Effects of adding n-amyl alcohol, dimethylfuran to fuel on soot formation in aviation kerosene diffusion flame

As the main energy consumption of aviation and aerospace, the study of combustion characteristics of aviation kerosene is of great significance. In this paper, through the self-built experimental system, the combustion flame characteristics of pure aviation kerosene, aviation kerosene mixed with n-amyl alcohol, aviation kerosene mixed with dimethylfuran were studied under different working conditions, and the physicochemical properties of soot particles generated in the flame, and the effects of mixing n-amyl alcohol and dimethylfuran on the formation of soot particles were analyzed from the microscopic perspective. The results show that: 1. The soot particles in the combustion of aviation kerosene mixed with n-amyl alcohol and dimethylfuran show some characteristics of amorphous structure, unclear outline and incomplete curing; 2. Under K-D20 condition, nitrates are included in particulate matter generated by soot; 3. After mixing n-amyl alcohol and dimethylfuran, the degree of graphitization continues to decrease.

Effect of ferrocene as a combustion catalyst on the premixed combustion flame characteristics of Jatropha biodiesel

Fuel additives are widely used to optimize the combustion process, reduce the harmful emissions, and improve the performance of engines. Among the metal-based additives, ferrocene is soluble in most fuels, including biodiesel. Furthermore, it is easily available and has high stability, low toxicity, and high lipophilicity. It can evenly disperse in biodiesel without causing any change in the physicochemical properties. Therefore, it can serve as an effective combustion catalyst for biodiesel. In this study, the effect of ferrocene as a combustion catalyst on the pyrolysis and combustion performance of Jatropha biodiesel is investigated. The coupled technique of thermogravimetry-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-mass spectrometry (TG-FTIR-MS) is used to analyze the evolution characteristics of multicomponent gaseous products generated during the pyrolysis and high-temperature oxidation of Jatropha biodiesel (JB100) and Jatropha biodiesel + ferrocene (JBF). The laminar premixed combustion flame and pollutant emissions of JB100 and JBF are examined using a variety of techniques, including OH planar laser-induced fluorescence (OH-PLIF), flue gas analysis, spectral analysis, transmission electron microscopy, etc. The results reveal that after adding ferrocene, the activation energy for the pyrolysis reaction of JB100 decreases by 4.66 kJ/mol and the complete weight loss temperature decreases by 10 ℃. Further, the addition of ferrocene reduces the endothermic heat by 0.38 mW/mg during the initial stage of the high-temperature oxidation reaction of JB100, and the amounts of final products CO2 and H2O are increased. Compared with JB100, JBF shows an enhanced OH group intensity in the combustion flame and a lower soot spectral peak. Furthermore, compared with JB100, under JBF combustion, the pollutant PM2.5 emissions decrease by 13.3 %, PM10 emissions decrease by 13.2 %, PM> 10 particulate matter emissions decrease by 19.3 %, CO emissions decrease by 6.8 %, NOx emissions increase by 21.2 %, and the size of soot particles decreases by 20.8 %.

Effect of oxidation on the combustion flame characteristics of Jatropha biodiesel

This study investigated the effect of oxidation on the pyrolysis and combustion flame performance of Jatropha biodiesel. To analyze the escape characteristics of multi-component gas products during the pyrolysis and high-temperature oxidation processes of fresh and oxidized Jatropha biodiesel, the TG-FTIR-MS combined system was employed. In addition, various analytical equipment such as an OH-PLIF system, a flue gas analyzer, a spectral analyzer, and a transmission electron microscope were employed to examine the laminar premixed combustion flame and pollutant emissions of Jatropha biodiesel before and after oxidation. The results demonstrate that oxidation exhibits a nonlinear effect on the thermal decomposition of Jatropha biodiesel. Notably, the reaction activation energy exhibits an initial increase and followed by a decrease. Moreover, an increased oxidation degree led to a reduction in the activation energy of the high-temperature oxidation reaction of Jatropha biodiesel, without considerably affecting the total weight loss temperature. Furthermore, the peak temperatures of DTG and DSC exhibited a minor decrease. The production of C2, CH, and OH free radicals in the combustion flame of oxidized Jatropha biodiesel increased, along with an elevation in the spectral intensity of carbon smoke. With an increase in the degree of oxidation, the CO emission concentration from the combustion of Jatropha biodiesel decreased gradually from 75 mg/m3 to 36 mg/m3 after 6 h of oxidation. Additionally, NOx emissions gradually increased from 131 mg/m3 to 186 mg/m3 after 6 h of oxidation, and the particle size of carbon smoke exhibited a reduction of 28%.

Time-varying evolutionary mechanism analysis of the multiphase flow during high-velocity oxygen-fuel (HVOF) thermal spraying WC-12Co particle

HVOF thermal spraying with the fuel of aviation kerosene has unique advantages for spraying WC-12Co ceramic particles. The time-varying evolution mechanism of the multiphase flow formed by the particles wrapping with the combustion flame flow is quantitatively revealed, which is essential for preparing of high-quality coatings. In this study, the breakup and gasification process of kerosene droplet was considered. The fuel droplet, flame flow and spraying particles were directly coupled. Based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method, a transient evolution model of HVOF thermal spraying multiphase flow with JP5000 spray gun was established. The Euler-Lagrange method of bidirectional coupling was used to track the continuous and discrete phases. The spraying combustion flame characteristics were expressed by the realizable k-ε turbulence model and eddy dissipation model (EDM). The results show that the multiphase coupling transient evolution model quantitatively captures the nonlinear changes of the breaking and gasification for the kerosene droplet, combustion reaction, particle flight behavior and others during spraying. The kerosene droplets in the combustion chamber aggregate with each other to form large droplets, which are rapidly broken and gasified in the peripheral areas. Due to the violent combustion, a gas-phase circulation was formed by the heat and cold air. As the combustion progresses, the flame flow becomes stable and orderly. When particles with a size of 20 to 30 μm impact the substrate, the particle temperature is close to the solid phase temperature, and the velocity is fast. The particle temperature and velocity decrease with the increase of the particle size.

Laminar Flame Characteristics of Sequential Two-Stage Combustion of Premixed Methane/Air Flames

AbstractDue to their high load flexibility and air-quality benefits, axial (sequential) stage combustion systems have become more popular among ground-based power gas turbine combustors. However, inert combustion residuals passing from the initial stage onto the secondary stage affects the reactivity and stability of the flame in the second stage of the combustor. The present study investigates laminar flame characteristics of the combustion within the second stage of a sequential combustor. The method of constant pressure for spherically expanding flames was employed to obtain laminar burning velocities (LBV) and burned gas Markstein lengths (Lb) of premixed methane/air mixtures diluted using flue gas at 3 bar and 423 K. Combustion residuals were imitated using a 19.01% H2O + 9.50% CO2 +71.49% N2 mixture by volume, while tested dilution ratios were 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%. Experimental results showed that the LBV was decreased by 18–23%, 36–42%, and 50–52% with additions of 5%, 10%, and 15% combustion products, respectively. As the dilution and equivalence ratios increased, the Lb values increased slightly, suggesting that the stability and stretch of the CH4/air flames increased at these conditions. Numerical results were obtained from CHEMKIN using the GRI-Mech 3.0, USC Mech II, San Diego, HP-Mech, NUI Galway, and AramcoMech 1.3 mechanisms. The GRI-Mech 3.0 and HP-Mech performed best, with an average of 2% and 3% difference between numerical and experimental LBVs, respectively. The thermal-diffusion, dilution, and chemical effects of inert postcombustion gases on the LBV were found using numerical results. The dilution effect was primarily responsible, accounting for 79–84% of the LBV reduction.

Effect of the water on the flame characteristics of methane hydrate combustion

An in-depth study of the combustion characteristics and mechanism of methane hydrate is necessary for its safe storage and transportation and for providing high efficiency in combustion applications. To investigate the mechanistic action of water on the combustion characteristics, a combustion experiment with a methane hydrate sphere was carried out. The action law of the physical state of water on the flame was qualitatively investigated, and the methane to water vapor mass ratio and the rate of gas release during combustion were quantitatively determined. In addition, a chemical dynamics simulation was carried out using a hedging flame model in CHEMKIN software. The influencing mechanism of water vapor on the combustion flame characteristics was analyzed. Combustion experiments revealed that the methane hydrate sphere exhibits good flame morphological stability during the fierce combustion phase. The accumulation of a water film promotes methane bubbles and accelerates the evaporation of water during the unstable combustion phase, leading to flame instability. The self-protection effect significantly influenced the gas release rate, thereby affecting the flame characteristics. The simulation results revealed that, on the one hand, the addition of water vapor significantly changed the reaction process of some elementary reactions (chemical effect), which led to a decrease in flame temperature. On the other hand, the concentration of the intermediate element components was also decreased (physical effect), exhibiting an inhibitory effect on the combustion rate.

Abstract: Under part load condition of spark-ignition engine, pumping loss had great effect on engine efficiency. To reduce pumping loss, the study designed spark-ignited engines to make direct spray of gasoline to combustion chamber. In spark-ignited direct-injection engines, ignition probability is important for successful combustion and flame propagation characteristics are also different from pre-mixed combustion. This study designed a visualization testing device to study ignition probability of spark-ignited direct-injection LPG fuel and combustion flame characteristics. This visualization device consists of combustion chamber, fuel supply system, air supply system, electronic control system and data acquisition system. Ambient pressure, ambient temperature and ambient air flow velocity are important parameters on ignition probability of LPG-air mixture and flame propagation characteristics, and the study also found that sprayed LPG fuel can be directly ignited by spark-plug under proper ambient conditions. To all successful cases of ignition, the study recorded flame propagation image in digital method through ICCD camera and its flame propagation characteristics were analyzed.

Combustion of Pure, Hydrolyzed and Methyl Ester Formed of Jatropha Curcas Lin oil

The density and viscosity of vegetable oil are higher than that of diesel oil. Thus its direct combustion in the diesel engine results many problems. This research was conducted to investigate the flame characteristics of combustion of jatropha curcas lin in pure, hydrolyzed and methyl ester form. The results indicated that the combustion of pure jatropha curcas lin occurs in three stages, hydrolyzed in two stages and methyl ester in one stage. For pure jatropha curcas lin, in the first stage, unsaturated fatty acid burned for 0.265 s. It is followed by saturated fatty acid, burned for 0.389 s in the second stage. And, in the last stage is the burned of glycerol for 0.560 s. Meanwhile for hydrolyzed one, in the first stage, unsaturated fatty acid burned for 0.736 s, followed by saturated fatty acid, burned for 0.326 s in the second stage. And the last, for methyl ester is the burned for 0.712 s. The highest burning rate was for methyl ester which was 0.003931cc/s. The energy releasing rate of methyl ester, which was for 13,628.67 kcal/(kg.s) resembled that of diesel oil the most, while the lowest rate was for pure jatropha curcas lin which was 8,200.94 kcal/(kg.s). The combustion of magnesium particles in water vapor is of interest for underwater propulsion and hydrogen production. In this work, the combustion process of a single magnesium particle in water vapor is studied both experimentally and theoretically. Combustion experiments are conducted in a combustor filled with motionless water vapor. Condensation of gas-phase magnesia on the particle surface is confirmed and gas-phase combustion flame characteristics are observed. With the help of an optical filter and a neutral optical attenuator, flame structures are captured and determined. Flame temperature profiles are measured by an infrared thermometer. Combustion residue is a porous oxide shell of disordered magnesia crystal, which may impose a certain influence on the diffusivity of gas phases. A simplified one-dimensional, spherically symmetric, quasi-steady combustion model is then developed. In this model, the condensation of gas-phase magnesia on the particle surface and its influence on the combustion process are included, and the Stefan problem on the particle surface is also taken into consideration. With the combustion model, the parameters of flame temperature, flame diameter, and the burning time of the particle are solved analytically under the experimental conditions. A reasonable agreement between the experimental and modeling results is demonstrated, and several features to improve the model are identified.

Spray and combustion of waste cooking oil biodiesel in a compression-ignition engine

An experimental study was carried out to compare the spray and combustion characteristics of waste cooking oil biodiesel with those of conventional diesel in a common-rail direct-injection compression-ignition engine. The indicated mean effective pressure of approximately 0.7 MPa was tested under an engine speed of 800 r/min. The fuels were injected at an injection timing of −5 crank angle degree after top dead center with injection pressures of 80 and 160 MPa. The experiments were performed to investigate the combustion and emission characteristics in a metal engine, while spray and combustion flame characteristics in an optical engine. The morphological and compositional features of particulate matter were also analyzed by using transmission electron microscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. The direct imaging of the spray indicated a longer injection delay for waste cooking oil biodiesel. However, it exhibited longer liquid penetration length and narrower spray angle than diesel as the spray developed. Waste cooking oil biodiesel combustion showed a longer ignition delay with a slightly lower peak of in-cylinder pressure and heat release rate than diesel due to the deteriorated atomization and evaporation of fuel spray. In terms of emission, waste cooking oil biodiesel showed benefits in reduction of carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbon and particulate matter emissions. The particulate matter from waste cooking oil biodiesel was composed of smaller primary particles and more volatile organic fraction than diesel soot. The combustion flame imaging verified the retarded combustion phase of waste cooking oil biodiesel. Waste cooking oil biodiesel combustion showed lower flame luminosity accompanied by shorter visible flame duration, at both injection pressures. The flame spatial fluctuation and flame nonhomogeneity were also lower for waste cooking oil biodiesel.

As advantages of LPG-DI engine, LPG is directly injected into combustion chamber during compression stroke to reduce compression temperature, prevent knock and spontaneous combustion, and adjust engine output using the amount of directly injected fuel, thereby reducing pumping loss caused by throttle valve. Stratified charge can be supplied nearby spark plugs to allow for overall lean combustion, which improves thermal efficiency and can cope with problems regarding emission regulations. In addition, it is characterized by free designing of intake manifold. Despite the fact that LPG-DI has many advantages as described above, there is lack of detailed investigation and study on spray characteristics, combustion flame characteristics, and ignition probability. In this study, a visualization experiment system that consists of visualization combustion chamber, air supply control system, emission control system, LPG fuel supply system, electronic control system and image data acquisition system was designed and manufactured. For supply of stratified charge in the combustion chamber, alignment of injector and spark plugs was made linear.

Experimental study on velocity characteristics of recirculation zone in humid air non-premixed flame

To examine the effect of the flow field within the recirculation zone on flame structure, the characteristic velocity fields of methane/humid air flame in non-premixed combustion behind a disc bluff-body burner were experimentally studied by particle image velocimeter (PIV).The results show that two stagnation points exist on the centerline in the recirculation zone flame. However, the distance of the two stagnation points in humid air combustion shortens, and the minimal dimensionless velocity increases compared with the conventional nonhumid air combustion. In addition, the positional curves of the minimal velocities can be partitioned into three phases representing three different flame patterns. The analysis of axial minimal velocities on the centerline and their positions under different co-flow air velocity conditions reveals that fuel-to-air velocity ratio is the crucial parameter that governs humid air combustion flame characteristics.
