Prenatal and childhood air pollution exposure, cellular immune biomarkers, and brain connectivity in early adolescents

IntroductionAmbient air pollution is a neurotoxicant with hypothesized immune-related mechanisms. Adolescent brain structural and functional connectivity may be especially vulnerable to ambient pollution due to the refinement of large-scale brain networks during this period, which vary by sex and have important implications for cognitive, behavioral, and emotional functioning. In the current study we explored associations between air pollutants, immune markers, and structural and functional connectivity in early adolescence by leveraging cross-sectional sex-stratified data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development℠ Study®. MethodsPollutant concentrations of fine particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, and ozone were assigned to each child's primary residential address during the prenatal period and childhood (9-10 years-old) using an ensemble-based modeling approach. Data collected at 11-13 years-old included resting-state functional connectivity of the default mode, frontoparietal, and salience networks and limbic regions of interest, intracellular directional and isotropic diffusion of available white matter tracts, and markers of cellular immune activation. Using partial least squares correlation, a multivariate data-driven method that identifies important variables within latent dimensions, we investigated associations between 1) pollutants and structural and functional connectivity, 2) pollutants and immune markers, and 3) immune markers and structural and functional connectivity, in each sex separately. ResultsAir pollution exposure was related to white matter intracellular directional and isotropic diffusion at ages 11–13 years, but the direction of associations varied by sex. There were no associations between pollutants and resting-state functional connectivity at ages 11–13 years. Childhood exposure to nitrogen dioxide was negatively correlated with white blood cell count in males. Immune biomarkers were positively correlated with white matter intracellular directional diffusion in females and both white matter intracellular directional and isotropic diffusion in males. Lastly, there was a reliable negative correlation between lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio and default mode network resting-state functional connectivity in females, as well as a compromised immune marker profile associated with lower resting-state functional connectivity between the salience network and the left hippocampus in males. In post-hoc exploratory analyses, we found that the PLSC-identified white matter tracts and resting-state networks related to processing speed and cognitive control performance from the NIH Toolbox. ConclusionsWe identified novel links between childhood nitrogen dioxide and cellular immune activation in males, and brain network connectivity and immune markers in both sexes. Future research should explore the potentially mediating role of immune activity in how pollutants affect neurological outcomes as well as the potential consequences of immune-related patterns of brain connectivity in service of improved brain health for all.

Multimodal Physiological Analysis of Impact of Emotion on Cognitive Control in VR.

Cognitive control is often perplexing to elucidate and can be easily influenced by emotions. Understanding the individual cognitive control level is crucial for enhancing VR interaction and designing adaptive and self-correcting VR/AR applications. Emotions can reallocate processing resources and influence cognitive control performance. However, current research has primarily emphasized the impact of emotional valence on cognitive control tasks, neglecting emotional arousal. In this study, we comprehensively investigate the influence of emotions on cognitive control based on the arousal-valence model. A total of 26 participants are recruited, inducing emotions through VR videos with high ecological validity and then performing related cognitive control tasks. Leveraging physiological data including EEG, HRV, and EDA, we employ classification techniques such as SVM, KNN, and deep learning to categorize cognitive control levels. The experiment results demonstrate that high-arousal emotions significantly enhance users' cognitive control abilities. Utilizing complementary information among multi-modal physiological signal features, we achieve an accuracy of 84.52% in distinguishing between high and low cognitive control. Additionally, time-frequency analysis results confirm the existence of neural patterns related to cognitive control, contributing to a better understanding of the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive control in VR. Our research indicates that physiological signals measured from both the central and autonomic nervous systems can be employed for cognitive control classification, paving the way for novel approaches to improve VR/AR interactions.

Daily and ethnic discriminatory experiences and cognitive control in Mexican-origin bilingual language brokers

ABSTRACT Few studies have considered bilingualism’s impact on cognitive development within the sociolinguistic and cultural context of the immigrant communities where bilingualism is commonly practiced. In the United States, many Mexican-origin bilingual youth practice their bilingual skills by brokering (i.e. translating/interpreting between languages) for their immigrant parents who have low English proficiency. Meanwhile, these youth may also experience discrimination in their daily life. The present study focuses on Mexican-origin bilingual youth brokers (N = 334) in order to examine how discriminatory experiences (i.e. daily and ethnic discrimination) and bilingual brokering experiences captured by profiles are related to cognitive control performance (i.e. attentional control and inhibition). We found no significant direct influence of either bilingual broker profiles or discriminatory experiences on cognitive control. However, the associations between discriminatory experiences and cognitive control performance depended upon brokering experiences. Specifically, greater discrimination was associated with lower cognitive control performance among moderate brokers (with moderate bilingual experiences), but the association was attenuated among efficacious brokers (with positive bilingual experiences). Findings highlight the need to consider the sociolinguistic heterogeneity of both discriminatory experiences and language use when investigating cognitive control performance in bilinguals.

Influences of social and non-social rewards on cognitive control in childhood

The modulation of cognitive control by rewards has long been discussed, but there is scarce evidence of how social and non-social rewards influence cognitive control in childhood, especially in the preschool years. Critically, sociality has often been confounded with other important reward dimensions (e.g., tangibility) in prior studies, hence potentially misestimating the effect of social rewards. Thus, the present study re-examined the effects of social and non-social rewards on cognitive control, particularly on proactive and reactive control engagement during childhood. Thirty 5- to 6-year-olds and thirty 9- to 10-year-olds completed an AX-Continuous Performance Task (AX-CPT) during an online session in three conditions: control, social reward, and non-social (i.e., monetary) reward conditions. Social rewards increased younger and older children’s response accuracy, suggesting greater cognitive control. However, no influence on how children engage cognitive control (i.e., proactively or reactively) was observed. The provision of non-social rewards did not influence cognitive performance in either group of children. When controlling for other reward dimension, we found evidence that social rewards, but not non-social rewards, can promote cognitive control performance in childhood.

54 The Influence of Sex on Cognitive Control Performance and Frontoparietal Network Integrity in First-Episode Psychosis

Objective:Cognitive deficits in first-episode psychosis (FEP) are well documented, particularly aspects of cognitive control, which is one of the primary hypothesized functions of the frontoparietal network (FPN). The clinical features of psychotic disorders are known to differ between men and women, but little work has systematically studied neurobiological differences between the sexes, particularly in FEP. The current study aimed to examine sexual dimorphisms in structural integrity of the frontoparietal network (FPN) and its role in cognitive control in FEP.Participants and Methods:A total of 111 FEP patients (68 male, 43 female) and 55 healthy control participants (35 male, 20 female) from the Human Connectome Project for Early Psychosis underwent T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging and neuropsychological testing were included in the study. Regions of interest (ROIs) included: left and right superior frontal gyrus, left and right middle frontal gyrus, left inferior frontal gyrus, left and right inferior parietal gyrus, right caudate and left thalamus. Using high-dimensional brain mapping procedures, surface shape of the caudate and thalamus was characterized using Large Deformation Diffeomorphic Metric Mapping, and cortical thickness of frontal and parietal regions was estimated using the FreeSurfer toolkit. Cognitive control was assessed using the Fluid Cognition Composite score from the NIH Toolbox Cognition Battery. Multivariate ANOVA models tested group differences, separated by sex, in cortical thickness ROIs, in addition to a whole-brain vertex-wise analysis. Vertex-wise statistical surface t-maps evaluated differences in subcortical surface shape, and Pearson correlations tested relationships between brain regions and Fluid Cognition performance.Results:Results of deep brain region comparisons between schizophrenia males (SCZM) and schizophrenia females (SCZF) groups revealed significant outward deformation at the tail of the right caudate and significant inward deformation along the dorsal aspects of the right caudate. Additionally, significant inward deformation in multiple nuclei of the left thalamus were revealed. Significant negative relationships between Fluid Cognition and the left superior/middle frontal gyrus (r = -0.24, p = 0.05) in the male FEP group were observed. Additionally, significant positive relationships between Fluid Cognition and left inferior frontal gyrus (r = 0.35, p = 0.02) and left inferior parietal gyrus (r = 0.35, p = 0.02) in the female FEP group were found.Conclusions:Overall, findings revealed significant brain differences of the FPN in deep-brain structures only, including abnormal caudal and thalamic shape, in male FEP compared to female FEP, providing evidence of the importance to examine sex differences in deep-brain regions at the first episode. Differential brain relationships with cognitive control also highlight sex-specific presentations that may aid in clinical management and further characterization of the illness in early stages.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), cognitive control, and perceived seizure control in patients with epilepsy: An exploratory study

Epilepsy is often linked to various psychiatric symptoms, with anxiety, depression, and interictal dysphoric disorders being the most prevalent. Few studies have investigated posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in epilepsy, but they suggest a notable prevalence of PTSD. PTSD is known to be associated with cognitive impairments, particularly memory and executive functions.Our proposed exploratory study aims to investigate executive attentional control and emotional inhibition in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE) who exhibit PTSD symptoms compared with a healthy control group. Additionally, some PWE can manage their seizures using emotional and cognitive strategies, we find it relevant to explore the connection between their regulation abilities, cognitive control performance, and PTSD symptoms.We included 54 PWE and 60 healthy participants. They completed anxiety and depression scales as well as two questionnaires assessing PTSD symptoms and a questionnaire that measured the perceived self-control of seizures. We measured executive control using an executive control task (Attention Network Test, ANT) and an emotional Go/No-Go task. We found a positive correlation between PTSD scores (PDS-5) and performance at the ANT task. In contrast, in the emotional inhibition (Go/No-Go) task, behavioral inhibition errors were positively correlated with PTSD scores, specifically with hypervigilance symptoms in PTSD+ patients. There was a positive correlation between response reaction times in an aversive condition and PTSD scores: the more severe the PTSD symptoms, the faster the PWE identified stimuli in the angry face condition of the Go/No-Go task. Regarding perceived seizure control, we found correlations between alertness and PTSD symptoms associated with seizure anticipation during the inter- and peri-ictal periods. Patients with PTSD symptoms reported better seizure control.Our findings suggest that epilepsy patients with PTSD experience cognitive changes such as heightened executive attentional control, weakened emotional inhibition, and improved seizure control perception.

Diadochokinesis Performance and Its Link to Cognitive Control: Alternating Versus Non-Alternating Diadochokinesis.

In a previous publication, we observed that maximum speech performance in a nonclinical sample of young adult speakers producing alternating diadochokinesis (DDK) sequences (e.g., rapidly repeating "pataka") was associated with cognitive control: Those with better cognitive switching abilities (i.e., switching flexibly between tasks or mental sets) showed higher DDK accuracy. To follow up on these results, we investigated whether this previously observed association is specific to the rapid production of alternating sequences or also holds for non-alternating sequences (e.g., "tatata"). For the same sample of 78 young adults as in our previous study, we additionally analyzed their accuracy and rate performance on non-alternating sequences to investigate whether executive control abilities (i.e., indices of speakers' updating, inhibition, and switching abilities) were more strongly associated with production of alternating, as compared with non-alternating, sequences. Of the three executive control abilities, only switching predicted both DDK accuracy and rate. The association between cognitive switching (and updating ability) and DDK accuracy was only observed for alternating sequences. The DDK rate model included a simple effect of cognitive switching, such that those with better switching ability showed slower diadochokinetic rates across the board. Thus, those with better cognitive ability showed more accurate (alternating) diadochokinetic production and slower maximum rates for both alternating and non-alternating sequences. These combined results suggest that those with better executive control have better control over their maximum speech performance and show that the link between cognitive control and maximum speech performance also holds for non-alternating sequences.

Genetic Variants Associated with Longitudinal Cognitive Performance in Older Breast Cancer Patients and Controls.

Background: There have been no published genome-wide studies of the genetics of cancer- and treatment-related cognitive decline (CRCD); the purpose of this study is to identify genetic variants associated with CRCD in older female breast cancer survivors. Methods: Analyses included white non-Hispanic women with non-metastatic breast cancer aged 60+ (N = 325) and age-, racial/ethnic group-, and education-matched controls (N = 340) with pre-systemic treatment and one-year follow-up cognitive assessment. CRCD was evaluated using longitudinal domain scores on cognitive tests of attention, processing speed, and executive function (APE), and learning and memory (LM). Linear regression models of one-year cognition included an interaction term for SNP or gene SNP enrichment*cancer case/control status, controlling for demographic variables and baseline cognition. Results: Cancer patients carrying minor alleles for two SNPs, rs76859653 (chromosome 1) in the hemicentin 1 (HMCN1) gene (p = 1.624 × 10-8), and rs78786199 (chromosome 2, p = 1.925 × 10-8) in an intergenic region had lower one-year APE scores than non-carriers and controls. Gene-level analyses showed the POC5 centriolar protein gene was enriched for SNPs associated with differences in longitudinal LM performance between patients and controls. Conclusions: The SNPs associated with cognition in survivors, but not controls, were members of the cyclic nucleotide phosphodiesterase family, that play important roles in cell signaling, cancer risk, and neurodegeneration. These findings provide preliminary evidence that novel genetic loci may contribute to susceptibility to CRCD.

Dissociation of Cognitive Effort–Based Decision Making and Its Associations With Symptoms, Cognition, and Everyday Life Function Across Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, and Depression

BackgroundAnhedonia and amotivation are symptoms of many different mental health disorders that are frequently associated with functional disability, but it is not clear whether the same processes contribute to motivational impairments across disorders. This study focused on one possible factor, the willingness to exert cognitive effort, referred to as cognitive effort–cost decision making. MethodsWe examined performance on the deck choice task as a measure of cognitive effort–cost decision making, in which people choose to complete an easy task for a small monetary reward or a harder task for larger rewards, in 5 groups: healthy control (n = 80), schizophrenia/schizoaffective disorder (n = 50), bipolar disorder with psychosis (n = 58), current major depression (n = 60), and past major depression (n = 51). We examined cognitive effort–cost decision making in relation to clinician and self-reported motivation symptoms, working memory and cognitive control performance, and life function measured by ecological momentary assessment and passive sensing. ResultsWe found a significant diagnostic group × reward interaction (F8,588 = 4.37, p < .001, ηp2 = 0.056). Compared with the healthy control group, the schizophrenia/schizoaffective and bipolar disorder groups, but not the current or past major depressive disorder groups, showed a reduced willingness to exert effort at the higher reward values. In the schizophrenia/schizoaffective and bipolar disorder groups, but not the major depressive disorder groups, reduced willingness to exert cognitive effort for higher rewards was associated with greater clinician-rated motivation impairments, worse working memory and cognitive control performance, and less engagement in goal-directed activities measured by ecological momentary assessment. ConclusionsThese findings suggest that the mechanisms contributing to motivational impairments differ among individuals with psychosis spectrum disorders versus depression.

Functional neural architecture of cognitive control mediates the relationship between individual differences in bilingual experience and behaviour

Bilinguals have often, but not always, been found to outperform monolinguals on domain-general attentional control. Inconsistent findings have been argued to stem, at least partly, from treating bilingualism as a uniform category and from not considering how neural adaptations to bilingual experiences modulate behavioural outcomes. The present study investigated how patterns of language experience, including language switching behaviour, duration and intensity/diversity of bilingual language use, influence the brain processes underlying cognitive control, and how these in turn translate to cognitive control performance. We examined reaction times and spectral dynamics of the electroencephalograms (EEG) of two-hundred-and-thirty-nine participants (about 70% bilinguals) with diverse language experiences during two cognitive control paradigms testing interference suppression (flanker and Simon task). Using structural equation modelling, we found that different bilingual experience factors were related with neurocognitive measures, which in turn were related with behavioural interference effects, for the flanker but not the Simon task. More specifically, increased frequency of language switching and intensity/diversity of bilingual language usage was negatively related to induced top-down control measures (especially midline-frontal theta), which in turn was beneficial for interference control. In contrast, duration of bilingual engagement correlated negatively with evoked bottom-up control measures (especially P3) and was therefore detrimental to interference control. We demonstrate here for the first time how the different factors of bilingual experience lead to different neural adaptations which impact behavioural outcomes. Significance statementLike other intensive experiences, bilingualism leads to brain adaptations. It results in structural changes in language areas, and, due to demands on language control, in brain areas associated with domain-general cognitive control. Related to this, bilinguals often outperform monolinguals on cognitive control tasks. But what is often ignored is that bilingualism is a multi-dimensional phenomenon, with variations such as diversity of language usage and duration of language use. The present large-scale study of neural functioning in bilingualism revealed for the first time how individual differences in bilingual experience lead to adaptations to brain functioning which in turn affect cognitive control behaviour. It exemplifies how the complexity of individual experiences plays a fundamental role in brain function.

White matter disconnection of left multiple demand network is associated with post-lesion deficits in cognitive control

Cognitive control modulates other cognitive functions to achieve internal goals and is important for adaptive behavior. Cognitive control is enabled by the neural computations distributed over cortical and subcortical areas. However, due to technical challenges in recording neural activity from the white matter, little is known about the anatomy of white matter tracts that coordinate the distributed neural computations that support cognitive control. Here, we leverage a large sample of human patients with focal brain lesions (n = 643) and investigate how lesion location and connectivity profiles account for variance in cognitive control performance. We find that lesions in white matter connecting left frontoparietal regions of the multiple demand network reliably predict deficits in cognitive control performance. These findings advance our understanding of the white matter correlates of cognitive control and provide an approach for incorporating network disconnection to predict deficits following lesions.

Building a transdisciplinary expert consensus on the cognitive drivers of performance under pressure: An international multi-panel Delphi study.

The ability to perform optimally under pressure is critical across many occupations, including the military, first responders, and competitive sport. Despite recognition that such performance depends on a range of cognitive factors, how common these factors are across performance domains remains unclear. The current study sought to integrate existing knowledge in the performance field in the form of a transdisciplinary expert consensus on the cognitive mechanisms that underlie performance under pressure. International experts were recruited from four performance domains [(i) Defense; (ii) Competitive Sport; (iii) Civilian High-stakes; and (iv) Performance Neuroscience]. Experts rated constructs from the Research Domain Criteria (RDoC) framework (and several expert-suggested constructs) across successive rounds, until all constructs reached consensus for inclusion or were eliminated. Finally, included constructs were ranked for their relative importance. Sixty-eight experts completed the first Delphi round, with 94% of experts retained by the end of the Delphi process. The following 10 constructs reached consensus across all four panels (in order of overall ranking): (1) Attention; (2) Cognitive Control-Performance Monitoring; (3) Arousal and Regulatory Systems-Arousal; (4) Cognitive Control-Goal Selection, Updating, Representation, and Maintenance; (5) Cognitive Control-Response Selection and Inhibition/Suppression; (6) Working memory-Flexible Updating; (7) Working memory-Active Maintenance; (8) Perception and Understanding of Self-Self-knowledge; (9) Working memory-Interference Control, and (10) Expert-suggested-Shifting. Our results identify a set of transdisciplinary neuroscience-informed constructs, validated through expert consensus. This expert consensus is critical to standardizing cognitive assessment and informing mechanism-targeted interventions in the broader field of human performance optimization.

IMPACT OF LEISURE ACTIVITIES ON COGNITION IN OLDER BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS AND NONCANCER CONTROLS

Abstract Older adults represent the largest segment of cancer survivors and may be particularly susceptible to poor cognitive outcomes. This project examines the impact of leisure activities on cognitive performance in non-metastatic breast cancer survivors and healthy controls from the Thinking and Living with Cancer (TLC) Study. Additionally, this project investigates if genetic polymorphisms (APOE, COMT, BDNF) limit the benefits of leisure activities on cognitive performance. A battery of neuropsychological tests was used to create composite scores for learning and memory (LM) and attention, processing speed, and executive functioning (APE). Leisure activity participation was associated with better LM and APE composite scores. Age differences in LM and APE were not statistically significant among the most active participants. Regarding genetic polymorphisms, persons with APOE-ε4 exhibited greater cognitive performance benefits compared to non-ε4 carriers. Future research should examine the extent to which leisure activities can buffer longitudinal declines.

Differential Associations of Adversity Profiles with Adolescent Cognitive Control and Psychopathology.

Adverse childhood experiences are common and have long-term consequences for biological and psychosocial adjustment. We used a person-centered approach to characterize distinct profiles of adversity in early adolescence and examined associations with later cognitive control and psychopathology. The sample included 167 adolescents (47% female) and their primary caregivers who participated in a longitudinal study across four time points (approximately one year between assessments). At Time 1 (Mage = 14years), we measured seven indicators of adversity: socioeconomic disadvantage, abuse, neglect, household chaos, parent substance use, parent depression, and negative life events. At Times 2-4, adolescents' behavioral performance and functional activation during a cognitive control task were measured. At Time 5, adolescents and their caregiver reported on adolescent internalizing and externalizing symptomatology. Using latent profile analysis, we identified four distinct adversity subgroups: a low exposure group, a neglect group, a household instability group, and a poly-adversity group. These groups significantly differed on subsequent levels of psychopathology, but not cognitive control. Specifically, the poly-adversity group reported significantly higher levels of both internalizing and externalizing symptomatology relative to the low exposure group, and the household instability group demonstrated elevated risk for externalizing symptomatology. When using a cumulative risk approach, higher levels of adversity exposure were associated with significantly worse cognitive control performance (but not neural activation). These results suggest that psychopathology outcomes may be differentially predicted by distinct patterns of risk, and that cognitive control impairment may be more strongly predicted by cumulative risk.

Activity flow mapping over probabilistic functional connectivity.

Emerging evidence indicates that activity flow over resting-state network topology allows the prediction of task activations. However, previous studies have mainly adopted static, linear functional connectivity (FC) estimates as activity flow routes. It is unclear whether an intrinsic network topology that captures the dynamic nature of FC can be a better representation of activity flow routes. Moreover, the effects of between- versus within-network connections and tight versus loose (using rest baseline) task contrasts on the prediction of task-evoked activity across brain systems remain largely unknown. In this study, we first propose a probabilistic FC estimation derived from a dynamic framework as a new activity flow route. Subsequently, activity flow mapping was tested using between- and within-network connections separately for each region as well as using a set of tight task contrasts. Our results showed that probabilistic FC routes substantially improved individual-level activity flow prediction. Although it provided better group-level prediction, the multiple regression approach was more dependent on the length of data points at the individual-level prediction. Regardless of FC type, we consistently observed that between-network connections showed a relatively higher prediction performance in higher-order cognitive control than in primary sensorimotor systems. Furthermore, cognitive control systems exhibit a remarkable increase in prediction accuracy with tight task contrasts and a decrease in sensorimotor systems. This work demonstrates that probabilistic FC estimates are promising routes for activity flow mapping and also uncovers divergent influences of connectional topology and task contrasts on activity flow prediction across brain systems with different functional hierarchies.

Novel computerized neurocognitive test battery is sensitive to cancer-related cognitive deficits in survivors.

There is increasing interest in developing new methods to improve sensitivity in detecting subtle cognitive deficits associated with cancer and its treatments. The current study aimed to evaluate the ability of a novel computerized battery of cognitive neuroscience-based tests to discriminate between cognitive performance in breast cancer survivors and controls. Breast cancer survivors (N = 174) and age-matched non-cancer controls (N = 183) completed the Enformia Cogsuite Battery of cognitive assessments, comprised of 7 computerized tests of multiple cognitive domains. Primary outcome measures included accuracy, reaction times (RT), and coefficients of variation (CV) for each task, as well as global scores of accuracy, RT, and CV aggregated across tests. Linear regressions adjusting for age, education, and remote vs. in-office administration showed that compared to non-cancer controls, survivors had significantly lower performance on measures of attention, executive function, working memory, verbal ability, visuospatial ability, and motor function. Survivors had significantly greater CV on measures of attention, working memory, and processing speed, and significantly slower RT on measures of verbal fluency. The Cogsuite battery demonstrates sensitivity to cancer-related cognitive dysfunction across multiple domains, and is capable of identifying specific cognitive processes that may be affected in survivors. The sensitivity of these tasks to subtle cognitive deficits has advantages for initial diagnosis of cancer-related cognitive dysfunction, as well as detecting changes in survivors' cognitive function over time. The remote delivery of the battery may help overcome barriers associated with in-office administration and increase access to neurocognitive evaluation.

The neural correlates of social anxiety modulating conflict-driven cognitive control: An ERP study

According to attentional control theory and processing efficiency theory, anxiety impairs top-down cognitive control and processing efficiency under threat-related stimuli conditions. However, what is the resulting pattern under an emotionally neutral condition? Therefore, the study examined whether individuals with social anxiety exhibited the cognitive control deficiency in absence of emotional information and how social anxiety modulated cognitive control performance by recording the N2, N450, and SP components in the Stroop task. Behavioral data showed that participants with high social anxiety (HSA) showed slower response times than low social anxiety (LSA). ERP data showed that in HSA participants, congruent trials elicited more negative N2 than incongruent trials, but this was not for LSA ones. The N450 was more negative under incongruent condition than congruent ones. This effect was noticeable in LSA participants, but not in HSA ones. The conflict SP was more positive under incongruent condition than congruent one in HSA participants but not in LSA ones. The significant group differences of the N450 and SP were found mainly for incongruent condition. The present findings indicate that individuals with HSA exhibited cognitive control deficiency for neutral stimuli and an individual’s social anxiety modulates the neural correlates of conflict-driven cognitive control.

The influence of reward anticipation on conflict control in children and adolescents: Evidences from hierarchical drift-diffusion model and event-related potentials

Reward is deemed a performance reinforcer. The current study investigated how social and monetary reward anticipation affected cognitive control in 39 children, 40 adolescents, and 40 adults. We found that cognitive control performance improved with age in a Simon task, and the reaction time (RT) was modulated by the reward magnitude. The conflict monitoring process (target N2 amplitudes) of adolescents and the attentional control processes (target P3 amplitudes) of adolescents and adults could be adjusted by reward magnitude, suggesting that adolescents were more sensitive to rewards compared to children. Reward magnitudes influenced the neural process of attentional control with larger P3 in congruent trails than that in incongruent trials only in low reward condition. The result of hierarchical drift-diffusion model indicated that children had slower drift rates, higher decision threshold, and longer non-decision time than adolescents and adults. Adolescents had faster drift rates in monetary task than in social task under the high reward condition, and they had faster drift rates under high reward condition than no reward condition only in the monetary task. The correlation analysis further showed that adults’ non-decision time and decision threshold correlated with conflict monitoring process (N2 responses) and attentional control process on conflicts (P3 responses). Adolescents’ drift rates associated with neural process of attentional control. The current study reveals that reward magnitude and reward type can modulate cognitive control process, especially in adolescents.

Experimental Manipulation of Guided Attention to the Shoulder Movement Task in Clinical Dohsa-hou Induces Shifts in the Reactive Mode and Indicates Flexible Cognitive Control Performance.

The empirical basis for self-control in Dohsa-hou as it relates to effects on cognitive processes has been explored in a few studies of the Japanese psychotherapy, but not under standardized conditions with a strong predictive theory of control. This study reports on a series of experiments with the Dual Mechanisms of Control framework to clarify the possible regulatory mechanism of Dohsa-hou by focusing on shoulder movement, a key body movement task used by practitioners across applied settings. Cognitive control was operationalized with the AX version of Continuous Performance Test (AX-CPT) paradigm for proactive control and a modified Stroop task paradigm for reactive control in a 3-arm parallel group trial study design. Healthy Japanese university students were assigned to a Dohsa-hou group that performed a shoulder movement task for few minutes, an active control group that performed a similar task, or a passive control group comprised of a resting condition. A total of 55 participants performed the AX-CPT and 57 participants performed the modified Stroop task before and after the group manipulation. In the AX-CPT, an increase in the error rate of AY (true cue-false probe) trial from pre- to post-test was observed in the passive control group only, and found to be marginally higher in the passive control group relative to Dohsa-hou group at post-test. This indicated that Dohsa-hou moderated the activation of proactive control by repeated AX-CPT performance. The error rate of the Proactive Behavioral Index did not differ from zero at post-test only in the Dohsa-hou group, indicating flexible cognitive control. In the modified Stroop task, there was no difference between congruent and incongruent trials at post-test for the Dohsa-hou group only, indicating the facilitation of reactive control. The evidence for a balancing effect for the Dohsa-hou-based shoulder movement task indicates that clients experience a form of continuous self-monitoring, which might reduce mind-wandering from their focus on movement execution combined with iterative verbal feedback from the therapist. Overall, the results of the present study suggest that the self-regulatory mechanism promoted in clinical Dohsa-hou emphasizes guided shifts in attention to the reactive mode toward a balance of cognitive control.

Error-Related Brain Activity in ADHD: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Electroencephalography Markers of Cognitive Control Performance

Deviant cognitive control performance is implicated in Attention-Deficit-Hyperactivity-Disorder (ADHD). It is also conjectured to be a potential diagnoser and differentiator between the Inattentive and Hyperactive-Impulsive ADHD types. Reliable measures have not been established due to the variation in published results. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature published up to May 2021 with data on electrophysiological correlates, that is, EEG correlates of cognitive control monitoring (error-related negativity, ERN; error positivity, Pe; correct-response negativity, CRN) in ADHD patients and the efficiency of EEG recordings in differentiating between ADHD types. Multiple databases including PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar, bioRxiv, and medRxiv were searched for eligible literature. Meta-Analyses were performed through statistical tools provided by the open-source metafor package and separately using the Hedge's g standardized mean differences. Meta-Analyses were performed on a shortlisted set of 125 studies involving 7248 participants. To avoid extraneous variables, the sex ratio was maintained at 50:50, and the age groups of participants were equally varied between early teenagers (12-15years), late teenagers (15-18years), young adults (21-25), and middle-aged adults (29-37). The ADHD-afflicted group showed reduced ERN (Hedge's g=-0.58 [CIs: -0.76, -0.35]) and reduced Pe (Hedge's g=-0.65 [CIs: -0.79, -0.44). The Hyperactive-Impulsive ADHD types (2574/7248 participants) showed an increased CRN (Hedge's g=0.68 [CIs: 0.71, 0.29]), while the Inattentive ADHD Types (4674/7248 participants) showed a slightly reduced CRN (Hedge's g=-0.25 [CIs: -0.31, -0.28]. The prevalence of counted task errors was higher in the teenagers' group (12-18years) than the adults' group (21-37years). Results suggest that EEG Pattern Markers (especially Pe and CRN) can act as strong differentiators/diagnosers between the Hyperactive-Impulsive and Inattentive ADHD types. In further development, deep learning classifiers can be built for ADHD types using EEG Markers as Features and statistical values as weights.
