Inference for the difference in the area under the ROC curve derived from nested binary regression models.

The area under the curve (AUC) statistic is a common measure of model performance in a binary regression model. Nested models are used to ascertain whether the AUC statistic increases when new factors enter the model. The regression coefficient estimates used in the AUC statistics are computed using the maximum rank correlation methodology. Typically, inference for the difference in AUC statistics from nested models is derived under asymptotic normality. In this work, it is demonstrated that the asymptotic normality is true only when at least one of the new factors is associated with the binary outcome. When none of the new factors are associated with the binary outcome, the asymptotic distribution for the difference in AUC statistics is a linear combination of chi-square random variables. Further, when at least one new factor is associated with the outcome and the population difference is small, a variance stabilizing reparameterization improves the asymptotic normality of the AUC difference statistic. A confidence interval using this reparameterization is developed and simulations are generated to determine their coverage properties. The derived confidence interval provides information on the magnitude of the added value of new factors and enables investigators to weigh the size of the improvement against potential costs associated with the new factors. A pancreatic cancer data example is used to illustrate this approach.

On the efficient calculation of a linear combination of chi-square random variables with an application in counting string vacua

Linear combinations of chi square random variables occur in a wide range of fields. Unfortunately, a closed, analytic expression for the probability density function is not yet known. Starting out from an analytic expression for the density of the sum of two gamma variables, a computationally efficient algorithm to numerically calculate the linear combination of chi square random variables is developed. An explicit expression for the error bound is obtained. The proposed technique is shown to be computationally efficient, i.e. only polynomial in growth in the number of terms compared to the exponential growth of most other methods. It provides a vast improvement in accuracy and shows only logarithmic growth in the required precision. In addition, it is applicable to a much greater number of terms and currently the only way of computing the distribution for hundreds of terms. As an application, the exponential dependence of the eigenvalue fluctuation probability of a random matrix model for 4D supergravity with N scalar fields is found to be of the asymptotic form exp(−0.35N).

Divergence-based tests of homogeneity for spatial data

The problem of testing homogeneity in contingency tables when the data are spatially correlated is considered. We derive statistics defined as divergences between unrestricted and restricted estimated joint cell probabilities and we show that they are asymptotically distributed as linear combinations of chi-square random variables under the null hypothesis of homogeneity. Monte Carlo simulation experiments are carried out to investigate the behavior of the new divergence test statistics and to make comparisons with the statistics that do not take into account the spatial correlation. We show that some of the introduced divergence test statistics have a significantly better behavior than the classical chi-square test for the problem under consideration when we compare them on the basis of the simulated sizes and powers.

New Weighted Portmanteau Statistics for Time Series Goodness of Fit Testing

We exploit ideas from high-dimensional data analysis to derive new portmanteau tests that are based on the trace of the square of the mth order autocorrelation matrix. The resulting statistics are weighted sums of the squares of the sample autocorrelation coefficients that, unlike many other tests appearing in the literature, are numerically stable even when the number of lags considered is relatively close to the sample size. The statistics behave asymptotically as a linear combination of chi-squared random variables and their asymptotic distribution can be approximated by a gamma distribution. The proposed tests are modified to check for nonlinearity and to check the adequacy of a fitted nonlinear model. Simulation evidence indicates that the proposed goodness of fit tests tend to have higher power than other tests appearing in the literature, particularly in detecting long-memory nonlinear models. The efficacy of the proposed methods is demonstrated by investigating nonlinear effects in Apple, Inc., and Nikkei-300 daily returns during the 2006–2007 calendar years. Hypotheses Testing for Error-in-Variables Models

In this paper, hypotheses testing based on a corrected score function are considered. Five different testing statistics are proposed and their asymptotic distributions are investigated. It is shown that the statistics are asymptotically distributed according to the chisquare distribution or can be written as a linear combination of chisquare random variables with one degree of freedom. A small scale numerical Monte Carlo study is presented in order to compare the empirical size and power of the proposed tests. A comparative calibration example is used to illustrate the results obtained.

Testing for Association in Contingency Tables with Multiple Column Responses

SUMMARY In many studies, multiple categorical responses or measurements are made on members of different populations or treatment groups. This arises often in surveys where individuals may mark all answers that apply when responding to a multiple-choice question. Frequently, it is of interest to determine whether the distributions of responses differ among groups. In this situation, the test statistic of the usual Pearson chi-square test no longer measures a scaled distance between observed and hypothesized cell counts in a contingency table, and its distribution is no longer the familiar chisquare. This paper presents a modification to the Pearson statistic that measures the appropriate distance for multiple-response tables. The asymptotic distribution is shown to be that of a linear combination of chi-square random variables with coefficients depending on the true probabilities. A bootstrap resampling method is proposed instead to obtain a null-hypothesis sampling distribution. Simulations show that this bootstrap method maintains its size under a variety of circumstances, while a naively applied Pearson chi-square test is severely affected by multiple responses.

A modified harmonic mean test procedure for variance components

A complete class of tests of variance components is characterized within the class of tests statistics of the form of a ratio of a linear combination of chi-squared random variables to an independent chi-squared random variable. This result is used in the context of general unbalanced mixed models to show that the harmonic mean method results in an inadmissible test of the random treatment effects. The harmonic mean procedure is then modified in such a way that the modified test uniformly dominates the original test. Two competitive tests are the LMP (locally most powerful) and Wald's tests, which have optimal power properties against small and large alternatives, respectively. A Monte Carlo simulation study reveals that the modified test outperforms both the LMP and Wald's tests in badly unbalanced designs and that it is a viable alternative in less unbalanced designs.
