Urban community-based tourism development: A networked social capital model

The rapid and uncontrolled tourism growth has impacted local livelihoods in many cities through commodification, gentrification, and expropriation. Though community-based tourism offers a prospective development alternative, the phenomenon has been underexplored in urban contexts which are more complex than their rural counterparts. The urban dwellers who are seeking to engage in collective actions need social capital. This study deploys a qualitative ethnographic approach using an in-depth interviewing technique undertaken in three historic Bangkok communities to investigate the dual nature of social capital in promoting and impeding cooperation and collaboration. The study presents six analytical themes and the networked social capital model to explain the roles of positive and negative social capital in urban community-based tourism development.

Sustaining subak, the balinese traditional ecological knowledge in the contemporary context of Bali

Abstract Subak is a local organization that formalizes the Balinese traditional ecological knowledge and wisdom in managing and distributing water for agricultural purposes. This organization combines cosmology, spirituality, science, ecology, and engineering dimensions of knowledge. As the current development of Bali Island as one of the international tourist destinations has changed its landscape which involves various factors such as physical, social, and cultural. Hence, to what extent the traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) practice can be sustained in the current context and development setting become our focus of study. This paper has three objectives. The first is to collate/document the various perspectives of TEK from sustainable agriculture practices, ecological principles, water irrigation systems, and spiritual practices and values as part of the learning document. The second is to analyze the interdependence of the human and environmental systems in the context of the socio-ecological system framework for Subak TEK and its cultural sustainability. Third, to outline the potential effort to sustain Subak TEK by strengthening its adaptive capacity in the broader context of learning to strengthening the community based tourism planning. This study deploy the socio-ecological system, SES framework as the underlying theory and analysis and explore diverse initiatives to sustain Subak in the future. The study was conducted in conjunction with a sustainability leadership program which deployed an inter- and transdisciplinary approach of sustainability science that focuses on Subak as its case. Situational and content analysis from the workshop discussion notes is used to provide examples that describe diverse initiatives in tourism, agriculture, and education. The study found out that the SES framework of analysis in Subak TEK documented several core ritual activities, the interpretation of THK philosophy and its local wisdom and values which represent the interaction the social and natural system. Hence, demonstrate as a living monument with strong human institutions and nature interaction. Further, the Subak TEK has substantial community capital values that need to be strengthened by integration in the formal and non-formal education, the enhancement of the Tri Hita Karana (THK) awards and accreditation for tourism operators and hotels in the broader context of education for sustainable development framework as well as community-based tourism development planning. This initiative need to be supported by a community-based tourism by involving Pekaseh and youngsters in the current context of Bali community-based tourism.

Upaya Pengembangan Objek Wisata Air Terjun Sedudo Melalui Pendekatan Community Based Tourism di Desa Ngliman Kabupaten Nganjuk

This article aims to investigate, describe, and analyze initiatives to enhance the Sedudo Waterfall tourist destination by implementing a Community-Based Tourism (CBT) approach in Ngliman Village, Nganjuk Regency. The primary concern lies in the lack of integrated management, posing a hindrance to the progress of Sedudo Waterfall. Despite the natural beauty of the Sedudo Waterfall, there is a notable absence of an effective cleanliness management system. The facilities at Sedudo Waterfall have not received proper upkeep, and the tourist spot lacks cleanliness, evident in dirty seating and scattered waste from food and beverages throughout the area. To address this issue, theoretical foundations from UNEP and WTO are employed, utilizing the five main principles outlined in Community Based Tourism Development by Suansri (2003). Data was gathered through in-depth interviews with various informants at the Nganjuk Regency Culture and subsequently analyzed qualitatively. The study concludes that: achieving the implementation of Community-based Based Tourism at the Sedudo Waterfall tourist attraction is based on economic principles, social principles, cultural principles, environmental principles, and political principles. Although on economic principles there are limited regional government budgets allocated for developing Sedudo Waterfall.

Mediating role of community participation and benefit on factors influencing community-based tourism (CBT) development

ABSTRACT Community-based tourism (CBT) will enhance the development of remote areas, but CBT needs to be improved to overcome obstacles. This study investigates two dimensions of the problems. First, exploring the role of community participation as a mediator between factors and CBT development, and second, assessing the role of benefit as a mediator between community participation and CBT development. This quantitative study used face-to-face self-administrative questionnaires to gather data by the multistage sampling technique from CBT stakeholders, including community leaders, CBT operators, homestay owners, and villagers. Consequently, community participation mediates the relationships between three predictors and CBT development. Benefit plays a role as a mediator between community participation and CBT development. The contribution of this research to the body of knowledge is to suggest the potential factors and mediators driving successful CBT development.

Exploring the regenerative potential for community-based ecotourism in the Niah National Park in Sarawak, Malaysia

ABSTRACT Regenerative tourism has recently gained much attention, joining other regenerative ideas like regenerative agriculture, regenerative design, and regenerative development. It promotes value-driven approaches that prioritise community-based tourism development and aims to enhance local well-being by fostering alternative pathways. Concerns regarding the future of the tourism sector as well as its contribution to community empowerment have increased in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, particularly in the case of tourism-dependent and developing economies. In the context of the Niah National Park in Sarawak, Malaysia, this research note critically reflects on past and current development approaches and discusses regenerative tourism potentials.

Exploration of The Teaching and Learning Model Using the Design Thinking Method in Developing Community-Based Tourism

Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the tourism industry, leading to a shift towards community-based tourism. Therefore, new reality, innovative and effective teaching and learning models are needed for the communities. This study investigates the utilization of the Design Thinking method in the development of community-based tourism as a teaching and learning model following the COVID-19 pandemic. Theoretical framework: Literature in this study was based on design thinking method and its application on education and tourism. Method: Data were collected using in-depth interview and observation. 10 informants were approached and involved during the interview consisting of 6 students majoring in tourism management and 4 tourism stakeholders who had participated actively in community development. Results and conclusion: Overall, this study found that the design thinking method has proven to be an effective tool for solving complex problems and creating innovative solutions, and that its application in teaching and learning models for community-based tourism can help students develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills, encourage creative thinking, and foster a collaborative learning environment. Research implications: Design thinking method can help students develop important life skills such as teamwork, communication, and leadership, which are essential for success in both academic and professional settings. Originality/value: Innovative and original solutions for tourism services are fostered by the application of design thinking.

Community-Based Development of Tomohon City Center Tourism Area

Background: Tomohon City has various tourist areas that have the potential to be developed, in which the community's participation is required in the process. This study aims to determine the implementation of the concept of community-based tourism in an effort to develop tourism potential in the downtown area of Tomohon, and to formulate an appropriate community-based tourism development model. Methods: This study used a descriptive qualitative method with data collection through interviews, observation and documentation studies. Findings: The results of this study indicate that the development of the Tourism Area in Tomohon City Center has implemented the concept of community-based tourism which fulfills five aspects including the economic, social, cultural, environmental and political dimensions. Conclusion: The tourism development of Tomohon City is able to drive the wheels of the economy at all levels of society and has a direct impact on the welfare of the community, as well as being able to encourage the growth and development of culture and the environment around the Tomohon City Center Area. Practical Implications: The tourism development model with a community-based approach can be carried out through three stages, namely the initial stage, the middle stage, and the advanced stage.

Condescension or collaboration? Local people’s perspectives on the incorporation of indigenous knowledge in tourism development, Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe

The incorporation of indigenous knowledge in development projects has been promoted worldwide as a way of preserving the knowledge of indigenous people. Yet, there is a dearth of research on the perspectives of indigenous people on the incorporation of indigenous knowledge in tourism development. This study examines the potential of tourism incorporating indigenous knowledge systems in the rural communities of Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe. In-depth interviews were conducted with 43 local people in the four districts of the case study area as well as 22 key informants from different government departments involved with community-based tourism development in the country to enrich the data. Other qualitative research methods, including observations and informal conversations, were also used to collect data. Data was analysed through a six-phase thematic analysis. Based on the results of this study, it is concluded that tourism development does incorporate indigenous knowledge systems in rural communities of Manicaland Province, Zimbabwe. The results indicate that traditional leaders are recognized while local traditions and protocols are followed, and sacred sites are respected. Recommendations are given and areas for future research are suggested.

Pentahelix Model In Community-Based Tourism Development In Situbondo District

Community-based tourism is part of sustainable tourism development. Community-based tourism involves the community as the main actor in its management and aims to increase economic and industrial activities, preserve culture, and improve the economies of local communities. This research aims to describe the pentahelix model in community-based tourism development in Situbondo Regency, East Java. The research method used is qualitative research with a case study approach. The research data were collected from observations, interviews and documentation. The research data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively. The results showed that community-based tourism development in Situbondo Regency has involved collaboration among actors in the pentahelix model, namely local government, academics, industry and business, the community, and mass media. The local government acts as a regulator in formulating policies related to community-based tourism management. The community, as the manager of community-based tourism, prepares institutional planning and organization and builds cooperation with academics and businesses in developing innovation, knowledge and competence in human resources and business management. The mass media play a role in the promotion and marketing of community-based tourism. However, the cooperation between the actors in the pentahelix model has not been optimal, especially with the limited involvement of industry/business and mass media. There is a need to strengthen cooperation among actors and to strengthen the institutional capacity of the community as a manager of community-based tourism.

Community-Based Tourism Development in Kerangan Ecotourism Village, South Tangerang City

Community-based tourism development represents a facet of sustainable tourism. Keranggan Tourist Village's diverse potential attractions, facilities, and supportive communities are a prime example of an actively developing tourist village. While Keranggan applies community-based development principles, there is room for enhancement through more effective strategies. This research seeks to analyze the economic, social, and cultural dimensions of Community-Based Tourism (CBT) in the development of Keranggan Tourist Village. Drawing from reputable journals, the literature review method serves as the research approach. Economic indicators focus on implementing green entrepreneurship, while social indicators emphasize enhancing the performance of Pokdarwis. Cultural indicators encompass initiatives such as information exchange between local communities and guests, conducting comparative studies with other tourist villages, and providing tourism-related training for the community.

From the results of the analysis carried out, it was found that the village of Baros has strengths in terms of various natural conditions and cultural values. Community Participation Analysis in Community Based Tourism Development (PBM) in Pentingsari Tourism Village

This study aims to identify the geographical area of Pentingsari Village as a village that offers experiential tourism activities in the form of learning and interaction about nature, the environment, agriculture, plantations, entrepreneurship, socio-cultural life, various traditional arts, and local wisdom still profoundly rooted in the community with a typical rural atmosphere on the slopes of Mount Merapi. The study used qualitative data with two data sources, namely primary and secondary. Primary data comes from interviews and observations, while secondary data comes from various sources such as the web, journals, electronic media, social media, and other mass media. Data analysis techniques in this study use qualitative descriptive data analysis techniques. The results and conclusions show that the economic principles in Pentingsari Village have been fulfilled because the community already has local products that are proven to increase community income, have been managed by the residents themselves, and have been independent. The political principle has been fulfilled because the community has actively managed the tourism village, is responsive to the community's needs, and works together to overcome it. The level of power of the residents has fully managed the tourism village democratically.

Kolaborasi Pengembangan Pariwisata Pacu Jalur Berbasis Masyarakat di Kabupaten Kuantan Singingi

Currently tourism in Indonesia is growing very rapidly. The role of stakeholders is very necessary in planning a tourist destination because it can help to develop tourism potential in a village. This research focuses on discussing community based tourism development collaboration at Pacu jalur events in Kuantan Singingi Regency and what factors inhibit collaboration in community-based tourism development at Pacu jalur events in Kuantan Singingi Regency. The aim of this research is to find out how collaborative community based tourism development is at the pacu jalur event in Kuantan Singingi Regency and what are the inhibiting factors for collaboration in community based tourism development at the pacu Jalur event in Kuantan Singingi Regency using the pentahelix model of 5 stakeholders. This study used qualitative research is descriptive methods. This research found that the roles of each stakeholder are: academics focus on tourism planning based on existing theories, the government focuses on policy makers in developing tourism potential, business actors as nails in creating added value and maintaining economic growth in the surrounding area, and the role of the role of the community is to help manage tourism potential and the role of the media is to promote and help inform the wider community about the spur route. The research results found that collaborative governance has run quite optimally. The inhibiting factors in community-based tourism development collaboration were also revealed, namely, a) Lack of pentahelix coordinators in the development of Pacu jalur tourism, b) Lack of support for road infrastructure access in the development of Pacu jalur tourism, c) Low creativity and innovation at Pacu jalur tourism locations. Through this research, it can be used as an evaluation so that it can increase the efforts of the Department of Tourism and Culture in developing tourist attractions leading to national events.

Ethnic Minority Women and Tourism Development in Vietnam: Revisiting Social Capital and Cultural Construction

Vietnam has a diversity of ethnic minorities that participate in tourism enterprises. Despite gender bias, women play significant roles in this process. Using a case study approach, our aim was to examine social capital and cultural construction that occurs when ethnic women perform tourism-related work. Onsite observation, followed by in-depth interviews and document analysis were conducted at a farmstay and a community-based tourism development in rural Vietnam. Social capital consisted of bonding that emerged during the start-up phase and with individuals who acted independently, whereas bridging was evidenced through relationships between government and people. Acquisition of social capital is crucial if impoverished individuals want to improve their status in life. However, upward mobility must be balanced against ethnic/cultural identity and tourism revenue, especially during the post-COVID-19 era. This research contributes to the scant literature on empowering marginalized individuals and groups who work at rural tourism destinations across Asia Pacific.

INCREASING THE ROLE OF POKDARWIS IN HUTUMURI COUNTRY, SOUTH LEITIMUR DISTRICT, AMBON CITY

Community-based tourism development has become the best alternative in tourism management at the local level. Hutumuri Country is one of the customary countries in Ambon City that has the potential to develop community-based tourism. This PKM has the aim of increasing POKDARWIS's understanding of Objects and attractions, 4A, SAPTA PESONA, sustainable tourism, tourism villages, CHSE (Cleanliness, Healthy, Safety, Environment sustainability), and the realization of the role of POKDARWIS through Community-based tourism management in Hutumuri Country optimally and sustainably. The methods used are lecture and discussion methods, until PKM all pokdarwis members, and hutumuri state officials. The results of PKM showed a good and enthusiastic response from POKDARWIS in accepting PKM activities, the hasl was also seen from the pre-test results which only 10% understood and the post-test results showed a value of 100% understanding.

PENGEMBANGAN PARIWISATA EKONOMI KREATIF DALAM PENINGKATAN PAD BERBASIS PARTISIPASI MASYARAKAT LOKAL DI KABUPATEN KONAWE SELATAN

Community participation in tourism development is mainly related to forms of community participation, community motivation and the impacts of tourism development on local communities that need to be further optimized, with the basic premise that it is an effort to develop tourism by referring to the concept of community-based tourism development. The aim of this research is to describe the characteristics of creative economic tourism development that is based on active community participation so that it can increase Regional Original Income. This research uses a qualitative approach. The sampling technique was snowball sampling technique. The research population is the entire community in the South Konawe Regency area. Meanwhile, the sample taken as the main data source is people who actively carry out participation activities in the creative economy sector. The data collection techniques used were observation and interviews. Data collected from research results in the field were then analyzed descriptively qualitatively. The research results show that there is a link between Regional Original Income (PAD) and creative economic tourism, namely the presence of a new economic form that can become a source of the community's economy. If this is developed more professionally, it will become a new source of PAD for the South Konawe Regency government. The development of creative economic tourism based on local community participation has not run optimally, where the development of creative economic tourism still receives very little attention from the local government, especially the role of the government as a facilitator to provide facilities that are needed by creative economic actors, including training for actors to improve quality and productivity, providing production equipment for business actors, and assistance in accessing capital.

Measuring Communities’ Perceptions Towards the Socio-Economic Impact of Community-Based Tourism Development of Tourism Villages in Indonesia (Case from Bogor Regency, Indonesia)

Objective: The objective of this study is to examine the impact of community-based tourism (CBT) practices in Ciasmara Village, Bogor Regency, specifically focusing on the social and economic benefits to the community. The study aims to understand how traditional management of community-based tourism affects the local population and to identify potential differences in economic impacts between residents living near tourist sites and those residing farther away.
 
 Method: The research methodology employed a purposive sampling approach, selecting 210 respondents from the community. The study utilized various data analysis techniques, including average score calculations and analysis of variance (ANOVA). These methods were applied to assess the social and economic impacts of community-based tourism practices in Ciasmara Village.
 
 Result: The research findings indicate that the implementation of community-based tourism in Ciasmara Village has led to positive economic and social outcomes for the community. However, a noteworthy observation is the divergence in economic impacts between residents living in close proximity to tourist sites and those residing farther away. The study's analysis, conducted through techniques such as average score calculations and ANOVA, reveals these differences in the economic trends experienced by these two groups within the community.
 
 Conclusion: In conclusion, community-based tourism practices in Ciasmara Village have yielded positive economic and social effects on the local population. However, the study highlights disparities in economic impacts based on residents' proximity to tourist sites. This nuanced understanding underscores the importance of considering the geographical distribution of these impacts when planning and implementing community-based tourism initiatives. Such insights are crucial for ensuring equitable and sustainable development in rural areas, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies that address the specific needs and challenges faced by different segments of the community.
