and viruses. Network analyses showed that there were positive- and negative-correlative relationships among nitrogen-cycling genes and nitrifiers and denitrifiers. Our data highlight the important role of biofilm on submersed macrophytes for nitrogen removal.

Pollutant removal from landfill leachate employing two-stage constructed wetland mesocosms: co-treatment with municipal sewage.

Constructed wetlands are low-cost, natural technologies that are often employed for the treatment of different types of wastewater. In this study, landfill leachate and municipal wastewater were co-treated by the three parallel two-stage Phragmites- or Vetiver-based constructed wetland mesocosms. Two-stage wetland mesocosms included vertical flow (VF) units as the first stage, followed by horizontal flow (HF)/surface flow (SF)/floating treatment (FT) units. VF and HF wetland mesocosms were filled with gravel, steel slag, concrete block, and intermittent carbon-saturated ceramic filters as substrates. Mean input nitrogen, organics, and phosphorus load across first stages were 75gN/m2day, 283gCOD/m2day, 88gBOD/m2day, and 10gP/m2day, respectively. N and P accumulation rate was not substantial (< 10%) with respect to total removal in most wetland mesocosms. Gravel-based VF wetland mesocosm achieved better NH4-N and BOD removal (55-59%) during landfill leachate treatment phase, when compared with co-treatment periods (12-52%). Slag-concrete- and ceramic filter-based VF wetland mesocosms maintained stable NH4-N and BOD removals; the former wetland mesocosm was the most efficient VF unit (than other two wetland mesocosms) due to media characteristics. Media-based adsorption accelerated P removal (93%) in slag-concrete-based VF wetland mesocosm. Carbon scarcity limited denitrification in all VF wetland mesocosms; removal of TN was < 32%. Second stage wetland mesocosms achieved higher nitrogen (85-92%), organics (66-90%), and phosphorus (97-100%) removals regardless of operational variations; low input load, long retention time, media, and rhizosphere enhanced removal performances, particularly in HF and FT wetland mesocosms. In general, this study demonstrates potential application of two-stage wetland mesocosms for landfill leachate treatment or co-treatment with municipal sewage.

Performance of Cyperus papyrus in constructed wetland mesocosms under different levels of salinity

Constructed wetlands (CWs) are consolidated technologies used for removing organic matter (OM) and nutrients (nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P)) from wastewater. Recently, these systems have been implemented for treating wastewater under saline conditions. In this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of wastewater with different levels of salinity, expressed as electrical conductivity (EC), on the removal efficiencies of OM and on the growth of vegetation planted in CW mesocosms. For this, five horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands (HSSFs) planted with Cyperus papyrus were operated under different salinity levels: 1 (CW-C), 2.5 (CW-2.5), 5 (CW-5), 7.5 (CW-7.5) and 10 mS/cm (CW-10) using CW-C as a control system. To analyze the effects of different salinity levels, the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and biological oxygen demand (BOD5) were evaluated. Moreover, the growth characteristics of Cyperus papyrus were compared in the different CWs through the determination of chlorophyll concentration and nutrient contents in different plant tissues. The results of this study showed that the removal efficiencies of OM were above 50%. Regarding the effect of salinity on the removal of contaminants, the COD and BOD5 removals decreased 18% and 31%, respectively, from CW-C to CW-10 (p < .05). The sodium (Na+) concentration in Cyperus papyrus increased 82% when the salinity increased from 1 (CW-C) to 10 mS/cm (CW-10). In contrast, the chlorophyll concentration decreased 17% with increasing salinity (from 1 to 10 mS/cm). Finally, the vegetation presented mechanisms of salt tolerance, mainly Na+ accumulation in plant tissues. Despite these results, the technology of CWs could be a feasible alternative for the treatment of saline wastewater improving the plant selection.

Hydrilla verticillata-Sulfur-Based Heterotrophic and Autotrophic Denitrification Process for Nitrate-Rich Agricultural Runoff Treatment.

Hydrilla verticillata–sulfur-based heterotrophic and autotrophic denitrification (HSHAD) process was developed in free water surface constructed wetland mesocosms for the treatment of nitrate-rich agricultural runoff with low chemical oxygen demand/total nitrogen (C/N) ratio, whose feasibility and mechanism were extensively studied and compared with those of H. verticillata heterotrophic denitrification (HHD) mesocosms through a 273-day operation. The results showed that the heterotrophic and autotrophic denitrification can be combined successfully in HSHAD mesocosms, and achieve satisfactory nitrate removal performance. The average NO3−-N removal efficiency and denitrification rate of HSHAD were 94.4% and 1.3 g NO3−-N m−3·d−1 in steady phase II (7–118 d). Most nitrate was reduced by heterotrophic denitrification with sufficient organic carbon in phase I (0–6 d) and II, i.e., the C/N ratio exceeded 4.0, and no significant difference of nitrate removal capacity was observed between HSHAD and HHD mesocosms. During phase III (119–273 d), sulfur autotrophic denitrification gradually dominated the HSHAD process with the C/N ratio less than 4.0, and HSHAD mesocosms obtained higher NO3−-N removal efficiency and denitrification rate (79.1% and 1.1 g NO3−-N m−3·d−1) than HHD mesocosms (65.3% and 1.0 g NO3−-N m−3·d−1). As a whole, HSHAD mesocosms removed 58.8 mg NO3−-N more than HHD mesocosms. pH fluctuated between 6.9–9.0 without any pH buffer. In general, HSHAD mesocosms were more stable and efficient than HHD mesocosms for NO3−-N removal from agricultural runoff during long-term operation. The denitrificans containing narG (1.67 × 108 ± 1.28 × 107 copies g−1 mixture-soil−1), nirS (8.25 × 107 ± 8.95 × 106 copies g−1 mixture-soil−1), and nosZ (1.56 × 106 ± 1.60 × 105 copies g−1 mixture-soil−1) of litter bags and bottoms in HSHAD were higher than those in HHD, which indicated that the combined heterotrophic and autotrophic denitrification can increase the abundance of denitrificans containing narG, nirS, and nosZ, thus leading to better denitrification performance.

Treatment performance and microbial response to dibutyl phthalate contaminated wastewater in vertical flow constructed wetland mesocosms.

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs), especially dibutyl phthalate (DBP) pollution in the environment, have attracted worldwide attention. Four Phragmites australis-based, mesocosm-scale vertical flow constructed wetlands (VFCWs) with different hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) were operated for one year to study the removal efficiency and mechanisms of DBP in the reclaimed water. The average removal efficiencies for DBP were 93.77±3.27%, 94.9±2.60% and 97.0±3.00% in the VFCWs under HLRs of 0.33, 0.22 and 0.11m/d, respectively. DBP can be accumulated and degraded by wetland plants and its concentration in the roots (0.256-8.45mg/kg) were higher than in the leaves (0.243-0.482mg/kg). The concentrations of primary and secondary metabolites mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBP) and phthalic acid (PA) were 0.142-2.35mg/kg and 0.113-0.545mg/kg respectively in the plant tissues. The concentrations of DBP were 38.2-271μg/kg in the substrates. Mass balance for DBP indicates that the estimated plant uptake and substrate adsorption of total DBP is negligible. This suggests that biodegradation and other process are the primary pathways for DBP removal in VFCWs. The results of 16S rDNA and ITS rDNA high-throughput sequencing indicated that both bacterial and fungal community diversity decreased with the exposure of DBP. Janthinobacterium, Flavobacterium and Curvularia genera may be the main participants in the biodegradation of DBP in the CWs.

Greenhouse gas emissions and wastewater treatment performance by three plant species in subsurface flow constructed wetland mesocosms

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from constructed wetlands (CWs) have raised environmental concern and thus offset their environmental and ecological benefits. This study evaluated the influence of plant species, i.e., Canna indica (C. indica), Cyperus alternifolius (C. alternifolius), Phragmites australis (P. australis) and unplanted control, on GHG emissions, pollutant removal and associated microbial abundance in subsurface flow constructed wetland (SSFCW) mesocosms. C. indica outperformed the other tested plant species in pollutant removal, and the presence of plants irrespective of species enhanced the removal efficiencies of nitrogen, phosphorus and organics in SSFCW mesocosms compared to unplanted control. The greatest carbon dioxide (CO2) flux (582.01 ± 89.25 mg/m2/h), methane (CH4) flux (21.88 ± 2.51 μg/m2/h) and nitrous oxide (N2O) flux (37.27 ± 15.82 μg/m2/h) were observed in mesocosms planted with C. indica, P. australis and C.alternifolius, respectively. Unexpectedly, the mcrA and pmoA genes were not detected in any mesocosms. For denitrifiers, the N2O fluxes showed a significantly (p < 0.05) positive correlation with nirS and nirK genes abundance. The abundance of nosZ gene (ranged from 0.18 × 104 to 0.75 × 104 copies/mg gravel) and nosZ/(nirS + nirK) (ranged from 1.29 × 10−4 to 2.12 × 10−4 copies/mg gravel) in this study was lower than that in most reported studies. Regarding the global warming potential (GWP), the lowest value was observed in mesocosms planted with C. indica. In conclusion, C. indica is selected as the optimal plant species in this study due to its lower GWP and excellent pollutant removal performance.

Impact of Ornamental Vegetation Type and Different Substrate Layers on Pollutant Removal in Constructed Wetland Mesocosms Treating Rural Community Wastewater

Improving water quality is a relevant environmental aspect, and using constructed wetlands (CWs) is a sustainable option for this; both porous material filled cells and plants that collectively remove contaminants must be readily available and inexpensive. This study evaluated CWs and their functionality by comparing two ornamental plants (Spathiphyllum wallisii and Hedychium coronarium) planted in experimental mesocosm units filled with layers of porous river rock, tepezil, and soil, or in mesocosms with layers of porous river rock, and tepezil, without the presence of soil. The findings during the experiments (180 days), showed that the removal of pollutants (chemical oxygen demand (COD), total solids suspended (TSS), nitrogen as ammonium (N-NH4), as nitrate (N-NO3), and phosphate (P-PO4) was 20–50% higher in mesocosms with vegetation that in the absence of this, and those mesocosms with the soil layer between 33–45% favored removal of P-PO4. Differences regarding of vegetation removal were only observed for N-NH4, being 25–45% higher in CWs with H. coronarium, compared with S. wallisii. Both species are suitable for using in CWs, for its functionality as phytoremediation, and aesthetic advantages could generate interest for wastewater treatment in rural communities, parks, schools or in domiciliary levels like floral flower boxes in the backyard. The study also revealed that a soil layer in CWs is necessary to increase the removal of P-PO4, an ion hardly eliminated in water treatment.

Impact of substrate type, depth and retention time on organic matter removal in vertical subsurface flow constructed wetland mesocosms for treating slaughterhouse wastewater

Population growth and the associated demand for meat products is creating an increasing concern on water over slaughterhouse associated pollution of aquatic environments in Sub-Saharan Africa. In Kenya, increasing volumes of strong slaughterhouse wastewater being discharged either untreated or partially treated has necessitated ardent research into sustainable technologies. Vertical sub-surface flow constructed wetlands offer a promising solution. A study investigating the effect of depth, time and substrate variation on organic matter removal from slaughterhouse wastewater was conducted using vertical sub-surface flow constructed wetlands. Experimental out-door mesocosms designed as cylindrical metal tanks of variable depth and substrate were set up at Egerton University, Kenya. Results showed that organic matter removal was highest at 5 day retention time, with removals of about 50%, 55% and 82% for BOD5, COD and TSS respectively. Deeper (0.8 m depth) mesocosms were noted to have significant differences in treatment for TSS and NH4–N compared to shallow (0.65 m) mesocosms. Sand substrate was observed to perform better in BOD5 and TSS reduction compared to quarry dust and gravel. Increase in substrate size was observed to increase removal efficiency of NH4–N at longer retention time. However, effluent concentration of NH4–N fluctuated with removal efficiency averaging at 26.5%. The study demonstrated that vertical sub-surface flow constructed wetlands operated at a longer retention time of 5 days; with intermittent wastewater feeding, facilitated over 50% removal of organic matter in slaughterhouse wastewater.

Diel fluctuations of high level nitrate and dissolved organic carbon concentrations in constructed wetland mesocosms

Portable in situ ultraviolet-visual spectrometers, through high frequency water quality measurements, provide new insight into biogeochemical processes occurring within dynamic ecosystems. Nitrogen and carbon cycling were observed in two distinct wetland mesocosm environments during a two-year mesocosm study. Simulated drainage water was loaded into the mesocosms across seasons with target nitrate-N levels between 2.5 and 10 mg L−1. Nitrate-N and dissolved organic carbon concentrations in the water column were measured hourly with the spectrometer and calibrated with water quality grab samples. Prominent and unique diel cycles were observed in both nitrate-N and dissolved organic carbon readings from the spectrometer, which reveal biogeochemical processes in these systems are more complicated than typically considered in empirical models. Findings support the importance of utilizing high frequency monitoring to advance current knowledge of nitrogen and carbon processes occurring in treatment wetland ecosystems.

Comparison of nutrient retention efficiency between vertical-flow and floating treatment wetland mesocosms with and without biodegradable plastic

Treatment wetlands are ecological systems that are engineered to improve polluted water quality through macrophyte, soil, and microbial remediation and are used commonly for urban and agricultural runoff treatment. However, constructed wetlands used for marine aquaculture effluent treatments are understudied when compared to their freshwater counterpart. We compared the nutrient retention and the microbial communities of two types of constructed wetland mesocosms, a vertical-flow treatment wetland (VFTW) and floating treatment wetland (FTW) in subtropical south Florida. To enhance nutrient retention efficiency, we implemented biodegradable plastic (polycaprolactone), as an external carbon source and monitored the performance of VFTW and FTW for the treatment of marine aquaculture effluent. Polycaprolactone surface were covered by various cyanobacterial genera including Oscillatoria, Leptolyngbya, Brasilonema, and Trichormus and some plastic-degrading bacteria such as Pseudomonas. The presence of a biodegradable plastic in FTW improved the overall performance of nitrogen removal (nitrite plus nitrate) by 14% through denitrification. The pattern of nutrient removal between two treatment wetland mesocosms were significantly different (p < 0.01), with over 87–91% retention of total nitrogen in VFTW and no retention in FTW, the latter due to poor retention of nitrite plus nitrate and production of organic nitrogen from the system not present in inflow waters. Total phosphorus was retained in both mesocosm types, with higher retention (74–81%) in the VFTW than in the FTW (17–40%). The nutrient retention in VFTW was higher overall compared with FTW mesocosms regardless of biodegradable plastic presence.
