Community Education and General Elections: Strategies to Enhance Political Awareness Based on Technology & Community Participation Levels in Gorontalo Province

Community participation serves as a measure of success in conducting general elections, thus political participation must be optimized through building and developing political awareness among the populace through various efforts, including education and political advocacy based on information technology. This study aims to design a strategy to enhance technology-based political awareness and community participation levels in Gorontalo Province. The method employed in this study is qualitative, with data analysis utilizing the Miles and Huberman model. The study findings reveal that community political participation in local elections in Gorontalo Province has reached a satisfactory level, although there is still room for improvement. Community education on politics with a technology-based approach is also crucial, especially in addressing digital divides. By involving technology, political education can become more accessible to the populace. It is hoped that political participation will increase, voters will be better educated, and local democracy will become stronger. Communities engaged in politics have greater potential to influence policies, monitor the government, and uphold accountability. Technology-based political education is a progressive step towards achieving the goal of community awareness and participation in general elections. The influence of gender and temephos exposure on community participation in dengue prevention: a compartmental mathematical model

BackgroundThe use of temephos, the most common intervention for the chemical control of Aedes aegypti over the last half century, has disappointing results in control of the infection. The footprint of Aedes and the diseases it carries have spread relentlessly despite massive volumes of temephos. Recent advances in community participation show this might be more effective and sustainable for the control of the dengue vector.MethodsUsing data from the Camino Verde cluster randomized controlled trial, a compartmental mathematical model examines the dynamics of dengue infection with different levels of community participation, taking account of gender of respondent and exposure to temephos.ResultsSimulation of dengue endemicity showed community participation affected the basic reproductive number of infected people. The greatest short-term effect, in terms of people infected with the virus, was the combination of temephos intervention and community participation. There was no evidence of a protective effect of temephos 220 days after the onset of the spread of dengue.ConclusionsMale responses about community participation did not significantly affect modelled numbers of infected people and infectious mosquitoes. Our model suggests that, in the long term, community participation alone may have the best results. Adding temephos to community participation does not improve the effect of community participation alone.

Assessment of sustainability in the Wulo Abiye watershed, central highlands of Ethiopia

Assessing the sustainability of watersheds holds significant importance for regional natural resource management and to achieve sustainable development. This study investigated the sustainability of the Wulo Abiye watershed, central highlands of Ethiopia. The sustainability status of the watershed was evaluated by using 17 indicators representing the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development goals (SDGs) based on the local and existing conditions of the watershed. The results indicated that environmental sustainability was at 'high' level, while social and economic sustainability and the aggregate index were at ‘moderate’ levels. The overall level of community participation in the planning and evaluation phases of watershed management was at 'low' levels. The implementation phase was at 'high' level. Overall, the sustainability status of watershed management and level of community participation were at ‘moderate’ levels. The study concluded that integrated support is needed to overcome the identified challenges to achieve sustainable development in watersheds.

Level of Community Participation in 3R Based Household Waste Management in North Banjarmasin District

Partisipasi masyarakat dalam pengelolaan sampah sangat penting dilakukan karena dapat mengurangi volume timbulan sampah setiap tahunnya. Oleh karena itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis tingkat partisipasi masyarakat dalam pengelolaan sampah rumah tangga berbasis 3R di Kecamatan Banjarmasin Utara, Kota Banjarmasin. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif dengan analisis data deskriptif persentase dan kategorisasi. Populasi dan sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah 378 kepala keluarga yang berdomisili di Kelurahan Alalak Utara, Kecamatan Banjarmasin Utara, Kota Banjarmasin. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tingkat partisipasi masyarakat dalam pengelolaan sampah rumah tangga berbasis 3R di Kecamatan Banjarmasin Utara Kota Banjarmasin dikategorikan sangat rendah. Sangat rendahnya tingkat partisipasi masyarakat dalam pengelolaan sampah rumah tangga berbasis 3R disebabkan karena kurang dilibatkannya masyarakat umum dalam merencanakan program dan evaluasi program yang berkaitan dengan pengelolaan sampah. Selain itu, program pengelolaan sampah yang telah ditentukan tidak semua wilayah dapat merasakannya sehingga menyebabkan masih ada beberapa masyarakat yang tidak tau adanya program pengelolaan sampah yang sedang dilaksanakan. Diharapkan dari hasil penelitian ini masyarakat dan pemerintah setempat dapat berkolaborasi dan berpartisipasi aktif dalam mengelola sampah yang berwawasan lingkungan dan dapat memanfaatkan sampah dengan baik.

Reform and Community Level Participation: The Overturn of Stop, Question, and Frisk (SQF) in New York City

Though there has been a wealth of work showing that negative experiences with government lead to less political participation, there is little understanding of how to address this problem. That is, it is unclear whether reform to negative government behavior can also address the negative consequences of that behavior. This paper uses the overturn of Stop, Question, and Frisk in New York City to show that despite a significant change to police behavior, having experienced a high level of policing continues to depress voter turnout. Furthermore, it uses residents who have moved within New York City after the change in policy to show that residing in a community that was heavily policed continues to influence voter behavior, even if an individual never directly experienced high levels of policing. This is in line with communities both being changed by police policies and community transmission of norms around participation.

Partisipasi Masyarakat Pesisir dalam Melestarikan Hutan Mangrove di Kecamatan Pasir Sakti Kabupaten Lampung Timur

The purpose of this study was to analyze the level of community participation in activities to preserve mangrove forests and to analyze factors related to community participation in preserving mangrove forests in Pasir Sakti District, East Lampung. The research method used in this study was a survey method, then the collected data was tabulated based on each category and analyzed descriptively and Spearman Rank test. The conclusion is that the level of community participation in activities to preserve mangrove forests involving processes that include planning, implementation and evaluation is in the medium category, and the utilization of the results is in the high category. Factors related to community participation in preserving mangrove forests are level of non-formal education, type of work, number of family dependents, length of stay, distance of house from mangrove location, role of community leaders, role of farmer groups, government support, and role of non-governmental organizations. government organization, while the factors that are not related are age and level of education.

Community participation in tourism development at Tanjung Setumu Beach, Dompak Island, Tanjungpinang City

Tourism is one of the important sectors in regional development because it is able to make a significant contribution to regional income. One of the tourism locations in Tanjungpinang city is Tanjung Setumu Beach on Dompak Island which occupies a strategic position close to the urban center, offers beautiful scenery, and is an attractive tourist destination. Thus, Tanjung Setumu Beach can improve the community's economy, open up employment and business opportunities, and contribute to regional income, especially through tourism management that involves direct community participation. Active participation from the community plays a very important role in supporting the development of tourism, especially community-based development, considering that successful development requires participation from various parties. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of community participation in tourism development at Tanjung Setumu Beach. The research was conducted in May-June 2023 with a quantitative descriptive approach using Likert Scale analysis. Based on the research results, the level of community participation in tourism management at Tanjung Setumu Beach, according to the score results, reached a good category on several indicators, such as providing labor, ideas, material contributions, and promotions for the purpose of developing tourist attractions.

Embracing The Vanguard Role: Obstacles Faced by Health Cadres in Fulfilling Societal Responsibilities

Background: Health cadres play a crucial role in community development, serving as primary health managers responsible for mobilizing communities and fostering self-help initiatives to improve health outcomes. Despite their significance, challenges such as poor communication leading to missed visits by mothers with toddlers hinder program execution. Understanding and addressing these challenges is essential for establishing a resilient healthcare system that optimizes cadre contributions.Method: A qualitative, phenomenological approach was employed in this study. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 diverse participants, including the Head of the Public Health Center, the Coordinator of Health Cadres, Health Cadres, and Community Members. Informant selection utilized purposive techniques and snowball sampling, with an interview guide containing open-ended questions as the research instrument. The data analysis followed a descriptive approach based on the Miles and Huberman model.Results: Challenges faced by health cadres varied across regions, encompassing factors such as differing community participation levels, heavy administrative tasks, and conflicts among cadres. Despite these challenges, most cadres exhibited high commitment, motivation, and familial support, mitigating potential issues. Each cadre adopted a unique approach to anticipate and address challenges associated with their roles. Regular coaching from Public Health Centers and implementing simplified administrative systems were identified as potential strategies to enhance cadre performance.

Level of Community Participation in Development of Denai Lama Village Tourism Village

This research delves into the community participation in developing a tourism village in Denai Lama Village, Pantai Labu District. Employing quantitative methods and factor analysis on 85 samples, which includes pokdarwis officials and traders from Pasar Kamu and Paloh Naga, the study drew significant findings. The results indicate that manipulation, therapy, information, placement, collaboration, and citizen control significantly influence community participation. However, consultation and delegation factors showed lesser impact. There are both supporting and constraining elements affecting community involvement. Key enablers for active community participation include available opportunities, individual willingness, and capability to effectively engage. On the other hand, individual attributes and demographics, such as age, gender, and education level, can inhibit participation. The study highlights the vital role of government and institutional intervention in promoting community engagement in decision-making processes and in the execution of tourism village projects. For the Denai Lama Village, it's crucial to understand how human demographics may limit community involvement, guiding strategies to enhance active participation in future tourism village developments.

Market–community collaborative wildlife management in Malawi: subjectivities and shifting configurations of protests and celebrations

SummaryAlthough wildlife management models across the world have since the early 1980s shifted from top-down fortress conservation to different labels of people-friendly community-based conservation, their outcomes remain contested. This paper explores how, and in whose interests, approaches to wildlife conservation in Malawi have been reconfigured from fortress conservation to market–community collaborative management. Based on qualitative field data, we demonstrate how varying levels of community participation in the processes of wildlife conservation transformed the identities and interests of powerful groups of people regarding wildlife conservation in the Majete Wildlife Reserve. We highlight how commodification and monetarization of wildlife conservation served the interests of the emergent powerful groups whilst marginalizing those of the weak. The work indicates how new community identities with regard to wildlife conservation mask the power hegemonies that dictate mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion regarding natural resource use.

Partisipasi Masyarakat Dalam Perencanaan Pembangunan Di Kampung Trikora Distrik Benawa Kabupaten Yalimo.

This research is entitled Community Participation in Development Planning in Trikora Village, Benawa District, Yalimo Regency. Community participation in Trikora Village, Benawa District, Regency is still very lacking. Because if you look at the level of participation such as thoughts, skills, goods and money, it is still very lacking, but participation in terms of community energy is very enthusiastic. Apart from that, the main factors that influence the level of community participation are age level, length of stay, intensity of interaction and type of leadership.The results of this research are that there are five levels of community participation in village development, namely thought, energy, expertise, goods and money. The participation that can be carried out by the community is participation in terms of thinking, because in other matters the people of Trikora village are still very limited in their abilities. There are two factors that influence the level of community participation in development in Trikora Village, namely internal and external which are described by age level, length of stay, intensity of interaction, and type of leadership. The age level of the community in Trikora village greatly influences the low level of participation, the length of stay is also very influential because it is directly related to the community's emotional ties to where they live. The intensity of interaction also influences low participation in Trikora village and the level of autocratic leadership makes people reluctant to participate in developing Trikora village.
 

A Study on the Relationship between Community Participation and the Improvement of Slum Settlement Quality in Medan City, Indonesia

This study explores the intricate relationship between community participation and the improvement of slum settlement quality in Area 33 of Belawan II Sub-District, Medan Belawan, Indonesia. The research employs a mixed-methods approach, revealing a significant correlation between environmental cleanliness, community participation, and the quality of slum settlements. The findings indicate that poor drainage conditions, exacerbated by waste blockages leading to stagnant water, and low community participation, driven by a lack of awareness and minimal involvement in environmental initiatives, critically impede the advancement of slum settlement conditions. Through the implementation of socialization and education programs, a notable increase in community awareness and engagement in environmental management has been observed, suggesting these as pivotal strategies for enhancing slum settlement quality. The study identifies the utilization of available land and the maximization of community participation as essential strategies to mitigate threats such as flooding and disease outbreaks. A SWOT analysis conducted within the study underscores the importance of prioritizing educational programs, community participation enhancement, and optimal land use to create sustainable and habitable environments. The conclusion emphasizes that despite the low level of community participation affecting settlement quality, significant opportunities for improvement exist. The study recommends government-community collaboration and the adoption of educational initiatives to foster environmental conditions conducive to community well-being in slum settlements. This research contributes to the body of knowledge by demonstrating that informed community involvement is crucial for addressing local environmental challenges and enhancing slum settlement quality.

Conditions of Sustainable Welfare: A Cross-Case Empirical Analysis of 22 Locality-Based Welfare Systems in Decentralised Indonesia

The existing body of knowledge underpinning welfare state theory suggests that most welfare systems depend on growth. It signifies that the state–market mechanism is a prerequisite for achieving welfare. However, the current ecological crisis highlights the detrimental effects of unchecked economic growth, which often exploits human and natural resources. This phenomenon calls for a countermovement that protects society and natural resources through social and public policies. Within the domain of sustainable welfare, an argument points towards the need to gain an empirical understanding of sustainable welfare policies and gather qualitative evidence that explains the conditions and mechanisms of “better” eco-social performance. This article aims to identify conditions leading to achieving sustainable welfare outcomes and discern under which conditions sustainable welfare outcomes are attainable or fail, especially in the context of the Global South. It draws on empirical data to analyse the locality-based welfare systems of 22 villages across decentralised Indonesia using a conditions-oriented approach of the crisp-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. The findings shed light on the institutional setting and policy mix leading to sustainable welfare outcomes in less-industrialised, informal economy-based, and highly decentralised country contexts. The evidence points to the presence of sustainable welfare outcomes when a substantial level of subsidiarity, self-governance, and meaningful community participation, and a policy mix covering basic needs, services for vulnerable groups, a functioning local economy, and innovative ecological practices are in place. While past research predominantly leans towards a statist-focused approach to sustainable welfare, this study proposes a society-focused perspective. It argues that transforming both modes of production and relational dynamics among society, state, and market in the Global South context is necessary, where an empowered society serves as a prerequisite for sustainable welfare outcomes.

Sustainable political commitment is necessary for institutionalizing community participation in health policy-making: Insights from Iran

BackgroundCommunity participation is currently utilized as a national strategy to promote public health and mitigate health inequalities across the world. While community participation is acknowledged as a civic right in the Constitution of Iran and other related upstream documents, the government has typically failed in translating, integrating and implementing community participation in health system policy. The present study was conducted to determine the level of public voice consideration within the health policy in Iran and address fundamental interventions required to promote the public voice in the context of Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI). This study has originality because there is no study that addresses the requirements of institutionalizing community participation especially in low-middle-income countries, so Iran’s experience can be useful for other countries.MethodsMethodologically, this study utilized a multi-method and multi-strand sequential research design, including qualitative, comparative and documentary studies. In the first phase, the current level of community participation in the health policy cycle of Iran was identified using the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2) spectrum. In the second phase, a comparative study was designed to identify relevant interventions to promote the community participation level in the selected countries under study. In the third phase, a qualitative study was conducted to address the barriers, facilitators and strategies for improving the level of public participation. Accordingly, appropriate interventions and policy options were recommended. Interventions were reviewed in a policy dialogue with policy-makers and community representatives, and their effectiveness, applicability and practical feasibility were evaluated.ResultsBased on the IAP2 spectrum, the level of community participation in the health policy-making process is non-participation, while empowerment is set at the highest level in the upstream documents. Moreover, capacity-building, demand, mobilization of the local population, provision of resources and setting a specific structure were found to be among the key interventions to improve the level of community participation in Iran’s health sector. More importantly, “political will for action” was identified as the driving force for implementing the necessary health interventions.ConclusionsTo sum up, a paradigm shift in the governing social, economic and political philosophy; establishing a real-world and moral dialogue and communication between the government and the society; identifying and managing the conflicts of interest in the leading stockholders of the healthcare system; and, more importantly, maintaining a stable political will for action are integral to promote and institutionalize participatory governance in the health sector of Iran. All of the above will lead us to scheme, implement and institutionalize suitable interventions for participatory governance in health and medicine.

Perceived neighborhood social cohesion and functional disability among older adults: The moderating roles of sex, physical activity, and multi-morbidity.

Though the Ghanaian social structure is largely communal in several of its social life and social spaces, the extent to which cohesive neighbourhood affects functional ability of older persons and the moderating factors of the relationship, are unknown in Ghana. This study examines the moderating roles of sex, multimorbidity, and physical activity on the association between neighbourhood social cohesion and functional disability among older people in Ghana. A cross-sectional study of 4,446 people-50 years and older-from WHO's Study on global AGEing and adult health Ghana Wave 2 was employed. Functional disability-WHO Disability Assessment Schedule 2.0-and neighbourhood social cohesion measured with community-level participation, perceived trust and safety were studied. Generalised Logistic regressions with interactional tests were used to examine the associations. A more socially cohesive neighbourhood was significantly associated with a lower functional disability among older people (OR = 0.94, 95%CI: 0.93, 0.94; P<0.001). A similar relationship was found for community-level participation (aOR = 0.94, 95%CI: 0.94, 0.95; P<0.001) and perceived trust (aOR = 1.00, 95%CI: 0.99, 1.00; P<0.001). Community-level participation is associated with a lower functional disability among older people who were physically active (aOR = 0.98, 95%CI: 0.96, 0.99; P<0.001). Among the three individual-level measures of neighbourhood social cohesion, only physical activity (OR = 0.98, 95%CI: 0.98, 0.99; P<0.01) moderated the association between community-level participation and functional disability. Community-level participation, along with physical activity, may be relevant in improving functional ability among older people. The results highlight the usefulness of policy to ensure a more socially cohesive neighbourhood for older people in Ghana to improve their quality of life.

The Strategy for Local Community Participation in Tourism Planning Around Conservation Areas in Indonesia

Taman Nasional Bali Barat (TNBB) is a nature conservation areas in Indonesia. TNBB has been designated by the government as a nature tourism destination that admits development precedence because it is one of the national tourism strategic areas (NTSA). The sustainability of tourism in conservation areas is significantly determined by the level of local community participation in the tourism planning process. However, based on previous research, the level of local community participation in the tourism planning process in TNBB is low. This research aims to formulate a strategy for local community participation in the tourism planning process around the conservation areas. The method employed to achieve this objective is Appreciative Inquiry (AI). AI is a qualitative approach in participatory tourism planning. Data is collected and analyzed by following the AI stages or 4D cycle. The results show that local communities participate in tourism decision-making. The level of dialogue that has been taking place so far shows a pattern of decision-making or tourism planning process based on conservation areas. Starting from personal conversations in the context of friendship, then developing into organizational discourse, and later formulated as a shared vision and mission to optimize the function of conservation areas as tourism destinations. The involvement of local communities in the level of dialogue is a strategy for local community participation in the tourism planning process in TNBB.

Community participation and evaluation of mangrove forest rehabilitation activities using multicriteria analysis in Pasar Rawa village, Langkat Regency

Mangrove forests in Pasar Rawa Village have experienced degradation and damage due to activities changing the function of forest areas into oil palm plantations and fish farms. To overcome this, community participation is key in evaluating forest and land rehabilitation (FLR) as a step to restore, preserve, and improve the function and productivity of these forests and land. This research aims to analyze the level of participation and the determination of a set of criteria and indicators for the success of FLR evaluation. This research uses the method scale Likert to determine the level of community participation, and multicriteria analysis is used to choose a set of criteria and indicators for the success of FLR evaluation. This research shows that community participation in planning, implementation, monitoring, and post-planting activities received a high category, and the FLR success rate was 82.3%, including the "good" predicate. This is due to the heightened awareness of the importance of protecting mangrove forests. However, it is still necessary to improve FLR activities in the future so that the mangrove forest in Pasar Rawa village remains sustainable.

The Level of Community Participation in Human Resource Development in Barakkae Village, Bone Regency

The aim of this research is to determine the level of community participation in development in the Barakkae Village, Lamuru District, Bone Regency. In this study, the author employs a descriptive method using a qualitative approach. The research was conducted in Barakkae Village, Lamuru District, Bone Regency, with primary data collected from 8 individuals. Data collection techniques involved field studies, literature reviews, and included observations, in-depth interviews, as well as documentation. The research took place over a period of 1 month. The findings of this research indicate that community participation in human resource development in Barakkae Village, Lamuru District, Bone Regency, is not entirely consistent with the views expressed by Cohen and Uphoff in 1977. Barriers to community participation in human resource development in Barakkae Village can be identified, particularly in decision-making, where there appears to be a lack of space provided by the village to accommodate the aspirations of the community. Efforts to overcome barriers to human resource development include the provision of proposal repositories, especially on a priority scale, involving the participation of village officials who encourage community involvement on a voluntary basis.

The Level of Sustainability of PNPM-MP Achievements in the Community in Gowa Regency

It is hoped that the government’s efforts to carry out development with an emphasis on community empowerment will revive the spirit of togetherness and mutual cooperation which is increasingly being eroded by cities. The purpose of this study was to determine the level of sustainability of PNPM-MP achievement in the people of Gowa Regency. This research is a case study with a descriptive research type, namely to provide a comprehensive picture of the level and benefits of community participation through PNPM-MP in the implementation of the Development Program in Gowa Regency at each stage in the process mechanism of PNPM- MP activities. MP that has been going on. The results of the study show that the level of achievement of sustainability program has been carried out according to its objectives, with indications that (a) the community actively maintains facilities and infrastructure by providing personnel and material support according to available local capabilities, (b) program maintenance still refers to the learning outcomes of PNPM- MP through the PNPM-MP Implementation Manual, (c) local government appeals and norms and rules result from community agreements in deliberation forums.&#x0D; Keywords: sustainability level, government, development, community, empowerment

Accountability for Management of Village Fund Allocations in Klari Village, Karawang Regency for 2020 – 2021

This study aims to examine the level of accountability in managing village fund allocations in Klari Village. Allocation of village funds is an important source of funding aimed at encouraging the development and welfare of the community at the village level. However, to achieve this goal, it is important for the village to have good accountability in managing these funds. This research uses a qualitative approach by conducting in- depth interviews with various related parties, such as the village head, village officials, community leaders, and villagers. The collected data were analyzed using a descriptive method to describe the current state of accountability. The results of the study show that accountability in managing village fund allocations in Klari Village still needs to be improved. Several factors affect the level of accountability, namely the lack of transparency in village financial reporting, the low level of community participation in making decisions regarding the allocation of funds, and the lack of outside supervision. In addition, there are administrative and technical obstacles that impede the efficient use of village funds. The use of information technology that has not been maximized is also one of the challenges in increasing accountability. Therefore, the recommendations from this study are the importance of increasing transparency, community participation, and external oversight in managing village fund allocations. In addition, a better understanding of related regulations and the use of information technology is needed to increase efficiency and effectiveness in managing village funds.
