Airfoil friction drag reduction based on grid-type and super-dense array plasma actuators

To improve the cruise flight performance of aircraft, two new configurations of plasma actuators (grid-type and super-dense array) were investigated to reduce the turbulent skin friction drag of a low-speed airfoil. The induced jet characteristics of the two actuators in quiescent air were diagnosed with high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV), and their drag reduction efficiencies were examined under different operating conditions in a wind tunnel. The results showed that the grid-type plasma actuator was capable of producing a wall-normal jet array (peak magnitude: 1.07 m/s) similar to that generated in a micro-blowing technique, while the super-dense array plasma actuator created a wavy wall-parallel jet (magnitude: 0.94 m/s) due to the discrete spanwise electrostatic forces. Under a comparable electrical power consumption level, the super-dense array plasma actuator array significantly outperformed the grid-type configuration, reducing the total airfoil friction drag by approximately 22% at a free-stream velocity of 20 m/s. The magnitude of drag reduction was proportional to the dimensionless jet velocity ratio (r), and a threshold r = 0.014 existed under which little impact on airfoil drag could be discerned.

Plasma actuator effects on the flow physics of dynamic stall for a vertical axis wind turbine

Darrieus type vertical axis wind turbines have several advantages over other wind turbines for local electricity generation in urban environments. However, the main aerodynamic challenge is the negative impacts of the dynamic stall phenomenon on the turbine performance. This study numerically scrutinizes the effects of plasma actuators on the dynamic stall control and performance improvement of a Darrieus turbine. For this sake, unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes equations are solved using a pressure-based finite volume method. The Suzen–Hoang plasma actuator model is employed to calculate the body forces attributed to the plasma actuator. First, the dynamic stall characteristics of the turbine blade with no plasma actuator are explored. Then, three plasma actuator configurations (i.e., inboard, outboard, and double-sided) are considered. According to the results of the clean blade, the aerodynamic performance mainly depends on the reverse Karman vortex formation at the onset of the down-stroke motion and counterclockwise vortex formation on the blade suction side. The results of plasma configurations indicate that the inboard and double-sided actuators enhance the turbine power output by 10%, while the outboard actuator effects are negligible. Moreover, the plasma actuator is effective only in the down-stroke motion of the blade. Results also show that the inboard and double-sided plasma actuators eliminate the reverse Karman vortex and significantly reduce the counterclockwise vortex size, increasing the lift force and connection point moment. Consequently, the inboard and double-sided plasma actuators remove the negative torque generation in azimuth angles of 135° to 180°, primarily responsible for the output power enhancement.

Input-output framework for actuated boundary layers

This work extends the input-output approach to the study of wall-bounded shear flows manipulated using actuators common in experimental flow control studies. In particular, we adapt this powerful analytical framework to investigate the flow response to specified geometric actuation patterns (e.g., different plasma actuators) that can be applied over a range of different temporal input signals. For example, the commonly studied steady-state (time-averaged) flow response corresponds to a superposition of step responses in our modeling framework. The approach takes advantage of the linearity of the transfer function representation to construct the actuated flow field as a weighted superposition of the flow responses to point sources of varying intensity comprising the actuation model. We first validate the proposed method through comparisons with numerical and experimental studies of the time-averaged behavior of a transitional boundary layer actuated using a dielectric-barrier discharge plasma actuator operating in constricted discharge mode. The method is shown to reproduce the streamwise velocity field and the vortical structures observed downstream from the tested plasma actuator configurations. We then demonstrate that the method provides even better agreement with the steady-state response of the boundary layer subject to actuation from arrays of symmetric plasma actuators arranged in both spanwise and serpentine geometries. These results indicate the utility of this extension to the widely used input-output framework in analyzing the effects of certain actuation modalities that have shown promise in flow manipulation strategies for drag reduction. An important benefit of this analytical method is the low computational cost associated with its use in extensive parametric studies that would be cost-prohibitive using experiments or high-fidelity simulations.

Control of a Turbulent Non-Premixed Flame by Plasma Actuators

A computational study of methane–air combustion with three configurations of plasma actuators placed around the periphery of a coaxial jet combustor is investigated. Plasma actuators are used to impose a local body force near the combustor wall. Three different approximated plasma forces are tested for each configuration. For the baseline case without plasma actuation, results are validated with published numerical and experimental data. At large plasma force, the flame shape becomes narrow for the configuration of the coflow case. For the rest of configurations, the flame is extinguished due to fuel-lean mixtures at large plasma force. For the configuration of the counterflow case, the size of the outer recirculation zone has been increased by increasing the plasma force. However, the large outer recirculation zone may block the airflow path and result in flame extinguishment. For the configuration of the counterclockwise coflow case, the flame shape becomes wider until the plasma force of . Thus, this study predicts different flame structures by using different plasma configurations.

Lean Blowout Sensing and Plasma Actuation of Non-Premixed Flames

The aim of this paper is the use of optical sensors to recognize lean blowout in a non-premixed methane/air burner, Bunsen-type, and the use of plasma actuators for flame control and stabilization. The burner is optically accessible to permit the imaging acquisitions of the flame region. The plasma actuation regards alternatively the air flow and the fuel flow. The electric field is generated using a fixed configuration of plasma actuator and the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) but using two different power supplies: a nanosecond repetitively pulsed high voltage (HV) and a sinusoidal DBD HV. The comparison between the two types of actuation is the core of this paper, together with the analysis of the results obtained when actuation acted on the air or on the fuel. For the analysis, the lean blowout (LBO) limits recorded in the presence and absence of plasma actuation to investigate the plasma actuation success. The flame behavior is acquired using a compact digital camera, an intensified charge-coupled device (CCD) in order to capture the differences between the baseline conditions and the actuated cases. It is shown that the plasma significantly allows stabilizing the flame under lean conditions where it would not exist without plasma.

Experimental Comparison of DBD Plasma Actuators for Low Reynolds Number Separation Control

This paper presents experimental work comparing several Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma actuator configurations for low Reynolds number separation control. Actuators studied here are being investigated for use in a closed loop separation control system. The plasma actuators were fabricated in the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory Propulsion Directorate’s thin film laboratory and applied to a low Reynolds number airfoil that exhibits similar suction surface behavior to those observed on Low Pressure (LP) Turbine blades. In addition to typical asymmetric arrangements producing downstream jets, one electrode configurations was designed to produce an array of off axis jets, and one produced a spanwise array of linear vertical jets in order to generate vorticity and improved boundary layer to freestream mixing. The actuators were installed on an airfoil and their performance compared by flow visualization, surface stress sensitive film (S3F), and drag measurements. The experimental data provides a clear picture of the potential utility of each design. Experiments were carried out at four Reynolds numbers, 1.4 × 105, 1.0 × 105, 6.0 × 104, and 5.0 × 104 at a-1.5 deg angle of attack. Data was taken at the AFRL Propulsion Directorate’s Low Speed Wind Tunnel (LSWT) facility.

Numerical Investigation of Plasma Actuator Configurations for Flow Separation Control at Multiple Angles of Attack

The primary objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of aerodynamic plasma actuators as a means of active flow control over a low speed airfoil at multiple angles of attack each corresponding to two different flow separation mechanisms (i.e., laminar separation bubble and turbulent flow separation at stall conditions). Detailed parametric studies based on steady and unsteady Navier-Stokes simulations were performed for a NACA 0012 airfoil at a chord Reynolds number of 10 5 . In particular, parametric studies were performed to investigate the influence of the number, the location, the imposed body force magnitude and steady vs. unsteady operation of the plasma actuators on the flow control effectiveness. First, the effectiveness of plasma actuators was studied when applied to the airfoil at a relatively low angle of attack, which involved the development of a laminar separation bubble (LSB). Next, the effectiveness of plasma actuators was analyzed at a high angle of attack where the stall of the airfoil occurs with a fully turbulent flow assumption. The results show that plasma actuators can provide significant improvement in aerodynamic performance for the flow conditions and geometry considered in this study. For LSB control, as much as a 50% improvement in the lift to drag ratio was observed. Results also show that the same improvement can be achieved using an unsteady or multiple actuators, which can require as much as 75% less time averaged body force compared to a single, steady actuator. For the stalled airfoil case, significant recovery in aerodynamic performance was observed for a single, steady actuator. However this was achieved using a voltage input eight times higher than what was used for LSB control. For the stall conditions considered in this study, unsteady and multiple actuator configurations do not provide the same enhancement as a single, steady actuator, which may be due to the nature of the flow separation (turbulent, trailing edge separation). The results of both cases show that the optimum location for the effectiveness of a plasma actuator would be just upstream of the separation location, which implies the usefulness of multiple actuator systems for flow control over a range of operating conditions.

Experimental Investigation of the Effects of Various Plasma Actuator Configurations on Lift and Drag Coefficients of a Circular Cylinder Including the Effects of Electrodes

In this paper, the effects of the existence of plasma actuator electrodes and also various configurations of the actuator for controlling the flow field around a circular cylinder are experimentally investigated. The cylinder is made of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) and considered as a dielectric barrier. Two electrodes are flush-mounted on the surface of the cylinder and are connected to a DC high voltage power supply for generation of electrical discharge. Pressure distribution results show that the existence of the electrodes and also the plasma are able to change the pressure distribution around the cylinder and consequently the lift and drag coefficients. It is found that the effect of the existence of the electrodes is comparable with the effect of plasma actuator in controlling the flow field around the cylinder and this effect is not reported by other researchers. Eventually it is concluded that the existence of the electrodes or any extra objects on the cylinder and also the existence of the plasma are capable of changing the flow field structure around the cylinder so that the behavior of the lift and drag coefficients of the cylinder will be changed significantly.
