Hybrid renewable/grid power systems, an essential for base transceiver station penetration in Rural Nigeria

The energy crisis in Nigeria has continued to impede the rapid expansion of the telecommunication industry, whose operating expenditure is galloping due to over-dependence on diesel generators as an alternative source of power to its base transceiver station (BTS). This fossil-fuel power source has also increased the industry’s carbon footprint. As a solution to these problems, the objective of this work is to provide a sustainable and quality hybrid DC power supply system for BTS that would increase access to information and communication technology or ICT infrastructure. This involves the integration of solar & wind energy with the grid. The sizing of the hybrid sub-systems was designed & simulated using MATLAB Simulink to test for functionality. A prototype of the design system was then implemented with the results showing an average power output that guarantees 21 hours/day of supply. By installing this hybrid system of 1.3 kW, approximately 2.55 kg of diesel (C10H20) would be un-utilized by one BTS, thereby preventing 3.6 kg of CO2 from been emitted to the atmosphere daily. Extrapolating these values shows 930.75 kg of diesel can be saved and reduce 1314 kg of CO2 emission within a year. Hence eliminating the need for diesel-backup generator for a grid connected or non-grid BTS sited in rural areas.

Digital technologies' impacts on alleviation of poverty: a bibliometric review

PurposeDigital technologies have been found to have long-lasting impacts on poverty. This study has been conducted to shed light on the contributions made by digital technologies toward poverty alleviation and also provide future research directions.Design/methodology/approachThe authors thoroughly studied the sample of 258 publications from the Scopus database, covering the period from 1982 to June 2023. Using VOS viewer and Bibliometrix R, various graphs and networks are developed to understand publication trends, research collaborations and intellectual structures.FindingsA significant amount of the existing literature on the impact of digital technologies on poverty alleviation demonstrates the need for more studies in this area. Lack of information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and access exhibits less opportunity for work, social networking and entrepreneurship, directly affecting people’s livelihoods in developing countries.Practical implicationsThis study will help country planners, regulatory bodies and academicians get a deeper insight into the impact of digital technologies on poverty alleviation and also develop the future research agenda.Originality/valueThis study employs a considerable period of time, from the year 1982 to June 2023. To the best of authors’ knowledge, the current study is a pioneer in using bibliometric analysis to identify the impact of digital technologies on the alleviation of poverty. This attempt will surely be helpful to academicians, researchers and those working on identifying the impact of digital technology on poverty alleviation.

Exploring the Feasibility of Deploying Technology Enhanced School-Based Teacher Continuous Professional Development in Internet-Limited Environments in Tanzania

In low-income countries, the use of technology to enhance teacher continuous professional development (TCPD) activities has been increasing significantly. However, most technology initiatives related to TCPD require the installation of complex information and communications technology (ICT) infrastructure in schools or availability of reliable Internet connectivity. While installation of ICT infrastructure is costly, the cost of the Internet is unaffordable to most teachers in low-income countries. This study explored the feasibility of deploying Raspberry Pi computers and tablets as micro-servers to facilitate school-based TCPD activities via a learning management system (LMS) without Internet connectivity. Teachers in eight schools in Dar es Salaam and Lindi accessed a TCPD sample module with Raspberry Pi and tablets providing hotspotting and treated as offline local servers hosting a LMS. After the trial, data was collected through focus group discussion, observation, and LMS logs involving 69 teachers. The findings showed that both Raspberry Pi and tablets could be used as micro-servers to provide access to learning resources in offline environments, but Raspberry Pi fared more favorably. Raspberry Pi was easy to set up and connected more devices than did the tablet. However, Raspberry Pi required careful handling as it is a delicate device. Interestingly, there was no significant difference in terms of the performance and cost of the two micro-servers. This study provided further evidence that both Raspberry Pi and tablets could be cost-effective approaches to deliver TCPD activities without installing complex ICT infrastructure or in areas with limited Internet connectivity.

Investigating the effects of ICT infrastructure on Malaysia’s economic growth: Insights from the Solow growth model

ABSTRACT Using annual data from 1970 to 2020, this study examines the effects of economic leadership, information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure, and financial development on long-term economic growth in Malaysia. To accomplish this, we employ the Kapetanios multiple breaks unit root test and the Saikkonen-Lütkepohl (SL) test for cointegration with breaks. We add to the body of knowledge on this topic by exploring the direct and indirect (moderating) effects of economic leadership and financial development on the ICT-growth nexus. We discover that poor leadership impedes economic advancement in Malaysia and that the expansion of the financial sector tends to enhance the growth-improving effects of ICT. Moreover, the effects of both financial and ICT developments on growth are contingent upon Malaysia’s economic leadership. As such, Malaysia should encourage competent economic leadership, financial development, and a comprehensive ICT infrastructure network to boost its long-term economic growth.

Toward a Sustainable Development of E-Commerce in EU: The Role of Education, Internet Infrastructure, Income, and Economic Freedom on E-Commerce Growth

The emergence of e-commerce reshaped the traditional trade models, also playing a significant role in meeting the UN sustainable development goals. According to the UN, sustained growth and social development must include resilient infrastructure, foster innovation, allow for better access to information and communications technology, and universal and affordable internet infrastructure. This study explores a multidimensional analysis of e-commerce development in the EU generated by the following factors: education, internet infrastructure, income, and economic freedom. We use an ARDL econometric model and Eurostat data. Additionally, we analyze the time responsiveness of e-commerce growth to changes in these factors. In the long run, our findings identify a stable and positive relationship between e-commerce and all these factors. However, in the short run, our results illustrate significant dynamics between two variables and e-commerce. Specifically, the level of internet access and the percentage of individuals who use the internet daily exhibit a positive short-run impact on e-commerce sales, with the system absorbing shocks within a short period. This research advocates for targeted policies that support innovation, fair competition, and consumer protection in the digital economy. This research provides valuable guidance for policymakers and stakeholders in improving the institutional framework to promote a sustainable development of e-commerce in the EU.

Influencing Factors of SME Export Performance: Focusing on the Mediating Effect of Utilizing B2B Cross-Border E-Commerce Platforms

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to identify factors that influence the export performance of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It primarily seeks to elucidate the mediating role played by business-to-business (B2B) cross-border e-commerce (CBEC). Design/Methodology – Following prior scholarly investigations, measurement factors influencing the export performance of SMEs through B2B CBEC were identified. Hypothesis testing was executed by structural equation modeling using Smart PLS 4.0 statistical software. Findings – This investigation demonstrated that the information and communication technologies (ICT) infrastructure and collaborative partnerships within supply chain management (SCM) significantly influence the export performance of SMEs. Furthermore, B2B CBEC was examined in terms of scalability, compatibility, and usability. As a result, it was found to play a mediating role in the impact of ICT infrastructure and SCM partnerships on export performance. Originality/value – This research highlights the crucial role of various factors in the establishment of a CBEC platform by SMEs. Specifically, the study emphasizes the importance of ICT infrastructures and SCM partnerships as pivotal elements affecting the export performance of SMEs. Furthermore, this study investigates the interplay between CBEC platforms and the influence of ICT infrastructure and SCM partnerships on SMEs’ export performance, with particular focus on factors such as scalability, compatibility, and usability. It underscores the capability of these platforms to effectively address challenges related to language barriers, ICT, order management, and logistics. Consequently, SMEs can attain efficient transaction performance without necessitating substantial additional resource investment.

Digital finance: a developing country perspective with special focus on gender and regional disparity

PurposeEven if digital financial services have a positive impact on financial inclusion, it creates a digital as well as gender divide within and across countries, creating regional disparity even within developing nations. Though pandemic has initiated digitalization of various services, there has been scanty research on whether digital transfer of income can improve digital financial inclusion in post-pandemic era, especially in developing countries. The purpose of the current study is to explain the regional disparity within developing countries from three regions East Asia Pacific, South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, using latest World Findex data, 2021.Design/methodology/approachThe author takes an instrumental variable approach to run bivariate probit model to find the factors that motivate the users to make digital payments.FindingsThe study observes that electronic transfer of wages, government transfers and remittances can motivate individuals to make use of digital mode of transactions and mobile. The practice of formal saving and borrowings are the prerequisites. However, this mechanism holds good for East Asia Pacific and not for South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, which are poor in information and communication technology infrastructure. Women are lagging behind men, but digital transfer of wages motivate them to make digital transaction.Practical implicationsDigitalization of all government services and provision of affordable mobile network and internet services are necessary for regions like South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. In East Asia Pacific region, data protection, data governance and better regulatory framework are required. Higher female labor force participation with digital transfer of wages and empowerment with smartphones are key to reducing the Gender gap.Originality/valueThe current study corrects for the possible endogeneity issue, which the extant literature has not paid attention to, and provides region-specific and gender-specific policy recommendations for an improved digital inclusion.

Spatial Patterns of Drone Adoption: Insights from Communities in Southern California

Most US cities have seen a rapid proliferation of Civilian drones in the past decade. This study applies spatial regression models to identify the potential spatial clustering of drone adoption and the effects of socioeconomic, Information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure, and land use characteristics, with a focus on the association between drone adoption and high-speed broadband coverage (which provides access to information and infrastructure for drone technology). Drone adoption exhibited a significant spatial clustering pattern, indicating spatial interaction in innovation adoption. The age, income, occupation, and land use characteristics significantly explained the drone adoption rate, while populations of color and communities with lower broadband coverage had lower drone adoption rates, indicating racial and ethnic disparities in innovation technology adoption. The underlying digital divide amplifies such disparities and requires the development of policy interventions to reduce inequality.

Impact of corruption control, free information flow, and ICT infrastructure on China's outward foreign direct investment

ABSTRACT This study examines the interplay between corruption control, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure, and free information flow, assessing their collective influence on China's Outward Foreign Direct Investment (OFDI). Based on unbalanced panel data on China's OFDI flows to 182 countries from 2005 to 2020, we find that improved corruption control measures and advanced ICT infrastructure in host countries significantly increase China's OFDI. Furthermore, a more robust information flow, facilitated by e-participation and a free press in the host country, enhances the positive influence of corruption control measures on attracting China's OFDI. Importantly, the beneficial effect of corruption control on China's OFDI is amplified when the host country has well-developed ICT infrastructure that supports e-participation. By elucidating the complex interplay between institutions, ICT, and international business activities, this study contributes novel insights into the understanding of ICT's role in socioeconomic development, particularly in the context of foreign investment.

This research aims to analyze the influence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure on the volume of card-based non-cash financial transactions in Indonesia from 2019 to 2021. This is a quantitative study. Data analysis in this research employs multiple regression with a fixed-effect model. The study utilizes panel data of longitudinal type, consisting of data on Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), Villages/Subdistricts Served by Internet, Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs), ATM/debit cards and credit cards, and non-cash financial transaction volume based on cards across 33 provinces in Indonesia as cross-sectional data, spanning a period of three (3) years from 2019 to 2021 as time-series data. Secondary data for this research were obtained from the Bank of Indonesia, the Central Bureau of Statistics, and the Financial Services Authority. The research findings conclude that Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), Villages/Subdistricts Served by Internet, Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs), ATM/debit cards, and credit cards simultaneously had a significant influence on the volume of card-based non-cash financial transactions as shown by the F-test results. While partially as shown by the result of the t-test. Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) and Villages/Subdistricts Served by Internet do not have a significant influence on the volume of card-based non-cash financial transactions. Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop Testbed of a Distributed Consensus Multi-Agent System Control under Deception and Disruption Cyber-Attacks

The impact of communication disturbances on microgrids (MGs) needs robust and scalable Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure for efficient MG control. This work builds on advances in the Internet of Things (IoT) to provide a practical platform for testing the impact of various cyber-attacks on a distributed control scheme for a Multi-Agent System (MAS). This paper presents a Controller Hardware-in-the-Loop (CHIL) testbed to investigate the impact of various cyber-attacks and communication disruptions on MGs. A distributed consensus secondary control scheme for a MAS within an MG cyber-physical system (CPS) is proposed. The proposed cyber-physical testbed integrates a real-time islanded AC microgrid on RT-Lab, secondary controllers implemented on single-board computers, and an attacker agent on another single-board computer. Communication occurs via a UDP/IP network between OPAL-RT and controller agents, as well as between the agents. Through meticulous experimentation, the efficacy of the proposed control strategy using the developed platform is validated. Various attacks were modeled and launched including deception attacks on sensors, actuators, and their combinations, as well as disruption attacks. The ramifications of both deception and disruption cyber-attacks on system performance are analyzed.

The paper concludes with implications for urban planners, policymakers, and technology developers, suggesting future research directions to bridge existing gaps and address emerging smart city trends.

Knowledge sharing strategies for improved service provision in the academic library at Delta State University Abraka Nigeria

The changes experienced in the digital era require academic library staff to constantly update, expand, and develop their skills in order to carry out their roles efficiently and remain relevant in the provision of services to clients. Consequently, academic libraries have been among the first organizations to adopt knowledge sharing as a means to enhance the provision of services to clients. Several studies on knowledge sharing in academic libraries have been conducted in recent years. However, the focus of these discussions has been on understanding the knowledge sharing practices in academic libraries, and on technology as a factor making knowledge sharing possible so as to improve service provision in this context. Delta State University (DELSU) has yet to develop, adopt and formalize adequate strategies for sharing knowledge so as to improve service provision. This article explores the barriers to knowledge sharing among staff at the DELSU library and suggests strategies to enhance knowledge sharing among staff for improved service provision. A mixed method research approach and case study research design were adopted. A census was conducted on the target population, consisting of the entire staff at the DELSU library, using questionnaires that comprised both open and closed ended questions, while seven heads of department from the various library sections were purposively sampled for the collection of data through interviews. Social exchange theory provided the underpinning for the study. The findings revealed a lack of effective knowledge sharing for service provision in the library. The absence of a knowledge sharing culture; the absence of information and communication technology tools and infrastructure; a lack of motivation; and inferiority and superiority complexes among staff hindered knowledge sharing, with concomitant repercussions for service provision in the library. Strategies for knowledge sharing among the staff for improved service provision were suggested.

Esports development ecosystem in Hong Kong: an application of a systems thinking literacy approach

ABSTRACT Academic debates have focused on whether esports should be classified as sport. To contribute to building a healthier esports industry, this study developed a holistic framework for examining the strengths and weaknesses of esports development in Hong Kong with a systems thinking literacy approach. By applying a systems thinking literacy approach, the ecosystem framework considered the interactions between the six macro systems: the technological system, social system, policy and legal system, education system, nongovernmental organisations system, and economic system (specifically, the esports industry). Hong Kong has a competitive advantage in information and communications technology infrastructure and a strong potential market for esports, but needs to improve the social image of esports, to implement policies to support the industry, to strengthen the education system, and to address a series of industry issues. Implications on esports ecosystem at international level are also discussed.

The impact of ICT infrastructure, technological innovation, renewable energy consumption and financial development on carbon dioxide emission in emerging economies: new evidence from Vietnam

PurposeThis study is intended to analyze the impact of information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure, technological innovation, renewable energy consumption and financial development on carbon dioxide emissions in emerging economies.Design/methodology/approachThe present study adopts the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) cointegration technique for the annual data collection of Vietnam from 1990 to 2020.FindingsThe results of the study unveil that renewable energy consumption, the interaction between renewable energy consumption and ICT infrastructure and financial development have significant predictive power for carbon dioxide emissions. In the long term, renewable energy consumption, export and population growth reduce CO2 emissions, whereas the interaction between renewable energy consumption and ICT infrastructure and financial development increases CO2 emissions, while ICT infrastructure does not affect emissions. In the short run, changes in ICT infrastructure contribute to carbon dioxide emissions in Vietnam. In addition, changes in renewable energy consumption, financial development, the interaction between ICT infrastructure and renewable energy consumption and population growth have a significant effect on CO2 emissions. Notably, technological innovation has no impact on CO2 emissions in both the short and long run.Originality/valueThe current study provides new insights into the environmental effects of ICT infrastructure, technological innovation, renewable energy consumption and financial development. The interaction between renewable energy consumption and ICT infrastructure has a significant effect on carbon dioxide emissions. The paper suggests important implications for setting long-run policies to boost the effects of financial development, renewable energy consumption and ICT infrastructure on environmental quality in emerging countries like Vietnam in the coming time.

Institutional Information Communication Technology Capacity influence on E-Learning Utilization for Instruction in Kenyan Universities

E-Learning is globally recognized as a significant strategy in improving relevancy, efficiency, costeffectiveness, and quality of higher education. The paper presents a discussion of Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure capacity influences on e-Learning utilization in instruction in Kenyan universities, with a view to determining strategies that universities employ to enhance e-Learning utilization. It opines that e-Learning has not been very popular as a method for instruction in universities, due to limited institutional ICT infrastructure capacities to fully implement e-Learning. The study used the mixed methods research design methodology to debate, reflect, critique, and discuss institutional capacities by universities in utilizing e-Learning in instruction. The reviewed different data sources, borrowed and immensely used government publications, e-Learning books, journals and research articles were used in document analysis. The researchers also used own intuitive experience and knowledge in e-Learning utilization in instruction. E-Learning utilization demands for collaborative effort between government, universities, faculty and students, as well us bodies like the Commission for University Education (CUE). It was found that there are several major barriers to institutional capacities of universities in utilizing e-Learning in instruction. First, was the procurement of technology and sourcing of funds. It was seen that the total capitation for funding the programs was as low as 3%. Secondly, internal barriers arising from within individual institutions and faculty. Majority of the universities for a long time have relied on face to face interaction between students and faculty. However, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, all learning institutions including universities, colleges and schools were forced to close down and seek alternative methods of instruction. It was found that most universities have moderate capacities to utilize e-Learning, but are yet to exploit its full potential. The study also established that nearly all the faculty were aware and used e-Learning for instruction but to a limited extent. Findings revealed that faculty prefer blended mode of instruction, but complained of limited bandwidths and poor connectivity for faculty and students far off from the university campuses. To mitigate the challenge, universities must strive to train and retrain the faculty on how to use technology and not about technology. Based on the review carried out in six universities; all the universities have some technologies in place including Computer Based Learning, Virtual Learning, video conferencing, content delivery via networks, use of memory sticks and emails. All have an e-Learning portal, module and platforms used for e-Learning. Majority of the university dons consider bandwidth, networking and a reliable Learning management system (LMS) as critical infrastructure for e-Learning utilization. Development and improved utilization of e-Learning is practically possible with enhanced institutional capacities. Enhanced use implies enhanced information transfer, reduced movement of faculty and students allow adequate time for faculty to invest in innovative teaching; enable faster transfer of information while students actively learn on their own. This would help bridge the gap and reduce pressure on existing resources. E-Learning could be the solution to the problem of increased student enrolment and reduced quality of university education. However, to ease the burden of financing university programs, public- private sector partnerships need to be encouraged. The study established that universities must provide students with affordable internet. To a large extent it delves into possible benefits and opportunities that would arise if universities realize and utilize fully the available institutional infrastructure and e-Learning resources. Demand is made upon the universities to develop and operationalize e-Learning policy and invest more in capacity building, set up infrastructure to deliver instruction online.

Technological Capabilities of A Higher Education Institution in Quezon Province: Basis for Organizational Competitiveness Framework

Technological advancement is consistently seen developing and evolving in such a fast phase which consequently brings challenges to a number of key players in the industry including that of the academe and higher education institutions – for which the same are thrusted to deliver quality education. With the ever-increasing development of technology and its integration into an organization’s systems and processes, a decision regarding its implementation and use is a challenge, more so on capabilities and opportunities brought about by these phenomena. One important consideration for a globally competitive higher education provider is technological transformation. This study dwelled on the technological capabilities of a Philippine higher education institution (HEI) located in the province of Quezon. A total of three hundred three (n=303) individuals consented to participate in the study. Furthermore, the imperatives on how higher education institutions can self-develop towards technological capacitation were explored, to support its mission and vision, and continue its delivery of teaching-learning amidst the volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity of the education industry. Specifically, the dimensions of information and communication technology infrastructure, technology adoption, human capital, investment innovation in technology, and innovative technology environment were conceptualized as basic tenets of technological transformation. The impact of these dimensions on organizational competitiveness was measured using partial-least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM). The practical implications of this study are to contribute to the theory and practice of technology in education and fill the gaps in the limited literature resources on technology transformation in education, particularly in the province of Quezon. Opportunities in emerging technologies for Southern Africa: How the Global South should adopt to take advantage?

AbstractThe manufacturing sector, energy sector, and mobility businesses can all benefit from the use of emerging technology. A crucial part of modernizing industries is utilizing emerging technologies. This research aimed to examine how the Global South can adopt and maximize emerging technology opportunities. The research was qualitative in nature, and the focus was on economies in the Global South. Random sampling to select 40 economies from the four continents that fall under the Global South which were Africa, Asia and the Pacific, the Arab Region, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Research articles on the subject matter were collected from Google Scholar and other online repositories. Document analysis was used under the data analysis section. This research aimed to examine how the Global South can adopt and maximize emerging technology opportunities. The research findings described challenges, such as poor technological policies, high prices, and taxation, a lack of financial resources, a lack of information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure and limited experts, digital illiteracy, and how illicit financial flows adversely affect the Global South's ability to tap into emerging technologies. In terms of policy recommendations, it was suggested that the Global South needs to design and implement robust ICT policies, mobilize financial resources, and invest in research and development. These policies must be implemented in the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors to ensure meaningful benefits of using emerging technologies.

Impacts of ergonomic risk factors on the well-being and innovation capability of employees in the manufacturing industry

Objectives. Although various studies have examined the relationship between ergonomic factors and employee well-being, the impacts of ergonomic factors on workers’ capability for innovation have not yet been studied in the manufacturing industry. This study advances understanding of the relationship between ergonomic risk factors and employees’ capability to innovate and to feel good at work in the manufacturing sector. Methods. The analysis uses the structural equation modeling technique based on cross-sectional data collected from 200 experienced workers in manufacturing industries using self-administered close-ended questionnaires. Results. Findings from this research show that the main ergonomic factors influencing the well-being and innovation capability of employees in the manufacturing industry are neutral awkward posture, psychological risk factors and effective utilization of information and communications technology infrastructures. Thus, ergonomic factors are significantly correlated to the innovation capability of employees. Conclusion. As there have been no studies addressing the integration of ergonomic risk factors and the capability for innovation of employees in the manufacturing industry, this study provides a unique contribution to the body of knowledge. Further research is also required to develop an in-depth understanding of the relationship among components of each ergonomic risk factor, and the well-being and innovation capability of employees.
