Tax Evasion Attitudes of Small Firms in Low‐ and Middle‐income Countries: Evidence from Nigeria

SummaryMotivationThe need to tax small firms for revenue generation alongside the aim of establishing a sustainable tax system for such firms that encourages economic growth has long been a challenge for lower‐middle income countries, especially those with large informal economies, such as Nigeria. This article explores the drivers of tax morale of small firms in lower‐middle income countries.PurposeThis article investigates what determines the attitudes of small firms on their potential evasion of taxes on profits, defined here as tax morale. Our objective is to use a new, dedicated small firm survey in Nigeria with high power to construct regressions that can help explore, and contribute to, hypotheses about tax evasion attitudes of small firms.Methods and approachWe use a new nationally representative dataset of 8000 small firms in Africa’s largest economy, Nigeria, based on in‐person interviews conducted in the summer of 2018. To investigate key factors shaping tax morale of small firms in Nigeria, we estimate an ordinary least squares (OLS) regression model using a comprehensive set of explanatory variables based on the large‐N power of our survey.FindingsWe find that in Nigeria the normative dimension and business development dimension appear more important. Small firms that have a higher trust in the government seem to have better tax morale. But firms that believe corruption is relatively frequent have notably worse morale. Firms that are registered and have positive expectations of their own growth also appear to have better tax morale.Policy implicationsSmall companies play an important role in Nigerian society as both employers and drivers of economic growth. Yet, tax compliance among small companies in Nigeria remains very low, as evidenced through our survey. Investigating tax morale and compliance of small firms is critical to design strategies to incorporate them in the tax base to the benefit of the entire country. In particular, the findings suggest that building trust in government and business development policies is important to improve tax morale.

Development of Commute Mode Choice Model by Integrating Actively and Passively Collected Travel Data

Travel data collection, which is necessary for travel demand modeling, is always of great concern to modelers due to its huge cost and effort when a large sample is required to achieve satisfactory model precisions. In this paper, travel data collected based on a survey questionnaire and travelers’ active participation are called actively collected data (ACD). It is difficult to guarantee absolute randomness and unbiasedness in a sample when the ACD are collected due to self-selection issues. The aim of this study is to improve the model precision at low cost by using passively collected data (PCD), such as in-vehicle GPS data and transit smart card data, to release sample size restriction and reduce sampling bias of ACD in a commute mode choice model. In an empirical study, a multinomial-logit-based joint model is developed for commute mode choice by integrating ACD and PCD based on the choice-based sampling theory. A comprehensive set of explanatory variables are specified through data integration. Both simulation and empirical results show great improvement in coefficient precisions in the proposed joint model, relative to those in the ACD model and PCD model. In this study, ACD and PCD samples of Shanghai are integrated in the joint model so that several significantly influential level-of-service attributes are identified for auto, rail, and bus modes, and their impacts on commute mode choice probabilities are quantified. The findings can aid in better evaluating the program to improve the existing transit system.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder in Childhood: Healthcare Use in a Danish Birth Cohort during the First 12 Years of Life

To compare the mean number of medical and psychiatric hospital-based services in children with and without attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and to assess the effect of ADHD on hospital-based service use, including child-, parental-, and socioeconomic-related risk factors. A Danish birth cohort was followed through 12 years, and children with ADHD were identified using Danish nationwide registries. Poisson regression analyses were used to assess the association of ADHD with service use and to adjust for a comprehensive set of explanatory variables. Children diagnosed with ADHD used more medical and psychiatric hospital-based healthcare than those without ADHD. In children with ADHD, intellectual disability and parental psychiatric disorder were associated with increased medical and psychiatric service use. Low birth weight and low gestational age were associated with increased medical service use. Psychiatric comorbidity and having a divorced or single parent were associated with increased psychiatric service use. ADHD independently affected medical and psychiatric hospital-based service use even when adjusting for a comprehensive set of explanatory variables. However, the pattern of medical and psychiatric hospital-based service use is complex and cannot exclusively be explained by the child-, parental-, and socioeconomic-related variables examined in this study.

Suicide in Castellon, 2009–2015: Do sociodemographic and psychiatric factors help understand urban–rural differences?

IntroductionStudies have pointed to rurality as an important factor influencing suicide. Research so far suggests that several sociodemograpic and psychiatric factors might influence urban–rural differences in suicide. Also, their contribution appears to depend on sex and age. Unfortunately, studies including a comprehensive set of explanatory variables altogether are still scare and most studies have failed to present their analyses split by sex and age groups. Also, urban–rural differences in suicide in Spain have been rarely investigated. The present study aimed at explaining rural–urban differences in suicidality in the province of Castellon (Spain). A comprehensive set of sociodemographic and psychiatric factors was investigated and analyses were split by sex and age. Material and methodThe sample comprised all suicides recorded in the province of Castellon from January 2009 to December 2015 (n=343). Sociodemographic data included sex, age, and suicide method. Psychiatric data included the history of mental health service utilization, psychiatric diagnosis, suicide attempts, and psychiatric hospitalization. ResultsConsistent with past research, suicide rates were highest in rural areas, especially in men and older people. We also found that urban–rural differences in sociodemographic and psychiatric variables were sensitive to sex and age. Our results indicated that specialized mental health service use and accessibility to suicide means might help understand urban–rural differences in suicide, especially in men. When exploring urban–rural differences as a function of age, general practitioner visits for psychiatric reasons were more frequent in the older age group in rural areas. ConclusionsStudy implications for suicide prevention strategies in Spain are discussed.

Domestic mergers and acquisitions in BRICS countries: Acquirers and targets

We study the firm value determinants for domestic acquisitions within BRICS countries considering both acquirer and target shareholders. Targets earn significant positive announcement returns of 1.45% on average. Acquirers lose slightly. We employ a comprehensive set of explanatory variables and test for cross-sectional return drivers. Target returns are negatively related to pre-announcement returns and firm size, while they are positively related to GDP growth. Our results are consistent with insider trading capturing some of the target excess returns, which are highest for small targets based in countries with high recent GPD growth.

Understanding the Effects of Various Factors on the Public Response to Congestion Charge: A Latent Class Modeling Approach

The standard ordered response model (SORM) is a common disaggregate approach with ordered outcomes in which the effects of various exogenous attributes are assumed constant across ordinal choices. In this study, an innovative latent class based generalized ordered response model (LC-GORM) is formulated and used to assess the effects of various factors on respondents’ choice behavior with respect to congestion charge proposal for Jakarta, Indonesia. The proposed model probabilistically assigns respondents into selfish and altruistic class memberships (latently) based on their knowledge of the proposed scheme and their specific attributes. Aiming to capture observable preference heterogeneity across ordinal choices and allow the thresholds to be varied across observations, we parameterize the thresholds as a linear function of the exogenous variables for each ordinal preference. Using stated preference data collected in Jakarta in December 2013, we incorporate the influence of a comprehensive set of explanatory variables into four categories: charges, latent variables related to respondent’s psychological motivations, mobility attributes and socio-demographic characteristics. Empirical results obviously verify the existence of preference heterogeneity across outcomes. The findings confirm that the altruistic class are more sensitive with respect to acceptance of the scheme, while the selfish class are more sensitive with respect to rejection. The key factors influencing public acceptability include the charge level and respondent variables such as car dependency, awareness of the problem of cars in society, frequency of visits to the city center and frequency of private mode usage.

What types of banks profit most from fees charged? A cross-country examination of bank-specific and country-level determinants

The perception that banks are exploiting customers through their fee-charging practices in a bid to maximize profits, has fuelled widespread public interest in identifying the banks that profit most heavily from fees. Using hierarchical cross-country regression analyses, this paper seeks to answer the question – what types of banks profit most from fees charged? It also highlights the country level factors that influence banks’ ability to profit from fees charged. The factors at the country level distinguish between those that relate specifically to the financial services industry and broader macroeconomic indicators. The paper also identifies three channels through which national culture impacts banks’ ability to make high profits from fees. This paper uses the most comprehensive set of explanatory variables in studies of this nature. It has also extended the spatial scope of previous studies on bank fees by including data on banks from 46 developed and developing countries. In light of swelling public pressure on governments to do ‘something’ about bank fees, ill-advised measures are highlighted.

The Demand for Audit in Private Firms: Recent Large-Sample Evidence from the UK

Although theory suggests that companies would rationally select into audit even if it were not a legal requirement, many countries impose mandatory audits. This is arguably due to an audit having elements of a public good, which may result in not enough audits being purchased without regulatory intervention. The mandatory nature of public company audit has created problems for researchers wishing to investigate the demand for voluntary audit. Recent events in the UK, however, have provided such an environment. In the UK, private companies must publicly file financial statements and, until recently, they had also to be audited. However, this requirement has now been relaxed for many private companies. We are therefore able to examine the determinants of voluntary audit in a large sample of companies for which we have financial statement data. We analyse a sample of 6274 recently exempt companies, following them for three years post-exemption. We use agency theory and prior evidence to generate our hypotheses and examine them using a more comprehensive set of explanatory variables than has previously been available in the literature. Our results indicate that companies are more likely to purchase voluntary audits if they have greater agency costs, are riskier, wish to raise capital, purchase non-audit services from their auditor, and exhibited greater demand for audit assurance in the mandatory audit regime. We also document a trend away from audit over time. Overall, our results strongly support the idea that companies choose to be audited when it is in their interests to do so.

The drivers of interregional policy choices: Evidence from Italy

Theoretical developments in political economy analyses of intergovernmental transfers identify several factors previously ignored in the empirical literature and emphasize the importance of institutional details. Combined, these two developments create a degrees of freedom problem and make cross country samples less meaningful. This paper circumvents these problems by examining an Italian regional panel that minimizes the set of institutional conditioning factors and is large enough to examine a comprehensive set of explanatory variables. The estimates confirm the relevance of most political determinants and of standard economic and socio-demographic determinants of interregional redistribution. Differences in type of expenditures and intergovernmental relations are also considered.

Population changes in Czech passerines are predicted by their life‐history and ecological traits

A species’ susceptibility to environmental change might be predicted by its ecological and life‐history traits. However, the effects of such traits on long‐term bird population trends have not yet been assessed using a comprehensive set of explanatory variables. Moreover, the extent to which phylogeny affects patterns in the interspecific variability of population changes is unclear. Our study focuses on the interspecific variability in long‐term population trends and annual population fluctuations of 68 passerine species in the Czech Republic, assessing the effects of eight life‐history and five ecological traits. Ordination of life‐history traits of 68 species revealed a life‐history gradient, from ‘r‐selected’ (e.g. small body mass, short lifespan, high fecundity, large clutch size) to ‘K‐selected’ species. r‐selected species had more negative population trends than K‐selected species, and seed‐eaters declined compared with insectivores. We suggest that the r‐selected species probably suffer from widespread environmental changes, and the seed‐eaters from current changes in agriculture and land use. Populations of residents fluctuated more than populations of short‐distance migrants, probably due to the effect of winter climatic variability. Variance partitioning at three taxonomic levels showed that whereas population trends, population fluctuations and habitat specialization expressed the highest variability at the species level, most life‐history traits were more variable at higher taxonomic levels. These results explain the loss of statistical power in the relationship between life histories and population trends after controlling for phylogeny. However, we argue that a lack of significance after controlling for phylogeny should not reduce the value of such results for conservation purposes.

Duverger's Law and the Size of the Indian Party System

Duverger's law postulates that single-member plurality electoral systems lead to two-party systems. Existing scholarship regards India as an exception to this law at national level, but not at district level. This study tests the latter hypothesis through analysis of a comprehensive dataset covering Indian parliamentary elections in the period 1952—2004. The results show that a large number of Indian districts do not conform to the Duvergerian norm of two-party competition, and that there is no consistent movement towards the Duvergerian equilibrium. Furthermore, inter-region and inter-state variations in the size of district-level party systems make it difficult to generalize about the application of Duverger's law to the Indian case. The study concludes that a narrow focus on electoral rules is inadequate, and that a more comprehensive set of explanatory variables is needed to explain the size of the Indian party system even at the district level.

Gender differences in the management of risk factors for cardiovascular disease: The importance of insurance status

Despite cardiovascular disease (CVD) being the leading killer of both sexes in the US, there are indications that men and women have different experiences in the health system with prevention and treatment practices. Beyond largely descriptive findings, little research exists that addresses how men and women may differ in their response to certain key influences on CVD health services utilization. This paper examines gender differentials in the effect of insurance coverage on CVD preventive health services in the US. An economics framework is used to model individual demand for preventive services as a function of insurance status, while controlling for a comprehensive set of explanatory variables. The services analyzed include cholesterol and blood pressure screening, pharmaceutical use for hypertension and lipid disorders, and CVD-related physician visits. Both general and high-risk samples are evaluated. The results show that while a lack of insurance is associated with lower rates of utilization in both men and women, there are no observed gender differences in insurance-effects for recommended intervals of risk factor screening in the general population. However, for individuals with previously diagnosed heart disease or stroke, a lack of coverage is more strongly associated with lower rates of screening, pharmaceutical management, and physician contact in women than men. Potential reasons for these findings are discussed and policy implications are noted.

Marketing-Mix Standardization:

The increasing globalization of worl markets has made international marketing strategy more important than ever. Unfortunately, research about it has tended to use simple measures of performance and a limited set of explanatory strategy variables. The research reported here identifies strategies that lead to export performance. It includes a more comprehensive set of explanatory variables than previous studies and evaluates the reliability and validity of these measures. Research hypotheses are tested by data generated from a mail survey and in-depth interviews. Export performance is seen as an outcome of standardizing or adapting marketing strategies. Empirical results and s synthesis of in-depth interviews support some research hypotheses. The findings are used to generate a number of managerial implications in the context of international marketing strategy.
