The weight of data: an analysis based on the impact on the environment

The carbon footprint generated by the information and communications technology (ICT) sector is increasingly significant, emitting greenhouse gases due to high energy consumption, regardless of the way in which energy is generated, the expansion and growth in data centers, as well as the impact generated by the cryptocurrency sector that in the end represents is reflected in greater consumerism, processing, storage, and transport of information that will be somewhere in the world. Current research addresses the problems and the contrast of figures in energy consumption due to the use of a computer, data processing, the role of the user as an internet consumer, the impact of data centers both in carbon footprint, water footprint and soil footprint, the impact of cryptocurrency mining and its contribution to global energy expenditure as well as the ethical debate of new technologies. And finally, the advances in seeking to optimize energy resources, sustainable and conscious for both consumers and service providers, show the trends focused on energy optimization through software and hardware based on a judicious review of research documents.

African Continental Free Trade Area and Regional Trade in ICT and Digital Technologies

This study examines the impact of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) on regional trade in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Digital Technologies (DT) sector across 43 African countries from 2014 to 2021. Employing the augmented gravity model and confidence-level estimations, it highlights AfCFTA's mediating role in enabling ICT&DT trade on the continent. Using hierarchical regression analysis of a panel dataset comprising 5,160 observations, the findings imply that trade openness and productive capacities not only facilitate trade in the ICT&DT sector but also result in positive spillover effects across various economic sectors. This study contributes to the international business literature by refining the application of the gravity model to capture the need for sector-specific analyses to unpack institutional dynamics and dis-enablers of trade. It identifies AfCFTA as a pivotal yet underexplored element in the global trade landscape, highlighting its potential as Africa seeks a more prominent role on the global stage. The research stresses the significance of digital empowerment and policy reforms to maximise the benefits of regional integration under AfCFTA.

Cloud-Based Accounting Information Systems and Financial Reporting Quality of Listed Information and Communication Technology Firms in Nigeria

The confluence of cloud-based Accounting Information Systems (AIS) adoption and financial reporting quality within Nigeria's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector is explored in this study. Given the dynamic landscape of the ICT industry characterized by technological advancements, evolving market dynamics, and regulatory shifts, ICT firms are increasingly turning to cloud-based AIS to streamline their accounting processes and adapt to changing business requirements. The population of the study consists of all eight (8) Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enterprises that are listed on the Nigerian Exchange Group as of 31st December 2022. As a result, this study delves into the impact of Cloud-Based AIS adoption on the Financial Reporting Quality of Listed ICT Firms in Nigeria over a decade-long period from 2013 to 2022. Utilizing a Panel Regression Technique (Random Effect Model), the study identifies a significant overall effect of Cloud-Based AIS on the Financial Reporting Quality of Listed ICT Firms in Nigeria. Moreover, it highlights the significant influence of Cloud Security Investment on financial reporting quality among ICT firms in Nigeria, while Cloud Expenditure Growth is found to have no statistically significant effect. The study emphasizes the need for strategic resource allocation and exploration of cost optimization opportunities, given that cloud expenditure growth may not directly impact financial reporting quality. However, the study recommends for prioritizing cloud security investments to safeguard financial data integrity, mitigate cybersecurity risks, and enhance trust in financial reporting practices, thereby bolstering investor confidence.

Information and communication technology and poverty alleviation in Nigeria

There is a disconnect between the abundant resources at the national level and the severe poverty at individual and household levels in Nigeria. Information and communication technology is an efficient tool that the Asian economies have used to alleviate poverty. Information and communication technology is regarded as a tool which helps create an information and communication technology-based economy. This quantitative study examined how Nigeria can use information and communication technology to alleviate the enormous poverty levels. Data were sourced from the World Bank and International Telecommunication Union, for the period 1992–2020. In terms of the research methodology, the Autoregressive Distributed Lag model was employed in the research. The empirical findings showed that information and communication technology can have a projected 50% positive effect in reducing poverty. Foreign direct investment had a positive effect on reducing income inequality. Primary research findings depicted that information and communication technology, economic growth, foreign direct investment and private domestic credit were key tools for reducing poverty in Nigeria. Concerning policy recommendations, it was suggested that private domestic credit and foreign direct investment should be channelled to the information and communication technology sector to have a greater impact on poverty alleviation.

Statistical analysis and open innovation in economic growth of scottish business SMEs for sustainable development

The propulsion of economic growth is a multifaceted construct, influenced by technology, capital, and resource management, with Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) being a significant contributors to innovation and employment. This study examines the growth of Scottish SMEs across four sectors over a 14-year period (2008–2021) by employing a novel statistical approach to understand their development trajectories within the framework of open innovation. The paper engaged in a longitudinal analysis to assess trends and inform policy for sustainable growth by the utilization of open-access data. Theoretical metrics such as the Average Growth Rate, Compound Average Growth Rate (CAGR), and Year-Over-Year (YoY) Growth were applied to evaluate sectoral performance. The findings revealed varied growth patterns; the information technology sector exhibited a robust increase, while the telecommunications sector showed significant percentage growth. Conversely, the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector experienced a decline that suggests a potential market gap. An affirmative trajectory in CAGR was observed in most sectors except ICT, which corroborates a shift in technological evolution and market needs. The study illuminates the dynamic economic landscape of Scottish SMEs, with telecoms emerging as the most prosperous sector in terms of growth rates, thus indicates a shifting economic focus. The study’s limitations are briefly discussed, in addition to the need for updated databases and further research employing predictive modeling with machine learning to enhance forecasting capabilities and foster open innovation for sustainable economic development.

PRODUCT INNOVATION, MARKETING INNOVATION AND BUSINESS PERFORMANCE RELATIONSHIP OF MALAYSIAN PRODUCT INDUSTRIES: MEDIATING EFFECT OF DESIGN MANAGEMENT

Due to the increasing significance of design management and innovation to business performance, it is critical for the product sectors to stay up with the world's rapid changes in economic model and technology. As a result, industrialized countries regard design management as a competency that falls under the umbrella of innovation management. The objectives of this study are to identify the relationship between product innovation and marketing innovation on the business performance of Malaysian product industries, to analyze the effect of product innovation and marketing innovation on design management of Malaysian product industries, to examine the effect of design management on the business performance of Malaysian product industries and to test the mediating effect of design management between innovation and marketing innovation. This study uses a mixed method of qualitative and quantitative research design to collect data from 386 respondents from Malaysia's product industries. Simple random sampling was utilized to acquire the required data using a verified questionnaire. Furthermore, the qualitative survey data was analyzed using the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Model (SmartPLS3-SEM) in early phase as back data for qualitative method and for qualitative concerns, the researcher is using Likert scale form for subject matter expert to validate the gathered data with the hypothesis based on the findings of this study to check on the validity of the data gathered. In accordance to this research, the researcher defines “Malaysian Product Industries” as a group of small and medium enterprises in the services, primary agriculture and Information & Communication Technology (ICT) sectors that are enterprises and private company with full-time employees not exceeding 50 or with annual sales turnover not exceeding RM5 million. This study presents empirical evidence that the effect of design management on the relationship between innovation types and business success in Malaysia's product industries could lead to increased company performance. This research could assist the product industries better their businesses by identifying critical factors that contribute to greater business performance.

Controlling Electron Spin to Realise a Greener Future

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector is consuming an ever-increasing amount of electricity. Most electronic devices are composed of billions of transistors, which are made of materials called semiconductors. Semiconducting devices can be engineered to hold properties that suit the device’s function. One relatively unexplored property is electron spin, which, if it can be controlled, may be manipulated to increase the efficiency of semiconducting devices, particularly regarding data transfer and storage. I want to examine whether spin polarisation (the degree to which the spin of electrons aligns with a given direction) can be controlled. This is achieved by understanding the electron-scattering processes by which electrons change their spin polarisation in time. THE PERCEPTION OF CORPORATE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: INVESTIGATING THE EMPLOYEE PERSPECTIVE

This paper endeavors to assess the overall level of employees’ perception of corporate sustainable development (CSD) across its three defining dimensions – economic, social, and environmental. Variations in the perceived significance based on individual and professional characteristics among employees are additionally identified. The research methodology involves conducting Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) based on the information collected from a survey distributed to employees of companies operating in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector within Romania’s Western region. The findings affirm a direct, restrictive and positive impact of employees’ socio-professional characteristics on their perception of CSD.

Open knowledge disclosure and firm value: a signalling theory perspective

ABSTRACT A growing number of firms are openly disclosing knowledge through academic journals and conferences; however, the impact of this practice on their market value needs further research. From a signalling theory perspective, we investigate the relationship between open knowledge disclosure and firm value and identify potential contingency factors. We propose that open knowledge disclosure conveys a firm’s technical capability and commitment to open science, consequently contributing to its market value. Drawing upon data from listed companies within China’s information and communication technology sector, we confirm that open knowledge disclosure enhances firm value. Furthermore, this enhancement is more pronounced for small firms, young firms, private firms, firms with few patents, firms drafting few technical standards, or firms operating in an immature technology market. Our findings suggest that firms, especially those facing high information asymmetry or lacking alternative signals, can increase their market value by sending positive signals through open knowledge disclosure.

Breaking the Glass Code : Mentorship-Driven Empowerment in Malaysia’s ICT Sector

This study explores the role of mentoring in advancing women’s careers in Malaysia's ICT sector, where women are underrepresented in leadership roles. This conceptual study is primarily centered on examining the role of mentorship in advancing women's careers in Malaysia's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. It examines societal, organizational, work-life balance, and individual factors influencing the career paths of women in the ICT sector in Malaysia. This study is significant in providing the importance of promoting diversity in the workforce, in line with the Sustainable Development Goal SDG 5 i.e. Gender Equality.

Collaboration Skills in Vocational Schools in The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Sector

In 2018, the technology, business and ICT (information and communication technology) sectors were the sectors that received the most new students at the vocational school level. Jobs in the ICT sector are one of the sectors that are really needed in Indonesia. There are more job vacancies in the ICT sector for vocational schools than for high schools. However, in the 2015-2019 period, the number of ICT sector workers with high school graduates was higher than vocational school graduates. The soft skill that is most needed in ICT sector jobs is collaboration. The main objective of this literacy study is to describe learning methods to improve collaboration skills in vocational high school students in the ICT field. Systematic literacy study using the PICOC framework is the method used. The results of this literacy study are in the form of descriptions related to: 1. The concept of collaboration; 2. Challenges and obstacles; 3. Learning activities to improve collaboration skills. It was found that problem-based learning (PBL) can improve collaboration abilities. To be suited to the world of work, it is necessary to integrate the Scrum model to develop vocational school students' collaboration skills in the field of ICT.

Emotional intelligence in leadership: Its role in fostering employee engagement in Palestine’s ICT sector

This paper aims to explore the nexus between leadership emotional intelligence and employee engagement within Palestine’s information and communication technology sector. It seeks to fill a research gap by highlighting the impact of leaders’ emotional intelligence on fostering a committed workforce. The study used a quantitative approach and a descriptive research design. Its target population was 5,281 full-time employees in Palestine’s ICT sector, and 328 employees were sampled through probability multistage random sampling. The sample was split into groups based on job types and companies with more than 50 employees. The study’s findings corroborate the hypothesized positive effect, with statistical analysis revealing that emotional intelligence directly influences employee engagement levels within the ICT context (Beta = 0.302; P-value = 0.000). Although highlighted as a crucial element, emotional intelligence is designated as only part of a complex engagement equation that requires further investigation into additional contributing factors, such as different dimensions of emotional processing. ICT sector electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions – 2020 outcome

The Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector has gained much attention in the discussions on climate change, as it could impact global emissions both positively and negatively. The objective of the present study is to provide estimates for the 2020 use stage electricity consumption and ICT sector's total lifecycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions divided in three main parts: user devices including internet-of-things, networks and data centers. The study builds on a high number of data sources including measured and reported data from 150 companies that is estimated to cover about 80% of network subscriptions, about 55% of data center electricity, and about 35% of upstream GHG emissions. To understand the development, the results are put into the perspective of earlier studies. In conclusion, the ICT sector used about 4% of the global electricity in the use stage and represented about 1.4% of the global GHG emissions in 2020. The use stage electricity consumption and the total GHG emissions have increased since 2015, but the impact per subscription has decreased. The user devices accounted for over half of all GHG emissions, with equal parts relating to use stage and other lifecycle stages. For networks and data centers, the use stage GHG emissions are dominating. The electricity consumption and GHG emissions are also estimated for the closely related areas Entertainment and Media (including e.g., TVs), paper media, and cryptocurrencies.

Influence of Parental Education on Decision-Making Factors for Choosing Fee-levying Higher Education Institutes among Computer Science Undergraduates in Sri Lanka

The choice of a fee-levying higher education institute (HEI) is critical for students as it can significantly impact their future. However, research indicates that the process students follow to select an HEI is complex and is carried out in several stages. Hence parents often become involved in the selection process to help their children make the right choice. With the rising number of fee-levying HEIs, the higher education sector has become highly competitive and institutes invest heavily in strategies to attract not only students but also parents. Furthermore, Sri Lanka’s growing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector has resulted in a rise in the enrolments of undergraduates majoring in computer science (CS). Hence, the main objective of this study was to determine if parental education influences the key determinants namely, internal characteristics of students, institute-specific factors, and communication methods used by HEIs, shaping Sri Lankan students’ choice of a fee-levying HEI for CS degrees. The study used a quantitative approach, and data was collected from 510 students studying at eight fee-levying HEIs using the survey method. The results of the study revealed that neither fathers’ nor mothers’ education has an impact on any of the three key determinants. Hence, HEIs can consider this outcome when formulating their student enrolment strategies. Further research is also suggested with samples that include a higher percentage of students having parents with higher education and parents of students from other disciplines besides CS before generalising this outcome to the higher education sector of Sri Lanka.

The impact of strategic thinking on organizational excellence: An empirical examination in Jordan’s ICT sector

This study empirically examines the impact of strategic thinking on organizational excellence in Jordan's Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector. Adopting a quantitative methodology, this study surveys a sample of 270 individuals drawn from various ICT companies across Jordan. Utilizing Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Partial Least Squares (PLS) for analysis, the study investigates the effects of different dimensions of strategic thinking on organizational excellence. The findings reveal that among the dimensions studied, dynamic and systematic thinking significantly and positively influenced organizational excellence. These results underscore the critical role that adaptive and methodical approaches to strategic thought play in enhancing organizational performance and competitiveness within the fast-paced ICT sector. The study not only contributes to the theoretical understanding of strategic thinking's relevance in organizational success but also offers practical insights for ICT companies aiming to achieve excellence in a dynamic business environment.

Assessing the negative impact of the it sector on the environment: a call for sustainable solutions

The article explores the negative impact of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector on the environment and offers recommendations to reduce this impact. The article highlights that while digital and environmental issues are major topics of public debate worldwide, they are rarely discussed together. The article uses a qualitative approach to assess the current impact of the ICT sector on the environment by reviewing relevant literature, analyzing data on the global impact of the sector, and considering measures to prevent the negative effects. The study reveals that while ICT can have positive effects on the environment, it also carries sources of threats, such as excessive consumption of resources for the production of devices, CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, changes in flora and fauna, and growing electronic waste. The article concludes by calling for manufacturers to use environmentally friendly materials and manufacturing processes to create products with high recycled content to reduce the environmental impact of the ICT sector.

THE DIGITAL ECONOMY PART OF THE INTERNATIONALIZATION OF THE LABOR MARKET. THE CASE OF ALBANIA

This study aims to analyze the impact of the digital economy on strengthening the labor market and its growth in Albania. In this analysis, we focus on the growth of the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector as a result of technological advancements and innovation in the country. Using official data from Albanian state sources, we identify the changes and challenges of the labor market in this context of digital transformation. Also, we research the policies and strategies undertaken by state institutions to improve the adaptation of the workforce to the demands of the digital economy sector. Through our analysis, we assess the role of training and skills development as well as their impact on increasing employment and innovation in Albania. Based on the results of the study, we conclude with concrete recommendations to improve existing strategies and policies in accordance with the needs of the digital economy sector and the workforce in Albania. In conclusion, we examine the future opportunities for the growth of the digital economy and the labor market in the country. The intercommunalization of digitalization is a trend for global economic development, a necessary part of the high-quality development of any business. The internationalization of digitization suggests that the principles of sustainability and digitization can and should be combined with each other to ensure business longevity. Artificial intelligence, quantum computing, brain-computer interface, digital transformation of enterprises, digital technology and digitization are gaining ground in global economic development.

The Nexus of Institutional Pillars and Service Innovation in Pakistan's ICT SME Sector: An Empirical SEM Analysis

Service innovation is a critical driver of economic growth and competitiveness in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, especially in developing countries like Pakistan. However, the full potential of the ICT sector innovation capacity remains unrealized due to the absence of adequate measures for evaluating and managing the factors that influence innovation, particularly institutional factors. SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) in Pakistan is empirically examined to determine the impact of institutional pillars on their ability to innovate service offerings. The study SEM to analyze data collected from 320 project managers of ICT SMEs in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad. The findings reveal that normative, and cognitive institutions have a significant positive impact on service innovation while the regulative pillar has an insignificant impact on ICT SMEs in Pakistan. The comprehensive institutional framework is also found to be positively correlated with service innovation. The findings from this study have important implications for Pakistani policymakers and SMEs in the ICT sector. Policymakers should focus on creating a supportive institutional environment that facilitates service innovation. ICT SMEs should also be aware of the institutional factors that influence innovation and develop strategies to mitigate the negative impact of institutional constraints.
