Two-Pass Weed Management Programs for Identity-Preserved Soybean

Weed management is a challenge in Identity-Preserved (IP) soybean in Ontario, Canada. Six experiments were established in southwestern Ontario, Canada during 2021 and 2022 to evaluate weed control and soybean yield with preemergence (PRE), early postemergence (EPOST), and PRE followed by (fb) late POST (LPOST) herbicide programs. At 8 weeks after LPOST herbicide applications, S-metolachlor/metribuzin, pyroxasulfone/sulfentrazone, and flumioxazin/metribuzin/imazethapyr applied PRE provided 7, 49, and 99% control of velvetleaf; 65, 98, and 100% control of green pigweed; 7, 8, and 82% control of common ragweed; 25, 68, and 98% control of common lambsquarters; 91, 77, and 89% control of barnyardgrass; and 62, 68, and 93% control of green foxtail, respectively. Imazethapyr + bentazon applied EPOST provided 91% control of velvetleaf; 91% control of green pigweed; 78% control of common ragweed; 95% control of common lambsquarters; 76% control of barnyardgrass; and 79% control of green foxtail. S-metolachlor/metribuzin, pyroxasulfone/sulfentrazone, and flumioxazin/metribuzin/imazethapyr applied PRE fb bentazon + fomesafen + quizalofop applied LPOST provided 61, 86, and 100% control of velvetleaf; 97, 99, and 100% control of green pigweed; 94, 88, and 99% control of common ragweed; 96, 98, and 100% control of common lambsquarters; 97, 95, and 97% control of barnyardgrass; and 97, 96, and 99% control of green foxtail, respectively. There was minimal and transient soybean injury (6% or less) with all PRE or EPOST herbicide treatments, however, S-metolachlor/metribuzin, pyroxasulfone/sulfentrazone, or flumioxazin/metribuzin/imazethapyr applied PRE fb bentazon + fomesafen + quizalofop LPOST caused up to 22% injury in soybean. Weed interference reduced soybean yield 40%. Weed interference with S-metolachlor/metribuzin and pyroxasulfone/sulfentrazone applied PRE reduced soybean yield 25 and 31%, respectively. Reduced weed interference with flumioxazin/metribuzin/imazethapyr applied PRE, imazethapyr + bentazon applied EPOST, and the two-pass programs of a PRE fb LPOST herbicide resulted in soybean yield that was similar to the weed-free control. This study concludes that there are many effective weed management programs in IP soybean; however, the two-pass weed control programs are recommended since they provide good to excellent weed control, minimize soybean yield loss from weed interference, and ensure the use of multiple herbicide modes of action which reduces the selection intensity for the evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds.

Management of Herbicide-Resistant Common Lambsquarters, Chenopodium album , in Atlantic Canada

Abstract Common lambsquarters ( Chenopodium album ) is one of the most troublesome annual broadleaf weeds in potato production in Atlantic Canada. Historically controlled by a combination of cultivation and herbicides, potato producers now often rely on a single herbicide application to provide season long control of common lambsquarters. The reliance on a few herbicides for common lambsquarters control has led to widespread incidence of herbicide resistance in this species, negatively impacting potato yield. This case study explores common lambsquarters’ biology, development of herbicide resistance, and the evolving management practices including chemical, cultural, and mechanical to help mitigate its impact on potato productivity. Effect of Class Act NG Adjuvant on Glyphosate Efficacy in Corn

There is little information on the effect of the co-application of glyphosate with Class Act NG adjuvant on weed control efficacy and corn yield under Ontario environmental conditions. This study consisted of 6 field experiments that were conducted in Ontario during 2021 and 2022 to determine if the addition of Class Act NG (2.5% v/v) to glyphosate at 450, 900 and 1350 g ae ha-1 would improve weed control and result in a concomitant increase in corn yield. The co-application of glyphosate with Class Act NG resulted in no visible corn injury at 1 and 4 weeks after herbicide application (WAA). The addition of Class Act NG to glyphosate at 450 g ae ha-1 improved control of common lambsquarters, velvetleaf, Powell amaranth, common ragweed, and barnyardgrass as much as 20, 14, 9, 8, and 7%, respectively but there was no improvement in control of giant foxtail, or green foxtail and there was no increase in corn yield. The addition of Class Act NG to glyphosate at 900 g ae ha-1 improved common lambsquarters control 6 and 5% at 4 and 8 WAA, respectively and improved barnyardgrass control 4% at 4 WAA. The addition of Class Act NG to glyphosate at 1350 g ae ha-1 provided no improvement in control of velvetleaf, Powell amaranth, common ragweed, common lambsquarters, barnyardgrass, giant foxtail, or green foxtail and there was no increase in corn yield. Based on this data the co-application of glyphosate with Class Act NG results in improved control of some annual broadleaf and grass weeds (common lambsquarters, velvetleaf, Powell amaranth, common ragweed and barnyardgrass) when glyphosate is applied at 450 or 900 g ae ha-1; however, when glyphosate is applied at 1350 g ae ha-1 there was no improvement in weed control. The addition of Class Act NG to glyphosate at 450, 900 and 1350 g ae ha-1 did not result in an increase in corn yield.

Ethofumesate applied at greater than labeled rates postemergence to sugarbeet

AbstractEthofumesate is a broad-spectrum, soil-applied herbicide used to control broadleaf and grass weeds in sugarbeet crops. Ethofumesate is commonly applied preemergence at rates ranging from 1.25 to 4.2 kg ai ha−1, or applied postemergence (POST), up to 0.38 kg ai ha−1. The Generic Crop Science company has developed a new Ethofumesate 4SC label that has increased ethofumesate POST rates up to 4.48 kg ha−1 in sugarbeet with more than two true leaves per plant. Field and greenhouse experiments were conducted in 2018 and 2019 to evaluate sugarbeet tolerance and herbicide efficacy. Field tolerance experiments indicated sugarbeet stature from ethofumesate applied POST at 0.28, 0.56, and 1.12 kg ha−1 was the same as that of the nontreated control, but ethofumesate at 2.24 kg ha−1 reduced sugarbeet stature, although that rate did not affect yield components. Ethofumesate applied POST at 4.48 kg ha−1 reduced sugarbeet stature and affected sugarbeet yield components. Ethofumesate applied alone POST provided weed control of up to 85%, 76%, and 84% on common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, and waterhemp, respectively, in field efficacy experiments. Mixing ethofumesate at 1.12 kg ha−1 with glyphosate does not provide a second effective herbicide for POST control of common lambsquarters or redroot pigweed, but it does provide residual control of these weeds when at least one-half inch of penetrating rainfall occurs, following application. In greenhouse experiments, ethofumesate alone or ethofumesate plus glyphosate applied to common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, or waterhemp at heights of less than 2.5 cm provided the best combination of burndown and soil residual control compared with weeds that were 2.5 to 5 cm tall. Ethofumesate applied POST at 1.12 kg ha−1 plus glyphosate provided the best combination of tolerance and efficacy, especially on waterhemp.

Preemergence herbicide premixes reduce the risk of soil residual weed control failure in corn

AbstractWidespread occurrence of herbicide-resistant weeds and more variable weather conditions across the United States has made weed control in many crops more challenging. Preemergence (PRE) herbicides with soil residual activity have resurged as the foundation for early season weed control in many crops. Field experiments were conducted in Janesville and Lancaster, Wisconsin, in 2021 and 2022 (4 site-years) to evaluate the weed control efficacy of solo (single site of action [SOA]) and premix (two or more SOAs) PRE herbicides in conventional tillage corn. Treatments consisted of 18 PRE herbicides plus a nontreated check. At the Janesville-2021 site, S-metolachlor + bicyclopyrone + mesotrione, atrazine + S-metolachlor + bicyclopyrone + mesotrione, and clopyralid + acetochlor + mesotrione provided >72% giant ragweed control. At the Janesville-2022 site, none of the PRE herbicides evaluated provided >70% giant ragweed control due to the high giant ragweed density and the lack of timely rainfall. At the Lancaster-2021 site, atrazine, dicamba, and flumetsulam + clopyralid provided <45% waterhemp control, but the remaining treatments provided >90% control. At the Lancaster-2022 site, the efficacy of some PRE herbicides was reduced due to the high waterhemp density; however, most herbicides provided >75% control. At the Lancaster-2021 and Lancaster-2022 sites, only dicamba and S-metolachlor did not provide >75% common lambsquarters control. Group 15 PRE herbicides provided >75% control of giant foxtail. Across weed species, PRE herbicides with two (78%) and three (81%) SOAs provided greater weed control than PRE herbicides with a single SOA (68%), indicating that at least two SOA herbicides applied PRE result in better early season weed control. The efficacy of the PRE herbicide treatments evaluated herein varied according to the soil seedbank weed community composition and environmental conditions (i.e., rainfall following application), but the premixes were a more reliable option to improve early season weed control in conventional tillage corn.

Effect of glufosinate rate and addition of ammonium sulfate on annual weed control in glyphosate/glufosinate/2,4-D–resistant soybean

AbstractThe development of glufosinate-resistant soybean cultivars has created opportunities for use of glufosinate applied postemergence for weed control. Four field experiments were conducted in 2021 and 2022 to ascertain the effect of glufosinate rate and the addition of ammonium sulfate on annual weed control in glyphosate/glufosinate/2,4-D–resistant soybean. An increased glufosinate rate of 500 from 300 g ai ha−1 improved control of common ragweed, common lambsquarters, redroot pigweed, and foxtail species and resulted in decreased density and dry biomass of common lambsquarters and foxtail species. The addition of ammonium sulfate to glufosinate increased control of common lambsquarters, 2 and 8 wk after application (WAA), and of foxtail species, 2, 4, and 8 WAA, but did not improve control of common ragweed and redroot pigweed. Increasing the dose of glufosinate from 300 to 500 g ai ha−1 improves control of common ragweed, redroot pigweed, common lambsquarters, and foxtail species; however, the benefit of the addition of ammonium sulfate to glufosinate is weed species-specific.

Effects of nozzle type and adjuvant selection on common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) and johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense) control using nicosulfuron in corn

AbstractWeed control in corn is a major challenge due to increasing problems with highly dominant weed species and herbicide resistance evolution. Common lambsquarters and johnsongrass constitute up to 80% to 90% of the weed population in many spring crops, such as soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.], sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.), and corn, in Serbia. Currently, acetolactate synthase–inhibiting herbicides, such as the systemic selective sulfonylurea nicosulfuron, are most commonly used for chemical weed control of those species. A better understanding of the impact of nozzle type and adjuvant use on nicosulfuron efficacy can help to improve control of common lambsquarters and johnsongrass and minimize herbicide resistance development. Field trials were conducted in Serbia from 2020 to 2022 to evaluate the impact of two adjuvants (a non-ionic surfactant [NIS] and a mineral fertilizer ammonium sulfate [AMS]) and two nozzle types (drift-reducing nozzles and flat-fan nozzles) on common lambsquarters and johnsongrass control using nicosulfuron. Satisfactory biomass reduction of common lambsquarters (83% to 87%) and johnsongrass (83% to 97%) was achieved after nicosulfuron application. Adding a NIS adjuvant increased the biomass reduction for common lambsquarters (94% to 98%) and johnsongrass (90% to 100%) independently of the nozzle type used. Selection of nozzle type did not show consistent effects on common lambsquarters and johnsongrass control. Nicosulfuron efficacy was increased with NIS adjuvant for both nozzle types compared to nicosulfuron solo for both species, and Extended Range (XR) TeeJet® nozzles on average resulted in a higher efficacy for common lambsquarters compared to Turbo TeeJet® induction. Adding a mineral AMS adjuvant resulted in lower biomass reduction for both nozzle types and weed species (65% to 78% and 61% to 91% for common lambsquarters and johnsongrass, respectively). Corn grain yield was predominantly influenced by annual meteorological conditions and adjuvant type added to nicosulfuron. This research suggests that addition of the non-ionic adjuvant is an essential factor for successful control of common lambsquarters and johnsongrass in corn and enables use of drift-reducing nozzles.

Influence of Glufosinate Rate, Ammonium Sulfate, and Weed Height on Annual Broadleaf Weed Control

Weed control efficacy with contact herbicides can depend on weed height at application. Four field experiments were conducted at sites with multiple weed species at different heights to determine the effect of weed height, glufosinate rate, and the addition of ammonium sulfate (AMS) on annual broadleaf weed control in soybean in southwestern Ontario, Canada, during 2021 and 2022. Glufosinate was applied at 300 or 500 g ai ha-1 without or with 6.50 L ha-1 of AMS to 5, 10, and 15 cm tall common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.), common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.), velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik.), and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus L.). Glufosinate provided excellent common ragweed control (> 98%) at both rates, without and with AMS, and at all three heights 4 weeks application (WAA). In contrast, glufosinate efficacy declined when applied to common lambsquarters, velvetleaf, and redroot pigweed > 5 cm in height. The addition of AMS to glufosinate improved common lambsquarters control. Increasing the rate of glufosinate to 500 g ai ha-1 and the addition of AMS improved control of velvetleaf and redroot pigweed. The results of this study demonstrate that the effect of glufosinate rate, AMS addition, and weed height at application timing is weed species-specific. In general, glufosinate (300 g ai ha-1) controlled common annual broadleaf weeds if weeds were < 5 cm in height; otherwise, glufosinate needed to be applied at 500 g ai ha-1 with AMS for control of annual broadleaf weeds, especially common lambsquarters, velvetleaf and redroot pigweed. 

Effective dose of atrazine required to complement tolpyralate for annual weed control in corn

AbstractTolpyralate is an herbicide that is usually mixed with atrazine for broad-spectrum weed control in corn. Previous research has provided information on the effective dose (ED) of tolpyralate applied alone and in a 1:33.3 mixture with atrazine; however, tolpyralate is commercially applied at a dose of 30 to 40 g ai ha−1 with a minimum of 560 g ai ha−1 of atrazine. Therefore, five field trials were conducted over 3 yr (2019 to 2021) to determine the ED of atrazine to complement 30 g ai ha−1 of tolpyralate to achieve 80%, 90%, and 95% control of seven weed species 2, 4, and 8 wk after application (WAA). Tolpyralate was applied alone and in a mixture with atrazine doses ranging from 50 to 2,000 g ai ha−1. At 8 WAA, the ED of atrazine for 95% control of velvetleaf, common ragweed, common lambsquarters, and wild mustard was below the minimum label dose of atrazine on the commercial tolpyralate label, ranging from 430 to 520 g ai ha−1, which supports the use of the minimum label dose of atrazine. In contrast, redroot pigweed required 1,231 g ai ha−1 of atrazine to complement tolpyralate for 95% control 8 WAA. At 8 WAA, barnyardgrass and a mixture of green foxtail and giant foxtail (Setaria spp.) were not controlled by 80%, 90%, or 95% with tolpyralate applied alone or co-applied with any dose of atrazine evaluated in this study. The results of this study conclude that tolpyralate + atrazine is highly efficacious on several weed species at atrazine doses of 40 to 130 g ai ha−1 below the label dose of 560 g ai ha−1, but the use of the higher dose of tolpyralate or another herbicide may be required to improve control of redroot pigweed and grass weed species.

Preemergence and postemergence spiny amaranth (Amaranthus spinosus) and common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) control in lettuce on organic soils

AbstractSuccessful weed management, particularly use of chemical control, is very important for commercial lettuce production on organic soils in the Everglades Agricultural Area in south Florida. Field experiments were conducted in 2016 and 2017 to determine the efficacy of herbicides (pronamide, bensulide, imazethapyr, or oxyfluorfen) applied preemergence (PRE) either alone or followed by a postemergence (POST) application of imazethapyr for weed control and lettuce (romaine and iceberg) yield. Preemergence-applied oxyfluorfen (0.56 kg ha−1) resulted in significant lettuce injury, including stand loss, while PRE applications of pronamide (4.44 kg ha−1), bensulide (5.6 and 10.1 kg ha−1), or imazethapyr (0.035 g ha−1) resulted in transient lettuce injury and no significant stand loss. Similarly, PRE-applied pronamide, bensulide, and imazethapyr followed by POST-applied imazethapyr did not result in significant lettuce stand loss or injury. When contrasted as a group, PRE-applied herbicides followed by a POST application of imazethapyr provided better spiny amaranth and common lambsquarters control compared with PRE-applied herbicides or POST-applied imazethapyr-only treatments. Lettuce yield was highest with PRE herbicides followed by POST imazethapyr compared with PRE herbicides or POST-applied imazethapyr-only treatments, indicating a yield benefit of having a PRE followed by POST herbicide weed control program in lettuce grown on organic soils. However, oxyfluorfen is not an option for lettuce on organic soils because of unacceptable stand reduction and crop injury. Whether to apply pronamide, bensulide, or imazethapyr PRE followed by a POST application of imazethapyr for broadleaf weed control in lettuce on organic soils depends on the species present, cost, and ease of application.

Weed Control With Preemergence Herbicides in Azuki Bean

Three field experiments were completed over a three-year period (2019 to 2021) in Ontario, Canada to develop weed management programs in azuki bean with herbicides (pendimethalin, S-metolachlor, halosulfuron, and imazethapyr) applied alone and in combination, and metribuzin, applied preemergence (PRE). At 2 and 4 weeks after emergence (WAE), there was ≤ 8% azuki bean injury from the herbicide treatments evaluated, with the exception of the treatments that included S-metolachlor which caused up to 19% azuki bean injury. Pendimethalin (1080 g ai ha-1) and S-metolachlor (1600 g ai ha-1) controlled green foxtail 83-94% but provided poor control of common lambsquarters, wild mustard, redroot pigweed, common ragweed, and flower-of-an-hour. Imazethapyr (75 g ai ha-1) controlled common lambsquarters, wild mustard, redroot pigweed, and flower-of-an-hour 90-100% but provided 76-82% control of common ragweed and green foxtail. Halosulfuron (35 g ai ha-1) controlled wild mustard 100%, common ragweed 81-84%, common lambsquarters 77-83%, flower-of-an-hour 72-75%, redroot pigweed 59-72%, and green foxtail 19-23%. The tankmix of pendimethalin + S-metolachlor controlled green foxtail and common lambsquarters 87-97% but the control was only 23- 83% on wild mustard, redroot pigweed, common ragweed, and flower-of-an-hour. The tankmixes of pendimethalin + imazethapyr and pendimethalin + S-metolachlor + imazethapyr provided 90-100% control of common lambsquarters, wild mustard, redroot pigweed, flower-of-an-hour, and green foxtail, and 78-87% control of common ragweed. The tankmixes of pendimethalin + halosulfuron and pendimethalin + S-metolachlor + halosulfuron controlled common lambsquarters and wild mustard 91-100%, green foxtail 76-95%, flower-of-an-hour 70-94%, redroot pigweed 68-91%, and common ragweed 78-79%. Metribuzin (280 g ai ha-1) controlled common lambsquarters, wild mustard, redroot pigweed, common ragweed, flower-of-an-hour, and green foxtail up to 94, 98, 81, 58, 98, and 61% respectively; control improved to 99, 100, 97, 84, 99, and 83%, respectively when the rate was increased to 560 g ai ha-1. Generally, weed density and dry biomass reflected the level of weed control. Weed interference reduced azuki bean yield by 91% in this study. Generally, azuki bean yield reflected the level of weed control.

Interaction between 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase–inhibiting and reactive oxygen species–generating herbicides for the control of annual weed species in corn

AbstractThe complementary modes of action of 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase (HPPD) and photosystem II (PSII) inhibitors have been credited for the synergistic weed control improvement of several species. Recent research discovered that reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and subsequent lipid peroxidation is the cause of cell death by the glutamine synthetase inhibitor glufosinate. Therefore, a basis for synergy exists between glufosinate and HPPD inhibitors, but the interaction has not been well reported. Four field experiments were conducted in Ontario, Canada, in 2020 and 2021 to determine the interaction between HPPD-inhibiting (mesotrione and tolpyralate) and ROS-generating (atrazine, bromoxynil, bentazon, and glufosinate) herbicides on control of annual weed species in corn (Zea mays L.). The ROS generators were synergistic with the HPPD inhibitors and provided ≥95% control of velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik.), except for tolpyralate + glufosinate, which was additive at 8 wk after application (WAA) and provided 87% control. Tank mixes of HPPD inhibitors plus ROS generators were synergistic for the control of common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.), except for tolpyralate + glufosinate, which was antagonistic at 8 WAA. Tolpyralate + glufosinate was antagonistic for the control of barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.] and Setaria spp. at 8 WAA. Common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.) control at 8 WAA was synergistic and ≥95% with mesotrione plus atrazine, bromoxynil, or glufosinate and with tolpyralate plus bromoxynil or bentazon. Herbicide tank mixes were generally additive for the control of wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) at 8 WAA, except for the synergistic tank mixes of tolpyralate plus atrazine or bromoxynil; however, each tank mix provided 97% to 100% control of S. arvensis. Results from this study demonstrate that co-application of ROS generators with mesotrione or tolpyralate controlled all broadleaf weed species >90% at 8 WAA, with the exceptions of A. artemisiifolia and C. album control with tolpyralate + glufosinate. Mesotrione plus PSII inhibitors controlled E. crus-galli and Setaria spp. 48 to 68 percentage points less than tolpyralate plus the respective PSII inhibitor at 8 WAA; however, mesotrione + glufosinate and tolpyralate + glufosinate controlled the grass weed species similarly.

Enhancement of Tolpyralate + Bromoxynil Efficacy With Adjuvants in Corn

The most effective adjuvant is often herbicide-specific and dependent on the target weed species. Tolpyralate is a 4-hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase-inhibiting herbicide that is usually tank-mixed with atrazine for improved weed control in corn (Zea mays L.). Previous research has reported that a methylated seed oil (MSO) adjuvant (MSO Concentrate®) enhances the efficacy of tolpyralate + atrazine on several annual broadleaf and grass weed species. The efficacy of tolpyralate can also be improved with the addition of bromoxynil instead of atrazine; however, there is no information in the peer-reviewed literature that tests the efficacy of tolpyralate + bromoxynil with different adjuvants. Therefore, four field trials were conducted in 2020 and 2021 in Ontario, Canada to evaluate the efficacy of tolpyralate + bromoxynil without an added adjuvant and with MSO Concentrate®, Agral® 90, Assist® Oil Concentrate, Carrier®, LI 700®, or Merge® on six annual weed species in corn. The adjuvants did not enhance control of wild mustard (Sinapis arvensis L.) or velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik.) with tolpyralate + bromoxynil. At 8 weeks after application (WAA), common ragweed (Ambrosia artemisiifolia L.) control was improved with the addition of MSO Concentrate® or Merge® to tolpyralate + bromoxynil. At 8 WAA, all adjuvants enhanced the control of common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.) with tolpyralate + bromoxynil similarly except for Assist® Oil Concentrate; Merge® was a better adjuvant than Assist® Oil Concentrate for common lambsquarters control. At 8 WAA, control of barnyardgrass [Echinochloa crus-galli (L.) P. Beauv.] was enhanced with the addition of Assist® Oil Concentrate, Carrier®, MSO Concentrate®, or Merge® to tolpyralate + bromoxynil. Carrier®, MSO Concentrate®, and Merge® enhanced the efficacy of tolpyralate + bromoxynil on Setaria spp. at 8 WAA. Control of velvetleaf, wild mustard, common ragweed, Setaria spp., and barnyardgrass with tolpyralate + bromoxynil was similar with the six adjuvants evaluated at 8 WAA.

Enhancement of tolpyralate + atrazine efficacy with adjuvants

AbstractTolpyralate is commonly mixed with atrazine for improved control of common annual weed species in corn production systems in the United States and Canada. Weed control efficacy with this mixture is enhanced with the addition of methylated seed oil (MSO) Concentrate®; however, there is little information on the efficacy of tolpyralate + atrazine with other proprietary adjuvants. Therefore, four trials were conducted at field research sites in Ontario, Canada, to evaluate the efficacy of tolpyralate + atrazine when applied with six different commercially available adjuvants on four annual broadleaf and two annual grass weed species in corn. The adjuvants evaluated were MSO Concentrate®, Agral® 90, Assist® Oil Concentrate, Carrier®, LI 700®, and Merge®. A treatment of tolpyralate + atrazine applied with no adjuvant was also included in the study. For the control of velvetleaf and wild mustard, the adjuvants evaluated with tolpyralate + atrazine did not improve control. At 8 wk after application (WAA), the use of Agral® 90, Assist® Oil Concentrate, Carrier®, MSO Concentrate®, or Merge® with tolpyralate + atrazine provided similar or greater control of common ragweed than tolpyralate + atrazine applied with LI 700®. At 8 WAA, the adjuvants performed similarly with tolpyralate + atrazine for the control of common lambsquarters; however, LI 700® was the only adjuvant that did not improve control compared to tolpyralate + atrazine applied without an adjuvant. At 8 WAA, MSO Concentrate®, Carrier®, and Merge® improved control of barnyardgrass and foxtail species with tolpyralate + atrazine to a similar or greater level than Assist® Oil Concentrate, Agral® 90, and LI 700®. Overall, MSO Concentrate®, Carrier®, or Merge® should be added to tolpyralate + atrazine for control of the myriad of weed species interfering with corn production.

Economics of herbicide programs for weed control in conventional, glufosinate, and dicamba/glyphosate‐resistant soybean across Nebraska

AbstractDespite widespread adoption of dicamba/glyphosate‐resistant (DGR) soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in Nebraska and across the United States in recent years, economic information comparing herbicide programs with glufosinate‐resistant (GLU‐R) and conventional soybean is not available. The objectives of this study were to evaluate weed control efficacy, crop safety, gross profit margin, and benefit/cost ratios of herbicide programs with multiple sites of action in DGR, GLU‐R, and conventional soybean. Field experiments were conducted in 2018 and 2019 at three irrigated and two rain‐fed locations across Nebraska, for a total of 10 site‐years. Herbicides applied pre‐emergence (PRE) that included herbicides with three sites of action provided 85–99% control of common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.), Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Watson), velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Medik.), and a mixture of foxtail (Seteria spp.) and Poaceae species. Pre‐emergence herbicides evaluated in this study provided 72–96% weed biomass reduction and 61‒79% weed density reductions compared with the nontreated control. Herbicides applied post‐emergence (POST; dicamba plus glyphosate, glyphosate, glufosinate, and acetochlor plus clethodim plus lactofen) provided 93–99% control of all weed species 28 d after POST (DAPOST). Herbicides applied POST provided 89–98% weed biomass reduction and 86–96% density reduction at 28 DAPOST. For individual site‐years, yield was often similar for PRE followed by POST herbicide programs in herbicide‐resistant (HR) and conventional soybean. Gross profit margins and benefit/cost ratios were higher in HR soybean than in conventional soybean, although price premiums for conventional soybean can help compensate for increased herbicide costs.

Weed control and crop safety in sulfonylurea/glyphosate-resistant soybean

A soybean trait resistant to sulfonylurea herbicides along with glyphosate (Bolt™ soybean) has been developed. Information is needed to determine herbicide programs for weed control and crop safety in this new multiple herbicide–resistant soybean trait. The objectives of this study were to evaluate weed control and crop safety in sulfonylurea/glyphosate-resistant soybean with herbicide programs, including but not limited to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors. Field experiments were conducted near Clay Center, NE, USA, in 2016 and 2017. Herbicide programs with multiple sites-of-action including rimsulfuron/thifensulfuron in mixture with flumioxazin, flumioxazin/chlorimuron, pyroxasulfone, chlorimuron/metribuzin, or saflufenacil/imazethapyr plus dimethenamid-P provided 91%–97% control of common waterhemp, velvetleaf, and common lambsquarters. Rimsulfuron and (or) thifensulfuron resulted in 92%–97% control of velvetleaf and common lambsquarters and 81%–87% common waterhemp control at 21 d after pre-emergence (PRE) (DAPRE) herbicide application. Soybean injury was transient and varied from 3% to 11% at 21 DAPRE and 14 d after post-emergence (POST) (DAPOST) herbicide application without causing yield loss. At 30 and 60 DAPOST, 87%–97% velvetleaf control and 92%–98% common lambsquarters control was achieved with herbicide programs tested (PRE, POST, or PRE followed by POST). Common waterhemp control at 30 and 60 DAPOST was not consistent between years. Weed density and biomass reduction were mostly similar to weed control achieved. Untreated control resulted in the lowest soybean yield (1811 kg ha−1) in 2016 compared with 3406–4611 kg ha−1 in herbicide programs.

Efficacy of Trifluralin Compared to Ethalfluralin Applied Alone and Co-Applied with Halosulfuron for Weed Management in White Bean

There are a limited number of herbicides registered for weed management in white bean production in Ontario, Canada. Five field experiments were completed in Ontario from 2016 to 2018 to compare the efficacy of trifluralin and ethalfluralin applied alone and in combination with halosulfuron, applied preplant incorporated (PPI), for weed control efficacy and white bean tolerance and seed yield. At 2 and 4 WAE, there was no white bean injury from the herbicide treatments evaluated. Trifluralin applied PPI provided up to 32%, 99%, 13%, 99%, 27%, 99% and 99% control of velvetleaf, redroot pigweed, common ragweed, common lambsquarters, wild mustard, barnyardgrass and green foxtail, respectively. Trifluralin and ethalfluralin provide similar control of velvetleaf, redroot pigweed, barnyardgrass and green foxtail control, however, ethalfluralin is slightly more efficacious on common ragweed, common lambsquarters and wild mustard. Halosulfuron (35 g∙ai∙ha−1), applied PPI, provided as much as 76%, 98%, 96%, 96%, 100%, 19% and 23% control of velvetleaf, redroot pigweed, common ragweed, common lambsquarters, wild mustard, barnyardgrass and green foxtail, respectively. Trifluralin (600 or 1155 g∙ai∙ha−1) + halosulfuron (35 g∙ai∙ha−1), applied PPI, provided up to 88%, 100%, 98%, 100%, 100%, 99% and 98% control of velvetleaf, redroot pigweed, common ragweed, common lambsquarters, wild mustard, barnyardgrass and green foxtail, respectively. Ethalfluralin (810 or 1080 ai∙ha−1) + halosulfuron (35 g∙ai∙ha−1) provided similar control. Weed interference decreased white bean seed yield 44% - 45% with trifluralin, 30% - 41% with ethalfluralin and 34% with halosulfuron. However, decreased weed interference with trifluralin and ethalfluralin applied in combination with halosulfuron resulted white bean seed yield that was similar to the weed-free control. Trifluralin or ethalfluralin co-applied with halosulfuron can be safely used in white bean production for the control of common annual grass and broadleaf weeds in Ontario.

Efficacy evaluation of tribenuron methyl herbicide by using different adjuvants for common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album L.) control

Environmental risks resulting from increasing application of herbicides have raised many concerns about human health and safety of agro ecosystems and environment. Hence, it is very important to find practical and effective methods for reducing the use of pesticides in environment as well as the increasing the efficiency of these compounds. Addition of adjuvants to spray solutions could be considered as one of these methods. Greenhouse studies were conducted using a complete randomized design with a factorial arrangement during 2015-2016 to evaluate the impact of different adjuvants (citogate, canola oil, and castor oil) at concentrations of 0.1 and 0.2 (%v/v) with 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40 g a.i. ha-1 of tribenuron methyl herbicide to control common lambsquarters. Results showed that all applied adjuvants enhanced the efficacy of tribenuron methyl in decreasing the biomass of common lambsquarters. Efficacy of this herbicide increased with enhancing its concentrations. The required dose of herbicide to give 50 per cent common lambsquarters control (ED50) for no adjuvant, citogate, castor oil, and canola oil application (0.2 (%v/v)) was 21.24, 11.48, 11.65, and 11.81 g a.i. ha-1, respectively. Totally the application of citogate and canola oil had the highest and the lowest impact on tribenuron methyl performance to control of common lambsquarters respectively. Also, the Relative Potency values were significantly increased when adjuvants were added to this herbicide. The results revealed that the use of citogate and vegetable oils can increase the efficiency tribenuron methyl, and reduce the application rate of this herbicide in agro ecosystems.

Influence of application timing and herbicide rate on the efficacy of tolpyralate plus atrazine

AbstractEffective POST herbicides and herbicide mixtures are key components of integrated weed management in corn; however, herbicides vary in their efficacy based on application timing. Six field experiments were conducted over 2 yr (2017–2018) in southwestern Ontario, Canada, to determine the effects of herbicide application timing and rate on the efficacy of tolpyralate, a new 4-hydroxyphenyl pyruvate dioxygenase inhibitor. Tolpyralate at 15, 30, or 40 g ai ha−1in combination with atrazine at 500 or 1,000 g ai ha−1was applied PRE, early POST, mid-POST, or late POST. Tolpyralate + atrazine at rates ≥30 + 1,000 g ha−1provided equivalent control of common lambsquarters and Powell amaranth applied PRE or POST, whereas no rate applied PRE controlled common ragweed, velvetleaf, barnyardgrass, or green foxtail. Common ragweed, common lambsquarters, velvetleaf, and Powell amaranth were controlled equally regardless of POST timing. In contrast, control of barnyardgrass and green foxtail declined when herbicide application was delayed to the late-POST timing, irrespective of herbicide rate. Similarly, corn grain yield declined within each tolpyralate + atrazine rate when herbicide applications were delayed to late-POST timing. Overall, the results of this study indicate that several monocot and dicot weed species can be controlled with tolpyralate + atrazine with an early to mid-POST herbicide application timing, before weeds reach 30 cm in height, and Powell amaranth and common lambsquarters can also be controlled PRE. Additionally, this study provides further evidence highlighting the importance of effective, early-season weed control in corn.

Annual weed management in isoxaflutole-resistant soybean using a two-pass weed control strategy

AbstractTransgenic crops are being developed with herbicide resistance traits to expand innovative weed management solutions for crop producers. Soybean with traits that confer resistance to the hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase herbicide isoxaflutole is under development and will provide a novel herbicide mode of action for weed management in soybean. Ten field experiments were conducted over 2 years (2017 and 2018) on five soil textures with isoxaflutole-resistant soybean to evaluate annual weed control using one- and two-pass herbicide programs. The one-pass weed control programs included isoxaflutole plus metribuzin, applied PRE, at a low rate (52.5 + 210 g ai ha−1), medium rate (79 + 316 g ai ha−1), and high rate (105 + 420 g ai ha−1); and glyphosate applied early postemergence (EPOST) or late postemergence (LPOST). The two-pass weed control programs included isoxaflutole plus metribuzin, applied PRE, followed by glyphosate applied LPOST, and glyphosate applied EPOST followed by LPOST. At 4 weeks after the LPOST application, control of common lambsquarters, pigweed species, common ragweed, and velvetleaf was variable at 25% to 69%, 49% to 86%, and 71% to 95% at the low, medium, and high rates of isoxaflutole plus metribuzin, respectively. Isoxaflutole plus metribuzin at the low, medium, and high rates controlled grass species evaluated (i.e., barnyardgrass, foxtail, crabgrass, and witchgrass) 85% to 97%, 75% to 99%, and 86% to 100%, respectively. All two-pass weed management programs provided 98% to 100% control of all species. Weed control improved as the rate of isoxaflutole plus metribuzin increased. Two-pass programs provided excellent, full-season annual grass and broadleaf weed control in isoxaflutole-resistant soybean.
