Critical care nurses’ experiences on environmental sustainability: A qualitative content analysis

BackgroundIntensive care units (ICUs) are the primary producers of greenhouse gas emissions within hospitals, due to the use of several invasive materials. Nurses represent a large portion of the healthcare workforce and can be pivotal in promoting sustainability practices. Several international reports have suggested that nursing can help achieve the sustainable development objectives set by the United Nations. AimsThe purpose is to explore behaviour related to environmental sustainability in intensive care nurses. Study designA qualitative content analysis comprised of in-depth interviews involving 27 ICU nurses, who were each asked the same open-ended question. The transcripts collected were then analyzed and organized by a team of independently-working researchers. The analysis of the extrapolated concepts was carried out following the Neem M. (2022) method. The study is supported by a grant from the Centre of Excellence for Nursing Scholarship, Rome, July 2024. FindingsThe main recurring themes are as follows: (1) concepts of environmental sustainability in ICUs, (2) critical issues related to sustainable intervention in the ICUs (3) proactive environmental sustainability attitudes in ICUs. Time to know, define criticality, and improve is the conceptualization of sustainable behaviors experienced by ICU nurses. ConclusionsTaking the time to know and define the critical issues for implementing sustainable behaviours in the ICU, turned out to be the key to enforce the mindset of green nursing thinking. Implications to clinical practiceSustainability behaviours need to be proposed and verified by ICU managers by creating sustainability teams and promoting a good working environment, founding the progression to green ICUs by focusing on health impact education and mindfulness.

Beyond table manners: Children’s gratitude for food and the role of parental socialization

This investigation explores children’s food gratitude and parents’ socialization of this gratitude within the United States. Study 1 examined children’s spontaneous expressions of gratitude (N = 1,441), focusing on the concepts of food environmental sustainability, properties, origins, scripts, and well-being. Study 2 surveyed parents (N = 110) regarding their engagement in socialization practices that promote children’s food gratitude: conversations; modeling; niche selection; and, scaffolding. The results unveil nuances in younger and older children’s gratitude for food concepts as well as parents’ differential use of food gratitude socialization practices and emphasis on specific concepts. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that parents’ food gratitude socialization practices predict parents’ reports of their children’s food gratitude. These studies elucidate variability in children’s gratitude for food and parents’ contribution to its development within this domain. These findings have implications for food gratitude socialization. (137 words)

Flame Retardancy and Thermal Stability of Rigid Polyurethane Foams Filled with Walnut Shells and Mineral Fillers.

Recently, the influence of the concept of environmental sustainability has increased, which includes environmentally friendly measures related to reducing the consumption of petrochemical fuels and converting post-production feedstocks into raw materials for the synthesis of polymeric materials, the addition of which would improve the performance of the final product. In this regard, the development of bio-based polyurethane foams can be carried out by, among other things, modifying polyurethane foams with vegetable or waste fillers. This paper investigates the possibility of using walnut shells (WS) and the mineral fillers vermiculite (V) and perlite (P) as a flame retardant to increase fire safety and thermal stability at higher temperatures. The effects of the fillers in amounts of 10 wt.% on selected properties of the polyurethane composites, such as rheological properties (dynamic viscosity and processing times), mechanical properties (compressive strength, flexural strength, and hardness), insulating properties (thermal conductivity), and flame retardant properties (e.g., ignition time, limiting oxygen index, and peak heat release) were investigated. It has been shown that polyurethane foams containing fillers have better performance properties compared to unmodified polyurethane foams.

A Systematic Literature Review of Existing Methods and Tools for the Criticality Assessment of Raw Materials: A Focus on the Relations between the Concepts of Criticality and Environmental Sustainability

Critical raw materials have significant economic and social impacts across numerous sectors. Numerous artifacts have been developed to assess their criticality. However, there is no univocity around the factors determining criticality. A systematic literature review was conducted to consider all academic works and official reports on criticality assessment. The review aimed to classify these artifacts to provide a clear picture of the heterogenous literature, with a focus on the relationship between criticality and environmental sustainability. Works proposing or updating criticality assessment artifacts were included according to the eligibility criteria. Academic sources were drawn from the Scopus Database in 2023. Official reports included those considered seminal by academic literature. The risk of bias in the selection and classification of the 162 works was low, as the review sought to be comprehensive. The included artifacts are systematically classified. A mapping of the identified criticality assessment tools and methods has been developed. The review found that while environmental impacts are considered in several works, the theoretical connection between criticality and environmental sustainability is weak. Three perspectives on this relationship are identified and discussed. The main limitation of this study is the inability to analyze undisclosed artifacts. The Effect of Service Encounters at Airports on Visitors' Behavior within the Scope of Social and Environmental Sustainability

The aviation industry, and more specifically airport management and airport marketing, has continuously evolved and progressed from the past to the present. Contrary to what happened in the past, the importance of airport marketing, which has been kept in the background until today, has started to be better understood by managers every day. The fact that resources are scarce and needs are unlimited has made concepts such as sustainability and green marketing become the focal point. For this purpose, a hybrid scale was developed by utilizing scales that were used in different studies at different times, consisting of factors that are closely related to social, environmental sustainability and green marketing concepts such as green image, green trust, green customer satisfaction and green word-of-mouth communication. Within the scope of the research, the data collected from the participants with the questionnaire method were analyzed and interpreted with the relevant factors. A 5-point Likert-type scale was used in the questionnaire. The surveys were conducted face-to-face. As a result of the analyses performed with this hybrid model, it was determined that the model fit values remained within the required values. Since different levels of factor loadings were obtained as a result of the analyzes, the explanation of the relationships between the factors was realized at different levels. A Structural Equation Model was created in the light of the data collected within the scope of the study. The results obtained through this model contribute to the examination and interpretation of the effects of service encounters at airports on the behavior of passengers or visitors within the scope of social and environmental sustainability. At the same time, by focusing on which factors should be at the forefront of airport management and airport green marketing activities, it is very important to eliminate the deficiencies, to reveal the aspects that need to be developed, to question the validity of the rules that apply in basic marketing activities in this application and to determine whether the mentioned factors are valid in practice.

Re-echoing Afro socio-environmental sustainability philosophies: the purview of Ubuntu re-imagined through Adinkra symbols

ABSTRACT This paper argues that the concept of social and environmental sustainability is not a new philosophy in African cultures and can easily be practiced among Africans based on a better appreciation of their indigenous philosophies. It attempts to explore how the Ubuntu philosophy of humanness manifests in the Adinkra symbols to give an in-depth understanding, which shows how African societies share commonality in their concepts and to establish that African indigenous philosophies mirror strongly social and environmental sustainability dimensions of the Sustainable Development Goals. It further attempts to show a purview of Ubuntu extended that illustrates that social and environmental sustainability is inseparable in African philosophies. By method, the research purposefully selected six (6) Adinkra symbols and discursively analysed how they explain the Ubuntu Philosophy and their link to socio-environmental sustainability. From the findings, Adinkra symbols reflected the Ubuntu’s common values, which are compassion, mutuality and solidarity, and metaphorically showed their connection to socio-environmental sustainability and thus creates agency and deep appreciation for acting on the Sustainable Development Goals.

Environmental Sustainability in Public Procurement Processes: A Study Guided by The Paradigms of The New Law on Tenders and Contracts

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the incorporation of environmental sustainability criteria in public procurement processes, aiming to assess the impact of these criteria on the effectiveness of procurements under the New Public Procurement and Contracting Law. Theoretical Framework: The research is based on concepts of environmental sustainability and sustainable public procurement. Theories of sustainable development and principles of sustainability in public administration are highlighted, providing a solid foundation for the analysis. Method: The methodology adopted for this research includes a qualitative approach, using the deductive method. Data collection was conducted through a critical analysis of bibliographic materials indexed on platforms evaluated by Capes, as well as legislative documents and relevant doctrines on the subject. Results and Discussion: The results indicate that the New Public Procurement and Contracting Law presents significant advances in integrating sustainability into public procurement processes through the explicit inclusion of environmental sustainability criteria. However, the effective implementation of these criteria faces important challenges, mainly related to the training of public agents and the adaptation of existing structures to new demands. The discussion contextualizes these results in light of the theoretical framework, highlighting the identified implications and relationships. Research Implications: The practical and theoretical implications of this research are discussed, providing insights into how the results can be applied or influence practices in the field of public procurement. These implications encompass areas such as public policies, professional training, and sustainable development. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the literature by highlighting the relevance of the New Public Procurement and Contracting Law in promoting sustainable practices in public procurement. The originality of the research lies in the critical analysis of the challenges and advances provided by the new legislation, highlighting its potential impact on sustainable development.

Energy Efficiency Analysis: Aslanhane (Ahi Şerafettin) Mosque

Humanity has experienced many changes and developments throughout history. These developments have emerged to increase the comfort of people in social life. With each development, new requirements emerged, and the necessity to continue them was the natural result. One of these is the Industrial Revolution which is the crucial trigger and the results affecting our day of technological developments. With this, the concept of energy and its sustainability has been discussed. Although energy has always been the most important need of people, with this revolution, there has been concern about the continuity of the living environment. Although the concept of environmental sustainability was introduced to the literature in the 1980s, the examples, where the idea has been applied are seen throughout history. Ankara Aslanhane (Ahi Şerafettin) mosque is one of them and was built in the 13th century. It has important features that come from the structural material and architectural details for the period it was built in terms of energy efficiency and management. This article aims to analyze the structural features of the Aslanhane (Ahi Şerafettin) mosque and to discuss what can be done to integrate contemporary technologies according to its requirements.

Towards a greener tomorrow: What role does fiscal policy play in fostering environmental sustainability in Pakistan?

AbstractThe concept of environmental sustainability has become a significant concern in the last several decades. The degradation of the environment has significant implications for human well‐being, subsequently affecting productivity and economic growth. Consequently, achieving the goal of environmental sustainability emerges as a primary objective. The goal of this study is to develop an Environmental Sustainability Index that specifically targets factors related to air, land, and water. The second goal is to assess the short‐ and long‐term impacts of fiscal policies on the environmental sustainability. The asymmetric influence of fiscal measures on sustainability is assumed in the present investigation. A time series data for the period 1974–2020 are used for the analysis. For the estimation of asymmetric effects, the Nonlinear Autoregressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) technique is applied. Based on the research findings, it can be concluded that subsidy and developmental expenditures have a detrimental effect on environmental sustainability in the presence of positive shocks. Conversely, a negative shock in subsidies does not yield a significant impact, whereas a negative shock in development expenditures has a noteworthy and adverse influence on environmental sustainability. In the short run, the positive shock to both subsidy and developmental expenditures significantly affects environmental sustainability while the negative shock to developmental expenditure has an insignificant impact while subsidy has a significant effect on environmental sustainability. The study suggests that while making fiscal policies, the government should consider the environmental aspects of these measures.

Sustainable development in ASEAN: The role of trade diversification, government revenue, and natural resources

AbstractOver the past few years, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has experienced great economic expansion, which has resulted in varied degrees of diversified commerce, an elevated level of government revenue, and an increase in the demand for energy. The purpose of this study is to provide a solution to this conundrum by analyzing the effects of trade diversification (TDF), government revenues (GRN), gross domestic product (GDP), and natural resource rent (NTR) on the sustainable development of the ASEAN countries between the years 1981 and 2022. In order to accurately portray the concept of environmental sustainability, the ecological footprint (EFP) is utilized to represent sustainable development. The quantile‐based econometrics technique known as the Method of the Moments Quantile Regression (MMQR) has been utilized in order to investigate the direction and amplitude of the asymmetric correlation that exists between the interaction of GRN, TDF, NTR, and EFP. According to the estimations of the MMQR, it is proposed that government revenues, which include significant financial incentives that promote the stringent execution of environmental rules, hence avoiding deleterious impacts on the environment, have negative coefficients at all quantiles (Q0.25 − Q0.90). Conversely, TDF and GDP have a positive and statistically strong significant correlation across all quantiles (Q0.25 − Q0.90), revealing that TDF reduces environmental sustainability and expands the size of the world's EFP by making energy‐intensive products more accessible. In addition, the Augmented Mean Group (AMG) and the Common Correlated Effect Mean Group (CCEMG) both provide evidence that supports the correlation study by demonstrating that there is a similar pattern of causality across variables.

The tourism and hospitality sector are operating in an increasingly competitive environment. Despite the industry’s magnitude and intricacy, numerous branches are presently interconnected through technological means. Presently, individuals are capable of simultaneously reserving hotel accommodations, airline tickets, rental vehicles, and excursions via computer systems. When utilized in moderation, this expansion generates economic expansion, employment increases, social progress, and the preservation of natural resources. The hotel industry is increasingly inclined towards digital transformations due to the growing digital demand, ubiquitous connectivity, and the emerging paradigm of tourism. The objective of this research paper is to recognize, evaluate, and describe forthcoming trends that have been observed thus far in the domain of hospitality and tourism. By providing supplementary contributions to the domain of technological utilization in the hospitality and tourism sector, it establishes a solid foundation of knowledge. Additionally, the concept of environmental sustainability as it pertains to the hospitality sector is investigated in this study. Prior to the recent past, the hospitality and tourism sector exhibited a relatively low level of concern regarding the environmental impact caused by its facilities and operations. As environmental degradation worsens, societies are recognizing the critical need to enforce and implement more efficient environmental management practices. The observed phenomena of global warming, environmental degradation, and climate change, as well as the growth of the global population and industrial activity, are all contributing factors to the increasing significance of environmental sustainability. This study demonstrates that in the future, digital transformation and customer-centric approaches may have a profound impact on the marketing environment within the hospitality sector.

Application of the ESG-concept in agricultural sector of Kazakhstan: competitive advantages

The goal is to identify the possibilities of applying the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) system for agro-industrial complex based on the analysis of its current state and adaptation to the concept of socio-economic and environmental sustainability (ESG). The methods - general scientific: comparative, statistical analysis, as well as logical and generalization, which were used as theoretical and methodological basis based on the fundamental principles of the ESG-concept, presented in the works of various foreign economic schools. Results - main problems of AIC are identified and systematized according to the UN methodology. The authors note that the proposed grouping of SDG parameters, focused on agricultural sector of Kazakhstan and connections established between them, will make it possible to create an effective, efficient model for the growth of the country’s economy and its agro-industrial production. Conclusions - the research conducted by the authors of the article shows that there is significant resource for achieving the effectiveness of the Sustainable Development Goals based on the implementation of integrated approach that ensures unity and balance of social, economic and environmental goals and their integration into corporate strategies that set out the mission and objectives of the enterprise, as well as means and methods for their implementation. The importance and advantages of the ESG-concept for overcoming the environmental crisis, reducing the anthropogenic impact on the environment, creating conditions for improving the well-being of the rural population and the level of competitiveness of agricultural producers are justified. The implementation of ESG-standards plays important role in ensuring the sustainable development of the industry, helping to improve financial performance of enterprises, providing optimal conditions for attracting investors and strengthening reputation on domestic and international markets, preserving biological and natural diversity.

A Bibliometric Study of Issues in Educational Policy

Education policies help to improve society by decreasing inequities and establishing effective learning environments. Periodic assessments can help researchers and policymakers uncover new obstacles and ensure progress on these ever-changing education policy concerns using critical theory. Bibliometric studies, a type of periodic study, emphasize the importance of data-driven approaches in the formulation and implementation of education policies. This study conducts a bibliometric analysis of education policy issues from 2000 to 2023. Based on keywords, we initially selected 931 articles from the Web of Science (WoS) database. Only articles in English were included, and we used PRISMA guidelines to reduce the number of articles to 363. We focused on citations, publication frequency, topics, trends, and issues. Two independent researchers analyzed the documents for reliability. For validity, we used transferability. We also used a content analysis of frequently cited articles. Our analysis revealed three prominent trends. The first trend pertained to controversial environmental issues and sustainability concepts in education policy. The second theme was professional development, special education, and school choice. The third one was science, vocational education, special education, and ICT. The content analysis results indicated that teaching and learning, professional development, science education, subject matter teaching, and mobile learning were the topics of the content analyzed articles. We found that relying solely on bibliometric review resulted in broad conceptualizations of educational policy issues, focusing primarily on efficiency and effectiveness. Additionally, we applied critical theoretical frameworks to conduct a more comprehensive analysis of the emergent issues identified through bibliometric analysis.

PROJECT BASED LEARNING DESIGN DEVELOPMENT OF FOOD ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS GREEN CHEMISTRY APPROACH TO SUPPORT SCIENTIFIC LITERACY OF CULINARY VOCATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: AN INTRODUCTORY STUDY

This research aims to determine the need for PjBL learning design and learning tools that use a green chemistry approach to food additives to support the scientific literacy of culinary vocational school students. The type of research used is evaluation research using needs assessment to describe the need for learning designs that can be used to support the learning outcomes of culinary vocational school students. Data was collected in the form of a 12 question survey via Google-form with a total of six culinary vocational school teachers using purposive sampling. The results of the research found that (1) all vocational school teachers in culinary field already understand the specifics of the independent curriculum currently used and are familiar with the scientific literacy competencies listed in the general achievements; (2) 4 out of 6 teachers understand the concept of Cleanliness Health Safety Environmental Sustainability (CHSE), 5 out of 6 teachers understand green chemistry and all teachers state that there is a relationship between these two concepts; (3) 5 out of 6 teachers have implemented PjBL and; (4) all teachers stated that there was a lack of learning resources available to support scientific literacy. The results of this research show that culinary vocational school teachers need a PjBL learning design with a green chemistry approach along with learning tools to support the scientific literacy of culinary vocational school students

Nexus among Regulatory Framework, Economic Growth and Sustainable Development: Insights from Structural Equation Modeling Approach

The concept of sustainable development holds immense importance for both current and future generations. This study investigates the manner in which economic growth acts as a mediator in the relationship between sustainable development and the regulatory framework. We have utilized the structural equation modeling technique to investigate the direct and indirect impacts of exogenous and endogenous variables. We executed this investigation using a sample of 24 countries that accounted for about 65% of global greenhouse gas emissions between 2000 and 2019. According to empirical results based on direct effects, the regulatory framework hinders sustainable development and economic growth. The empirical findings indicate that the regulatory framework has a noteworthy and favorable indirect influence on sustainable development, with economic growth serving as a mediating factor. Furthermore, because of the positive indirect effect, the regulatory framework's negative direct effect on sustainable development outweighs its total adverse effect. In the end, legislators should give utmost importance to creating a balanced regulatory framework that promotes economic expansion while incorporating concepts of environmental, social, and economic sustainability to ensure the well-being of present and future generations.

Assessment of the Effectiveness of Intelligent Computing Modeling Application Environment for Sustainable Integration with Civic Education in Colleges and Universities

Abstract Incorporating the concept of environmentally sustainable development into the Civics program in colleges and universities is an important initiative to promote the service of environmental sustainability by the Freshmen. Innovative teaching mode of ecological sustainability and civic education, and the deep integration of green development concept and civic education are crucial to cultivating high-quality talents with environmental sustainability. In this paper, the collected data were standardized and defuzzified, and the CRITIC combination assignment method was used to assign weights to the indicators to obtain the optimal combination weights. Based on this, the indicator data’s gray correlation coefficient and correlation degree were calculated to construct the effect assessment model. The evaluation content for integrating the cultivation of the concept of environmental sustainability and ideological education is proposed in the paper, and the effect evaluation of this was implemented for 11 years. The evaluation results show that in the three classes of college A in the pilot area, the integration of the concept of environmental sustainability and Civic and Political education of college students was significantly improved, and the mean values of the measured improvement were 4.96, 5.05, and 4.95, respectively, which showed a better effect. Among the dimension scores, the mean value of the scores of the three classes in the five dimensions is 3.624.This result indicates that the cultivation of the concept of environmental sustainability has a significant enhancement effect on the performance of Civic and Political Education, and the integration of the two is having a significant impact. The study in this paper incorporates the concept of environmental sustainability into the ideology and political science curriculum of colleges and universities is an effective strategy that not only enhances students’ environmental awareness, but also strengthens the effectiveness of ideology and political science education.

Ecotheology, according to Ismail Raji Al-Faruqi, is First, the environmental crisis according to Ismail Raji Al-Faruqi is an environmental situation where natural ecosystems and the environment on earth are threatened due to negative factors caused by humans, who do not realize that humans and nature are interdependent. Second, the Islamic view of the environment is that the environment is God's work, which was created as a place for humans to live, grow, and develop, as well as carry out their obligations as God's creatures. Third, the concept of faith-based environmental sustainability, according to Ismail Raji Al-Faruqi, is maintaining the state of the natural environment by making belief in God the foundation for treating the environment as God has commanded.</p>

Living Simply and Living Off Grid in Mark Sundeen’s the Unsettlers

Mark Sundeen is an American born author of many successful books touching on various themes. One of his most prolific book is The Unsettlers, which was published in 2017, and focuses on two emerging practices, living off the grid and living simply. The author combines these two themes in The Unsettlers as though to imply that they are related. This provides a starting point for the reader to understand what they are. Living simply underscores the quest to resist the material culture prevailing in America and the world today. Living off the grid underscores the quest to be free from bills and utility connections for water, electricity, and gasoline. The simplicity theory by Nick Chater. Paul Vitanyi, Jacob Feldman, Jean-Louis Dessalles, and Jürgen Schmidhuber provide a better understanding of human affinity to noncomplex things. When examined through the concepts of anti-consumerism and environmentalism, simplicity theory helps understand Sundeen’s ideas about living simply. The theory of Eco-psychology by Theodore Roszak offers a better understanding of the link between the environment and economic activities. This theory helps understand the ideas of Sundeen on living off the grid when evaluated through the concepts of environmental sustainability and ecological economics. This paper examines the motivations and processes of living simply and living off the grid.

Mangrove Management Model Towards Net Zero Emissions in Sinjai Regency, South Sulawesi Province.

Mangrove ecosystem plays a very vital role in mitigating climate change, through carbon CO2 absorption. Mangroves have high potential as carbon sequestration. Sinjai Regency is one of the pilot project locations for district/city involvement in the Regional Low Carbon Development Plan in South Sulawesi Province, so that the policy continues to be implemented in various regions. Sinjai Regency has a Mangrove Area which is the result of rehabilitation, but there are indications of changes in land cover that are used conventionally and not integrated, causing a reduction in the area of mangrove land cover. This study aims to analyze the behavior of the model using three policy scenarios with the concept of environmental sustainability in terms of the contribution of mangrove forest utilization to emission absorption. The method used to see changes in land use from year to year is the spatial analysis method, then the data is analyzed using a dynamic system. This research was conducted from January to June 2022 in Sinjai Regency, South Sulawesi Province. The results of the analysis reveal that there are several types of land use that have decreased in area and some have increased in area from year to year. The simulation results show that the proportion of emissions is inversely proportional to changes in mangrove area. The recommended policy is to maintain a minimum land area in the Mangrove Area which is a Protected and Conservation Area and carry out mangrove rehabilitation. The policy structure in the mangrove sector is divided into three parts, scenarios under baseline, fair and ambitious conditions. The mangrove sector in baseline conditions can achieve net zero emissions in 2041, while fair conditions are achieved in 2027 and ambitious conditions are achieved in 2024.
