Improving cooperation between Hospital and the Community Mental Health Services of Nicosia

Abstract In order to accelerate psychiatric reform in Cyprus we took advantage of JA Implemental during the pilot implementation of Belgium best practices on facilitating the transfer of mental patients from mental hospital to the community mental health services. A multidisciplinary network has been organized between Athalassa Mental Hospital, that is the only mental hospital in the Republic of Cyprus performing 700 patients admissions yearly, and the Community Services of sector 1 and sector 2 of Nicosia Community Mental Services. The network meets regularly in order to facilitate therapeutic culture change in the direction of increasing the percentage of hospital patients that are motivated and prepared to be voluntarily moved for care by the community multidisciplinary teams. This is going to facilitate discharges from hospital, decrease duration of hospitalizations, decrease the frequency of hospitalizations and revolving door readmissions. This increased cooperation is being built on the basis of administrational procedures and clinical protocols that are based on multidisciplinary consensus. The evaluation starts multidisciplinarily in the hospital. A liaison community mental nurse takes part I the evaluation and motivation of the patients before the discharge from the hospital. A written informed consent process takes place in the hospital for the voluntary admission in the community mental health care setting. Also an effort is being made for early written referrals and appointments for community psychiatrist, psychologist, social worker and occupational therapist. This pilot action plan is going to increase cooperation of the mental hospital with the community mental health services, to decrease stigmatization and reform therapeutic culture to the direction of treatment in the community and recovery approach, according to Belgium best practices included in the JA Implemental project.

Online group-based internal family systems treatment for posttraumatic stress disorder: Feasibility and acceptability of the program for alleviating and resolving trauma and stress.

Demand for trauma-focused therapy continues to increase, especially in community mental health care settings where group treatment models can be cost-effective and increase access to care. The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) may offer an effective therapeutic approach. The purpose of this proof-of-concept study was to evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of a novel, trauma-focused, group-based treatment approach and investigate potential mechanisms of action. Study participants completed the Program for Alleviating and Resolving Trauma and Stress (PARTS), an online-delivered program including 16 weeks of 90-min IFS-based groups with eight 50-min individual IFS counseling sessions. Participants completed assessments including clinician-administered and self-report measures of PTSD, common comorbid conditions (e.g., complex PTSD [disturbances in self-organization], depression, anxiety, and suicidality), and potential mechanisms (e.g., decentering, self-compassion, and emotion regulation). Most participants (n = 11/15; 73%) attended 12+ group sessions, with 92% (12/13 responders) reporting they would recommend PARTS to a friend. All respondents reported the program was helpful (13/13; 100%). PTSD symptom severity was reduced from baseline to Weeks 16 (d = -0.7, p = .005) and 24 (d = -0.9, p < .001). A clinically meaningful response (i.e., 10+ point reduction on the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders [5th ed.]) was demonstrated in 53% of participants (8/15) by Week 24. Decentering, self-compassion, and emotion regulation all improved (p < .05). PARTS was feasible and acceptable as a group-based, online intervention in an urban, public community health care system. While PARTS showed promise in reducing overall PTSD symptom severity, well-controlled efficacy research is needed. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved).

Exergaming (physically active video gaming) for mental health service users in a community mental health care setting: an ethnographic observational feasibility study

BackgroundPeople with severe and enduring mental illness experience health inequalities with premature mortality; lifestyle behaviours are known to be contributing factors with low levels of physical activity reported. Facilitating physical activity to help maintain or improve health for those who are disadvantaged is essential. Exergaming (gaming involving physical movement) is increasingly used to improve physical activity across the lifespan and for those with a range clinical conditions; this might offer a way to increase physical activity for those with severe mental illness. The aim of this study was to explore engagement of mental health service users with exergaming to increase physical activity in a community mental health care setting.MethodsAn ethnographic observational feasibility study was undertaken through participant observation and semi-structured interviews. A gaming console was made available for 2 days per week for 12 months in a community mental health setting. A reflexive thematic analysis was performed on the data.ResultsTwenty one mental health service users engaged with the intervention, with two thirds exergaming more than once. One participant completed the semi-structured interview. Key themes identified from the observational field notes were: support (peer and staff support); opportunity and accessibility; self-monitoring; and perceived benefits. Related themes that emerged from interview data were: benefits; motivators; barriers; and delivery of the intervention. Integrating these findings, we highlight social support; fun, enjoyment and confidence building; motivation and self-monitoring; and, accessibility and delivery in community mental health care context are key domains of interest for mental health care providers.ConclusionsWe provide evidence that exergaming engages people with SMI with physical activity. The value, acceptability and feasibility of open access exergaming in a community mental health service context is supported. Facilitating exergaming has the potential to increase physical activity for mental health service users leading to possible additional health benefits.

Low-Cost Virtual Reality to Support Imaginal Exposure Within PTSD Treatment: A Case Report Study Within a Community Mental Healthcare Setting

Revisiting what happened during (or after) a traumatic event is an important part of the treatment process in trauma-focused cognitive therapy (TF-CT). However, clinicians may have difficulty helping patients to intentionally retrieve these memories in order to engage with their content. As such, clinical tools to support the access and delivery of imaginal exposure content within treatment may prove to be particularly useful for therapists. This case report introduces work undertaken with Mr. A, a 38-year-old male, who 2 years prior had experienced a city centre assault. Initial assessment revealed a PCL-5 score of 64 and he met DSM-5 criteria for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Mr. A received 10 sessions of TF-CT wherein the traditional imaginal exposure components were implemented via a newly developed virtual reality (VR) development workflow called “VR Photoscan.” After 10 sessions, results showed PCL-5 scores decreased from 64 to 19 and Mr. A no longer met DSM-5 PTSD criteria. VR Photoscan was used during 4/10 sessions and included (1) reliving, (2) memory updating, and (3) stimulus discrimination activities. Mr. A also reported VR Photoscan as helpful regarding preparation for site visits. In conclusion, VR Photoscan technology provided a more visceral exposure experience which supported Mr. A to revisit the trauma memory. He reported high levels of satisfaction with the quality of the virtual environment and no issues using the VR technology. Produced with lower costs and shorter development times than typical computer-generated environments, VR Photoscan may be more easily implemented within routine care, although further research is required.

Evaluating and sustaining Coordinated Specialty Care for a recent onset of psychosis in non-academic-affiliated community mental healthcare settings

PurposeTo improve sustainability of Coordinated Specialty Care (CSC) for a recent onset of psychosis, a better understanding is needed regarding how non-academic-affiliated community mental health centers blend CSC service elements and select key performance metrics to evaluate their approach. MethodsA quality and evaluation team embedded within a large community mental health center partnered with CSC site leadership to implement CSC and design a program evaluation strategy informed by CSC research literature. Clinical, family, vocational, and psychiatry services participation, exits, key performance indicators, and standardized measures were examined for participants (n = 47) enrolled for 12-months. ResultsMean service participation was 55 h (SD = 23.5) in the first 12-months (approximately 4.70 h/month). All participated in clinical; 87% in psychiatry; 67% in vocational; and 57% in family services. Sixty-one percent had planned service exits; 39% had unplanned exits. Across the 12-months, 83% were employed or in school; 72% were not psychiatric hospitalized. ConclusionsCSC participation and outcomes were similar to the limited research examining both together. Understanding service participation and provider adjustments to sustain CSC is critical in community mental healthcare settings that rely on fee-for-service billing mechanisms. Findings have implications for national CSC data harmonization and sustainability efforts.

Sequential mixed method evaluation of the acceptability, feasibility, and appropriateness of cognitive behavioral therapy for psychosis stepped care

BackgroundCognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp) is recommended by national treatment guidelines yet remains widely inaccessible in the U.S. A stepped care model, favored and feasible for other scarce interventions, may improve access to CBTp.MethodsWe employed an exploratory sequential mixed method design inclusive of two distinct phases to quantitatively evaluate the acceptability, feasibility, and appropriateness of CBTp Stepped Care (CBTp-SC) among practitioners who were trained in low-intensity CBTp (Step 1), Group-Administered CBTp (Step 2), and Formulation-based CBTp (Step 3). In Phase 1, we queried respondents using the Acceptability of Intervention Measure, Intervention Appropriateness Measure, and the Feasibility of Intervention Measure to ascertain perceptions of these leading indicators of implementation success. In Phase 2, we conducted focus groups with CBTp-SC-trained practitioners (n = 10) and administrators (n = 2) from 2 of the 4 Phase 1 study sites to evaluate the theoretical assumptions of stepped care and to better understand key barriers and facilitators.ResultsForty-six practitioners trained in all three levels of CBTp-SC completed the online survey in Phase 1. All participants were employed by a community mental health agency currently sustaining CBTp-SC. Respondents endorsed high levels of acceptability, feasibility, and appropriateness for the CBTp-SC model. We found evidence to suggest that licensed practitioners and Step 3 practitioners perceived formulation-based CBTp as more appropriate for their clients. In Phase 2, six themes emerged which affirmed the utility of the model for stakeholders, supported stepped care theoretical assumptions, and revealed key areas for improvement.ConclusionsEarly adopters of CBTp-SC in the U.S. perceive it to be acceptable, feasible, and appropriate in community mental health care settings. Practitioners and administrators identified training and implementation barriers, including the importance of organizational readiness, a CBTp coordinator role, and a desire to adapt the intervention. These early findings will facilitate iterative refinement of the stepped care model for U.S. public behavioral health agencies. Additional research is needed to explore perceptions and clinical outcomes among CBTp service users.

Implementation of telemedicine consultations for people with mental health conditions in the community: a protocol for a systematic review.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic response has led to an exponential increase in the use and spread of telemedicine internationally. In community mental health care settings, telemedicine services were implemented within a few weeks, with little time for rigorous planning. Despite the reported acceptability of telemedicine by patients and clinicians, barriers to its implementation have come to light. There is now a need to investigate these barriers, and facilitators, as telemedicine begins to show potential promise beyond the pandemic. We propose a review that aims to identify the factors affecting the implementation of telemedicine consultations for patients with mental health conditions in the community. Methods: A systematic review will be conducted and reported according to the PRISMA guidelines. Five electronic databases will be searched using a pre-defined search strategy from 2016 to 2021. Only studies of synchronous, interactive telemedicine consultations conducted via video, phone or live messaging between patients and providers will be included. Quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods studies will be eligible for inclusion. Only studies published in the English language will be included. Titles and abstracts will be screened by two reviewers. Full text articles will be screened by two reviewers. The methodological quality of studies will be assessed using the Mixed Method Appraisal Tool (MMAT) by two reviewers. Data will be extracted and tabulated to address the aims of the review. A narrative synthesis will be conducted and reported factors will be mapped to the domains of the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Research (CFIR). Conclusion: By identifying the factors that influence the implementation of telemedicine consultations for patients with mental conditions in the community, consideration can be given to both barriers and facilitators that could be addressed in future mental health services planning. Addressing victimization to enable societal participation in flexible assertive community treatment: A process evaluation of the implementation of a new intervention.

BackgroundIndividuals with severe mental illness experience more victimization and discrimination than other persons in the community. Effective rehabilitation and recovery-oriented care interventions aimed at addressing this issue are lacking. We therefore developed a victimization-informed intervention (accompanied by a training module for professionals) called the Victoria intervention. The purpose of the present study was to understand the trial effects by examining the implementation process and the factors that influenced it.Materials and methodsA process evaluation was conducted using a mixed-methods design. During the professionals’ intervision sessions, we used observations to understand the learning processes (n = 25). Subsequently, we studied the use of the intervention in practice through structured questionnaires (n = 215) and semi-structured interviews (n = 34) with clients and professionals. We used descriptive and inferential statistics for the quantitative data and the framework method for the analyses of the qualitative data.ResultsThe observations showed that the trainings were well received. The professionals shared the urgency of paying attention to victimization and discrimination and its harmful effects on participation. They also found the intervention steps to be logical and the intervention protocol easy to use. Nevertheless, they mentioned in the interviews that they had experienced difficulties initiating a conversation about victimization, and if they started one, they did not always follow the steps of the intervention as intended. Few clients said that victimization was placed on the agenda, though those who had discussed victimization with their caregivers expressed their appreciation in the interviews; they felt acknowledged and supported.DiscussionThe findings indicate that the intervention was considered helpful in raising awareness and the acknowledgment of victimization. However, professionals remain reluctant to talk about the subject, and the results show they need more practical training in this regard. This process evaluation has an important added value in that it helps us to understand the results of the effect evaluation of the intervention. The findings will facilitate the development and implementation of interventions that address clients’ victimization experiences in community mental healthcare settings and subsequently enable their participation in society.

Implementing Chronic Care Model Treatments for Cigarette Dependence in Community Mental Health Clinics

Objective: Tobacco use is rarely addressed in community mental healthcare settings, despite its high prevalence among people with serious mental illness. The aim of the current study was to gather stakeholder feedback regarding the feasibility of chronic care management strategies for tobacco dependence in community mental health centers (CMHCs). Chronic care strategies evaluated included the 5 As (Ask about tobacco use, Advise users of tobacco to quit, Assess interest in cessation, Assist with cessation, and Arrange for follow-up) and proactive telephone outreach (reaching out to all users of tobacco to offer connection to tobacco cessation treatment). Methods: Using a semi-structured interview guide informed by the Practical Robust Implementation and Sustainability Model, we conducted individual semi-structured interviews with providers, leaders, and clients across two CMHCs. Our objectives were to capture their attitudes toward smoking cessation treatment, two chronic care model interventions (i.e., proactive outreach, the 5 As), and to determine the infrastructure needed to implement such interventions in their CMHCs. Thematic analysis was conducted by two independent coders to uncover pertinent themes. Results: Participants (n = 20) included nine providers, six leaders, and five clients. Thematic analysis revealed three major themes: (1) characteristics of recipients, (2) characteristics of the intervention, and (3) infrastructure needed for implementation and sustainability. Providers, leaders, and clients all reported that tobacco cessation treatment was rarely provided in CMHCs and expressed an interest in such treatments becoming more available. The 5 As and proactive outreach were viewed as feasible and acceptable to deliver and receive. Providers, leaders, and clients wanted support to connect clients with smoking cessation treatment. Providers and leaders requested a range of implementation supports, including didactic trainings, decision aids, performance feedback, and coaching on evidence-based tobacco cessation treatments for people with serious mental illness. Clients requested tobacco cessation resources, such as a cessation counseling provided at the CMHC and prescriptions for cessation medication. Conclusions: CMHC providers, leaders, and clients are interested in making tobacco cessation services more widely accessible and available. The feedback gathered in this study can be used to inform the delivery and implementation of guideline-adherent tobacco dependence care in CMHCs.

Prescribing of Psychiatric Drugs in Pregnancy: A Review of Current Practice in a Community Mental Healthcare Setting

AimsPrescribing of psychotropic medications in pregnancy is still considered a ‘grey area’ in clinical practice. National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in the UK suggests that the decisions should be person-specific, considering the risks to both the mother and unborn child, and the patient is supported to make an informed decision. It is important to explore the use of psychotropic medications during pregnancy, or lack of it, and its subsequent impact on maternal mental health. It was intended to review the decisions expectant mothers are making regarding taking psychiatric medications during pregnancy, and the associated clinical outcomes. Their mental capacity for taking decisions was also checked.MethodsA retrospective audit of case notes of patients (n = 16) known to community psychiatric team (CMHT) and specialist perinatal mental health (PNS) services in Wolverhampton, who notified their pregnancy between December 2020 and December 2021. Demographic and clinical data were collected from the electronic records.ResultsThe sample had a mean age of 28.8 ± 6.3 years (range: 19 to 39 years), and 68.8% of them were Caucasian. A wide range of psychiatric diagnoses were present, most (62.5%) had comorbid diagnoses; and 25% had substance use, most commonly cannabis. Mean duration of gestation at the review following notification of pregnancy was 14.5 ± 7.7 (range: 6 to 29) weeks. It was observed that 25% were not taking psychiatric medications prior to pregnancy, 43.8% stopped taking their medication prior to the psychiatric review, most stopping abruptly, and 31.2% had continued their medication. The medications included aripiprazole, olanzapine, quetiapine, venlafaxine, sertraline and promethazine. Following the review, only 18.8% continued their medications. Of the 13 (81.3%) patients who were not taking medications, 9 (69.2%) had adverse mental health outcomes, with 2 (15.4%) patients requiring inpatient care. However, later 8 (61.5%) started taking medications whilst under the care of PNS. All of them had mental capacity to decide regarding their psychiatric treatment at the review.ConclusionMost psychiatric patients avoided taking psychotropic medications initially during pregnancy, however, a considerable proportion restarted their medications following review with the perinatal psychiatry team. The majority of patients who did not take medications had negative mental health consequences. It is important to develop an evidence base about the use of psychiatric medications in pregnancy and the associated short and long-term outcomes that may help the quality of information shared with patients.

Measuring personal recovery in a low-intensity community mental healthcare setting: validation of the Dutch version of the individual recovery outcomes counter (I.ROC)

BackgroundMeasuring progress in treatment is essential for systematic evaluation by service users and their care providers. In low-intensity community mental healthcare, a questionnaire to measure progress in treatment should be aimed at personal recovery and should require little effort to complete.MethodsThe Individual Recovery Outcome Counter (I.ROC) was translated from English into Dutch, and psychometric evaluations were performed. Data were collected on personal recovery (Recovery Assessment Scale), quality of life (Manchester Short Assessment of Quality of Life), and symptoms of mental illness and social functioning (Outcome Questionnaire, OQ-45) for assessing the validity of the I.ROC. Test–retest reliability was evaluated by calculating the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient and internal consistency was evaluated by calculating Cronbach’s alpha. Exploratory factor analysis was performed to determine construct validity. To assess convergent validity, the I.ROC was compared to relevant questionnaires by calculating Pearson correlation coefficients. To evaluate discriminant validity, I.ROC scores of certain subgroups were compared using either a t-test or analysis of variance.ResultsThere were 764 participants in this study who mostly completed more than one I.ROC (total n = 2,863). The I.ROC aimed to measure the concept of personal recovery as a whole, which was confirmed by a factor analysis. The test–retest reliability was satisfactory (Intraclass Correlation Coefficient is 0.856), as were the internal consistency (Cronbachs Alpha is 0.921) and the convergent validity. Sensitivity to change was small, but comparable to that of the OQ-45.ConclusionsThe Dutch version of the I.ROC appears to have satisfactory psychometric properties to warrant its use in daily practice. Discriminant validity and sensitivity to change need further research.

COVID-19 Vaccination Rates in a Cohort Study of Patients With Mental Illness in Residential and Community Care.

Background: Patients with mental illness are at increased risk for COVID-19-related morbidity and mortality. Vaccination against COVID-19 is important to prevent or mitigate these negative consequences. However, concerns have been raised over vaccination rates in these patients.Methods: We retrospectively examined vaccine uptake in a large sample of Belgian patients admitted to or residing in a university psychiatric hospital or community mental health care setting between 29th of March 2021 and 30th of September 2021 in the Flanders Region. All patients were offered vaccination. Descriptive statistics were used to analyse the data. Logistic regression was used to examine factors associated with vaccine uptake.Results: 2,105 patients were included in the sample, of which 1,931 agreed to be vaccinated, corresponding with a total vaccination rate of 91.7%. Logistic regression showed an effect of the diagnosis “other disorders” (OR = 0.08, CI = 0.005–0.45), age (OR = 1.03, CI = 1.02–1.04) and residing in the psychosocial care center (OR = 0.50, CI = 0.32–0.80) on vaccination status.Conclusion: Vaccine uptake among people with mental illness is high and comparable to the general population, when implementing a targeted vaccination program.

Integration of Digital Tools Into Community Mental Health Care Settings That Serve Young People: Focus Group Study.

BackgroundDigital mental health tools have substantial potential to be easily integrated into people’s lives and fundamentally impact public health. Such tools can extend the reach and maximize the impact of mental health interventions. Before implementing digital tools in new settings, it is critical to understand what is important to organizations and individuals who will implement and use these tools. Given that young people are highly familiar with technology and many mental health concerns emerge in childhood and adolescence, it is especially crucial to understand how digital tools can be integrated into settings that serve young people.ObjectiveThis study aims to learn about considerations and perspectives of community behavioral health care providers on incorporating digital tools into their clinical care for children and adolescents.MethodsData were analyzed from 5 focus groups conducted with clinicians (n=37) who work with young people at a large community service organization in the United States. This organization provides care to more than 27,000 people annually, most of whom are of low socioeconomic status. The transcripts were coded using thematic analysis.ResultsClinicians first provided insight into the digital tools they were currently using in their treatment sessions with young people, such as web-based videos and mood-tracking apps. They explained that their main goals in using these tools were to help young people build skills, facilitate learning, and monitor symptoms. Benefits were expressed, such as engagement of adolescents in treatment, along with potential challenges (eg, accessibility and limited content) and developmental considerations (eg, digital devices getting taken away as punishment). Clinicians discussed their desire for a centralized digital platform that securely connects the clinician, young person, and caregivers. Finally, they offered several considerations for integrating digital tools into mental health care, such as setting up expectations with clients and the importance of human support.ConclusionsYoung people have unique considerations related to complex accessibility patterns and technology expectations that may not be observed when adults are the intended users of mental health technologies. Therefore, these findings provide critical insights to inform the development of future tools, specifically regarding connectivity, conditional restraints (eg, devices taken away as punishment and school restrictions), expectations of users from different generations, and the blended nature in which digital tools can support young people.

Young Adults and Their Families Living With Mental Illness: Evaluation of the Usefulness of Family-Centered Support Conversations in Community Mental Health care Settings.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of Family-Centered Support Conversations (FCSC) offered in community mental health care in Norway to young adults and their families experiencing mental illness. The FCSC is a family nursing intervention based on the Calgary Family Assessment and Intervention Models and the Illness Beliefs Model and is focused on how family members can be supportive to each other, how to identify strengths and resources of the family, and how to share and reflect on the experiences of everyday life together while living with mental illness. Interviews were conducted with young adults and their family members in Norway who had received the FCSC intervention and were analyzed using phenomenography. Two descriptive categories were identified: “Facilitating the sharing of reflections about everyday life” and “Possibility of change in everyday life.” The family nursing conversations about family structure and function in the context of mental illness allowed families to find new meanings and possibilities in everyday life. Health care professionals can play an important role in facilitating a safe environment for young adults and their families to talk openly about the experience of living with and managing mental illness.

Group acceptance and commitment therapy for patients and caregivers in psychosis services: Feasibility of training and a preliminary randomized controlled evaluation.

Psychological interventions reduce the impact of psychosis, but widescale implementation is problematic. We tested the feasibility of group acceptance and commitment therapy for Psychosis (G-ACTp), delivered by frontline staff, and co-facilitated by service-user experts-by-experience (SU-EbyE), for service-users and informal caregivers (ISRCTN: 68540929). We estimated recruitment/retention rates and outcome variability for future evaluation. Staff and SU-EbyE facilitators completed 1-day workshops, then delivered closely supervised G-ACTp, comprising four sessions (weeks 1-4) and two boosters (10 and 12weeks). Participants recruited from adult community psychosis services were randomized to receive G-ACTp immediately or after 12weeks, completing outcome assessments at 0, 4, and 12weeks. Service-use/month was calculated for 1-year pre-randomization, weeks 0-12, and 5-year uncontrolled follow-up. Of 41 facilitators trained (29 staff, 12 SU-EbyE), 29 (71%; 17 staff, 12 SU-EbyE) delivered 18 G-ACTp courses. Participant refusal rates were low (9% of service-users [10/112]; 5% of caregivers [4/79]); 60% of those invited to participate attended ≥1 G-ACTp session (64% of service-users [39/61]; 56% of caregivers [35/63]). Randomization of facilitators and participants proved problematic and participant follow-up was incomplete (78% [66/85]; 82% of service-users [36/44]; 73% of caregivers [30/41]). Effect sizes ranged from very small to large mostly favouring treatment. Service-use reductions require cautious interpretation, as very few participants incurred costs. Implementation appears feasible for service-users; for caregivers, retention needs improving. Outcome variability indicated n=100-300/arm followed up (α=0.05, 90% power). Methodological limitations' mean replication is needed: identified sources of potential bias may be reduced in a cluster randomized design with sessional outcome completion. Group acceptance and commitment therapy can be successfully adapted for people with psychosis and their caregivers. Implementation (training and delivery) is possible in routine community mental health care settings. Clinical and economic outcomes are promising, but replication is needed. Recommendations are made for future studies.

Assertiveness Training Therapy to Adolescence Development

During adolescent age, the teenagers are struggling for their self identity. The obstacle of teenagers to gain their self identity to some extent can be manifested through their deviant behaviors. The purpose of this scientific paper was to explore the result of Assertiveness Training to improve adolescence growth and development. Teenagers with a difficulty of being assertive were given Assertiveness Training. This was a quasi-experimental research, using pre-post without control group. A number of 16 samples were recruited using purposive sampling technique. The results of these interventions showed the improvement particularl on diferrent aspects and developmental task of teenagers, especially in emotion and psychosocial aspecs. Assertiveness Training was recommended that this report would be utilized as a standard of mental health-psychiatric nursing specialized treatment and to be socialized at all community mental health care settings.
