Information Granule Based Uncertainty Measure of Fuzzy Evidential Distribution

Quantifying the uncertainty of information distributions containing randomness, imprecision and fuzziness is the premise of processing them. A useful information representation in the field of intelligent computing is the information granule, which optimizes data from the perspective of specificity and coverage. We introduce information granularity into evidential information and model the Basic Probability Assignment (BPA) as a weighted information granules model. Based on the proposed model, a new uncertainty measure of BPA is derived from the quality evaluation of granules. In addition, the proposed measure is extended to fuzzy evidential information distributions. When the Fuzzy BPA (FBPA) degenerates into the Probability Mass Function (ProbMF) and Possibility Mass Function (PossMF), the proposed method degenerates to Gini entropy and Yager's specificity measure, respectively. We use a refined belief structure to interpret the meaning of FBPA in the transfer belief model, and verify the validity of the proposed method by properties analysis and numerical examples. The concept of information granule is used for the first time to model focal set and beliefs. Compared with Shannon entropy-based information measures, the proposed method provides a novel perspective on the relationship between randomness, imprecision, and fuzziness in FBPA.

Aggregation of Classifiers: A Justifiable Information Granularity Approach.

In this paper, we introduced a new approach of combining multiple classifiers in a heterogeneous ensemble system. Instead of using numerical membership values when combining, we constructed interval membership values for each class prediction from the meta-data of observation by using the concept of information granule. In the proposed method, the uncertainty (diversity) of the predictions produced by the base classifiers is quantified by the interval-based information granules. The decision model is then generated by considering both bound and length of the intervals. Extensive experimentation using the UCI datasets has demonstrated the superior performance of our algorithm over other algorithms including six fixed combining methods, one trainable combining method, AdaBoost, bagging, and random subspace.

Fuzzification of attribute information granules and its formal reasoning model

The model of attribute information granule based on the method of attribute theory and the problem of fuzzification of attribute information granules are discussed. The concept of information granule given by Zadeh can be explained with an attribute and its qualitative mapping operator. Finally, this study also discusses the reasoning of granulation form of attribute fuzzification information which is based on the fuzzy Petri net, with the good formalisation structure of fuzzy Petri net, as well as its asynchronous, concurrency, uncertainty, and other characteristics which is similar to those of human cognitive activities, enabling the fuzzy Petri net to express the basic characteristics of a cognitive system in the form of computing attribute granules. The results of this study can provide a reference for the establishment of the granular logic model in the uncertain problems and a new interpretation framework for revealing the inherent laws of knowledge uncertainty's change with knowledge granularity, and also provides another new possible approach to the establishment of the machine learning model of fuzzy Petri net.

Structural and parametric design of fuzzy inference systems using hierarchical fair competition-based parallel genetic algorithms and information granulation

In this paper, we develop a design methodology for information granulation-based genetically optimized fuzzy inference system, which deals with the tuning method with a variant identification ratio for structural as well as parametric optimization of the reasoning system. The tuning is carried out with the aid of the hierarchical fair competition-based parallel genetic algorithms and it employs the mechanism of information granulation. This version of the genetic algorithm is a multi-population variant of parallel genetic algorithms, which is particularly suitable for handling multimodal problems of high-dimensionality. The granulation of information is realized with the aid of the C-Means clustering algorithm. The concept of information granulation is applied to the formation of the fuzzy inference system in order to realize its structural optimization. Here we divide the input space in order to construct the premise part of the fuzzy rules. Subsequently the consequence part of each fuzzy rule is organized based on the center points (prototypes) of data group obtained as a result of clustering. In particular, this concerns the fuzzy inference system-related parameters, i.e., the number of input variables to be used in the fuzzy inference system, a collection of a specific subset of input variables, the number of membership functions used for each input variable, and the polynomial type (order) occurring at the consequence part of fuzzy rules. Making use of a mechanism of simultaneous tuning for the parameters, we construct an optimized fuzzy inference system related to its structural as well as parametric optimization. A comparative analysis demonstrates that the proposed methodology leads to improved results when compared with some conventional methods exploited in fuzzy modeling.

Optimization of Fuzzy Set-Fuzzy Systems based on IG by Means of GAs with Successive Tuning Method

We introduce an optimization of fuzzy set-fuzzy systems based on IG (Information Granules). The proposed fuzzy model implements system structure and parameter identification by means of IG and GAs. The concept of information granulation was coped with to enhance the abilities of structural optimization of the fuzzy model. Granulation of information realized with C-Means clustering helps determine the initial parameters of the fuzzy model such as the initial apexes of the membership functions in the premise part and the initial values of polynomial functions in the consequence part of the fuzzy rules. The initial parameters are adjusted effectively with the help of the GAs and the standard least square method. To optimally identify the structure and the parameters of the fuzzy model we exploit GAs with successive tuning method to simultaneously search the structure and the parameters within one individual. We also consider the variant generation-based evolution to adjust the rate of identification of the structure and the parameters in successive tuning method. The proposed model is evaluated with the performance of the conventional fuzzy model.

Structural developments of fuzzy systems with the aid of information granulation

We introduce a design procedure for fuzzy systems using the concept of information granulation and genetic optimization. Information granulation and resulting information granules themselves become an important design aspect of fuzzy models. By accommodating the formalism of fuzzy sets, the model is geared towards capturing relationship between information granules (fuzzy sets) rather than concentrating on plain numeric data. Information granulation realized with the use of the standard C-Means clustering helps determine the initial values of the parameters of the fuzzy models. This in particular concerns such essential components of the rules as the initial apexes of the membership functions standing in the premise part of the fuzzy rules and the initial values of the polynomial functions standing in the consequence part. The initial parameters are afterwards tuned with the aid of the genetic algorithms (GAs) and the least square method (LSM). The overall design methodology arises as a hybrid development process involving structural and parametric optimization. Especially, genetic algorithms and C-Means are used to generate the structurally as well as parametrically optimized fuzzy model. To identify the structure and estimate parameters of the fuzzy model we exploit the methodologies such as joint and successive method realized by means of genetic algorithms. The proposed model is evaluated using experimental data and its performance is contrasted with the behavior of the fuzzy models available in the literature.
