Arthropod Community Structure of Jaja Creek and Downstream Sections of Imo River in Uta Ewa Village, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Arthropods are considered the most successful animals on earth. They are an essential part of the aquatic food chain and efficient bioindicators depicting the biotic community structure and water quality. This study aimed to generate baseline data on the arthropod community structure of Jaja Creek and downstream sections of Imo River in Uta Ewa village, Ikot-Abasi Local Government Area, Akwa-Ibom State, Nigeria. A variety of sampling techniques, including the scoop net method at low tides in the littoral zone, square lift net anchored on a paddling boat, sweep net, and locally made crab traps were adopted for the sampling of the arthropods. Fourty-six arthropod species were identified and classified into three classes: Arachnida, Crustaceans, and Insecta, with nine orders and twenty-six families. Sesarma alberti, Aratus pisonii, Sesarma elegans, Armases sp, Neosarmatium meinerti, Nematopalaemon sp, and Macrobrachium caledonicum were among the various arthropod species identified in this study. The class Crustaceans had the highest individual abundance of 135,809 (94.74%), followed by the class Insecta, which had a total numerical individual abundance of 7,339 (5.12%), and the order Arachnida (206; 0.14%). For the first time, members of the class Insecta and the families Sesarmidae, Pilumnidae, and Penaeidae (Penaeus sp.) were collected and identified in this portion of the Niger Delta Creek and Imo River. Given the importance of aquatic arthropod species to the catchment region and the country, a comprehensive conservation strategy should be developed to conserve and defend their survival.

Food web interactions of two breeding Arctic shorebird species, little stint Calidris minuta and red knot Calidris canutus, are shaped by their elevational distribution

Birds often have to choose their nest site location along a food safety axis, balancing nest predation danger with the food requirements of themselves and their offspring. This is probably most important for precocial species, such as most shorebirds, in which both chicks and parents need access to food resources in the surroundings of the nest, at least during the first days of life of the chicks. In many Arctic ecosystems, shorebird nests are typically prone to predation by both avian and terrestrial predators, especially in lemming-poor years. Among other factors, the strength of the trophic interactions between shorebirds, their prey, and their predators depend on how all of these are distributed across space. During two breeding seasons in northern Taimyr, North-Central Russia, we investigated how the spatial distribution of red knot Calidris canutus and little stint Calidris minuta nests and broods overlaps with the local food landscape and also with the distribution of avian predators and their main prey, lemmings. We found that the two shorebird species use different habitats that vary in arthropod community structure in accordance with the birds’ diet: while little stints selected lower elevations where chironomid midges Chironomidae are more abundant, red knots selected higher elevations where crane flies Tipulidae are more abundant. Furthermore, little stints share low-elevation habitats with lemmings and predators, while red knots inhabit higher elevations averted by both lemmings and avian predators. We found higher nest predation for little stint nests than for red knots nests, especially in a low-lemming year. Our results thus support the idea that food web interactions are driven by landscape and community aspects.

Arthropod diversity in the alpine tundra using metabarcoding: Spatial and temporal differences in alpha- and beta-diversity.

All ecosystems face ecological challenges in this century. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important to understand the ecology and degree of local adaptation of functionally important Arctic-alpine biomes by looking at the most diverse taxon of metazoans: the Arthropoda. This is the first study to utilize metabarcoding in the Alpine tundra, providing insights into the effects of micro-environmental parameters on alpha- and beta-diversity of arthropods in such unique environments. To characterize arthropod diversity, pitfall traps were set at three middle-alpine sampling sites in the Scandinavian mountain range in Norway during the snow-free season in 2015. A metabarcoding approach was then used to determine the small-scale biodiversity patterns of arthropods in the Alpine tundra. All DNA was extracted directly from the preservative EtOH from 27 pitfall traps. In order to identify the controlling environmental conditions, all sampling locations were equipped with automatic data loggers for permanent measurement of the microenvironmental conditions. The variables measured were: air temperature [°C] at 15 cm height, soil temperature [°C] at 15 cm depth, and soil moisture [vol.%] at 15 cm depth. A total of 233 Arthropoda OTUs were identified. The number of unique OTUs found per sampling location (ridge, south-facing slope, and depression) was generally higher than the OTUs shared between the sampling locations, demonstrating that niche features greatly impact arthropod community structure. Our findings emphasize the fine-scale heterogeneity of arctic-alpine ecosystems and provide evidence for trait-based and niche-driven adaptation. The spatial and temporal differences in arthropod diversity were best explained by soil moisture and soil temperature at the respective locations. Furthermore, our results show that arthropod diversity is underestimated in alpine-tundra ecosystems using classical approaches and highlight the importance of integrating long-term functional environmental data and modern taxonomic techniques into biodiversity research to expand our ecological understanding of fine- and meso-scale biogeographical patterns.

Sown Covers Enhance the Diversity and Abundance of Ground-Dwelling Predators in Mediterranean Pear Orchards

Intensive agriculture has a strong impact on the structure of arthropod communities in soil. Sown covers can contribute to their conservation, especially for generalist predators such as spiders and predatory beetles. The aim of this research was to assess the effect of cover crop management on the abundance and diversity of ground-dwelling arthropods. For this purpose, a three-year experiment was conducted in a pear orchard that was divided into three blocks with two plots each: one with a sown cover of mixed plants from different families, including Boraginaceae, Asteraceae, Apiaceae, Brassicaceae, and Fabaceae, and the other with no cover, in which any spontaneous plants were periodically removed without using herbicides. The abundance of ground-dwelling arthropods was sampled using pitfall traps. The sown cover increased the overall richness of arthropods. Additionally, spiders from the families Lycosidae and Linyphiidae, as well as beetles from the families Carabidae and Staphylinidae, were more abundant in the sown cover. Conversely, detritivores such as collembolans and beetles from the family Tenebrionidae were less abundant in the cover. The abundance of ants was not affected by the type of cover. The sown cover increased the diversity of arthropods in the crop, as well as the abundance of generalist predators.

Comparison of Soil Arthropod Diversity and Community Structure in Various Types of Land Cover in Malang Region, East Java, Indonesia

Land cover heterogeneity can affect the structure of biodiversity in the supplied niche, so it is necessary to know the taxa community. This study aimed to understand the effect of land cover variation on the diversity and community structure of soil arthropods. The types of habitats used include urban areas, agroforestry, gardens, and natural forests which are determined in the Malang Region, East Java, Indonesia. Hand sorting and hay bait traps were applied in this study to obtain a variety of arthropod soils and the Berlese-Tullgren funnel was used to extract them. As a result, there are 25 families from 15 orders collected based on their ecological roles. The abundance of Philoscidae in sites S1 and S2 (urban green space), Talitridae in site S6 (agroforestry), and Isotomidae in sites S3, S4, and S5 (highland mixed forest) was highest and dominant. Site S7 has the highest diversity (H' = 2.56; 1-D = 0.90; J' = 0.76) even though its family richness is lower. The site S3 counter-site had relatively high taxa richness (TR = 13), but low diversity (H' = 1.02; 1-D = 0.39; J' = 0.16). Based on clustering analysis and NMDS ordination, 3 classifications of habitat types were obtained, namely I (S6 & S7), II (S3, S4 & S5), and III (S1 & S2). Mixed forest habitats contain a more complex diversity of soil arthropods, which can serve as a model for improving the fertility of disturbed ecosystems.

Effects of yak and Tibetan sheep grazing on soil arthropods community in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China.

We investigated the responses of community structure of soil arthropods to yak and Tibetan sheep grazing based on a manipulated grazing experiment at the alpine meadow livestock Adaptive Management Platform, which locates in Haiyan County, Qinghai Province. The results showed that the obtained soil arthropods belonged to 26 families, 8 orders, and 4 classes, with Acaroidae and Oribatida as the dominant groups. Yak and Tibetan sheep grazing decreased the abundance but increased Shannon index, Margalef index and Pielou index of soil arthropods. Yak grazing significantly increased the quantity of the predatory soil arthropod groups. Yak and Tibetan sheep gra-zing significantly increased the quantity of the detritivore soil arthropod groups, but did not affect the quantity of the omnivorous and phytophagous soil arthropod groups. Yak and Tibetan sheep grazing significantly reduced the abundance of soil mites. Soil bulk density, available potassium, and available nitrogen were the main abiotic factors affecting soil arthropods community composition.

Effects of dominant ant species on ant community structure and ant–hemipteran interactions

Ants often interact aggressively for resources (e.g. nest sites and food) with members of their own or another species. In these competitive interactions, dominant ant species exert a strong influence on ant species coexistence and plant‐associated arthropod community structure. However, few studies have experimentally manipulated the relative abundance of dominant ant species on plants, preventing a mechanistic understanding of the effects of ant competitive interactions on ant community structure as well as on their interactions with other insects, particularly mutualistic hemipterans. In this study, we performed a field experiment in a tropical dry forest in Brazil to investigate the effects of two dominant ant species (Camponotus crassus and Cephalotes pusillus) on the structure ant communities and the abundance of the ant‐tended hemipteran Enchenopa brasiliensis in Solanum lycocarpum plants. For this, we identified and quantified all ant species foraging on plants and estimated the number of egg masses, nymphs and adults of the mutualistic hemipteran before and after experimentally removing nests of both two dominant ant species. Our results showed that removal of C. pusillus nests significantly changed ant community structure, whereas removal of C. crassus nests did not. We also found that nest removal of both dominant ant species had significant effects on hemipteran abundance. In particular, plants generally hosted more hemipteran eggs, nymphs and adults after (vs before) nest removal of both dominant ant species. Overall, this study demonstrates that dominant ant species can play a pivotal role in structuring ant communities and the interactions between ants and honeydew‐producing hemipteran insects.

Ecosystem engineering and leaf quality together affect arthropod community structure and diversity on white oak (Quercus alba L.)

Shelter building caterpillars act as ecosystem engineers by creating and maintaining leaf shelters, which are then colonized by other arthropods. Foliage quality has been shown to influence initial colonization by shelter-building caterpillars. However, the effects of plant quality on the interactions between ecosystem engineers and their communities have yet to be studied at the whole plant level. We examined how leaf tying caterpillars, as ecosystem engineers, impact arthropod communities on Quercus alba (white oak), and the modifying effect of foliage quality on these interactions. We removed all leaf tying caterpillars and leaf ties on 35 Q. alba saplings during the season when leaf tying caterpillars were active (June–September), and compared these leaf tie removal trees to 35 control trees whose leaf ties were left intact. Removal of these ecosystem engineers had no impact on overall arthropod species richness, but reduced species diversity, and overall arthropod abundance and that of most guilds, and changed the structure of the arthropod community as the season progressed. There was an increase in plant-level species richness with increasing number of leaf ties, consistent with Habitat Diversity Hypothesis. In turn, total arthropod density, and that of both leaf tying caterpillars and free-feeding caterpillars were affected by foliar tannin and nitrogen concentrations, and leaf water content. The engineering effect was greatest on low quality plants, consistent with the Stress-Gradient Hypothesis. Our results demonstrate that interactions between ecosystem engineering and plant quality together determine community structure of arthropods on Q. alba in Missouri.

Consistent imprints of elevation, soil temperature and moisture on plant and arthropod communities across two subarctic landscapes

Abstract Factors shaping arthropod and plant community structure at fine spatial scales are poorly understood. This includes microclimate, which likely plays a large role in shaping local community patterns, especially in heterogeneous landscapes characterised by high microclimatic variability in space and in time. We explored differences in local microclimatic conditions and regional species pools in two subarctic regions: Kilpisjärvi in north‐west Finland and Varanger in north‐east Norway. We then investigated the relationship between fine‐scale climatic variation and local community characteristics (species richness and abundance) among plants and arthropods, differentiating the latter into two groups: flying and ground‐dwelling arthropods collected by Malaise and pitfall traps, respectively. Arthropod taxa were identified through DNA metabarcoding. Finally, we examined if plant richness can be used to predict patterns in arthropod communities. Variation in soil temperature, moisture and snow depth proved similar between regions, despite differences in absolute elevation. For each group of organisms, we found that about half of the species were shared between Kilpisjärvi and Varanger, with a quarter unique to each region. Plants and arthropods responded largely to the same drivers. The richness and abundance of both groups decreased as elevation increased and were positively correlated with higher soil moisture and temperature values. Plant species richness was a poor predictor of local arthropod richness, in particular for ground‐dwelling arthropods. Our results reveal how microclimatic variation within each region carves pronounced, yet consistent patterns in local community richness and abundance out of a joint species pool.

Acaricide exposure impairs predatory behavior of the phytoseiid mite Neoseiulus idaeus (Acari: Phytoseiidae).

Predation is an important interaction that can change the structure of arthropod communities across both temporal and spatial scales. In agricultural systems predation can reduce the population levels of several arthropod pest species of a community. This predator-prey interaction involves the predator searching and handling behaviors. Several factors can affect this interaction, such as pesticide exposure, which is a frequent feature in agroecosystems. Thus, the hypothesis of our study is that the predatory behavior of the phytoseiid mite Neoseiulus idaeus Denmark & Muma, an important natural enemy of spider mites, is affected by acaricide exposure. To test that hypothesis, the predatory mite was exposed to the acaricides abamectin, fenpyroximate, and azadirachtin in 4 exposure scenarios. The predatory behavior of N. idaeus was negatively affected by acaricide exposure when the leaf surface containing both prey and predator was sprayed leading to a reduction in the frequency of transitions between predator walking and meeting preys. Prey handling and consumption were also compromised by acaricide exposure through contaminated leaf surface and prey, and contaminated leaf surface, prey, and predator. Abamectin compromised predation regardless of the exposure scenario. Acaricide-exposure reduced the number of prey found, number of attacks, and number prey killed by N. idaeus. Moreover, partial prey consumption was observed with acaricide-exposed mites. Thus, caution is necessary while attempting to integrate acaricide applications and mass release of N. idaeus for spider mite management.

Linking agricultural diversification practices, soil arthropod communities and soil health

Abstract Soil arthropods comprise a substantial portion of soil biodiversity and regulate processes in the soil ecosystem. Despite this, cropping system diversification designed to improve soil health for agriculture is rarely evaluated for its effects on soil arthropod biodiversity and community structure. As a result, soil arthropods are not usually considered in management decisions. To address this gap, we evaluated the effects of agricultural diversification through rotation on soil arthropods and soil properties using replicated large‐plot field studies representing two climatically distinct agroecological classes (AECs) in the dryland cereal‐growing region of the inland Pacific Northwest, USA. We investigated how different 3‐year annual crop rotations affected soil arthropod biodiversity and community structure. Treatments reflected ‘business‐as‐usual’ rotations in dryland systems and diversified rotations achieved by incorporating novel winter pea (WP) or forage crops (FORs). We also assessed relationships between the Soil Biological Quality index (QBS‐ar), which uses soil arthropods as bioindicators of soil health, and other biological and physiochemical soil health indicators. We collected 710 community samples with 82,509 arthropod specimens across 66 taxa. Novel crops in diversified rotations promoted soil arthropod abundance and biodiversity relative to crops they could replace in rotation. Crop type determined community composition. Most taxa driving differences in community structure were predators and detritivores associated with WP and FORs. In addition to effects on soil arthropods associated with specific crops, effects were also detected across rotations. Incorporating WP into rotations improved QBS‐ar across entire rotations, not just in the WP phases, in both AECs. Links between QBS‐ar and other soil health indicators were complex and varied by AEC. Synthesis and applications: Soil arthropods respond to agricultural diversification and can be used as bioindicators to assess the effects of diversification on soil health. Below‐ground arthropod communities are structured by crop type, suggesting that planting specific crops may promote soil arthropods and their services. We showed that incorporating winter pea and forage crops into dryland cereal rotations supported soil arthropod biodiversity and soil health. Results indicate that soil arthropod assessments can be included in the soil health framework to guide agricultural management decisions.

Assessing the Impact of Insect Decline in Islands: Exploring the Diversity and Community Patterns of Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Arthropods in the Azores Native Forest over 10 Years

The ongoing decline of insect populations highlight the need for long-term ecological monitoring. As part of the “SLAM—Long Term Ecological Study of the Impacts of Climate Change on the Natural Forests of Azores” project, we investigated changes in arthropod diversity and community structure over a ten-year period (2012–2022) in the native forest of the island of Terceira (Azores). Focused on two arthropod assemblages (indigenous and non-indigenous species) monitored with SLAM traps, we asked if there was a distinguishable pattern in the diversity and structure of the studied arthropod subsets in a pristine island native forest. Species richness remained relatively constant. Endemic arthropods dominated and remained stable over time, indicating the forest’s ecological stability. In contrast, the assemblage of native non-endemic arthropods underwent changes, including increased hyperdominance and decreased biomass. The introduced arthropod assemblage showed more erratic dynamics driven by species turnover. Results suggested that temporal variation in each subset may be due to different ecological processes and that niche filtering may limit the establishment and spread of introduced arthropods. This research contributes to our understanding of the temporal dynamics of arthropods in native island forests and highlights the need for ongoing conservation efforts to protect these fragile ecosystems.

Arthropod Community Structure Indicating Soil Quality Recovery in the Organic Agroecosystem of Mount Ciremai National Park’s Buffer Zone

<a name="_Hlk128052096"></a><a name="_Hlk128036424"></a><span lang="EN-US">The</span><span lang="EN-US"> Mount Ciremai National Park (TNGC) buffer zone is designed to support conservation efforts. However, agriculture in this area is dominated by conventional farming that excessively uses synthetic fertilizers, which threatens soil quality. Introducing an organic fertilizer and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) is expected to enhance soil quality recovery in this area. This study aimed to analyze the differences in soil arthropod communities between organic and conventional agriculture and a forest in the TNGC buffer zone to assess soil quality improvement generated by the application of the organic fertilizer and PGPR. Soil arthropods were collected with Berlese-Tullgren funnels and pitfall traps. Several associated environmental parameters, including soil pH, C-organic, temperature, and moisture, were also measured. Data were analyzed using ecological indices (i.e., richness, diversity, evenness, dominance, similarity) and soil biological quality (QBS-ar). Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) was performed to examine the relation of arthropods with environmental parameters. In total, 957 individuals of soil arthropods belonging to four classes and 15 orders were recorded. Berlese-Tullgren and pitfall traps resulted in a similar tendency in most variables, with higher richness, diversity, and evenness values in the forest, followed by organic and conventional habitats. In addition, similarity and QBS-ar indicated that forest and organic communities were more similar than conventional community. C-organic, soil moisture and pH were considered the most deciding environmental parameters for arthropod assemblages. All measured variables in this study illustrated better soil quality in organic than in conventional agriculture. This study implicates the benefit of utilizing organic fertilizers and PGPR for soil quality restoration in agroecosystems.</span>

Within-field crop diversity and landscape complexity decrease the abundance of fall armyworm larvae in maize cropping systems

The composition and spatial arrangement of multiple crop and non-crop habitats at a field and landscape levels have the potential to modify the abundance and structure of arthropod communities. In particular, semi-natural habitats can provide important life support functions to a range of natural enemies of agricultural pests. How such traits might affect generalist predators has poorly been considered in complex landscapes dominated by intercropping and trees within a mosaic of small-scale agricultural plots in Africa. The objective of the present study was to test the hypothesis that crop diversity and landscape complexity in maize cropping systems decrease the abundance of crop pests through natural regulation by generalist predators. For this purpose, we monitored the fall armyworm abundance and predation of sentinel larvae by predatory ants across a set of maize fields with contrasted within-field crop diversity and abundance of semi-natural vegetation including trees and shrubs in their surrounding landscape. A negative effect of crop diversity and landscape complexity on FAW abundance, and a species-specific effect on ant abundance, were observed. However, no significant effect of ant abundance or predation on FAW abundance was observed, suggesting that habitat complexity by itself or other natural enemy communities such as parasitoids could play a complementary role to explain FAW abundance in maize crops.

Urban soil quality deteriorates even with low heavy metal levels: An arthropod-based multi-indices approach.

Urban-induced habitat conversion drastically changes soil life in a variety of ways. Soil sealing, human disturbance, habitat fragmentation, industrial and vehicular pollution are the main causes of urban soil degradation. Soil arthropods, as one of the most abundant and diverse group of soil fauna, are involved in many soil processes that are of great importance in maintaining soil health and multifunctionality. Nevertheless, soil quality is still mainly characterized by physical, chemical, and microbiological parameters. Here, we assessed and compared the biological soil quality in woody (REF: reference forest, REM: remnant forest) and nonwoody (TURF: public turfgrass, and RUD: ruderal habitat) types of urban green spaces along a disturbance and management intensity gradient in the Budapest metropolitan area (Hungary), using community metrics and soil arthropod-based indicators. Vegetation cover and landscape characteristics of study sites were quantified through vegetation and urbanization indices, respectively. Basic soil properties, total and bioavailable concentrations of the main heavy metals (Cd, Co, Hg, Ni, Zn) were also measured. Acari, Collembola, and Hymenoptera (mainly Formicidae) were the most abundant groups. Litter-dweller taxa, particularly Protura, proved to be the most sensitive to urban disturbance. Representatives of Hemiptera, Diptera, Symphyla, and Pauropoda were common in low densities. The taxonomic diversity of soil arthropod assemblages in nonwoody and woody habitats was similar. Although the integrated faunal indices showed no differences among soil habitat types, they provided different responses and, consequently, different information. Our findings demonstrated that the biological quality and arthropod community structure of soils were strongly impacted by soil C/N and heavy metal contamination. We found that low and moderate levels of pollution have adverse effects on edaphic fauna, suggesting biological degradation of soils, even below pollution limits. Nevertheless, more disturbed urban green spaces have been shown to play a significant role in maintaining belowground biodiversity, thereby soil functions.

Trophic Structure of the Soil-Dwelling Arthropod Communities at the Border of the Forest and the Steppe in the South of Western Siberia: Isotopic Data

Epigeic generalist predators play a crucial role in terrestrial ecosystems, connecting aboveground and belowground food webs. Using stable isotope compositions (δ13C and δ15N values), we assessed the trophic niches of the two main groups of generalist predators (ground beetles (Coleoptera, Carabidae) and spiders (Arachnida: Aranei)), as well as their potential prey (phytophagous and saprophagous insects), plants, and soils in the forest, steppe, and transitional ecosystems located in the forest–steppe of southwestern Siberia. We hypothesized that (1) the trophic niche of carabids is wider than that of spiders, because some ground beetles are omnivorous, and (2) the contribution of invertebrates from the detrital food web (saprophages) to the diet of generalist predators is higher in the “detrital” forest ecosystem than in the steppe, which should be reflected in increased δ13C and δ15N values of the predators in the forest. In total, 16 species of carabid and 17 species of spider were analyzed. The δ15N values of ground beetles suggested a wide range of trophic niches corresponding to two or three trophic levels. Omnivorous carabids of the genera Amara and Harpalus had the minimum δ15N values. The carbon isotope compositions of the ground beetles suggests that most predatory species were predominantly involved in grazing food chains. Spiders had on average increased δ15N values compared to ground beetles, and a relatively narrow range of δ15N values. The isotopic niche occupied by spiders hardly overlapped with the isotopic niche of carabids, which may indicate a significant difference in the range of consumed resources. Thus, our data suggest a significant difference in the trophic niches of the key generalist predators, ground beetles and spiders, which was observed both in the forest and the steppe habitats. Spiders appear to be more closely associated with detrital food webs than ground beetles. Contrary to our expectations, we did not find higher δ13C and δ15N values in ground-dwelling generalist predators in the forest compared to the steppe ecosystem.

Consequences of arthropod community structure for an at-risk insectivorous bird.

Global declines in bird and arthropod abundance highlights the importance of understanding the role of food limitation and arthropod community composition for the performance of insectivorous birds. In this study, we link data on nestling diet, arthropod availability and nesting performance for the Coastal Cactus Wren (Campylorhynchus brunneicapillus sandiegensis), an at-risk insectivorous bird native to coastal southern California and Baja Mexico. We used DNA metabarcoding to characterize nestling diets and monitored 8 bird territories over two years to assess the relationship between arthropod and vegetation community composition and bird reproductive success. We document a discordance between consumed prey and arthropod biomass within nesting territories, in which Diptera and Lepidoptera were the most frequently consumed prey taxa but were relatively rare in the environment. In contrast other Orders (e.g., Hemiptera, Hymenoptera)were abundant in the environment but were absent from nestling diets. Accordingly, variation in bird reproductive success among territories was positively related to the relative abundance of Lepidoptera (but not Diptera), which were most abundant on 2 shrub species (Eriogonum fasciculatum, Sambucus nigra) of the 9 habitat elements characterized (8 dominant plant species and bare ground). Bird reproductive success was in turn negatively related to two invasive arthropods whose abundance was not associated with preferred bird prey, but instead possibly acted through harassment (Linepithema humile; Argentine ants) and parasite transmission or low nutritional quality (Armadillidium vulgare; "pill-bug"). These results demonstrate how multiple aspects of arthropod community structure can influence bird performance through complementary mechanisms, and the importance of managing for arthropods in bird conservation efforts.

Effects of trunk injection with emamectin benzoate on arthropod diversity.

Pine wood nematode is a major plant quarantine object in the world. Trunk injection is an effective method for controlling pests that cause disease. To evaluate the ecological safety of trunk injection with emamectin benzoates in forests of Pinus massoniana, the community diversity and community composition of soil arthropods and flying insects (Hymenoptera) were studied at different stages of trunk injection. The dominant taxonomic groups of soil arthropods were Collembola (30.80%), Insecta (26.42%), and Arachnida (23.84%). The taxonomic groups of flying insects (Hymenoptera) were Ichneumonidae (48.94%), Formicidae (14.10%), and Braconidae (8.44%). Trunk injection with emamectin benzoate has no significant effect on the community diversity indices of total soil arthropods and flying insects (Hymenoptera). However, it has a significant effect on the community diversity indices of detritivores for soil arthropods. It changed the community composition of soil arthropods but did not impact the community composition of flying insects (Hymenoptera). Redundancy analysis of arthropod community structure and environmental variables showed that total potassium, residual of green leaf, and residual of litter leaf have a significant impact on the community structure of soil arthropods, and total phosphorus, total nitrogen, water content, organic matter, and total potassium have a significant impact on the community structure of flying insects (Hymenoptera). Trunk injection with emamectin benzoate is safe for the ecological environment. This study provides a new insight into the field for the prevention and control of pine wood nematode disease, which is of great significance to forest management and pest control. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Increasing prevalence of severe fires change the structure of arthropod communities: Evidence from a meta‐analysis

Abstract Animal ecology and evolution are shaped by environmental perturbations, which are undergoing unprecedented alterations due to climate change. Fire is one such perturbation that causes significant disruption by causing mortality and altering habitats and resources for animals. Fire regimes are changing on a global scale, but the effects of these changes on animal communities are poorly understood. Arthropods are one of the most ubiquitous and diverse animal taxa on the planet and their populations are sensitive to environmental change. Given their wide‐ranging impacts on ecosystem functioning, a better understanding of arthropod responses to changing fire regimes is critical and may also provide more general insights into how other groups might respond to fire. Here, we provide a comprehensive meta‐analytical assessment of how fire influences the arthropod community across habitats and functional groups. Using data from 130 peer‐reviewed papers across the globe, we tested how a variety of fire characteristics, including management regime, severity and time‐since‐fire affect arthropod populations and communities across habitats. Our results show that arthropod communities display substantial variation in response to fire and that community‐level responses are most likely to be detected within the first year. Responses also vary depending on fire characteristics and habitat. Specifically, while community metrics such as diversity were increased by low severity fires, they were reduced by high severity fires. Likewise, evenness increased after prescribed burns but was reduced after wildfire. Measures of arthropod community structure decreased following fires in deserts and forests. Across the entire arthropod community, fire also had variable effects on community diversity. Fire tended to have a negative effect size on arthropods across life stages, but responses did vary among groups. Nearly all functional groups exhibited a negative response to fire with the exception of herbivores, for which abundance, diversity and richness increased after fire. Our results suggest that the increasing prevalence of high‐severity wildfires are changing the structure of arthropod communities. Given their ubiquitous presence and diverse roles in terrestrial ecosystems, these community changes are likely to affect ecosystem functioning in various ways, including through increased herbivory. Differences in arthropod communities between grazed areas and grazing exclosures depend on arthropod groups and vegetation types

Livestock grazing is one of the most common management practices for grasslands and can greatly affect their biodiversity. However, arthropod diversity response patterns to grazing regimes are difficult to predict. We conducted a short-term grazing exclusion experiment in traditionally managed alkali grasslands in Hungary to investigate differences between grazed and ungrazed vegetation for different arthropod groups. The experiment was laid out in a full factorial design, with twelve 50 × 100 m short-term grazing exclosures in vegetation types with high (alkali wet meadow) and low productivity (alkali steppe). We sampled ground beetles and spiders with pitfall traps and true hoppers by sweep netting. We used vegetation type (wet meadow vs dry steppe), management (grazed vs ungrazed) and their interaction as fixed effects in mixed models. We found higher species richness and activity density of spiders and ground beetles in the more productive wet meadow vegetation, where the community structure of each arthropod group also shifted toward hygrophilous species. Significant interactions between vegetation type and management indicated a dependence of management effects on vegetation types: arthropod community structure shifted towards hygrophilous species in ungrazed meadows, but not in ungrazed steppe sites. True hopper abundance was higher in grazed meadow sites, but lower in grazed steppe sites, compared to ungrazed sites. True hopper community structure shifted toward generalist herbivores in ungrazed sites, regardless of vegetation type. We concluded that vegetation types determine arthropod communities and modulate the effects of grazing on arthropods. Our results suggest that moderate disturbance from low-intensity grazing has a positive or neutral effect in wetter, more productive vegetation, but a negative or neutral effect in drier, less productive vegetation, depending on the arthropod group. Herbivorous insects that dwell on plants are particularly affected by management because they are more susceptible to direct impacts, such as unintentional predation by grazing cattle, and because of asymmetrical competition between mammalian and insect herbivores.
