Design and optimization of a compact quasi-isochronous 180-deg transport arc with suppressed CSR-induced emittance growth

Preserving the beam quality of a high-brightness electron beam is a noteworthy issue when delivering the electron bunch through a beam transfer line. In a beam transfer line with a large deflection angle, e.g., a 180-deg transport arc comprised of a large amount of dipoles, emission of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) can lead to transverse emittance dilution. In addition, the longitudinal dispersion may cause undesirable bunch length variation. Both effects can degrade beam quality. Nevertheless, design and optimization of a 180-deg transport arc that can be well applied to practical applications is a challenging problem, considering the practical nonlinear effects of a real lattice and the contributions of transient CSR at the dipole edges and CSR in the subsequent drifts. In this study, we present the design and optimization of a compact 180-deg transport arc comprised of multi-triple-bend achromat (TBA) cells, aiming at suppressing the CSR-induced emittance growth and avoiding bunch length variation simultaneously. The TBA cells and optics along the arc are adjusted to suppress the CSR-induced emittance growth and bunch length variation cell by cell, after which a multi-objective optimization of the arc is conducted. Practical considerations including lattice nonlinear effects and a full one-dimensional CSR model (including transient CSR and CSR in drifts) are taken into account.

Accelerated Deep Reinforcement Learning for Fast Feedback of Beam Dynamics at KARA

Coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) is generated when the electron bunch length is in the order of the magnitude of the wavelength of the emitted radiation. The self-interaction of short electron bunches with their own electromagnetic fields changes the longitudinal beam dynamics significantly. Above a certain current threshold, the micro-bunching instability develops, characterized by the appearance of distinguishable substructures in the longitudinal phase space of the bunch. To stabilize the CSR emission, a real-time feedback control loop based on reinforcement learning (RL) is proposed. Informed by the available THz diagnostics, the feedback is designed to act on the radio frequency (RF) system of the storage ring to mitigate the micro-bunching dynamics. To satisfy low-latency requirements given by the longitudinal beam dynamics, the RL controller has been implemented on hardware (FPGA). In this article, a real-time feedback loop architecture and its performance is presented and compared with a software implementation using Keras-RL on CPU/GPU. The results obtained with the CSR simulation Inovesa demonstrate that the functionality of both platforms is equivalent. The training performance of the hardware implementation is similar to software solution, while it outperforms the Keras-RL implementation by an order of magnitude. The presented RL hardware controller is considered as an essential platform for the development of intelligent CSR control systems.

Parallelized Vlasov-Fokker-Planck solver for desktop personal computers

The numerical solution of the Vlasov-Fokker-Planck equation is a well established method to simulate the dynamics, including the self-interaction with its own wake field, of an electron bunch in a storage ring. In this paper we present Inovesa, a modularly extensible program that uses OpenCL to massively parallelize the computation. It allows a standard desktop PC to work with appropriate accuracy and yield reliable results within minutes. We provide numerical stability-studies over a wide parameter range and compare our numerical findings to known results. Simulation results for the case of coherent synchrotron radiation will be compared to measurements that probe the effects of the micro-bunching instability occurring in the short bunch operation at ANKA. It will be shown that the impedance model based on the shielding effect of two parallel plates can not only describe the instability threshold, but also the presence of multiple regimes that show differences in the emission of coherent synchrotron radiation.

Transverse emittance-preserving arc compressor for high-brightness electron beam-based light sources and colliders

Bunch length magnetic compression is used in high-brightness linacs driving free-electron lasers (FELs) and particle colliders to increase the peak current of the injected beam. To date, it is performed in dedicated insertions made of few degrees bending magnets and the compression factor is limited by the degradation of the beam transverse emittance owing to emission of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR). We reformulate the known concept of CSR-driven optics balance for the general case of varying bunch length and demonstrate, through analytical and numerical results, that a 500 pC charge beam can be time-compressed in a periodic 180 deg arc at 2.4 GeV beam energy and lower, by a factor of up to 45, reaching peak currents of up to 2 kA and with a normalized emittance growth at the rad level. The proposed solution offers new schemes of beam longitudinal gymnastics; an application to an energy recovery linac driving FEL is discussed.

Saturation of the laser-induced narrowband coherent synchrotron radiation process: Experimental observation at a storage ring

We study the efficiency limitation affecting laser-induced coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) at high laser power. Experiments are made on the UVSOR-II storage ring in conditions of narrowband terahertz CSR emission. While, at moderate power, CSR power increases quadratically with laser power, a noticeable decrease in efficiency and eventually a decrease in CSR power is observed experimentally at high power. Details of the underlying process are analyzed numerically. As the saturation effect depends almost instantaneously on the laser intensity, the saturation occurs locally in longitudinal space. This has important consequences on the modulation pattern induced on the electron bunch.

Cancellation of Coherent Synchrotron Radiation Kicks with Optics Balance

Minimizing transverse emittance is essential in linear accelerators designed to deliver very high brightness electron beams. Emission of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR), as a contributing factor to emittance degradation, is an important phenomenon to this respect. A manner in which to cancel this perturbation by imposing certain symmetric conditions on the electron transport system has been suggested.We first expand on this idea by quantitatively relating the beam Courant-Snyder parameters to the emittance growth and by providing a general scheme of CSR suppression with asymmetric optics, provided it is properly balanced along the line. We present the first experimental evidence of this cancellation with the resultant optics balance of multiple CSR kicks: the transverse emittance of a 500 pC, sub-picosecond, high brightness electron beam is being preserved after the passage through the achromatic transfer line of the FERMI@Elettra free electron laser, and emittance growth is observed when the optics balance is intentionally broken. We finally show the agreement between the theoretical model and the experimental results. This study holds the promise of compact dispersive lines with relatively large bending angles, thus reducing costs for future electron facilities.

Transverse emittance preservation during bunch compression in the Fermi free electron laser

A characterization of the transverse emittance of a 200 pC, 6 ps long electron bunch has been performed in the Fermi@Elettra Free Electron Laser (FEL) first bunch compressor area. This region includes a magnetic bunch length compressor, diagnostics, and quadrupole magnets. The beam is time compressed in one stage, without linearization of the longitudinal phase space. Some growth of the normalized emittance has been measured in the compressor area. To understand this effect, we have investigated mechanisms of emittance growth such as coherent synchrotron radiation emission, chromatic aberration, and spurious dispersion. We show that careful optics control inside the compressor is essential for emittance growth reduction. The final configuration of one-stage magnetic compression limits the emittance to values below the design goal of 2 mm mrad, up to a compression factor of about 5. This machine configuration has been adopted to optimize FEL radiation output at wavelengths in the range 30--60 nm.

Ultra-short coherent terahertz radiation from ultra-short dips in electron bunches circulating in a storage ring

Terahertz (THz) coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) is emitted not only from ultra-short electron bunches, but also from electron bunches with micro-structures. Formation of micro-structures at the sub-picosecond scale in electron bunches by a laser slicing technique is experimentally studied through observation of the THz CSR. The THz CSR spectrum was found to depend strongly on the intensity and the pulse width of the laser. The results agreed qualitatively with a numerical simulation. It was suggested that the evolution of the micro-structure during CSR emission is important under some experimental conditions.

Transverse-Longitudinal Coupling Effect in Laser Bunch Slicing

We report turn-by-turn observation of coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) produced by the laser bunch slicing technique at an electron storage ring operated with a small momentum compaction factor. CSR emission was intermittent, and its interval depended strongly on the betatron tune. This peculiar behavior of the CSR could be interpreted as a result of coupling between the transverse and longitudinal motion of the electrons. This is the first observation of such an effect, which would be important not only for controlling the CSR emission but also for generating and transporting ultrashort electron bunches or electron bunches with microdensity structures in advanced accelerators.

A model describing stable coherent synchrotron radiation in storage rings.

We present a model describing high power stable broadband coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) in the terahertz frequency region in an electron storage ring. The model includes distortion of bunch shape from the synchrotron radiation (SR), which enhances higher frequency coherent emission, and limits to stable emission due to an instability excited by the SR wakefield. It gives a quantitative explanation of several features of the recent observations of CSR at the BESSY II storage ring. We also use this model to optimize the performance of a source for stable CSR emission.

CIRCE: a dedicated storage ring for coherent THz synchrotron radiation

We present the concepts for an electron storage ring dedicated to and optimized for the production of stable coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) over the far-infrared terahertz wavelength range from 200 μm to about 1 cm. CIRCE (Coherent InfraRed CEnter) will be a 66 m circumference ring located on top of the ALS booster synchrotron shielding tunnel and using the existing ALS injector. This location provides enough floor space for both the CIRCE ring, its required shielding, and numerous beamlines. We briefly outline a model for CSR emission in which a static bunch distortion induced by the synchrotron radiation field is used to significantly extend the stable CSR emission towards higher frequencies. This model has been verified with experimental CSR results. We present the calculated CIRCE photon flux where a gain of 6–9 orders of magnitude is shown compared to existing far-IR sources. Additionally, the particular design of the dipole vacuum chamber has been optimized to allow an excellent transmission of these far-infrared wavelengths. We believe that the CIRCE source can be constructed for a modest cost.

Spontaneous coherent microwave emission and the sawtooth instability in a compact storage ring

Strong evidence for self-excited emission of coherent synchrotron radiation in the microwave spectral region was observed at the Synchrotron Ultraviolet Radiation Facility (SURF III) electron storage ring at the NIST. The microwave emission between 25 and 35 mm was dominated by intense bursts of radiation. The intensity enhancement during these bursts was on the order of 10 000 to 50 000 over the incoherent value. The shape, width, and period of the bursts depend strongly on the operational parameters of the storage ring. Coherent microwave emission was observed only when the beam was unstable, namely, during bunch-length relaxation oscillations. We report on the measurements of the microwave bursts, and correlate the data with signals from a beam monitor electrode and photodiode detector. The coherent enhancement of the radiation intensity is ascribed to spontaneous self-induced microbunching of the electrons within the bunch.

Effects of a 500 Mc s −1 additional cavity on spontaneous coherent synchrotron oscillations in the Super-ACO storage ring

An additional 500 Mc s −1 cavity, fifth harmonics of the main cavity, was installed on the Super-ACO storage ring in order to shorten the bunch length. This cavity was introduced to obtain shorter wavelengths in the UV for the FEL and shorter flashes of light for the experiments using the two-bunches-mode functioning for the time-resolved measurements. Spontaneous coherent synchrotron oscillations (SCSO) were profoundly modified by the presence of this cavity. These instabilities are probably the consequence of the formation of micro-bunches. The vanishing of these micro-bunches is associated to the emission of coherent synchrotron radiation, which gives the SCSO a cyclic character. The identification of the resonant elements responsible for these cyclic instabilities can help us to suppress or substantial ameliorate the SCSO by acting selectively on these resonant elements. This method can be applied to other storage or damping rings that show the same type of instabilities.

Saturation of the synchrotron megamaser

The central engine of an active galactic nucleus with accretion shocks in a high-density and high-temperature plasma is a natural site for the relevant physical processes that may lead to coherent emission of synchrotron radiation, called synchrotron maser (SM). The acceleration of particles to a quasi-monoenergetic distribution function is discussed. Expressions for the width and the spectral shape of the SM line are derived. Some properties and conditions that can restrict the operation of an SM are investigated. Detailed calculations of the saturation of the radiation output from a region in space containing an SM are presented. This is coupled to the relaxation of the initially peaked distribution of relativistic electrons to a plateau. Both the stationary state and the time-dependent case are considered. Saturated optical depths and gain factors are derived for various geometries of the emission region. The possibility of molecular line amplification to megamaser luminosities by the SM is also considered. 47 refs.
