Low adsorption affinity of athabasca oil sands naphthenic acid fraction compounds to a peat-mineral mixture

Much of the toxicity in oil sands process-affected water in Athabasca oil sands tailings has been attributed to naphthenic acids (NAs) and associated naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs). Previous work has characterized the environmental behaviour and fate of these compounds, particularly in the context of constructed treatment wetlands. There is evidence that wetlands can attenuate NAFCs in natural and engineered contexts, but relative contributions of chemical, biotic, and physical adsorption with sequestration require deconvolution. In this work, the objective was to evaluate the extent to which prospective wetland substrate material may adsorb NAFCs using a peat-mineral mix (PMM) sourced from the Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR). The PMM and NAFCs were first mixed and then equilibrated across a range of NAFC concentrations (5–500 mg/L) with moderate ionic strength and hardness (∼200 ppm combined Ca2+ and Mg2+) that approximate wetland water chemistry. Under these experimental conditions, low sorption of NAFCs to PMM was observed, where sorbed concentrations of NAFCs were approximately zero mg/kg at equilibrium. When NAFCs and PMM were mixed and equilibrated together at environmentally relevant concentrations, formula diversity increased more than could be explained by combining constituent spectra. The TOC present in this PMM was largely cellulose-derived, with low levels of thermally recalcitrant carbon (e.g., lignin, black carbon). The apparent enhancement of the concentration and diversity of components in PMM/NAFCs mixtures are likely related to aqueous solubility of some PMM-derived organic materials, as post-hoc combination of dissolved components from PMM and NAFCs cannot replicate enhanced complexity observed when the two components are agitated and equilibrated together.

Research Trends and Future Prospects of Constructed Wetland Treatment Technology in China

With the intensification of water pollution problems worldwide, constructed wetlands, as a green, efficient, and energy-saving wastewater treatment technology, have gradually attracted the wide attention of scholars at home and abroad. In order to better understand and master the research trends of constructed wetland treatment technology in China and promote its development, the literature from 2000 to 2023 in the CNKI database and the Web of Science (WoS) database (located in China) were selected as research objects. Then, CiteSpace software (6.2.R4) was used to visualize and analyze the literature, revealing the research trends and hot areas of constructed wetland treatment technology in China. Then, the optimized way of operation effect of constructed wetland was discussed to provide a theoretical and technical basis for the wide application of constructed wetland technology in our country. The results indicate that the annual publication volume of research on constructed wetlands in China is showing a rapid upward trend. Among them, the Chinese literature mainly focuses on how to improve the application effect of constructed wetlands on nitrogen and phosphorus removal of rural domestic wastewater by matching different wetland plants or developing combined processes. The English literature from the Web of Science (WoS) database mainly focuses on how to remove emerging pollutants, such as heavy metals and resistance genes in wastewater in China, by changing the filling matrix and microbial community structure or developing new processes, and the related mechanisms have been discussed. One of the hot spots for the future research of constructed wetlands in China is to vigorously develop microbial fuel cells, and try to overcome the problem of poor purification efficiency of constructed wetlands under complex conditions such as low temperature, low carbon-nitrogen ratio, and high pollution load. In order to strengthen its application, the specific optimization methods can be divided into two categories: self-optimization strategies such as increasing oxygen supply and transfer, providing electron donor matrix, preventing matrix blockage, and combination processes coupled with anaerobic treatment and other technologies.

Treatment Wetland Plant Harvests as a Tool for Soil Phosphorus Reduction in North Central US Agricultural Watersheds

Agricultural watersheds in the North Central United States have been intensively farmed for decades with widespread application of fertilizer and extensive tilling practices. Soil phosphorus built up in sediments over time as a result of these practices may be released under anaerobic conditions, such as flood events. These floods are increasing in frequency and intensity due to climate change, leading to downstream water-quality concerns. Edge-of-field best management practices, including constructed treatment wetlands, provide a natural buffer for excess phosphorus runoff, but may only be a temporary solution if soil becomes oversaturated with phosphorus over extended periods of time. Preventing wetlands from becoming sources of phosphorus to water bodies may be essential for management in future years when considering impacts from climate change. This research assesses how wetland plant harvesting can reduce soil phosphorus accumulation (measured as Olsen phosphorus) in edge-of-field treatment wetlands, thereby preventing these systems from becoming phosphorus sources and ensuring the longevity of water-quality benefits from these systems. Using several 380 L controlled wetland mesocosm experiments in 2018–2019, we assessed above-ground plant material (S. tabernaemontani and B. fluviatilis) and soil Olsen P through the growing season and after harvest. We observed a reduction in soil phosphorus from wetland plant harvesting between 1–50% over one year, with a mean reduction of 7.9 mg/kg. B. fluviatilis initially contained higher P concentration early in the season (0.82% P content) compared to S. tabernaemontani (0.76% P), but S. tabernaemontani retained higher P later in the season (0.3% P content) compared to B. fluviatilis (0.25%). Time of season may significantly impact plant P removal potential, including accessibility of treatment wetland sites. While controlled mesocosm experiments may not always be applicable to real landscape-level management, this study highlights the potential for reductions in soil phosphorus and corresponding downstream phosphorus fluxes in edge-of-field treatment wetlands through plant harvest during the growing season. Plant harvesting can be used by land managers in edge-of-field treatment wetlands as an adaptation mechanism for shifting environmental conditions, such as increased heavy rainfall occurrences and flood events, that are exacerbated by climate change in this region.

Simulation and optimization of magnetic and experimental study of magnetic field coupling constructed wetland.

AbstractThis study developed a novel constructed wetland (CW) coupled with a magnetic field for treating domestic wastewater, and the magnetic field distribution was solved and optimized by the finite element method. Herein, we investigated the effects of optimizing magnetic field optimization and studied its impact on CW treatment performance and the responses of a microbial community. The optimization results showed that the average magnetic field strength of the CW unit increases from 3mT to 8mT, and the proportion of areas with magnetic field strength greater than 5mT also increases from 30% to 74%. The water quality analysis results showed that the removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH4+-N (p < 0.01) was significantly increased by the magnetic field (average 3mT), increasing by 12.2% and 8.49%, respectively. Moreover, the removal of COD and NH4+-N (p < 0.01) was more significantly increased by M-VFCW(O) (average 8mT), increasing by 15.58% and 49.1%, respectively. The magnetic field application shifted significantly the abundance of dominant bacteria in CWs. Relative abundance of dominant bacteria such as Proteobacteria (63.3%), Firmicutes (4.72%) and Actinobacteria (2.11%) that played an important role in organics removal and nitrification and denitrification-related bacteria such as Nitrospirae (1.48%) and Planctomycetes (9.58%) significantly promoted in M-VFCW(O). These results suggest that introducing a magnetic field into CWs may improve organics and nitrogen removal via the biological process, and the optimization of the magnetic field was significant in enhancing the performance of VFCWs.

A review on the fate of micro and nano plastics (MNPs) and their implication in regulating nutrient cycling in constructed wetland systems

This review discusses the micro-nano plastics (MNPs) and their interaction with physical, chemical and biological processes in a constructed wetland (CW) system that is typically used as a nature-based tertiary wastewater treatment for municipal as well as industrial applications. Individual components of the CW system such as substrate, microorganisms and plants were considered to assess how MNPs influence the CW processes. One of the main functions of a CW system is removal of nutrients like nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and here we highlight the pathways through which the MNPs influence CW's efficacy of nutrient removal. The presence of morphologically (size and shape) and chemically different MNPs influence the growth rate of microorganisms important in N and P cycling, invertebrates, decomposers, and the plants which affect the overall efficiency of a CW treatment system. Certain plant species take up the MNPs, and some toxicity has been observed. This review focuses on two significant aspects: (1) the presence of MNPs in a significant concentration affects the efficiency of N and P removal, and (2) the removal of MNPs. Because MNPs reduce the enzyme activities in abundance and overproduction of ROS oxidizes the enzyme active sites, resulting in the depletion of proteins, ultimately inhibiting nitrogen and phosphorus removal within the substrate layer. The review found that the majority of the studies used sand-activated carbon (SAC), granular-activated carbon (GAC), rice straw, granular limestone, and calcium carbonate, as a substrate for CW treatment systems. Common plant species used in the CW include Phragmites, Arabidopsis thaliana, Lepidium sativum, Thalia dealbata, and Canna indica, which were also found to be dominant in the uptake of the MNPs in the CWs. The MNPs were found to affect earthworms such as Eisenia fetida, Caenorhabditis elegans, and, Enchytraeus crypticus, whereas Metaphire vulgaris were found unaffected. Though various mechanisms take place during the removal process, adsorption and uptake mechanism effectively emphasize the removal of MNPs and nitrogen and phosphorus in CW. The MNPs characteristics (type, size, and concentration) play a crucial role in the removal efficiency of nano-plastics (NPs) and micro-plastics (MPs). The enhanced removal efficiency of NPs compared to MPs can be attributed to their smaller size, resulting in a faster reaction rate. However, NPs dose variation showed fluctuating removal efficiency, whereas MPs dose increment reduces removal efficiency. MP and NPs dose variation also affected toxicity to plants and earthworms as observed from data. Understanding the fate and removal of microplastics in wetland systems will help determine the reuse potential of wastewater and restrict the release of microplastics. This study provides information on various aspects and highlights future gaps and needs for MNP fate study in CW systems.

Developing a novel lightweight substrate for constructed treatment wetland: The idea and the reality

The cost-effective and environmentally friendly substrates play an important role in functioning constructed wetlands (CWs). This study innovatively composes aluminum sludge and polyurethane under the action of a catalyst to develop a novel lightweight substrate (Al-NLS), which is expected to be used as a main substrate in CWs. The driving force of it lies in reducing construction costs of CWs in practice, while offering a flexible and considerably efficient substrate in CW. The bulk density of the resultant Al-NLS was apparently reduced by about 80 % compared with common substrate of gravel. The static adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption behavior of Al-NLS on phosphorus (P) was in accordance with Langmuir isotherm (with maximum P adsorption capacity of 1.12 mg/g,) and quasi-second-order kinetic models. The use of Al-NLS as a single stage wetland substrate to treat real domestic wastewater has favorable removal efficiencies of COD (65.9–74.3 %), TP (86.9–98.6 %), NH4+-N (61.1–52.2 %) and TN (35.4–45.6 %). The mechanisms of P removal onto Al-NLS were examined by various physiochemical characterizations of Al-NLS and raw alum sludge, which revealed that P adsorption was via forming Hydroxy-Al by ion exchange. In addition, high throughput sequencing analysis revealed that Al-NLS had positive impact on the richness and diversity of microbial community for pollutants removal, while the abundance of key functional bacteria such as proteobacteria and bacteroidota was higher in the longer retention time of CW (HRT = 2 days). These results indicated that Al-NLS could be used as a new alternative substrate in CWs technology.

Microbial degradation of naphthenic acids using constructed wetland treatment systems: metabolic and genomic insights for improved bioremediation of process-affected water.

Naphthenic acids (NAs) are a complex mixture of organic compounds released during bitumen extraction from mined oil sands that are important contaminants of oil sands process-affected water (OSPW). NAs can be toxic to aquatic organisms and, therefore, are a main target compound for OSPW. The ability of microorganisms to degrade NAs can be exploited for bioremediation of OSPW using constructed wetland treatment systems (CWTS), which represent a possible low energy and low-cost option for scalable in situ NA removal. Recent advances in genomics and analytical chemistry have provided insights into a better understanding of the metabolic pathways and genes involved in NA degradation. Here, we discuss the ecology of microbial NA degradation with a focus on CWTS and summarize the current knowledge related to the metabolic pathways and genes used by microorganisms to degrade NAs. Evidence to date suggests that NAs are mostly degraded aerobically through ring cleavage via the beta-oxidation pathway, which can be combined with other steps such as aromatization, alpha-oxidation, omega-oxidation, or activation as coenzyme A (CoA) thioesters. Anaerobic NA degradation has also been reported via the production of benzoyl-CoA as an intermediate and/or through the involvement of methanogens or nitrate, sulfate, and iron reducers. Furthermore, we discuss how genomic, statistical, and modeling tools can assist in the development of improved bioremediation practices.

Evaluation of ecotechnology performance in treating textile wastewater: constructed treatment wetlands and natural adsorbents

The development of environmentally friendly technology for water ecosystem rehabilitation has become a challenge in solving pollution control problems in water bodies. Ecotechnology is a technology to improve water quality using an ecosystem approach, including the technology of constructed treatment wetlands and natural adsorbents. This study aims to produce an alternative ecotechnology for textile industrial waste remediation, on-site treatment of water bodies contaminated with textile waste, using a constructed treatment wetlands system and natural adsorbents. The result was conducted for 6 months using a reactor on a pilot scale with a continuous system. The result showed that CTWs’ ability effectively reduced ammonia in textile wastewater with a 20% dilution of up to > 80% and > 90% respectively using plants Vetiveria zizanioides and Heliconia psittacorum. Meanwhile, at 50% textile wastewater dilution, CTW with Heliconia psittacorum was more effective in reducing ammonia (> 80%) than CTW with Vetiveria zizanioides (> 60%). CTW with Vetiveria zizanioides and Heliconia psittacorum was able to reduce the dye content up to < 69.68% and < 54.39%, respectively. The natural adsorbent ability of bentonite has a higher ability to reduce dyes and ammonia, which is up to < 64.84% and < 91.12%. Good performance in these two eco-technology systems will result in better waste disposal by combining these two systems into one ecotechnology system.

Tidal and vertical flow constructed wetland treatment for graywater modeling and reusing with biochar cadmium adsorption.

This study addresses a persistent environmental concern related to graywater discharge from households, highlighting its potential to contribute to increased pollution in water bodies. To mitigate this issue, the research explores the use of subsurface flow-built wetlands, specifically focusing on the innovative application of constructed tidal and vertical flow wetlands (CTWFWs) as wastewater treatment systems. The study not only evaluates the efficacy of these CTWFW systems but also delves into the crucial aspects of their operation and their interactions with the biological, physical, and chemical characteristics of graywater. A key innovation of this research is the investigation of zeolite's effectiveness and the utilization of perlite-based plant species in both mixed and monoculture configurations to develop lab-scale hybrid constructed wetlands (HCWs). These HCWs are designed for the removal of organic matter and nutrients from graywater, offering a sustainable and cost-effective solution to this environmental challenge. The study also examines the dynamic processes involved in graywater treatment, emphasizing how the removal of parameters like biological oxygen demand (BOD), nutrients, total suspended solids (TSS), and disinfection efficiency can significantly impact the effectiveness of treatment systems. Furthermore, the research scrutinizes the intricate relationship between the treatment unit's dimensions and the specific criteria that need to be met for efficient graywater treatment. Intriguingly, the study tracks the changes in graywater composition and the treatment process over time. By conducting on-site measurements of various physicochemical characteristics such as temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), electrical conductivity (EC), turbidity, total dissolved solids (TDS), and pH, the research offers a comprehensive understanding of the treatment system's performance and adaptability. The study dives into the microbial communities within the treatment systems, utilizing 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing to characterize the complex microbial ecosystem present in graywater. This approach sheds light on the interplay between microorganisms, physicochemical conditions, plant responses, substrate dynamics, and the production of microbial metabolites. It underscores the holistic nature of the research, encompassing various aspects of graywater treatment. Notably, the study explores the application of biochar in combination with the target heavy metal, cadmium (Cd), within constructed wetlands (CWs). This innovative approach aims to better understand the kinetics and isothermal adsorption of lead in the context of mouthwash residue, expanding the knowledge base in this critical area. The research findings are substantial, with remarkable removal efficiencies achieved for parameters like TSS, turbidity, chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate, and phosphate. These results underscore the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed treatment methods. This holistic and pioneering research significantly advances the understanding of sustainable graywater treatment, offering valuable insights and practical solutions to mitigate water pollution concerns. Adding Corbicula fluminea altered the effect of plant species diversity on greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen removal from constructed wetlands in the low-temperature season

Plant species diversity is crucial in greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen removal from constructed wetlands (CWs). However, previous studies have overlooked the impact of benthos on cumulative greenhouse gas emissions during the low-temperature season in CWs. In this study, we established 66 vertical flow CWs with three levels of species richness (1, 2, and 4 species) and eleven species compositions. The Corbicula fluminea was added or not added at each diversity level and monitored greenhouse gas emissions and effluent nitrogen concentration. Our findings indicated that (1) in microcosms without C. fluminea, high species richness significantly increased effluent nitrogen concentrations (NO3−-N, NH4+-N, and TIN), but plant species richness did not affect cumulative CH4, N2O, and CO2 emissions. The presence of Hemerocallis fulva significantly increased cumulative CO2 emissions, while the presence of Iris tectorum significantly increased effluent nitrogen (NO3−-N and TIN) concentrations and cumulative N2O emissions; (2) in microcosms with C. fluminea, the lowest cumulative CH4 emissions occurred when there were two species, but plant species richness did not affect cumulative CO2 and N2O emissions. The presence of H. fulva significantly increased cumulative CH4 emissions, while the presence of Reineckea carnea significantly increased effluent nitrogen (NO3−-N, NH4+- N, TIN) concentrations; (3) at the same diversity level, the addition of C. fluminea significantly increased cumulative CH4 and N2O emissions, as well as effluent nitrogen concentrations. These results demonstrate that C. fluminea alters the effect of plant species diversity on cumulative greenhouse gas emissions and nitrogen removal from CWs during the low-temperature season. We recommend using a two-species mixture to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. However, we caution against using plant compositions with H. fulva or I. tectorum for effective wastewater treatment and greenhouse gas reduction in CWs.

Evaluating the attenuation of naphthenic acids in constructed wetland mesocosms planted with Carex aquatilis

Surface oil sands mining and extraction in northern Alberta’s Athabasca oil sands region produce large volumes of oil sands process–affected water (OSPW). OSPW is a complex mixture containing major contaminant classes including trace metals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, and naphthenic acid fraction compounds (NAFCs). Naphthenic acids (NAs) are the primary organic toxicants in OSPW, and reducing their concentrations is a priority for oil sands companies. Previous evidence has shown that constructed wetland treatment systems (CWTSs) are capable of reducing the concentration of NAs and the toxicity of OSPW through bioremediation. In this study, we constructed greenhouse mesocosms with OSPW or lab process water (LPW) (i.e., water designed to mimic OSPW minus the NAFC content) with three treatments: (1) OSPW planted with Carex aquatilis; (2) OSPW, no plants; and (3) LPW, no plants. The OSPW–C. aquatilis treatment saw a significant reduction in NAFC concentrations in comparison to OSPW, no plant treatments, but both changed the distribution of the NAFCs in similar ways. Upon completion of the study, treatments with OSPW saw fewer high-molecular-weight NAs and an increase in the abundance of O3- and O4-containing formulae. Results from this study provide invaluable information on how constructed wetlands can be used in future remediation of OSPW in a way that previous studies were unable to achieve due to uncontrollable environmental factors in field experiments and the active, high-energy processes used in CWTSs pilot studies.

Characterization of bird, reptile, and insect community diversity in constructed wetlands and waste stabilization ponds across Tanzania

Wastewater treatment systems, such as Constructed Wetlands (CWs) and Waste Stabilization Ponds (WSPs), have untapped biodiversity enhancement and development potential. Birds, insects, and reptiles, which are displaced by human development, might find refuge in these ecosystems. However, the lack of a detailed characterization of the biodiversity status of these wastewater treatment systems hinders their widespread adoption. Point counts, direct observations, and camera traps were used to assess bird diversity across five CWs and three WSPs in Tanzania in 2021. For insects and reptiles, pitfall and pan traps were laid along established transects, in addition, direct observations and fishnets were also used to assess the reptiles dwelling within the WSPs. Abundance, Shannon index, Simpson index, Margalef index, and evenness index were the diversity parameters used to analyze the diversity of birds, insects, and reptiles. Our results show that among the studied groups and between WSPs and CWs, birds had high species abundance (n = 1132), richness, Margalef index (D = 4.266), evenness (E = 0.815), Shannon diversity (H = 2.881) and Simpson index (λ =0.903). The abundance and diversity of studied groups differed significantly (P < 0.05) between WSPs and CWs. Our study also recorded four reptile species belonging to three orders. Molecular analyses confirmed that insect species belong to nine orders and 13 families, with the order Diptera dominating both CWs and WSPs, followed by Orthoptera, Hymenoptera, and Araneae. We conclude that CW and WSP wastewater treatment systems are important for hosting various populations of birds, reptiles, and insect species.

‘Dual Purpose’ Surface Flow Constructed Treatment Wetlands Support Native Biodiversity in Intensified Agricultural Landscapes

In agricultural landscapes, free-water surface flow wetlands (FWS) are constructed mainly to improve water quality; however, their contribution to biodiversity conservation is increasingly recognised. To inform biodiversity management in FWS treating agricultural runoff, we surveyed the vegetation and fauna assemblages in five established FWS in a lowland, pastoral landscape in the central North Island, New Zealand. The FWS had been established for between 3 and 19 years, planted with a restricted range of native plant species, and fenced to exclude livestock access. Larger wetlands hosted significantly more plant and mammal species. However, other than wetland size, we found few other significant relationships between wetland habitat, landscape characteristics, and measures of biodiversity (total species, proportion of native species, number of wetland specialists, or threatened species). We recorded one-hundred and thirteen plant, twenty bird, five mammal, eighty-five terrestrial invertebrates, forty-seven aquatic invertebrates, six fish, and two amphibian species inhabiting the FWS. Native species comprised 96% of the total aquatic invertebrate fauna identified. For other taxa, native flora and fauna accounted for half or less than half of all species identified: 53% terrestrial invertebrates, 50% fish, 45% birds, 32% plants, and 0% amphibian and mammal species. Few wetland specialists (aquatic or wetland-adapted) or threatened native species were detected, probably reflecting the limited range of wetland plant species in initial plantings and the difficulties native taxa face when colonising new habitat where potential reservoirs of colonist species are also depauperate or too distant. FWS support native biodiversity, but further enhancements may require active management of exotic and pest species to minimise competition or predation on native species.

The largest constructed treatment wetland project in the world: The story of the Everglades stormwater treatment areas

The Everglades Stormwater Treatment Areas (STAs) are the largest complex of constructed treatment wetlands in the world with a current treatment area of over 25,000 ha which will total approximately 25,900 ha by the end of 2025. They are designed to remove phosphorus from agricultural and urban stormwater runoff, and when there is available capacity, they can also receive and treat water from Lake Okeechobee. STA-treated water is then sent south to the Everglades to support restoration and maintenance of this unique ecosystem. The recommendation to build treatment wetlands began in 1988 with the Lake Okeechobee Technical Advisory Committee, and the mandate to operate and maintain the STAs continues today through operating permits and consent orders issued to the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. The permits and consent orders set forth a stringent phosphorus water quality-based effluent limit (WQBEL) that must be met starting in 2026. SFWMD has conducted extensive research on treatment wetland function and phosphorus removal efficiency to support construction, management, and operation of the STAs to achieve the WQBEL. The most recent work has been conducted under the Restoration Strategies Science Plan. This 11-year research program began in 2013 and will continue through 2024 to address six key scientific questions aimed at assisting the SFWMD in meeting the WQBEL for discharges from the Everglades STAs. What follows in this Special Edition are articles discussing the results and conclusions from several of these studies.

Designing appropriate site determination criteria for installing constructed wetland treatment system based on multi-criteria decision-making analyses

Constructed wetlands have recently started to be applied as the most important type of nature-based solution against the effects of climate change. This study investigates the determination of the most suitable site determination criteria for the application of this important nature-based solution tool by multiple decision-making methods. For this purpose, first of all, the literature was reviewed and the ten most important criteria for constructed wastelands were determined. Then, fieldwork was carried out according to these determined criteria, and a location was determined in the field according to each criterion. The global positioning system device is used to mark 10 locations that have been determined as waypoints for 10 criteria. The determined waypoints were then scored using the relevant criteria, and the best location was determined using the Multiple Attribute Utility Theory methods. Waypoint 1 received the highest score, 8.4, according to the results. Later, waypoint 7 received a score of 6.2, and waypoint 9 received a score of 5.7.

Hybrid constructed wetlands amended with zeolite/biochar for enhanced landfill leachate treatment

Landfill leachate contains high concentrations of ammonia and recalcitrant organic compounds, which can interfere with wastewater treatment processes. Hybrid constructed wetlands (CWs), consisting of Vertical Flow (VF) CWs followed by Horizontal Flow (HF) CWs, are low cost technologies for onsite leachate treatment. This study investigated the potential of low-cost adsorbent materials, a natural zeolite mineral (clinoptilolite) and biochar, to enhance leachate treatment in hybrid CWs. Two mesocosm hybrid CWs were set up at a Florida (US) landfill. In the Adsorbent-CW 10% (v/v) of zeolite was added to the VF-CW to enhance nitrification and 13% (v/v) biochar was added to the HF-CW to increase microbial activity and plant growth. A Control-CW contained only gravel. Both systems were planted with cattails (Typha latifolia) and cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) and operated at varying hydraulic loading rates for ~2 years. A HF-CW containing wood chips (Woodchip-CW) was added downstream of the Adsorbent-CW during the final 6-months of operation to enhance denitrification. Results showed that zeolite addition to the VF-CW significantly increased nitrification rates by 16–93% due to cycles of ammonium adsorption and bioregeneration under intermittent loading conditions. Biochar addition increased removal of organic matter (21–26% to 29–44%) and color (1–18% to 7–49%), and improved wetland plant growth and nitrogen removal due to enhanced plant growth and rhizosphere microbial activity. Addition of the Woodchip-CW reduced nitrate accumulation, resulting in total nitrogen removals of up to 79%.

Stems of Phragmites australis are buffering methane and carbon dioxide emissions

Internal concentrations in the culm nodes of Phragmites australis and fluxes of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were recorded in the treatment bed of constructed wetland (CW) with subsurface wastewater horizontal flow. Fluxes of CH4 and CO2 from the CW treatment bed were in ranges of 0 to 490 μmol m−2 h−1 and from 0 to 4499 μmol m−2 h−1 for CH4 and CO2, respectively. The highest CH4 soil fluxes were recorded in the unvegetated coarse gravel inflow zone of the CW treatment bed. The nearby inflow zone exhibited the highest CO2 fluxes. Internal culm node concentrations of CH4 and CO2 were related to oxygen (O2) stem concentrations and environmental conditions during diurnal courses. The concentrations of CH4 and CO2 gases were significantly correlated and opposing O2 concentrations. Culm node parameters and shoot density of P. australis influenced internal gas concentrations and the buffering of CH4 and CO2 emissions. The effect of buffering CH4 emissions is distinctive in the outflow zone of the treatment bed and is less important in the highly polluted inflow zone of the CW. Buffering of CH4 and partially also CO2 emissions by stems of P. australis is a process which affects the diurnal dynamics of CH4 and CO2 fluxes from common reed wetlands.

Microplastic biofilm, associated pathogen and antimicrobial resistance dynamics through a wastewater treatment process incorporating a constructed wetland

Microplastics in wastewater are colonized by biofilms containing pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) genes that can be exported into receiving water bodies. This study investigated establishment and changes in microplastic-associated biofilm and AMR during a conventional full-scale 2100 population equivalent wastewater treatment process combined with a free water surface polishing constructed wetland. Sequential microplastic colonization experiments were conducted at different stages of the wastewater treatment process, including in raw sewage, treated effluent and the constructed wetland. Two scenarios were tested in which the constructed wetland served as either (i) a polishing step or (ii) as primary recipient of sewage inoculated microplastics. Bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequencing was carried out for qualitative bacterial community analysis. qPCR was applied for quantitative analysis of AMR genes (sul1, ermB, tetW, intiI1), bacterial biomass (16S rRNA) and a human fecal marker (HF183). Microbial diversity on microplastics increased with incubation time. The initial sewage-derived biofilm composition changed more significantly in the wastewater effluent compared to the constructed wetland. Pathogen and AMR load decreased by up to two orders of magnitude after coupled conventional and constructed wetland treatment, while less impact was observed when sewage-inoculated microplastic material was directly transferred into the constructed wetland. Aeromonas, Klebsiella, and Streptococcus were key pathogenic genera correlated with AMR in microplastic-associated biofilms. Despite decreasing trends on human pathogens and AMR load along the treatment process, microplastic-associated biofilms were a considerable potential hotspot for AMR (intI1 gene) and accommodated Cyanobacteria and fish pathogens.

Genomic Characterization and Wetland Occurrence of a Novel Campylobacter Isolate from Canada Geese.

Populations of resident, non-migratory Canada geese are rapidly increasing. Canada geese are known to transmit viral and bacterial diseases, posing a possible threat to human health. The most prevalent pathogens vectored by geese are Campylobacter species, yet the current understanding of the identity and virulence of these pathogens is limited. In our previous study, we observed a high prevalence of Campylobacter spp. in the Banklick Creek wetland-a constructed treatment wetland (CTW) located in northern KY (USA) used to understand sources of fecal contamination originating from humans and waterfowl frequenting the area. To identify the types of Campylobacter spp. found contaminating the CTW, we performed genetic analyses of Campylobacter 16s ribosomal RNA amplified from CTW water samples and collected fecal material from birds frequenting those areas. Our results showed a high occurrence of a Campylobacter canadensis-like clade from the sampling sites. Whole-genome sequence analyses of an isolate from Canada goose fecal material, called MG1, were used to confirm the identity of the CTW isolates. Further, we examined the phylogenomic position, virulence gene content, and antimicrobial resistance gene profile of MG1. Lastly, we developed an MG1-specific real-time PCR assay and confirmed the presence of MG1 in Canada goose fecal samples surrounding the CTW. Our findings reveal that the Canada goose-vectored Campylobacter sp. MG1 is a novel isolate compared to C. canadensis that possesses possible zoonotic potential, which may be of human health concern.

Application of Constructed Wetland in Rural Sewage Treatment and Its Strengthening Technology

This paper starts from the current situation of rural sewage, analyzes the current common sewage treatment process at home and abroad and the existing mainstream sewage treatment process, compares and analyzes rural domestic sewage with urban domestic sewage, and proposes suitable treatment measures for the characteristics of rural domestic sewage - constructed wetland, because a single constructed wetland treatment measure will have problems such as low treatment efficiency and substandard effluent quality, so This paper presents its views on how to improve and optimize the constructed wetland using the existing reinforcement process, and improve the efficiency of the constructed wetland for rural sewage treatment by using some reinforcement measures. The article introduces and analyzes various existing reinforcement processes, compares the advantages and disadvantages of each reinforcement process, and especially discusses magnetic field reinforcement technology in detail, showing that magnetic field reinforcement technology has a certain role in sewage treatment, and compared with the traditional process without magnetic field reinforcement treatment, the reinforcement measures have significantly improved the treatment effect of sewage, and finally, the constructed wetland and reinforcement technology in rural Finally, the application of constructed wetland and intensification technology in rural sewage treatment is proposed.
