Continuous maintenance, management and protection efforts are very important in turtle conservation to avoid extinction and damage. This research aims to calculate the level of community participation in turtle conservation activities using quantitative methods by distributing questionnaires. The population in this study was the entire Patoreang Mampie Hamlet community around the beach and the sample size was 40 respondents. The results of the research show that the level of community participation in the form of planning is included in the high category with a score of 2.71 because the community's environmental awareness is very high and the management of the turtle house has provided education related to maintaining and preserving the existence of turtles and the level of community participation in the form of management is included in the category high with a score of 2.75 as evidenced by community participation in turtle conservation activities, turtle festival activities, and the release of turtle hatchlings. Participation in the form of monitoring and evaluation is included in the high category with a score of 2.60, which means that the community often gives free time to monitor and oversee conservation activities around the turtle house area so that they run well and effectively. USG matrix analysis and power interest to improve community environmental awareness: A case study of mangrove land cover to support community and environmental education

This study employed a mixed-method approach to analyze the composition of mangrove forests. The transect method and remote sensing through supervised classification using Google Earth Engine (GEE) were utilized to assess changes in mangrove areas in 2017, 2019, and 2021. The findings suggest that this study should be included in population and environmental education courses. The results revealed that Avicennia marina mangroves had the highest importance index (INP) values at three different locations. Between 2017 and 2019, mangrove areas decreased from 30.62 hectares to 27.98 hectares. However, from 2019 to 2021, the mangrove area increased from 27.98 hectares to 29.18 hectares, largely due to reforestation efforts in the Pulau Dua Nature Reserve. The NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) values indicated "bushy" criteria, ranging from 0.43 to 1.00. The Normalized Difference Mangrove Index (NDMI) values fell into the "Rare" (-1.00 to 0.32) and "Medium" (0.33 to 0.43) categories. The Urgency, Seriousness, and Growth (USG) matrix analysis and Power Interest assessment identified illegal logging, erosion, and waste as significant causes of mangrove decline. Stakeholders, including village chiefs, religious leaders, traditional leaders, and youth leaders, must focus on preserving the mangrove ecosystem in the CAPD. The study's results are vital for educational purposes, particularly in population and environmental education courses. These courses should address environmental issues, prevention strategies, and conservation activities, which can be integrated into the curriculum. This will enable youth to contribute effectively to environmental awareness programs.

Environmental Care Behavior through Waste Bank (Study at Teratai Waste Bank Pondok Pucung Sub-district, Pondok Aren District, South Tangerang City)

This study investigates the effectiveness of Waste Bank Lotus in enhancing community environmental awareness in South Tangerang, Indonesia. With the escalating waste generation in tandem with population growth, waste management has emerged as a critical issue exacerbated by limited landfill capacity. The Lotus Waste Bank initiative seeks to mitigate these challenges by instilling environmental consciousness among residents. Employing descriptive research methods, including observation, interviews, questionnaires, documentation, and literature review, data were gathered from 63 participants selected through purposive sampling. The results reveal that Waste Bank Lotus has successfully raised community awareness regarding environmental issues, fostered responsible behaviors in waste, water, and energy management, and adopted eco-friendly products. Moreover, various factors, including intention, community support, personal autonomy, access to information, and favorable conditions, influence community environmental behavior. Environmental awareness through waste banks entails building awareness, motivation to act, evaluation, attempted implementation, and integration into daily routines. This research underscores the pivotal role of waste banks in promoting sustainable waste management practices and cultivating a culture of environmental stewardship within communities.

Pelatihan Sintesis Edible Film Plastik Sebagai Alternatif Ramah Lingkungan Dalam Pengemasan Pempek

Synthetic plastic used as a food product wrapper, including Pempek, has become a serious source of environmental problems. To reduce the negative impact of the waste, community service activities were carried out in the form of training in making plastic film edible as an alternative to pempek wrapping. This training focuses on pempek business actors, with the aim of providing understanding and skills in producing and using plastic film edible. The training material includes the selection of environmentally friendly raw materials, biodegradable plastic production techniques, and application as pempek wrapper. The evaluation is carried out through the measurement of participants' understanding, the quality of the plastic produced, and the market reception of pempek that uses biodegradable wrapping. The training results showed an increase in the understanding of participants related to environmental sustainability and their ability to produce biodegradable plastic. Market acceptance of pempek with environmentally friendly wrapping also provides a positive encouragement to the application of sustainable practices in the culinary sector. Thus, this community service activity is expected to be a concrete step in reducing the use of conventional plastic in the food industry, especially in pempek products. In addition, this training is expected to have a positive impact on community environmental awareness and encourage sustainable practices in the use of food products wrapping

Ecopedagogy of Island Communities: Conception, Planning to Action in Building Environmental Awareness in Kelapa Island and Harapan Island, Administrative District Kepulauan Seribu-DKI Jakarta

This study intends to examine the conception, planning, and action in building environmental awareness in Kelapa Island and Harapan Island, Administrative District Kepulauan Seribu, DKI Jakarta. Methodologically, this study is based on a critical paradigm and a qualitative approach. The study was conducted in May–June 2023. Data collection techniques were observation and in-depth interviews. Whereas, the data analysis technique was interpretive phenomenological analysis. The study results show that: (i) education is the main focus of building environmental awareness; (ii) environmental awareness has been instilled in children from an early age through informal, formal, and non-formal education. In the context of informal and non-formal education, parents play an active role in instilling environmental awareness values. Furthermore, in formal education planting environmental awareness is socialized through the learning curriculum; (iii) conception and planning of environmental awareness in the community is carried out continuously and sustainably; and (iv) concrete actions to build community environmental awareness are carried out with various campaigns, movements and routine actions carried out by multi-stakeholders to create environmental sustainability on the Kelapa Island and Harapan Island, Administrative District Kepulauan Seribu-DKI Jakarta.

Analisis Komunikasi Penyadaran Masyarakat terhadap Perbaikan Lingkungan Wilayah Pesisir oleh Dinas Pembinaan Potensi Maritim Pangkalan Utama TNI AL VI Di Pulau Kodingareng Lompo

The purpose of this study is to analyze the form of campaign communication used by Dispotmar Lantamal VI in order to make the people of Kodingareng Island aware of the importance of preserving the environment, analyze the communication strategy used by Dispotmar Lantamal VI in sensitizing people on Kodingareng Lompo Island about the importance of preserving the coastal environment so that it does not Sustainable environmental damage, analyzing the factors supporting and inhibiting the communication process faced by Dispotmar Lantamal VI in an effort to build public awareness on Kodingareng Lompo Island about the importance of protecting the coastal environment so that there is no sustainable environmental damage. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach which aims to provide an overview of the communication campaign, strategic communication, as well as the supporting and inhibiting factors for the success of communication carried out by Dispotmar Lantamal VI, especially to the people of Kodingareng Lompo Island. In an effort to make the people of Kodingareng Island aware of the importance of preserving the environment, Lantamal VI as one of the units at the TNI AL VI Main Base responsible for fostering coastal communities conducted a communication campaign. Communication begins with planning a campaign in the form of finding problems, setting goals, getting to know the audience, planning campaign times and strategies, plans and resources. The awareness communication strategy carried out by Dispotmar Lantamal VI is closely related to environmental communication because of communication efforts to increase community environmental awareness on Kodingareng Lompo Island. Supporting the success of the Lantamal VI Dispotmar communication in an effort to build public awareness on Kodingareng Lompo Island comes from the readiness of personnel and well-organized communication activities and is supported by the younger generation who are under the guidance of the Lantamal VI Dispotmar, internal and external units of Lantamal VI, not related to maritime related matters. community leaders, as well as communication methods that prioritize kinship and humanism. The barriers to successful communication are influenced by the level of welfare of the people of Kodingareng Island, the easy materials and manufacture of fish bombs, inadequate waste disposal facilities, lack of supervision and punishment from the relevant authorities and the presence of unscrupulous officers who take advantage of the situation for their own benefit.

Religious Activities and Environmental Concern in Communities in the Cibanten Watershed of Serang City

Natural resources and the environment are often neglected as targets of science that continue to be exploited. Environmental ethics is an attitude and responsibility that must be possessed by every human being towards his environment. There is a lot of environmental damage caused by human activities in both developed and developing countries. Islam as one of the religions that tries to realize the internalization of values ​​of concern for the environment must be carried out by humans as followers of religion. In the reality of daily life, humans will be very dependent on their natural environment, for example, human dependence on water (rivers). The behavior of people who throw garbage anywhere is suspected to be another factor causing flooding. This research examines how the community's religious activities are related to concern for the environment in efforts to prevent natural disasters such as floods which can maintain the sustainability of the community's environment in the Cibanten Watershed (DAS). This study uses a descriptive qualitative method of observing religious activities using an Interpretative Phenomenology approach observing every religious activity and practice of community environmental awareness as the object of research. The results of this study indicate that the religious activities of the people in the Cibanten River Basin (DAS) where the majority of the people are Muslims, from the religious activities of the people when viewed from their religious patterns are classified as inclusive and pluralist. Meanwhile, the activities of caring for the environment for the people who live in the Cibanten Watershed (DAS) are still very concerning. People tend to ignore the Cibanten River, for example, there are still many people who throw garbage into the Cibanten River.

Environmental Awareness Based on Community Knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior of The Environmental Impact of Plastic Packaging Use in Urban Areas

The problem of plastic packaging is a threat to human life. This problem is illustrated by high plastic consumption and poor plastic waste management. The purpose of this paper is to discuss community environmental awareness regarding the use of plastic packaging. This paper uses a qualitative approach with an analysis of the literature study. From the results of the study, it was found that community environmental awareness is still low. It is necessary to increase awareness to encourage environmentally friendly plastic usage behavior. Behavior toward the use of plastic starts from minimizing its consumption and the willingness to sort and recycle. Many factors influence the willingness to participate in plastic management. By manipulating these factors, a sustainable plastics management strategy can be achieved. Raising awareness through increasing knowledge, increasing guilt, optimizing facilities, and supporting regulations. Strategy cannot work without the cooperation of various stakeholders. The common goal of creating a healthy and clean environment and an empowered community is the impetus for improving plastic management.

Increasing community environmental awareness, participation in conservation, and livelihood enhancement through tourism

ABSTRACT In line with social exchange theory, this case study explores how a previously indifferent and unsympathetic local community participates in the conservation of Touran National Park through community-based tourism. An in-depth analysis of local community members, local authorities, and NGOs revealed that due to changes in society's socio-cultural structure, the community’s awareness of conservation has significantly increased and resulted in active participation in natural and cultural heritage. The findings provide an alternative to social exchange theory, suggesting that benefits should generally outweigh human social interaction and behaviour calculus costs. Furthermore, rural youth and women have become much more prominent despite many public participation dilemmas and rigid government structures. Finally, theoretical and practical implications for future research are discussed.

Environmental quality model to have sustainable environment

The aim of this study is to propose environmental quality model in order to have sustainable environment. This survey study distributed the questionnaires to 375 persons of local community in Jakarta in Indonesia using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). The research found that model suggested was good fit for the data. The study result presents that socio-economic domain have significant positive association with of environmental quality. However, the positive associations between ecological domain and meteorological domain was not confirmed in this study. The use intensity of water resources and food production have significant positive association with ecological domain. However, the relationship between waste management and ecological domain was not supported in this study. Air pollutant, water pollution, and earth temperature have significant positive connection with meteorological domain. Water shortages, human health problems, and community environmental awareness have significantly positive relationship with socio-economic domain. It can be concluded that environmental quality model hypothesized can be used for local community in Jakarta in Indonesia in order to have sustainable environment.

Environmental Literacy through Go Green in Academic Libraries

Rising environmental destruction and human actions in global environments have contributed to the need to provide meaningful ecological awareness to educate present and future generations. Many governmental and non-governmental organizations and educational institutions have started community environmental awareness to make society aware of environmental conditions by going green for sustainability. In the environmental literacy movement, academic libraries can also play a critical role in building a sustainable community through green initiatives inside their spaces. Academic libraries can disseminate information on environmental protection and educate their user groups to play an important role in sustainably protecting the environment. Green libraries cover the environmental aspects of the building's structure, green practices, and facilities. However, going green in libraries does not necessarily entail constructing a new design to integrate green environments. Libraries are also urged to study their current buildings and facilities that can be made sustainable by going green and being a model for teaching the significance of environmental sustainability to increase environmental literacy. This paper aims to highlight the background and significance of environmental literacy and clarify how academic libraries can be environmental educators by going green. Besides, in this article, several recommendations are made to enhance library professionals’ environmental literacy efforts.

Fostering Community Environmental Awareness Attitudes through Tuban Mangrove Center Foundation Program

The purpose of this research is to know the attitude of environmental awareness conducted by Mangrove Center. This research is based on the high environmental damage in Tuban City. According to the law number 32-year 2009, society has right in managing the environment both independent and organizational. One of the organizations involved in the environment is Mangrove Center Foundation Tuban which is empowers the surrounding society to participate in environmental management. This research uses qualitative methods and with case study design. According to the research, it is obtained data that the attitude of environmental awareness in the society can be formed and grown through the provision of environmental management, such as: concerned with the cleanliness of the environment, tree-planting, management of natural tourism sector, etc.

Assessment of Levels of Community Awareness to Effects of Forest Degradation and their Environmental Management Practices in Jimma Zone, South western Ethiopia

This study aimed to assess the levels of community awareness to the environmental effects of growing use of forest product for peoples’ livelihood and their management practices in Jimma Zone. Thus, local farming communities, Development Agents (DA), Agriculture and Natural resource, Forest and Environmental Protection Officials & Experts are the participant of this study. The study employed descriptive survey research design and both qualitative and quantitative methods of data collections were employed. To assess community environmental awareness survey questionnaire questions (both open and close ended) were distributed for 240 sample respondents. An interview with10 Key informant interviews were also conducted with the head of natural resource management offices of selected woredas and six development agents (DA) in sample selected kebeles and four focus group discussions (FDG) consisted of 10 members were also employed to collect qualitative data.The findings show that all the respondents aware of forest and natural resource degradation about (87%) and (75.4%) were aware of clearing of forest to expand farmland for growing population and cutting trees for fuel wood, charcoal and other forest productsrespectively. Only very few of the respondents were indicate that lack of community awareness to sustainable use and management of forest resource (44.5%)and lack of clear understanding of forest laws and regulation among the community (40.4%)as a cause of deforestation. Therefore, the assessment of community awareness to forest resource degradation survey result shows that all of the farmers in the study area have been aware of natural resource and environmental degradation. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that there is a need of modifying educational/training programs for local communities considering the existing knowledge and practices in a particular area.

Apakah Pendidikan Lingkungan Merupakan Faktor Utama Pembentuk Perilaku Lingkungan pada Masyarakat di Negara Berkembang?

Environmental education in developed countries is currently being intensively developed to increase the environmental awareness of the community in order to achieve sustainable development. But for developing countries like Indonesia, is environmental education the most urgent thing to do first to improve the successful implementation of environmental management system? This paper presents an analysis of social aspects related to the environmental behavior of a society, which is about the importance of the "environmental education" factor for people in developing countries in general, in Indonesia specifically. In addition, other factors that form the environmental behavior of the community and their relationships with one another are also discussed. The topic chosen to represent environmental behavior in this paper is the community's environmental awareness for the waste management system in Padang, West Sumatra, Indonesia. This study uses structural equation modeling (SEM) (which consists of exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA)) to investigate the environmental behavior of the community represented by 609 respondents living in the Padang city. The results of the study show that environmental education factor is ranked 3rd out of 8 determinants of the formation of environmental behavior in society, namely after the factors of "government role" and "law enforcement". This research is expected to be able to provide information to various stakeholders where providing environmental education to the community has not been able to effectively change the environmental behavior of the community if the government's role in making a good environmental management system and strong law enforcement have not been carried out.

The Effect of Urban Land Use Changing on Green Area Neighborhoods No. 336 & 338 in Baghdad – Case Study

The role of the green areas lies in being one of the systems that plays the vital role in achieving the environmental dimension besides the socio-cultural body and the economic dimension in the hidden value of ecosystem services. However, many developing countries are characterized by a state of low community environmental awareness, which coincides with the basic need for land for housing and other uses, to take precedence over nature protection strategies. In the absence of clear planning and long-term planning strategies, all this led to abuses and violations of urban land use. In Iraq, the situation became more apparent due to the political, security and social conditions that followed the year 2003. Hence, the research problem of the phenomenon of excesses on the use of green land in the Iraqi cities in general and Baghdad in particular, which led to many bad effects. The aim of the research is to explore the importance of green spaces and the value of biological diversity, and to detect the effects of the phenomenon of continuous abuses. In order to address the problem of research and achieve its objectives, the premise of its content has been developed: Green infrastructure as a hierarchical and interrelated thematic system that can contribute to the production of a basic design of the city that believes in its functions and enhances its role and ensure its sustainability. The study followed an analytical descriptive approach to data collection and vocabulary extraction in relation to green areas, levels and hierarchies, and the extraction of theoretical indicators for the effects of the changes that occurred on them. They were tested in practice in neighboorhoods no. 338, 336 in the city of Baghdad, in the light of a field analysis and survey. The research found a decline in the area of ​​green areas as their ratios do not meet the local and global standards required, especially with the increasing of urban and population density over the past decade. In addition to what the neighborhoods suffer from urban chaos and a severe shortage of infrastructure services. Greenness and its functional and visual role in beautifying the urban landscape can be observed only in the remaining agricultural use, in nurseries and orchards, which are private property that does not include the general population in the use of its functions. Finally, the research presented its vision regarding the treatment of the negative effects that were diagnosed, in light of the strategy to provide green spaces in the random neighbourhoods at multiple levels, starting with the residential clusters, through the streets and roads pedestrians, and ended with the level of neighborhoods.

Challenges and benefits of conducting environmental justice research in a school setting.

Environmental justice (EJ) research requires attention to consequences for research participants beyond those typically considered by institutional review boards. The imbalance of power between impacted communities and those who create and regulate pollution creates challenges for participation, yet research can also benefit those involved. Our community-academic partnership designed the Rural Air Pollutants and Children's Health (RAPCH) study to provide positive impacts while measuring health effects at three low-resource public middle schools near concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) in North Carolina. We evaluated perceived benefits and challenges of study involvement by interviewing school staff and community liaisons who facilitated data collection. Reported benefits included enhancement of students' academic environment and increased community environmental awareness; challenges were associated mainly with some participants' immaturity. Leadership from a strong community-based organization was crucial to recruitment, yet our approach entailed minimal focus on EJ, which may have limited opportunities for community education or organizing for environmental health.

Teaching Environmental Education in Raising Pupils’ Environmental Awareness: A Process Approach

This study aimed at determining the level of community environmental awareness and concept among selected Grade VI pupils in Northeast II-A Central School and Catalino Sumile Memorial School, Dalipuga, Iligan City, Philippines. The former was taught environmental concepts through process approach using video and hands-on while the latter the traditional classroom instruction method. This study utilized the descriptive-correlational and inferential research design since the relationship and the differences between respondents’ profile and their community environment awareness level were tested at the 0.05 level of significance. The study utilized the following statistical techniques to analyze the gathered data: frequency and percentages, mean, standard deviation, likelihood ratio test, independent T-test and F-test. Findings reveal that there is a significant difference between the posttest results of the two groups wherein the process approach created better posttest results than the traditional approach. It also showed that the family income and the parent’s educational attainment have significant relationship with the posttest results of the respondents. Therefore, using process approach in teaching environmental concepts produces better academic achievement in pupils. It is also one way of increasing community environmental awareness in pupils whose young minds can be molded to become environmental advocates assuring sustainable future for next generations. Floodplains and Agenda 21: the Upper Nene Valley Project

AbstractThere is a growing awareness of how floodplain habitats contribute to global biodiversity and of the benefits of undrained floodplain ecosystems, for example: floodwater storage and improvement of water quality. Yet floodplain habitats in Britain are much diminished, with a recent survey showing only 4.2% of lowland river sites, with adjacent floodplain, had extensive wetlands remaining. This Agenda 21 pilot project addresses issues raised by local communities in six parishes along the Upper Nene Valley, in Northamptonshire. These include intensive agriculture, biodiversity conservation, recent serious flooding, gravel extraction and the pressure for housing developments. The project aims to increase the local community's environmental awareness, develop links with farmers and businesses and provide a valuable input to planning policies. Partners include the parish councils and residents within the project area, South Northamptonshire Council and University College Northampton.
