Unexpectedly strong heat stress induction of monoterpene, methylbutenol, and other volatile emissions for conifers in the cypress family (Cupressaceae)

We investigated the biogenic volatile organic compound (BVOC) emission rates and composition of Cupressaceae species and how the emissions change in response to moderate warming and more severe heat stress. A total of 8 species from 7 distinct Cupressaceae genera were targeted in this study and exposed to laboratory-simulated heatwaves. Each plant was enclosed in a temperature-controlled glass chamber and allowed to equilibrate at 30 °C for 24 h. The temperature was then increased stepwise from 33 °C to 43 °C in 2 °C increments, with each step lasting 2 h, and was finally kept at 45 °C for 12 h. The BVOC emissions were measured periodically using an automated air sampler coupled to a gas chromatograph.Most of the sampled Cupressaceae species (6 out of 8) were low BVOC emitters (<0.3 μgC g−1 h−1) at 30 °C. However, the BVOC emissions of all 8 species increased strongly with temperature, and in most species (5 out of 8), the emissions continued to increase with longer exposure times to heat stress. The largest increase was observed in Thuja occidentalis and Chamaecyparis thyoides, which reached maximum emissions of 350 and 190 μgC g−1 h−1, respectively. Of the different BVOCs, monoterpenes responded most strongly to heat stress, with Q10 temperature coefficients typically ranging between 7.6 and 22, which were significantly greater than the model-predicted value of 2.7. Other BVOCs including sesquiterpenes, C9 aromatics (only detected in Calocedrus decurrens), methylbutenols, and other C5 oxygenates were also induced by heat stress, but generally at a lower magnitude than monoterpenes.Our results indicate that Cupressaceae are a large but typically dormant source of reactive volatile hydrocarbons (mostly monoterpenes) whose emissions can be activated by heat stress. This phenomenon could have important implications for ozone and aerosol formation, air quality, and human health, particularly in urban areas that are prone to heatwaves.

Identifi cation of Adhesives for Repairing Ancient Ceramics: The Case of the Neolithic and Chalcolithic of Far Northeast Europe

This study focuses on the composition of the adhesives used to repair clay vessels, and on the technique of their preparation in the Late Neolithic and Chalcolithic (late 4th to early 3rd millennia BC) sites of Far Northeast Europe (the Republic of Komi and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug). Remains of adhesives were detected on 70 of 171 repaired pots. To date, five samples of ceramics from dwellings of the Chuzhyael culture have been analyzed. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry revealed no markers of coniferous trees or bitumen; but did reveal markers of birch, suggesting that fractures and cracks on broken pots were plastered with birch tar. The composition of organic compounds in samples indicates the use of two vessels in the technological process: in one of them, birch bark was subjected to pyrolysis, while the other was a receptacle for tar. This comparatively complex technology reveals one more specialization in the domestic manufacture of the taiga hunter-gatherers, including the use of special furnaces. Analytic procedures employed by us open up new prospects for the study of the material culture of Far Northeast Europe, extend our knowledge of domestic manufacture, and offer new material for AMS dating.

Control of inorganic and organic phosphorus molecules on microbial activity, and the stoichiometry of nutrient cycling in soils in an arid, agricultural ecosystem

Background The dynamics of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) in soils determine their fertility and crop growth in agroecosystems. These dynamics depend on microbial metabolism, which in turn depends on nutrient availability. Farmers typically apply either mineral or organic fertilizers to increase the availability of nutrients in soils. Phosphorus, which usually limits plant growth, is one of the most applied nutrients. Our knowledge is limited regarding how different forms of P impact the ability of microbes in soils to produce the enzymes required to release nutrients, such as C, N and P from different substrates. Methods In this study, we used the arable layer of a calcareous soil obtained from an alfalfa cropland in Cuatro Cienegas, México, to perform an incubation experiment, where five different phosphate molecules were added as treatments substrates: three organic molecules (RNA, adenine monophosphate (AMP) and phytate) and two inorganic molecules (calcium phosphate and ammonium phosphate). Controls did not receive added phosphorus. We measured nutrient dynamics and soil microbial activity after 19 days of incubation. Results Different P molecules affected potential microbial C mineralization (CO2-C) and enzyme activities, specifically in the organic treatments. P remained immobilized in the microbial biomass (Pmic) regardless of the source of P, suggesting that soil microorganisms were limited by phosphorus. Higher mineralization rates in soil amended with organic P compounds depleted dissolved organic carbon and increased nitrification. The C:N:P stoichiometry of the microbial biomass implied a change in the microbial community which affected the carbon use efficiency (CUE), threshold elemental ratio (TER), and homeostasis. Conclusion Different organic and inorganic sources of P affect soil microbial community structure and metabolism. This modifies the dynamics of soil C, N and P. These results highlight the importance of considering the composition of organic matter and phosphate compounds used in agriculture since their impact on the microbial activity of the soil can also affect plant productivity.

Determination of selenium in polyheteroatomic organic compounds by microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry

Currently, the problem of selenium determination in various objects attracts a large number of scientists. Interest in this area is attributed to the biological importance of selenium, since it is both an important nutrient and has a toxic effect on the body, depending on its amount and the properties of the compounds in which it is contained. Checking the purity of selenium-containing organic compounds (both determination of impurities and analysis of the basic composition), which is carried out by methods of elemental analysis, is an important task, however, in modern literature there is lack of information regarding this problem. The purpose of the presented study is to develop a method for the determination of selenium in the basic composition of synthetic polyheteroatomic organic compounds by microwave plasma atomic emission spectrometry. Various selenodiazole derivatives were mainly used for analysis. Optimal conditions for sample preparation and atomic emission determination of the selenium content were specified. To mineralize the substances under study, oxygen flask combustion was used with the addition of potassium nitrate, which improves combustion and prevents the formation of soot. Hydrochloric acid at a concentration of 0.1 M was used as an absorption solution. It is noted that before measurements it is necessary to purge the monochromator and optimize the pressure in the atomic emission spectrometer nebulizer and optimize pressure in the atomizer. In addition, the number of replicates and sampling time were increased to optimize selenium measurement. Under specified conditions, the metrological characteristics of the technique were determined: the detection limit and quantitation limit, intra-laboratory precision and accuracy. Selenium was determined in 11 synthetic organic compounds with selenium content ranged from 12 to 51%. The error of the analysis did not exceed 0.3%, which meets the requirements of organic elemental analysis.

Cell-type specific localization and biological activity of the volatiles from the endemic species Chaerophyllum coloratum L.

Main conclusionNew findings are presented for Chaerophyllum coloratum L. on the volatile composition of the essential oil, based on data of hydrosol and fresh plant material, light and electron microscopy of leaves, and cytotoxic and antiviral activity.The widespread Apiaceae family includes many well-known and economically important plants that are cultivated as food or spices. Many produce essential oils and are generally a source of secondary metabolites and compounds that have numerous applications in daily life. In this study, the chemical composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ultrastructure and biological activity of the Mediterranean endemic species Cheaerophyllum coloratum L. are investigated, as literature data for this plant species are generally very scarce. The essential oil and hydrosol were extracted from the air-dried leaves by hydrodistillation and the chemical composition of both extracts was analysed by GC–MS in conjunction with headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) of VOCs from the hydrosol and the fresh plant material. In the composition of the essential oil, the oxygenated sesquiterpenes spathulenol and caryophyllene oxide were the most abundant components. In the fresh plant material, non-oxygenated sesquiterpenes dominated, with β-caryophyllene and germacrene D being the main components. The hydrosol was dominated by monoterpenes, with the oxygenated monoterpene p-cymen-8-ol being the most abundant. Light and electron micrographs of the leaf of C. coloratum show secretory structures, and we hypothesize that glandular leaf trichomes, secretory epidermal cells and secretory canals are involved in the production of volatiles and their secretion on the leaf surface. Since the biological potential of C. coloratum is poorly investigated, we tested its cytotoxic activity on cancer and healthy cell lines and its antiviral activity on plants infected with tobacco mosiac virus (TMV). Our results dealing with the composition, ultrastructure and biological activity show that C. coloratum represent a hidden valuable plant species with a potential for future research.

Innovative Method of Biomass Combustion in the Binary Fluidised Bed

Abstract In this study, a binary fluidised bed made out of quartz sand and cenospheres for the biomass combustion process was created. Materials were fluidised with air to achieve a vertical density profile (from 0.5 g/cm³ to 1.1 g/cm³) resulting from grains segregation. The density profile was selected to ensure optimal control over the location of the combusted fuel particle. This involved positioning the process as close to the bottom sieve as possible. Fluidised bed combustion was carried out at temperatures of 600 °C, 700 °C, 820 °C and 870 °C using straw, willow and sawmill pellets as fuels. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of flue gases was performed using an FTIR spectrometer. Over 90 % carbon conversion from the biomass to carbon dioxide was achieved at 700 °C. At 820 °C and 870 °C, 100 % of biomass carbon left the reactor as CO2. The composition of organic compounds in the process products remained low, reaching a maximum of 3.0 % wt. at 600 °C. To gain further insights into the processes occurring in the immediate vicinity of biomass samples, a complementary TGA/FTIR analysis was conducted. This aimed to clarify the impact of the biomass particle decomposition stage in the fluidised bed combustion process. The proposed mechanism for biomass combustion in the binary fluidised bed contains the particle decomposition stage and the subsequent stage resulting from the coalescence of bubbles containing flammable components and bubbles containing oxidiser.

The Effect of Phytogenic Additive in Broiler's Diet on Production Results, Physicochemical Parameters, and the Composition of Volatile Organic Compounds of Broiler Meat Assessed by an Electronic Nose System.

The primary objective of this study was to investigate the impact of a phytogenic additive (PA) in broiler chickens' diet on production, physiochemical parameters, and the profile of volatile organic compounds present in broiler chickens' meat. The experiment was conducted in a commercial chicken house, where Ross 308 broiler chickens were divided into two groups, each consisting of 65,000 broilers. One group was fed a diet supplemented with 100 ppm of PA throughout the rearing period. The primary chemical composition of the meat and its physicochemical parameters were determined. A visual assessment of breast muscles for defects and volatile organic compounds were evaluated using an electronic nose system. No statistically significant differences were shown in the production performance of the chickens; while summarizing all production parameters, a higher EPEF index of 31 points in the experimental group was highlighted. Breast muscle quality showed differences in drip loss and WHC (p ≤ 0.01) in favor of the experimental group, and a lower cutting force value (p ≤ 0.05) was found for breast muscles from the experimental group. The group also had a lower proportion of muscles with a white striping defect, and the results of volatile organic compound profiling showed the most aroma units.

Water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) from atmospheric aerosols in Bou-Ismail (Algeria).

In this contribution, we report the study of nuclear resonance magnetic spectroscopy techniques (1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and 2D-NMR) efficiency in the characterisation of the functional composition of water-soluble organic compounds (WSOC) from atmospheric aerosols. The chosen site was our scientific and technical center of research (CRAPC) situated in Algerian Bou-Ismail city. where the concentrations of PM10 were found to be between 15.66 and 142.19µg.m-3. As results, 1H-NMR analysis showed the coexistence of biological material and emissions from urban and biomass burning. The dominant source was identified by quantitative integration of each 1H NMR spectral region. By using the HSQC technique, many peaks are revealed in biogenic samples including biomass burning. On the other hand, the identification of the source of various organic compounds and their functional composition is possible through specific NMR spectra, which can also be used to adjust the surrounding organic aerosol sources.

The Combined Analysis of GC-IMS and GC-MS Reveals the Differences in Volatile Flavor Compounds between Yak and Cattle-Yak Meat.

In order to investigate the composition and differences in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in yak and cattle-yak meat and determine the key metabolites and metabolic pathways related to flavor formation. In this study, the VOCs and non-volatile metabolites in Longissimus dorsi muscle of two groups of samples were detected and analyzed by gas chromatography-ion migration spectrometry (GC-IMS) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results showed that 31 VOCs were identified by GC-IMS, including 5 alcohols, 5 ketones, 5 esters, 3 aldehydes, 2 furans, 2 hydrocarbons, 1 amine, 1 acid, 1 thiazole, 1 pyrazine, and 5 others. Most of them were alcohols, ketones, esters, and aldehydes. A total of 75 non-volatile metabolites with significant differences were obtained by GC-MS screening, among which amino acid contents such as serine, glycine, phenylalanine, and aspartic acid were significantly up-regulated in cattle-yak, and glutamic acid and tyrosine were significantly up-regulated in yak. The non-volatile differential metabolites in the two groups were significantly enriched in the metabolic pathways of arginine biosynthesis and oxidative phosphorylation. By combining GC-IMS and GC-MS, this study comprehensively and intuitively reflected the differences in VOCs between yak and cattle-yak meat, and clarified the metabolomic reasons for the differences in VOCs, so as to provide a theoretical basis for meat quality improvement.

Divergence of Phyllosphere Microbial Community Assemblies and Components of Volatile Organic Compounds between the Invasive Sphagneticola trilobata, the Native Sphagneticola calendulacea and Their Hybrids, and Its Implications for Invasiveness.

Closely-related plant groups with distinct microbiomes, chemistries and ecological characteristics represent tractable models to explore mechanisms shaping species spread, competitive dynamics and community assembly at the interface of native and introduced ranges. We investigated phyllosphere microbial communities, volatile organic compound (VOC) compositions, and potential interactions among introduced S. trilobata, native S. calendulacea and their hybrid in South China. S. trilobata exhibited higher α diversity but significantly different community composition compared to the native and hybrid groups. However, S. calendulacea and the hybrid shared certain microbial taxa, suggesting potential gene flow or co-existence. The potent antimicrobial VOC profile of S. trilobata, including unique compounds like p-cymene (13.33%), likely contributes to its invasion success. The hybrid's intermediate microbial and VOC profiles suggest possible consequences for species distribution, genetic exchange, and community assembly in heterogeneous environments. This hybrid deserves further study as both an opportunity for and threat to diversity maintenance. These differentiating yet connected plant groups provide insight into ecological and evolutionary dynamics shaping microbiome structure, species co-occurrence and competitive outcomes during biological exchange and habitat transformation. An interdisciplinary approach combining chemical and microbial ecology may reveal mechanisms underlying community stability and change, informing management of species spread in a globalized world.

Exploratory Study on Distinguishing Dendrobium Stem and Five Species of Dendrobium Using Heracles Neo Ultra-Fast Gas Phase Electronic Nose

Dendrobium stem is a valuable food with medicinal and edible properties. Due to its high medicinal value and price, closely related Dendrobium varieties are often sold as imitations on the market. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop new methods that can quickly identify Dendrobium stem and its closely related species. The Heracles Neo ultra-fast gas phase electronic nose was used in this study to determine and analyze the composition and contents of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in Dendrobium stem and samples of five other species closely related to it. A total of 20 VOCs were identified, and a fingerprint map of the VOCs was constructed. Principal component analysis (PCA), Euclidean distance, and other methods were used to comprehensively process and analyze the obtained VOC information. The AroChemBase database was also used for qualitative analysis of the compounds. The results showed that there are significant differences in the odor fingerprint spectra of Dendrobium stem and the five other closely related species. The main types of compounds in Dendrobium stem and its five closely related species were organic esters, aldehydes, ketones, and olefins. Among them, 3-methylbutanal and n-butanol were characteristic compounds of the Dendrobium stem sample, while the VOCs acetonitrile and trometamol were present in the five related Dendrobium species samples. The Heracles Neo ultra-fast gas phase electronic nose can quickly and accurately identify Dendrobium stem and its five closely related species. It can also be used for the quality evaluation of Dendrobium stem, providing a theoretical reference for reducing the phenomenon of medicinal confusion in the Dendrobium stem market.

Chemical Composition of Volatile and Extractive Organic Compounds in the Inflorescence Litter of Five Species of Woody Plants.

The decomposition of plant litter, most of which is found in forests, is an important element of the global carbon cycle, as a result of which carbon enters the atmosphere in the form of not only CO2 but also volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Although the formation of litter is associated with autumn cooling, in the spring, there is a very intense fall of faded inflorescences of woody plants. This study examined the chemical composition of the litter and VOCs emitted from decaying inflorescences of four species of forest-forming trees: silver birch, European hornbeam, black alder and aspen. All litter emissions consisted of 291 VOCs, mainly terpenes actively participating in atmospheric processes. The detection of a number of typical mushroom metabolites, such as 1-octen-3-ol, known as "mushroom alcohol", and alkyl sulphides, suggests that inflorescence-derived VOCs are a mixture of components of plant and microbial origin. In methanol extracts of the fallen inflorescences of all types, 263 organic compounds were identified, the majority of which were related to carbohydrates. Their share in the extracts was 72-76%. In general, the composition of the extractive compounds indicates the easy availability of this material for assimilation by various types of destructors.

Impact of saliva incorporation on the rheological properties of in vitro gastric contents formulated from sour cream.

Rheological properties of gastric contents depend on the food ingested, and on the volume and composition of secretions from the host, which may vary. This study investigates the impact of saliva regular incorporation in the stomach after a meal on the rheological properties of gastric contents, considering two levels of salivary flow (low = 0.5 and high = 1.5 mL/min). In vitro chymes were obtained by mixing sour cream, simulated gastric fluid, two different volumes of oral fluid (at-rest human saliva, SSF for Simulated Salivary Fluid or water) and adjusting pH at 3. Chymes samples were characterized at 37°C for their particle size and rheological properties. Overall, particle size distribution was not different between samples: incorporating a larger volume of saliva resulted in more heterogeneity, but the surface area moment D[3,2] and volume moment D[4,3] did not differ significantly with the oral fluid type. Shear viscosity of chyme samples was higher when saliva was incorporated, in comparison with water or SSF. In addition, as shown from data extracted at = 20 s-1 the higher the fluid volume the lower the shear viscosity, which is attributed to a dilution effect. However, this dilution effect was attenuated in the case of saliva, most likely due to its composition in organic compounds (e.g., mucins) contributing to the rheological properties of this biological fluid. In these in vitro conditions, both saliva and the salivation rate had a significant but slight impact on the rheological properties of gastric contents (of the order of 1-5 mPa s at = 20 s-1).

Measurement of volatile organic compounds using tethered balloons in a polluted industrial site in Catalonia (Spain).

Understanding the chemical composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) near emission sources and in the background atmosphere above the mixing layer height (MLH) provides insight into the fate of VOCs and is essential for developing effective air pollution control strategies. Unfortunately, knowledge of the qualitative and quantitative changes of VOCs and their vertical transport in the atmosphere is limited due to challenging experimental setups. In this study, an innovative method using tethered balloons was tested and implemented to sample 40 VOCs and O3 below and above the MLH at an industrial site in Spain. VOC and O3 samples were collected with different types of sorbent cartridges and analyzed using chromatographic techniques. Overall, a decrease in VOC concentration with altitude was observed along with a homogeneous chemical composition up to 300 m AGL. This decrease with altitude denoted the primary origin of these VOCs, which were strongly influenced by industrial processes and the traffic emissions in the area. Conversely, O3 concentrations were notably higher at balloon level and increased during nighttime temperature inversion episodes in those samples collected above the mixing layer. Ground samples contained freshly emitted pollutants of industrial origin, while balloon samples consisted of aged pollutants from traffic, other combustion sources, or from a secondary origin. This study is the first to assess the vertical composition of VOCs at a site of these characteristics and demonstrates that tethered balloons are a cost-effective method for studying air pollution dynamics from the ground to higher altitudes in the low troposphere.

Gas-phase reaction of CH4 and H2S – Evidence from pyrolysis experiments and case study from the Sichuan Basin

The application of routine geochemical analyses for identification of dry natural gas sources and post generation processes poses a challenge as its hydrocarbon composition is typically dominated by CH4 (∼≥99 %) while the presence of non-hydrocarbons may be limited. In particular, the possibility of dry gas interaction with H2S at reservoir conditions (low temperatures, high pressures, millions of years residence time) is not established as previous studies of this reaction focused on conditions typical for industrial reactors (high temperature, ambient pressure, residence time of seconds). To address these issues, we studied the molecular and isotopic (δ34S) composition of volatile organic sulfur compounds (VOSC) formed during pyrolysis experiments between CH4 and H2S at 360 °C (4–96 h), reaching %Ro equivalent of 0.80–1.25 which represents thermally mature oil and gas reservoirs. The results demonstrated that methanethiol (MeSH) is the main product of the reaction, while its δ34S value suggest equilibrium isotopic effect with its parent H2S. Subsequent analysis of the molecular and isotopic (δ13C, δ2H, δ34S) composition of thermogenic, H2S containing, dry natural gases from the Jiannan gas field in China revealed the presence of short thiols and sulfides dominated by MeSH. The δ34S of the VOSC identified suggests they all formed by gas-phase reaction of alkanes (mainly CH4) with the associated H2S.This study demonstrates the applicability of VOSC as a proxy for identification of interaction between H2S and dry gas and identification of H2S sources within a gas reservoir or a basin.

Composition and Transformation of Halogenated Products Contained in Drinking Water Transported through the Urban Water Distribution Network

Analysis of the composition and transformation of organic compounds in water obtained at a surface water intake of a large urban agglomeration (by the example of the city of Ufa) and used to arrange water supply for the population and the industrial sector has been carried out. Using gas and liquid chromatography with various types of detection, more than 250 organic compounds in the supplied water have been determined. It has been revealed that when transporting water, the concentration of organic compounds of technogenic nature (phthalates, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, alkylbenzenes, etc.) does not change. It has been concluded that in remote, dead-end and stagnant zones of the urban water distribution network, the presence of additional organic pollutants not identified in drinking water leaving water treatment facilities, has not been detected.

Sources of organic gases and aerosol particles and their roles in nighttime particle growth at a rural forested site in southwest Germany

Abstract. The composition, sources and chemical transformation of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and organic aerosol (OA) particles were investigated during July–August 2021 at a rural forested site in southwest Germany, 10 km north of the city of Karlsruhe. VOCs and semi-volatile OA particles were measured with a proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometer coupled to the CHemical Analysis of aeRosols ONline particle inlet (CHARON–PTR-MS). The CHARON-measured OA mass accounted for 62 ± 18 % on average of the total OA mass (4.2 ± 2.8 µg m−3) measured concurrently with an aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS). The total concentrations of measured VOCs ranged from 7.6 to 88.9 ppb with an average of 31.2 ± 13.4 ppb. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) was used to identify major source factors of VOCs and OA particles. Three types of oxygenated VOC (OVOC), namely aromatic OVOCs, biogenic OVOCs and aged OVOCs, contributed on average 11 % ± 9 %, 37 % ± 29 % and 29 % ± 21 % of total VOC concentrations, respectively. The results of AMS–PMF indicated substantial contributions of oxygenated organic compounds to OA particle mass. Three secondary OA (SOA) factors determined by CHARON–PMF analysis, namely aromatic SOA (5 % ± 7 %), daytime biogenic SOA (17 % ± 17 %) and nighttime biogenic SOA (28 % ± 21 %), consistently showed high contributions to the total CHARON-measured OA mass. Nighttime particle growth was observed regularly in this area, which was mainly attributed to the semi-volatile organic compounds and organic nitrates formed from the oxidation of monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. This study presents the major sources, real-time transformations of VOCs and OA particles, and nighttime particle formation characteristics for central European forested areas.

Characterizing the composition of volatile compounds in different types of Chinese bacon using GC–MS, E-nose, and GC–IMS

Chinese bacon is highly esteemed by consumers worldwide due to its unique aroma. The composition of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) varies significantly among different types of Chinese bacon. This study analyzed the VOCs of Chinese bacon from Sichuan, Hunan, Guangxi, and Shaanxi provinces using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), an electronic nose (E-nose), and gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC–IMS). The results demonstrate that the combination of GC–MS and GC–IMS effectively distinguishes Chinese bacon from different regions. Notably, Guangxi bacon lacks a smoky aroma, which sets it apart from the other types. However, it contains many esters that play a crucial role in its flavor profile. In contrast, phenols, including guaiacol, which is typical in smoked bacon, were present in the bacon from Sichuan, Hunan, and Shaanxi but were absent in Guangxi bacon. Furthermore, Hunan bacon exhibited a higher aldehyde content than Sichuan bacon. 2-methyl-propanol and 3-methyl-butanol were identified as characteristic flavor compounds of Zhenba bacon. This study provides a theoretical foundation for understanding and identifying the flavor profiles of Chinese bacon. Using various analytical techniques to investigate the flavor compounds is essential for effectively distinguishing bacon from different regions.

CHROMATOMASS SPECTROMETRIC STUDY OF LEAVES OF RUBUS IDAEUS L. AND SORBUS AUCUPARIA L. SOUTH OF THE TOMSK REGION

The features of the distribution of fat-soluble organic compounds in the leaves of deciduous shrubs Rubus idaeus and Sorbus aucuparia growing in identical weather conditions in mixed and pine forests of the southern taiga of Western Siberia are shown. The composition of n-alkanes, saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, n-aldehydes, n-alkane-2-ones, n-alkanols, acyclic isoprenoids, steroids and pentacyclic triterpenoids was studied by chromatomass spectrometry. It was found that the microclimate of pine forest and mixed forest influences the composition of organic compounds in the leaves of single-species plants. In a mixed forest, among acyclic compounds, the total proportion of n-alkanes and the relative content of high-molecular homologues of n-alkanes, n-aldehydes and n-alkane-2-ones in rowan and raspberry leaves were increased. The composition of steroids is dominated by sitosterol, while in the bushes of mixed forest, unlike pine forest, there is a higher proportion of keto-substituted stigmast-4-en-3-one and the hydrocarbon stigmast-3,5-diene. Pine raspberries are distinguished by the presence of cholesterol, lanosterol and lanost-8-en-3-one, an increased content of cycloartenol. The leaves of ash among the pentacyclic triterpenoids identified a- and β-amerins, and the leaves of the raspberry a-, β- and d-amerins, among which in the pine forest increased the proportion a- amerin, and in the mixed forest – d-amerin. Raspberry leaves are dominated by neolup-12-en-3-ol, whereas in the leaves of mountain ash of mixed forest – lupeol, and pine forest – presumably 28-norneogop-18-en-3-ol. It is shown that the distribution of fat-soluble compounds depends not only on the type of plant, but also on the conditions of its growth, which must be taken into account when planning the practical use of plant raw materials.

Assessing the effect of COVID 19 lockdowns on the composition of organic compounds and potential source of PM2.5 in Hanoi, Vietnam.

The ambient air quality during COVID-19 lockdowns has been improved in many cities in the world. This study is to assess the changes in persistent organic pollutants in PM2.5 during the COVID-19 lockdown in Hanoi. Individual organic species in PM2.5 ((e.g., polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs), and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs)) were measured in an urban residential area in Hanoi from before the March 10th to April 22nd, 2020, including before the partial lockdown (BL) and the partial lockdown (PL) phases. During the PL phase, the concentration of Σ14PAHs and Σ28PCBs was reduced by 38 and 52% compared with the BL period, respectively. The diagnostic ratio method implied that the sources of PAHs within the PL phase had a less effect on traffic and industrial activities than in the BL phase. The characteristic ratio method indicated that PCBs were mixed by commercial product and combustion process in both the BL and the PL periods, however, the source of PCBs in the BL phase was influenced by municipal waste incineration more than those in the PL phase. The decreasing concentration of Σ20OCPs during the partial lockdown was attributed to the restriction of human activities during the quarantine period. The results suggested that the source of OCPs was probably derived from the usage of pesticides in current and, historical degradation or the transportation of pesticides from the soil to the atmosphere.
