Spirituality as a Protective Factor

Adults who were separated from parental care as children and resided in alternative care settings often experience difficulties throughout their lifespan. Thus, it is important to explore factors that lead to better outcomes. Spirituality is one protective factor that has received attention in academic literature in recent years. However, little work has examined spirituality in this population or the specific ways it impacts wellbeing in adulthood. Using thematic analysis, the current study explored the specific ways spirituality serves as a protective factor in a multinational sample of 267 individuals with care experience. Data revealed six spirituality-related themes: 1) relationship with God, 2) spiritual community support, 3) spirituality as a component of identity development, 4) a belief in a higher purpose, 5) spirituality-motivated servanthood, and 6) access to spirituality-based teachings and teachers. Based on these findings, we propose data-informed recommendations to improve services for children separated from parental care.

Applying an Allportian Trait Perspective to Sense of Purpose.

Sense of purpose captures the extent to which one feels that they have personally meaningful goals and directions guiding them through life. While this construct has illustrated its ability to robustly predict desirable outcomes-ranging from happiness to mortality-the nature of this construct remains unclear. I begin by describing different definitions and measures from the purpose literature. From there, I review the debates suggesting that it should be classified as a component of identity development, a facet of well-being, or even a virtue. In the current paper, I argue that sense of purpose could be best served when qualified as a trait, building from the eight components of defining a trait from Allport's (1931) paper: "What is a trait of personality?". Using this classic piece as a framework, I integrate empirical and theoretical work on purpose and personality to dive into whether sense of purpose is a trait. I conclude by discussing the challenges and implications of bolstering sense of purpose if it is best classified as a trait.

The Concept of Male and Masculinity, as for Adolescents Age 15-18, in the up Northern Region of Albanian Society, a Reflection of the Gender Culture in Albania

One specific component of identity development is gender identity, which refers to the development of a broad set of characteristics that distinguish between men and females and includes personal attributes, social roles, social customs, activities, and behaviors. It is though that during mid-adolescence gender is quite rigid and stereotyped. This study explored the perceptions of young male adolescents on gender roles, masculinity and stereotypes. The results confirmed that the male adolescents aged 15-18, are holders of rigid gender stereotyped roles which match perfectly with those of a masculine society as described by Hofstede (2001). Adolescents at this age (15-18) didn’t experienced gender identity crisis, as it might be generally thought.

THE ROLE OF DIMENSIONS OF IDENTITY DEVELOPMENT AND FIVE FACTORS OF PERSONALITY IN PREDICTING SUBJECTIVE WELL-BEING OF MEDICAL STUDENTS

Background and Objectives: Mental health and sense of wellbeing has-been the subject of many investigations. Identification and classification of mental health components as well as factors affecting them lead to better understanding of mental health and sense of wellbeing . This study aimed to investigate subjective wellbeing based on the five factors of personality and dimensions of identity development. Materials and methods : The correlational research method was used in this study. 200 students were selected from Semnan Medical University through cluster random sampling method. Neo questionnaire, dimensions of identity development questionnaire (DIDS) and subjective wellbeing questionnaire were used to collect data. Multivariate regression analysis, multivariate analysis of variance (ANOVA), and univariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) were used for data analysis. Findings: exploration in depth as a component of identity development, significantly predicted the positive affect. Exploration in depth and conscientiousness also predicted positive affect. There was no significant association between ruminative exploration and the negative affect. Among the five factors of personality, conscientiousness and extraversion significantly predicted positive affect while neuroticism was a significant predictor of negative affect. Conclusion: Exploration in depth and conscientiousness as the most important components of identity development were very effective in enhancing the subjective well-being. Conscientiousness and extroversion as the main components of personality also increased subjective wellbeing. Neuroticism was regarded as a threat to the subjective wellbeing.
