Characteristics of Anthropogenic Pollution in the Atmospheric Air of South-Western Svalbard (Hornsund, Spring 2019)

The character of atmospheric pollution and its impact on surface waters may vary substantially in space, and hence, we add a potentially important location for the studies of atmospheric air pollution to the map of the High Arctic. We have investigated the anthropogenic particle characteristics and selected persistent organic pollutant concentrations, in a priorly unmonitored location in the Arctic (Svalbard), exposed to a climatic gradient. Single-particle analysis of PM indicates that besides the prevailing natural aerosol particles, anthropogenic ones were present. The likely anthropogenic origin of some particles was established for spherical Fe-rich or aluminosilicate particles formed in high-temperature processes or metal-rich particles of the chemical composition corresponding to industrial products and atypical for natural minerals; soot, tar balls, and secondary sulfate were also likely of anthropogenic origin. Some of the observed anthropogenic particles could only come from remote industrial sources. POP concentrations indicated a background of LRAT, consistent with the ΣPCB concentrations and volatility profile. However, the ΣDDX composition indicating aged sources and an order of magnitude higher concentrations of both ΣDDXs and ΣHCHs than at other High Arctic monitoring stations indicate their potential source in two types of re-emission from secondary sources, i.e., from seawater and snowpack, respectively.

Human Consumption of Non-Native Species in a Circular Economy: Determination of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Invasive Signal Crayfish from a Baltic Coastal River and Its Assessment for Consumption

A circular economy aims at decoupling value creation from waste generation and resource use. The signal crayfish Pacifastacus leniusculus is kept worldwide in aquaculture and after escaping into the wild, may further be used for human consumption rather than eradicated and used for purposes such as fertilizing fields. The level of contamination by two groups of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), in non-native signal crayfish from a Baltic coastal river, was measured in two locations (under anthropogenic pressure and semi-natural pressure) to understand whether its consumption might be a threat to human health. Concentrations of indicators and total compounds of POPs in the edible parts of crayfish (muscular tissue of crayfish) with potential human health risks were determined. The levels of concentrations of POPs meet the requirements of Regulations (EU) No. 836/2011 and No. 1259/2011 for the consumption of crustaceans. Our results also indicate no significant public health risk caused by consumption of the signal crayfish (hazard quotients (HQ) < 1). The results show that the bioaccumulation of POPs depends on the species’ traits and environment.

Changes in Adipose Tissue and Circulating Concentrations of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Midlife Women.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) that bioaccumulate in adipose tissue. We investigated the relationship between change in central adiposity and changes in circulating concentrations of POPs over a 12-year period during the midlife. Serum concentrations of 34 PCBs and 19 OCPs were measured at four time points (1999/2000, 2002/03, 2005/06, 2009/11) in a cohort of midlife women, the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation. Linear mixed models were used to test the association between a change in waist circumference and a change in serum POP concentrations. Sixty-five women contributed 181 PCB observations. Fifty-nine women contributed 151 OCP observations. After adjustment for covariates (study site, race and ethnicity, age at baseline, parity), a one-inch (2.54 cm) increase in the change in waist circumference between visits was associated with a 4.9% decrease in the change in serum concentration of PCB 194 (95% CI: -8.0%, -1.6%). No associations were observed for other PCB congeners or the presence of OCPs. An increase in the difference in waist circumference over time was not associated with a change in the difference in serum concentrations of PCBs and OCPs except for PCB 194, possibly due to the high lipophilicity.

The red listed eagle owl (Bubo bubo) population in Norway is exposed to POP levels exceeding threshold values for adverse health effects

The eagle owl (Bubo bubo) population in Norway is today classified as critically endangered on the red list of endangered species. Because previous studies have detected high concentrations of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in birds of prey, concerns have been raised whether POPs exposure are a significant factor to the substantial decline of the eagle owl population.The aims of this study were to measure the levels of POPs in eagle owls and to assess whether POPs may represent a potential health risk. POPs were analysed in liver samples from 100 eagle owls collected between 1994 and 2014.The concentrations of POPs were generally very high and individual birds had levels among the highest measured worldwide. The contaminant groups analysed were highly correlated (p < 0.0001). The concentrations of sum of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (∑PCB) exceeded the threshold value from moderate to severe health risk in 90% of the birds. The birds with cachectic or lean body condition had significantly higher levels of contaminants than those with higher body condition scores. No significant temporal or spatial trends were noted.The lack of temporal trends, suggest that the downward trend of POPs, appear to be levelling off. The lack of differences between inland and coastal regions suggest that the risk of exposure may be comparable between predatory birds feeding in marine or terrestrial food webs. The significantly higher POPs levels detected in individuals with poor body condition may be due to reduced fat stores and thereby higher concentration in the remaining fat and/or the weight loss could be induced by toxic effects. The high proportion of birds exceeding the threshold values for severe and high risk of adverse effects, suggest that the high contamination load may reduce the eagle owl’s fitness and survival and, thus, contribute to decline of the eagle owl population.

A screening model for predicting the potential of soil colloids-enhanced leaching of hydrophobic organic contaminants to groundwater at contaminated sites

Modeling the fate and transport of organic pollutants at contaminated sites is critical for risk assessment and management practices, such as establishing realistic cleanup standards or remediation endpoints. Against the conventional wisdom that highly hydrophobic persistent organic pollutants (POPs) (e.g., polybrominated diphenyl ethers and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) in surface soils are essentially immobile, mounting evidence has demonstrated the potential of these contaminants leaching into the groundwater, due to enhanced transport by soil colloids. Here, we develop a Colloids-Enhanced Transport (CET) model, which can be used as a simple screening tool to predict the leaching potential of POPs into groundwater, as mediated by soil colloids. The CET model incorporates several processes, including the release of POPs-bearing colloids into the porewater, the vertical transport of colloids and associated POPs in the vadose zone, the mixing of POPs-containing soil leachate with groundwater, and the migration of POPs-bearing colloids in saturated zone. Thus, using parameters that can be easily obtained (e.g., annual rainfall, soil type, and common hydrogeological properties of the subsurface porous media), the CET model can estimate the concentrations of POPs in the saturated zone from the observed POPs concentrations in surface or shallow subsurface zones. The CET model can also be used to derive soil quality standards or cleanup endpoints by back-calculating soil concentrations based on groundwater protection limits.

Emerging and legacy contaminants on the Brazilian southern coast (Santa Catarina): A multi-biomarker approach in oysters Crassostrea gasar (Adanson, 1757)

Coastal environments, such as those in the Santa Catarina State (SC, Brazil), are considered the primary receptors of anthropogenic pollutants. In this study, our objective was to evaluate the levels of emerging contaminants (ECs) and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in indigenous Crassostrea gasar oysters from different regions of SC coast in the summer season (March 2022). Field collections were conducted in the São Francisco do Sul, Itajaí, Florianópolis and Laguna coastal zones. We analyzed the bioaccumulation levels of 75 compounds, including antibiotics (AB), endocrine disruptors (ED), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and pesticides. Furthermore, we assessed biomarker responses related to biotransformation, antioxidant defense, heat shock protection and oxidative damage in oysters' gills. Prevalence of ECs was observed in the central and southern regions, while the highest concentrations of POPs were detected in the central-northern regions of SC. Oysters exhibited an induction in biotransformation systems (cyp2au1 and cyp356a1, sult and GST activity) and antioxidant enzymes activities (SOD, CAT and GPx). Higher susceptibility to lipid peroxidation was observed in the animals from Florianópolis compared to other regions. Correlation analyses indicated possible associations between contaminants and environmental variables in the biomarker responses, serving as a warning related to climate change. Our results highlight the influence of anthropogenic activities on SC, serving as baseline of ECs and POPs levels in the coastal areas of Santa Catarina, indicating more critical zones for extensive monitoring, aiming to conserve coastal regions.

Biomagnification of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in detritivorous, phytophagous, and predatory invertebrates: How POPs enter terrestrial food web?

Invertebrates are primary contributors to fluxes of nutrients, energy, and contaminants in terrestrial food webs, but the trophodynamic of contaminants in invertebrate food chains is not fully understood. In this study, occurrence and biomagnification of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were assessed in detritivorous, phytophagous, and predatory invertebrate food chains. Detritivorous species (earthworm and dung beetle) have higher concentrations of POPs than other species. Different composition patterns and biomagnification factors (BMFs) of POPs were observed for invertebrate species. Negative correlations were found between BMFs and log KOW of POPs for detritivorous and most phytophagous species. In contrast, parabolic relationships between BMFs and log KOW were observed in snails and predatory species, possibly attributed to the efficient digestion and absorption of diet and POPs for them. Bioenergetic characteristics are indicative of the biomagnification potential of POPs in terrestrial wildlife, as suggested by the significant and positive correlation between basal metabolic rates (BMRs) and BMFs of BDE 153 for invertebrates, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The estimations of dietary exposure suggest that the terrestrial predators, especially feeding on the underground invertebrates, could be exposed to high level POPs from invertebrates.

Evaluation on purine metabolism in human skin fibroblast cells exposed to oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.

A rapid and sensitive assessment of the toxicity of oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs), widely distributed persistent organic pollutants in the environment, is crucial for human health. In this study, using high-performance liquid chromatography, the separation and detection of four purines, xanthine (X), guanine (G), adenine (A), and hypoxanthine (HX) in cells were performed. The aim was to evaluate the cytotoxicity of three OPAHs, namely 1,4-benzoquinone (1,4-BQ), 1,2-naphthoquinone (1,2-NQ) and 9,10-phenanthrenequinone (9,10-PQ), with higher environmental concentrations, from the perspective of purine nucleotide metabolism in human skin fibroblast cells (HFF-1). The results revealed that the levels of G and A were low in HFF-1 cells, while the levels of HX and X showed a dose-response relationship with persistent organic pollutants concentration. With increased concentration of the three persistent organic pollutants, the purine metabolism in HFF-1 cells weakened, and the impact of the three persistent organic pollutants on purine metabolism in cells was in the order of 9,10-PQ > 1,4-BQ > 1,2-NQ. This study provided valuable insights into the toxic mechanisms of 1,4-BQ, 1,2-NQ and 9,10-PQ, contributing to the formulation of relevant protective measures and the safeguarding of human health.

Chemical and microbiological insights into two littoral Antarctic demosponge species: Haliclona (Rhizoniera) dancoi (Topsent 1901) and Haliclona (Rhizoniera) scotti (Kirkpatrick 1907).

Antarctic Porifera have gained increasing interest as hosts of diversified associated microbial communities that could provide interesting insights on the holobiome system and its relation with environmental parameters. The Antarctic demosponge species Haliclona dancoi and Haliclona scotti were targeted for the determination of persistent organic pollutant (i. e., polychlorobiphenyls, PCBs, and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs) and trace metal concentrations, along with the characterization of the associated prokaryotic communities by the 16S rRNA next generation sequencing, to evaluate possible relationships between pollutant accumulation (e.g., as a stress factor) and prokaryotic community composition in Antarctic sponges. To the best of our knowledge, this approach has been never applied before. Notably, both chemical and microbiological data on H. scotti (a quite rare species in the Ross Sea) are here reported for the first time, as well as the determination of PAHs in Antarctic Porifera. Both sponge species generally contained higher amounts of pollutants than the surrounding sediment and seawater, thus demonstrating their accumulation capability. The structure of the associated prokaryotic communities, even if differing at order and genus levels between the two sponge species, was dominated by Proteobacteria and Bacteroidota (with Archaea abundances that were negligible) and appeared in sharp contrast to communities inhabiting the bulk environment. Results suggested that some bacterial groups associated with H. dancoi and H. scotti were significantly (positively or negatively) correlated to the occurrence of certain contaminants.

Is Physical Activity an Efficient Strategy to Control the Adverse Effects of Persistent Organic Pollutants in the Context of Obesity? A Narrative Review.

Obesity affects nearly 660 million adults worldwide and is known for its many comorbidities. Although the phenomenon of obesity is not fully understood, science regularly reveals new determinants of this pathology. Among them, persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have been recently highlighted. Mainly lipophilic, POPs are normally stored in adipose tissue and can lead to adverse metabolic effects when released into the bloodstream. The main objective of this narrative review is to discuss the different pathways by which physical activity may counteract POPs' adverse effects. The research that we carried out seems to indicate that physical activity could positively influence several pathways negatively influenced by POPs, such as insulin resistance, inflammation, lipid accumulation, adipogenesis, and gut microbiota dysbiosis, that are associated with the development of obesity. This review also indicates how, through the controlled mobilization of POPs, physical activity could be a valuable approach to reduce the concentration of POPs in the bloodstream. These findings suggest that physical activity should be used to counteract the adverse effects of POPs. However, future studies should accurately assess its impact in specific situations such as bariatric surgery, where weight loss promotes POPs' blood release.

MEASUREMENT OF PERSISTENT ORGANIC POLLUTANTS, PERFLUORINATED COMPOUNDS, AND TOXIC METALS IN THE BLOOD OF HUMBOLDT PENGUINS (SPHENISCUS HUMBOLDTI) AT PUNTA SAN JUAN, PERU USING DRIED BLOOD SPOTS.

The Humboldt penguin (Spheniscus humboldti) population at the Punta San Juan Marine Protected Area in Peru is considered critical to the long-term sustainability of this endangered species in Peru. Exposure of the rookery to environmental toxicants is a mounting concern because of regional growth of industries and human populations. Whole blood samples were collected from 30 free-ranging penguins in 2011 as part of a broader population health monitoring program. Dried blood spots (DBS) containing 50 µl of blood were prepared and analyzed to assess exposure to five groups of environmental contaminants. Concentrations of elements arsenic, cadmium, iron, lead, mercury, selenium, and thallium were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Persistent organic pollutant concentrations were measured using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry to analyze organochlorine pesticides (OCP; p,p'-DDT, p,p'-DDE, β-hexachlorocyclohexane, t-nonachlor, and oxychlordane), polychlorinated biphenyls (congeners 138 and 153), and polybrominated flame retardants (polybrominated biphenyl-153 and polybrominated diphenyl ether congeners 47 and 99). Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, including perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Results revealed low levels of exposure to these selected contaminants, at levels not considered to be of concern for wildlife health. DBS methodology was considered effective in a field-based setting for quantification of whole blood concentrations of environmental contaminants in penguins.

Determination of Persistent Organic Pollutants in Human Breast Milk and Their Health Effects

Breast milk, the primary source of nutrition for infants, contains the ideal combination of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins, and provides immunological and other health benefits that protect against infections. Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are lipophilic organic compounds that accumulate in adipose tissue after being assimilated by the mother from the environment. Infants can be exposed to POP through breast milk, making breastfeeding a significant source of exposure. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the numerous POPs that are contaminated in breast milk, the analytical techniques used to detect them in breast milk, and the potential health impacts of these pollutants on mothers through bioaccumulation and on infants through breastfeeding. Peer-reviewed articles published between 1989 and 2023 that covered several key features, including methodologies, health consequences, and other significant factors, were abstracted to assess the major results and research gaps. The majority of research investigated the relationship between POP concentrations in breast milk and socio-demographic variables. The studies revealed that several Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs), Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs), and their derivatives and industrial by-products such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can contaminate breast milk, posing potential health risks to infants exposed to POPs through breast milk in many regions of the world.

Pollution Assessment with Persistent Organic Pollutants in Upper Soil of a Series of Rural Roma Communities in Transylvania, Romania, Its Sources Apportionment, and the Associated Risk on Human Health

This paper aims to assess the pollution by determining the sources of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in 22 rural Roma communities in Transylvania in order to assess the human health risk associated with this exposure. For this, 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 20 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and 12 polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were determined in 22 soil samples collected from selected areas by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry for PAHs and with electron capture detector for all halogenated compounds. Target compounds were isolated from soil by ultrasound-assisted extraction. We found that POP concentrations in soil ranged from 4.86 to 451.85 ng/g dw for PAHs, from 25.62 to 139.30 ng/g dw for OCPs, and from 0.22 to 49.12 ng/g dw for PCBs. The diagnostic ratios ƩLMW/ƩHMW, ANT/(ANT + PHE), and FLT/(FLT + PYR) strongly suggest a pyrogenic model of PAHs, such as biomass, coal, and petroleum combustion, while the isomer ratios ƩDDT/ƩHCH, α-HCH/γ-HCH and (DDE + DDD)/ƩDDT suggest that OCP residues originate from their ancient uses. Non-carcinogenic (HI) and carcinogenic (CR) risks of these organic compounds present in the soil through non-dietary pathways were in the very low-risk category (ranging from 10−8 to 10−4), indicating an absence of these risks from the investigated POPs in the studied area.

Assessment of persistent organic pollutants in killer whales (Orcinus orca) of the Canadian Arctic: Implications for subsistence consumption and conservation strategies

Killer whales (Orcinus orca) historically restricted to certain Arctic regions due to extensive sea ice have recently been documented farther north and for longer durations in the Canadian Arctic. These apex predators accumulate high levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The objective of this study was to evaluate the concentrations and profiles of POPs in killer whales of the Canadian Arctic, thus determining potential risks for Inuit communities if consumed. Biopsies were collected from 33 killer whales across areas of the Canadian Arctic between 2009 and 2021. Significant variability in POP concentrations was observed among whales. The cumulative POP concentrations ranged from 12 to >2270 mg/kg lw, representing ∼200-fold increase from the least to the most contaminated individual. The rank order of concentrations of the top five contaminant classes was ∑DDT, ∑PCB, ∑CHL, ∑Toxaphene, and Dieldrin. Several emerging Arctic contaminants were detected, including chlorpyrifos, endosulfan, pentachloroanisole, and polychlorinated naphthalenes, although at relatively lower concentrations than legacy POPs. Considering the elevated blubber POP levels in killer whales, recommended daily consumption thresholds, established based on human tolerable daily intake (TDI) values, were notably restricted for ∑PCB (<0.14 g), ∑DDT (<6.9 g), ∑CHL (<13 g), dieldrin (<8 g) and heptachlor epoxide (<5 g). Killer whales in the Canadian Arctic exhibited higher POP concentrations than other commonly hunted species such as polar bears, ringed seals, and Arctic char. We acknowledge that a more holistic risk assessment of diet is required to assess the cumulative impacts of contaminant mixtures as well as nutritional quality of tissues commonly consumed by northern communities.

Concentration and sources of persistent organic pollutants within the vicinity of a scrap-iron smelting plant: Seasonal pattern and health risk assessment

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a class of ubiquitous and significant synthetic organic chemicals that pose deleterious threats to the environment and human health. This study examined the concentration, indoor-outdoor and seasonal change, sources, and health effects of PCBs in particulate-bound dust near a scrap iron recycling plant. PCBs levels were determined in samples using gas chromatograph mass spectrometer. The results indicated that 5 Cl atoms PCB constituted the majority of PCBs (41% overall), contributing 43% during the rainy season and 39% during the dry season. Dioxin-like PCBs (DLPCBs) contributed 38% during the rainy season and 33% during the dry season. In addition, DLPCB accounted for 26% and 40% of indoor and outdoor PCB emissions, respectively. Iron and steel production were identified as the highest identified contributing sources, accounting for 76% of PCB emissions in the rainy season, while plastic combustion had the highest contribution in the dry season, accounting for 44% of PCB emissions. Incremental Lifetime Cancer Risk assessment showed ingestion as the main exposure pathway for children and adults during the two seasons (74.42% and 58.24%, respectively), followed by dermal exposure, while inhalation had the least contribution. A multifaced approach involving relevant agencies, the industry, and the community is required to reduce exposure.

Sources of persistent organic pollutants and their physiological effects on opportunistic urban gulls

Urbanization is associated with drastic shifts in biodiversity. While some species thrive in urban areas, the impact of inhabiting these human-altered environments on organism physiology remains understudied. We investigated how exposure to polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) affects the physiology of yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis) inhabiting a densely populated, industrialized city. We analyzed blood samples from 50 gulls (20 immatures and 30 adults) and assessed 27 physiological parameters and biomarkers related to xenobiotic protection, health, and feeding habits in these same individuals. We also tracked the movements of 25 gulls (15 immatures and 10 adults) to identify potential sources of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Both adult and immature gulls primarily inhabited urban areas, followed by marine habitats. Immature gulls spent more time in freshwater, landfills, and agricultural areas. Bioaccumulated ΣPCB (median = 92.7 ng g-1 ww, 1.86–592) and ΣPBDE (median = 1.44 ng g-1 ww, 0.022–9.58) showed no significant differences between age and sex groups. Notably, immature males exhibited the highest correlations with POP concentrations, particularly with the activity of carboxylesterases (CEs), suggesting a higher sensitivity than adults. These findings highlight the potential of plasmatic CEs in immature yellow-legged gulls as effective tracers of POPs exposure and effects, offering insights into the anthropogenic impacts on urban biodiversity.

Feeding and biological differences induce wide variation in legacy persistent organic pollutant concentrations among toothed whales and polar bear in the Arctic

Polar bear and toothed whales in the Arctic exhibit orders of magnitude differences in concentrations of legacy persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which may be attributed to comparisons made across regions and different time frames. These interspecific differences could also be influenced by variations in biological susceptibility, including differences in xenobiotic biotransformation between polar bear, from the order Carnivora, and toothed whales, from the order Artiodactyla, as well as ecological factors, such as variation in feeding patterns. Here, we analyzed samples from subsistence-harvested toothed whales and polar bear in East Greenland collected between 2012 and 2021 and quantitatively compared interspecific differences in blubber/adipose polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) and organochlorine (OC) pesticide concentrations. We further determined fatty acid (FA) signatures as dietary tracers to evaluate how feeding patterns influence POP concentrations relative to the influence of biological differences between taxa. Killer whale exhibited the highest mean concentrations of ΣPCBs (57.0 ± 14.0 mg/kg lw), Σdichlorodiphentlytrichloroethanes (ΣDDTs; 55.7 ± 13.1 lw), and Σchlordanes (ΣCHLs; 23.1 ± 5.6 mg/kg lw), while polar bear showed the second highest concentrations for ΣPCBs (12.5 ± 1.3 mg/kg lw), but comparable or even lower levels of all OCs relative to narwhal and pilot whale. Linear models using FA patterns as explanatory variables for POP concentrations demonstrated that, for ΣPCBs, diet differences explained most of the variation. Conversely, biological differences explained more of the variation for most OCs, especially for DDT, for which polar bear showed the lowest concentrations despite feeding on similarly high trophic position prey as killer whale. This novel quantitative comparison confirms that significant differences in legacy POP concentrations occur among Arctic marine mammal predators. Furthermore, the drivers of these differences are contaminant-specific, with feeding patterns primarily influencing PCB concentrations, taxa-specific biological characteristics (e.g., in xenobiotic biotransformation capacity) affecting DDT concentrations, and both factors contributing to variation in other OCs.

Association between persistent organic pollutants in human milk and the infant growth and development throughout the first year postpartum in a cohort from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are compounds that are recalcitrant and ubiquitous that bioaccumulate in human milk (HM) and can impact infant growth and development. We explore the association between POP concentration in HM at 2-50 days postpartum and infant growth and development trajectory throughout the first year of life. A cohort of 68 healthy adult Brazilian women and their infants were followed from 28 to 35 gestational weeks to 12 months postpartum. HM samples were collected between 2 and 50 days postpartum, and POP concentrations were analyzed using gas chromatography with mass spectrometry. Concentrations of POPs >limit of quantification (LOQ) were defined as presence, and concentrations ≤LOQ as an absence. Growth z-scores were analyzed according to WHO growth charts and infant development scores according to Age & Stages Questionnaires at 1 (n = 66), 6 (n = 50), and 12 months (n = 45). Linear mixed effects (LME) models were used to investigate the association of POPs in HM with infant growth and development. Benjamini-Hochberg (BH) correction for multiple testing was performed to reduce the false discovery ratio. P < 0.1 was considered for models with the interaction between POPs and time/sex. After BH correction, adjusted LME models with time interaction showed (1) a positive association between the presence of β hexachlorocyclohexane and an increase in head circumference-for-age z-score (β = 0.003, P = 0.095); (2) negative associations between total POPs (β = -0.000002, P = 0.10), total organochlorine pesticides (β = -0.000002, P = 0.10), and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene concentrations in HM (β = -0.000002, P = 0.10) and fine motor scores. No statistical difference between the sexes was observed. Postnatal exposure to organochlorine pesticides in HM shows a positive association with the trajectory of head circumference-for-age z-score and a negative association with the trajectories of fine motor skills scores. Future studies on POP variation in HM at different postpartum times and their effect on infant growth and development should be encouraged.

The deep dive of organohalogen compounds: Bioaccumulation in the top predators of mesopelagic trophic webs, pygmy and dwarf sperm whales, from the Southwestern Atlantic ocean

Kogia sima and Kogia breviceps are apex predators of mesopelagic trophic webs being far from most anthropogenic threats. However, chemical pollutants and naturally synthesized compounds may travel long distances. This study aimed to use kogiid whales as sentinels of mesopelagic trophic webs in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), e.g., polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and metabolites, mirex, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), polybrominated diphenylethers (PBDEs), pentabromoethylbenzene (PBEB) and hexabromobenzene (HBB), and the naturally produced methoxylated BDE (MeO-BDEs) were determined in the blubber of 16 K. sima and 15 K. breviceps. Among the organochlorine compounds, DDTs were the main group found in K. sima and in K. breviceps (1636.6 and 3983.3 ng g−1 lw, respective medians), followed by PCBs (425.9 and 956.1 ng g−1 lw, respectively), mirex (184.1 and 375.6 ng g−1 lw, respectively), and HCB (132.4 and 340.3 ng g−1 lw, respectively). As for the organobromine, the natural MeO-BDEs were predominant (1676.7 and 501.6 ng g−1 lw, respectively), followed by PBDEs (13.6 and 10.3 ng g−1 lw, respectively) and PBEB (2.2 and 2.9 ng g−1 lw, respectively). In general, POPs concentration was higher in K. breviceps than in K. sima. Conversely, MeO-BDEs concentration was higher in K. sima than in K. breviceps. Differences in concentrations in these sympatric odontocetes were attributed to distinct species, sampling sites, and biological parameters and suggest some level of niche segregation. It is noteworthy the long-range reach and bioaccumulation of these synthetic compounds in an unexplored habitat, that present an increasing economic interest.

Diet, lifestyle and contaminants in three east Greenland Inuit municipalities

Persistent organic pollutants (POP) are environmental contaminants transported over long distances to the Arctic where they biomagnify in marine mammals subsistence hunted by Inuit and may therefore affect human health. Marine mammals in east Greenland are known to have the highest POP concentrations in the circumpolar Arctic area. Due to high intake of marine mammals, east Greenlandic Inuit likewise have the highest POP body burdens across the Arctic. This cross-sectional study aims to investigate the levels of POP and metals in Inuit with a high intake of top predatory species including killer whales and polar bears. Study participants include 37 men and 21 women from Kulusuk, Tasiilaq and Ittoqqortoormiit during year 2013–2015. Lipophilic POP (11 organochlorine-pesticides, 14 polychlorinated-biphenyls (PCB), 10 polybrominated diphenyl ethers), polyunsaturated fatty acids (PFUA) and cotinine were determined in plasma. Fifteen perfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS) were measured in serum and urine and the renal clearance was estimated. Finally the concentration of 10 metals were measured in whole blood. The median age was 38 years, Ittoqqortoormiit Inuit being the oldest. The smoking rate was around 70%, and Kulusuk participants had the lowest PFUA concentrations. Significant municipality differences were observed for lipophilic POP, serum PFAS, mercury, arsenic and selenium with highest concentrations in Ittoqqortoormiit Inuit. Males had higher blood concentrations of PFAS and lead. The estimated PFAS renal clearance and ratio of urine to serum were significantly higher for females, suggesting a sex difference in excretion via the kidney, maybe partly because men had higher serum PFAS concentrations. We observed that Inuit with intake of >200 g polar bear per week had significantly higher levels of PCB, PFAS, arsenic and selenium. In summary, the level of blood POP and heavy metals seems to relate to sex and the frequency intake of meat from marine mammals.
