Colloidal TiO2 nanocrystals with engineered defectivity and optical properties.

Partially reduced forms of titanium dioxide (sometimes called "black" titania) have attracted widespread interest as promising photocatalysts of oxidation due to their absorption in the visible region. The main approaches to produce it rely on postprocessing at high temperatures (up to 800 °C) and high pressures (up to 40 bar) or on highly reactive precursors (e.g., TiH2), and yield powders with poorly controlled sizes, shapes, defect concentrations and distributions. We describe an approach for the one-step synthesis of TiO2 colloidal nanocrystals at atmospheric pressure and temperatures as low as 280 °C. The temperature of the reaction allows the density of oxygen vacancies to be controlled by nearly two orders of magnitude independently of their size, shape, or colloidal stability. This synthetic pathway appears to produce vacancies that are homogeneously distributed in the nanocrystals, rather than being concentrated in an amorphous shell. As a result, the defects are protected from oxidation and result in stable optical properties in oxidizing environments.

Robust, Reproducible, and Scalable Synthesis of Silver Nanocubes.

It remains a challenge to accomplish colloidal synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals marked by high quality, large quantity, and batch-to-batch consistency. Here we report a self-airtight setup for achieving robust, reproducible, and scalable production of Ag nanocubes with uniform and controlled sizes from 18-60 nm. Different from the conventional open-to-air setup, the self-airtight system makes it practical to stabilize the reaction condition by minimizing the loss of volatile reagents. The new setup also allows us to easily optimize the amount of O2 (from air) trapped in the system, ensuring burst nucleation of single-crystal seeds, followed by their slow growth into nanocubes. Most significantly, the new setup allows for the production of Ag nanocubes at gram quantities without sacrificing uniformity, corner/edge sharpness, controlled size, and high purity across different batches. The availability of high-quality Ag nanocubes in such a large quantity is anticipated to substantially boost their use in applications related to plasmonics, catalysis, and biomedicine.

Colloidal synthesis of ZnTe nanocrystals by laser ablation and fabrication of hybrid light emitting device

Zinc telluride (ZnTe) nanocrystals (NCs) have generated the interest of researchers as an electrode material in hybrid light emitting devices (HLEDs) due to its potentially high capacity. However, due to the restricted fundamental charging capacity of the electrode materials, the available energy of existing nanomaterial light emitting devices remains enough for a wide range of applications. In this research, ZnTe nanocrystals were synthesized using Nd: YAG laser at energy 600 mJ by 150 pulse number to form a battery device out of ITO/ZnTe/TPD/Ni. The spectra of the ZnTe NCs were assessed using ultraviolet-visible (UV-VIS) and photoluminescence (PL). The results proved that the synthesized NCs were nanocrystalline structures. The energy gap (Eg) within ZnTe NCs regarded as (PL) spectrum has been identified to be about 3.6 eV. ZnTe NCs produced via laser ablation enhance the functionality of the HLEDs by increasing the carrier's charge mobility and, as a further benefit, by facilitating recombination processes inside ZnTe NCs with TPD organic polymer. In addition to lighting at 3V, current-voltage (I-V) specifications establish suitable environment as well as formation.

Ultrasound technology assisted colloidal nanocrystal synthesis and biomedical applications

Non-invasive and high spatiotemporal resolution mythologies for the diagnosis and treatment of disease in clinical medicine promote the development of modern medicine. Ultrasound (US) technology provides a non-invasive, real-time, and cost-effective clinical imaging modality, which plays a significant role in chemical synthesis and clinical translation, especially in in vivo imaging and cancer therapy. On the one hand, the US treatment is usually accompanied by cavitation, leading to high temperature and pressure, so-called “hot spot”, playing a significant role in sonochemical-based colloidal synthesis. Compared with the classical nucleation synthetic method, the sonochemical synthesis strategy presents high efficiency for the fabrication of colloidal nanocrystals due to its fast nucleation and growth procedure. On the other hand, the US is attractive for in vivo and medical treatment, with applications increasing with the development of novel contrast agents, such as the micro and nano bubbles, which are widely used in neuromodulation, with which the US can breach the blood–brain barrier temporarily and safely, opening a new door to neuromodulation and therapy. In terms of cancer treatment, sonodynamic therapy and US-assisted synergetic therapy show great effects against cancer and sonodynamic immunotherapy present unparalleled potentiality compared with other synergetic therapies. Further development of ultrasound technology can revolutionize both chemical synthesis and clinical translation by improving efficiency, precision, and accessibility while reducing environmental impact and enhancing patient care. In this paper, we review the US-assisted sonochemical synthesis and biological applications, to promote the next generation US technology-assisted applications.

Seeing is believing: what is on the surface of silver nanocrystals suspended in their original reaction solution.

Colloidal synthesis of inorganic nanocrystals always involves a multitude of ionic and molecular species. How the chemical species affect the evolution of nanocrystals remains a black box. As an essential ingredient in the polyol synthesis of Ag nanocubes, Cl- has been proposed to co-adsorb on the surface with poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) to facilitate shape evolution. However, there is still no direct evidence to confirm the presence of Cl- on the surface of Ag nanocubes while they are suspended in the original reaction solution. By leveraging the high sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering, here we offer direct evidence, for the first time, by resolving the Ag-Cl vibrational peak at 240 cm-1. This characteristic peak disappears if the synthesis is conducted in the absence of Cl-. Instead, three peaks associated with CF3COO- (from the precursor to Ag) are observed. When the sample is diluted with ethylene glycol, all the peaks associated with CF3COO- decrease proportionally in intensity, implying the involvement of chemisorption and negligible desorption during dilution. The chemisorbed CF3COO- is readily replaced by Cl- due to their major difference in binding strength. The co-adsorbed Cl- forces the carbonyl group of PVP binding to the Ag surface to take a more perpendicular configuration, enhancing its peak intensity. Altogether, these findings shed new light on the roles played by various chemical species in a successful synthesis of Ag nanocubes.

Synthesis of Ternary and Quaternary Group III-Arsenide Colloidal Quantum Dots via High-Temperature Cation Exchange in Molten Salts: The Importance of Molten Salt Speciation.

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals are an important class of materials which have many desirable optoelectronic properties. In their bulk phases, gallium- and aluminum-containing III-V materials such as GaAs, GaP, and Al1-xGaxAs represent some of the most technologically important semiconductors. However, their colloidal synthesis by traditional methods is difficult due to the high temperatures needed to crystallize these highly covalent materials and the extreme reactivity of Ga- and Al- precursors toward organic solvents at such high temperatures. A recently developed paradigm shift in the synthesis of these materials is to use molten inorganic salts as solvents to prepare Ga- containing III-V colloidal nanocrystals by cation exchange of the corresponding indium pnictide (InPn) colloidal nanocrystals. There have been several successful applications of molten salt solvents to prepare III-phosphide colloidal nanocrystals. However, little is known about the nature of these reaction environments at the relevant reaction conditions and synthesis of III-arsenide colloidal nanocrystals remains challenging. Herein we report a detailed study on cation exchange of InPn nanocrystals using nominally Lewis basic molten salt solvents with added gallium halides. Surprisingly, these salt systems phase separate into two immiscible phases, and the nanocrystals preferentially segregate to one of the phases. Using a suite of in situ spectroscopy tools, we identify the phase the nanocrystals segregate to as Lewis neutral alkali tetrahalogallate molten salts. We apply in situ high-temperature Raman spectroscopy to identify the chemical species present in several molten salt compositions at experimentally relevant reaction conditions to elucidate a molecular basis for the reactivity observed. We then employ Lewis neutral KGaI4 molten salts to prepare high-quality In1-xGaxAs and In1-xGaxP nanocrystals and demonstrate that deviation from Lewis neutral conditions accelerate nanocrystal decomposition in the case of III-arsenide materials. Further, we expand to KAlI4-based molten salts to prepare In1-x-yGaxAlyAs nanocrystals which represent an example of solution-synthesized quaternary III-V nanocrystals. These insights provide a molecular basis for the rational development of molten salt solvents, thus allowing the preparation of a diverse array of multicomponent III-V colloidal nanocrystals.

Controlled Synthesis of Lead-Free Double Perovskite Colloidal Nanocrystals for Nonvolatile Resistive Memory Devices.

Although lead-free double perovskites such as Cs2AgBiBr6 have been widely explored, they still remain a daunting challenge for the controlled synthesis of lead-free double perovskite nanocrystals with highly tunable morphology and band structure. Here, we report the controlled synthesis of lead-free double perovskite colloidal nanocrystals including Cs2AgBiBr6 and Cs2AgInxBi1-xBr6 via a facile wet-chemical synthesis method for the fabrication of high-performance nonvolatile resistive memory devices. Cs2AgBiBr6 colloidal nanocrystals with well-defined cuboidal, hexagonal, and triangular morphologies are synthesized through a facile wet-chemical approach by tuning the reaction temperature from 150 to 190 °C. Further incorporating indium into Cs2AgBiBr6 to synthesize alloyed Cs2AgInxBi1-xBr6 nanocrystals not only can induce the indirect-to-direct bandgap transition with enhanced photoluminescence but also can improve its structural stability. After optimizing the active layers and device structure, the fabricated Ag/polymethylene acrylate@Cs2AgIn0.25Bi0.75Br6/ITO resistive memory device exhibits a low power consumption (the operating voltage is ∼0.17 V), excellent cycling stability (>10 000 cycles), and good synaptic property. Our study would enable the facile wet-chemical synthesis of lead-free double perovskite colloidal nanocrystals in a highly controllable manner for the development of high-performance resistive memory devices.

Colloidal synthesis and optical properties of Cs2ZnBr4 and Cs3ZnBr5 nanocrystals

A framework to understand the effects of an oxide-ligand environment on the photoluminescence (PL) of rare-earth-element-doped oxynitride compounds is well established, whereas the effects of halide coordination on crystal field splitting and the associated PL emission are rarely studied. In this paper, we report a synthetic route to alkali metal halide NCs of Cs2ZnBr4 and Cs3ZnBr5 with a broad blue PL emission and large Stokes shift. In particular, the zero-dimensional Cs3ZnBr5 phase, in which the isolated [ZnBr]42− units were completely separated by surrounding Cs+ cations, exhibited a strong blue PL emission at 437 nm with a PL quantum yield of 8.92 %. The formation of additional trap states or defects in the Cs3ZnBr5 crystalline lattice can be associated with a relatively considerable bands at 345 and 400 nm of the optical band edge, resulting in singlet-to-singlet transition of localized excitons with a short lifetime of 3.74 ns. Therefore, herein we demonstrate that tunable alkali metal halide NCs have considerable potential for optoelectronic applications.

The Impact of Ligand Removal on the Optoelectronic Properties of Inorganic and Hybrid Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystal Films

AbstractLigand exchange performed during or after the colloidal synthesis of nanocrystals (NCs) provides an efficient way to produce conductive NC solids for optoelectronics. Herein, a post‐synthetic ligand washing process is developed and applied to two different combinations of ligands and perovskite NCs, namely robust green CsPbBr3 NCs capped by didodecyldimethylammonium bromide and near‐infrared FAPbI3 NCs decorated by weakly bound oleic acid ligands. The impact of such processes on the morphological and optoelectronic NC properties is examined while exploring parameters such as the reaction time and the influence of oxygen and humidity. For the FAPbI3 NCs, ligand washing results in extended NC aggregation and substantial photoluminescence loss, with the treatment becoming more aggressive for air‐exposed films. For the CsPbBr3 NCs, the process is insensitive to the environmental conditions and results in partial ligand shell loss and NC close packing rather than bulk‐like aggregation while affecting less the optical properties. Upon ligand removal, the photoconductance increases by up to ≈90% and ≈60% for FAPbI3 NCs and CsPbBr3 NCs, respectively. THz spectroscopy produces qualitatively similar trends of the conductivity with ligand removal time, with THz mobility values as high as 30 and 6 V−1s−1cm2 for glove box prepared FAPbI3 and CsPbBr3 NCs, respectively.

In situ synchrotron X-ray total scattering measurements and analysis of colloidal CsPbX3 nanocrystals during flow synthesis.

In situ X-ray scattering measurements of CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystal formation and halide exchange at NSLS-II beamlines were performed in an automated flow reactor. Total scattering measurements were performed at the 28-ID-2 (XPD) beamline and small-angle X-ray scattering at the 16-ID (LiX) beamline. Nanocrystal structural parameters of interest, including size, size distribution and atomic structure, were extracted from modeling the total scattering data. The results highlight the potential of these beamlines and the measurement protocols described in this study for studying dynamic processes of colloidal nanocrystal synthesis in solution with timescales on the order ofseconds.

Synthesis and Electronic Structure of Mid-Infrared Absorbing Cu3SbSe4 and CuxSbSe4 Nanocrystals.

Aliovalent I-V-VI semiconductor nanocrystals are promising candidates for thermoelectric and optoelectronic applications. Famatinite Cu3SbSe4 stands out due to its high absorption coefficient and narrow band gap in the mid-infrared spectral range. This paper combines experiment and theory to investigate the synthesis and electronic structure of colloidal CuxSbSe4 nanocrystals. We achieve predictive composition control of size-uniform CuxSbSe4 (x = 1.9-3.4) nanocrystals. Density functional theory (DFT)-parametrized tight-binding simulations on nanocrystals show that the more the Cu-vacancies, the wider the band gap of CuxSbSe4 nanocrystals, a trend which we also confirm experimentally via FTIR spectroscopy. We show that SbCu antisite defects can create mid-gap states, which may give rise to sub-bandgap absorption. This work provides a detailed study of CuxSbSe4 nanocrystals and highlights the potential opportunities as well as challenges for their application in infrared devices.

Colloidal InAs Tetrapods: Impact of Surfactants on the Shape Control.

We have approached the synthesis of colloidal InAs nanocrystals (NCs) using amino-As and ligands that are different from the commonly employed oleylamine (OA). We found that carboxylic and phosphonic acids led only to oxides, whereas tri-n-octylphosphine, dioctylamine, or trioctylamine (TOA), when employed as the sole ligands, yielded InAs NCs with irregular sizes and a broad size distribution. Instead, various combinations of TOA and OA delivered InAs NCs with good control over the size distribution, and the TOA:OA volume ratio of 4:1 generated InAs tetrapods with arm length of 5-6 nm. Contrary to tetrapods of II-VI materials, which have a zinc-blende core and wurtzite arms, these NCs are entirely zinc-blende, with arms growing along the ⟨111⟩ directions. They feature a narrow excitonic peak at ∼950 nm in absorption and a weak photoluminescence emission at 1050 nm. Our calculations indicated that the bandgap of the InAs tetrapods is mainly governed by the size of their core and not by their arm lengths when these are longer than ∼3 nm. Nuclear magnetic resonance analyses revealed that InAs tetrapods are mostly passivated by OA with only a minor fraction of TOA. Molecular dynamics simulations showed that OA strongly binds to the (111) facets whereas TOA weakly binds to the edges and corners of the NCs and their combined use (at high TOA:OA volume ratios) promotes growth along the ⟨111⟩ directions, eventually forming tetrapods. Our work highlights the use of mixtures of ligands as a means of improving control over InAs NCs size and size distribution.

Electrochemical molecular intercalation and exfoliation of solution-processable two-dimensional crystals.

Electrochemical molecular intercalation of layered semiconducting crystals with organic cations followed by ultrasonic exfoliation has proven to be an effective approach to producing a rich family of organic/inorganic hybrid superlattices and high-quality, solution-processable 2D semiconductors. A traditional method for exfoliating 2D crystals relies on the intercalation of inorganic alkali metal cations. The organic cations (e.g., alkyl chain-substituted quaternary ammonium cations) are much larger than their inorganic counterparts, and the bulky molecular structure endows distinct intercalation and exfoliation chemistry, as well as molecular tunability. By using this protocol, many layered 2D crystals (including graphene, black phosphorus and versatile metal chalcogenides) can be electrochemically intercalated with organic quaternary alkylammonium cations. Subsequent solution-phase exfoliation of the intercalated compounds is realized by regular bath sonication for a short period (5-30 min) to produce free-standing, thin 2D nanosheets. It is also possible to graft additional ligands on the nanosheet surface. The thickness of the exfoliated nanosheets can be measured by using atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Modifying the chemical structure and geometrical configuration of alkylammonium cations results in different exfoliation behavior and a family of versatile organic/inorganic hybrid superlattices with tunable physical/chemical properties. The whole protocol takes ~6 h for the successful production of stable, ultrathin 2D nanosheet dispersion in solution and another 11 h for depositing thin films and transferring them onto an arbitrary surface. This protocol does not require expertise beyond basic electrochemistry knowledge and conventional colloidal nanocrystal synthesis and processing.

Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy of Benzylpenicillin Using Silver Nanocrystals Modified with Moroccan Plant Extracts

Green chemical routes for the synthesis of colloidal metal nanocrystals have been of great interest, namely in the context of nanosciences associated with biological applications. Among these methods, the synthesis of metal colloids using medicinal plant extracts originates nanocrystals having surfaces modified with chemical compounds of biological origin, which can be further explored in association with conventional pharmaceutics. In this context, the development of spectroscopic methods that seeks for understanding the potential benefits of using formulations that contain natural compounds and metal nanoparticles with therapeutic properties is of relevance. This research describes the chemical synthesis of silver colloids via the reduction of Ag(I) in the presence of distinct aqueous plant extracts. The selected extracts were obtained from Moroccan plants that have been used in traditional therapeutic practices over the centuries. The method led to stable colloids comprising polydispersed Ag nanocrystals that show surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) activity. As an illustrative scenario, these colloids have been applied to the SERS detection of the natural β-lactam antibiotic benzylpenicillin, also known as penicillin G (PG). Our results indicate that all the Ag colloids tested with the different plant extracts are SERS-active for PG without showing detrimental interference from chemical adsorbates originated from the extracts. Therefore, this spectroscopic method can be further explored for monitoring nanoformulations of pharmaceuticals and metal colloids obtained using biological synthesis.

Quantification, Exchange, and Removal of Surface Ligands on Noble-Metal Nanocrystals.

ConspectusSurface ligands are vital to the colloidal synthesis of noble-metal nanocrystals with well-controlled sizes and shapes for various applications. The surface ligands not only dictate the formation of nanocrystals with diverse shapes but also serve as a colloidal stabilizer to prevent the suspended nanocrystals from aggregation during their synthesis or storage. By leveraging the facet selectivity of some surface ligands, one can further control the sites for growth or galvanic replacement to transform presynthesized nanocrystals into complex structures that are otherwise difficult to fabricate using conventional methods. Furthermore, the presence of surface ligands on nanocrystals also facilitates their applications in areas such as sensing, imaging, nanomedicine, and self-assembly. Despite their popular use in enhancing the properties of nanocrystals and thus optimizing their performance in a wide variety of applications, it remains a major challenge to quantitatively determine the coverage density of ligand molecules, not to mention the difficulty of substituting or removing them without compromising the surface structure and aggregation state of the nanocrystals.In this Account, we recapitulate our efforts in developing methods capable of qualitatively or quantitatively measuring, exchanging, and removing the surface ligands adsorbed on noble-metal nanocrystals. We begin with an introduction to the typical interactions between ligand molecules and surface atoms, followed by a discussion of the Langmuir model that can be used to describe the adsorption of surface ligands. It is also emphasized that the adsorption process may become very complex in the case of a polymeric ligand due to the variations in binding configuration and chain conformation. We then highlight the capabilities of various spectroscopy methods to analyze the adsorbed ligands qualitatively or quantitatively. Specifically, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy are three examples of qualitative methods that can be used to confirm the absence or presence of a surface ligand. On the other hand, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry can be used for quantitative measurements. Additionally, the coverage density of a ligand can be derived by analyzing the morphological changes during nanocrystal growth. We then discuss how the ligands present on the surface of metal nanocrystals can be exchanged directly or indirectly to meet the requirements of different applications. The former can be done using a ligand with stronger binding, whereas the latter is achieved by introducing a sacrificial shell to the surface of the nanocrystals. Furthermore, we highlight three additional strategies besides simple washing to remove the surface ligands, including calcination, heating in a solution, and UV-ozone treatment. Finally, we showcase three applications of metal nanocrystals in nanomedicine, tumor targeting, and self-assembly by taking advantage of the diversity of surface ligands bearing different functional groups. We also offer perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in realizing the full potential of surface ligands.

Robotic platform for accelerating the high-throughput study of silver nanocrystals in sensitive/selective Hg2+ detection

Colorimetric determination of trace mercury ions (Hg2+) with high reproducibility and sensitivity is urgently required for water safety and environmental monitoring. Herein, an automated robotic platform is described for high-throughput and controllable synthesis of colloidal silver nanocrystals (Ag NCs) and sensitive/selective colorimetric determination of Hg2+ in aqueous solutions. The predicted models of optical simulation are constructed as data-driven models to evaluate the quality of Ag NCs synthesized by a wet-chemical method. Based on an experimental database derived by optical characterization, the machine-learning (ML) model which covers multiple synthesis parameters is established for uniform synthesis of Ag NCs with controllable sizes matching the classical growth model. Moreover, the database of more than 1,200 valid samples established for the optical properties of Ag NCs is digitized to correlate with their average size. Optimized manual re-synthesis of high-quality Ag NCs demonstrates the practical feasibility and scalability of established models. The prepared Ag NCs can be used directly or modified with polymer ligands for quantitative detection of Hg2+ in the linear range from 0.01 to 200 µM with a detection limit of 3 nM. The strategy provides a scientific and effective way for the high-throughput study of nanoscale optical materials in chemical engineering and environmental monitoring.

Synthesis, Assembly, and Applications of Magic-Sized Semiconductor (CdSe)13 Cluster.

ConspectusAtomically precise metal chalcogenide clusters (MCCs) are model molecular compounds of scientifically and technologically important semiconductor nanocrystals, which are known as quantum dots (QDs). The significantly high ambient stability of MCCs of particular sizes, as compared to that of slightly smaller or larger sizes, made them be termed "magic-sized clusters" (MSCs). In other words, MSCs with specific sizes between sizes of precursors (typically, metal-ligand complexes) and nanocrystals (typically, QDs) appear sequentially during the colloidal synthesis of nanocrystals, while the other cluster species decompose to precursor monomers or are consumed during the growth of the nanocrystals. Unlike nanocrystals with an ambiguous atomic-level structure and a substantial size distribution, MSCs possess atomically monodisperse size, composition, and distinct atomic arrangement. Chemical synthesis and exploration of properties of MSCs are of great significance since they help systematically understand the evolution of fundamental properties as well as build structure-activity relationships at distinct molecular levels. Furthermore, MSCs are anticipated to offer atomic-level insights into the growth mechanism of the semiconductor nanocrystals, which is highly desirable in the design of advanced materials with new functions. In this Account, we cover our recent efforts in the advancement of one of the most important stoichiometric CdSe MSCs, (CdSe)13. In particular, we present its molecular structure derived from a single crystal X-ray crystallographic study of the closest MSC, Cd14Se13. The crystal structure of MSC enables not only the understanding of the electronic structure and prediction of the potential sites for heteroatom dopants (e.g., Mn2+ and Co2+) but also the identification of favorable synthetic conditions for the selective synthesis of desired MSCs. Next, we focus on enhancing the photoluminescence quantum yield and stability of Mn2+ doped (CdSe)13 MSCs through their self-assembly, which is facilitated by the rigid diamines. In addition, we show how atomic-level synergistic effects and functional groups of the assemblies of alloy MSCs can be utilized for a highly enhanced catalytic CO2 fixation with epoxides. Benefiting from the intermediate stability, the MSCs are explored as single-source precursors to low-dimensional nanostructures, such as nanoribbons and nanoplatelets, through the controlled transformation. Distinct differences in the outcome of the solid-state and colloidal-state conversion of MSCs suggest the need for careful consideration of the phase and reactivity of MSCs as well as the type of dopant to achieve novel structured multicomponent semiconductors. Reversible Facet Reconstruction of CdSe/CdS Core/Shell Nanocrystals by Facet–Ligand Pairing

Synthesis of colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals with defined facet structures is challenging, though such nanocrystals are essential for fully realizing their size-dependent optical and optoelectronic properties. Here, for the mostly developed colloidal wurtzite CdSe/CdS core/shell nanocrystals, facet reconstruction is investigated under typical synthetic conditions, excluding nucleation, growth, and interparticle ripening. Within the reaction time window, two reproducible sets of facets─each with a specific group of low-index facets─can be reversibly reconstructed by switching the ligand system, indicating thermodynamic stability of each set. With a unique <0001> axis, atomic structures of the low-index facets of wurtzite nanocrystals are diverse. Experimental and theoretical studies reveal that each facet in a given set is paired with a common ligand in the solution, namely, either fatty amine and/or cadmium alkanoate. The robust bonding modes of ligands are found to be strongly facet-dependent and often unconventional, instead of following Green's classification. Results suggest that facet-controlled nanocrystals can be synthesized by optimal facet-ligand pairing either in synthesis or after-synthesis reconstruction, implying semiconductor nanocrystal formation with size-dependent properties down to an atomic level.
