Volatility and chemical composition of secondary organic aerosol derived from acenaphthylene and acenaphthene under various oxidant conditions

Acenaphthene (ACE) and acenaphthylene (ACY), distinguished by their unique structures, exhibit high reactivity among polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Particularly, the rapid ozonolysis of the carbon-carbon double bond in ACY and the swift oxidation of the fused cyclopenta ring in both ACE and ACY by NO3 underscore their distinct atmospheric fate. Through the utilization of a thermo denuder and high-resolution mass spectrometry, the chemical composition and volatility of four types of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) derived from ACE and ACY are investigated. The chemical composition of SOA formed by ACY ozonolysis is characterized by low O: C ratios and high unsaturation, suggesting the retention of aromatic structures. This leads to measured high SOA volatility and is consistent with the low reactivity of O3 with aromatic compounds. In contrast to ozonolysis, the reaction of NO3 with ACY could yield SOA with very low volatility, characterized by abundant dimers and highly oxidized products. Furthermore, the prevalence of compounds with 11 carbon atoms suggests the presence of complex mechanisms in the ACY oxidation process initiated by NO3, where dealkylation reactions and cleavage reactions may be pivotal. The diverse chemical composition and volatility of SOA from ACE and ACY reacting with NO3 radicals highlight the substantial impact of precursor structure on SOA chemical composition, particularly concerning the presence of active carbon-carbon double bonds. The higher O: C ratio of SOA from OH-initiated oxidation of ACE indicates the significant role of OH in the oxidation of PAHs. These findings offer valuable insights into the atmospheric fate of these PAHs, underscoring the necessity for a comprehensive understanding of their degradation processes and the formation of SOA.

Modeling the molecular composition of secondary organic aerosol under highly polluted conditions: A case study in the Yangtze River Delta Region in China

A near-explicit mechanism, the master chemical mechanism (MCMv3.3.1), coupled with the Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) model (CMAQ-MCM-SOA), was applied to investigate the characteristics of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) during a pollution event in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region in summer 2018. Model performances in predicting explicit volatile organic compounds (VOCs), organic aerosol (OA), secondary organic carbon (SOC), and other related pollutants in Taizhou, as well as ozone (O3) and fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in multiple cities in this region, were evaluated against observations and model predictions by the CMAQ model coupled with a lumped photochemical mechanism (SAPRC07tic, S07). MCM and S07 exhibited similar performances in predicting gaseous species, while MCM better captured the observed PM2.5 and inorganic aerosols. Both models underpredicted OA concentrations. When excluding data during biomass burning events, SOC concentrations were underpredicted by the CMAQ-MCM-SOA model (−28.4 %) and overpredicted by the CMAQ-S07 model (134.4 %), with better agreement with observations in the trend captured by the CMAQ-MCM-SOA model. Dicarbonyl SOA accounted for a significant fraction of total SOA in the YRD, while organic nitrates originating from aromatics were the most abundant species contributing to the SOA formation from gas-particle partitioning. The oxygen-to‑carbon ratio (O/C) for SOA and OA were 0.68–0.75 and 0.20–0.65, respectively, indicating a higher oxidation state in the areas influenced by biogenic emissions. Finally, the phase state of SOA was examined by calculating the glass transition temperature (Tg) based on its molecular composition. It was found that semi-solid state characterized SOA in the YRD, which could potentially impact their chemical transformation and lifetimes along with those of their precursors.

Formation of secondary organic aerosols from Cl-initiated oxidation of anisole: Rapid release of ultrafine particles and organic chlorides

Recent studies have highlighted the increased occurrence of reactive chlorine, drawing significant attention to the process of chlorinated chemical oxidation of oxygenated aromatics emitted from biomass burning (BB) in the formation of secondary organic aerosols (SOA). This study selected an oxygenated aromatic, anisole, as a representative of BB, and investigated the products and mechanisms of its reaction with Cl•, as well as exploring the implications of precursor-to-oxidant ratio ([anisole/Cl2]0), NOx levels, and seed particles on SOA generation. The gas-phase composition, SOA composition, and particle information were determined using a single-photon ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (SPIMS), a thermal desorption unit gas chromatography mass spectrometry (TDU-GC/MS), and a scanning mobility particle sizer (SMPS), respectively. Experimental results indicate that within minutes of turning on the ultraviolet (UV) lights, a large quantity of ultrafine particles (UFPs) (diameter <100 nm) is immediately formed. The SOA yield is significantly dependent on [anisole/Cl2]0, decreasing from 66.2% to 20.0% as the [anisole/Cl2]0 increases. Upon oxidation by Cl•, anisole promptly released organic chlorides, including 2-chlorophenol and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. The addition of NOx decreased the SOA yield, enhanced the role of OH• in the reaction process, and led to the formation of organic nitrogen products, such as C6H5NO3 and C7H7NO4. Furthermore, Cl• primarily initiates reactions through H-abstraction and Cl-substitution, resulting in the oxidation products largely retaining the benzene ring. This provides a potential explanation for the high SOA yield induced by Cl• in this study. Overall, our work suggests that the release of UFPs and organic chlorides can be found in the Cl-initiated oxidation of anisole, which contributes to high SOA yields. Against the backdrop of increasing wildfire frequency due to global warming, it is necessary to consider the contributions and sources of UFPs and organic chlorides caused by the reaction of wildfire emissions with Cl atoms.

Impact of temperature on the role of Criegee intermediates and peroxy radicals in dimer formation from β-pinene ozonolysis

Abstract. Stabilized Criegee intermediates (SCIs) and organic peroxy radicals (RO2) are critical in atmospheric oxidation processes and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. However, the influence of temperature on their corresponding reaction mechanisms in SOA formation is unclear. Through utilizing formic acid as a SCI scavenger and regulating the ratio of hydroperoxyl radials (HO2) to RO2 ([HO2]/[RO2]) from ∼ 0.3 to ∼ 1.9 using different concentrations of CO, the roles of RO2 and SCIs in SOA formation were investigated from 248 to 298 K, particularly for dimer formation in β-pinene ozonolysis. The SOA yield increased by 21 % from 298 to 273 K, while it decreased by 40 % from 273 to 248 K. Both changing [HO2]/[RO2] and scavenging SCIs significantly affect SOA yield and composition. SCI reactions accounted for more than 40 % of dimer and SOA mass formation for all temperatures. Increasing [HO2]/[RO2] inhibited dimer and SOA formation, and this inhibition became larger with decreasing temperature. Compared to low [HO2]/[RO2] (0.30–0.34), the dimer abundance at high [HO2]/[RO2] (1.53–1.88) decreased by about 31 % at 298 K and 70 % at 248 K. [HO2]/[RO2] has a specific impact on SCI-controlled dimers at lower temperatures by especially influencing the C9–SCI reactions with RO2. The dimers formed from C9–SCI reactions with RO2 were estimated to decrease by 61 % at high [HO2]/[RO2] compared to low [HO2]/[RO2] at 248 K. The high reactivity and substantial contribution to SOA of β-pinene-derived SCIs at lower temperatures observed in this study suggest that monoterpene-derived SCI reactions should be accounted for in describing colder regions of the atmosphere.

Secondary Brown Carbon Formation From Photooxidation of Furans From Biomass Burning

AbstractFurans are a major class of volatile organic compounds emitted from biomass burning. Their high reactivity with atmospheric oxidants leads to the formation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), including secondary brown carbon (BrC) that can affect global climate via interactions with solar radiation. Here, we investigate the optical properties and chemical composition of SOA generated via photooxidation of furfural, 2‐methylfuran, and 3‐methylfuran under dry (RH &lt; 5%) and humid (RH ∼ 50%) conditions in the presence of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ammonium sulfate seed aerosol. Dry furfural oxidation has the greatest BrC formation, including reduced nitrogen‐containing organic compounds (NOCs) in SOA, which are dominated by amines and amides formed from reactions between carbonyls and ammonia/ammonium. Based on the products detected, we propose novel formation pathways of NOCs in furfural photooxidation, which can contribute to BrC via accretion reactions during the photochemical aging of biomass burning plumes.

Effect of relative humidity on the molecular composition of secondary organic aerosols from α-pinene ozonolysis

Secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) originating from the oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds such as monoterpenes by atmospheric oxidants (e.g. OH, ozone, and NO3), constitute a widespread source of organic aerosols in the atmosphere.

Emerging investigator series: secondary organic aerosol formation from photooxidation of acyclic terpenes in an oxidation flow reactor.

One major challenge in predicting secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation in the atmosphere is incomplete representation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) emitted from plants, particularly those that are emitted as a result of stress - a condition that is becoming more frequent in a rapidly changing climate. One of the most common types of BVOCs emitted by plants in response to environmental stress are acyclic terpenes. In this work, SOA is generated from the photooxidation of acyclic terpenes in an oxidation flow reactor and compared to SOA production from a reference cyclic terpene - α-pinene. The acyclic terpenes used as SOA precursors included β-myrcene, β-ocimene, and linalool. Results showed that oxidation of all acyclic terpenes had lower SOA yields measured after 4 days photochemical age, in comparison to α-pinene. However, there was also evidence that the condensed organic products that formed, while a smaller amount overall, had a higher oligomeric content. In particular, β-ocimene SOA had higher oligomeric content than all the other chemical systems studied. SOA composition data from ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MS) was combined with mechanistic modeling using the Generator for Explicit Chemistry and Kinetics of Organics in the Atmosphere (GECKO-A) to explore chemical mechanisms that could lead to this oligomer formation. Calculations based on composition data suggested that β-ocimene SOA was more viscous with a higher glass transition temperature than other SOA generated from acyclic terpene oxidation. This was attributed to a higher oligomeric content compared to other SOA systems studied. These results contribute to novel chemical insights about SOA formation from acyclic terpenes and relevant chemistry processes, highlighting the importance of improving underrepresented biogenic SOA formation in chemical transport models.

Effects of NO and SO2 on the secondary organic aerosol formation from isoprene photooxidation

Investigation of the effects of anthropogenic pollutants on the mass concentrations, particle number concentrations, and chemical compositions of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation is essential in understanding the photooxidation mechanism of volatile organic compounds but has been proven to be a very challenging experimental target because of their complex processes. Here, the effects of NO and SO2 on SOA formation from isoprene photooxidation were studied by a number of laboratory studies. The results indicate the accumulated O3 upon the NO conversion triggers the main oxidation reaction, by which the oxidants (i.e., OH and SO4−) are derived. The SOA mass concentrations and particle number concentrations are enhanced by NO under low NO concentrations but suppressed by NO under high NO concentrations, which are consistent with previous studies (Kroll et al., 2005, 2006). This could be rationalized that the large amount of accumulated O3 inhibit the multi-step isoprene oxidation and a large number of less oxidized products (m/z < 130) absorb or condense on the surface of existing particles, which decelerate the SOA nucleation and growth. The presence of SO2 accelerates the conversion of NO and the accumulation of O3, which promotes the main oxidation reaction of isoprene. New compounds are observed at m/z = 134, 137, 150, 152, and 179 measured by threshold photoionization (positive ion mode) with a tunable vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser and are found to be mainly formed from the isoprene oxidization by O3 and OH. The present findings provide both macroscopic and microscopic information to advance understanding of atmospheric components affected by the anthropogenic-biogenic interactions in the neighborhood of emission origins.

Significant Reductions in Secondary Aerosols after the Three-Year Action Plan in Beijing Summer.

Air quality in China has continuously improved during the Three-Year Action Plan (2018-2020); however, the changes in aerosol composition, properties, and sources in Beijing summer remain poorly understood. Here, we conducted real-time measurements of aerosol composition in five summers from 2018 to 2022 along with WRF-Community Multiscale Air Quality simulations to characterize the changes in aerosol chemistry and the roles of meteorology and emission reductions. Largely different from winter, secondary inorganic aerosol and photochemical-related secondary organic aerosol (SOA) showed significant decreases by 55-67% in summer, and the most decreases occurred in 2021. Comparatively, the decreases in the primary aerosol species and gaseous precursors were comparably small. While decreased atmospheric oxidation capacity as indicated by ozone changes played an important role in changing SOA composition, the large decrease in aerosol liquid water and small increase in particle acidity were critical for nitrate changes by decreasing gas-particle partitioning substantially (∼28%). Analysis of meteorological influences demonstrated clear and similar transitions in aerosol composition and formation mechanisms at a relative humidity of 50-60% in five summers. Model simulations revealed that emission controls played the decisive role in reducing sulfate, primary OA, and anthropogenic SOA during the Three-Year Action Plan, while meteorology affected more nitrate and biogenic SOA.

Low-NO-like Oxidation Pathway Makes a Significant Contribution to Secondary Organic Aerosol in Polluted Urban Air.

Anthropogenic pollutants can greatly mediate formation pathways and chemical compositions of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in urban atmospheres. We investigated the molecular tracers for different types of SOA in PM2.5 under varying NO/NO2 conditions in Guangzhou using source analysis of particle-phase speciated organics obtained from an iodide chemical ionization mass spectrometer with a Filter Inlet for Gases and AEROsols (FIGAERO-I-CIMS). Results show that low-NO-like pathways (when NO/NO2 < 0.2) explained ∼75% of the total measured FIGAERO-OA during regional transport periods, which was enriched in more-oxidized C4-C6 non-nitrogenous compounds over ozone accumulation. Daytime high-NO chemistry played larger roles (38%) in local pollution episodes, with organic nitrates (ONs) and nitrophenols increasing with enhanced aerosol water content and nitrate fraction. Nighttime NO3-initiated oxidation, characterized by monoterpene-derived ONs, accounted for comparable percentages (10-12%) of FIGAERO-OA for both two periods. Furthermore, the presence of organosulfates (OSs) improves the understanding of the roles of aqueous-phase processes in SOA production. Carbonyl-derived OSs exhibited a preferential formation under conditions of high aerosol acidity and/or abundant sulfate, which correlated well with low-NO-like SOA. Our results demonstrate the importance of NO/NO2 ratios in controlling SOA compositions, as well as interactions between water content, aerosol acidity, and inorganic salts in gas-to-particle partitioning of condensable organics.

Relative humidity-dependent evolution of molecular composition of α-pinene secondary organic aerosol upon heterogeneous oxidation by hydroxyl radicals

Heterogeneous oxidation by gas-phase oxidants is an important chemical transformation pathway of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) and plays an important role in controlling the abundance, properties, as well as climate and health impacts of aerosols. However, our knowledge on this heterogeneous chemistry remains inadequate. In this study, the heterogeneous oxidation of α-pinene ozonolysis SOA by hydroxyl (OH) radicals was investigated under both low and high relative humidity (RH) conditions, with an emphasis on the evolution of molecular composition of SOA and its RH dependence. It is found that the heterogeneous oxidation of SOA at an OH exposure level equivalent to 12 hr of atmospheric aging leads to particle mass loss of 60% at 25% RH and 95% at 90% RH. The heterogeneous oxidation strongly changes the molecular composition of SOA. The dimer-to-monomer signal ratios increase dramatically with rising OH exposure, in particular under high RH conditions, suggesting that aerosol water stimulates the reaction of monomers with OH radicals more than that of dimers. In addition, the typical SOA tracer compounds such as pinic acid, pinonic acid, hydroxy pinonic acid and dimer esters (e.g., C17H26O8 and C19H28O7) have lifetimes of several hours against heterogeneous OH oxidation under typical atmospheric conditions, which highlights the need for the consideration of their heterogeneous loss in the estimation of monoterpene SOA concentrations using tracer-based methods. Our study sheds lights on the heterogeneous oxidation chemistry of monoterpene SOA and would help to understand their evolution and impacts in the atmosphere.

Effects of storage conditions on the molecular-level composition of organic aerosol particles

Abstract. A significant fraction of atmospheric aerosol particles, which affect both the Earth's climate and human health, can be attributed to organic compounds and especially to secondary organic aerosol (SOA). To better understand the sources and processes generating organic aerosol particles, detailed chemical characterization is necessary, and particles are often collected onto filters and subsequently analyzed by liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC–MS). A downside of such offline analysis techniques is the uncertainty regarding artifactual changes in composition occurring during sample collection, storage, extraction and analysis. The goal of this work was to characterize how storage conditions and storage time can affect the chemical composition of SOA generated from β-pinene and naphthalene, as well as from urban atmospheric aerosol samples. SOA samples were produced in the laboratory using an aerosol flow tube and were collected onto PTFE filters, whereas ambient samples were collected onto quartz filters with a high-volume air sampler. To characterize temporal changes in SOA composition, all samples were extracted and analyzed immediately after collection but were also stored as aqueous extracts or as filters for 24 h and up to 4 weeks at three different temperatures of +20, −20 or −80 ∘C in order to assess whether a lower storage temperature would be favorable. Analysis was conducted using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography–high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC–HRMS). Both principal component analysis (PCA) and time series of selected compounds were analyzed to identify the compositional changes over time. We show that the chemical composition of organic aerosols remained stable during low-temperature storage conditions, while storage at room temperature led to significant changes over time, even at short storage times of only 1 d. This indicates that it is necessary to freeze samples immediately after collection, and this requirement is especially important when automated ambient sampling devices are used where filters might be stored in the device for several days before being transferred to a laboratory.

Time-Resolved Molecular Characterization of Secondary Organic Aerosol Formed from OH and NO3 Radical Initiated Oxidation of a Mixture of Aromatic Precursors.

Aromatic hydrocarbons (ArHCs) and oxygenated aromatic hydrocarbons (ArHC-OHs) are emitted from a variety of anthropogenic activities and are important precursors of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) in urban areas. Here, we analyzed and compared the composition of SOA formed from the oxidation of a mixture of aromatic VOCs by OH and NO3 radicals. The VOC mixture was composed of toluene (C7H8), p-xylene + ethylbenzene (C8H10), 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (C9H12), phenol (C6H6O), cresol (C7H8O), 2,6-dimethylphenol (C8H10O), and 2,4,6-trimethylphenol (C9H12O) in a proportion where the aromatic VOCs were chosen to approximate day-time traffic-related emissions in Delhi, and the aromatic alcohols make up 20% of the mixture. These VOCs are prominent in other cities as well, including those influenced by biomass combustion. In the NO3 experiments, large contributions from CxHyOzN dimers (C15-C18) were observed, corresponding to fast SOA formation within 15-20 min after the start of chemistry. Additionally, the dimers were a mixture of different combinations of the initial VOCs, highlighting the importance of exploring SOAs from mixed VOC systems. In contrast, the experiments with OH radicals yielded gradual SOA mass formation, with CxHyOz monomers (C6-C9) being the dominant constituents. The evolution of SOA composition with time was tracked and a fast degradation of dimers was observed in the NO3 experiments, with concurrent formation of monomer species. The rates of dimer decomposition in NO3 SOA were ∼2-3 times higher compared to those previously determined for α-pinene + O3 SOA, highlighting the dependence of particle-phase reactions on VOC precursors and oxidants. In contrast, the SOA produced in the OH experiments did not dramatically change over the same time frame. No measurable effects of humidity were observed on the composition and evolution of SOA.

Photoaging of phenolic secondary organic aerosol in the aqueous phase: evolution of chemical and optical properties and effects of oxidants

Abstract. While gas-phase reactions are well established to have significant impacts on the mass concentration, chemical composition, and optical properties of secondary organic aerosol (SOA), the aqueous-phase aging of SOA remains poorly understood. In this study, we performed a series of long-duration photochemical aging experiments to investigate the evolution of the composition and light absorption of the aqueous SOA (aqSOA) from guaiacyl acetone (GA), a semivolatile phenolic carbonyl that is common in biomass burning smoke. The aqSOA was produced from reactions of GA with hydroxyl radical (•OH-aqSOA) or a triplet excited state of organic carbon (3C∗-aqSOA) and was then photoaged in water under conditions that simulate sunlight exposure in northern California for up to 48 h. The effects of increasing aqueous-phase •OH or 3C∗ concentration on the photoaging of the aqSOA were also studied. High-resolution aerosol mass spectrometry (HR-AMS) and UV–Vis spectroscopy were utilized to characterize the composition and the light absorptivity of the aqSOA and to track their changes during aging. Compared to •OH-aqSOA, the 3C∗-aqSOA is produced more rapidly and shows less oxidation, a greater abundance of oligomers, and higher light absorption. Prolonged photoaging promotes fragmentation and the formation of more volatile and less light-absorbing products. More than half of the initial aqSOA mass is lost, and substantial photobleaching occurs after 10.5 h of prolonged aging under simulated sunlight illumination for 3C∗-aqSOA and 48 h for •OH-aqSOA. By performing positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis of the combined HR-AMS and UV–Vis spectral data, we resolved three generations of aqSOA with distinctly different chemical and optical properties. The first-generation aqSOA shows significant oligomer formation and enhanced light absorption at 340–400 nm. The second-generation aqSOA is enriched in functionalized GA species and has the highest mass absorption coefficients in 300–500 nm, while the third-generation aqSOA contains more fragmented products and is the least light absorbing. These results suggest that intermediately aged phenolic aqSOA is more light absorbing than other generations, and that the light absorptivity of phenolic aqSOA results from a competition between brown carbon (BrC) formation and photobleaching, which is dependent on aging time. Although photoaging generally increases the oxidation of aqSOA, a slightly decreased O/C of the •OH-aqSOA is observed after 48 h of prolonged photoaging with additional •OH exposure. This is likely due to greater fragmentation and evaporation of highly oxidized compounds. Increased oxidant concentration accelerates the transformation of aqSOA and promotes the decay of BrC chromophores, leading to faster mass reduction and photobleaching. In addition, compared with •OH, photoaging by 3C∗ produces more low-volatility functionalized products, which counterbalances part of the aqSOA mass loss due to fragmentation and evaporation.

An intercomparison study of four different techniques for measuring the chemical composition of nanoparticles

Abstract. Currently, the complete chemical characterization of nanoparticles (&lt; 100 nm) represents an analytical challenge, since these particles are abundant in number but have negligible mass. Several methods for particle-phase characterization have been recently developed to better detect and infer more accurately the sources and fates of sub-100 nm particles, but a detailed comparison of different approaches is missing. Here we report on the chemical composition of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) nanoparticles from experimental studies of α-pinene ozonolysis at −50, −30, and −10 ∘C and intercompare the results measured by different techniques. The experiments were performed at the Cosmics Leaving OUtdoor Droplets (CLOUD) chamber at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The chemical composition was measured simultaneously by four different techniques: (1) thermal desorption–differential mobility analyzer (TD–DMA) coupled to a NO3- chemical ionization–atmospheric-pressure-interface–time-of-flight (CI–APi–TOF) mass spectrometer, (2) filter inlet for gases and aerosols (FIGAERO) coupled to an I− high-resolution time-of-flight chemical ionization mass spectrometer (HRToF-CIMS), (3) extractive electrospray Na+ ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (EESI-TOF), and (4) offline analysis of filters (FILTER) using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography (UHPLC) and heated electrospray ionization (HESI) coupled to an Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometer (HRMS). Intercomparison was performed by contrasting the observed chemical composition as a function of oxidation state and carbon number, by estimating the volatility and comparing the fraction of volatility classes, and by comparing the thermal desorption behavior (for the thermal desorption techniques: TD–DMA and FIGAERO) and performing positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis for the thermograms. We found that the methods generally agree on the most important compounds that are found in the nanoparticles. However, they do see different parts of the organic spectrum. We suggest potential explanations for these differences: thermal decomposition, aging, sampling artifacts, etc. We applied PMF analysis and found insights of thermal decomposition in the TD–DMA and the FIGAERO.

Insights into the compositional differences of PM1 and PM2.5 from aerosol mass spectrometer measurements in Beijing, China

Aerosol mass spectrometers (AMS) have been widely used for characterization of submicron aerosol (PM1) species in the world. However, the chemical differences between PM1 and fine particles (PM2.5) in megacities are poorly understood. Here a PM1 high-resolution AMS with standard vaporizer (SV) and a PM2.5 time-of-flight aerosol chemical speciation monitor (ToF-ACSM) with capture vaporizer (CV) were deployed simultaneously in summer and winter in Beijing, China, and the chemical differences of non-refractory aerosol species between PM1 and PM2.5 were characterized. Our results showed that aerosol species in PM2.5 were overall highly correlated with those in PM1 (r2 > 0.8), yet the PM1/PM2.5 ratios varied largely for different aerosol species. Nitrate existed dominantly in PM1 (80–90%), while a considerable fraction of sulfate (30–45%) was observed in the range of 1–2.5 μm (PM1–2.5). Comparatively, PM1 organics showed higher fractions in PM2.5 in summer than winter (∼70%). The changes in PM1/PM2.5 ratios of secondary inorganic aerosol (SIA) depended strongly on relative humidity (RH) in summer with considerable decreases as the increase of RH, while such a RH dependence of PM1/PM2.5 ratios was not significant in winter due to the absence of high RH data. We further compared the source apportionment results of organic aerosol (OA) between PM1 and PM2.5. Similar to previous studies, the SV AMS reported ubiquitously higher primary OA than the CV ToF-ACSM, nearly by a factor of 2 for cooking OA, and the difference in secondary OA composition can be substantial, particularly in winter. With the simultaneous measurements of AMS and ACSM, a parameterized relationship between oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) ratio and CV f44 (fraction of m/z 44 in OA) in summer and winter was developed, which has a potential implication for studying the oxidation and hygroscopicity properties of OA considering the rapid increases in CV ToF-ACSM measurements worldwide.

NH3 Weakens the Enhancing Effect of SO2 on Biogenic Secondary Organic Aerosol Formation

Anthropogenic air pollutants can be involved in biogenic secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. However, such interactions are currently one of the least understood aspects of atmospheric chemistry. Herein, SOA formation via chemical interactions between anthropogenic SO2, NH3, and O3 and biogenic β-caryophyllene was investigated. It is shown that although SO2 considerably enhanced SOA formation, this enhancing effect was weakened by NH3 when SO2 and NH3 coexisted. NH3-induced neutralization of particle acidity generated by SO2 oxidation may be the primary driving factor of this weakening effect. Molecular-level characterization using high-resolution quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry revealed additional connections between NH3-induced changes in SOA composition and aerosol acidity. Specifically, the lower relative abundances of several main products generated in the presence of SO2 and NH3 than those formed in the presence of only SO2 were consistent with their suppressed formation by lower seed acidity. The suppression of oligomer formation by NH3 provided more evidence for the weakening of acid-catalyzed processes caused by acidity neutralization. Accordingly, the current study demonstrates that NH3 as a less effectively regulated alkaline gas resulting from an unbalanced reduction of different pollutants must be considered with caution when evaluating effects of SO2 on SOA formation via anthropogenic–biogenic interactions.

Comparison of the Yield and Chemical Composition of Secondary Organic Aerosol Generated from the OH and Cl Oxidation of Decamethylcyclopentasiloxane

Cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes (cVMS) that are emitted from industrial processes and consumer products often dominate the burden of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in occupied spaces. cVMS may contribute to oxygenated VOC and secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation following oxidation by gas-phase radicals in both indoor and outdoor source regions. Several recent studies examined the SOA formation potential of decamethylcyclopentasiloxane (D5) following exposure to hydroxyl radicals (OH) and found that this reaction generates SOA in high yield following multiple days of oxidative aging. Chlorine atoms (Cl) may compete with OH for the oxidative loss of D5 in indoor and outdoor source regions with active chlorine chemistry, but the SOA formation potential of D5 + Cl reactions has not been studied. Here, we characterized the yield and chemical composition of SOA generated from Cl oxidation of D5 in an oxidation flow reactor (OFR) under dry [relative humidity (RH) < 5%] and humid (RH = 40%) conditions and compared results to the yield and composition of SOA generated from OH oxidation of D5. D5 was oxidized using integrated OH and Cl exposures (OHexp and Clexp) ranging from 1.1 × 1012 to 8.2 × 1012 cm–3 s and from 1.6 × 1010 to 1.6 × 1012 cm–3 s, respectively. Like OH, Cl facilitated multistep SOA oxidative aging over the range of OFR conditions that were studied, with maximum SOA mass yields of 1.5 and 1.3 obtained following OH and Cl oxidation of D5 under humid conditions. These results suggest that indoor and outdoor source regions that are significantly influenced by chlorine chemistry may enhance the atmospheric SOA formation potential of D5.

Effect of OH scavengers on the chemical composition of α-pinene secondary organic aerosol.

OH scavengers are extensively used in studies of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) because they create an idealized environment where only a single oxidation pathway is occurring. Here, we present a detailed molecular characterization of SOA produced from α-pinene + O3 with a variety of OH scavengers using the extractive electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometer in our atmospheric simulation chamber, which is complemented by characterizing the gas phase composition in flow reactor experiments. Under our experimental conditions, radical chemistry largely controls the composition of SOA. Besides playing their desired role in suppressing the reaction of α-pinene with OH, OH scavengers alter the reaction pathways of radicals produced from α-pinene + O3. This involves changing the HO2 : RO2 ratio, the identity of the RO2 radicals present, and the RO2 major sinks. As a result, the use of the OH scavengers has significant effects on the composition of SOA, including inclusions of scavenger molecules in SOA, the promotion of fragmentation reactions, and depletion of dimers formed via α-pinene RO2-RO2 reactions. To date fragmentation reactions and inclusion of OH scavenger products into secondary organic aerosol have not been reported in atmospheric simulation chamber studies. Therefore, care should be considered if and when to use an OH scavenger during experiments.

Differential cardiopulmonary effects of isoprene-versus toluene-generated photochemically-Aged smog in rats

Photochemical smog is a complex mixture of primary and secondary air pollutants including secondary organic aerosols (SOA), ozone and reactive aldehydes which has been linked to increased risk of adverse cardiovascular and pulmonary responses. The components and related health effects of smog are thought to be determined both by the precursor chemicals and reaction conditions. Here we examined the difference between isoprene- (IS-) and toluene- (TL) generated smog in causing cardiopulmonary effects in rats. Wistar-Kyoto rats were exposed to either filtered air (FA) or smog for 4 h. IS-smog contained 660 ppb NO2, 335 ppb O3, and 178 μg/m3 SOA while TL-smog had 380 ppb NO2, 250 ppb O3, and 1,250 μg/m3 SOA. Whole-body plethysmography was performed at baseline and after each exposure and left ventricular function was measured using a Millar probe and arrhythmic sensitivity to aconitine. Tidal volume decreased only after IS-smog while inspiratory time and nasal injury increased following both smog atmospheres. Only TL-smog caused an increase in PenH, which is an indicator of airway irritation. On the other hand, only IS-smog caused left ventricular pressure to decrease, while only TL-smog increased sensitivity to cardiac arrhythmia. These data indicate that the source of smog atmosphere plays a large role in the types of responses it elicits and that its relative SOA and gaseous composition determine the extent of cardiovascular versus respiratory effects.
