Reference Energies for Valence Ionizations and Satellite Transitions.

Upon ionization of an atom or a molecule, another electron (or more) can be simultaneously excited. These concurrently generated states are called "satellites" (or shakeup transitions) as they appear in ionization spectra as higher-energy peaks with weaker intensity and larger width than the main peaks associated with single-particle ionizations. Satellites, which correspond to electronically excited states of the cationic species, are notoriously challenging to model using conventional single-reference methods due to their high excitation degree compared to the neutral reference state. This work reports 42 satellite transition energies and 58 valence ionization potentials (IPs) of full configuration interaction quality computed in small molecular systems. Following the protocol developed for the quest database [Véril, M.; Scemama, A.; Caffarel, M.; Lipparini, F.; Boggio-Pasqua, M.; Jacquemin, D.; and Loos, P.-F. Wiley Interdiscip. Rev.: Comput. Mol. Sci. 2021, 11, e1517], these reference energies are computed using the configuration interaction using a perturbative selection made iteratively (CIPSI) method. In addition, the accuracy of the well-known coupled-cluster (CC) hierarchy (CC2, CCSD, CC3, CCSDT, CC4, and CCSDTQ) is gauged against these new accurate references. The performances of various approximations based on many-body Green's functions (GW, GF2, and T-matrix) for IPs are also analyzed. Their limitations in correctly modeling satellite transitions are discussed.

Ground- and Excited-State Dipole Moments and Oscillator Strengths of Full Configuration Interaction Quality

We report ground- and excited-state dipole moments and oscillator strengths (computed in different "gauges" or representations) of full configuration interaction (FCI) quality using the selected configuration interaction method known as Configuration Interaction using a Perturbative Selection made Iteratively (CIPSI). Thanks to a set encompassing 35 ground- and excited-state properties computed in 11 small molecules, the present near-FCI estimates allow us to assess the accuracy of high-order coupled-cluster (CC) calculations including up to quadruple excitations. In particular, we show that incrementing the excitation degree of the CC expansion (from CC with singles and doubles (CCSD) to CC with singles, doubles, and triples (CCSDT) or from CCSDT to CC with singles, doubles, triples, and quadruples (CCSDTQ)) reduces the average error with respect to the near-FCI reference values by approximately 1 order of magnitude.

Toward a systematic improvement of the fixed-node approximation in diffusion Monte Carlo for solids-A case study in diamond.

While Diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) is in principle an exact stochastic method for ab initio electronic structure calculations, in practice, the fermionic sign problem necessitates the use of the fixed-node approximation and trial wavefunctions with approximate nodes (or zeros). This approximation introduces a variational error in the energy that potentially can be tested and systematically improved. Here, we present a computational method that produces trial wavefunctions with systematically improvable nodes for DMC calculations of periodic solids. These trial wavefunctions are efficiently generated with the configuration interaction using a perturbative selection made iteratively (CIPSI) method. A simple protocol in which both exact and approximate results for finite supercells are used to extrapolate to the thermodynamic limit is introduced. This approach is illustrated in the case of the carbon diamond using Slater-Jastrow trial wavefunctions including up to one million Slater determinants. Fixed-node DMC energies obtained with such large expansions are much improved, and the fixed-node error is found to decrease monotonically and smoothly as a function of the number of determinants in the trial wavefunction, a property opening the way to a better control of this error. The cohesive energy extrapolated to the thermodynamic limit is in close agreement with the estimated experimental value. Interestingly, this is also the case at the single-determinant level, thus, indicating a very good error cancellation in carbon diamond between the bulk and atomic total fixed-node energies when using single-determinant nodes.

Taming the fixed-node error in diffusion Monte Carlo via range separation.

By combining density-functional theory (DFT) and wave function theory via the range separation (RS) of the interelectronic Coulomb operator, we obtain accurate fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (FN-DMC) energies with compact multi-determinant trial wave functions. In particular, we combine here short-range exchange-correlation functionals with a flavor of selected configuration interaction known as configuration interaction using a perturbative selection made iteratively (CIPSI), a scheme that we label RS-DFT-CIPSI. One of the take-home messages of the present study is that RS-DFT-CIPSI trial wave functions yield lower fixed-node energies with more compact multi-determinant expansions than CIPSI, especially for small basis sets. Indeed, as the CIPSI component of RS-DFT-CIPSI is relieved from describing the short-range part of the correlation hole around the electron-electron coalescence points, the number of determinants in the trial wave function required to reach a given accuracy is significantly reduced as compared to a conventional CIPSI calculation. Importantly, by performing various numerical experiments, we evidence that the RS-DFT scheme essentially plays the role of a simple Jastrow factor by mimicking short-range correlation effects, hence avoiding the burden of performing a stochastic optimization. Considering the 55 atomization energies of the Gaussian-1 benchmark set of molecules, we show that using a fixed value of μ = 0.5 bohr-1 provides effective error cancellations as well as compact trial wave functions, making the present method a good candidate for the accurate description of large chemical systems.

Systematic comparison and cross-validation of fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo and phaseless auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo in solids

Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods are some of the most accurate methods for simulating correlated electronic systems. We investigate the compatibility, strengths and weaknesses of two such methods, namely, diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) and auxiliary-field quantum Monte Carlo (AFQMC). The multi-determinant trial wave functions employed in both approaches are generated using the configuration interaction using a perturbative selection made iteratively (CIPSI) technique. Complete basis set full configuration interaction (CBS-FCI) energies estimated with CIPSI are used as a reference in this comparative study between DMC and AFQMC. By focusing on a set of canonical finite size solid state systems, we show that both QMC methods can be made to systematically converge towards the same energy once basis set effects and systematic biases have been removed. AFQMC shows a much smaller dependence on the trial wavefunction than DMC while simultaneously exhibiting a much larger basis set dependence. We outline some of the remaining challenges and opportunities for improving these approaches.

Quantum Package 2.0: An Open-Source Determinant-Driven Suite of Programs.

Quantum chemistry is a discipline which relies heavily on very expensive numerical computations. The scaling of correlated wave function methods lies, in their standard implementation, between and , where N is proportional to the system size. Therefore, performing accurate calculations on chemically meaningful systems requires (i) approximations that can lower the computational scaling and (ii) efficient implementations that take advantage of modern massively parallel architectures. Quantum Package is an open-source programming environment for quantum chemistry specially designed for wave function methods. Its main goal is the development of determinant-driven selected configuration interaction (sCI) methods and multireference second-order perturbation theory (PT2). The determinant-driven framework allows the programmer to include any arbitrary set of determinants in the reference space, hence providing greater methodological freedom. The sCI method implemented in Quantum Package is based on the CIPSI (Configuration Interaction using a Perturbative Selection made Iteratively) algorithm which complements the variational sCI energy with a PT2 correction. Additional external plugins have been recently added to perform calculations with multireference coupled cluster theory and range-separated density-functional theory. All the programs are developed with the IRPF90 code generator, which simplifies collaborative work and the development of new features. Quantum Package strives to allow easy implementation and experimentation of new methods, while making parallel computation as simple and efficient as possible on modern supercomputer architectures. Currently, the code enables, routinely, to realize runs on roughly 2 000 CPU cores, with tens of millions of determinants in the reference space. Moreover, we have been able to push up to 12 288 cores in order to test its parallel efficiency. In the present manuscript, we also introduce some key new developments: (i) a renormalized second-order perturbative correction for efficient extrapolation to the full CI limit and (ii) a stochastic version of the CIPSI selection performed simultaneously to the PT2 calculation at no extra cost.

Influence of pseudopotentials on excitation energies from selected configuration interaction and diffusion Monte Carlo

Due to their diverse nature, the faithful description of excited states within electronic structure theory methods remains one of the grand challenges of modern theoretical chemistry. Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods have been applied very successfully to ground state properties but still remain generally less effective than other non-stochastic methods for electronically excited states. Nonetheless, we have recently reported accurate excitation energies for small organic molecules at the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (FN-DMC) within a Jastrow-free QMC protocol relying on a deterministic and systematic construction of nodal surfaces using the selected configuration interaction (sCI) algorithm known as CIPSI (Configuration Interaction using a Perturbative Selection made Iteratively). Albeit highly accurate, these all-electron calculations are computationally expensive due to the presence of core electrons. One very popular approach to remove these chemically-inert electrons from the QMC simulation is to introduce pseudopotentials (also known as effective core potentials). Taking the water molecule as an example, we investigate the influence of Burkatzki-Filippi-Dolg (BFD) pseudopotentials and their associated basis sets on vertical excitation energies obtained with sCI and FN-DMC methods. Although these pseudopotentials are known to be relatively safe for ground state properties, we evidence that special care may be required if one strives for highly accurate vertical transition energies. Indeed, comparing all-electron and valence-only calculations, we show that using pseudopotentials with the associated basis sets can induce differences of the order of 0.05 eV on the excitation energies. Fortunately, a reasonable estimate of this shift can be estimated at the sCI level.

Selected configuration interaction (sCI) methods including second-order perturbative corrections provide near full CI (FCI) quality energies with only a small fraction of the determinants of the FCI space. Here, we introduce both a state-specific and a multi-state sCI method based on the configuration interaction using a perturbative selection made iteratively (CIPSI) algorithm. The present method revises the reference (internal) space under the effect of its interaction with the outer space via the construction of an effective Hamiltonian, following the shifted-Bk philosophy of Davidson and co-workers. In particular, the multi-state algorithm removes the storage bottleneck of the effective Hamiltonian via a low-rank factorization of the dressing matrix. Illustrative examples are reported for the state-specific and multi-state versions.

Deterministic Construction of Nodal Surfaces within Quantum Monte Carlo: The Case of FeS.

In diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) methods, the nodes (or zeroes) of the trial wave function dictate the magnitude of the fixed-node (FN) error. In standard DMC implementations, the nodes are optimized by stochastically optimizing a short multideterminant expansion in the presence of an explicitly correlated Jastrow factor. Here, following a recent proposal, we pursue a different route and consider the nodes of selected configuration interaction (sCI) expansions built with the CIPSI (Configuration Interaction using a Perturbative Selection made Iteratively) algorithm. By increasing the size of the sCI expansion, these nodes can be systematically and deterministically improved. The present methodology is used to investigate the properties of the transition metal sulfide molecule FeS. This apparently simple molecule has been shown to be particularly challenging for electronic structure theory methods due to the proximity of two low-energy quintet electronic states of different spatial symmetry and the difficulty to treat them on equal footing from a one-electron basis set point of view. In particular, we show that, at the triple-ζ basis set level, all sCI results-including those extrapolated at the full CI (FCI) limit-disagree with experiment, yielding an electronic ground state of 5Σ+ symmetry. Performing FN-DMC simulation with sCI nodes, we show that the correct 5Δ ground state is obtained if sufficiently large expansions are used. Moreover, we show that one can systematically get accurate potential energy surfaces and reproduce the experimental dissociation energy as well as other spectroscopic constants.

Accurate nonrelativistic ground-state energies of 3d transition metal atoms.

We present accurate nonrelativistic ground-state energies of the transition metal atoms of the 3d series calculated with Fixed-Node Diffusion Monte Carlo (FN-DMC). Selected multi-determinantal expansions obtained with the CIPSI (Configuration Interaction using a Perturbative Selection made Iteratively) method and including the most prominent determinants of the full configuration interaction expansion are used as trial wavefunctions. Using a maximum of a few tens of thousands determinants, fixed-node errors on total DMC energies are found to be greatly reduced for some atoms with respect to those obtained with Hartree-Fock nodes. To the best of our knowledge, the FN-DMC/(CIPSI nodes) ground-state energies presented here are the lowest variational total energies reported so far. They differ from the recently recommended non-variational values of McCarthy and Thakkar [J. Chem. Phys. 136, 054107 (2012)] only by a few percents of the correlation energy. Thanks to the variational property of FN-DMC total energies, our results provide exact lower bounds for the absolute value of all-electron correlation energies, |Ec|.
