Creating Industrial Ecosystems as a Tool for Anti-Crisis Management

In the current economic climate, the Russian industrial sector needs significant structural reform to facilitate its transition to a new, more advanced technological level. To achieve this goal, it is recommended to introduce new management tools, one of which is the establishment of industrial ecosystems.The purpose of the article is to prove that industrial ecosystems have a positive effect on the sustainable development of the Russian economy, especially during economic crises.The subject of the study includes industrial ecosystems as a crucial tool for managing economic crises. It also explores the historical context of industrial collaboration and the formation of clusters during economic downturns. This paper explores two industries that have been significantly affected by recent economic crises: pharmaceutical and automobile manufacturing. It is shown that during times of crisis, some industries develop characteristics similar to ecosystems. The authors propose a method for analysing and evaluating the performance of industrial ecosystems.The theoretical and practical significance of the study of this study lies in identifying the key factors that contribute to the development of effective industrial ecosystems. Furthermore, it aims to develop a trustworthy tool for evaluating their influence on socio-economic processes. The establishment of industrial symbioses is seen not only as a way to overcome economic crises but also as the foundation for the strategic long-term development of the Russian economy.

Understanding the Evolvement of Trust Over Time within Human-AI Teams

The success of human-AI teams (HATs) requires humans to work with AI teammates in trustful ways over a certain time period. However, how trust evolves and changes dynamically in response to human-AI team interactions is generally understudied. This work explores the evolvement of trust in HATs over time by analyzing 45 participants' experiences of trust or distrust in an AI teammate prior to, during, and after collaborating with AI in a three-member HAT. Our findings highlight that humans' expectations of AI's ability, integrity, benevolence, and adaptability influence their initial trust in AI before collaboration. However, this initial trust can be maintained or revised through the development of situational trust during collaboration in response to the AI teammate's communication behaviors. Further, the trust developed through collaboration can impact individuals' subsequent expectations of AI's ability and their collaborations with AI. Our findings also reveal the similarities and differences in the temporal dimensions of trust for AI and human teammates. We contribute to CSCW community by offering one of the first empirical investigations into the dynamic and temporal dimension of trust evolvement in HATs. Our work yields insights into the pathways to expanding the methodological toolkit for investigating the development of trust in HATs, formulating theories of trust for the HAT context. These insights further inform the effective design of AI teammates and provide guidance on the timing, content, and methods for calibrating trust in future human-AI collaboration contexts.

Museums in Action: How Museums are redefining their Role in European Projects

An innovative and detailed analysis of the role of museums in European Union-funded projects is presented in this article, based on a thorough search of the European CORDIS database. The study explores how museums have transformed from being passive custodians of cultural heritage to becoming dynamic and multifunctional actors in European research and innovation. Through a systematic analysis of European projects funded in the 2007-2022 period, the article highlights the growing participation of museums in various EU programs, the varied roles they assume-from beneficiary partners to associate collaborators-and their impact in key areas such as education, research, digitization and technological innovation. This research provides both quantitative and qualitative insights into museums' involvement in shaping European cultural identity and policy development. The paper is of particular interest to policy makers, museum professionals and cultural heritage researchers, offering a unique perspective on the evolving role of museums in the European context and future opportunities for collaboration and funding.

Cloud-Based Blockchain for Secure Data Sharing and Collaboration

Abstract: This study seeks to delve into the interrelation between user training and data security events in light of cloud-based blockchain technology improvement in terms of data security in collaborative contexts. A total of five firms was taken to collect data from a quantitative study, focusing more on variables that surrounded user training levels as well as data security events. This reflects that there exists a strong statistical negative correlation of frequency of security incidents and user training. Hence it has been established that the increase in the extent of training has considerably reduced vulnerabilities. Moreover, it was observed that there exists a positive relation between user participation and training. This means that to safe-guard data shared procedures, successful training activities can play an essential role. Such findings may be practically useful for firms who wish to take maximum advantage of their data security strategy.

An Operational Assessment of Team Cognition for Long-Distance Space Missions

Long-duration and long-distance space missions create a complicated context for collaboration. The combination of environmental and psychosocial factors will negatively impact individual and team cognition, potentially jeopardizing mission success. To provide a richer understanding of the issues surrounding team cognition for future space exploration missions, this paper describes an operational assessment to identify the key team cognition factors most likely to affect problem solving. Semi-structured interviews were conducted to elicit team cognitive and associated factors relevant to long-duration spaceflight missions. Ten NASA employees (e.g., astronauts, mission controllers) were interviewed to provide a more complete and accurate representation of individual and team cognitive demands. Our goal was to explicate critical cognitive processes associated with team effectiveness in space missions and provide guidance on technology and training collaborative problem solving for space missions.

Debts of Gratitude in Cross‐Cultural Perspective: Confucian and Western Ethics

ABSTRACTThis article examines the contrasting conceptions of gratitude in Early Confucian and Western philosophy. It focuses on a key difference: the presence of the notion of ‘debts of gratitude’ in Western thought and its absence in Confucianism. We explore how this difference is rooted in contrasting ethical outlooks and values. Western philosophy often conceives of gratitude as a duty of reciprocation, furthering the values of social equality and individual autonomy. By contrast, Early Confucians viewed gratitude as proper acknowledgement that strengthens social relationships that are part of an ongoing collective project, spanning generations. This view reflects the importance of values such as community, harmony, and ritual propriety in Confucianism. Unlike the Western context, in the Early Confucian social world, there was no role for ‘debts of gratitude’ to play. There were no Confucian values that ‘debts of gratitude’ would help to realize, or would be responsive to, in the way that debts of gratitude further the values of equality and independence in the West. We conclude by noting that some Western philosophers express ideas about gratitude in collaborative contexts that align with Confucian ideas, suggesting some shared elements between Confucian and Western ethical outlooks.

Collaboration as a Value in Islamic Education from Learning from Corpse Management

This article examines collaboration as a core value in Islamic education, focusing on the partnership between two funeral organizations: the Muhammadiyah Branch Leadership Muslim Corpse Association (RKM PCM Palangkaraya) and the Shalahuddin Muslim Family Association (KKM Shalahuddin), which is affiliated with the University of Palangkaraya. The study utilizes a qualitative multi-case research approach to analyze the nature of cooperation, motivations, benefits, obstacles, and challenges in the kifayah process between the two families. Data collection methods included interviews with organizational administrators, observations of the kifayah process, and analysis of organizational charter documents and membership fees. The findings revealed a clear division of responsibilities: RKM PCM Palangkaraya oversees the rituals of washing and praying for the deceased, while KKM Shalahuddin provides equipment and coordinates the burial. This collaboration is vital for ensuring that the burial aligns with Islamic law, despite facing challenges such as communication barriers and funding limitations. The partnership enhances service delivery and nurtures mutual respect between the organizations. However, the lack of prior discussions regarding tahlil practices may create confusion about roles and responsibilities. The study underscores the importance of incorporating effective communication and mutual understanding into educational curricula, allowing students to grasp the values of cooperation and the principles of corpse management in Islam. This knowledge ultimately fosters character development and community skills, highlighting education's role in addressing societal needs within an Islamic framework. Future research is recommended to further investigate tahlil practices in this collaborative context to clarify the roles and responsibilities of each organization.

Creating Community-Based Tourism Resilience

This paper explores the collaborative social development achieved between a university in Malang, an industrial paint manufacturer, and the slum community of Jodipan, situated alongside the Brantas River. This marginalised community has overcome significant challenges through applied service-learning projects, transforming it into a vibrant hub and major tourist attraction. These efforts highlight the profound impact of service learning on community development and building commercial resilience. Jodipan offers valuable lessons on grassroots developmental initiatives. Once a slum, it now plays a critical role in the local tourism economy, provisioning new commercial opportunities in the form of hospitality venues, homestays and the retailing of specialist handicrafts. This initiative underscores the importance of partnerships and social initiatives in creating meaningful impacts on disadvantaged communities. This study identifies service-learning as a crucial catalyst in Jodipan's revitalisation as a tourism attraction, drawing on existing literature to analyse its role in the community's transformation. The unique collaborative context of Jodipan's resilience-building efforts amidst poverty and environmental degradation is examined. By foregrounding Jodipan's remarkable experiences, this study demonstrates how service-learning can drive economic empowerment. The ultimate lesson is that community resilience and well-being involve the ability to withstand initial developmental shocks and adapt to new circumstances.

Bridging Success through Comparative: Uncovering the Motivation Potential of Improving Students' Writing, Individually vs Collaboratively

Writing effectively is crucial in upper secondary education, yet many students face challenges with vocabulary, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Educators can assist by incorporating both individual and collaborative writing methods. This study investigates the impact of these writing activities on students' writing skills and examines the role of student motivation. Using a causal-comparative method, the study involved 35 tenth-grade students from SMA Negeri 2 Tambang, Indonesia. A questionnaire based on Dörnyei (1994) indicators assessed student motivation levels, while a descriptive writing test evaluated their writing skills. Writing samples were scored using an analytical scoring rubric, and a two-way ANOVA analyzed the effects of motivation levels on writing skills in both individual and collaborative contexts. Results showed a significant interaction between the type of writing activity and motivation level, with a significance level of 0.006. The findings indicate that collaborative writing activities significantly enhance writing skills, while motivation levels do not have a substantial impact on writing performance. Educators are encouraged to blend individual and collaborative writing activities to optimize students' writing skill development. Individual writing supports personal reflection and growth, whereas collaborative writing promotes peer learning and idea exchange.

Revisiting research on the governance of interorganizational relationships

This essay re-examines the literature on the governance of interorganizational relationships, focusing on the insights of alliance research using transaction cost economics. Despite substantial progress, challenges arise because research has not devoted attention to some mechanisms of governance (i.e., administrative controls and supporting legal institutions) compared with others (i.e., incentives). Parties can develop bespoke collaborative agreements that mix and match various mechanisms of governance along these dimensions, rather than accessing a typical bundle commonly associated with a discrete organizational form. This conclusion challenges the iconic governance continuum and surfaces new methodological opportunities for this research stream. The essay also challenges what we think we know by identifying a variety of omitted variable problems that often crop up in governance research (e.g., focusing on the cooperative context of collaboration while not attending to the competitive context, excluding critical administrative structures when studying the interplay between contracts and trust, assuming transactional attributes are exogenous rather than endogenous to a search process, failing to account for shifting institutional supports for collaboration, etc.). By clarifying what we know and do not know about alliance governance, the essay identifies some pathways for developing more reliable, cumulative knowledge on interorganizational relationships.

Integrating group awareness into team‐based learning

AbstractBackgroundTeam‐based learning (TBL) is a widely recognised pedagogical strategy used in diverse fields and courses. Despite the success of TBL, certain concerns have arisen regarding social loafing within group collaboration contexts; this loafing can reduce the overall effectiveness of learning.ObjectivesThis study addressed the aforementioned concerns by integrating group awareness (GA) information into each stage of TBL, resulting in a TBL + GA system designed to enhance TBL instruction. During online collaborative learning, GA information provides insights into the activities completed by peers and thus the peers' preparedness and achievement; this knowledge fosters motivation, participation, and reflection.MethodsA quasiexperiment was performed with students from two freshman classes (40 and 41 students, respectively) in a Taiwanese university; the control and experimental classes used the TBL only and TBL + GA systems, respectively. Student learning effort was evaluated in terms of preclass preparation, including the use of learning materials and online test scores. Learning achievement was evaluated by assessing the quality of students' assignments. Student feedback, including peer evaluations and students' perceptions of their TBL experience, was collected and compared for the two classes.Results and ConclusionsThe TBL + GA system significantly enhanced the preclass preparation efforts of the participants, mitigating social loafing. This improvement manifested as higher practice engagement and better online assessment scores. The TBL + GA system also improved assignment quality and elicited more constructive and positive peer feedback.ImplicationsIntegrating GA information into each stage of TBL may positively affect the effectiveness of instruction. The proposed TBL + GA system can serve as a practical model for instructors seeking to enhance TBL implementation and foster a more engaging and constructive learning environment.

Positive Communication Practices for Enhancing Collaboration

Collaboration is the process of people working together toward a common goal and occurs in a wide range of contexts. When done well, almost anything is possible. Because of its potential, collaboration is touted as one of the most promising ways to address today’s most difficult and complex problems. However, not all collaborative efforts realize their potential for a variety of reasons, including the relational aspects of collaboration. Central to collaboration and its efficacy, interpersonal relationships can be enhanced through positive communication. This research explores positive and negative communication patterns in collaborative contexts. Thematic analysis is applied to qualitative data collected from 278 participants involved in varied collaborative efforts. Fifteen collaborative communication practices emerge as playing an important role in fostering collaboration. Findings from this research contribute to the growing field of positive communication scholarship by offering positive communication practices that people can employ to strengthen interpersonal relationships in collaborative efforts. Guidance on ways practitioners can apply these findings is provided.

Failing forward: the transformative power of writing in interdisciplinary ethnographic research

PurposeTo address complex societal challenges, particularly in the context of climate change, there is a growing interest in employing interdisciplinary ethnographic research (IER). This paper examines the experiences associated with participating in IER, drawing insights from a collaboration project that integrates organization studies with energy management research.Design/methodology/approachWithin the context of a three-year interdisciplinary collaboration, the paper focuses on the performance of an interview and the analysis thereof. It draws from this example to highlight the difficulties in translating discipline-specific language and understanding failures in IER. Including an exploration of the process of recovery, involving analyzing research results and the subsequent collaborative writing of a paper.FindingsThe primary findings revolve around the challenges inherent in ethnography as an interdisciplinary method. These challenges include language barriers between disciplines and the complexities of comprehending and learning from failures in interdisciplinary research.Originality/valueThe contribution lies in its exploration of abductive reasoning in IER, shedding light on the complexities and opportunities associated with interdisciplinary collaboration in the making. Collaborative Problem-Solving in Knowledge-Rich Domains: A Multi-Study Structural Equation Model

Collaborative skills are crucial in knowledge-rich domains, such as medical diagnosing. The Collaborative Diagnostic Reasoning (CDR) model emphasizes the importance of high-quality collaborative diagnostic activities (CDAs; e.g., evidence elicitation and sharing), influenced by content and collaboration knowledge as well as more general social skills, to achieve accurate, justified, and efficient diagnostic outcomes (Radkowitsch et al., 2022). However, it has not yet been empirically tested, and the relationships between individual characteristics, CDAs, and diagnostic outcomes remain largely unexplored. The aim of this study was to test the CDR model by analyzing data from three studies in a simulation-based environment and to better understand the construct and the processes involved (N = 504 intermediate medical students) using a structural equation model including indirect effects. We found various stable relationships between individual characteristics and CDAs, and between CDAs and diagnostic outcome, highlighting the multidimensional nature of CDR. While both content and collaboration knowledge were important for CDAs, none of the individual characteristics directly related to diagnostic outcome. The study suggests that CDAs are important factors in achieving successful diagnoses in collaborative contexts, particularly in simulation-based settings. CDAs are influenced by content and collaboration knowledge, highlighting the importance of understanding collaboration partners’ knowledge. We propose revising the CDR model by assigning higher priority to collaboration knowledge compared with social skills, and dividing the CDAs into information elicitation and sharing, with sharing being more transactive. Training should focus on the development of CDAs to improve CDR skills.

MEM&SO protocol: understanding the determinants of social learning in neurodegenerative diseases

BackgroundPeople with neurodegenerative diseases may have difficulty learning new information, owing to their cognitive impairments. Teaching them techniques for learning in social contexts could alleviate this difficulty. The present study will examine the performances of patients with Alzheimer’s disease and patients with the semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia on a memory test administered in three social contexts. The protocol will make it possible to identify determinants of social interactions, social abilities, cognition, and personality that can explain the potentially beneficial effect of social context on learning in these patients.MethodsThirty dyads (patient with primary memory impairment who meets criteria for Alzheimer’s disease paired with caregiver), 16 dyads (patient meeting criteria for semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia paired with caregiver), and 46 dyads (healthy controls with no cognitive complaints) will be recruited. A nonverbal memory test (social memory task) will be administered to each dyad in three different social contexts (presence-only, observation, collaboration). Patients and healthy controls will also undergo a neuropsychological assessment to measure social (interactions and abilities), cognitive and personality aspects. Patients will be compared with controls on differential social scores calculated between the presence-only and collaboration contexts, and between the presence-only and observation contexts. A multiple comparative case study will be conducted to identify social, cognitive and personality variables that potentially explain the differential scores in the collaboration and observation contexts.DiscussionFor the first time, memory will be assessed in patients with Alzheimer’s disease and patients with the semantic variant of primary progressive aphasia in three different contexts (presence-only, observation, collaboration). The multiple comparative case study will make it possible to identify the determinants of memory performance in the social context, in order to create the most beneficial learning context for individual patients, according to their profile.Trial registrationThis study was approved by the Ile de France XI institutional review board (2022-A00198-35), and registered on ClinicalTrials.gov (no. A journey of collaborative inquiry: perspectives from preservice and cooperating music teachers in Korea

ABSTRACT Executing a successful teaching practicum is closely related to effective collaboration between preservice and cooperating teachers. Thus, this study implemented and investigated collaborative inquiry between preservice and cooperating music teachers in Korea. The results showed that the preservice music teachers played an important role in theoretical application based on their recently acquired knowledge, whereas the cooperating music teachers challenged their thinking by offering practical perspectives grounded in their experiences. The different roles enabled the connection of theory to practice in music education and the active participation from both groups. In addition, sufficient time for the preparation of instructional strategies and shared visions positively affected the equally important roles between the preservice and cooperating music teachers, whereas lack of time and opportunities to reflect on teaching practices after lesson implementation hindered collaborative inquiry. These findings support the previous literature, which suggests that collaborative inquiry could be an effective tool for teacher collaboration, by applying collaborative inquiry to the specific context of collaboration between preservice and collaborating music teachers.

Self‐regulation and shared regulation in collaborative learning in adaptive digital learning environments: A systematic review of empirical studies

AbstractAdaptive learning technologies are closely related to learners' self‐regulatory processes in individual and collaborative learning. This study presents the outcomes of a systematic literature review of empirical evidence on adaptive learning environments to foster self‐regulation and shared regulation of learning in collaborative settings. We provide an overview of what and how adaptive technologies have been used to understand and promote self‐regulated learning in collaborative contexts. A search resulted in 38 papers being analysed. Specifically, we identified the seven main objectives (feedback and scaffolding, self‐regulatory skills and strategies, learning trajectories, collaborative learning processes, adaptation and regulation, self‐assessment, and help‐seeking behaviour) that the adaptive technology research has been focusing on. We also summarize the implications derived from the reviewed papers and frame them within seven thematic areas. Finally, this review stresses that future research should consider developing a converging theoretical framework that would enable concrete monitoring and support for self‐regulation and socially shared regulation of learning. Our findings set a baseline to support the adoption and proliferation of adaptive learning technology within self‐regulated learning research and development. Practitioner notesWhat is already known about this topic By providing personalized and learner‐centric adaptive learning environments (ADLEs), adaptive learning technology can support and foster self‐regulated learning (SRL) practices. It is possible to create a more student‐centred and effective learning environment by combining adaptive learning and collaborative learning. Socially shared regulatory activities can involve planning, monitoring, controlling and reflecting on a group's learning processes. What this paper adds Provides a systematic literature review of empirical evidence on ADLEs, SRL and socially shared regulation of learning (SSRL) in collaborative contexts. Summarizes the insights on (S)SRL through ADLEs in collaborative learning. Identifies challenges and opportunities for ADLEs to support (S)SRL in collaborative learning. Implications for practice and/or policy Learning analytics and educational technology researchers will be able to use the systematic review as a guide for future research. Learning analytics and educational technology practitioners will be able to use the systematic review as a summary of the field's current state.

Adoption of smart farm networks: a translational process to inform digital agricultural technologies

AbstractDue to natural phenomena like global warming and climate change, agricultural production is increasingly faced with threats that transcend farm boundaries. Management practices at the landscape or community level are often required to adequately respond to these new challenges (e.g., pest migration). Such decision-making at a community or beyond-farm level—i.e., practices that are jointly developed by farmers within a community—can be aided by computing and communications technology. In this study, we employ a translational research process to examine the social and behavioral drivers of adoption of smart and connected farm networks among commodity crop farmers in the United States. We implement focus groups and questionnaires to bring to the fore views on the use of digital technologies in collaborative contexts. We find that participating farmers are concerned with several issues about the potential features of the network (e.g., the ability to ensure data validity while maintaining data privacy) and the nature of their interactions with the various stakeholders involved in the network management. The participatory approach we adopt helps provide insights into the process of developing technologies that are both actionable and trusted by potential end users.

Balanced or imbalanced, that is the question: The effect of R&D/marketing power structure on new product development time

Accelerating new product development (NPD) to gain a first-mover advantage is crucial in today's competitive business landscape. This paper aims to examine the effective power structure in NPD projects through the lens of two divergent theoretical perspectives: Information Processing Theory (IPT) and Resource Dependence Theory (RDT). While IPT suggests the benefit of a balanced decision-making power among various subunits, RDT advocates for a concentrated decision power for faster consensus and efficiency. Our research specifically investigates whether a balanced or imbalanced R&D/marketing power structure is more conducive to accelerating NPD time. This focus stems from the recognition that the interplay between R&D and marketing is critical in shaping NPD outcomes, though we acknowledge the broader context of multifunctional collaboration in NPD, including aspects like manufacturing. The paper tests two competing hypotheses: one advocating a balanced R&D/marketing power structure as per IPT, and the other supporting a dominant R&D/marketing power structure in line with RDT. We surveyed project leaders, R&D, and marketing personnel from 126 NPD projects across 87 Taiwanese firms. The empirical results significantly endorse the balanced R&D/marketing power structure hypothesis, suggesting that a harmonious collaboration between these two key subunits can expedite NPD processes. Our findings contribute to both academic research and managerial practice by offering nuanced insights into optimizing power structures within NPD teams, particularly highlighting the efficacy of a balanced R&D/marketing approach in the context of the prevalent theories.
