Effects of Lime, Inorganic Fertilizer and Compost as Amendment on Soil Chemical Properties: Field Experimental Approach to Reclaim Acidic Nitisol, South Western Ethiopia

Soil acidity is a series problem in south western part of Ethiopia due to high rain fall that aggravate the concentration of toxic elements like Al3+ and Fe2+. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of lime with different fertilizer sources on soil chemical properties at Seka chekorsa area. Seven different treatments were applied with randomized complete block design along three replications. The study pointed out the response of soil pH (5.01) which was increased by 91.8% when compared to control plot (4.60), H+(0.25 cmol/kg), Al3+(0.19 cmol/kg), Exchangeable Acidity (0.44 cmol/kg), Available Potassium (1.96 Cmol/kg) and CEC (22.76 Cmol(+)/Kg) were attained significantly different result at (p<0.05) on CompL treated plot. However, OC (2.14%) and OM (3.69%) were attained the highest result on HCHNP and TN (0.1%) and Available K (2.00Cmol/kg) was significantly different at (p<0.05) on HCHNPL treated plot. The combined application of compost with lime was better than other combination including solely applied treatments to enhance different soil chemical properties in most of soil parameters. The integration of lime with organic and inorganic nutrient sources generally increased soil pH when compared with sole applied and control plot. Finally, the Integration of full recommended compost and Lime of agriculture could be promising alternative to amend acidic nitosol.

Effect of Compost, Blended (NPSZn), and Potassium Chloride Fertilizers on Soil Bulk Density and Moisture Content in Two Soil Textural Groups of Tigray, Northern Ethiopia

The growing needs for agricultural production require maintaining and improving soil fertility through fertilization. However, most research to date in Ethiopia particularly in the Tigray regional state has focused on the effects of soil chemical properties and relatively little work has been done on soil physical properties. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of compost, blended (NPSZn), and potassium chloride (KCl) fertilizers on soil bulk density (BD) and moisture content (SMC). Therefore, a field experiment was carried out for 2018-2019 years to study the influence of sole and combined application of compost, NPSZn, and KCl fertilizers on BD and SMC in clay loam and loamy sand soil textures in Tigray. Two compost (0 and 20 t·ha−1), three NPSZn (0, 60, and 120 kg·ha−1), and four KCl (0, 120, 210, and 300 kg·ha−1) rates replicated three times were arranged in split-split plot design and allocated to main, sub, and sub-subplots, respectively. BD (g·cm−3) and SMC (%) data were collected from 0 to 10 and 0 to 30 cm soil depths before and after harvesting in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Sole and combined application of the fertilizers considerably influenced BD and SMC in both soil textural groups and years. Compost applied in combination with NPSZn at 120 kg·ha−1 and KCl at 300 kg·ha−1 significantly reduced BD (1.24 g·cm−3 in 2018 and 1.22 g·cm−3 in 2019) in clay loam soils as compared to all treatments. Similarly, the lowest BD (1.5 g·cm−3 in 2018 and 1.47 g·cm−3 in 2019) was observed in loamy sand soils. The highest volumetric SMC (21% in both years) was observed in clay loam soil in plots treated with compost. Likewise, the highest SMC (12% in 2018 and 11% in 2019) was found in loamy sand soils in compost-treated plots. This study demonstrated that SMC and BD can be improved through compost and compost combined with NPSZn and KCl application, respectively, in the drylands of Northern Ethiopia.

Compost and humic acid amendments are a practicable solution to rehabilitate weak arid soil for higher winter field pea production

Arid soils are often weak, low in fertility, and lack essential plant nutrients. Organic amendments might be a feasible solution to counter the detrimental impact and rehabilitate weak arid soil for the growth of legumes. The study aimed to investigate how organic amendments of compost and humic acid may affect winter field pea productivity in arid soil. Over 2 years of field experiments, a range of treatments were applied, including different amounts of compost and humic acid. The results showed higher microbial carbon (C), and nitrogen (N) biomass, root length, shoot length, grains pod−1, and grain yield of pea, gained from the collective application of 8 Mg ha−1 compost and 15 kg ha−1 humic acid compared to all other treatments. Organic amendments increased soil microbial C density by 67.0 to 83.0% and N biomass by 46.0 to 88.0% compared with the control. The combined application of compost and humic acid increased soil microbial N biomass by 57.0 to 60.0% compared to the sole applications of compost-only and humic acid-only. It was concluded that organic amendments of 8 Mg ha−1 compost and 15 kg ha−1 humic acid in arid soil modulated microbial density, resulting in improved winter field pea productivity. This study suggests organic amendments of compost and humic acid might be a practicable solution to rehabilitate weak arid soil to grow legumes.

Effect of Biochar and Compost Addition on Mitigating Salinity Stress and Improving Fruit Quality of Tomato

To overcome food security, sustainable strategies for reclamation and the subsequent utilization of salt-affected soils for crop production are needed. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the impacts of compost and biochar addition on the growth and fruit quality of tomato under salinity stress. For this purpose, the soil was spiked with analytical grade sodium chloride to achieve a 6 dS m−1 salinity level for a pot experiment. After 30 days of spiking, the compost (2%) and biochar (2%) were added in selected pots. After the seedling transplant, recommended doses of NPK were added to fulfill nutrient requirements of tomato plants. Plants were harvested after 90 days of seedling transplantation. Results revealed that the salinity caused a significant reduction of 28.4% in SPAD value, 23.5% in Ft, 22.6% in MSI, 12.1% in RWC, 18.3% in Chl. a, 13.7% in Chl. b, and 16.5% in T. Chl. as compared to the un-amended non-saline control in physiological attributes of tomato plants. Similarly, a significant decrease of 26.9–44.1% was obtained in growth attributes of tomato as compared to the non-saline control. However, in saline soil, the addition of biochar and compost (alone or together) demonstrated a significant improvement in plant growth (i.e., up 45%) over the respective un-amended control. Moreover, the combined application of compost and biochar significantly reduced the sodium (Na+) in shoots and roots of tomato plants by 40% and 47%, respectively, over the respective control. Our findings suggest that the combined application of biochar and compost could be useful to reduce salinity, alleviate salinity-induced phytotoxicity, and subsequently improve plant growth and productivity in salt-affected soil.

Fertilizer perspective of biochar and compost derived from biomass of Parthenium hysterophorus in the rice wheat system in Punjab, Pakistan

Parthenium hysterophorus is an invasive weed, produces a lot of non edible biomass that is hazardous to humans. This study provides an insight to its beneficial use by converting the biomass into value-added materials like compost and biochar and subsequent amendment in soil as fertilizer. The biochar was prepared in a locally fabricated charcolator while the compost was prepared in a rolling tumbler. Two-year field experiment was set up using different combinations of biochar (BC), compost (C) and commercial fertilizer (CF) in the rice-wheat cultivation system in Lahore, Pakistan to assess soil health and crops performance after characterizing the products using advanced analyses. GCMS analysis has revealed the presence of stigmasterol and campesterol (plant growth promoters) in prepared compost. Field data showed that the combined application of compost and biochar in rice and wheat fields significantly improved the characteristics of soil like SOM and CEC. Agronomic characteristics such as the number of grains per tiller, grain weight and biological yield were significantly higher in C + CF (half dose of each) and almost equal to CF in the first year. In the second year, both crops agronomic performance was considerably more evident and pronounced following the same pattern. All other agronomic features also followed the same pattern. Thus, mixed application of organic and inorganic fertilizer on recurrent basis is recommended to improve yield of wheat and rice along with soil amelioration in the rice wheat cultivation system.

Collaborative Impact of Compost and Beneficial Rhizobacteria on Soil Properties, Physiological Attributes, and Productivity of Wheat Subjected to Deficit Irrigation in Salt Affected Soil.

Plant growth and crop productivity under unfavorable environmental challenges require a unique strategy to scavenge the severely negative impacts of these challenges such as soil salinity and water stress. Compost and plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) have many beneficial impacts, particularly in plants exposed to different types of stress. Therefore, a field experiment during two successive seasons was conducted to investigate the impact of compost and PGPR either separately or in a combination on exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), soil enzymes (urease and dehydrogenase), wheat physiology, antioxidant defense system, growth, and productivity under deficient irrigation and soil salinity conditions. Our findings showed that exposure of wheat plants to deficit irrigation in salt-affected soil inhibited wheat growth and development, and eventually reduced crop productivity. However, these injurious impacts were diminished after soil amendment using the combined application of compost and PGPR. This combined application enhanced soil urease and dehydrogenase, ion selectivity, chlorophylls, carotenoids, stomatal conductance, and the relative water content (RWC) whilst reducing ESP, proline content, which eventually increased the yield-related traits of wheat plants under deficient irrigation conditions. Moreover, the coupled application of compost and PGPR reduced the uptake of Na and resulted in an increment in superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and peroxidase (POX) activities that lessened oxidative damage and improved the nutrient uptake (N, P, and K) of deficiently irrigated wheat plants under soil salinity. It was concluded that to protect wheat plants from environmental stressors, such as water stress and soil salinity, co-application of compost with PGPR was found to be effective.

Sustaining maize yields and soil carbon following land clearing in the forest–savannah transition zone of West Africa: Results from a 20-year experiment

Sustainable alternatives to slash-and-burn shifting cultivation in the (sub)humid tropics rely on the use of external nutrient inputs to address soil fertility decline. The use of organic inputs is widely accepted as a practice to improve soil fertility, in particular soil organic carbon (SOC). On the other hand, its combined use with mineral fertilizer has the potential to maintain or increase crop productivity through positive interactive effects between both resources. Few studies have investigated these effects in the long term. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate whether maize productivity and soil SOC can be sustained under permanent cropping with sole and combined use of compost and mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizer. Here, we report results from a long-term experiment carried out in Gagnoa, Ivory Coast, from 1971 to 1990. The experiment followed a randomized block design comprising eight replicates of 12 treatments. The two studied factors were compost (0 or 10 t DM ha−1 yr−1) and mineral N (0, 40, 80, 120, 160 or 200 kg N ha−1 yr−1) additions. Average maize grain yields of the first cropping cycles were significantly lower without compost (5.05 ± 1.57 t ha−1) than with compost addition (6.07 ± 1.31 t ha−1). The annual yield variability as shown by the standard deviation of the mean was reduced by 20% with compost addition. Without compost, 53% of the initial SOC stock in the 0–20 cm soil layer was lost, resulting in a SOC loss rate of − 0.62 t C ha−1 yr−1 compared to 21% with compost (−0.27 t C ha−1 yr−1). Compost addition therefore reduced SOC loss with an apparent SOC storage rate of 0.35 t C ha−1 yr−1. The conversion rate of organic carbon (OC) inputs to SOC was about 12%. The Introductory Carbon Balance Model (ICBM) reproduced well SOC dynamics, especially without compost. Without mineral N and without compost, maize grain yield decreased with decreasing SOC concentration until the introduction of leguminous crops in the second cropping cycle. We conclude that combined application of compost with mineral N fertilizers was effective at maintaining maize productivity but inadequate to prevent the decline of SOC stocks, despite large additions. Leguminous crops in the rotation were key for maize productivity, but probably due to effects non-related to supplementary N supply.

Integrated Use of Biofertlizers with Organic and Inorganic Phosphorus Sources Improve Dry Matter Partitioning and Yield of Hybrid Maize

ABSTRACT Phosphorus (P) unavailability and lack of organic matter in calcareous soils under semiarid climates are major reasons for low maize productivity grown in these conditions. The hypothesis was tested that integrated use of biofertilizers (BF) and P-sources could improve dry matter (DM) partitioning and yield of hybrid maize (CS-200) in the semiarid climate of Peshawar. A field trial was conducted to investigate the impact of two BF-sources, and eight organic and inorganic P-sources combinations (P) on DM partitioning, yield, and yield components of hybrid maize. The research was conducted at the Agronomy Research Farm of The University of Agriculture Peshawar, during summer 2017. Experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with split plot arrangement, using four replications. Combination of inorganic-P [single super phosphate (SSP) and rock phosphate (RP)] and organic-P (compost and biochar) sources was used as factor-A, and BF [Phosphate Solubilizing Bacteria (PSB) and Trichoderma (TD)] as factor-B. Phosphorus was applied at the uniform rate of 120 kg ha−1 from different sources (08 treatments). The results revealed that P sources and BF had significantly affected all parameters under study. As compared with TD, application of PSB had significantly increased total plant dry weight (TDW), leaf dry weight (LDW), cob dry weight (CDW), husks dry weigh (HDW), stem dry weight (SDW), and roots dry weight (RDW) at both silking and physiological maturity. The highest ear length (EL), more number of grains per row (NGPR), number of rows per ear (NRPE), number of grains per ear (NGPE), heavy thousand grains weight (TGW), higher total biological yield above ground (BY), grain yield (GY), stover yield (SY), harvest index (HI), and shelling percentage (SP) were obtained with application of PSB over TD. As compared with sole biochar (T3), application of organic-P in the form of sole compost (T4) had significantly increased plant TDW (188.8 g & 312.9 g), LDW (34.3 g & 29.0 g), CDW (41.9 g & 176.1 g), HDW (25.9 g & 21.7 g), SDW (85.4 g & 65.6 g), RDW (26.9 g & 15.2 g) at silking and physiological maturity, respectively. Significantly higher yields (GY, SY, BY, HI & SP) and yield components (EL, NGPE, NRPE & TGW) were recorded with sole compost application (T4) or combined application of compost + SSP (T6). Among all possible interactions of BF and treatments (2 x 8 = 16 combinations), the integrated use of PSB x T4, and PSB x T6 was found to the most beneficial combinations for improving DM partitioning, yield and yield components of hybrid maize in the study area. Interestingly, the integrated use of BF with RP (T7 & T8) had more positive effect on DM partitioning, yield and yield components of hybrid maize than sole application of RP (T2).

Can combined compost and biochar application improve the quality of a highly weathered coastal savanna soil?

Soil fertility decline is a major constraint to crop production in sub-Saharan Africa. The positive effect of biochar and compost applications on soil fertility has been reported by many authors. In this study, a 30-day laboratory incubation experiment was done using 120 g samples each of a Haplic acrisol amended with corn cob biochar (cbio), rice husk biochar (rbio), coconut husk biochar (coco300 and coco700) or poultry manure compost (compost); and co- composted rice husk biochar (rcocomp) or co-composted corn cob biochar (cococomp) at rates of 1 % w/w amendment: soil, respectively. Other treatments in the study were combined poultry manure compost and corn cob biochar or rice husk biochar (1 % compost + 1% biochar: 1% soil w/w), respectively, to examine their effects on basal soil respiration, soil pH; soil microbial carbon; cation exchange capacity; total organic carbon, total nitrogen and available nitrogen concentration. Biochar and compost applied solely or together, and composted biochar increased soil pH by 0.28–2.29 pH units compared to the un-amended control. Basal respiration from the sole compost or composted rice husk, or corn cob biochar or combined biochar and compost were higher than the un-amended control, which was similar to that from the biochar only treatments. TOC in the sole compost and combined corn cob biochar and compost treatments were up to 37% and 117% higher, respectively, than the control. Combined application of rice husk biochar and compost increased MBC by 132% while sole compost addition increased MBC by 247%, respectively, compared to the control. In conclusion, the study demonstrated that sole or combined application of compost and biochar, or composted biochar improved soil quality parameters such as soil pH and MBC, and promoted soil C stabilization through enhanced TOC and reduced soil C loss through basal respiration.

Biochar and compost enhance soil quality and growth of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) under saline conditions

Soil amendments may increase the slate tolerance of plants consequently; it may increase the opportunity of using saline water in agricultural production. In the present pot trial, the effects of biochar (BIC) and compost (COM) on roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) irrigated with saline water (EC = 7.50 dS m−1) was studied. Roselle plants were amended with biochar (BIC1 and BIC2) or compost (COM1 and COM2) at rates of 1 and 2% (w/w), as well as by a mixture of the two amendments (BIC1+). The experiment included a control soil without any amendments. Biochar and compost significantly enhanced the soil quality and nutrients availability under saline irrigation. Compost and biochar improved the degree of soil aggregation, total soil porosity and soil microbial biomass. BIC1 + COM1 increased the soil microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen over the individual application of each amendments and control soil. BIC1 + COM1 increased the activity of dehydrogenase and phosphatase enzymes. Growth of roselle plants including: plant height, shoot fresh and dry weight, and chlorophyll were significantly responded to the added amendments. The maximum sepal’s yield was achieved from the combined application of compost and biochar. All the investigated treatments caused remarkable increases in the total flavonol and anthocyanin. BIC1 + COM1 increased the total anthocyanin and flavonol by 29 and 17% above the control. Despite the notable improvement in soil and roselle quality as a result of the single addition of compost or biochar, there is a clear superiority due to mixing the two amendments. It can be concluded that mixing of biochar and compost is recommended for roselle plants irrigated with saline water.

Effects of Municipal Solid Waste Compost Supplemented with Inorganic Nitrogen on Physicochemical Soil Characteristics, Plant Growth, Nitrate Content, and Antioxidant Activity in Spinach

In this study, we evaluated the effects of municipal solid waste compost supplemented with inorganic N on the physicochemical properties of soil, plant growth, nitrate concentration, and antioxidant activity in spinach. Experiments were carried out in neutral and acidic soils that were low in organic matter. A fertilized soil was used as a control, while four compost treatments—two compost rates of 35 and 70 t ha−1, supplemented or not with inorganic N (92 kg N ha−1 as Ca (NO3)2)—were applied by fertigation. The addition of compost increased the soil organic matter content and pH in both soils. The compost supplementation with N greatly increased the shoot dry weight and spinach fresh yield by nearly 109%. With the highest compost rate and 43% N applied, the yield increased in both soils, similar to results obtained in fertilized soil (3.8 kg m−2). The combined application of compost and N could replace inorganic P and K fertilization to a significant extent. The compost application at both rates and in both soils considerably decreased shoot Mn concentrations.

Performance of Zea mays L. cultivars in tannery polluted soils: Management of chromium phytotoxicity through the application of biochar and compost.

Soil contamination with heavy metals caused by various industrial activities is a threatening global environmental issue of the current era. Chromium (Cr) is the most toxic heavy metal used in leather industry and disposal of untreated wastewater into natural water bodies leads to contamination of natural soil and water resources. We studied the combined effect of biochar and compost on improving the tolerance to Cr toxicity by enhancing the morpho-physiological and biochemical attributes of two maize cultivars (P-1543 and NK-8441) grown in tannery waste polluted soils. The results of this study reveal that Cr toxicity reduced the plant growth by affecting physiological and biochemical attributes. Here, compost and biochar application significantly increased the plant biomass (fresh and dry), height, photosynthesis, chlorophyll content, water relation, starch, and protein content over treatment set as control. However, significant decline in electrolyte leakage (EL), proline, lipid peroxidation, soluble sugars, and antioxidant enzymes (APX, GPX, GR, GST, GSH, SOD, and CAT) was observed by combined application of compost and biochar. Hexavalent chromium concentration was maximum decreased to 4.1μg g-1 in soil after post-harvesting of maize cultivar NK-8441, while in roots and shoots to 22.6 and 19.2μg g-1 of maize cultivar P-1543, respectively, by combined application of compost and biochar. Moreover, these both amendments in combination showed considerably better results than their sole application and cultivar P-1543 comparatively performed better than NK 8441, in both K and S soils. Correlation and principal component analysis (PCA) revealed mostly highly positive associations among all the studied morpho, physio, and biochemical attributes of maize plant with the few exceptions, particularly concentration of Cr(III) and Cr(VI) in soil. The present work concluded that combined use of biochar and compost has great potential to decrease Cr toxicity and improve plant growth in tannery polluted soils.

Growth and yield of lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) in fly ash with nutrient amendments and Mycorrhiza for three-ratoon period

Environmental and health concerns due to fly ash dumpsite could be prevented by phytostabilization using non-food crops that will prevent pollutants’ migration and provide additional economic returns. The growth and yield of Cymbopogon citratus in the fly ash dumpsite were evaluated in a pot experiment for a three-ratoon period. Application of compost, mycorrhiza, and NPK fertilizer, singly or the combination compost + mycorrhiza, compost + NPK fertilizer, mycorrhiza + NPK fertilizer, and compost + mycorrhiza + NPK fertilizer had increased the dry matter yield and the total essential oil content compared to the control. NPK fertilization regardless of compost and mycorrhiza resulted in more than 5-fold yield over the control. Compost lowered the available heavy metals from fly ash and supplied some essential nutrients while mycorrhiza could have improved water and nutrients acquisition and uptake. However, the nutrients supplied by the compost cannot sustain the requirements for the three-ratoon period. NPK fertilization, compost, and mycorrhiza reduced the concentrations of Cr, Cu, Ni, and Pb in shoots and in essential oil. Overall, the combined application of compost, mycorrhiza, and NPK fertilization at the rate of 120-90-90 kg NPK/ha could enhance the phytostabilization potential of C. citratus in fly ash and produce a high amount of essential oil with a low concentration of heavy metals that could be safe for human use. Novelty Statement Phytostabilization using aromatic plants is a potential alternative for the on-site pollution mitigation strategy of fly ash dumpsite. In this report, the appropriateness of lemongrass as a phytostabilization agent for fly ash dumpsite of the Morupule Power Plant in Botswana was evaluated for a three-ratoon period. This is the first report from Botswana that considered the effect of soil amendments, mycorrhiza inoculation, and NPK fertilization on the growth and yield of lemongrass in fly ash as well as the heavy metal availability and uptake. The results from this study are very useful for identifying site-specific cultural management strategy of using lemongrass in the phytostabilization of fly ash dumpsite in Botswana and elsewhere.

Evaluation of some Soil Conditioners on some Properties of Salt Affected Soil and Wheat Productivity and Quality

Two field experiments were conducted during winter seasons of 2018/2019 and 2019/2020 at Sahl El-Hussainia Agric. Rcs. Station, El-Shakia governorate, to study the effect of addition of soil conditioners (compost, gypsum and bio-fertilizer alone or combination on some soil chemical and physical properties of saline soil and yield, yield components and chemical composition of wheat plant (Triticum astivum L.). The results showed that all used amendments either solely or combined application led to decrease EC (dSm-1), pH, SAR and ESP compared with control. The Bulk density, porosity and infiltration rate were positively affected by soil amendments. The combined application of compost and gypsum or between compost and bio-fertilizer were more affective than single one the soil chemical and physical properties. All treatments were significantly increase wheat yield and yield components. The highest significant effect on wheat yield and yield component were obtained by application compost+ gypsum, and also N, P, K, Zn, Fe, Mn in grain and straw.

Agronomic and economic benefits of integrated nutrient management options for cowpea production

AbstractThe limitation of soil amendments and insufficient and irregular rainfall are the main factors accounting for the decline in crop yields in the Sahelian low-input cropping systems. This study explored the agronomic and economic responses of integrated use of millet glume-derived compost with synthetic fertilizer in cowpea-based cropping system. A two-year field experiment was laid out as factorial design arranged in randomized complete blocks with three rates of compost (0, 4000, and 8000 kg ha−1) and three rates of recommended synthetic fertilizer (0, 50, and 100%). Cowpea grain yield increased markedly with combined application of compost and synthetic fertilizer. The combined use of compost applied at 8000 kg ha−1 and 50% of the recommended rate of synthetic fertilizer increased cowpea grain yield by 51% compared to the application of 100% of the recommended rate of synthetic fertilizer. The rainwater use efficiency (RaUE) increased by 52 and 49% with the combined application of compost at 8000 kg ha−1 along with 50% of the recommended rate of synthetic fertilizer when compared to the application of 100% of the recommended rate of synthetic fertilizer in 2013 and 2014, respectively. All treatments induced a positive net income, and the highest value/cost ratio was achieved with combined application of compost and synthetic fertilizer. This study highlights the possibility of improving cowpea productivity through combined use of composted locally available organic input with half of the recommended rate of synthetic fertilizer. This combination would reduce the investment in mineral fertilizer currently made by smallholder farmers in the Sahelian low-input cowpea cropping system and reduce environmental pollution resulting from the current practice of burning the millet glume.

Utilization of rice straw and tea composts for strawberry and tomato production

The use of agricultural waste is of great interest to sustainable agriculture. An investigation was carried out to evaluate the effects of compost and compost tea made from agricultural waste rice straw on the yield and quality of two horticultural crops strawberry and tomato. In strawberry experiment, six treatments were considered which wereT1: 100% soil (as a control), T2: 80% soil + 20% compost, T3: 60% soil + 40% compost, T4: 40% soil + 60% compost, T5: 20% soil + 80% compost & T6: 100% compost. Results revealed that number of fruit, fruit yield and total sugar (%)was increased with the increasing level of compost up to 80% after that decreased at 100% compost. The treatment T5: 20% soil + 80% compost gave the best results among the treatments to grow strawberry with good yield (185.3 g/plant) and sweetness (total sugar 5.19%). On the other hand, six treatments i.e. T1: Control, T2: Compost (5 t/ha), T3: Compost tea (50% concentration), T4: Compost (5 t/ha) + Compost tea (50% concentration), T5: Compost tea (100% concentration) and T6: Compost (5t/ha) + Compost tea (100% concentration) were considered in tomato experiment. As a result, it was observed that combined application of compost (5 t/ha) along with compost tea (100% conc.) (T6) gave the highest yield of tomato than not only control (T1) but also single application of compost or compost tea (T2, T3, T4&T5). Level of compost tea concentration also showed significant effect on fruit yield of tomato. Comparing between treatment T4 and T6, fruit yield was found higher (1027.67 g/plant) in treatment T6: Compost (5t/ha) + Compost tea (100% conc.) than 961.3 g/plant in T4: Compost (5 t/ha) + Compost tea (50% conc.). So, it could be summarized that use of rice straw as compost and compost tea affects positively both in two experiments. The results of this study confirm the beneficial effects of compost to increase the yield and sweetness of strawberry and combination of compost and compost tea to increase the yield of tomato.

Managing Phosphate Rock to Improve Nutrient Uptake, Phosphorus Use Efficiency, and Carrot Yields

The objectives of this study were to assess (a) the efficiency of lemon and pineapple juices and the concentration and time needed to release more than 50% of available phosphorus from phosphate rock (PR), and (b) the effect of different types of PR management on carrot yields, nutrient uptake, and phosphorus use efficiency. Field trials were set up at two sites with humic andosols and orthic acrisols over two seasons in Kenya. In a randomized complete block design, replicated three times, the following treatments were compared: (i) composted dissolved PR in lemon juice; (ii) powdered PR composted; (iii) dissolved PR in lemon juice added to compost; (iv) powdered PR and compost; (v) triple superphosphate and compost; (vi) compost alone; (vii) triple superphosphate and Tithonia diversifolia mulch; with (viii) un-amended soil as a control. Lemon juice was effective in solubilizing PR, releasing 63% of the total phosphorus applied into available phosphorus, compared to 11% for pineapple juice and 6% for water. The combined application of compost and PR dissolved in lemon juice at planting significantly increased phosphorus and potassium uptake, phosphorus use efficiency, and carrot yields that was comparable to the use of triple superphosphate and compost. The study concludes that the dissolution of phosphate rock with lemon juice at a ratio of 1:5 phosphate rock to lemon juice and its combined application (immediately after dissolution) with compost at planting improves nutrient uptake, phosphorus use efficiency, and crop yields. We recommend further studies to explore the possibility of using citrus peels or other acidic organic materials to enhance the solubility of phosphate rock, and to assess their practical feasibility and the economic advantage(s) in the large-scale production of high value crops.

Charcoal and compost application induced changes in growth and yield of Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)

The utilization of organic fertilizers in farmlands to enhance crop productivity and soil health is increasing globally. Compost and charcoal obtained from the decomposition and slow pyrolysis (respectively) of plants and animals wastes. Here we evaluated the effect of charcoal and compost on the growth and yield of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) at Agriculture Research Farm Peshawar, Pakistan during 2014-2015. Results showed that the application of compost and charcoal as sole or in combination significantly affected the yield and yield attributes of wheat. Data divulged that the maximum numbers of plant tillers (337 m-2), number of productive tillers per plant (313 m-2), number of grains per spike (56 spike-1) and 1000 seeds weight (50.2 g) were produced by the combined application of compost and charcoal at 5+5 Mg ha-1 while plant height (95.3 cm) was enhanced with the application of charcoal at 10 Mg ha-1. The gain (4106.7 kg ha-1) and biological yield (8473.3 kg ha-1) was significantly increased with the compost application at the rate of 10 Mg ha-1. These results proved that charcoal and compost can be used as organic fertilizers for boosting growth and yield performance of wheat under the agro-climatic conditions of Peshawar, Pakistan.

Bioconversion of agricultural waste and its efficient utilization in the hilly ecosystem of Northeast India

PurposeA suitable strategy for bioconversion of agricultural waste into quality organic manure and its efficient utilization was assessed in the hilly ecosystem of Northeast India.MethodsPits were dug in terrace lands and filled with chopped plant biomass (rice straw, maize stover and mixed weed biomass) with alternate layers of cow dung at 3:2 ratio. The treatment consisting of control (plant biomass + cow dung), plant biomass + cow dung + earthworm (Eisenia fetida) (with or without poly lining in the pit) and plant biomass + cow dung + earthworm + cellulose-degrading microorganism (Pseudomonas sp.) (with or without poly lining in the pit) was used for the bioconversion process.ResultsCombined inoculation of E. fetida and Pseudomonas sp. with poly lining in the pit significantly enhanced compost recovery (29.8%), cellulase activity (55.2%) and the C:N ratio (1.9%) as compared to control. Significant achievement in yield components and nutrient status in soil was observed after combined application of compost with 50% recommended dose of fertilizer.ConclusionThe current investigation established dual inoculation effect of E. fetida and Pseudomonas sp. with poly lining in the pit as a suitable technology for faster decomposition and effective bioconversion of agricultural waste into quality organic manure. A treatment imposed with such organic manure will be supportive in enhancing crop production as well as improving soil health.

Effect of Compost and Hydroabsorbent Polymer on Tree Growth and Soil Properties in a Tropical Urban Environment

ABSTRACTHorticultural application of hydroabsorbent polymer (HP) has drawn research attention due to its perceived benefits to plant growth. Few studies have compared the use of compost and HP amendments on tree establishment in tropical urban environments. An experiment was conducted to assess the effect of compost (40% v v–1) and HP (3 and 5 kg m–3) on the growth of two native tree saplings (Calophyllum soulattri and Syzygium myrtifolium) in loamy and sandy soils. The HP treatments significantly affected soil pH and extractable phosphorus (P) and potassium (K), whereas combined application of compost and HP (5 kg m–3) resulted in significantly higher nitrogen (N) in both soil types. Plant diameter and height were significantly higher following HP application. This experiment demonstrates the efficacy of HP that can cater the plant requirements at the initial growth stages which are crucial for their successful establishment in tropic urban degraded soils.
