Modeling the molecular composition of secondary organic aerosol under highly polluted conditions: A case study in the Yangtze River Delta Region in China

A near-explicit mechanism, the master chemical mechanism (MCMv3.3.1), coupled with the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model (CMAQ-MCM-SOA), was applied to investigate the characteristics of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) during a pollution event in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in summer 2018. Model performances in predicting explicit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), organic aerosol (OA), secondary organic carbon (SOC), and other related pollutants in Taizhou, as well as ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in multiple cities in this region, were evaluated against observations and model predictions by the CMAQ model coupled with a lumped photochemical mechanism (SAPRC07tic, S07). MCM and S07 exhibited similar performances in predicting gaseous species, while MCM better captured the observed PM2.5 and inorganic aerosols. Both models underpredicted OA concentrations. When excluding data during biomass burning events, SOC concentrations were underpredicted by the CMAQ-MCM-SOA model (−28.4 %) and overpredicted by the CMAQ-S07 model (134.4 %), with better agreement with observations in the trend captured by the CMAQ-MCM-SOA model. Dicarbonyl SOA accounted for a significant fraction of total SOA in the YRD, while organic nitrates originating from aromatics were the most abundant species contributing to the SOA formation from gas-particle partitioning. The oxygen-to‑carbon ratio (O/C) for SOA and OA were 0.68–0.75 and 0.20–0.65, respectively, indicating a higher oxidation state in the areas influenced by biogenic emissions. Finally, the phase state of SOA was examined by calculating the glass transition temperature (Tg) based on its molecular composition. It was found that semi-solid state characterized SOA in the YRD, which could potentially impact their chemical transformation and lifetimes along with those of their precursors.

Spatial Variability and Source Apportionment of PM2.5 Carbon Components in Tianjin

The contents of eight carbonaceous subfractions were determined by simultaneously collecting PM2.5 samples from four sites in different functional areas of Tianjin in 2021. The results showed that the organic carbon (OC) concentration was 3.7 μg·m-3 to 4.4 μg·m-3, and the elemental carbon (EC) concentration was 1.6 μg·m-3 to 1.7 μg·m-3, with the highest OC concentration in the central urban area. There was no significant difference in EC concentration. The concentration of PM2.5 showed the distribution characteristics of the surrounding city>central city>peripheral area. The OC/EC minimum ratio method was used to estimate the concentrations of secondary organic carbon (SOC) in PM2.5, and the results showed that the secondary pollution was more prominent in the surrounding city, with SOC accounting for 48.8%. The correlation between carbon subcomponents in each functional area showed the characteristics of the peripheral area>central area>surrounding area, all showing the strongest correlation between EC1 and OC2 and EC1 and OC4. By including the carbon component concentration into the positive definite matrix factorization (PMF) model for source apportionment, the results showed that road dust sources(9.7%-23.5%), coal-combustion sources (10.2%-13.3%), diesel vehicle exhaust (12.6%-20.2%)and gasoline vehicle exhaust (18.9%-38.8%)were the main sources of carbon components in PM2.5 in Tianjin. The pollution sources of carbon components were different in different functional areas, with the central city and peripheral areas mainly affected by gasoline vehicle exhaust; the surrounding city was more prominently affected by the secondary pollution and diesel vehicle exhaust.

Characteristics and Source Analysis of Carbonaceous Aerosols in PM2.5 in Huaxi District, Guiyang

Carbonaceous aerosol, as an important component of atmospheric aerosol, has a significant impact on atmospheric environmental quality, human health, and global climate change. To investigate the characteristics and sources of carbonaceous aerosol in atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Huaxi District of Guiyang, an in-situ observational study was conducted during different seasons in 2020, and the carbonaceous components of PM2.5 were measured using a thermal-optical carbon analyzer (DRI Model 2015). The results of the study showed that the average concentrations of PM2.5, total carbonaceous aerosol (TCA), organic carbon (OC), secondary organic carbon (SOC), and elemental carbon (EC) concentrations during the observation period were (39.7±22.3), (14.1±7.2), (7.6±3.9), (4.4±2.6), and (2.0±1.0) μg·m-3, respectively, and the mean value of OC/EC was (3.9±0.8). ρ(PM2.5), ρ(TCA), ρ(OC), ρ(SOC), and ρ(EC) showed a seasonal variation pattern with the highest in winter [(52.6±28.6), (17.0±9.6), (9.1±5.2), (6.1±3.9), and (2.4±1.2) μg·m-3, respectively] and the lowest in summer [(25.1±7.1), (11.6±3.6), (6.3±1.9), (3.7±1.2), and (1.6±0.6) μg·m-3, respectively]. The seasonal variation in OC/EC showed summer (4.2±0.8) > winter (3.8±0.9) > autumn (3.8±0.5) > spring (3.7±0.9), indicating the presence of SOC generation in all seasons in Huaxi District. SOC showed a significant correlation with OC (R2 =0.9), and the SOC concentration tended to increase with the increase in atmospheric oxidation. OC showed a good correlation with EC in all seasons, with the highest in autumn (R2 =0.9) and lower correlations in the other three seasons (R2 ranged from 0.74 to 0.75), indicating a common source. According to OC/EC ratio range, it was preliminarily determined that carbonaceous aerosol came from vehicle exhaust emissions, coal burning emissions, and biomass combustion emissions. In order to further quantify the contribution of major emission sources to carbonaceous aerosol, the results of this study using PMF to analyze the sources of carbonaceous aerosol showed that the main sources of carbonaceous aerosol in Huaxi District of Guiyang were coal combustion sources (29.3%), motor vehicle emission sources (21.5%), and biomass combustion sources (49.2%).

Characteristics and Source Apportionment of Carbonaceous Aerosols in the Typical Urban Areas in Chongqing During Winter

To investigate the characteristics, source apportionment, and potential source areas of carbonaceous aerosols in Chongqing during winter, PM2.5 samples were collected from January 2021 to February 2021 in the urban areas of Wanzhou (WZ), Yubei (YB), and Shuangqiao (SQ). The results showed that the average mass concentrations of PM2.5, OC, and EC in SQ were (72.6 ±33.3), (18.2 ±8.2), and (4.4 ±1.7) μg·m-3, respectively, higher than those in WZ[(67.2 ±30.3), (17.2 ±7.4), and (5.1 ±2.4) μg·m-3] and YB[(63.4 ±25.7), (15.4 ±6.3), and (4.2 ±1.9) μg·m-3]. Compared with that during the clear period, the concentration and fraction of EC in total carbon increased by 103.0% and 8.1%, respectively, in WZ compared to that in other areas during pollution period, whereas the OC/EC ratio was decreased significantly (-10.5%), indicating that the primary emission of carbonaceous aerosols increased significantly during the pollution period. The average mass concentrations of secondary organic carbon (SOC) in SQ and YB were (7.7 ±4.8) μg·m-3 and (6.9 ±2.8) μg·m-3 significantly higher, respectively, than that in WZ[(4.5 ±1.9) μg·m-3] during the campaign. This indicated that the secondary transformation had a greater influence on the carbonaceous aerosols in SQ and YB than that in WZ. Furthermore, in contrast to that in WZ, the ratios of SOC/OC were increased with the increase in PM2.5 concentrations, and significant correlations between SOC concentration and aerosol water content, NO2 concentration, and the value of NOR were observed in SQ and YB (P < 0.01), indicating that the increasing of carbonaceous aerosol concentrations might be mainly driven by the SOC with -NO2 groups produced by aqueous chemical reactions during winter in SQ and YB. The positive definite matrix factor (PMF) results in these urban areas showed that the contribution of biomass/coal combustion source in WZ (47.4%) was significantly higher than that in YB (34.2%) and SQ (38.1%), whereas the gasoline motor vehicle emission and secondary transformation impacts were more significant in YB. The results of the concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) showed that the potential sources of carbonaceous aerosols were mainly the local and northeastern parts of these urban areas (such as Changshou).

Diurnal Variations in High Time-Resolved Molecular Distributions and Formation Mechanisms of Biogenic Secondary Organic Aerosols at Mt. Huang, East China.

The molecular characteristics and formation mechanism of biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOAs) in the forested atmosphere are poorly known. Here, we report the temporal variations in and formation processes of BSOA tracers derived from isoprene, monoterpenes, and β caryophyllene in PM2.5 samples collected at the foot of Mt. Huang (483 m a. s. l) in East China during the summer of 2019 with a 3 h time resolution. The concentrations of nearly all of the detected species, including organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), levoglucosan, and SIA (sum of SO42-, NO3-, and NH4+), were higher at night (19:00-7:00 of the next day) than in the daytime (7:00-19:00). In addition, air pollutants that accumulated by the dynamic transport of the mountain breeze at night were also a crucial reason for the higher BSOA tracers. Most of the BSOA tracers exhibited higher concentrations at night than in the daytime and peaked at 1:00 to 4:00 or 4:00 to 7:00. Those BSOA tracers presented strong correlations with O3 in the daytime rather than at night, indicating that BSOAs in the daytime were primarily derived from the photo-oxidation of BVOCs with O3. The close correlations of BSOA tracers with SO42- and particle acidity (pHis) suggest that BSOAs were primarily derived from the acid-catalyzed aqueous-phase oxidation. Considering the higher relative humidity and LWC concentration at night, the promoted aqueous oxidation was the essential reason for the higher concentrations of BSOA tracers at night. Moreover, levoglucosan exhibited a robust correlation with BSOA tracers, especially β-caryophyllinic acid, suggesting that biomass burning from long-distance transport exerted a significant impact on BSOA formation. Based on a tracer-based method, the estimated concentrations of secondary organic carbon (SOC) derived from isoprene, monoterpenes, and β caryophyllene at night (0.90 ± 0.57 µgC m-3) were higher than those (0.53 ± 0.34 µgC m-3) in the daytime, accounting for 14.5 ± 8.5% and 12.2 ± 5.0% of OC, respectively. Our results reveal that the BSOA formation at the foot of Mt. Huang was promoted by the mountain-valley breezes and anthropogenic pollutants from long-range transport.

Distribution characteristics of secondary organic aerosol tracers in PM2.5 in Jinzhong

In this study, 13 secondary organic aerosol (SOA) tracers in PM2.5 were measured in Jinzhong, Shanxi, to investigate the distribution characteristics of SOAs. According to the results, isoprene SOA tracers had the highest annual average concentration at 7.35 ± 14.23 ng/m3, accounting for 57.8% of all tracers by concentration, followed by β-caryophyllene SOA tracer (3.53 ± 2.67 ng/m3, 22.6%), α/β-pinene SOA tracers (2.68 ± 2.23 ng/m3, 18.9%) and toluene SOA tracer (0.11 ± 0.08 ng/m3, 0.7%). The concentrations of isoprene and α/β-pinene SOA tracers in summer and autumn were higher than those in winter and spring, whereas the concentration of β-caryophyllene SOA tracer was higher in autumn and winter than in spring and summer. However, no statistically significant seasonal variation was observed in the concentration of the toluene SOA tracer. According to results for pinolic acid and 3-methyl-1,2,3-butanetricarboxylic acid, α/β-pinene SOA tracers in Jinzhong were fresh in winter and the contribution ratio of β-pinene to SOA formation was higher than that of α-pinene. A correlation analysis also indicated that the high concentrations of isoprene and α/β-pinene SOA tracers in summer were correlated with temperature, whereas the high concentration of the β-caryophyllene SOA tracer in autumn and winter was primarily correlated with biomass burning. According to tracer yield estimation results, plant-derived volatile organic compounds were the main source of SOAs in PM2.5 in Jinzhong, with a contribution ratio of 94%. Isoprene contributed the most to secondary organic carbon concentrations in spring and summer, whereas β-caryophyllene contributed the most in autumn and winter.

Comparison and implications of the carbonaceous fractions under different environments in polluted central plains in China: Insight from the lockdown of COVID-19 outbreak

Before and during the COVID-19 outbreak in the heated winter season of 2019, the carbonaceous fractions including organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), OC1–4, and EC1–5 were investigated between normal (November 1, 2019, to January 24, 2020) and lockdown (January 25, to February 29, 2020) periods in polluted regions of northern Henan Province. In comparison to urban site, four rural sites showed higher concentrations of carbonaceous components, especially secondary OC (SOC); the concentration of SOC in rural sites was 1.5–3.4 times that in the urban site. During the lockdown period, SOC in urban site decreased slightly, while it increased significantly in rural sites. NO2 has a significant effect on SOC generation, particularly in normal period when NO2 concentrations were high. Nevertheless, NO2 significantly decreased, and the elevated O3 (increased by 103–138%) contributed considerably to the generation of SOC during lockdown. Relative humidity (RH) promoted SOC production when RH was below 60%, but SOC was negatively correlated or uncorrelated with RH when RH exceeded 60%. Additionally, RH has a more pronounced effect on SOC during lockdown. The contribution of gasoline vehicle emissions decreases significantly in both urban and rural sites (3–12%) due to the significant reduction of anthropogenic activities during lockdown, although the urban site remained with the biggest contributions (37%). These results provide innovative insights into the variations in carbonaceous aerosols and SOC generation during the unique time when anthropogenic sources were significantly reduced and illustrate the differences in pollution characteristics and sources of carbonaceous fractions in different environments.

Size distributions of molecular markers for biogenic secondary organic aerosol in urban Beijing

To understand the source, formation, and seasonality of biogenic secondary organic aerosol (BSOA), a nine-stage cascade impactor was utilized to collect size-segregated particulate samples from April 2017 to January 2018 in Beijing, China. BSOA tracers derived from isoprene, monoterpene, and sesquiterpene were measured with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Isoprene and monoterpene SOA tracers exhibited significant seasonal variations, with a summer maximum and a winter minimum. Dominance of 2-methyltetrols (isoprene SOA tracers) with a good correlation with levoglucosan (a biomass burning tracer), which was combined with the detection of methyltartaric acids (possible indicators for aged isoprene) in summer, implies possible biomass burning and long-range transport. In contrast, sesquiterpene SOA tracer (β-caryophyllinic acid) was dominant in winter and was probably associated with the local burning of biomass. Bimodal size distributions were observed for most isoprene SOA tracers, consistent with previous laboratory experiments and field studies showing that they can be formed not only in the aerosol phase but also in the gas phase. Monoterpene SOA tracers cis-pinonic acid and pinic acid showed a coarse-mode peak (5.8–9.0 μm) in four seasons due to their volatile nature. Sesquiterpene SOA tracer β-caryophyllinic acid showed a unimodal pattern with a major fine-mode peak (1.1–2.1 μm), which is linked to local biomass burning. The tracer-yield method was used to quantify the contributions of isoprene, monoterpene, and sesquiterpene to secondary organic carbon (SOC) and SOA. The highest isoprene SOC and SOA concentrations occurred in summer (2.00 μgC m−3 and 4.93 μg m−3, respectively), contributing to 1.61% of OC and 5.22% of PM2.5, respectively. These results suggest that BSOA tracers are promising tracers for understanding the source, formation, and seasonality of BSOA.

Secondary formation and source analysis of carbonaceous components in PM1 in a typical city, Southwest of China

Carbonaceous components are major components of PM1, which have a significant impact on climate change, air quality and human health. However, the secondary formation and source analysis of carbonaceous components in PM1 are still unclear. Therefore, in order to study the secondary formation and sources of carbonaceous components in PM1, PM1 samples were collected in Chengdu, a typical city located in southwest of China, from 2018 to 2019. The concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and isotopic compositions of carbon (δ13C) in PM1 were determined using a thermal/optical carbon analyzer and elemental analyzer-isotope ratio mass spectrometer. In addition, the δ13C values from relevant potential sources (C3 plants, C4 plants, vehicle exhaust and coal) were also determined. The results showed that the annual average concentrations of OC and EC in PM1 in Chengdu were 6.43 ± 3.30 μg·m−3 and 1.99 ± 0.98 μg·m−3, accounting for 13.83% and 4.28% of the PM1 mass concentration, respectively. The concentrations of OC in PM1 ranked in the order of winter > summer > spring > autumn, while the concentrations of EC varied in the order of winter > spring > autumn > summer. The concentrations of OC and EC in PM1 reached the maximum in winter, mainly due to the special meteorological conditions and significantly higher pollutant emissions. The correlations of OC and EC were higher in spring, autumn and winter, and lower in summer. It showed that OC and EC might have the same sources in spring, autumn and winter, while the sources of OC and EC were relatively complex in summer. The annual average concentration of secondary organic carbon (SOC) in PM1 was 2.23 ± 1.22 μg·m−3. The concentrations of SOC were higher in autumn and winter and lower in spring and summer. The special meteorological conditions and significantly higher pollutant emissions are important reasons for the higher SOC concentrations in winter. On the other hand, the low temperature in winter can also promote the formation of SOC. The results of carbon isotopic compositions indicated that the carbonaceous components in PM1 were mainly derived from vehicle exhaust (52.4%), C3 plants combustion (26.2%), coal burning (16.2%) and C4 plants combustion (5.2%). The findings help to deepen the understanding of the secondary formation and sources of carbonaceous components in PM1 and provide theoretical guidance for environmental management.

Molecular characteristics, sources and influencing factors of isoprene and monoterpenes secondary organic aerosol tracers in the marine atmosphere over the Arctic Ocean

Biogenic secondary organic aerosols (BSOA) are important components of the remote marine atmosphere. However, the response of BSOA changes to sea ice reduction over the Arctic Ocean remains unclear. Here we investigated isoprene and monoterpenes secondary organic aerosol (SOAI and SOAM) tracers in three years of summer aerosol samples collected from the Arctic Ocean atmosphere. The results indicated that methyltetrols were the most abundant SOAI tracers, while the main oxidation products of monoterpenes varied over the years owing to different aerosol aging. The results of the principal component analysis (PCA)-generalized additive model (GAM) combined with correlation analysis suggested that SOAI tracers were mainly generated by the oxidation of isoprene from marine emissions, while SOAM tracers were probably more influenced by terrestrial transport. Estimation of secondary organic carbon (SOC) indicated that monoterpenes oxidation contributed more than isoprene and that sea ice changes had a relatively small effect on biogenic SOC concentration levels. Our study quantified the contribution of influencing factors to the atmospheric concentration of BSOA tracers in the Arctic Ocean, and showed that there were differences in the sources of precursors for different BSOA. Hence, our findings have contributed to a better understanding of the characteristics, sources and formation of SOA in the atmosphere of the Arctic Ocean.

Secondary organic carbon in different atmospheric environments of a continental region and seasons

Secondary organic carbon (SOC) was derived using elemental carbon (EC) tracer method for primary organic carbon (OC) in daily aerosol samples collected in the regional background environment, suburban area, and central part of Budapest in each season. The estimation approaches of the OC/EC ratio for the major emission sources required for the tracer method were discussed, and the high EC edge approach was adopted separately for each location and season. The annual mean SOC concentrations in the environments listed were 1.16, 1.51 and 1.42 μg m−3, respectively. They were interpreted together with the PM2.5 mass, OC, EC, water-soluble OC (WSOC), levoglucosan (LVG) and meteorological variables. The annual mean contributions of SOC to OC were 45% at all sampling sites. However, they showed substantial seasonal variation at each location. The shares were the smallest (<≈30%) in winter, whereas they prevailed in summer (in the regional background, this even reached 66%). The secondary organic aerosol (obtained by multiplying the SOC concentrations by the organic mass-to-OC correction factor) made up roughly 25% of the PM2.5 mass except for winter, when it was 10%. Obvious associations of the SOC on the one side and PM2.5 mass, OC and WSOC on the other side were identified as joint relationships for all seasons. The SOC correlated with LVG only in winter when the relative intensity of biomass burning is the highest, and with O3 only in spring and summer, when the role of photochemistry is considerable. Elevations in PM2.5 mass, OC and WSOC concentrations on a daily scale were related to the enhancement of SOC concentration by factors of 0.14, 0.4 and 0.6, respectively, while higher LVG levels in winter enlarged the SOC 3-times. There was a relationship between the SOC and OC from fossil fuel combustion over all seasons, whereas the dependency between the SOC and OC from biomass burning could be established only in winter, and between the SOC and OC from biogenic sources apart from winter. The results and conclusions have importance for the health consequences of SOC in cities and rural areas over the whole Carpathian Basin.

Tracer-based characterization of fine carbonaceous aerosol in Beijing during a strict emission control period

Strict emission controls were implemented in Beijing and the surrounding regions in the North China Plain to guarantee good air quality during the 2014 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit. Thus, the APEC period provides a good opportunity to study the sources and formation processes of atmospheric organic aerosol. Here, fine particles (PM2.5, particulate matter with a diameter of 2.5 μm or less) collected in urban Beijing before and during the APEC period were analyzed for molecular tracers of primary and secondary organic aerosol (SOA). The primary organic carbon (POC) and secondary organic carbon (SOC) were also reconstructed using a tracer-based method. The concentrations of biogenic SOA tracers ranged from 1.09 to 34.5 ng m−3 (mean 10.3 ± 8.51 ng m−3). Monoterpene oxidation products were the largest contributor to biogenic SOA, followed by isoprene- and sesquiterpene-derived SOA. The concentrations of biogenic SOA tracers decreased by 50 % during the APEC, which was largely attributed to the implementation of emission controls by the Chinese government. The increasing mass fractions of biogenic SOA tracers from isoprene and sesquiterpene during the pollution episodes implied that their photooxidation processes contributed to the poor air quality in urban Beijing. The reconstructed biogenic and anthropogenic SOC and POC concentrations were 89.6 ± 96.8 ng m−3, 570 ± 611 ng m−3, and 2.49 ± 2.08 μg m−3, respectively, accounting for 21.9 ± 11.4 % of OC in total. Biomass-burning derived OC was the largest contributor to carbonaceous aerosol over the North China Plain. By comparing the results before and during the APEC, the emission controls effectively mitigated about 34 % of the estimated OC and were more effective at reducing SOC than POC. This suggests that the reduction of the primary organic aerosol loading is harder than SOA over the North China Plain.

Chemical characterization, source apportionment, and health risk assessment of PM2.5 in a typical industrial region in North China.

To clarify the chemical characteristics, source contributions, and health risks of pollution events associated with high PM2.5 in typical industrial areas of North China, manual sampling and analysis of PM2.5 were conducted in the spring, summer, autumn, and winter of 2019 in Pingyin County, Jinan City, Shandong Province. The results showed that the total concentration of 29 components in PM2.5 was 53.4 ± 43.9μg·m-3, including OC/EC, water-soluble ions, inorganic elements, and metal elements. The largest contribution was from the NO3- ion, at 14.6 ± 14.2μg·m-3, followed by organic carbon (OC), SO42-, and NH4+, with concentrations of 9.3 ± 5.5, 9.1 ± 6.4, and 8.1 ± 6.8μg·m-3, respectively. The concentrations of OC, NO3-, and SO42- were highest in winter and lowest in summer, whereas the NH4+ concentration was highest in winter and lowest in spring. Typical heavy metals had higher concentrations in autumn and winter, and lower concentrations in spring and summer. The annual average sulfur oxidation rate (SOR) and nitrogen oxidation rate (NOR) were 0.30 ± 0.14 and 0.21 ± 0.12, respectively, with the highest SO2 emission and conversion rates in winter, resulting in the SO42- concentration being highest in winter. The average concentration of secondary organic carbon in 2019 was 2.8 ± 1.9μg·m-3, and it comprised approximately 30% of total OC. The concentrations of 18 elements including Na, Mg, and Al were between 2.3 ± 1.6 and 888.1 ± 415.2ng·m-3, with Ni having the lowest concentration and K the highest. The health risk assessment for typical heavy metals showed that Pb poses a potential carcinogenic risk for adults, whereas As may pose a carcinogenic risk for adults, children, and adolescents. The non-carcinogenic risk coefficients for all heavy metals were lower than 1.0, indicating that the non-carcinogenic risk was negligible. Positive matrix factorization analysis indicated that coal-burning emissions contributed the largest fraction of PM2.5, accounting for 35.9% of the total. The contribution of automotive emissions is similar to that of coal, at 32.1%. The third-largest contributor was industrial sources, which accounted for 17.2%. The contributions of dust and other emissions sources to PM2.5 were 8.4% and 6.4%, respectively. This study provides reference data for policymakers to improve the air quality in the NCP.

Seasonal Variation in Chemical Composition of Total Suspended Particles During the COVID-19 Pandemic in the Source Area of Urumqi River, Tianshan, China

The research of atmospheric aerosol in mountain glacier areas has attracted more and more people’s attention. For the first time, a field observation study of total suspended particles (TSPs) for four seasons from September 2019 to August 2020 was carried out at the Tianshan Glaciological Station in the source area of Urumqi River, East Tianshan Mountains, China. The TSPs presented typical seasonal characteristics of high in autumn and low in winter, with the annual average value of 181 ± 170 μg m−3. Concentrations of Ca2+, SO42−, NO3−, Cl−, NH4+ and K+, OC, EC were elevated in autumn. The influence of stationary source emissions was stronger than mobile sources, which was explained by the average ratio of NO3−/SO42− (0.31 ± 0.17). The concentration of secondary organic carbon (SOC) was higher in summer and autumn, especially in summer, indicating that secondary formation processes of organic aerosols were frequent in summer. Impact of fossil fuel combustion sources were evident over the Glaciers, corroborated by the diagnostic mass ratios of OC/EC (0–21.4, 3.38) and K+/EC (0–0.31, 0.08). The factor analysis illustrated that aerosols were mainly affected by rock salt, dust, coal combustion, and automobile exhaust. The local sources made significant contributions to TSPs in the source of Urumqi River by the results of Results of Hybrid Single Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model and potential source contribution function (PSCF).

Assessment of carbonaceous aerosols in suburban Nanjing under air pollution control measures: Insights from long-term measurements

The concentrations of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) were analyzed using a semicontinuous carbon analyzer to characterize their carbonaceous components at the Nanjing University site from August 2013 to December 2018. OC was divided by the minimum R squared (MRS) method into primary organic carbon (POC) and secondary organic carbon (SOC). The results showed that annual mean POC and EC concentrations declined from 10.00 to 3.62 μg m−3 and from 6.73 to 3.40 μg m−3, respectively, during 2013–2018. The apparent reduction in POC and EC concentrations indicated that the implementation of air pollution control measures helped reduce carbonaceous aerosol pollution. Higher concentrations of POC and EC were recorded during the cold season and lower in the warm season. The annual mean SOC concentrations varied between 4.35 and 3.18 μg m−3 from 2013 to 2018. Elevated SOC was observed during the warm season, most likely attributable to the enhanced photochemical activity at high temperatures. Regarding the diurnal variation, the high concentrations of POC and EC were observed at night and in the morning due to stronger primary emissions and accumulations of pollutants with low boundary-layer heights, while the peak of SOC was observed at approximately noon due to the increases in photochemical activity. Nonparametric wind regression analysis showed the higher concentrations of POC, SOC and EC in the northwesterly, southwesterly to southeasterly, and southwesterly winds with high speeds. Concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) analysis suggests that the areas with potentially high contributions to POC and EC changed from the north to the western areas of China, and that northern China played an increasingly important role in the SOC concentration of Nanjing. These results demonstrate that controlling emissions from the western and the northern areas in China may further alleviate carbonaceous aerosol pollution in Nanjing.

Carbonaceous aerosols in five European cities: Insights into primary emissions and secondary particle formation

Carbonaceous material is an important component of atmospheric aerosol particles, which plays a significant role in air quality and climate, and also has potentially negative impacts on human health. There is a lack of data reported in the literature regarding the carbonaceous fraction of aerosol in the North-West European ‘air pollution hotspot’ and this work reports a comprehensive one-year intensive measurement campaign, where organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) fractions of PM10 (particulate matter of diameter ≤ 10 μm) were measured. Owing to the importance of carbonaceous aerosols in understanding particulate pollution sources, ~2000 PM10 samples were simultaneously collected across North-West Europe at four urban background sites located in Amsterdam (AD), Antwerp (AP), Leicester (LE) and Lille (LL), and one industrial site at Wijk aan Zee (WZ). PM10 samples were chemically analysed by OC-EC analyser for carbonaceous species (OC, and EC) and trends were identified. OC accounted for 12.8%, 13.9%, 15.3%, 15.1% and 9.8%, and EC accounted for 2.4%, 4.9%, 4.4%, 4.0%, and 2.4% of total PM10 mass for AD, AP, LE, LL and WZ, respectively. Secondary organic carbon (SOC) contributions were higher in warmer months compared to colder months, and SOC concentration levels were similar at all five locations, with SOC contributing more than primary organic aerosol (POC) in each city. The lower effective carbon ratio (ECR) values (≤0.3) at all five sites in October, November, and February can be attributed to higher combined POC and EC concentrations and lesser contributions from SOC, meaning that SOC with a greater relative formation has a greater tendency to disperse solar radiation. Higher ECR values in April, May, and July, on the other hand, indicate that more absorbing types of carbonaceous aerosols are also present. More than 90% of the air-mass trajectories were from the north and northeast. This paper details atmospheric processes and sources influencing the seasonal variability of the carbonaceous components of PM10.

Simultaneous Measurements of Carbonaceous Aerosol in Three Major Cities in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region, China

Simultaneous observations of carbonaceous aerosols in multiple cities are of great significance for a comprehensive understanding of the level of carbonaceous aerosol pollution in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. In this study, PM2.5 samples were collected simultaneously in Beijing (BJ), Tianjin (TJ), and Shijiazhuang (SJZ) during the 2017–2018 heating season, and the contents of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in the samples were measured. The mean mass concentrations were 10.15‒46.23 µg m–3 for OC, and 2.13‒10.42 µg m–3 for EC in three cities. SJZ had more serious carbonaceous aerosols pollution compared with BJ and TJ. The OC and EC levels in three cities, especially in Beijing, were significantly lower than those reported in previous studies, implying the effectivity of strict air pollution control measures in 2017. Based on the OC/EC minimum ratio method, the mass concentration of secondary organic carbon (SOC) was estimated, and SOC pollution in BJ was relatively light. Analysis of eight carbonaceous components showed that the gasoline vehicle exhaust sources made high contributions to the levels of carbonaceous aerosols in all three cities. Compared with SJZ, the carbonaceous aerosols in BJ and TJ were more affected by road dust pollution. Analysis of backward trajectory indicated that the carbonaceous aerosols in the three cities were affected by pollution transport from the BTH region and surrounding areas, in addition to local sources. In contrast to the other two cities, OC and EC in SJZ were greatly affected by short-distance air mass transport from Hebei Province.

Variation Characteristics and Source Analysis of Carbonaceous Aerosols in Winter in Jiashan

Organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC), and PM2.5 concentration data obtained from Shanxi Super Station in Jiashan County of Jiaxing City, in the winter of 2018 and 2019, were analyzed to determine the variation and potential source areas of carbonaceous aerosols. The results show that OC concentrations in the winter of 2018 and 2019 were 6.90 μg·m-3 and 5.63 μg·m-3, respectively, while EC concentrations were 2.47 μg·m-3 and 1.57 μg·m-3, respectively. The concentrations of OC and EC in the winter of 2019 were lower than those in the winter of 2018, by approximately 18.4% and 36.4%, respectively. In 2018 and 2019, the concentrations of secondary organic carbon (SOC), calculated using the minimum R-squared (MRS) method, were 1.49 μg·m-3 and 1.97 μg·m-3, respectively, and the concentrations of primary organic carbon (POC) were 5.41 μg·m-3 and 3.66 μg·m-3, respectively. The proportion of POC in OC showed a downward trend, from 96.0% in December 2018 to 64.9% in February 2020, indicating a decrease of 31.1 percentage points. SOC showed an upward trend, increasing by 31.1 percentage points from 4.0% in December 2018 to 35.1% in February 2020. It is worth noting that with the increase in PM2.5 concentration, the concentration of OC and EC increased by 474.7% and 408.2%, respectively, although the proportion of OC in PM2.5 decreased from 18.8% to 12.3%. and the percentage of OC decreased from 5.8% to 3.3%. The contribution of POC to PM2.5 did not fluctuate, and only decreased significantly above 150 μg·m-3, while the contribution of SOC to PM2.5 first decreased and then increased. In Jiaxing, the potential sources of OC and EC were mainly southern Jiangsu, southeastern Anhui, local Jiaxing, and northern Zhejiang. In the winter of the contribution concentrations of OC and EC in the main potential source regions were approximately 2 μg·m-3 and 6 μg·m-3 lower, respectively, than in winter 2018. The range of high values in the potential source regions also decreased in 2019. Before the COVID-19 epidemic, it was affected by both motor vehicle exhaust emissions and coal burning. During the Spring Festival and home isolation, due to traffic control and other reasons, motor vehicle emissions were reduced, which leaving coal burning as the main contributor.

Temporal trends of the concentration and sources of secondary organic aerosols in PM2.5 in Shanghai during 2012 and 2018

Based on the concentrations of the carbonaceous components and the typical organic tracers in 682 p.m.2.5 samples collected in Shanghai from 2012 to 2018, the temporal trends of the concentrations and potential sources of the secondary organic aerosols in PM2.5 in Shanghai were investigated. The annual average concentrations of organic carbon (OC), elemental carbon (EC) and water-soluble organic carbon (WSOC) all showed a decreasing trend along with the PM2.5 concentration. The annual concentration of total carbon (TC) in 2018 (4.3 μg m−3) was about 34% of that in 2012. Compared with that in 2013, the concentrations of isoprene and sesquiterpene SOA tracers in 2018 decreased by 48% and 43%. Meanwhile, the concentration of monoterpene SOA tracers kept stable in 2 ng m−3 to 3 ng m−3, and the concentration of toluene SOA tracer decreased slightly from 1.3 ng m−3 in 2013 to 1.0 ng m−3 in 2018. Correlation analysis with levoglucosan suggested that biomass burning should be an important source of sesquitertene in Shanghai. It was found that the 2-MGA/2-MTLs ratio of the isoprene tracers was more strongly affected by the ambient temperature but not NOx in Shanghai. The concentration of secondary organic carbon (SOC) estimated with OC/EC-based, WSOC-based and tracer-based methods showed a decreasing trend during the study period, but the contribution of SOC to OC was increasing. Anthropogenic aromatic volatile organic compounds was the increasingly important contributor to the SOC in PM2.5, and should be the key pollutants to be controlled to further improve the air quality in Shanghai.

Seasonal Characteristics of Biogenic Secondary Organic Aerosols Over Chichijima Island in the Western North Pacific: Impact of Biomass Burning Activity in East Asia

AbstractTo better understand the formation processes of biogenic secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) over remote oceanic regions, aerosol samples were collected from 2010 to 2012 at Chichijima Island in the western North Pacific (WNP). The samples were analyzed by gas chromatography‐mass spectrometry for SOA tracers, which are produced by the photochemical oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), including isoprene, monoterpenes, and sesquitepenes. Although no seasonal trend was identified for the isoprene‐derived SOA tracers, we observed higher levels of the monoterpene‐derived and sesquiterpene‐derived SOA tracers in winter/spring and lower levels in summer/autumn. We found a significant correlation (r = 0.87) of β‐caryophyllinic acid with levoglucosan, the latter being a specific tracer of biomass burning (BB). This suggests that the β‐caryophyllene accumulated in higher plants is evaporated by BB followed by atmospheric oxidation during long‐range transport from the Asian continent over the WNP. The biogenic secondary organic carbon concentration estimated using a tracer‐based approach ranged from 0.11 to 174 ngC m−3 (avg. 34.8 ± 38.2 ngC m−3), accounting for 0.02%–32.0% (avg. 6.11% ± 6.42%) of the measured organic carbon. Our results indicate that SOAs are formed by the photooxidation of BVOCs. The backward trajectories of air masses further support their transport from the central Pacific during mid‐spring to mid‐autumn, whereas BB aerosols are transported from the Asian continent during mid‐autumn to mid‐spring over the WNP. Positive matrix factorization analyses of the SOA tracers suggest that organic aerosols of Chichijima are mostly related to BVOC emissions, with BB’s additional contributions especially in winter and spring.
