Whistleblowing and interpretation, addressing organizational challenges: a conceptual reflection from Nigeria

Purpose This study aims to explore the effect of whistleblowing and interpretation among practitioners in the Nigerian economy. The research puts a premium on understanding the relevance and critical issues in its practices and developing an improved model for the effective practice of whistleblowing and interpretation in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach This study adopted a conceptual approach, relying on extant literature to understand the management of whistleblowing incidents and identify the managers’ and other stakeholders’ responsibility in the whistleblowing process. It applied systems dynamics conceptual modelling and presented an improvement approach to addressing the complexities associated with whistleblowing and interpretation among Nigerian organizations. Findings This study contributed to the extant literature by developing a model for proper management of whistleblowing in the Nigerian context and enhancing the robust practice of whistleblowing and interpretation in Nigeria. The findings highlighted critical factors such as managers’ skills development, legal system support, institutional stakeholders’ function and ethical balance as key factors to effective whistleblowing management and interpretation. This implies that the act of identifying and developing responses to an emerging case of whistleblowing requires a process of developing underpinning assumptions, engagement and consideration of stakeholders’ interests while driving the sustenance of organizational focus. Originality/value This study emphasized the departure from absolute best practice to developing idea approaches that reflect stakeholders’ interests and the context of whistleblowing and interpretation. While the study acknowledges limitations in the sole focus on the Nigerian private sector and the Nigerian economic background, it recommends further exploration of whistleblowing and its interpretation on a comparative approach, to improving the current understanding of the topic.

Experience Economy Perspective on Recreational Fishing Tourism Travelers’ Reviews: A Data Science Approach

Fishing tourism, a niche yet burgeoning sector within the broader tourism industry, presents a unique opportunity to explore the dynamics of the Experience Economy. This study delves into the intricacies of fishing tourism through the lens of data science, leveraging web crawling techniques to gather extensive data from reviewer profiles on TripAdvisor. By employing natural language processing (NLP) techniques, the study investigates the correlation between Experience Economy dimensions and user profiling aspects within this domain. The findings of this study shed light on the predominant dimensions of the Experience Economy within fishing tourism. “Entertainment” emerges as the primary dimension, closely followed by “Aesthetic”, “Educational”, and “Escapist” elements. Notably, the study reveals frequent co-occurrences of certain dimension pairs, such as “Entertainment”–“Aesthetic” and “Educational”–“Entertainment”, underscoring the multifaceted nature of the fishing tourism experience. The implications of this research extend beyond academic discourse to practical considerations for stakeholders in the fishing tourism sector. By highlighting the socioeconomic benefits inherent in fishing tourism for local communities and fishers, the study emphasizes the importance of governmental support. This support, in the form of infrastructure development, effective leadership, legislative measures, and financial backing, is deemed essential for fostering sustainable growth and development in this sector. This study stands as a pioneering endeavor within the realm of fishing tourism research, particularly in its focus on Experience Economy dimensions and user profiling. By drawing data from both business pages and user profiles on TripAdvisor, it provides a comprehensive understanding of the intricate interplay between tourist experiences and the broader economic and social landscape of fishing tourism destinations.

Catalyzing communities of research rigour champions.

The biomedical sciences must maintain and enhance a research culture that prioritizes rigour and transparency. The US National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke convened a workshop entitled 'Catalyzing Communities of Research Rigor Champions' that brought together a diverse group of leaders in promoting research rigour and transparency (identified as 'rigour champions') to discuss strategies, barriers and resources for catalyzing technical, cultural and educational changes in the biomedical sciences. This article summarizes 2 days of panels and discussions and provides an overview of critical barriers to research rigour, perspectives behind reform initiatives and considerations for stakeholders across science. Additionally, we describe applications of network science to foster, maintain and expand cultural changes related to scientific rigour and opportunities to embed rigourous practices into didactic courses, training experiences and degree programme requirements. We hope this piece provides a primer for the wider research community on current discussions and actions and inspires individuals to build, join or expand collaborative networks within their own institutions that prioritize rigourous research practices.

The Lean Impact Start-Up Framework: Fueling Innovation for Positive Societal Change

How can innovative solutions to address societal grand challenges be cultivated in a pragmatic and impactful way? In this article, we propose the “lean impact start-up” framework, which integrates the principles of the lean start-up methodology with fresh perspectives from new stakeholder theory—and specifically, stakeholder governance. The lean impact start-up framework is characterized by its experimental and learning-oriented nature and consists of a three-step process: value search, value creation, and value distribution. For each step, we propose a key mechanism and chart pathways for future research. At its core, the lean impact start-up framework differs from other start-up frameworks by an active consideration of diverse primary stakeholders and an expanded focus encompassing both economic and noneconomic outcomes. This framework serves as a transformative bridge that helps to close the divide between scholarly research and tangible, real-world impact.

Corporate Support as a Strategic Factor for Increasing the Economic Efficiency of Enterprises

"This study explores the impact of corporate support mechanisms—financial assistance, technology transfer, and consultancy services—on the economic efficiency of enterprises, integrating stakeholder analysis, prioritization, and theory into its analysis. Utilizing logistic regression on data from 250 diverse enterprises, the study reveals significant enhancements in economic efficiency through corporate support. Financial assistance increased the likelihood of high economic efficiency by 2.0 times, with technology transfer being even more influential, making enterprises 3.5 times more likely to achieve high efficiency. Consultancy services also played a significant role, improving efficiency likelihood by 1.8 times. The analysis provided a confidence interval of 1.2 to 2.7 for consultancy services, with a p-value of 0.005, highlighting its relevance. Additionally, the study delved into the role of enterprise characteristics and the competitive environment, revealing nuanced insights into their interaction with corporate support effectiveness. While enterprise size and sector did not exhibit a direct significant impact on economic efficiency, the competitive market dynamics were found to slightly decrease the likelihood of achieving high efficiency, with a negative coefficient indicating a complex relationship. The research further examines the complex interplay between corporate support and factors such as enterprise characteristics, market competition, and importantly, stakeholder interests. It suggests that aligning corporate support strategies with the nuanced expectations and priorities of stakeholders—not just focusing on direct economic gains—can significantly bolster an enterprise’s growth and operational efficiency. By advocating for tailored support strategies that consider the diverse needs and conditions of enterprises along with a comprehensive stakeholder approach, the findings highlight the essential role of corporate support in enhancing economic performance and competitive advantage, emphasizing the critical need for policies and practices that are responsive to both enterprise needs and stakeholder considerations."

A systemic approach to analyzing post-collapse adaptations in the Bay of Biscay anchovy fishery

The Bay of Biscay anchovy fishery system has undergone important transformations following a closure from 2005 to 2010. Through a multidisciplinary and systemic approach, combining analyses of fisheries and market data with interviews with key stakeholders, we analyze adaptive responses of the main system components in France and Spain, considering how the fishing sector and fishery management institutions have adapted to changes. Focusing on the question “what has been lost and gained following the collapse?”, we find that while the anchovy stock has recovered, the fishery system has not returned to its pre-collapse status with important socio-economic features having been lost. We highlight the need for holistic consideration of multiple system components and diverse stakeholders’ perspectives. The perceived losses and gains from the anchovy fishery collapse and aftermath are found to vary across the players in the fishery system, depending as well on the management objectives and scales being considered. Such retrospective analysis can serve as a basis for understanding the long-term responses to social-ecological changes in fisheries, and identifying the role of governance mechanisms in supporting adaptations that maintain sustainable fishery systems in the face of future potential shocks.

Corporate social responsibility and investment efficiency: The roles of national stakeholder orientation and legal origins

Utilizing an international setting consisting of 21,039 observations from 43 countries during the years from 2010 to 2019, spanning the period between the global financial and health crises, we first reveal that the two broad legal traditions of the country shape the positive connection between CSR performance and investment efficiency. We find a stronger positive linkage for companies operating under a civil law regime. Our findings also imply that U.S. firms buck the trend among English common law firms and have probably shifted their orientation to a more balanced consideration of stakeholders. Plus, we discover that legal origins are a stronger predictor of CSR perception by showing that stakeholders of the Scandinavian civil law system are more responsive to CSR activities than those in the German, French, and socialist civil law countries. Results are robust to a battery of sensitivity tests.

EFFECTIVE STAKEHOLDER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT IN THE OIL & GAS SECTOR: A CONCEPTUAL AND REVIEW PERSPECTIVE

Effective stakeholder relationship management (SRM) is imperative for the sustainable operation of companies within the oil and gas sector. This review provides a conceptual framework and review perspective on the strategies, challenges, and outcomes associated with SRM in this industry. The oil and gas sector operates within a complex web of stakeholders including governments, local communities, investors, employees, suppliers, and environmental organizations. Building and maintaining positive relationships with these stakeholders are essential for securing operational licenses, maintaining social license to operate, and fostering a conducive environment for business continuity. Drawing from existing literature, this review elucidates the key components of effective SRM in the oil and gas sector. Firstly, proactive engagement and communication emerge as fundamental strategies. Companies need to identify stakeholders, understand their interests and concerns, and engage with them transparently and consistently throughout project lifecycles. Secondly, fostering mutual value creation is crucial. Companies must seek win-win solutions that align their business objectives with stakeholders’ interests, thereby promoting long-term partnerships and trust. Thirdly, robust grievance mechanisms are necessary to address conflicts and grievances promptly and fairly, preventing escalation into legal or reputational crises. Despite its importance, SRM in the oil and gas sector faces several challenges. These include inherent power imbalances between companies and stakeholders, socio-political tensions in resource-rich regions, and the dynamic nature of stakeholder expectations. Additionally, the sector operates in a volatile market environment characterized by fluctuating oil prices and regulatory uncertainties, further complicating SRM efforts. The outcomes of effective SRM in the oil and gas sector are multifaceted. Beyond mitigating operational risks and enhancing reputational capital, it contributes to fostering social license to operate, facilitating access to capital and talent, and promoting sustainable development in host communities. Effective SRM in the oil and gas sector requires a proactive, value-driven, and adaptive approach. By integrating stakeholder considerations into strategic decision-making processes, companies can navigate complex socio-political landscapes, mitigate risks, and create shared value for all stakeholders involved.

Inklusi Keuangan, P2P Lending dan Kinerja UMKM: Peran Moderasi Literasi Keuangan

This research aims to examine the influence of financial inclusion and peer to peer lending (P2P lending) on the performance of SMEs in the city of Salatiga, as well as testing the moderating effect of financial literacy. This research used 92 MSMEs in the city of Salatiga as the sample. Primary data were processed by using the Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) technique. The study findings prove that: financial inclusion and P2P lending have a positive effect on MSME performance, then financial literacy strengthens the positive influence of financial inclusion and P2P lending on MSME performance. This study contributes to enriching literature in the field of financial management for MSMEs and can be a consideration for stakeholders and MSME players to improve business performance.

When to Pull the Trigger: Conceptual Considerations for Approximating Head Acceleration Events Using Instrumented Mouthguards.

Head acceleration events (HAEs) are acceleration responses of the head following external short-duration collisions. The potential risk of brain injury from a single high-magnitude HAE or repeated occurrences makes them a significant concern in sport. Instrumented mouthguards (iMGs) can approximate HAEs. The distinction between sensor acceleration events, the iMG datum for approximating HAEs and HAEs themselves, which have been defined as the in vivo event, is made to highlight limitations of approximating HAEs using iMGs. This article explores the technical limitations of iMGs that constrain the approximation of HAEs and discusses important conceptual considerations for stakeholders interpreting iMG data. The approximation of HAEs by sensor acceleration events is constrained by false positives and false negatives. False positives occur when a sensor acceleration event is recorded despite no (in vivo) HAE occurring, while false negatives occur when a sensor acceleration event is not recorded after an (in vivo) HAE has occurred. Various mechanisms contribute to false positives and false negatives. Video verification and post-processing algorithms offer effective means for eradicating most false positives, but mitigation for false negatives is less comprehensive. Consequently, current iMG research is likely to underestimate HAE exposures, especially at lower magnitudes. Future research should aim to mitigate false negatives, while current iMG datasets should be interpreted with consideration for false negatives when inferring athlete HAE exposure.

Enabling circular economy practices in regional contexts: Insights from the UK Southwest

While much research has focused on embedding circular economy (CE) practices in urban contexts, there is growing interest in the opportunities and challenges of rural settings. Adopting a regional lens can account for local knowledge, collective practices and community memory, yet CE conceptualisations often lack both a place-based dimension and a consideration of regional stakeholders. The aim of this paper is to explore the role of various stakeholders, in driving the adoption and implementation of CE practices at a regional level. We do this through engagement with 31 participants from business, governance and community groups in a peripheral region situated in the Southwest of the UK. Using stakeholder theory and thematic analysis of interviews, participant observation and workshop scripts, we identify ‘influencers’ as a key stakeholder group leading the implementation of regional CE goals and practices. Furthermore, we highlight key barriers and enabling factors which underpin interactions among different stakeholder groups and discuss their implications for regional CE transition.

Key programmatic and policy considerations for introducing multipurpose prevention (MPT) methods: reflections from healthcare providers and key stakeholders in South Africa.

Multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs) simultaneously prevent HIV, other sexually transmitted infections, and/or unintended pregnancy. Key gatekeepers, [healthcare providers (HCPs) and key stakeholders] require proactive engagement before product implementation. This manuscript identifies HCP demand creation strategies, key stakeholder considerations for the adoption of MPTs in South Africa. Formative research was conducted in three districts in three South African provinces (July to November 2022). Nurses initiating oral PrEP at facility and mobile study sites participated in 4-hour participatory workshops, exploring HIV prevention, including MPTs, demand creation strategies, and preferred MPTs training packages. Activities were observed, transcribed, and thematically analysed. Five online in-depth interviews (IDIs) with Key informants (KIs) (National/district programme implementers and technical leads) and one in person, exploring key programmatic and policy considerations for MPT adoption. IDIs were approximately 40 min long, audio recorded, transcribed, and thematically analysed. Twenty-one Professional Nurses completed workshops: 19 female. Six IDIs were conducted with 4 Facility Managers, 1 NDoH representative and 1 DoH Provincial Deputy Director. All participants were females, aged 30-60+ years with >10 years' in SRH/HIV policy/advocacy/research. Community conversations and information at the clinic were the best MPT demand creation methods among HCPs. KIs identified five considerations for future MPT implementation: HCP training; demand creation and messaging; existing PrEP policy amendments; preparing users for additional choice; and sustaining MPT provision. Contraceptive implant and oral PrEP implementation lessons learned should be proactively considered when preparing for MPT introduction. HCP training and demand creation are of particular importance before MPT introduction.

Business continuity of culinary SMEs: Empirical study of personal branding, corporate branding, open innovation, and competitive advantage

This study aims to uncover the interaction of intangible resources in personal branding, corporate branding, and open innovation in shaping the competitive advantage and sustainability of culinary SMEs in developing countries. Financial moderation is a moderation variable in the relationship between competitive advantage and business continuity. Using a quantitative approach involving 216 respondents, this study with SEM PLS analysis has produced empirical information that knowledge and branding resources (personal and corporate) have convincingly influenced the formation of competitive advantage and business continuity. This study reinforces resource-based theory and practically becomes a strategic consideration for stakeholders related to culinary SMEs in maintaining their existence in a competitive dynamic.

Time-Varying Bidirectional Causal Relationships between Transaction Fees and Economic Activity of Subsystems Utilizing the Ethereum Blockchain Network

The Ethereum blockchain network enables transaction processing and smart-contract execution through levies of transaction fees, commonly known as gas fees. This framework mediates economic participation via a market-based mechanism for gas fees, permitting users to offer higher gas fees to expedite processing. Historically, the ensuing gas fee volatility led to critical disequilibria between supply and demand for block space, presenting stakeholder challenges. This study examines the dynamic causal interplay between transaction fees and economic subsystems leveraging the network. By utilizing data related to unique active wallets and transaction volume of each subsystem and applying time-varying Granger causality analysis, we reveal temporal heterogeneity in causal relationships between economic activity and transaction fees across all subsystems. This includes (a) a bidirectional causal feedback loop between cross-blockchain bridge user activity and transaction fees, which diminishes over time, potentially signaling user migration; (b) a bidirectional relationship between centralized cryptocurrency exchange deposit and withdrawal transaction volume and fees, indicative of increased competition for block space; (c) decentralized exchange volumes causally influence fees, while fees causally influence user activity, although this relationship is weakening, potentially due to the diminished significance of decentralized finance; (d) intermittent causal relationships with maximal extractable value bots; (e) fees causally influence non-fungible token transaction volumes; and (f) a highly significant and growing causal influence of transaction fees on stablecoin activity and transaction volumes highlight its prominence. These results inform strategic considerations for stakeholders to more effectively plan, utilize, and advocate for economic activities on Ethereum, enhancing the understanding and optimization of within the rapidly evolving economy.

Human Resource Management, Technology Adaptation, and Environmental Policy: A Multi-Variable Study of MSME Entrepreneurship in Indonesia

This research explores the dynamics of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia, focusing on the interplay between Human Resource Management (HRM), Technology Adaptation, Environmental Policy, and MSME entrepreneurship. Despite government support and encouragement, MSMEs face challenges, particularly in managing human resources effectively and adapting to technological advancements. The study investigates the impact of HRM practices, technology adaptation, and environmental policy on MSME success through the lens of entrepreneurship. Using quantitative research design and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), the study analyzes data collected from a diverse sample of Indonesian MSMEs. The findings highlight the positive influence of effective HRM practices, technology adaptation, and environmental policy compliance on MSME entrepreneurship and success. The implications of the study suggest strategic considerations for entrepreneurs, policymakers, and stakeholders to enhance the growth and sustainability of MSMEs in Indonesia.

Analyzing Optimal Marketing Channels in the Vegetable Supply Chain: Exploring Factors Influencing Marketing Channel Selection

Potato is amongst most important vegetables being used in kitchens of ordinary and common men. The income elasticity of demand of potato is relatively high as compared with other vegetables. In Pakistan, the traditional fruit and vegetable markets and considered to be the places of pure competition and farmers are linked to these markets via different marketing channels. This study delves into the analysis of optimal marketing channels within the vegetable supply chain, with a focus on understanding the factors that influence the selection of these channels. The study used cross-sectional primary data gathered from different supply chain actors, including 120 potato growers, 20 retailers, 20 consumers, 16 commission agents, and 16 wholesalers from two districts of Punjab, namely Okara and Chinote. This research employs a two-fold methodology. First, it involves the identification of the optimal marketing channel among five alternatives using a unique ranking technique methodology. Second, it employs regression analysis with binary endogenous treatment to discern the factors affecting the choice of marketing channels. The study sheds light on the intricacies of marketing channel decisions in the vegetable supply chain, offering insights into the preferences and considerations of stakeholders in the Okara and Chinote districts of Punjab, Pakistan. The findings of the study contribute not only to the understanding of optimal channel selection but also to the broader knowledge of the factors that influence these decisions. These insights are valuable for practitioners, policymakers, and researchers aiming to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of marketing strategies within the agricultural sector, benefiting farming communities and the country as a whole.

Community-Based Critical Literacy Practices: A Reflective Study of Literacy Implementation in School

This article examines critical literacy practices carried out by the informal education community thoughtfully and potentially so that they can be applied to developing the school literacy movement program. Statistically, 95.66% of Indonesia's population can read, but on the other hand, the reading literacy score in the PISA study is still below average. So far, there have been different perspectives regarding literacy as a reading activity and literacy as an activity to process information. These differences result in different interpretations and attitudes in processing information in a text. Critical literacy relates reading analysis skills to the realities faced by students. This study aimed to find patterns of critical literacy carried out by the Ngampar Boekoe community and Jamaah Maiyah Al Manhal about the inherent development of the school literacy movement program. The research method used is qualitative with an auto-ethnographic approach. The data comes from the researcher's personal experience, observation, in-depth interviews and artefacts. Data analysis uses triangulation with a bottom-up pattern to find critical literacy formulas and can be reflected in the school literacy movement program. The results found are in the form of alternative formulations which consist of critical material that can develop students' critical power, dialectical methods filled with a sense of trust, and quality-based evaluation using response journal instruments and written works. The results of this study can be used as policy-making considerations for relevant stakeholders to build the qualifications of a literate society.

Letters to stakeholders: An emerging phenomenon of multi‐stakeholder engagement

AbstractWe explore a new phenomenon of multi‐stakeholder orientation and engagement in corporate communication: letters to stakeholders. By applying content, semantic, and quantitative analyses to standardized corporate communication among the 100 largest multinational companies worldwide, our study reveals that approximately one‐third of the examined companies have begun to utilize what could be considered letters to stakeholders. We demonstrate that letters to stakeholders adopt a multi‐stakeholder orientation, which describes the ability to speak a language that is widely comprehensible by a diverse audience. Letters to stakeholders are positively related to firm willingness to display multi‐stakeholder engagement activities by embracing stakeholder recognition, support, and dialog. Our findings position letters to stakeholders as a promising tool for and approach to corporate communication that improves the legitimacy and moral consideration of stakeholders.

Cooperative members are the most crucial part of the activities conducted by cooperatives. Cooperatives also contribute to realizing economic prosperity, both for their members and the surrounding community. The purpose of this research is to examine the relationship between service quality and the loyalty of members of sharia cooperatives in Indonesia. The research was conducted using a qualitative method with a literature review approach. The results show that the aspect of service quality has a significant influence on the loyalty of members of sharia cooperatives in Indonesia. This phenomenon is evident in several Islamic cooperatives in Indonesia, reflecting a positive relationship between service quality and member loyalty. The research findings are expected to serve as a guide and consideration for sharia cooperatives and stakeholders in their efforts to retain members and encourage them to continue using the services of sharia cooperatives.
