Effects of cognitive training and behavior modification on aggressive behavior and sleep quality in schizophrenia

BackgroundSchizophrenia (SCZ) is linked to a heightened risk of impulsive aggression and disturbances in sleep patterns. Cognitive and social cognitive impairments have been connected to aggression, with social cognitive deficits appearing to play a more immediate role. In this investigation, we conducted a retrospective analysis of the impact of cognitive training and sleep interventions on aggressive behavior and the quality of sleep among individuals with SCZ who were hospitalized.MethodsThis study divided 80 hospitalized patients into two groups according to medical advice, namely the normal group and the study group. The control group received routine drug treatment and education; The research group implemented cognitive training and sleep intervention based on the normal group. Collect basic clinical data, aggressive behavior indicators, and sleep quality indicators.ResultsThere is no difference in the basic information statistics between the two groups. Both groups can reduce aggressive behavior and improve sleep quality. In the study group, there was a notable decrease in aggressive behavior compared to the control group. Furthermore, the sleep quality in the study group exhibited significant improvement when compared to the control group.ConclusionCognitive training and sleep intervention have been proven to be effective nonpharmacological treatments, effectively reducing aggressive behavior and improving sleep quality.

The effects of computerized cognitive training in older adults' cognitive performance and biomarkers of structural brain aging.

Cognitive Training (CT) has been investigated as a means of delaying age-related cognitive decline in older adults. However, its impact on biomarkers of age-related structural brain atrophy has rarely been investigated, leading to a gap in our understanding of the linkage between improvements in cognition and brain plasticity. This study aimed to explore the impact of CT on cognitive performance and brain structure in older adults. 124 cognitively normal older adults recruited from two study sites were randomly assigned to either an adaptive CT (n=60) or a casual game training (Active Control, AC, n= 64). After 10 weeks of training, CT participants showed greater improvements in the overall cognitive composite score (Cohen's d=.66, p<.01) with non-significant benefits after 6 months from the completion of training (Cohen's d=.36, p=.094). The CT group showed significant maintenance of the caudate volume as well as significant maintained fractional anisotropy (FA) in the left Internal Capsule (IC) and in left Superior Longitudinal Fasciculus (SLF) compared to the AC group. The AC group displayed an age-related decrease in these metrics of brain structure. Results from this multi-site clinical trial demonstrate that the CT intervention improves cognitive performance and helps maintain caudate volume and integrity of white matter regions that are associated with cognitive control, adding to our understanding of the changes in brain structure contributing to changes in cognitive performance from adaptive CT.

Comparative efficacy of seven nonpharmacological interventions on global cognition in older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment: a network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials

To maintain current cognitive function and access greater cognitive reserves, nonpharmacological interventions may be a viable alternative for older adults with or without cognitive impairment. This study aimed to compare different nonpharmacological interventions for enhancing global cognition, including mind–body exercise, physical exercise, non-invasive brain stimulation, cognitive training intervention (CTI), acutherapy (ACU), meditation, and music therapy, by applying a network meta-analysis (NMA). Sixty-one randomized controlled trials evaluating the efficacy of interventions on global cognition in older adults with or without mild cognitive decline were selected. An NMA was conducted to compare the efficacy of different nonpharmacological interventions. The NMA revealed that mind–body exercise (standardized mean difference, 1.384; 95% confidence interval, 0.777–1.992); ACU (1.283; 0.478–2.088); meditation (0.910; 0.097–1.724); non-invasive brain stimulation (1.242; 0.254–2.230); CTI (1.269; 0.736–1.802); and physical exercise (0.977; 0.212–1.742), showed positive effects compared to passive controls. There were no significant differences between the efficacies of other interventions. Nonpharmacological interventions may potentially enhance and maintain global cognition through various pathways, such as memorizing movements and enhancing brain plasticity by reducing stress in the older adult population. Additional studies are needed to clarify the impact of other variables, including intervention methods or psychological variables.

Learning ratio performance on a brief visual learning and memory test moderates cognitive training gains in Double Decision task in healthy older adults.

Cognitive training using a visual speed-of-processing task, called the Useful Field of View (UFOV) task, reduced dementia risk and reduced decline in activities of daily living at a 10-year follow-up in older adults. However, there was variability in the achievement of cognitive gains after cognitive training across studies, suggesting moderating factors. Learning trials of visual and verbal learning tasks recruit similar cognitive abilities and have overlapping neural correlates with speed-of-processing/working memory tasks and therefore could serve as potential moderators of cognitive training gains. This study explored the association between the Hopkins Verbal Learning Test-Revised (HVLT-R) and Brief Visuospatial Memory Test-Revised (BVMT-R) learning with a commercial UFOV task called Double Decision. Through a secondary analysis of a clinical trial, we assessed the moderation of HVLT-R and BVMT-R learning on Double Decision improvement after a 3-month speed-of-processing/attention and working memory cognitive training intervention in a sample of 75 cognitively healthy older adults. Multiple linear regressions showed that better baseline Double Decision performance was significantly associated with better BVMT-R learning (β = - .303). This association was not significant for HVLT-R learning (β = - .142). Moderation analysis showed that those with poorer BVMT-R learning improved the most on the Double Decision task after cognitive training. This suggests that healthy older adults who perform below expectations on cognitive tasks related to the training task may show the greatest training gains. Future cognitive training research studying visual speed-of-processing interventions should account for differing levels of visuospatial learning at baseline, as this could impact the magnitude of training outcomes and efficacy of the intervention.

The Long and Winding Road to Real-Life Experiments: Remote Assessment of Executive Functions with Computerized Games-Results from 8 Years of Naturalistic Interventions.

Mate Marote is an open-access cognitive training software aimed at children between 4 and 8 years old. It consists of a set of computerized games specifically tailored to train and evaluate Executive Functions (EF), a class of processes critical for purposeful, goal-directed behavior, including working memory, planning, flexibility, and inhibitory control. Since 2008, several studies were performed with this software at children's own schools in interventions supervised in-person by cognitive scientists. After 2015, we incorporated naturalistic, yet controlled, interventions with children's own teachers' help. The platform includes a battery of standardized tests, disguised as games, to assess children's EF. The main question that emerges is whether the results, obtained with these traditional tasks but conducted without the presence of researchers, are comparable to those widely reported in the literature, that were obtained in more supervised settings. In this study, we were able to replicate the expected difficulty and age effects in at least one of the analyzed dependent variables of each employed test. We also report important discrepancies between the expected and the observed response time patterns, specifically for time-constrained tasks. We hereby discuss the benefits and setbacks of a new possible strategy for this type of assessment in naturalistic settings. We conclude that this battery of established EF tasks adapted for its remote usage is appropriate to measure the expected mental processes in naturalistic settings, enriching opportunities to upscale cognitive training interventions at schools. These types of tools can constitute a concerted strategy to bring together educational neuroscience research and real-life practice.

Development of a Cognitive Training Support Programme for prevention of dementia and cognitive decline in at-risk older adults

BackgroundEvidence for the beneficial effects of cognitive training on cognitive function and daily living activities is inconclusive. Variable study quality and design does not allow for robust comparisons/meta-analyses of different cognitive training programmes. Fairly low adherence to extended cognitive training interventions in clinical trials has been reported.AimsThe aim of further developing a Cognitive Training Support Programme (CTSP) is to supplement the Computerised Cognitive Training (CCT) intervention component of the multimodal Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER), which is adapted to different cultural, regional and economic settings within the Word-Wide FINGERS (WW-FINGERS) Network. The main objectives are to improve adherence to cognitive training through a behaviour change framework and provide information about cognitive stimulation, social engagement and lifestyle risk factors for dementia.MethodsSix CTSP sessions were re-designed covering topics including (1) CCT instructions and tasks, (2) Cognitive domains: episodic memory, executive function and processing speed, (3) Successful ageing and compensatory strategies, (4) Cognitive stimulation and engagement, (5) Wellbeing factors affecting cognition (e.g., sleep and mood), (6) Sensory factors. Session content will be related to everyday life, with participant reflection and behaviour change techniques incorporated, e.g., strategies, goal-setting, active planning to enhance motivation, and adherence to the CCT and in relevant lifestyle changes.ConclusionsThrough interactive presentations promoting brain health, the programme provides for personal reflection that may enhance capability, opportunity and motivation for behaviour change. This will support adherence to the CCT within multidomain intervention trials. Efficacy of the programme will be evaluated through participant feedback and adherence metrics.

Enhancing Cognitive Function in Older Adults through Processing Speed Training: Implications for Cognitive Health Awareness.

It may be possible to enhance adults' cognitive health and promote healthy aging through processing speed training using the Useful Field of View (UFOV) related activities and software. This study investigated the impact of utilizing UFOV on processing speed improvement in older adults in response to the growing global attention on cognitive health and aging issues. In this quasi-experimental study, 22 individuals (mean age ± SD = 71.9 ± 4.8) participated in the experimental group, and 20 community-based participants (mean age ± SD = 67.1 ± 4.8) were in the control group. The intervention involved ten sessions of UFOV training, each lasting 60 min, conducted twice a week for the experimental group while the control group engaged in volunteer service activities. Measurements of Counting Back, Fabrica, Double-Decision, and Hawkeye were administered to all participants before and after the intervention. The results showed significant improvements in the experimental group for the four measurements (p ≤ 0.01, 0.05, 0.001, 0.001) and non-significant gains in the control group (p ≥ 0.05) for all. Furthermore, mixed repeated-measures ANOVA analysis, with time 1 pre-test measures as the covariate, revealed significant interaction effects between time and group for all measurement indicators (p = 0.05, 0.01, 0.05) except for Fabrica (p > 0.05). In conclusion, these findings support the effectiveness of UFOV cognitive training interventions in enhancing specific cognitive abilities.

Effects of square dance exercise on cognitive function in elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment: the mediating role of balance ability and executive function

BackgroundSquare dancing is a kind of aerobic fitness exercise without environmental restrictions that yields many benefits for physical and mental health; this exercise is popular among middle-aged and elderly people in China and in these populations in other countries. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of square dance exercise on the overall cognitive function of elderly individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and to research its mechanisms.MethodsA total of 60 elderly people with MCI (60–69 years old) without square dance experience were selected and randomly divided into an experimental group (n = 30) and a control group (n = 30). The experimental group participated in square dance exercise for 12 weeks, while the control group maintained their original lifestyle habits. One week before and after the intervention period, the overall cognitive function, physical fitness, and executive function of both groups were measured.ResultsAccording to the results, square dance exercise directly improved the overall cognitive function of elderly individuals with MCI and indirectly affected overall cognitive function through the mediating effects of balance ability and executive function.ConclusionsSquare dance exercise represents a nonpharmacological intervention for the prevention and treatment of MCI. Importantly, it is best to combine this exercise with other forms of physical exercise and comprehensive treatment programs such as cognitive training, social interaction, and psychological intervention to realize its maximum effect.

Combining mindfulness and cognitive training in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder: study protocol of a pilot randomized controlled trial (the NeuroMind study).

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) has a global mean prevalence of 5%. Cognitive Training (CT) and Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBIs) have shown promising results in managing ADHD symptoms, but they are not its Treatment-As-Usual (TAU). The NeuroMind Study aims to evaluate the preliminary effectiveness and feasibility of three interventions: Mindfulness for Health (M4H), CT using the NeuronUP® platform (CT), and a combination of both, Mindfulness Cognitive Training (MCT). There is empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of the M4H and NeuronUP® platform; however, this study explores for the first time the effectiveness of MCT and CT, as well as the integration of M4H into TAU. The objectives of this 5-month Randomized Controlled Trial (RCT) are: (1) To analyze the preliminary effectiveness and feasibility of M4H, CT or a combination of both (MCT) added to TAU for children with ADHD; (2) To evaluate the role of psychological process variables (mindfulness and emotional regulation) as mediators of 5-month follow-up clinical outcomes; (3) To preliminarily explore whether specific sociodemographic and clinical characteristics can predict the short-and medium-term clinical response to the specific treatments. Participants will be 120 children (7 to 12 years) with ADHD recruited at Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Sant Joan de Déu Terres de Lleida (Spain) randomly allocated to one of the four study arms: TAU vs. TAU + CT vs. TAU + M4H vs. TAU + MCT. An assessment to collect ADHD symptoms, Executive Functions (EF), comorbid symptoms and global functioning will be conducted pre-intervention, post-intervention (2 months after baseline) and at the 5-month follow-up. Linear mixed models and mediational models will be computed. If the preliminary effectiveness and feasibility of the MCT are demonstrated, this study could be a preliminary basis to do a full RCT with a larger sample to definitively validate the intervention. The impact of a tDCS and cognitive training intervention on task-based functional connectivity.

Declines in several cognitive domains, most notably processing speed, occur in non-pathological aging. Given the exponential growth of the older adult population, declines in cognition serve as a significant public health issue that must be addressed. Promising studies have shown that cognitive training in older adults, particularly using the useful field of view (UFOV) paradigm, can improve cognition with moderate to large effect sizes. Additionally, meta-analyses have found that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive form of brain stimulation, can improve cognition in attention/processing speed and working memory. However, only a handful of studies have looked at concomitant tDCS and cognitive training, usually with short interventions and small sample sizes. The current study assessed the effect of a tDCS (active versus sham) and a 3-month cognitive training intervention on task-based functional connectivity during completion of the UFOV task in a large older adult sample (N = 153). We found significant increased functional connectivity between the left and right pars triangularis (the ROIs closest to the electrodes) following active, but not sham tDCS. Additionally, we see trending behavioral improvements associated with these functional connectivity changes in the active tDCS group, but not sham. Collectively, these findings suggest that tDCS and cognitive training can be an effective modulator of task-based functional connectivity above and beyond a cognitive training intervention alone.

The effect of cognitive training on children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder: A meta-analysis

Objective This document is a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effect of cognitive training interventions on attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase from the inception of each database to April 28, 2022. Data were analyzed using Stata 15 software. The risk of bias assessment was conducted using five domains from the Cochrane Collaborations tool. Results A total of 10 studies with 446 children with ADHD were included. The results showed that cognitive training was effective in improving attention symptoms [SMD= −0.78 (95% CI: −1.46, −0.1)] and executive function [SMD = −0.3 (95% CI: −0.56, −0.05)] in children with ADHD compared to controls. No significant difference in the degree of improvement in hyperactivity/impulsivity with cognitive training compared to the control group [SMD = −0.65 (95% CI: −1.35, 0.05)]. In addition, subgroup analyses also found that cognitive training significantly improved attention in children with ADHD <10 years of age [SMD = −1.3 (95% CI: −2.58, −0.02)] and children with ADHD with length of training >30 days [SMD = −0.94 (95% CI: −1.81, −0.07)] compared to controls. Conclusion This meta-analysis found that the beneficial effects of cognitive training on attention (particularly for children with ADHD <10 years old and >30 days of training) and executive function in children with ADHD, but not on hyperactivity/impulsivity.

Cognitive training interventions for substance use disorders: what they really offer?

Cognitive training (CT) has emerged as a potential therapeutic approach for substance use disorders (SUD), aiming to restore cognitive impairments and potentially improve treatment outcomes. However, despite promising findings, the effectiveness of CT in real-life applications and its impact on SUD symptoms has remained unclear. This perspective article critically examines the existing evidence on CT for SUD and explores the challenges and gaps in implementing CT interventions. It emphasizes the need for clarity in expectations and decision-making from a public health standpoint, advocating for comprehensive studies that consider a broader range of SUD consequences and utilize measures that reflect patients' actual experiences.

Effects of Virtual Reality Physical and Cognitive Training Intervention On Cognitive Abilities of Elders with Mild Cognitive Impairment.

Virtual reality (VR) technology has become increasingly used for assessment and intervention in the neuroscience field. We aimed to investigate the effects of a VR Training System, named VRADA (VR Exercise App for Dementia and Alzheimer's Patients), on the cognitive functioning of older people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). In this intervention study, 122 older adults with MCI were randomly assigned to five groups (the VRADA group (n = 28), a bike group (n = 11), a physical exercise group (n = 24), a mixed group (physical and cognitive exercise) (n = 31), and a non-contact control group (n = 28). The VRADA group underwent 32 physical and cognitive training sessions, performed 2 or 3 times weekly for 12 weeks in the VR environment. All participants had detailed neuropsychological assessments before and after intervention. A series of linear regression models revealed that the VRADA group showed improvement or no deterioration in cognitive decline in global cognitive function (MMSE), verbal memory (Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test and WAIS forward test), and executive functions, mental flexibility (Trail Making Test B). This interventionstudy indicates that the VRADA system improves the cognitive function of elders with MCI.

Differential Outcomes Training of Visuospatial Memory: A Gamified Approach Using a Socially Assistive Robot

This study represents the first stage of evaluating whether cognitive training interventions may be facilitated by the presence of a socially assistive robot (SAR) and gamification. Our experimental setup involves using a SAR providing feedback to a gamified visuospatial working memory task, administered according to a differential outcomes training (DOT) protocol. The study’s main objective was to investigate whether performance and attitude towards the task would be affected by different robotic setups (none, simulated or physical) and in relation to different challenge levels. We measured performance accuracy on the gamified visuospatial memory task and self-reported affective ratings, which are relevant for assessing attitude towards the task and providing indicators to the potential for using a SAR for a longer-term cognitive intervention. Additionally, we conducted exploratory analyses of eye movement strategies for memory encoding during the task. The results demonstrated a significant differential outcomes effect (DOE) on memory performance accuracy, regardless of Robot type and Challenge level, providing evidence that a DOE can still be obtained when a SAR interacts with participants. Moreover, the results from the affective ratings revealed that participants accompanied by the physical robot reported lower levels of stress and increased levels of control. Our results demonstrate, for the first time, a DOE using a SAR in a gamified context. This result, coupled with positive subjective reporting of the human–robot interactive experience of participants, demonstrates the potential for using a SAR to: (i) promote positive attitudes for a DOT-based cognitive intervention, without (ii) negatively affecting task performance.

INCLUSION OF HEARING AND VISION IMPAIRMENTS IN COGNITIVE TRAINING INTERVENTIONS WITH OLDER ADULTS

Abstract Cognitive training intervention implementation and efficacy should be evaluated among representative samples, including those at highest risk of cognitive decline. Hearing and vision impairments are prevalent among older adults and confer an increased risk of cognitive decline/dementia. Whether cognitive training interventions enroll and are designed to include this important subgroup is unknown. A scoping review of PubMed and PsycINFO was conducted to examine the inclusion of older adults with hearing and/or vision impairment in cognitive training interventions. Eligible articles included English-language cognitive training randomized controlled trials and a study population that was cognitively unimpaired, aged ≥55-years, and community-dwelling. Among the 130 articles in the review, 103(79%) were cognitive training and 27(21%) were multimodal interventions that included cognitive training. Over half the trials systematically excluded participants with hearing and/or vision impairment (n=60, 58%). Few studies measured and reported participant hearing and/or vision impairment (cognitive: n=16, 16%; multimodal: n=3, 11%) or reported incorporating low hearing/vision accessibility features into intervention design (cognitive: n=7, 7%; multimodal: n=0, 0%). Greater representation of older adults with hearing and/or vision impairment in cognitive training interventions is needed and can be achieved by strengthening measurement and reporting of participant hearing and vision, minimizing barriers to participation by increasing accessibility in recruitment and intervention design, and intentional inclusion of older adults with hearing and/or vision impairment. With greater representation of older adults with hearing and/or vision impairment, studies can better evaluate group-specific differences in training effect and begin to tailor interventions to potentially maximize benefit.

LOCATION MODERATES THE EFFECT OF COGNITIVE TRAINING ON CRASH RISK OVER 20 YEARS: AN ANALYSIS OF THE ACTIVE STUDY

Abstract Driving is a critical everyday function that helps older adults remain independent. The Advanced Cognitive Training in Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) study has shown cognitive training improves driving safety outcomes for older adults. Few studies have examined the longitudinal effects of cognitive training on crash risk beyond 5 years. To address this empirical gap, we aimed to determine the effects of cognitive training on crash risk over 20 years, and how urbanicity moderates these relationships. Using participants from the no-contact control and intervention (speed of processing, memory, and reasoning training) groups in the ACTIVE study (n=2170) and state-recorded crash reports, cox proportional hazards models were used to examine the effect of three cognitive training interventions as predictors of time to first at-fault crash over 20 years. Participants (mean age 73, 73% White, 23% Male) reported driving 90.6 miles/week on average and 12.6% experienced an at-fault crash. Overall, speed of processing training was the only intervention related to lower crash risk, but this varied by urbanicity. Namely, speed of processing training was related to lower crash risk for individuals living in rural environments (HR=.16, 95% CI [.04-.73], p=.018) but not for individuals in urban environments (HR=.89, 95% CI [.54-1.50], p=.679). Findings highlight the safety benefits of speed of processing training for older drivers living in rural environments where more fatal crashes occur. However, interventions are still needed to improve safety in urban environments where more crashes occur generally. Consideration of location in future interventions may help improve safe driving for older adults.

THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN 10-YEAR CHANGES IN COGNITIVE ABILITY AND SUBSEQUENT MORTALITY: FINDINGS FROM THE ACTIVE

Abstract Cognitive ability and cognitive decline have been linked with mortality in older adults. However, little was understood about the role of cognitive interventions on mortality outcomes in this population. Using twenty-year follow-up data from the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) trial, we examined the association between cognitive change and mortality risk, and the effect of ACTIVE cognitive training (memory, reasoning, and speed of processing) on mortality risk. Mortality was ascertained through linkage to the National Death Index database. To model time to death as a function of cognitive change and training effect, we used shared growth-survival models with simultaneously estimated latent intercepts and slopes as predictors. Among the 2802 participants, 2021 died on or before the year 2019 (72.1%). Both higher baseline level and slower decline in global cognition were associated with lower hazards of all-cause mortality after adjusting for covariates (HR = 0.68, 95% CI 0.58, 0.79; HR = 0.42, 95% CI 0.40, 0.44, respectively). We did not observe any significant effects of ACTIVE cognitive training in memory, reasoning, or speed of processing on all-cause mortality. Our findings demonstrated the association between the trajectory of cognitive change and mortality among older adults, independent of cognitive training interventions. More work is needed to identify relevant timing as well as modalities of non-pharmaceutical interventions that can promote healthy longevity.

Multimodal Exercise and Cognitive Training Program Improves Cognitive Function in Amnestic Mild Cognitive Impairment

To investigate the preliminary efficacy of a combined physical exercise + cognitive training intervention for older adults with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI). Randomized clinical trial. Veteran Affairs Hospital, Palo Alto, CA. Sample included 72 community-dwelling volunteers (mean age 72.4 ± 9.5) diagnosed with aMCI. Participants were randomized to either a combined aerobic and resistance exercise + cognitive training (CARE+CT) or stretching exercise + CT (SE+CT). Primary outcomes included intervention specific assessments of word list and name-face recall. Secondary cognitive outcomes included standardized composite scores that reflect cognitive domains (e.g., learning and memory, executive function, processing speed, visuospatial ability, language). Secondary physiological outcomes included VO2 max and functional capacity (e.g., distance walked 6-minute walk test). APOE and BDNF were determined from whole blood samples. Controlling for age and employment status, linear mixed effects models revealed that all participants experienced significant improvement in the delayed recall of word list, learning and memory and executive function. Only the CARE+CT condition had significant improvement in processing speed and functional capacity. APOE4 status impacted cognitive benefits of those in the SE+CT condition. Results provide preliminary support for combined exercise and cognitive training interventions for older adults with aMCI. Vision and Hearing Difficulty as a Modifier of the Effects of Cognitive Training Over 5 and 10 Years in Older Adults

AbstractBackgroundCognitive training interventions are delivered visually and/or aurally. Whether sensory loss modifies its effect in older adults is unknown. We assessed differences in the effect of the Advanced Cognitive Training for Independent and Vital Elderly (ACTIVE) Study, a randomized cognitive training intervention trial, by self‐reported vision and hearing difficulty.MethodsParticipants (65 years and older, cognitively/functionally healthy) were randomized to cognitive training in memory, reasoning, or speed of processing or a no‐contact control. Composite scores were created using multiple cognitive assessments in memory, reasoning, and speed of processing. Self‐reported near vision difficulty was defined as reading ordinary print in the newspaper (no difficulty/a little or some difficulty), and hearing loss was self‐reported (yes/no). Differences in the 10‐year effect of cognitive training on change in trained cognitive ability were assessed using linear mixed effect models adjusted for demographic and study design characteristics.ResultsAmong 2,788 participants, 22% reported vision difficulty and 43% reported hearing loss. Participants with sensory loss benefited from all cognitive training interventions (Figure 1); however, the magnitude of benefit of reasoning training was smaller among participants with vs. without vision difficulty (10‐year difference in reasoning ability [intervention vs. control]: vision difficulty: ‐0.25, 95% CI: [‐0.88, 0.39], no vison difficulty: 0.58, 95% CI: [0.28, 0.89]). Magnitude of benefit of memory training was greater for participants with vs. without hearing loss (10‐year difference in memory ability [intervention vs. control]: hearing difficulty: 0.17, 95% CI: [‐0.37, 0.72], no hearing difficulty: ‐0.20, 95% CI: [‐0.65,0.24]). Beneficial effect of speed of processing training was similar by sensory status.ConclusionParticipants with vision difficulty did not benefit as much from reasoning training, likely because training required more visually complex exercises (e.g., deciphering patterns across similar symbols). Memory training was more efficacious for participants with hearing loss, perhaps because training provided compensation strategies for overcoming cognitive load (increased effort for processing degraded auditory signals). Cognitive training interventions should consider sensory function in design and administration. Individuals with sensory loss have increased risk for cognitive decline and should not be excluded from cognitive training interventions as magnitude of benefit may be greater for these individuals.
