Conceptualizing social support in families of children with special needs

Purpose: Families usually try to organize the family environment and reach out to resources that can meet their child's needs. Successful resource utilization is important for families in dealing with the daily challenges and demands of caring for a child with special needs. In particular, social support influences the successful adaptation of these families. The concept of social support is increasingly being used to understand families and their functioning, and this research contributes to the evolving process of adaptation. Method: This study used systematic literature review design. The article search was carried out from January- March 2022 for the literature on parenting styles for children with special needs. Result: The results mentioned that one or all of the family members experienced adjustments in their work, i.e. shortened working hours, quit their job, or quit their job. The various adjustments that must be made often lead to various disturbances and stress for parents. The stress experienced by parents is also related to the heavy responsibilities of caring for and raising children. Parents' reactions vary. There are parents who cope realistically, resisting, feeling sorry for themselves. When facing significant stressors, families will go through certain processes that allow them to survive and adapt until they can become a harmonious family. Conclusion: This social support can be emotional, assistance, or informational because it can have an effect on children with special needs so that they do not have to worry about their own weaknesses. Children with special needs that they do not feel different from normal children. This shows that one of the family functions is working very well.

Life After News? How an Online Community of Journalists Discuss Stress and Provide Social Support

ABSTRACT Journalists have been leaving the industry in droves due to stress and burnout. This study examines an online community of journalists discussing their “Plan B” to understand what they identify as job stressors, as well as how they, as a community, discuss the health impact of these stressors. Guided by concepts of social support, we attempt to understand the strategies they employ to deal with the stressors. We found that the journalists collectively articulate their hopes and convictions on the functions and future of journalism. Next, they empower one another by providing emotional, informational, instrumental and appraisal support. Lastly, the journalists build their collective competence by discussing the skills and values needed for new beginnings. This study provides insight into how journalists provide community support, as well as how the field can reform the profession and retain journalists at a time where they are needed now, more than ever.

Digital social support among educators in social media: An international comparative study of tweets and replies in #teachertwitter and #twlz

Asking questions on social media acts as a stimulus for professional learning among educators, while the answers can offer them valuable resources. Framed by the concept of digital social support and using a cross-cultural comparative approach, we investigate what type of digital social support educators seek when using educational social media spaces, and what they receive from other users who answer their questions. Analyzing 2,274 tweets and 2,020 replies from two hashtags popular among German and US teachers, #twlz and #teachertwitter, we find that educators mainly seek instrumental support (e.g. materials). Yet what is being sought influences the likelihood of getting the desired response, not the user's characteristics. Differences emerge between the two hashtags in the kinds of support educators seek and the way educators respond to requests. The findings highlight the need for educators to possess digital competencies to fully utilize social media spaces.

Intersectional Social Support: Gender, Race, and LGBTQ Youth Friendships

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) youth experience disproportionate mental health challenges due to minority stress. Little research, however, has considered how social support from intragenerational friends impacts the mental health of LGBTQ youth, particularly for LGBTQ youth of color. Based mainly on qualitative interviews from a longitudinal study with 83 LGBTQ youth from California and Texas, we develop the concept of intersectional social support—how multiply marginalized individuals subjectively interpret social support and how they view social support from similar multiply marginalized others. More specifically, the findings of this study capture how the intersecting identities of age, sexuality, gender, and race can shape the meanings and experiences of receiving familial support, emotional support, informational support, and instrumental support. This study is an important contribution to understanding how intersecting identities influence how people perceive social support practices and manage their mental health.

The Role of Social Support in Improving the Well-Being of the Elderly: A Qualitative Review

This research aims to explore the role of social support in improving the well-being of the elderly through a qualitative review. Social support is identified as a crucial factor influencing the quality of life and happiness of older people in social, emotional and instrumental contexts. Qualitative research methods were used to gain in-depth understanding through in-depth interviews with elderly people and content analysis of related literature. The research results show that family, peers, and community play an important role in providing social support to the elderly. This support not only improves their emotional well-being but also provides practical help in living their daily lives. Seniors who feel strong social support tend to have lower levels of depression, better physical health, and a higher quality of life. Policy suggestions include increasing public awareness about the importance of social support for the elderly, developing community programs that support their social interactions, as well as integrating the concept of social support in public policies related to the welfare of the elderly. It is hoped that this research can make a significant contribution in increasing understanding and approaches to the important role of social support in advancing the welfare of the elderly in society.

A MULTI-PERSPECTIVE VIEW ON THE CONCEPT OF SOCIAL PROTECTION AND THE ROLE OF SOCIAL WORK IN (NOT ONLY) WARTIME CONDITIONS

The purpose of this article is to explore the multifaceted dimensions of the concept of social protection and the role of social work in (not only) wartime conditions. This is necessary, because social workers are often acting “helpless” confronted with massive global crises or even wars or war-like conditions. This article tries to sharpen the possible role and position of social work and with this the expectations on the discipline and profession of social work. To reach this, this article wants to shed light on the subject and the understanding of “crisis” and the different perspectives surrounding the interdisciplinary and multi perspective concepts of social protection, social support, and resilience. This perspective allows to a better understanding of the underlying principles, challenges and potential solutions related to social protection in times of crisis. In times of crisis, ensuring social protection and social support becomes an urgent priority for affected populations and even individuals. Social protection encompasses a wide range of measures designed to protect individuals and communities from the adverse effects of crises and to provide them with the necessary resources and assistance to cope with the challenges they face. This article is on the one side a s theoretical examination of the key terms. On the other hand directly affected people have their say: The co-author as a Ukrainian narrates her migration experiences and the results of a student - peer project with affected refugees from Ukraine in Eastern Switzerland are presented. The results are concrete and surprise at some points and sharpen the task and role of social work: First, feeling safe and getting (social) support and psychological assistance in the trauma and war situation is much important even to feel welcome and resurrected. But then mobility, networks, and the change to support their families, relatives and friends at home have a great importance. It is also very important to be able to travel to Ukraine (home) from time to time and to be able to return to the host country. The task of social work is a very special one: It is not primarily the role of the benefactor and care giver, but of the professional who makes things possible and supports and empowers the people who feel it. The article also makes clear, that a one-dimensional and static understanding of crisis, flight, migration and needs no longer works in today's world global situations and crisis. Self-Management Social Support in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Concept Analysis

Aims. The aim of this concept analysis was to clarify the conceptual characteristics, antecedents, consequences, definition, and proper use of self-management social support in the context of type 2 diabetes. Background. Self-management social support has been found to be positively correlated with improved patient outcomes and a reduced occurrence of type 2 diabetes complications. In the context of type 2 diabetes, there is no uniform definition of the concept of self-management social support. In addition, the attributes of the concept and the antecedents, as well as the outcome consequences, should be identified. Design. A concept analysis. Methods. Walker and Avant’s (2019) framework for concept analysis. Results. Self-management social support could be defined as the presence of a supportive social network that exhibits supportive reinforcing behaviors that could facilitate positive behavioral change and promote disease self-management that leads to improved biobehavioral and psychosocial outcomes for patients. Conclusions. The findings suggest that self-management social support promotes self-efficacy, self-competence, and self-confidence in the self-management of type 2 diabetes. Patient characteristics, attributes of social support sources, patient-caregiver relationships, and disease severity should be taken into consideration when studying the relationship between social support and patients’ outcomes. Effective social support will lead to improvements in the biological, psychological, and social well-being of type 2 diabetes patients. Self-management social support should be preceded by the formulation of a supportive network that provides patients with active reinforcement. Implications. Self-management social support can promote self-efficacy, self-competence, and self-confidence in the self-management of type 2 diabetes and thereby improve health outcomes among type 2 diabetes patients.

Social support for nursing students: A concept analysis study

ObjectivesThis study aimed to analyze the concept of social support in nursing students. DesignA concept analysis method was used. Data sourcesArticles on concept analysis, published from 2000 to 2022, were examined. Science Direct, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, and Google Scholar were searched to identify international articles, and Research Information Sharing Service, Korean Studies Information Service System, and Database periodical information academic were searched to identify Korean articles. In total, 27 articles were examined. ResultsThe following attributes of social support were found: 1) structural (social integration and social support network); 2) educational (academic support and support of a role model); 3) psychosocial (emotional, positive appraisal, and self-esteem supports); and 4) instrumental (informational and material supports). Furthermore, social support was found to have the following antecedents: 1) stress and crisis, 2) personal need, 3) social network, and 4) social climate. The consequences of social support were as follows: 1) improved mental health and 2) quality of life. ConclusionsSocial support among nursing students includes both structural and functional attributes. Structural attributes are social integration and support networks, and functional attributes are educational, psychosocial, and instrumental. Based on the results, we recommend developing a tool to measure social support for nursing students in the future.

Risk Factors of Demoralization Among Lung Cancer Patients in Mainland China.

Objectives: Due to the severity of cancer, patients may experience feelings of helplessness and despair, resulting in demoralization among lung cancer patients. In this study, we investigated the risk factors of demoralization in middle-aged and older Chinese lung cancer patients via their relationship with patients' demographic data and disease characteristics. Methods: This study is a cross-sectional descriptive study using a structured questionnaire including assessments of demographic data and disease, the Demoralization Scale Mandarin Version (DS-MV), the Social Support Rate Scale (SSRS), the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ), as well as The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC QLQ-C30). Results: Overall, 289/300 (96.3%) patients with lung cancer completed questionnaires. The mean score of DS-MV was 49.27 (SD=15.19) (range, 21-81) and the mean score of SSRS was 33.37 (SD=5.43) (range,17-48). Multiple linear regression analysis identified high demoralization was significantly related to age (p<.001), medical payment (p=.003), times of chemotherapy (p=.026), family monthly income (p=.025), avoidance dimension (p<.001), surrender dimension (p<.001), social support (p=.001), symptom score (p<.001), overall health score (p=.009) and function score (p<.001). Conclusion: This study demonstrates the factors influencing demoralization among middle-aged and older lung cancer patients. Demoralization is a prevalent psychiatric problem in Chinese lung cancer patients. Therefore, we recommend strong social support to be protective against demoralization. We suggest that medical staff establish the concept of social support for patients with lung cancer, actively seek effective resources from family, friends, and other social support organizations to help patients establish a social support system that improves patient courage and confidence in their post-cancer life.

The bright and dark sides of social media use during COVID-19 lockdown: Contrasting social media effects through social liability vs. social support

There exist ongoing discussions regarding whether, when, or why heightened reliance on social media becomes benefits or drawbacks, especially in times of crisis. Using the concepts of social liability, social support, and cognitive appraisal theory, this study examines distinct theoretical pathways through which the relational use of social media has contrasting impacts on cognitive appraisals of and emotional responses to the COVID-19 lockdown. We collected online survey data from 494 social media users in the U.S. during the COVID-19 lockdown. The results based on structural equation modeling (SEM) showed double-edged social media effects. When social media use results in perceived social support, it has a favorable impact on coping appraisals of the COVID-19 lockdown. This, in turn, is associated with lower levels of negative affective responses, such as anger, anxiety, and loneliness. In contrast, when social media use results in increased social liability (i.e., obligation to provide support to others), it negatively impacts cognitive appraisals and affective responses. The study makes significant contributions by unpacking two distinct theoretical mechanisms underlying social media effects: particularly social liability which has been underexplored but was found to be an essential concept to explain the dualistic impact of social media.

Social protection of motherhood and childhood in the regions of the south of Western Siberia in the 1990s.

The article is devoted to the study of the processes of social support for motherhood and childhood in the Russian Federation, in general, and in the regions of Southwestern Siberia during one of the problematic periods of social protection — in the 90s of the twentieth century. In the context of the crisis of financing social payments, the most important task is to develop an effective concept of social support for vulnerable segments of the population. The analysis of statistical data confirming the relevance of the demographic crisis in Russian society is presented. In particular, the materials of the State Archives of the subjects of the south of Western Siberia are considered: the Altai Republic, Omsk, Novosibirsk and Kemerovo regions, the Altai territory. The basic normative acts adopted in the 1990s regulating the mechanisms of social security for families with children in our country are characterized. The logical result of the study was the conclusion that the systematic indexation of material payments is mandatory in proportion to the increase in consumer prices for essential goods. The provision of preferential loans for the purchase of housing; budget financing of summer holidays for children from poor and large families; an increase in the volume of free services for children and mothers in medical institutions is clearly not enough to overcome the difficulties that have arisen. Overcoming the crisis phenomena is seen in attempts to balance the social system of the Russian Federation relative to the real socio-economic level of the country.

Regulatory and legal aspects of social support for multiple-child families: regional experience

The priority direction of the state family and demographic policy is the social support of multiple-child families. This article clarifies the essence and specifies the concept of social support in accordance with regulatory documents. The distinctive features of support as a technology of social work are determined. The analysis of the regulatory framework at the federal and regional levels in the organization of social support for multiple-child families is carried out. The features of the practical implementation of the regulatory framework in a number of regions of Russia are formulated. The approved form of the passport of social support and intradepartmental interaction on social support is presented on the example of the Ulyanovsk Region. The algorithm of providing social support to multiple-child families in the conditions of a general education organization is described. The mechanism of implementation of the technology of social support in modern conditions of socio-economic crisis is substantiated.

“I’ve never experienced this before, I don’t know what I need”– a qualitative study on social support and self-care during the first year after an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage

Purpose To describe perceived support, support needs and self-care among individuals during the first year after an aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Material and methods The study had a qualitative descriptive design with a deductive approach using the concepts of social support and self-care. The informants (n = 16) had been treated for aSAH at a university hospital in Sweden and were interviewed one year after the event. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and a manifest directed content analysis was performed. Results The findings revealed great variation in the narratives, both regarding the support received and the support desired, as well as the described self-care abilities. All codes were covered by the predefined categories and subcategories: social support (including esteem/emotional support, informational support, social companionship, instrumental support) and self-care (including self-management, self-monitoring, symptom management, self-efficacy). Conclusions Not being offered the support needed aggravated the possibility to manage the new life after aSAH. The confidence in self-care abilities was influenced by symptom control and how much life had changed in comparison to before the aSAH. Educational efforts are suggested to facilitate the transition from hospital discharge and to promote specialized rehabilitation at home and self-care abilities.

MODEL OF MULTIDIMENSIONAL SOCIAL SUPPORT OF LIFE ACTIVITIES OF ELDERLY PEOPLE IN GERONTOLOGICAL CENTERS

Geriatric care plays an important role in promoting health and solving complex socio-psychological problems of older people. Its recipients are a particularly vulnerable category of citizens who need comprehensive professional support that ensures daily social activity, communication and, as a result, a proper quality of life. Nevertheless, real experience shows that the principles of working with older people are still not fully declared, are of a limited nature, especially in those countries where gerontology as a scienti™c discipline is still under development. In accordance with the traditional model of geriatric care, adopted as a basis in modern Russia, care for the elderly is carried out, primarily based on their «main complaint». is article aims to form a holistic view of the role of geriatric centers in providing social support for the life of the elderly, to summarize the main aspects and principles of providing geriatric care, considering its multidimensional nature, based on the systematization of the experience of several foreign countries. e proposed structure of the model of multidimensional social support for the life of the elderly living in geriatric centers consists of the following blocks: social networks; social exchange; social activity (involvement); social capital. e theoretical underpinning of the proposed model is potentially useful for guiding future practice, research, and policy in this area. e social environment that can be built through the implementation of these four blocks can become one of the most important and most valuable tools in ensuring the comprehensive social and psychological well-being of older people. is study was aimed primarily at ™lling a gap in the Russian scienti™c literature, helping to comprehend the concept and model of social support for the elderly in the setting of geriatric centers. Abstract The pandemic highlighted new and old health risks that require health actions and social support. This study analyzed the knowledge of health professionals working in primary health care centers (PHCCs) regarding civil society and health service separately or along with health promotion and social support initiatives targeting vulnerable groups. The article begins by discussing the concept of social support and then goes on to present an analysis of empirical data from the multidimensional cross-sectional study “Challenges facing primary health care in the response to COVID-19 in the SUS”, conducted using a nationally representative sample of PHCCs. Scores were calculated for selected and aggregated variables, and we calculated percentages for selected actions together with 95% confidence intervals at national and regional level. The percentage of PHCCs that supported actions and where the local community developed initiatives in the catchment area varied across regions, with rates being significantly higher in the Northeast and in non-urban municipalities with low MHDI, which was associated with actions developed in the catchment area by community health workers. The findings reveal several gaps and challenges, including the need to amplify the magnitude and scope of intra and intersectoral actions, strengthen ties between different actors, reverse the effects of the pandemic on health inequities and promote further research.

Responsive social support serves important functions in clinical communication: Translating perspectives from relationship science to improve cancer clinical interactions

Patient-clinician interactions are critical to patient-centered care, including in cancer care contexts which are often defined by multiple patient-clinician interactions over an extended period. Research on these dyadic interactions has been guided by perspectives in clinical communication science, but the study of clinical communication has not been fully integrated with perspectives on interpersonal interactions from relationship science research. An overlapping concept in both fields is the concept of responsive socialsupport. In this article, we discuss responsiveness as a concept that offers opportunities for connections between these two disciplines. Next, we focus on how relationship science can be applied to research in clinical settings. We discuss how three areas of relationship science define responsiveness and have potential for extension to clinical communication: (1) (in)visibility of social support, (2) attachment orientations, and (3) shared meaning systems. We also discuss how social biases can impede responsiveness and suggest research avenues to develop ideas and understand potential challenges in connecting these two fields. Many opportunities exist for interdisciplinary theory development that can generate momentum in understanding interpersonal processes in cancer care.

The article covers the European experience of child security in the XVII – XXI centuries. The theoretical basis of the research is the work of scientists on the problems of child security and their rights in European countries. The work is based on the concept of social transformations, social support and social care of children. Historical-comparative, historical-genetic and historical-typological methods of research have been applied. Theoretical analysis of the problem has made it possible to draw analogies to the historical experience of the child welfare system, which is important for European countries in the context of developing their own social protection system.

Developing a Conceptual Disease Model of Patient Experiences and Identifying Patient-Reported Clinical Outcome Assessments for Use in Trials of Treatments for Focal Onset Seizures.

PurposeTo identify concepts important to understanding the experiences of adults with focal onset seizures (FOS) and evaluate clinical outcome assessments (COAs) for measuring these concepts in clinical trials of treatments for FOS.MethodsA search of published qualitative research, clinical trials, and approved product labels for FOS treatments was performed to develop a conceptual disease model (CDM) of patients’ experience of living with FOS. Concepts of interest (COI) were selected, and a second literature search was conducted to identify COAs measuring these concepts. Ten COAs were selected and reviewed to document their development process, evidence of measurement properties, and methods for interpreting change scores using criteria proposed in regulatory guidelines for patient-reported outcomes to support label claims.ResultsConcepts identified from the published literature (13 articles, 1 conference abstract), 24 clinical trials, and 8 product labels were included in a novel CDM. Impacts on physical, cognitive, and social and emotional function were chosen as COI for evaluating treatment outcomes for FOS; the additional concept of social support and coping strategies was chosen to understand patients’ lived experiences. From 51 unique COAs identified, 10 were selected based on their potential coverage of the COI; some symptom severity and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) COAs covered multiple COI. Of these 10, 8 COAs evaluated impacts/limitations on physical function, 8 measured social and emotional impacts, and 5 assessed social support and coping strategies. While most assessments had gaps in evidence validating their measurement properties, 2 COAs measuring symptom severity and 1 COA measuring HRQoL had evidence confirming their potential utility in clinical trials to support label claims.ConclusionThis research provides insights into the experience of patients with FOS and identifies COAs that measure concepts considered to support endpoints in clinical trials for FOS.

Spanish LGBTQ+ Youth and the Role of Online Networks During the First Wave of Covid‐19

During the lockdown measures put in place at the time of the first wave of the Covid‐19 pandemic in Spain (March through June 2020), LGBTQ+ youth lived through a particularly stressful situation that has so far received little attention. Confined in homes that are often hostile to their sexuality, struggling with the transition to online classes, they reached out to Internet social networks to obtain the support most of them lack in person. This article explores the role of technology for LGBTQ+ youth during a period when the educational environment was not supportive of students’ sexuality and identity needs. The research assesses correlations between the use of online social networks and the perceptions of support received from others (using the concepts of social support, thwarted belongingness and burdensomeness, and cohabitation in their homes). The study involves a sample of 445 Spanish participants aged 13 to 21. A descriptive multivariate analysis of variance and bivariate correlations was performed. We found that social networks were very important for LGBTQ+ youth during the pandemic, helping them to explore their identities, but could also be a source of violence. In this regard, while trans and nonbinary youth’s use of social networks to contact acquaintances show important differences when compared to that of gays, lesbians, and bisexuals, the former group also experiences more violence coming from these networks, finds less social support through them, and feels a stronger sense of burdensomeness in relation to them. Additionally, they were often living with people other than family members during the lockdown. This data suggests the need to offer specific support and online services for LGBTQ+ youth, particularly for trans and nonbinary youth.
