Formation and Action of a Learning Community with Collaborative Learning Software

ABSTRACT This paper explores the formation of a learning community facilitated by custom collaborative learning software. Drawing on research in group cognition, knowledge building discourse, and learning analytics, we conducted a mixed-methods field study involving an asynchronous online discussion consisting of 259 messages posted by 50 participants. The cluster analysis results provide evidence that the recommender system within the software can support the formation of a learning community with a small peripheral cluster. Regarding knowledge building discourse, we identified the distinct roles of central, intermediate (i.e., middle of three clusters), and peripheral clusters within a learning community. Furthermore, we found that message lexical complexity does not correlate to the stages of knowledge building. Overall, this study contributes to the group cognition theory to deepen our understanding about collaboration to construct new knowledge in online discussions. Moreover, we add a much-needed text mining perspective to the qualitative interaction analysis model.

Human organizational patterns applied to collaborative learning software systems

Within socially driven software development methodologies like Tropos, a new software system could be modeled as a set of collaborating actors pursuing collective and individual goals. These actors could possibly be structured around an organizational pattern. The organizational model could then, within the design of the system, be mapped to the software behavior through the use of logical agents. This paper overviews a set of human organizational styles from organization theory literature and applied here in an original manner to the representation of collaborative learning software systems. The structure-in-5 is indeed applied to a Learning Management System development and the joint venture to a Massive Open Online Course one. Being by nature a network of social interactions, collaborative learning systems are perfectly adequate for agent-oriented software development. Besides, the two above-mentioned organization styles are further represented using the i* modeling language and a formal specification language. A set of non-functional requirements is also identified and these organizational styles are further evaluated in the light of these.

Collaborative E-learning Tool for Secondary Schools

Nowadays, educational technology is getting growing importance for the learning environment. So e-learning is an essential tool for teaching and learning. Many researches have been done to investigate the effectiveness of e-learning. Therefore consideration must be given to the development of collaborative activities, which enables students to learn together. So, this research offers collaborative learning for good learning environment to do homework and projects. The purpose of the study was to find out the essential tools and features on collaborative software, particularly on Secondary School and Pre University learners’ participation. It also aimed to design collaborative software to do homework and project together in separate places. The instruments used to gather data were interviews and also a survey which undertook the completing of two printed questionnaires for both learners and teachers before the implementation of the software and afterwards. The data collected was then subjected to statistical analyses. The findings gathered and analyzed in Educational Complex of Imam Khomeini Kuala Lumpur were found to satisfy the involvement in collaborative learning at home. Collaborative learning can be put into practice to enhance learning and teaching. The respondents were willing to consider Collaborative learning as they plan to do homework and project together for better learning environment. The two main criteria for choosing collaborative software were its software contents and web page accessibility. The proposed model “Lotfi VCL” (Lotfi Virtual Collaborative Learning) gives an application of the tools and features of collaborative learning software suitable for learners’ and teachers’ collaborative activities. Lotfi VCL has been evaluated by students and teachers and the results are reported to be satisfactory. Finally, the research contributions and future enhancements are elaborated.

Using Voice Boards: pedagogical design, technological implementation, evaluation and reflections

A Voice Board (VB) is an asynchronous audio discussion forum. This paper discusses the use of the VB produced by Wimba, a company providing collaborative learning software for education. The Wimba VB allows users to record and post audio, audio and text, and text-only messages without requiring additional software or knowledge of complex audio editing tools.

ORGANIZATION OF EDUCATIONAL COLLABORATION IN INTERNET

The purpose and usage methodology of network collaborative learning software are discussed. The Internet collaborative learning system “Informatics” is described.
