A STUDY ON ADVERTISEMENT EFFECTIVENESS ON BRAND IMAGE: A CASE STUDY ON HONDA MOTORS

In this study, we shall be investigating the types of advertising that Honda resorts to and the role that advertisements play in the establishment of customer opinions regarding the brand. The primary objectives of the study are threefold: However, I Start With the Important Elements of Honda such as H.O.N.D.A. and Ultimate Benefit. It can be viewed as a sign of how the ad campaigns of Honda help to create and keep a positive brand image. This means adopting advertising methods of different forms, but which are not so conspicuous, therefore, making customers notice them and finally, their reactions to them. First, the author investigates the efficiency of advertisements in the formation of a brand image with account taken of such factors as brand association, brand familiarisation, and personal customer relationship with the Honda car. The research outcome will likely be in line with the advertisement which could be employed with consumer perception as well as brand awareness. On the contrary, however, the outcome is associated highly with a brand that has been acknowledged positively. With this study, the final (decisive) instrument that is most responsible for the advertising effectiveness of Honda will be identified as well. Hence evaluating the performance of each part it will be possible to reach the best one and identify the determining feature that is the main reason for the positive image of Honda in the highly competitive automotive industry. The outcomes of this investigation would constitute a critical source of information that would be extremely beneficial to the marketing and brand managers of Honda, as they can now apply the aforementioned principles in their ads to improve their brand positioning and buyers' engagement level. SecFL – Secure Federated Learning Framework for predicting defects in sheet metal forming under variability

With the ongoing digitization of the manufacturing industry and the ability to bring together data from specific manufacturing processes, there is enormous potential to use machine learning (ML) techniques to improve such processes. In this context, the competitive automotive industry can take advantage of the ML power by predicting defects before they occur, aiming to reduce the scrap rate and increase the robustness and reliability of the production processes. In a real world scenario, small and medium size companies do not have the amount of data the big companies have, which can prevent the usage of ML models in this vital niche for the industry. A collaboration in terms of data usage to develop powerful and general industry solutions is hindered by data privacy concerns despite similar problems. This paper addresses these concerns by providing a framework based on the Federated Learning (FL) method combined with Digital Envelopes (DE) to allow the ML models training while keeping the data of the partners and the models parameters private and protected against external cyber-attacks, which is one of the weaknesses of FL as of now. A case study was carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework on handling data poisoning attacks to the training data and also the models’ weights.

Analysis of Energy Consumption and Performance of BEV, HEV and an ICEV: A Case Study of Real-Life Road Simulation

Supplying enough power and energy during vehicle operation is one of the key elements in competitive automotive industry. In other words, providing the feeling of smooth operation brings the vehicle a step further when compared to its competitors. So, the main goal behind this research is to examine vehicles with three different powertrain systems and observe their behavior over different drive cycles. Vehicle performances are analyzed under different categories such as consumption (i.e., electricity, fuel), economic perspective, and emission point of view. Since vehicle electrification is a hot topic in Turkey, researchers add a real-life road simulation of Istanbul-Adapazarı Road into perspective alongside regulative drive cycles to try and provide an insight of BEV and HEV behavior, in detail. All three vehicles are modeled on MATLAB/Simulink and the outcomes of simulations are presented in this study.

OTOMOTİV SEKTÖRÜNDE TÜRKİYE, POLONYA VE ÇEKYA’NIN REKABET GÜÇLERİNİN KARŞILAŞTIRILMASI

Bu çalışmada, Türkiye, Polonya ve Çekya’nın imalat sanayinde üretim ve ihracat bakımından nispi payları 2000 yılından itibaren giderek artan motorlu kara taşıtları sektöründeki küresel rekabet gücünün hesaplanması ve dönem içerisindeki değişmelerin karşılaştırılması amaçlanmaktadır. Çalışmada rekabet gücünün hesaplanmasında Balassa ve Vollrath tarafından geliştirilen iki farklı Açıklanmış Karşılaştırmalı Üstünlük (RCA) endeksi kullanılmıştır. Analizlerde 4 hane düzeyinde Harmonize Sınıflandırma (HS4) sistemine göre derlenen 2001-2019 dönemine ait dış ticaret verileri kullanılmıştır. Otomotiv sektörü için hesaplanan RCA2 endekslerinden, Polonya’nın 2004 yılından itibaren, Türkiye ve Çekya’nın 2001 yılından itibaren rekabet gücüne kavuştuğu, RCA1 endekslerinden ise Çekya’nın Türkiye ve Polonya’dan daha yüksek bir rekabet gücüne sahip olduğu görülmektedir. Ayrıca, otomotiv sektörünün 4 haneli ürün grupları için hesaplanan RCA1 endekslerinden, Türkiye’nin orta düzeyde teknolojik donanıma sahip iki ürünün (yolcu ve eşya taşımaya mahsus taşıtlar) ihracatında Polonya ve Çekya’dan daha yüksek bir rekabet gücüne sahip olduğu, Çekya’nın ise yüksek teknolojik donanıma sahip iki ürünün (binek otomobil ve bunların aksamı ve parçaları) ihracatında orta düzeyde, ancak diğer iki ülkeden daha yüksek bir rekabet gücüne sahip olduğu görülmektedir. Diğer taraftan RCA2 endekslerine bakıldığında, Türkiye’nin eşya taşımaya mahsus taşıtların ihracatında Polonya ve Çekya’dan daha yüksek bir rekabet gücüne sahip olduğu, Çekya’nın ise binek otomobil ihracatında Türkiye ve Polonya’dan daha yüksek bir rekabet gücüne sahip olduğu görülmektedir.

Development and Implementation of Remote Duty Cycle Data Acquisition and Analysis

In the competitive automotive industry, launch of a new vehicle has become a norm to stay ahead, also the vehicle manufacturers are competing in terms of increased warranty on the new launch. Hence it is imperative for rigorous validation of new vehicle in very short period and requires to map customer usage pattern in least possible time. This work is based on an extension of internet of things (IOT), which provides a tool of capturing vehicle duty cycle by using combination of analog and digital sensors with appropriate ADC. The system is enabled with algorithm/ coded to log result, whenever measured physical parameter goes above/below predetermined level. The work involves implementation of an auto start and auto shutdown of the system based on vehicle ignition. Thus, this paper presents a system that is capable of continuous, real time recording and edge computing (auto post processing) physical quantity and ensures complete elimination of human interface, thereby enabling Remote Data Acquisition, Analysis and Reporting system (Proposed system). The proposed system is fit and forget and cost-effective solution, it can be fitted in any number of vehicles to acquire data for large number of kilometers to map system level usage pattern. Against the conventional method with limited kilometers of data to map customer pattern. The present work is an implementation of Remote Data Acquisition, Analysis and Reporting system in measurement of required vehicle parameters of temperature and humidity in field working conditions.

Eco-innovation impacts on recycled product performance and competitiveness: Malaysian automotive industry

This study aims to develop a theoretical circular economy model that examines the impact of eco-innovation practices on recycled product performance and competitiveness in Malaysian automotive industry. The supply of recycled materials has been recognized as one of the critical components to produce brand new automotive products. This empirical study was conducted among automotive firms and groups consisting first, second, and third-tier suppliers. The data were analysed using structural equation modeling. The results support the importance of innovation and cost efficiency from the perspective of resource-based view and the ability of a firm to manage resources while practicing circular economy initiatives, whilst instrumental to the success of recycled product performance and competitiveness. The degree of competitiveness that a firm experiences through new product development is targeted by integrating the theory of resource-based view, eco-innovation, and circular economy. The findings reveal that eco-innovation practices with circular economy principles assist business competitiveness in the automotive industry.

UDC 338.242; JEL Classification: L 52 Purpose: development of the tesseract of competitiveness as a generator of the concept of sustainable development of the automotive industry. Methodology of research: method of analysis and synthesis, system approach, generalization method, graphic method. Findings: the tesseract of competitiveness as a generator of the concept of sustainable development of the automotive industry is developed. The facets of the internal cube of tesseract as elements of competitiveness of automotive industry are presented as a combination of elements of competitiveness of automotive products (“price”, “quality”, “range” and “service”) and elements of competitive potential of automakers (“production potential”, “human resources potential”, “managerial potential”, “innovation potential”, “financial potential”, “investment potential”, “market potential” and “strategic potential”). The vertices of the inner cube of the tesseract as the points of intersection of its faces are the points of the beginning of the lines that connect the inner and outer cubes of the tesseract and represent the tools for ensuring the competitiveness of the automotive enterprises. The points of end of these lines serve as the vertices of the outer cube of tesseract of competitiveness and form concepts (basic elements of the concept of sustainable development of the automotive industry) as the sides of the outer cube. Originality: the developed tesseract provides generation of concepts of sustainable development of the automotive industry in harmonization with conditions of competitiveness of automotive enterprises. Practical value: practical application of the tesseract of competitiveness allowed to generate the modern concepts of sustainable development of the automotive industry: franchise-dealer CRM-system; HR branding; hi-tech management; clustering; social responsibility; integration.

The evolution of dynamic interactions between the knowledge development of powertrain systems

Competition in the already highly competitive automotive industry intensified in the early 1990's. The ubiquitous internal combustion engine began to be challenged by the upstart alternatives of battery and hybrid electric vehicles, which has led to an intricate web of knowledge development. Our research aims to qualify and quantify the dynamic relationships that formed in the knowledge development of powertrains by adopting conceptual insights from evolutionary ecology. Specifically, the interdependent relationships observed in the Technological Innovation System (TIS) framework is similar to that between species such that powertrain systems can either support or inhibit the knowledge growth of one another over time. Our theoretical framework extends the economics of technical change within technologies vis-à-vis the concept of ‘positive and negative externalities’ and ‘knowledge development co-dynamics’. We use patents data extracted from Thomson Reuters' Derwent Innovations Index to measure the knowledge development in each technological field and apply the biological Lotka-Volterra (L-V) model to analyse the data across three separate time periods 1985–1996, 1997–2007, and 2008–2016. Our results show that the behaviour of the powertrain systems change over time as they have behaved as creative (or uncreative) and explorative (or exploitative). We also demonstrate that the powertrain systems go through temporal transitions where the relationship mode between them changes between amensalism, parasitism, commensalism, and symbiosis. In line with this we recommend that policy makers not only devise strategies (offensive or defensive) for each interaction modes but to also consider changing their strategies when there is transition between the modes. Furthermore, policy makers should consider the dual role of ‘creation’ and ‘destruction’ in their innovation policy mixes.

Digital aspects of development of the modern world vehicle market on the example of electric vehicles

Automobilization is one of key factors of development of developed and emerging countries’ economy, therefore existence of the created, competitive automotive industry is the most important prerequisite of successful social and economic development of subjects of the world economy. The present stage of development of world automotive industry in the conditions of digitalization indissolubly and everywhere is connected with implementation of new technologies and also with transformation of commodity structure of production in which the significant share belongs to vehicles of new type. The purpose of this article was the research of digital aspects of transformation of world automotive industry on the example of the market of electric vehicles. It was established, that exhaustion of natural resources and the high prices of primary energy sources lead to gradual replacement in the market of vehicles in favor of electric vehicles. The structure of the modern world market of electric vehicles, which segments have different dynamics of development has been presented in the article. The main advantages and shortcomings of electric vehicles have been revealed. The last are in many respects caused by unavailability of national economies to essentially new industry. It has been established, that intensive development of the world market of electric vehicles will depend in the long term on modification of strategy of the international manufacturing companies as a result of digitalization and a new wave of scientific and technical progress. It as been proved that the Asian market of electric vehicles will develop the advancing rates in comparison with other regional markets. Improvement of measures of the state support of the electromobile industry remains relevant aspect for all countries of the world. In Russia existence of natural restrictions both in the sphere of production, and in the sphere of consumption, slows down development of the market of electric vehicles, including its hybrid segment.

Impact of supply chain on the competitiveness of the automotive industry

Purpose There is a great reliance on fiscal incentives to sustain the automotive industry competitiveness due to several structural problems, among them the inefficiency of the supply chain. This paper aims to compare the supply chain structure of traditional automotive industry with the supply chains from South Korea and China. Based on strategic decision and transaction cost theory, this comparison seeks to exploit the factors that led to the inefficiency of automotive supply chains. Design/methodology/approach The authors used a qualitative approach and applied a multi-method research. They conducted semi-structured interviews with six executives from automakers representing the selected countries, carried individual meetings during one workshop and used secondary data from several sources. Findings Concepts identified in the research such as reliability, supply chain governance and automaker competencies led the authors to propose that the traditional automakers have higher transaction costs when compared to the new automakers due to the horizontal structure of their supply chain. While new competitors have vertical upstream supply chains, which indicates better profitability, traditional automotive industry is horizontal, depends on fewer Tier 1 suppliers and is disconnected from Tier 2, impacting negatively in the transaction costs and supply chain management. Practical implications This study suggests that automotive executives rethink the current upstream supply chain model by identifying the competencies required for their current and future competitiveness and implementing a vertical integration of these competencies. Originality/value This research exploited the inefficiency of supply chain as one of the explanations for the low competitiveness of the national automotive industry.

Using set-based design for developing a 3D metal forming process

Industry is continuously searching for solutions to increase flexibility and quality in parallel with cost reductions. This paper presents a case study of using set-based design method to develop a gripping system for an innovative three-dimensional bending and forming technology of extruded aluminium profiles. Traditionally, profiles are formed by mandrel-based stretch-bending to improve cross-sectional stability and spring-back, sometimes combined with subsequent calibration e.g. by hydroforming. However, in the highly competitive automotive industry, where light-weighting is high on the agenda, design and process flexibility, tooling cost and dimensional accuracy are important factors to increase value at a reasonable cost. In this paper, a set-based concurrent engineering approach is used to identify, evaluate and prioritize gripping methods to enable three-dimensional bending meeting automotive requirements for dimensional accuracy. The results demonstrate a multitude of options, providing trade-offs between flexibility and function. Further work will be to build a physical demonstrator to validate output from the set-based method used to systematically narrow down the solution space.

'Make in India' - A Boost to the Auto Component Industry

The Indian automotive component industry is small in size compared to the world market (INR 740,000 Crores). The industry has been experiencing a high growth rate of 27 % over the period 2001-06 and is expected to grow at a rate of 13 % over the period 2006-15. The quality of components made in India has improved significantly in the last decade and about 11 Indian auto component companies have won the Deming prize so far. India is estimated to have the potential to add up to US$30 Billion by FY 20-21 and to become one of the top five auto component economies by 2025.The industry currently accounts for almost 7% of India’s gross domestic product (GDP) and employs about 19 million people, both directly and indirectly. Phased Manufacturing Programme (PMP) for new projects in New Industrial Policy 1991 and for existing projects in 1994 has been abolished. This followed by Auto Policy 2002 enactment with a Vision: To establish a globally competitive automotive industry in India and to double its contribution to the economy by 2010. The ever-increasing development in infrastructure, big domestic market, increasing purchasing power and stable government framework have made India a favourable destination for investment, as per the vision of Automotive Mission Plan (AMP) 2006–2016.The growth of Indian Auto Component Industry in the little over first decade of the 21st Century is phenomenal. The Industry transformed gradually in stages from serving just Indian market – majority to replacement market - to global OEMs and replacement market(Velury Vijay). Many joint ventures have been set up in India with foreign collaboration. India ranks just behind China with the world’s second largest population at over 120 crore people. (Singh Amarjit et.al). Impact of Economic, Social and Environmental Variables on Competitiveness of Automotive Industry: Evidence from Panel Data

The study is aimed to examine the impact of economic, social and environmental factors on the competitiveness of automotive industry. Competitiveness of industry is measured by the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) Index. Fixed effect model is estimated by using the data of 14 Asian countries for the period ranging from 1991 to 2012. Results show that competitiveness of automotive industry is positively related to economic performance, human capital development, urbanization and tariff rate while negatively affected by lending rate and carbon emission both in developed and developing nations of Asia. Findings of the study suggest that external factors should be given due consideration particularly lending rate, human capital development and tariff to improve the competitiveness of automotive industry. Automotive policies in developing countries should improve their human capital and encourage foreign investors with adequate protection to local industry.

THE PROBLEMS OF BRINGING RUSSIAN TRADE POLICY IN LINE WITH WTO REQUIREMENTS

The article analyzes the role of trade policy in ensuring the competitiveness of the automotive industry – one of the most sensitive to the changes of economic conditions and important for providing national economic security – and finding a balance between the need to regulate the internal market and the implementation of the commitments under WTO. The analyze of the current condition of the Russian automotive industry has shown that, despite the low share in the world production and exports, Russia has a great potential for growth, mainly due to the unsaturated domestic market. It is proved, that the development of the automotive industry as one of the innovative industries in the country has all the necessary terms. Moreover, the priority areas for the development of the automotive industry include, first of all, the creation of a full range production with foreign investment. Measures of attracting and regulating FDI received much attention due to their relationship with the instruments of trade policy, as the production of capital goods, particularly automobiles, require imports of components, and FDI, in turn, promote the export of finished products. The commitments taken by Russia in the automotive industry include reduction of duties on imported cars, the renegotiation of investment programs and rules for the functioning of special economic zones. At present, the most acute question is car recycling tax, which has led to a trade dispute with the European Union, and may lead to countervailing measures against Russian goods. Considering WTO rules, recommendations on the use of the most effective instruments of foreign policy, aimed at improving the competitiveness of the Russian automotive industry, were made, including the rationalization of import and the attraction of new technologies due to the diversification of customs duties on certain groups of automotive components, lowering income taxes, a gradual decrease of the fiscal functions of the customs tariff; the stability and transparency of the instruments of trade policy and simplification of customs procedures.

A decision support methodology to enhance the competitiveness of the Turkish automotive industry

Three levels of competitiveness affect the success of business enterprises in a globally competitive environment: the competitiveness of the company, the competitiveness of the industry in which the company operates and the competitiveness of the country where the business is located. This study analyses the competitiveness of the automotive industry in association with the national competitiveness perspective using a methodology based on Bayesian Causal Networks. First, we structure the competitiveness problem of the automotive industry through a synthesis of expert knowledge in the light of the World Economic Forum’s competitiveness indicators. Second, we model the relationships among the variables identified in the problem structuring stage and analyse these relationships using a Bayesian Causal Network. Third, we develop policy suggestions under various scenarios to enhance the national competitive advantages of the automotive industry. We present an analysis of the Turkish automotive industry as a case study. It is possible to generalise the policy suggestions developed for the case of Turkish automotive industry to the automotive industries in other developing countries where country and industry competitiveness levels are similar to those of Turkey.

Effect of SEBS on morphology, thermal, and mechanical properties of PP/organoclay nanocomposites

A simultaneously increase in stiffness and toughness is needed for improving polypropylene (PP) competitiveness in automotive industry. The aim of this paper is to investigate the effects of styrene-(ethylene-co-butylene)-styrene triblock copolymer (SEBS) on mechanical and thermal properties of PP, in the presence and the absence of nanoclay. The amount of SEBS in PP was ranged to obtain the matrix with the most favorable stiffness–toughness balance. For this purpose, SEBS domain size and distribution in PP/SEBS blends was determined by means of atomic force microscopy and correlated with mechanical properties. The influence of SEBS on the crystalline structure of PP in PP/organoclay nanocomposites was investigated by X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry, a synergistic effect of SEBS and nanoclay being pointed out. Moreover large improvement in the impact strength (almost 22 times) was obtained in the case of SEBS-containing nanocomposite in comparison with the composite without SEBS.

The lifetime prediction of a rotary screw compressor of a liquid cooler subjected to high pressure and high frequency loads

The estimation of the lifetime of high pressure and high frequency loaded components by testing is very costly and time-consuming. The simulation of fatigue life is an important design step in the fast moving and competitive automotive industry, where the steady rise of engineering components and the demand for lightweight construction concurred with enhanced reliability require an optimized dimensioning process. The paper presents the chosen problems of 3D numerical strength and fatigue simulation of a rotary screw compressor of a liquid cooler. The presented results of the FEM mechanical calculation based on a real components. The fatigue analysis were executed using the criterion of critical plane. Local multi-axial state of stresses and deformation has been calculated based on Hooke’s law with simultaneous consideration of kinematics hardening rule of material according to Jiang’s model.

Vehicles for innovation and learning: the case of a neglected concept car project

AbstractIn the competitive automotive industry product development processes are increasingly structured, leaving little room for learning and hence developing the knowledge needed for creating the innovative new products that are essential in order for automotive companies to remain competitive in the long run. Previous studies underline the importance of explicitly managing innovation and knowledge creation in order to successfully develop innovative products. It is our contention that the concept car constitutes an important arena for learning and creating useful knowledge in the automotive industry. This paper presents a detailed analysis of a concept car project at Volvo Cars (the YCC project), tracing how it was used from a learning perspective. Based on this longitudinal study, this paper argues that there is a need to manage more explicitly the learning opportunities provided by concept car projects in order to leverage on the knowledge created. It also discusses some of the barriers to learning that are illustrated by the case study. Finally the paper suggests further research directed towards innovative activities, such as concept cars in order to better understand the nature of their interface with established NPD processes. Lifetime simulation of thermo-mechanically loaded components

The estimation of the lifetime of thermo-mechanically loaded components by testing is very costly and time-consuming, since the high temperature cycle time in practical application dominates the test duration. Common frequencies for TMF (thermo-mechanical fatigue) tests are at about 0.01 Hz compared to 10–100 Hz at HCF (high cycle fatigue) and about 0.1–1 Hz at isothermal LCF (low cycle fatigue) tests. Therefore, the simulation of fatigue life is an important design step in the fast moving and competitive automotive industry, where the steady rise of engine power and the demand for lightweight construction concurrent with enhanced reliability require an optimised dimensioning process. Methods and models are usually derived from results made on tests with specimens, since it is possible to systematically and exactly define loading parameters and measurement categories. After an extensive test programme (tensile tests, creep tests, low cycle fatigue tests and thermo-mechanical fatigue tests with different influences on specimens) it was possible to develop material models for the simulation of the time- and temperature dependent stress–strain hystereses and damage models for the simulation of the TMF lifetime. Based on this knowledge the whole simulation chain to determine the TMF life of a component is introduced: thermal calculation, mechanical calculation and lifetime calculation. Furthermore the transferability of specimen based simulation models to real components (an alternative test piece and a cylinder head) is investigated.
