Soil Quality Testing and Counseling Coastal Agricultural Communities in Taiwan

The Mailiao Town is a traditional agricultural community, located in the south-central region of Taiwan. In this region, the northeast monsoon is entrained with salt for seven months a year. Soil fertility test results between 2011 and 2021 showed that the tillage soil was alkaline and salinized. The content of total nitrogen, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and sodium in the soil were mostly excessive. In the region, open-air continuous farming with heavy fertilizer has been performed. Based on the 10 years of data from the test of soil fertility, we counseled farmers to understand the significance of the values in the reports and the impact on crop growth. We promoted rational fertilization with a series of agricultural counseling actions. The results of the continuous counseling showed that the dependence on nitrogenous fertilizer gradually decreased with the continuous increase of the application of organic fertilizers. The total nitrogen and exchangeable sodium content in soil decreased significantly, and the carbon-nitrogen ratio (C/N) increased every year. The soil environment became close to equilibrium gradually. As a result, the yield and quality of local crops have gradually improved.

Grazing exclusion is more effective for vegetation restoration and nutrient transfer in the heavily degraded desert steppe

BackgroundGrazing exclusion is an efficient practice to restore degraded grassland ecosystems by eliminating external disturbances and improving ecosystems’ self-healing capacities, which affects the ecological processes of soil-plant systems. Grassland degradation levels play a critical role in regulating these ecological processes. However, the effects of vegetation and soil states at different degradation stages on grassland ecosystem restoration are not fully understood. To better understand this, desert steppe at three levels of degradation (light, moderate, and heavy degradation) was fenced for 6 years in Inner Mongolia, China. Community characteristics were investigated, and nutrient concentrations of the soil (0–10 cm depth) and dominant plants were measured.ResultsWe found that grazing exclusion increased shoots’ carbon (C) concentrations, C/N, and C/P, but significantly decreased shoots’ nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations for Stipa breviflora and Cleistogenes songorica. Interestingly, there were no significant differences in nutrient concentrations of these two species among the three degraded desert steppes after grazing exclusion. After grazing exclusion, annual accumulation rates of aboveground C, N, and P pools in the heavily degraded area were the highest, but the aboveground nutrient pools were the lowest among the three degraded grasslands. Similarly, the annual recovery rates of community height, cover, and aboveground biomass in the heavily degraded desert steppe were the highest among the three degraded steppes after grazing exclusion. These results indicate that grazing exclusion is more effective for vegetation restoration in the heavily degraded desert steppe. The soil total carbon, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, available nitrogen, and available phosphorus concentrations in the moderately and heavily degraded desert steppes were significantly decreased after six years of grazing exclusion, whereas these were no changes in the lightly degraded desert steppe. Structural equation model analysis showed that the grassland degradation level mainly altered the community aboveground biomass and aboveground nutrient pool, driving the decrease in soil nutrient concentrations and accelerating nutrient transfer from soil to plant community, especially in the heavily degraded grassland.ConclusionsOur study emphasizes the importance of grassland degradation level in ecosystem restoration and provides theoretical guidance for scientific formulation of containment policies.

Effect of an Ipomoea aquatica Floating Raft on the Water Quality, Antioxidant System, Non-Specific Immune Responses, and Microbial Diversity of Penaeus vannamei in an Aquaculture System

Pacific white shrimp (Penaeus vannamei) is one of the main shrimp species cultivated around the world. Despite its high yields and easy handling, water pollution from intensive shrimp cultivation remains a serious problem in China. In this study, a compound aquaculture model of P. vannamei and water spinach (Ipomoea aquatica) was used to investigate the effect of a water spinach floating raft on water quality, antioxidants, non-specific immune response, growth performance, and microbial diversity. The experimental design of this study consisted of two groups with three replicates for each, i.e., control group: aquatic monoculture (AM) system with only P. vannamei; treatment group: P. vannamei-I. aquatica raft aquaponics (AP) system with a 50% cover ratio with a water spinach floating raft. The experiment lasted for seven weeks. The results show that the concentrations of total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), nitrate nitrogen (NO3−-N), ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N), nitrite nitrogen (NO2−-N), and active phosphorus (AP) in the AM group were higher than those in the AP group at different sampling times. The water quality index of the AP group was better than that of the AM group, indicating that water spinach can remove the nutrients from aquaculture water bodies. The average daily gain and survival rate of shrimp in the AP group were higher than those in the AM group. The total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and acid phosphatase (ACP) in the AP group were better than those in the AM group. The Shannon–Wiener and Simpson indices of the gut, water, and sediment of the AP system were significantly higher than those in the AM system, which implied a higher abundance of microorganisms in the AP system. These results demonstrate that the application of a water spinach floating raft in aquaponics can not only improve the water quality, but also improve the growth performance, antioxidant system, and non-specific immune responses of Pacific white shrimp, while increasing the abundance of microorganisms in the aquaculture system and improving the ecological benefits in terms of the expenditure.

Machine learning and metagenomics identifies uncharacterized taxa inferred to drive biogeochemical cycles in a subtropical hypereutrophic estuary

Abstract Anthropogenic influences have drastically increased nutrient concentrations in many estuaries globally, and microbial communities have adapted to the resulting hypereutrophic ecosystems. However, our knowledge of the dominant microbial taxa and their potential functions in these ecosystems has remained sparse. Here, we study prokaryotic community dynamics in a temporal–spatial dataset, from a subtropical hypereutrophic estuary. Screening 54 water samples across brackish to marine sites revealed that nutrient concentrations and salinity best explained spatial community variations, whereas temperature and dissolved oxygen likely drive seasonal shifts. By combining short and long read sequencing data, we recovered 2459 metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), proposed new taxon names for previously uncharacterised lineages, and created an extensive, habitat specific genome reference database. Community profiling based on this genome reference database revealed a diverse prokaryotic community comprising 61 bacterial and 18 archaeal phyla, and resulted in an improved taxonomic resolution at lower ranks down to genus level. We found that the vast majority (61 out of 73) of abundant genus level taxa (>1% average) represented unnamed and novel lineages, and that all genera could be clearly separated into brackish and marine ecotypes with inferred habitat specific functions. Applying supervised machine learning and metabolic reconstruction, we identified several microbial indicator taxa responding directly or indirectly to elevated nitrate and total phosphorus concentrations. In conclusion, our analysis highlights the importance of improved taxonomic resolution, sheds light on the role of previously uncharacterised lineages in estuarine nutrient cycling, and identifies microbial indicators for nutrient levels crucial in estuary health assessments.

A pilot-scale anoxic-anaerobic-anoxic-oxic combined with moving bed biofilm reactor system for advanced treatment of rural wastewater

Rural domestic poses a significant challenge to treatment technologies due to significant fluctuations in both water quality, particularly in terms of carbon concentration, and quantity. Conventional biological technology, such as anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A2O) systems, is inefficient. In this work, a continuous pilot-scale anoxic-anaerobic-anoxic-oxic (A3O) reactor with a moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) system was constructed and optimized to improve the treatment efficiency of rural domestic wastewater. The sludge return ratio, volume ratio of the oxic-to-anoxic zone (Voxi/Vano), step-feeding and hydraulic retention time (HRT) at low temperature were considered the main parameters for optimization. Microbial analysis was performed on both the mixed liquor and carrier of the A3O-MBBR system under initial and post-optimized conditions. The results indicated that the A3O-MBBR improved the treatment efficiency of rural domestic wastewater, especially for total phosphorus (TP), which increased by 20 % compared with that of the A2O-MBR. In addition, the removal efficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorus were further optimized, and the average concentrations of total nitrogen (TN) and TP in the effluent reached 2.46 and 0.364 mg/L, respectively, at a sludge reflux ratio of 100 or 150 %, Voxi/Vano =200 %, step-feeding of 0.5Q/0.5Q (anaerobic/anoxic) and HRT of 15 h at low temperature in the A3O-MBBR, which met standard A of GB18918–2002, China (TN < 15 mg/L, TP < 0.5 mg/L). The average rate of attaining the standard increased by 58.63 % (post optimization). The microbial analysis showed an increase in species diversity and richness after the parameters were optimized. Moreover, compared to the microbial community structure before optimization, the post-optimization exhibited a more stable microbial structure with a significant enrichment of functional bacteria. Defluviimonas, Novosphingobium and Bifidobacterium, considered as the dominant nitrification or denitrifying bacteria, were enriched in the suspended sludge of the MBBR reactor, which the relative abundance increased by 3.11 %, 3.84 %, and 3.24 %, respectively. Further analysis of the microbial community in the carrier revealed that the abundance of Nitrospira and the denitrifying bacteria carried by the carrier were much greater than those in the suspended sludge. Consequently, the microorganism cooperation between suspended sludge and biofilm might be responsible for the improved performance of the optimized A3O-MBBR.

Characteristics of Microorganisms and Antibiotic Resistance Genes of the Riparian Soil in the Lanzhou Section of the Yellow River

Riparian soil is a critical area of watersheds. The characteristics of biological contaminants in riparian soil affect the pollution control of the watershed water environment. Thus, the microbial community structure, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), and mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in the riparian soil of the Lanzhou section of the Yellow River were investigated by analyzing the characteristics of soil samples collected from farmland, mountains, and industrial land. The results showed that the Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria were the dominant phyla in the riparian soil of Lanzhou section of the Yellow River. The microbial structure in the riparian soil was significantly correlated with the land use type (P &lt; 0.05). The α diversity index of bacterial communities in land types was in the order of farmland &gt; mountain &gt; industry. Sulfonamide-typed ARGs were the most dominant genes in the soil of the Lanzhou section of the Yellow River Basin, among which the sul1 gene had the highest abundance, 20-36 000 times that of other detected ARGs. Moreover, the total absolute abundance of ARGs in industrial soil was the highest. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) displayed that the ARGs characteristics had a significant correlation with land types (P &lt; 0.05), and intl1 and tnpA-04 drove the diffuseness of sulfonamide and tetracycline ARGs, respectively. Redundancy analysis (RDA) demonstrated that the content of inorganic salt ions and total phosphorus in the soil of the riparian zone of the Yellow River Lanzhou section were the main environmental factors, modifying the distribution of the microbial structure. Halobacterota and Acidobacteriota were the main microflora that drove the structural change in ARGs.

Tillage and Straw Management Practices Influences Soil Nutrient Distribution: A Case Study from North-Eastern Romania

Tillage practices govern crop quality and quantity through soil nutrient availability and crop root systems. A deeper knowledge of the impact of conservation tillage on soil chemical characteristics (such as pH, soil organic carbon, macro and micronutrient storage and distribution) is required for both the promotion of agricultural sustainability and environmental preservation. This study assesses the changes in soil features and properties in the context of a long-field experiment with different tillage systems and straw management practices. Research findings revealed that compared with conventional tillage (CT) conservative tillage with partial straw retention (MT) and no-tillage with straw mulching (NT) substantially boosted the organic carbon (OC) (by 6–19%), total nitrogen (TN) (by 2–12%), and available potassium content (AK) (by 2–5%), in 0–30 cm soil depth. However, the stratification trend was observed for available macro and micronutrient content (Zn, Fe, Mn) in both conservative management practices. The concentration of Cu indicates a constant pattern through a 0–30 cm soil profile with a higher concentration under MT (1.41 mg kg−1) compared to NT (1.10 mg kg−1). In particular, the results failed to establish if conservation tillage can increase the total phosphorus (TP) and potassium content (TK), where only in surface 0–10 cm an increase was observed. This research also suggested that the X-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF) of total micronutrient content (Zn, Cu, Fe, Mn) is minimal or unpredictable with no substantial differences between the tillage systems and straw return management practices. These findings suggest that conservation tillage in north-eastern Romania might be optimal to maintain soil quality status and sustain high yields.

Natural soil as the peroxymonosulfate activator for efficient remediation and detoxification of bisphenol A: Nonradical-dominated mechanism and the change of soil properties

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has been extensively applied in soil refractory organics remediation, but studies without an activator were scarce. Besides, the role of soil as well as the interaction between the soil constituents and PMS remained unclear. Using bisphenol A (BPA) as a model contaminant, our findings demonstrated that soil could efficiently activate PMS for BPA abatement in water and slurry. Free Fe oxides, especially crystalline Fe oxides in soil, were primarily responsible for PMS activation through nonradical pathways (singlet oxygen) for BPA removal, but soil organic matter (SOM) might inhibit the process. Moreover, BPA elimination was almost not inhibited by the addition of anions (Cl−, NO3−, HCO3−, and SO42−) and humic acid, but could be promoted by cations (Fe3+ and Mn2+). PMS oxidation caused an insignificant impact on the bioavailability of heavy metals, except for Fe, Mn, SOM, pH, total phosphorus (TP) content, soil composition, and crystal structure have not changed obviously after PMS treatment. BPA decomposition pathways were proposed based on the intermediates identified. Furthermore, the phytotoxicity of BPA − polluted soil was significantly reduced after PMS remediation in terms of crop growth indexes. Overall, the study provided new insights into the crucial role of soil constituents in PMS activation and inspired more energy or catalyst − saving soil remediation strategies.

How did ancient human activities influence the properties and development of soil?—a case study of the Yangshao Village cultural relic site, Henan Province

Introduction: What were the effects of paleoanthropogenic activities on the physicochemical properties and degree of the development of soil? To search for this answer, we can not only understand the different types of ancient human activities but also explore the intensity and characteristics of the activities.Methods: In this study, soil samples from different soil layers and two profiles in the Yangshao Village cultural site in Henan Province were collected. Their physicochemical properties and the sporophyte phyllosilicates they contain were analyzed and compared.Results: We found that the paleoanthropogenic activities started in the relatively low-lying area, in which the slash-and-burn activities resulted in the soil being filled with intrusions such as charcoal debris and ceramic shards. At the same time, the coarse-grained matter was affected by the plowing activities and mostly decomposed into fine particles, and the content of clay particles reached an extreme value. The total nitrogen, phosphorus, and calcium carbonate content exceeded the average value of the natural profile, indicating that ancient humans had used human and animal feces to a certain extent to restore the fertility of arable land.Discussion: Overall, ancient human activities hindered the development of the soil, especially the ground created due to habitation activities. From the type and content of clay minerals, it could be seen that the soil in this layer has been transported from other places, has a high content of clay particles, and has experienced fire baking. It was assumed that the ground was used to cover the grain or bury the garbage and lay with clay in order to achieve the effect of sealing. As a result, the soil voids and structure had been damaged to some extent, which prevented the downward leaching or precipitation of soil particles and minerals to a certain extent, thus affecting soil development.

Understanding filamentous cyanobacteria and their adaptive niches in Lake Honghu, a shallow eutrophic lake

Freshwater lakes globally are witnessing an escalation in the frequency and intensity of cyanobacterial harmful blooms. However, underlying factors influencing the succession or coexistence of cyanobacteria, especially filamentous ones, remain poorly understood. Lake Honghu, a Ramsar Wetland of International Importance with degrading aquatic ecological quality, served as a case study to elucidate the intricate relationship between environmental changes and cyanobacterial dynamics. Our analysis revealed a significant increase in the dominance of filamentous cyanobacteria, marked by high spatiotemporal variability in community structure. This dominance of filamentous diazotrophic cyanobacteria is attributed to a decrease in the ratio of dissolved inorganic nitrogen to total phosphorus and their capacity to utilize organic phosphorus in phosphorus-deficient conditions. Species-specific density variations were linked to diverse environmental factors, with total nitrogen or total phosphorus concentration remaining as a crucial factor influencing dominant cyanobacterial density fluctuations. The dominance of low-temperature-tolerant Aphanizomenon and Pseudanabaena was evident in spring and winter, whereas Dolichospermum and Cylindrospermopsis, which prefer higher temperatures, thrived in summer and autumn. Additionally, non-algal turbidity and heterogeneity can potentially alter the competitive outcome among filamentous cyanobacteria or foster coexistence under conditions of elevated temperatures and nutrient limitation. This study predicts that filamentous cyanobacteria may spread and persist in lakes spanning a wide trophic range. Current findings enhance our comprehension of the dynamic responses exhibited by filamentous bloom-forming cyanobacteria in the face of environmental changes within shallow eutrophic lakes and provide valuable insights for lake managers involved in the remediation of degraded shallow lakes.

An Investigation of Cyanobacteria, Cyanotoxins and Environmental Variables in Selected Drinking Water Treatment Plants in New Jersey

Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) have the potential to impact human health primarily through their possible cyanotoxins production. While conventional water treatments can result in the removal of unlysed cyanobacterial cells and low levels of cyanotoxins, during severe HAB events, cyanotoxins can break through and can be present in the treated water due to a lack of adequate toxin treatment. The objective of this study was to assess the HAB conditions in drinking water sources in New Jersey and investigate relationships between environmental variables and cyanobacterial communities in these drinking water sources. Source water samples were collected monthly from May to October 2019 and analyzed for phytoplankton and cyanobacterial cell densities, microcystins, cylindrospermopsin, Microcystis 16S rRNA gene, microcystin-producing mcyB gene, Raphidiopsis raciborskii-specificrpoC1 gene, and cylindrospermopsin-producing pks gene. Water quality parameters included water temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, specific conductance, fluorescence of phycocyanin and chlorophyll, chlorophyll-a, total suspended solids, total dissolved solids, dissolved organic carbon, total nitrogen, ammonia, and total phosphorus. In addition to source waters, microcystins and cylindrospermopsin were analyzed for treated waters. The results showed all five selected New Jersey source waters had high total phosphorus concentrations that exceeded the established New Jersey Surface Water Quality Standards for lakes and rivers. Commonly found cyanobacteria were identified, such as Microcystis and Dolichospermum. Site E was the site most susceptible to HABs with significantly greater HAB variables, such as extracted phycocyanin, fluorescence of phycocyanin, cyanobacterial cell density, microcystins, and Microcystis 16S rRNA gene. All treated waters were undetected with microcystins , indicating treatment processes were efficient at removing toxins from source waters. Results also showed that phycocyanin values had a significantly positive relationship with microcystin concentrations, Microcystis 16S rRNA gene copy numbers, and microcystin-producing mcyB gene copy numbers, suggesting these values can be used as a proxy for HAB monitoring. This study suggests that drinking water sources in New Jersey are vulnerable to forthcoming HAB. Monitoring and management of source waters is crucial to help safeguard public health.

Available nitrogen and enzyme activity in rhizosphere soil dominate the changes in fine-root nutrient foraging strategies during plantation development

The variation in fine-root traits in response to soil resources (i.e., fine-root nutrient foraging strategy) is critical for plants to adapt to environmental changes and even win in intra- or interspecific resource competition. However, the patterns and driving mechanisms that change in fine-root traits and nutrient foraging strategies during the development of plantations remain unclear. We analyzed the relationships among fine-root traits, rhizosphere soil nutrient variables, and enzyme activities at four stages of Pinus massoniana plantations: 18 years (young), 30 years (middle-aged), 43 years (mature), and 63 years (overmature). We found that specific root area (SRA) and specific root length (SRL), which represent the speed of nutrient acquisition, decreased with stand development. Root tissue density (RTD) and specific root tip number (SRT), which represent the cost of nutrient foraging, decreased with stand development after peaking in the mature and middle-aged forests, respectively. Compared with young stands, fine-root organic carbon and total phosphorus contents decreased by 23 % in the overmature forest, but total nitrogen increased by nearly 50 %. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that those fine-root traits significantly varied from young to overmature stands on PC1, and such a shift was consistent with changes in the growth period from fast (in the young forest) to slow (in the overmature forest) for P. massoniana. We suggest that those changes in fine-root traits along the PC1 represents a change in the fine-root foraging strategy of P. massoniana. This strategy (i.e., PC1) was negatively correlated with rhizosphere soil total nutrients (i.e., soil organic carbon and total nitrogen) and carbon (C)-nitrogen (N)-phosphorus (P) stoichiometry but positively correlated with available carbon, nitrogen, and C and N cycling-related enzyme activities. Specifically, the variation in rhizosphere soil NH4+ had the highest amount of explication (72 %) for the variation in the root nutrient foraging strategy. These results demonstrate that the intensity of the fine-root response to soil resources is related to the structure of rhizosphere soil available nutrients (especially soil available nitrogen) as well as carbon and nitrogen conversion enzyme activities during plantation development. Such relationships can reshape fine-root traits and change the fine-root nutrient foraging strategies during the development of plantations

Seasonal Monitoring Method for TN and TP Based on Airborne Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Images

Airborne sensing images harness the combined advantages of hyperspectral and high spatial resolution, offering precise monitoring methods for local-scale water quality parameters in small water bodies. This study employs airborne hyperspectral remote sensing image data to explore remote sensing estimation methods for total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) concentrations in Lake Dianshan, Yuandang, as well as its main inflow and outflow rivers. Our findings reveal the following: (1) Spectral bands between 700 and 750 nm show the highest correlation with TN and TP concentrations during the summer and autumn seasons. Spectral reflectance bands exhibit greater sensitivity to TN and TP concentrations compared to the winter and spring seasons. (2) Seasonal models developed using the Catboost method demonstrate significantly higher accuracy than other machine learning (ML) models. On the test set, the root mean square errors (RMSEs) are 0.6 mg/L for TN and 0.05 mg/L for TP concentrations, with average absolute percentage errors (MAPEs) of 23.77% and 25.14%, respectively. (3) Spatial distribution maps of the retrieved TN and TP concentrations indicate their dependence on exogenous inputs and close association with algal blooms. Higher TN and TP concentrations are observed near the inlet (Jishui Port), with reductions near the outlet (Lanlu Port), particularly for the TP concentration. Areas with intense algal blooms near shorelines generally exhibit higher TN and TP concentrations. This study offers valuable insights for processing small water bodies using airborne hyperspectral remote sensing images and provides reliable remote sensing techniques for lake water quality monitoring and management.

Intensive Microalgal Cultivation and Tertiary Phosphorus Recovery from Wastewaters via the EcoRecover Process.

Mixed community microalgal wastewater treatment technologies have the potential to advance the limits of technology for biological nutrient recovery while producing a renewable carbon feedstock, but a deeper understanding of their performance is required for system optimization and control. In this study, we characterized the performance of a 568 m3·day-1 Clearas EcoRecover system for tertiary phosphorus removal (and recovery as biomass) at an operating water resource recovery facility (WRRF). The process consists of a (dark) mix tank, photobioreactors (PBRs), and a membrane tank with ultrafiltration membranes for the separation of hydraulic and solids residence times. Through continuous online monitoring, long-term on-site monitoring, and on-site batch experiments, we demonstrate (i) the importance of carbohydrate storage in PBRs to support phosphorus uptake under dark conditions in the mix tank and (ii) the potential for polyphosphate accumulation in the mixed algal communities. Over a 3-month winter period with limited outside influences (e.g., no major upstream process changes), the effluent total phosphorus (TP) concentration was 0.03 ± 0.03 mg-P·L-1 (0.01 ± 0.02 mg-P·L-1 orthophosphate). Core microbial community taxa included Chlorella spp., Scenedesmus spp., and Monoraphidium spp., and key indicators of stable performance included near-neutral pH, sufficient alkalinity, and a diel rhythm in dissolved oxygen.

Management of eutrophication using combined the “flock &amp; sink” mitigation technique and submerged plants restoration: a mesocosm study

Abstract Currently, the issue of eutrophication and cyanobacterial blooms persists in water bodies worldwide, prompting the exploration of various treatment methods. This study conducted a comparative analysis of eutrophic water bodies using ferric chloride-modified zeolite (FMZ) and calcium hydroxide-modified zeolite (CMZ) combined with Elodeanuttallii (E. nuttallii) for removal and purification effects. The results revealed that the addition of E. nuttallii had a sustained inhibitory effect on phosphorus release, maintaining stability with lower Turbidity(Tur) and stabilized pH within the range of 8.5-9. FMZ demonstrated rapid reduction in dissolved phosphorus concentration, achieving a removal rate of 96% within 3 days. The combined plant group of CMZ and FMZ exhibited synergistic effects with E. nuttallii, achieving an impressive total phosphorus (TP) removal rate of 80.13% and a total nitrogen (TN) removal rate of 48.77%. Additionally, chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration decreased from 100.74 ± 24.72 μg/L to 49.96 ± 2.08 μg/L. The phytoplankton community composition indicated that diatoms thrived in low temperatures and high NH4 conditions. Under the same low Total Nitrogen to Total Phosphorus (TN:TP) ratio, high TP concentrations were associated with cyanobacteria dominance, while green algae dominated in other scenarios. This comprehensive approach demonstrates the potential efficacy of CMZ and FMZ combined with E. nuttallii in addressing eutrophic water bodies and mitigating cyanobacterial blooms.

Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria Influence Microbial Community Composition and Metabolic Function to Enhance the Efficiency of Hybrid pennisetum Remediation in Cadmium-Contaminated Soil

The green and efficient remediation of soil cadmium (Cd) is an urgent task, and plant-microbial joint remediation has become a research hotspot due to its advantages. High-throughput sequencing and metabolomics have technical advantages in analyzing the microbiological mechanism of plant growth-promoting bacteria in improving phytoremediation of soil heavy metal pollution. In this experiment, a pot trial was conducted to investigate the effects of inoculating the plant growth-promoting bacterium Enterobacter sp. VY on the growth and Cd remediation efficiency of the energy plant Hybrid pennisetum. The test strain VY-1 was analyzed using high-throughput sequencing and metabolomics to assess its effects on microbial community composition and metabolic function. The results demonstrated that Enterobacter sp. VY-1 effectively mitigated Cd stress on Hybrid pennisetum, resulting in increased plant biomass, Cd accumulation, and translocation factor, thereby enhancing phytoremediation efficiency. Analysis of soil physical-chemical properties revealed that strain VY-1 could increase soil total nitrogen, total phosphorus, available phosphorus, and available potassium content. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) indicated that strain VY-1 significantly influenced bacterial community composition, with Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Chloroflexi, among others, being the main differential taxa. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that available phosphorus, available potassium, and pH were the primary factors affecting bacterial communities. Partial Least Squares Discriminant Analysis (PLS-DA) demonstrated that strain VY-1 modulated the metabolite profile of Hybrid pennisetum rhizosphere soil, with 27 differential metabolites showing significant differences, including 19 up-regulated and eight down-regulated expressions. These differentially expressed metabolites were primarily involved in metabolism and environmental information processing, encompassing pathways such as glutamine and glutamate metabolism, α-linolenic acid metabolism, pyrimidine metabolism, and purine metabolism. This study utilized 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing and metabolomics technology to investigate the impact of the plant growth-promoting bacterium Enterobacter sp. VY-1 on the growth and Cd enrichment of Hybrid pennisetum, providing insights into the regulatory role of plant growth-promoting bacteria in microbial community structure and metabolic function, thereby improving the microbiological mechanisms of phytoremediation.

Response of Soil Fungal-Community Structure to Crop-Tree Thinning in Pinus massoniana Plantation

To address the ecological challenges arising from pure forest plantations and the wood supply–demand imbalance, implementing sustainable forest management is paramount. Accordingly, we studied crop trees at three densities (100, 150, and 200 N/ha) in a subtropical Pinus massoniana plantation. Our study revealed that the dominant phyla and genera within the fungal community remained largely consistent, with Basidiomycota and Ascomycota occupying prominent positions. Notably, the β diversity of the fungal community exhibited significant changes. Ectomycorrhizal and saprophytic fungi emerged as crucial functional guilds, and crop-tree thinning contributed to increased complexity within the fungal network, with a prevalence of positive rather than negative correlations among genera. The significant roles played by Camphor plants and ferns were evident in the fungal networks. Additionally, under crop-tree thinning, plant diversity experienced a significant boost, fostering interactions with the fungal community. Herb diversity played a vital role in the fungal community, affecting it either directly or indirectly, by altering the content of total phosphorus or organic matter in the soil. This study underscores the relationship between undergrowth plants and soil fungal communities, offering a scientific basis for evaluating the sustainability of restoring inefficient forest-plantation ecosystems.

Monitoring Total Phosphorus Concentration in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River Using Sentinel-2 Satellites

Total phosphorus (TP, a non-optical sensitivity parameter) has become the primary pollutant in the Yangtze River, the third largest river in the world. It is strongly correlated with turbidity (an optical sensitivity parameter) in rivers. In this study, we constructed a turbidity-mediated TP retrieval model using Sentinel-2 observations and field-measured daily-scale water quality. The model was successfully applied to estimate the temporal and spatial variations of TP concentration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River (MYR) from 2020 to 2023. Our results show: (1) the model accuracy of TP concentration retrieval with turbidity is significantly higher (R2 = 0.71, MAPE = 15.78%) than that for the model without turbidity (R2 = 0.62, MAPE = 16.38%); (2) the turbidity and TP concentration in the MYR is higher in summer and autumn than in winter and spring; and (3) the turbidity and total phosphorus (TP) concentration of the Yangtze River showed a significant increase after passing through Dongting Lake (p &lt; 0.05).

Prediction models for bioavailability of Cu and Zn during composting: Insights into machine learning

Bioavailability assessment of heavy metals in compost products is crucial for evaluating associated environmental risks. However, existing experimental methods are time-consuming and inefficient. The machine learning (ML) method has demonstrated excellent performance in predicting heavy metal fractions. In this study, based on the conventional physicochemical properties of 260 compost samples, including compost time, temperature, electrical conductivity (EC), pH, organic matter (OM), total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen, and total heavy metal contents, back propagation neural network, gradient boosting regression, and random forest (RF) models were used to predict the dynamic changes in bioavailable fractions of Cu and Zn during composting. All three models could be used for effective prediction of the variation trend in bioavailable fractions of Cu and Zn; the RF model showed the best prediction performance, with the prediction level higher than that reported in related studies. Although the key factors affecting changes among fractions were different, OM, EC, and TP were important for the accurate prediction of bioavailable fractions of Cu and Zn. This study provides simple and efficient ML models for predicting bioavailable fractions of Cu and Zn during composting, and offers a rapid evaluation method for the safe application of compost products.

Using Bottom Marine Sediments as Environmental Indicator State of (Tolmaitha – Toukra) Region at Eastern North Coast of Libya

This study was carried out on sediment samples collected from the region extended between Tolmaitha and Toukra towns at (Libya) North eastern coast. The study aimed to use the marine sediment as indicator pollution of the studied area. Different heavy metals of (Fe‚ Mn‚ Zn‚ Cu‚ pb‚ Cd‚ Co and Cr) beside the organic matter (O.M)‚ Total phosphorus (T.P) and total nitrogen (T.N) were determined. The results showed variations in concentrations of total phosphorus (T.P) contents and ranged between (0.0037-0.319 ppm) and (0.007-0.240 ppm) during winter and summer seasons‚ respectively. The total nitrogen contents were fluctuated in the ranges of (0.0017-0.370 ppm) and (0.014 – 710ppm) during winter and summer seasons‚ respectively. Also the results showed that the organic matter (O.M) values were ranged between (0.072-0.720%) and (0.097-0.502%) during winter and summer seasons‚ respectively. The contents of heavy metals in sediment samples during summer season were ranged as follows:(16.5 – 398.1 µg/g)¸ (10.436 – 33.879 µg/g)¸ (13.8 – 287.6 µg/g)¸ (0.78 – 31.56 µg/g)¸ (1.34 – 46.72 µg/g)¸ (2.36 – 128.76 µg/g)¸ (9.15 – 28.16 µg/g)¸ (2.17 – 323.41 µg/g) ¸ for Fe¸ Mn¸ Zn¸ Cu¸ Pb¸ Cd¸ Co¸ and Cr¸ respectively. The results showed high values of calcium in the studied sediment samples compared to the potassium and sodium contents. The results of the studied gave indication that area under investigated contain high values of heavy metals, total phosphorus and total nitrogen, this is mainly attribute to the human activities at the studied locations.
