Low-iodine-dose computed tomography coupled with an artificial intelligence-based contrast-boosting technique in children: a retrospective study on comparison with conventional-iodine-dose computed tomography.

Low-iodine-dose computed tomography (CT) protocols have emerged to mitigate the risks associated with contrast injection, often resulting in decreased image quality. To evaluate the image quality of low-iodine-dose CT combined with an artificial intelligence (AI)-based contrast-boosting technique in abdominal CT, compared to a standard-iodine-dose protocol in children. This single-center retrospective study included 35 pediatric patients (mean age 9.2years, range 1-17years) who underwent sequential abdominal CT scans-one with a standard-iodine-dose protocol (standard-dose group, Iobitridol 350 mgI/mL) and another with a low-iodine-dose protocol (low-dose group, Iohexol 240 mgI/mL)-within a 4-month interval from January 2022 to July 2022. The low-iodine CT protocol was reconstructed using an AI-based contrast-boosting technique (contrast-boosted group). Quantitative and qualitative parameters were measured in the three groups. For qualitative parameters, interobserver agreement was assessed using the intraclass correlation coefficient, and mean values were employed for subsequent analyses. For quantitative analysis of the three groups, repeated measures one-way analysis of variance with post hoc pairwise analysis was used. For qualitative analysis, theFriedman test followed by post hoc pairwise analysis was used. Paired t-tests were employed to compare radiation dose and iodine uptake between the standard- and low-dose groups. The standard-dose group exhibited higher attenuation, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of organs and vessels compared to the low-dose group (all P-values < 0.05 except for liver SNR, P = 0.12). However, noise levels did not differ between the standard- and low-dose groups (P = 0.86). The contrast-boosted group had increased attenuation, CNR, and SNR of organs and vessels, and reduced noise compared with the low-dose group (all P < 0.05). The contrast-boosted group showed no differences in attenuation, CNR, and SNR of organs and vessels (all P > 0.05), and lower noise (P = 0.002), than the standard-dose group. In qualitative analysis, the contrast-boosted group did not differ regarding vessel enhancement and lesion conspicuity (P > 0.05) but had lower noise (P < 0.05) and higher organ enhancement and artifacts (all P < 0.05) than the standard-dose group. While iodine uptake was significantly reduced in low-iodine-dose CT (P < 0.001), there was no difference in radiation dose between standard- and low-iodine-dose CT (all P > 0.05). Low-iodine-dose abdominal CT, combined with an AI-based contrast-boosting technique exhibited comparable organ and vessel enhancement, as well as lesion conspicuity compared to standard-iodine-dose CT in children. Moreover, image noise decreased in the contrast-boosted group, albeit with an increase in artifacts.

Mechanical behavior and microstructure evolution of slag-fly ash based geopolymer stabilized sand

Geopolymers made from ground granulated blast-furnace slag and fly ash could effectively address the issues of high energy consumption and emissions associated with Portland cement, which is commonly used as a soil curing agent. In this study, the unconfined compressive strength and microstructure of geopolymer-solidified sand were presented and analyzed. The study focused on effect of the type and ratio of activator, the ratio of slag to fly ash, and the ratio of water to (activator and cementitious materials) (W/(A + C)) on the behavior of geopolymer stabilized sand. The results of computed tomography (CT), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicate that the variation in initial water content significantly affects the porosity of the specimen, which increased as initial water content increased. The cracks were mainly found at the joints between the individual aggregates and at the edges of the individual aggregates. The pore size distribution of the specimens was concentrated in the range 0.0761–5 μm, while the polymer particle distribution was concentrated in the range 0.0761–10 μm, with a concentration of over 90 %. A significant amount of cementing material was densely distributed around both the aggregates and the pores. CT and SEM testing techniques enable a thorough analysis and mutual verification of the self-compacting process, pore distribution, and size, as well as the distribution of cementing material within the specimens. The optimum ratio for B-S19 has been determined.

Micro-CT image-based computation of effective thermal and mechanical properties of fibrous porous materials

Fibrous porous materials are extensively employed as heat shielding material for space vehicles and capsules. To predict the performance of these materials using computational modeling at the vehicle/capsule scale, the effective material properties are needed. In this work, the effective thermal conductivity and elastic constants of a carbon fibrous porous material called FiberForm (precursor of PICA) were calculated using a direct image-based approach. In this image-based approach, the microstructures obtained using X-ray computed tomography technique are represented as binary voxel data. Nonlocal interactions are introduced between neighboring voxels. Integro-differential equations, with respect to spatial and temporal dimensions respectively, are developed to govern material thermal and mechanical behaviors. Using this approach, energy-based computational procedures were developed to calculate the effective material properties of fibrous and porous materials irrespective of the periodicity of underlying microstructures. The size of representative volume element was determined by convergence of effective properties with respect to microstructure size.

Precision Identification of Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer in Denoised CT Scans Using EfficientNet and Voting System Algorithms.

Local advanced rectal cancer (LARC) poses significant treatment challenges due to its location and high recurrence rates. Accurate early detection is vital for treatment planning. With magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) being resource-intensive, this study explores using artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret computed tomography (CT) scans as an alternative, providing a quicker, more accessible diagnostic tool for LARC. In this retrospective study, CT images of 1070 T3-4 rectal cancer patients from 2010 to 2022 were analyzed. AI models, trained on 739 cases, were validated using two test sets of 134 and 197 cases. By utilizing techniques such as nonlocal mean filtering, dynamic histogram equalization, and the EfficientNetB0 algorithm, we identified images featuring characteristics of a positive circumferential resection margin (CRM) for the diagnosis of locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). Importantly, this study employs an innovative approach by using both hard and soft voting systems in the second stage to ascertain the LARC status of cases, thus emphasizing the novelty of the soft voting system for improved case identification accuracy. The local recurrence rates and overall survival of the cases predicted by our model were assessed to underscore its clinical value. The AI model exhibited high accuracy in identifying CRM-positive images, achieving an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.89 in the first test set and 0.86 in the second. In a patient-based analysis, the model reached AUCs of 0.84 and 0.79 using a hard voting system. Employing a soft voting system, the model attained AUCs of 0.93 and 0.88, respectively. Notably, AI-identified LARC cases exhibited a significantly higher five-year local recurrence rate and displayed a trend towards increased mortality across various thresholds. Furthermore, the model's capability to predict adverse clinical outcomes was superior to those of traditional assessments. AI can precisely identify CRM-positive LARC cases from CT images, signaling an increased local recurrence and mortality rate. Our study presents a swifter and more reliable method for detecting LARC compared to traditional CT or MRI techniques.

A 3D Evaluation of Condyle Position of Skeletal Class I and III Patients: A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography Technique

Purpose: The present study aims to assess the differences in the condyle position for two skeletal classes using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) reconstructions for both sides and genders.&#x0D; Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, the CBCT images of 96 patients (20-60 years) were assessed. The participants were divided according to their Angle malocclusion classifications (Angle Classes I and III). The variables of the Anterior-Posterior position of the Condyle (APC), condylar angle in the axial plane (ACA), the Lateral Position of the Condyle in the axial plane (LPC), the Vertical Position of the Condyle (VPC), condylar angle in coronal dimension (CCA), and the difference of APC and VPC on both sides were measured. The measurements were analyzed using a one‑way ANOVA and Tukey’s post hoc test.&#x0D; Results: The variables of APC, LPC, ACA, VDC, and the difference of the APC on both sides in the two skeletal classes were similar. The VPC and CCA were greater in Class III than in Class I. All variables representing the 3D position of the condyle were similar in men and women, as well as on the right and left in both skeletal classes, I and III.&#x0D; Conclusion: Based on the 3D evaluation results of the condylar position, the skeletal classes III and I differed in the VPC and CCA; however, for the rest variables, there were no statistical differences.

Analysis of the Internal Structure of Brenna Sandstone Samples with Respect to the Differences in Measured Quasi-elastic Moduli

AbstractThe Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio determined for the rocks under uniaxial or triaxial loading conditions represent necessary input parameters for solving many geotechnical tasks. However, these effective stiffness moduli, particularly the Poisson’s ratios, measured on different samples sometimes substantially differ, even for visually compact and macroscopically homogeneous rock. This has been observed for Brenna sandstone, especially under conditions of conventional triaxial extensions. The aim of this study was, thus, to reveal differences in rock structure that could cause such behavior. Several complementary methods were used to investigate the structure of this sandstone: X-ray computed tomography (CT), visual analysis using optical scanning and stereo-microscopy, and a new method combining water jet erosion with these visualization techniques. Analyses of this structure revealed mechanically more resistant compact thick and adjacent thin weak layers. In rock samples, these layers have different patterns and orientations. To demonstrate the influence of layer orientation on effective stiffness moduli measured under different loading conditions, FEM calculations were performed for idealized structural models. The outcomes of this numerical analysis are in qualitative agreement with the results of the loading experiments and the layered structure revealed in the samples. The ability of the proposed method using water erosion to analyze the rock structure in detail was verified. The method offers an interesting alternative to standard visual and X-ray CT techniques. The numerical calculations indicate the importance of latent layered defects in sedimentary rocks for fine measurements of stiffness moduli (especially the Poisson’s ratios) used as inputs for geotechnical applications.

Computed tomography scanning revealed macropore-controlled N2O emissions under long-term tillage and cover cropping practices

Microscale alterations in soil physical characteristics resulting from long-term soil health practices can contribute to changes in soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. In this study, we investigated soil N2O emissions in relation to pore characteristics influencing soil gas diffusivity under long-term tillage and cover cropping practices. Intact soil cores from tillage (conventional tillage, Conv. T versus no tillage, NT) and cover crop (hairy vetch, HV versus no cover crop, NC) treatments were used for N2O measurements and computed tomography (CT) scanning. Using X-ray CT technique with a resolution of 59 μm, pore structure parameters including macroporosity, number of macropores, anisotropy, fractal dimension, tortuosity, and connectivity were determined. The results showed that Conv. T and HV emitted significantly higher N2O than NT and NC, respectively. A similar trend was observed for macroporosity, Conv. T soils had 27.4 % higher CT-derived macroporosity than the NT soils and HV increased macroporosity by 31.1 % over the NC treatment. The number of macropores and fractal dimension were significantly higher whereas degree of anisotropy was significantly lower under HV compared to NC. In the upper 3 cm of soil, HV had a connected porosity, whereas the pores were disconnected and isolated in NC. These CT-derived properties; however, were not impacted by tillage treatments. N2O emissions were positively and significantly correlated to relative soil gas diffusivity, CT-derived macroporosity, number of macropores, and fractal dimension. Our results demonstrated that soil macroporosity and relative gas diffusivity could lead to improved understanding and predictability of N2O emissions under high soil moisture conditions.

Microscopic investigation of the optical and morphological properties of iPP/TiO2 nanocomposite fibres using computed tomography technique.

In this article, the optical and structural properties of iPP/TiO2 nanocomposite fibres, considering three distinct extrusion speeds (25, 50 and 78 m/min) in addition to blank isotactic polypropylene samples were determined. Employing computed tomographic scans, localised optical defects in the nanocomposite fibres are unveiled, while refractive indices are examined by analysing transmitted intensity with incident light vibrating parallel and perpendicular to the fibre axis. The internal structure is further characterised through birefringence and density calculations. Mechanical properties, specifically stiffness, are probed by measuring elastic modulus values along the fibre. The investigation extends to the presence of TiO2 nanoparticles in the isotactic polypropylene matrix, inspecting their influence on the uniform morphology along and across the fibre. While the addition of TiO2 nanoparticles has many advantages, including enhanced properties, the study shows adverse effects on the morphological integrity of the fibres, particularly at higher extrusion rates. Micrographs are included to visually illustrate these findings, providing a comprehensive understanding of the complex interaction between extrusion rates, TiO2 nanoparticle incorporation, and the resulting optical and structural properties in iPP fibres.

Cranial measurements obtained by three-dimensional computed tomography technique in the estimation of sex of contemporary Black South Africans

Human identification forms an integral part of forensic and biological anthropology. For proper identification, a biological profile made up of biodata such as age, sex, ancestry, antemortem stature, and factors of individualization, is obtained and stored for use by anthropologists. A correct sex estimation can help unravel other anthropological parameters. South Africa has a multi-dimensionally high crime rate and its largest distinct population group (Black South Africans) is most affected by such crimes. Several authors have in the past used cranial measurements to carry out sex discrimination among South Africans, such attempts have largely been done using direct assessment of post-mortem specimens and on subjects of European Descent. This study, therefore, attempted to overcome these drawbacks by using a non-invasive method, the three-dimensional computed tomography (3DCT) to obtain population-specific data from a contemporary Black South African population group. It obtained measurements from cranial CT records of 350 Black South Africans (50 % sex ratio) housed in the Radiology Department of Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. The Xiris and IntelliSpace software were used to reconstruct the images into three-dimensional forms from which measurements were taken. Evaluation of previously derived equations using data from the current study yielded low average classification accuracies which necessitated the formulation of new equations. Discriminant function analysis yielded acceptably high average classification accuracies for sex estimation which ranged from 78.3 % to 82.9 %.

A model for estimating peak skin dose in CT.

In interventional radiology patient care can be improved by accurately assessing peak skin dose (PSD) from procedures, as it is the main predictor for tissue-reactions such as erythema. Historically, high skin dose procedures performed in radiology departments were almost exclusively planar fluoroscopy. However, with the increase in use of technologies involving repeated or adjacent computed tomography (CT) such as CT fluoroscopy and multi-modality rooms, the peak skin dose delivered by CT needs to be considered. In this paper, a model to estimate the PSD delivered to a patient undergoing CT has been developed to assist in determining the overall PSD. This model relates the PSD to the device-reported CT Dose Index (CTDIvol) by accounting for a variety of CT technique and patient factors. It includes a novel method for estimating dose contributions as a function of patient or phantom size, scanner geometry, and physical measurement of lateral and depth-based beam profiles. Physical measurements of PSD using radiochromic film on several phantoms have been used to determine needed model parameters. The resulting fitted model was found to agree with measured data to a standard deviation of 5.1% for the data used to fit the model, and 6.8% for measurements that were not used for fitting the model. Two methods for adapting the model for specific scanners are provided, one based on local PSD measurements with radiochromic film and another using CTDIvol measurements. The model, when suitably adapted, can accurately assess individual patients' CT PSD. This information can be integrated with radiation exposure data from other modalities, such as planar fluoroscopy, to predict the overall risk of tissue reactions, allowing for more tailored patient care.

Systematic Review on Learning-based Spectral CT.

Spectral computed tomography (CT) has recently emerged as an advanced version of medical CT and significantly improves conventional (single-energy) CT. Spectral CT has two main forms: dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) and photon-counting computed tomography (PCCT), which offer image improvement, material decomposition, and feature quantification relative to conventional CT. However, the inherent challenges of spectral CT, evidenced by data and image artifacts, remain a bottleneck for clinical applications. To address these problems, machine learning techniques have been widely applied to spectral CT. In this review, we present the state-of-the-art data-driven techniques for spectral CT.

Sine Spin flat detector CT can improve cerebral soft tissue imaging: a retrospective in vivo study

BackgroundFlat detector computed tomography (FDCT) is frequently applied for periinterventional brain imaging within the angiography suite. Novel technical developments such as the Sine Spin FDCT (S-FDCT) may provide an improved cerebral soft tissue contrast. This study investigates the effect of S-FDCT on the differentiation between gray and white matter compared to conventional FDCT (C-FDCT) and multidetector computed tomography (MDCT).MethodsA retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained patient database was performed, including patients who underwent mechanical thrombectomy in our institution and received S-FDCT or C-FDCT as well as MDCT. Differentiation between gray and white matter on the contralateral hemisphere to the ischemic stroke was analyzed quantitatively by contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) and qualitatively (5-point ordinal scale).ResultsIn a cohort of 109 patients, MDCT demonstrated the best differentiation between gray and white matter compared to both FDCT techniques (p ≤ 0.001). Comparing both generations of FDCT, S-FDCT provided better visibility of the basal ganglia (p = 0.045) and the supratentorial cortex (p = 0.044) compared to C-FDCT both in quantitative and qualitative analyses. Median CNR were as follows: S-FDCT 2.41 (interquartile range [IQR] 1.66–3.21), C-FDCT 0.96 (0.46–1.70), MDCT 3.43 (2.83–4.17). For basal ganglia, median score and IQR were as follows: S-FDCT 2.00 (2.00–3.00), C-FDCT 1.50 (1.00–2.00), MDCT 5.00 (4.00–5.00).ConclusionsThe novel S-FDCT improves the periinterventional imaging quality of cerebral soft tissue compared to C-FDCT. Thus, it may improve the diagnosis of complications within the angiography suite. Lung Imaging and Artificial Intelligence in ARDS.

Artificial intelligence (AI) can make intelligent decisions in a manner akin to that of the human mind. AI has the potential to improve clinical workflow, diagnosis, and prognosis, especially in radiology. Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a very diverse illness that is characterized by interstitial opacities, mostly in the dependent areas, decreased lung aeration with alveolar collapse, and inflammatory lung edema resulting in elevated lung weight. As a result, lung imaging is a crucial tool for evaluating the mechanical and morphological traits of ARDS patients. Compared to traditional chest radiography, sensitivity and specificity of lung computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound are higher. The state of the art in the application of AI is summarized in this narrative review which focuses on CT and ultrasound techniques in patients with ARDS. A total of eighteen items were retrieved. The primary goals of using AI for lung imaging were to evaluate the risk of developing ARDS, the measurement of alveolar recruitment, potential alternative diagnoses, and outcome. While the physician must still be present to guarantee a high standard of examination, AI could help the clinical team provide the best care possible.

Impact of Reinforced Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Scratch on Fuel Cell Durability Using 4D X-Ray Computed Tomography Technique

PEMFCs, or Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells, can be used in both stationary power and transportation applications and are promising for use in heavy duty electric vehicles due to their high energy density, ability to be refueled quickly, and extended range, which are key challenges for battery-powered vehicles [1]. Despite these advantages, there are still obstacles preventing the widespread commercialization of PEMFCs, one of which is production cost [2]. To reduce manufacturing costs, it is imperative to ensure that quality control rejects and scraps are minimized. Moreover, enhancing component integration defect detection would ensure the durability of the fuel cell and enhance its operational lifetime. However, robust quality control requires a thorough understanding of potential non-uniformities and their effects on fuel cell performance and operational degradation.Non-uniformities of the membrane electrolyte assembly (MEA) can result in durability issues by damaging the membrane and making it more vulnerable to mechanical and chemical stress during the operation [3]. Several studies have been done on cation contamination and membrane pinholes and their effect on fuel cell performance and durability [4,5] but little attention has been paid to other types of non-uniformities such as membrane scratches and foreign particles, which may also conceivably affect durability [6]. By implementing 4D in-situ X-ray computed tomography (XCT) [7,8], the current work aims to track the evolution of scratches that appear on a reinforced membrane surface during fabrication and its specific objective is to determine the impacts of membrane scratches on membrane durability in fuel cells.The study was conducted by using small-scale fuel cells with GORE-SELECT® membranes that were intentionally scratched with a razor blade, subjecting them to combined chemomechanical membrane accelerated stress test (AST), and monitoring the membrane degradation and evolution of the scratches using 4D-XCT throughout the AST. During the fabrication step, the depth of scratches was regulated by a weak bond between the reinforcement layer and the perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) layer, i.e., the scratches did not tear through the reinforcement. Furthermore, the scratches did not adversely impact the initial cell performance. However, during AST operation the evolution of the scratched region was affected by several factors, including the friction between the layers of the membrane electrode assembly, the width of the scratch (Figure 1), the presence of membrane debris, and the extent of membrane strain. Additionally, it was observed that changes in the quality of catalyst layer transfer onto the scratched region can alter the degradation pattern and potentially create a self-mitigating mechanism. These findings may be used to develop more optimized quality control measures for membrane scratches in fuel cell production. Microstructural changes in Oxisols under long-term different management systems

ABSTRACT There has long been a discussion about the effects of soil management on its structure. Since changes can occur due to management and time of use, more accurate assessments can be achieved if carried out in long-term experiments. This study investigated the long-term effects of soil management on the physical quality of a Cerrado Oxisol (Latossolo Vermelho), focusing on microstructural changes. Micromorphology and computed tomography techniques were used to assess the soil's microstructure. The study compared areas under long-term and different soil management practices, including disc plowing, no-tillage, and disc harrow+subsoiler. A native Cerrado area was considered as the reference. Micromorphology revealed some changes in the pedological features of soil aggregates, but the granular structure showed good resistance even after two decades of use and management. It also indicated a decrease in larger pores and an increase in the surface soil layer micropores for the disc plowing and no-tillage treatments. These results were consistent with traditional laboratory evaluations of soil porosity. Computed tomography was limited due to increased soil bulk density in the cultivated treatments, but it showed potential for assessing soil porosity and pore connectivity. We concluded that micromorphology effectively identifies microstructural changes in Oxisols with small and strong granular structures, and the granular soil aggregates displayed resilience even after long-term management. The micromorphometric evaluation corroborates with traditional methods and suggests loss of pores associated with the disc harrow+subsoiler treatment.

Role of Posterior Acoustic Shadow Width in Ultrasound in Determining Stone Size in Urolithiasis.

Introduction Ultrasound (US) is frequently the initial diagnostic tool for urolithiasis, though computed tomography (CT) remains the imaging modality of choice. However, due to potential overestimations, the accuracy of US in gauging stone size has been a point of contention. This study aims to compare the accuracy of stone size measurements in US, specifically evaluating the utility of the posterior acoustic shadow (PAS) width, against the CT measurements. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study where 120 adult patients (aged >18 years) with confirmed urolithiasis through CT participated. Stone sizes were assessed via both CT and US, with the PAS width also being measured in the latter. Statistical analysis compared stone size discrepancies between both CT and US measurement techniques. Results The study enrolled 73 males and 47 females with various stone locations. The average stone sizes were 15.93 ± 4.59 mm (CT), 18.60 ± 4.80 mm (US), and 16.69 ± 4.61 mm (PAS width). There was a mean difference of 2.67 mm (p< 0.0001) between CT and US sizes, whereas the difference between the PAS width and CT sizes was only 0.75 mm (p= 0.203). Stone size miscalculation by US was 16.77%, whereas it was only 4.77% for PAS width. Conclusion US tends to significantly overestimate stone size when compared to CT. Conversely, the measurement of the PAS width in US presents a more aligned estimation to CT outputs. Integrating PAS width into routine US reporting can enhance the accuracy of stone size estimation, optimizing urolithiasis management and patient counseling.

Computed Tomography-Based Coronary Artery Calcium Score Calculation at a Reduced Tube Voltage Utilizing Iterative Reconstruction and Threshold Modification Techniques: A Feasibility Study.

The coronary artery calcium score (CACS) indicates cardiovascular health. A concern in this regard is the ionizing radiation from computed tomography (CT). Recent studies have tried to introduce low-dose CT techniques to assess CACS. We aimed to investigate the accuracy of iterative reconstruction (IR) and threshold modification while applying low tube voltage in coronary artery calcium imaging. The study population consisted of 107 patients. Each subject underwent an electrocardiogram-gated CT twice, once with a standard voltage of 120 kVp and then a reduced voltage of 80 kVp. The standard filtered back projection (FBP) reconstruction was applied in both voltages. Considering Hounsfield unit (HU) thresholds other than 130 (150, 170, and 190), CACS was calculated using the FBP-reconstructed 80 kVp images. Moreover, the 80 kVp images were reconstructed utilizing IR at different strength levels. CACS was measured in each set of images. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) was used to compare the CACSs. A 64% reduction in the effective dose was observed in the 80 kVp protocol compared to the 120 kVp protocol. Excellent agreement existed between CACS at high-level (strength level = 5) IR in low-kVp images and the standard CACS protocol in scores ≥ 11 (ICC > 0.9 and p < 0.05). Increasing the threshold density to 190 HU in FBP-reconstructed low-kVp images yielded excellent agreement with the standard protocol in scores ≥ 11 (ICC > 0.9 and p < 0.05) and good agreement in score zero (ICC = 0.84 and p = 0.02). The modification of the density threshold and IR provides an accurate calculation of CACS in low-voltage CT with the potential to decrease patient radiation exposure.

In-situ measurement of dynamic micro X-ray CT and dynamic mechanical analysis for rubber materials

Observing the internal state that takes place during deformation is essential for comprehending the mechanical properties of polymeric materials like rubber. For the effective utilization of rubber in damping applications, it is imperative to comprehend the relationship between the loss factor and microstructure. In an earlier study, we developed a dynamic X-ray CT technique tailored for damping materials subjected to tensile amplitude and proposed a method to directly evaluate the internal deformation behavior under dynamic conditions. However, owing to the technical constraints of the shaker employed for dynamic X-ray computed tomography, key variables such as vibration frequency and amplitude could not be incorporated into the analysis. Additionally, it has not been possible to simultaneously measure dynamic viscoelasticity and dynamic micro X-ray CT in situ.In this study, we developed an experimental system that enables simultaneous measurement of dynamic mechanical properties and dynamic X-ray computed tomography (CT). This system facilitates in-situ investigation of internal deformation behavior and the loss factor in rubber materials, allowing for the assessment of variations in loss factors at the micro-scale. We examined the differences between styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) and natural rubber (NR) as base materials and investigated the influence of shape, and particle size of ZnO on the dynamic behavior of SBR composites. Dynamic X-ray computed tomography (CT) was conducted at excitation frequencies of 1 and 2 Hz, excitation amplitudes corresponding to 1% and 1.25% of the inter-chuck distance of the specimens, and a spatial resolution of 0.5 µm. Local strains were extracted from the 3D reconstructed images, and both the local strain amplitudes and their histograms were assessed as characteristics of dynamic behavior. The results indicated that the effect of varying the excitation frequency between 1 and 2 Hz was minimal for the SBR. Additionally, the median value of local strain amplitudes shifted in relation to the magnitude of the excitation amplitude. When comparing base materials (SBR and NR) with significantly different loss factors, no discernible differences were observed in the histograms of local strain amplitudes. The histograms did vary based on the formulation conditions of the SBR microparticle composite, although the loss factor remained unchanged. This lack of change in the loss factor can be attributed to the minimal impact of the particulate composites on the inherent loss factor of pure SBR. Importantly, the study successfully achieved multimodal and simultaneous measurements using dynamic mechanical analysis and dynamic micro X-ray CT.

Quantifying Soil Complexity Using Fisher Shannon Method on 3D X-ray Computed Tomography Scans.

The conversion of native forest into agricultural land, which is common in many parts of the world, poses important questions regarding soil degradation, demanding further efforts to better understand the effect of land use change on soil functions. With the advent of 3D computed tomography techniques and computing power, new methods are becoming available to address this question. In this direction, in the current work we implement a modification of the Fisher-Shannon method, borrowed from information theory, to quantify the complexity of twelve 3D CT soil samples from a sugarcane plantation and twelve samples from a nearby native Atlantic forest in northeastern Brazil. The distinction found between the samples from the sugar plantation and the Atlantic forest site is quite pronounced. The results at the level of 91.7% accuracy were obtained considering the complexity in the Fisher-Shannon plane. Atlantic forest samples are found to be generally more complex than those from the sugar plantation.
