Synthesis of Necessity and Opportunity Motivation Factors in Women Entrepreneurship: A Systematic Literature Review

The dichotomy of the Necessity and Opportunity motivation (Push-Pull model) has been frequently used to explain Women Entrepreneurial Motivation (WEM) unvaryingly in most situations. The literature indicates a need for clarity and precision in the context-specific conceptualization of this construct. Understanding the disparities between WEM in developed and developing nations will further clear the ambiguity. The current article addresses this gap in three stages. Systematically analyzing 103 articles published in WEM research, an exhaustive list of all WEM factors is built and categorized as necessity and opportunity motivation using Computer-Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) assisted Thematic Content Analysis (TCA). Subsequently, necessity and opportunity motivation themes are generated and the related sub-themes and their constituents are identified. Finally, the contextual differences in WEM tendencies are highlighted in the light of women entrepreneurship in developed and developing nations. The main contribution of this review, apart from the comprehensive consolidation of WEM factors, is the revelation of the clear contextual difference in the usage and connotation of certain WEM factors in developed and developing countries. These contextual insights of WEM may provide future research scholars as well as policymakers with an improved understanding of necessity and opportunity motivation factors.

Analysis of Potential Manifestation of Creative Economy for Single Parent (Foster Village-Pudak Sapadu, Kumpeh Ulu District)

This study aims to identify and explain the economic creativity model for Single Parent. The research approach uses the Basic qualitative research approach. The sampling technique used snowball sampling and observation by interviewing 26 key informants who live in the villages of Muara Kumpeh, Pudak, Kasang Pudak, Lopak Alai and Sumber Jaya, namely member villages of PUDAK Sandang Pangan Terpadu (PUDAK SAPADU). The data analysis tool uses ATLAS.ti software (CAQDAS / Computer-Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software program). The results of the study determine that the integrative hybrid model is a single parent creative economic empowerment pattern. The results of the analysis found that the creative pattern of the single parent economy has three models, namely new businesses, single parent businesses and millennial businesses. The research implications of limited capital, ability, and level of education are taken into consideration by single parents in determining business patterns.

Succession Planning in Ghana’s Nascent Technical Universities: The Case of Cape Coast Technical University

This paper investigated on succession planning in Ghana’s Technical Universities with the Cape Coast Technical University as a case. In this study, the researchers interviewed nine purposively sampled senior managerial and administrative personnel. The interview transcripts were content-analysed using the Taguette computer-aided qualitative data analysis software. The study uncovered that the CCTU has neither a succession policy nor a formal arrangement for training and mentoring personnel to fill leadership roles. Personnel interviewed demonstrated a positive perception of succession planning even though it was based on basic knowledge of the concept. Further, interviewees expressed a desire to see succession planning given a try at the CCTU. However, they wanted such a program to be transparent, inclusive, and coherent. They also would like to see any such policy have adequate top-level backing. The challenges to a potential succession planning policy included the risk of it being abused as a tool for cronyism, the risk of people selected and sponsored under the policy leaving the organization and the risk of it only existing on paper without full implementation The authors recommend that the dominant coalition at CCTU should study feasibility of formal succession planning and formulate a unique solution that is based in local context. They also recommend that researchers expand on this study across HEIs in Ghana. Finally, the researchers recommend that it would be insightful to examine the prevalence and nature of succession planning in various Ghanaian organizations. Such research may uncover practices and leadership development philosophies that are rooted in Ghanaian culture and which may be further developed.

Understanding Preservice Teachers’ Reluctance to Use of Online Learning Platforms to Teach Individuals with Intellectual Disability

This study investigated the reluctance among pre-service to adopt online learning platforms to teach students with intellectual disability. This study consisted of pre-service teachers. The qualitative phenomenological research method was used to examine pre-service teachers' reluctance to adopt online learning platforms to teach students with intellectual disabilities. In-depth interviews were conducted with pre-service teachers at the Faculty of Education, University of Ibadan. Seven respondents selected using a convenient sampling technique participated in the study; respondents were referred to as Participant 1 to Participant 7 for the purpose of anonymity. Collected data were transcribed and analysed using ATLAS.ti version 22, a computer-aided qualitative data analysis software. Based on participants' responses, four major themes were generated on the perception: opportunities to access various learning platforms, no special provision for learners with intellectual disability, the possibility of learning biases, and ineffective learning methods. Based on the evidence presented here, individuals with ID will not be able to access online learning platforms to the same degree as others within society.

Handling COVID-19 in the capital city of Jakarta with innovation policy: the scale of social restrictions policy

This study aimed to examine the dominant innovation policy elements of the social restrictions to fight the COVID-19 pandemic in Jakarta. The data was obtained using a Computer-Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software named the NVivo 12 Plus application, accompanied by purposive sampling from four online media sources. These sites, namely Detik.com, Kompas.com, Liputan6.com, and Kumparan.com, were accessed for their provision of information about the COVID-19 social restriction policy in DKI Jakarta. Subsequently, the results showed that the Jakarta government's decision on the Large-Scale Social Restriction-PSBB Stage 1–5 and PPKM Stage consider relative advantage and trialability aspects. Following the proposed policy design, the Jakarta Government expects an easier adoption of the innovation in slowing the spread of the virus. Relative advantage and trialability were revealed to enable developing countries to manage or control the number of pandemic cases and the ensuing economic impact, as well as innovate their policies in practical cases based on the field situation. This study only focused on Jakarta as one of the South East capital cities that successfully dealt with COVID-19. Therefore, future studies should obtain policy designs from other continents that successfully tackled the pandemic in different situations.

Trend Analysis of Mainstreaming Flood Risk Reduction into Spatial Planning in Thailand

Mainstreaming flood risk reduction into spatial planning (MFRRSP) recognizes the urgent need for sustainable human settlement planning. Despite official recognition of MFRRSP in Thailand, repetitive damage from floods demonstrates gaps in concept and implementation. This paper examines the transition and challenges of flood risk reduction (FRR) practices in the spatial planning (SP) of the Bangkok and Sing Buri provinces of Thailand. Content analysis through computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDS) and in-depth interviews provide the evidence for the study. Twenty-two codes under seven assessments were extracted from the MFRRSP guidelines of international organizations. It was found that FRR was more mainstream in Thailand’s SP. The code in the next Sing Buri and Bangkok Comprehensive Land Use Plan (CLUP) was mentioned in 202.06% and 112.70% of the existing CLUP. The assessment area that deserves more attention is FRR preparedness and stakeholder participation, which only 0.011% and 0.035% mention. Two implementation problems are identified. Firstly, no emergency management deals with using land-use management methods. Secondly, FRR regulations limiting the type, density, and design have been reduced, as seen in the next draft of Bangkok CLUP that reduces the floodway in specific districts to be a residential land type. This specific study for Thailand shows how the method can be used in any local context for any country to understand how official planning documents evolve and adapt to disaster preparedness.

The mediation role of the PMO in the transfer of knowledge between projects – a case study of five PMOs

PurposeThis article describes advances in the study of knowledge transfer (KT) in project-based organizations (PBOs). Project management offices (PMOs) have both a moderation role and a mediation role to play in KT between projects. In order to improve KT between projects, this paper explores the mediation role of the PMO in the transfer of knowledge with different levels of articulability. The aim is to improve the usability of transferred knowledge.Design/methodology/approachThe case study method was used to investigate KT in five-divisional PMOs within a multinational engineering and project management PBO. Fifteen semi-structured interviews were conducted and the results were analysed using ATLAS.Ti (a computer-aided qualitative data analysis software).FindingsThe findings show that it is the way in which the PMO structures knowledge management (KM) infrastructure and processes, which determines the success of its mediation role in the transfer of tacit and explicit knowledge between projects. The articulability of knowledge influences the PMO's mediation role and the PMO's mediation role in turn improves the usability of knowledge, thereby creating a conducive environment for a competitive advantage.Originality/valueThis study offers a framework to assist scholars and practitioners to understand the mediation role of the PMO in the transfer of knowledge with different levels of articulability within the projects environment. Such understanding can improve the usability of transferred knowledge, thereby creating a competitive edge for a PBO. The study shows that the PMO can be used as an instrument for KT between projects, a theme that was not found in literature. The paper thus offers new empirical information.

Consumer’s welfare in the retail environment: implication for retail property development planning and policy

In West African commercial cities, research on customers' well-being, social life, safety and retail environment is underrepresented. This study aims at examining how the environment of shopping malls influences feelings of well-being. Subsequently, the policy way-forward towards ensuring the sustainable well-being of consumers is solicited. Using the mall intercept technique, data were gathered on Tuesdays and Saturdays of the week. Subsequently, two categories of interviews (physical and telephone) were conducted. While the quantitative data were analysed using regression analysis, we utilized computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS-Atlas. ti) to analyse qualitative (interview) data. The study discovered that the shopping environment contributed to shopper's well-being. It suggests that shopping activities contribute to shoppers' social, leisure and work-life in the study area. However, there are issues with safety, self-identification, atmosphere and price/promotion from the outcomes. Social, leisure and work-life of shopper associates with retail environment. More concern is raised on safety (security). Planning, branding and rethinking strategies can be of help.

Choosing informal ways to acquire land

PurposeThis paper examines why some sets of people choose an informal way to acquire land. It also examines challenges and drivers within indigenous communities in South-western Nigeria. Policy recommendations were proposed for formalization. What precisely are the contextual reasons that can be established empirically for the prevailing extra-legal practices in the developing land market? What are the challenges, and how can the informal land market be graduated into the formal system?Design/methodology/approachIt begins with identifying the contextual features, drivers and challenges of the informal land market through a combination of literature synthesis and a pilot survey. Subsequently, copies of questionnaires were developed, tested and distributed to the critical actors in the informal land market. Lastly, a structured interview was conducted to elicit possible solutions from key actors (both formal and informal stakeholders). Data were analyzed using descriptive, inferential statistics and computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS, Atlas. ti).FindingsThe absence of administrative bureaucracy was the predominant characteristic of the informal urban land market, while household income is the strongest predictor of the informal land market drivers. Informal documentation of transactions is also one of the most severe challenges in the informal urban land market. Consensus between statutory and customary institutions and other 15 governance-related recommendations is proposed to confirm informality to formality.Originality/valueThe paper's outcome will provide a rational guide to landowners, land administrators and other stakeholders on relevant information needed to develop a viable and healthy urban and rural land market.

Teachers’ Perceptions of the Role of Entrepreneurship Education in the Career Choice Decision-Making of Business Studies Learners in Gauteng South Africa

This study explored teachers’ views on the influence that entrepreneurship education has on Business Studies learners’ career choices in Gauteng, South Africa. A qualitative case study approach was employed with a sample size of five Business Studies teachers from three selected public secondary schools in Gauteng East District, using purposive and convenience sampling methods to select participants for this study. Semi-structured in-depth face-to-face interviews were employed to collect required data for this study. Data were analysed using Atlas.ti which is a Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) program. The findings from this study affirmed that Business Studies influences the career choices of learners to become entrepreneurs. Strengthened by the knowledge, skills and experience acquired from entrepreneurship as a segment in Business Studies, the study recommended that the Department of Basic Education (DBE) should provide the necessary encouragement to Business Studies learners as it is implemented with other subjects by assigning it an elevated status in the curriculum.

Malaysian folktales: An understanding of the motif- index of folk literature applicability in the local folktales’ context

The motif of the folktale is essentially the smallest and striking elements of narrative content with the ability to endure in tradition. It is divided into three categories: actor, item and single incident. These categories become the foundation that supports the built of the original motif-index of folk literature by Stith Thompson. Nevertheless, the index, as an analysis tool, was developed based on an analysis conducted on mostly European folk literature (folktale inclusive). It is a question dawned on the researcher regarding the applicability of the universal motifs and sub-motifs listed in the index on Malaysian folktales considering such local folktales were not involved in the making of the index many moons ago. Therefore, the study seeks to understand the applicability of the original motif-index in the local folktales’ context. The qualitative text analysis method was mainly employed in Atlas.ti, a computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) to propel the study in understanding the scenario stated. Being the heart of the article, it is found that the original motif-index is indeed applicable in the local folktales’ context to a certain extent. Inopportunely, not all the universal motifs from the index exist in the local folktales. The applicability and dispersion of the motif classes’ weight which leans toward the D. Magic class, is heavily influenced by the differences between the local and the European cultures because truly what is folktale if not a fruit of a unique culture.

Experiences and Perceptions of Nuclear Medicine Technologists in the Assessment of Myocardial Perfusion Image Quality.

Nuclear medicine technologists (NMTs) are experts in the acquisition of myocardial perfusion (MP) images, in addition to the many other types of images acquired in nuclear medicine departments. NMTs are expected to ensure that images are of optimal quality in order to facilitate accurate interpretation by nuclear medicine physicians (NMPs). However, ensuring optimal image quality is a shared responsibility between NMTs and NMPs. The shared responsibilities have resulted in inconsistences in the assessment of MP image quality among NMTs in different departments. Little is known about the perceptions and experiences of NMTs on the assessment of MP image quality. Therefore, the focus of this research study was NMTs. The aim of this qualitative study was to explore and describe the perceptions and experiences of NMTs on the assessment of MP image quality. The research question was, "How do NMTs perform the responsibility of ensuring MP image quality?" Methods: The study followed a qualitative explorative approach using focus groups as a means of collecting data. Nineteen NMTs from 4 academic hospitals were purposefully selected to participate. A semistructured questionnaire was used to conduct the focus groups. The collected data were managed using a computer-aided qualitative data analysis software program to formulate codes, categories, and themes. Results: Two overarching themes emerged from the data: the management of MP images, and the resources required to support NMTs. NMTs differed in their management of MP images because of the prevailing circumstances in their respective departments. In addition, the results suggested that NMTs' level of involvement in the assessment of MP image quality was influenced by the availability of resources required for processing and assessing image quality. Conclusion: Despite the shared responsibility in the assessment of MP image quality with NMPs, NMTs considered themselves as playing a major role. However, resources to facilitate the assessment of image quality are considered necessary and should be available to support NMTs in submitting images of optimal quality for interpretation.

Stakeholders’ Influence on Environmental Sustainability in the Australian Hotel Industry

Hotels are a key element of the tourism industry. Hotels are the most common form of accommodation for tourists and the hotel industry is intricately to tourism. A review of the academic literature indicates that existing research is primarily focused on sustainability in tourism, but very few studies have analysed the environmental dimension of sustainability in hotels in Australia, an important facet of the Australian tourism industry. The paper presents the findings of the influence of stakeholders on environmentally sustainable policies and practices (ESPPs) in the Australian hotel industry. One-on-one interviews were conducted with hotel managers as a representative sample of Australian hotels in Melbourne, Australia. The selected sample for the research comprised managers who manage approximately 60 hotels. The data was collected through in-depth interviews. It was then transcribed, coded, and analysed with NVIVO, a computer-aided qualitative data analysis software program. The sample size ensured representation by different segments of the hotel industry to include international chain-affiliated hotels, Australian chain-affiliated hotels and independent hotels. An analysis of the findings suggests that owners and shareholders are the biggest influencers as their investment takes primary importance. Other key stakeholders such as guests generally play a secondary role in influencing the ESPPs of hotels. ESPPs should lead to well-intentioned initiatives and practices that are undertaken by stakeholders to create drivers for change to contribute to environmental sustainability.

The Implications of Audio/Video Conference Systems on the Administration of Justice at the Malaysian Courts

The audio/video conference systems (AVS) enable parties from distinct locations to „meet‟ synchronously in achieving certain objectives. Medical practitioners, accounting firms, businessmen, to name a few, have long resorted to AVS in their everyday routines. Recently, the courts in many parts of the world, including the Malaysian courts, have started to engage in AVS in solving any disputes. Despite this development, local literature is still scarce on this subject matter, and the adoption of AVS is rather recent in the Malaysian context. Hence, this paper seeks to highlight the implications of such technologies, particularly in enhancing the administration of justice at the Malaysian Courts. The study adopts a qualitative method, engaging in two multiple-embedded case studies involving a High Court in West Malaysia and a High Court in East Malaysia using the instrument of semi-structured interviews. The data generated from the case studies were analysed using the computer-aided qualitative data analysis software ATLAS.ti version 8.4. The study found that there is a huge potential for the Malaysian courts to adopt AVS in solving any disputes, as it would significantly save time, money and resources. Most importantly, AVS is proven to improve people‟s access to justice, particularly those in the rural areas. On the other hand, the engagement of the AVS system also posed some challenges such as enhancement of cost and training requirements for the court personnel as well as for the solicitors. Additionally, there seems to be an inadequate regulatory framework to govern the use of AVS at the Malaysian courts. The significance of this study is that it would assist the courts and the Malaysian Bar in appreciating the implications of the AVS on the administration of justice at the Malaysian Courts. Hence, proper guidelines should be in place for users of AVS for proper usage at the courts. Also, this paper would contribute to the body of local literature on ICT adoption at the courts, in particular on the AVS usage.

The Role of Sensitivity Training for Managing Diversities in Sustainable Smart Societies

Entrepreneurial attempts play a key role to make behaviors in a global connected context. In this attempt, it is crucial to manage diversities and extend the capacity of the understanding and knowledge on the sensitivity for making sustainable and smart societies. This research aims to evaluate the perceptions of members of Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) on sensitivity training and sheds a light on description, content and benefits on sensitivity and its’ training in order to create mutual understanding from life experiences on different types of NGOs. As qualitative research was employed in this research, interview and word association methods were used as data collection methods. As the study group, 35 members of various NGOs participated the research and their reflections on sensitivity training as a managerial and organizational perspective were analyzed using interview and word association methods coding through content analysis. In this respect, for data analysis, computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (RQDA) was conducted that R package was used. This research revealed firstly that the most frequently mentioned words for sensitivity definition were empathy which is related with interpersonal relationships and emotional intelligence (EQ); self-knowledge which is related with awareness and conscious; and the viewpoints of oneself like perception and bias. Secondly, to examine the suggestions of the different NGO participants suggesting the managers for raising awareness on sensitivity among their employers in a workplace, themes were identified as managers' own personal approach that is being their own example, trainings and the approach of the human resources department. Thirdly, the benefits of an education for sensitivity skill to sustainable smart societies for global citizenship and its contribution to the development of the sustainable smart societies are overlooked. The main themes were collected under the headings of communication, productivity and respected organization. In the light of the findings it can be stated that with sensitivity training in the workplace, social relations and group atmosphere improve and at the referred point, when benefits of sensitivity training is overlooked,very useful results are reached for individuals, groups and organizations that are directly related for sustainable and smart societies. The sensitivity training is an activity to determine the tasks to be carried out in order to achieve certain goals, to determine the personnel to perform this function, to determine the competencies and responsibilities and organizational relations of global citizens in smart societies. Building Transparency and Trustworthiness in Inductive Research Through Computer-Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software

Many scholars have called for qualitative research to demonstrate transparency and trustworthiness in the data analysis process. Yet these processes, particularly within inductive research, often remain shrouded in mystery. We suggest that computer-aided/assisted qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) can support qualitative researchers in their efforts to present their analysis and findings in a transparent way, thus enhancing trustworthiness. To this end, we propose, describe, and illustrate working examples of six CAQDAS building blocks, three combined CAQDAS techniques, and two coder consistency checks. We argue that these techniques give researchers the language to write about their methods and findings in a transparent manner and that their appropriate use enhances a research project’s trustworthiness. Specific CAQDAS techniques are rarely discussed across an array of inductive research processes. Thus, we see this article as the beginning of a conversation about the utility of CAQDAS to support inductive qualitative research.

Tackling social media data analysis

PurposeThis paper aims to offer insights into the ways two computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS) applications (QSR NVivo and Leximancer) can be used to analyze big, text-based, online data taken from consumer-to-consumer (C2C) social media communication.Design/methodology/approachThis study used QSR NVivo and Leximancer, to explore 200 discussion threads containing 1,796 posts from forums on an online open community and an online brand community that involved online brand advocacy (OBA). The functionality, in particular, the strengths and weaknesses of both programs are discussed. Examples of the types of analyses each program can undertake and the visual output available are also presented.FindingsThis research found that, while both programs had strengths and weaknesses when working with big, text-based, online data, they complemented each other. Each contributed a different visual and evidence-based perspective; providing a more comprehensive and insightful view of the characteristics unique to OBA.Research limitations/implicationsQualitative market researchers are offered insights into the advantages and disadvantages of using two different software packages for research projects involving big social media data. The “visual-first” analysis, obtained from both programs can help researchers make sense of such data, particularly in exploratory research.Practical implicationsThe paper provides practical recommendations for analysts considering which programs to use when exploring big, text-based, online data.Originality/valueThis paper answered a call to action for further research and demonstration of analytical programs of big, online data from social media C2C communication and makes strong suggestions about the need to examine such data in a number of ways.

The Impact of Trust and Reciprocity on Knowledge Exchange: A Case Study in IT Outsourcing

The aim of this study is to analyse the mechanisms of trust and reciprocity that impact knowledge exchange in IT outsourcing projects. This study develops a framework that shows the impact of the trust and reciprocity components on knowledge sharing and IT outsourcing projects. IT outsourcing represents the way in which a company can accelerate the achievement of its goals by handing over all or some of its IT services to vendors. This study adopts a social exchange theory perspective. The conceptual model has been developed based on Wong and Cheung’s (2005) trust categories (Partners’ Performance, Partners’ Permeability, Relational Bonding, System-based Trust) and Cohen & Bradford’s (1989) exchange currencies model (Task-related Currencies, Position-related Currencies, Relationship-related Currencies, Personal-related Currencies). In this study, the researcher applied a single-case study qualitative approach combined with a core action research methodology covering three action research cycles. The researcher collected the data using two types of interviews: semi-structured and focus group interviews. The total number of conducted interviews was 45, covering managers, team leaders, and IT technical staff. Computer Aided Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS) was used to analyse the collected qualitative data. The study was a good chance for the researcher and participants to apply action research methodology for the first time in the organisation. An action research co-generative knowledge creation module was applied to provide a workable solution for the identified study question. Four factors were found to make a significant contribution to reciprocity: a well-designed contract, client capability, operational readiness, and the client-vendor relationship. Four elements were found to have a significant impact on building mutual trust between the client and the vendor: a well-designed contract, vendor capability, transparency, and communication. The study found that two factors can assist in increasing the level of trust and the vendor’s strengths during the IT outsourcing process. Those two assisting factors are external consultant support (in the contract negotiation phase) and top management support (in the contract implementation phase). The main contribution of the study is the conclusion that both reciprocity and trust must be combined to have effective knowledge transfer. Trust and reciprocity are not one single factor, however; each is a category with associated subcategories. Outsourcing contracts and vendors’ good intentions are not in themselves enough to achieve the outsourcing targets. The salient outcomes of the study are the realisation of the importance of having skilled resources on the client’s side, and that these resources must not be used only to monitor the vendor; rather, the client must have a plan to engage and integrate those resources with the vendor’s activities. The study also advises the client’s management to consider the contract as a means to IT outsourcing success and not an end in itself. A continuous effort is needed during the project to achieve the company’s targets and to overcome any gaps in the signed contract.

Utilising an Ubuntu-Centred Communication Management Framework to Analyse CSR Messages on SNSS

ABSTRACTThis article is the result of qualitative research conducted on the corporate social responsibility (CSR) communication disseminated by two financial institutions, FNB and Capitec, on their social networking sites (SNSs). The research employed a phenomenological research paradigm to explore the interactions between the financial institutions and their stakeholders on Facebook and Twitter. Collected data were analysed by means of interpretative discourse analysis as well as two computer-aided qualitative data analysis software programmes, Leximancer and Centim. The authors categorised the financial institutions’ CSR communication in themes and coded it according to a newly formulated theoretical framework of Ubuntu-centred communication practices on SNSs. It was found that FNB's CSR communication was based on Ubuntu values whereas Capitec's CSR communication did not exhibit key characteristics, such as the inclusion of narratives and archetypes, sound conflict resolution strategies, and the presentation of mutually beneficial solutions to societal issues. Based on the findings, it is proposed that organisation-stakeholder interactions can be facilitated when organisations disseminate CSR messages and constructively engage with stakeholders on SNSs. Moreover, culturally-specific communication management strategies, such as Ubuntu-centred communication, should be infused in holistic communication models to foster participatory online communities which are characterised by dialogue, mutual trust and reciprocity.

Integrating Qualitative Data Analysis Software into Doctoral Public Administration Education

The quality of doctoral research has long been debated in the field of public administration, along with discussions about the need for improved methodological preparation. What is lacking, however, are discussions in public administration pedagogy about conceptual understandings regarding the use of computer-aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS), pedagogical strategies, and student and faculty perspectives and experiences about the use of such software programs. This article attempts to fill this gap by focusing on ways in which CAQDAS can be integrated into doctoral public administration education, the possibilities and limitations of such software, and strategies that faculty and students can use in teaching and employing such software. We also draw on lessons learned from a collaborative research project that used a qualitative data analysis software program.
