Analysis of Ash Content of Red Salak Bean Coffee (Salacca edulis) Based on Duration of Roasting Length

Maluku province, Seram district in the west, found a strawberry. Fruit is a tropical and horticultural commodity with a fairly high availability. Protein, ash, fat, and water are the closest analysis, carbohydrates as well as fiber. Coffee has a distinctive aroma from the coffee plant and contains high levels of caffeine compounds. The presence of this compound under certain conditions will make coffee unsuitable for consumption, so several types of coffee have emerged which are made from grains from certain plants. One of the potential seeds is snake fruit seeds. Coffee seeds are a new beverage product, the researchers used the old coagulation factor, because long coagulation will affect the formation of aroma and the color of the coffee powder produced will determine the characteristic taste of coffee, which is caused by long variations in coagulation times that vary. The results obtained are presented in the form of tables and analyzed descriptively. The resulting ash composition of red coffee seeds (Salacca edulis) based on different grain durations was 3.46% for 30 minutes, 4.24% for 60 minutes, and 4.70% for 90 minutes. Coffee consumption with different additives and types, genetic variation in caffeine metabolism and new-onset acute kidney injury

Abstract This study aimed to evaluate the association of consumption of coffee with different additives, including milk and/or sweetener (sugar and/or artificial sweetener), and consumption of different types of coffee, including instant, ground, and decaffeinated coffee, with new-onset acute kidney injury (AKI), and examine the modifying effects of genetic variation in caffeine metabolism. 194,324 participants without AKI at baseline in the UK Biobank were included. The study outcome was new-onset AKI. During a median follow-up of 11.6 years, 5,864 participants developed new-onset AKI. Compared with coffee non-consumers, a significantly lower risk of new-onset AKI was found in coffee consumers adding neither milk nor sugar to coffee (HR, 0.86; 95%CI, 0.78-0.94) and adding only milk to coffee (HR,0.83; 95%CI, 0.78-0.89), but not in coffee consumers adding only sweetener (HR,1.14; 95%CI, 0.99-1.31) and both milk and sweetener to coffee (HR,0.96; 95%CI, 0.89-1.03). Moreover, there was a U-shaped association of coffee consumption with new-onset AKI, with the lowest risk at 2-3 drinks/d, in unsweetened coffee (no additives or milk only to coffee), but no association was found in sweetened coffee (sweetener only or both milk and sweetener to coffee). Genetic variation in caffeine metabolism didn’t significantly modify the association. A similar U-shaped association was found for instant, ground, and decaffeinated coffee consumption in unsweetened coffee consumers, but not in sweetened coffee consumers. In conclusion, moderate consumption (2-3 drinks/d) of unsweetened coffee with or without milk was associated with a lower risk of new-onset AKI, irrespective of coffee type and genetic variation in caffeine metabolism.

Ochratoxin a levels in Turkish coffee: a probabilistic health risk assessment via Monte Carlo simulation.

Throughout history, Turkish coffee has been the most widely consumed type of coffee in Turkey. Therefore, the goal of this study was to determine the amount of ochratoxin A (OTA) present in Turkish coffee and to analyze any potential health hazards. A total of 41 Turkish coffees were collected and analyzed for OTA activity using a competitive enzyme immunoassay (ELISA). Furthermore, dietary exposure and health risk assessments for the Turkish population were calculated based on analytical results and coffee consumption data from the Turkish Nutrition and Health Survey 2019 (TNHS-2019) in three age categories (15-18, 19-64, and 65 + years). Nine of the samples contained more than 2.5μg/kg OTA, with an average of 5.24μg/kg. The OTA concentration in 3 samples exceeded the permissible maximum limit (5μg/kg) established by Turkish legislation, and the mean concentration was 8.41μg/kg. A margin of exposure (MOE) approach was used for risk characterization, considering both non-neoplastic and neoplastic consequences. There were no concerns about health risks because MOEs were more than 10,000 for all categories. Although the levels of OTA analyzed in Turkish coffee did not pose a risk to individuals in the three age categories, emphasis should be placed on minimizing and controlling OTA concentrations in Turkish coffee. Additionally, it is also necessary to consider other food sources that could contribute to OTA exposure.

Coffee and Risk of Pancreatic Cancer: Insights from Two-Sample and Multivariable Mendelian Randomization Analyses

Background: The association between coffee and pancreatic cancer risk has reported inconsistent results. Therefore, a Mendelian randomization (MR) study was undertaken to investigate the association between coffee and pancreatic cancer from a genetic perspective. Methods: In East Asian and European populations, independent genetic variants strongly associated with coffee were chosen as instrumental variables (IVs) from relevant genome-wide association studies (GWASs). GWAS data for pancreatic cancer were obtained from the JENGER (Japanese Encyclopedia of Genetic Associations by Riken) project and GWAS catalog database. Two-sample (TSMR) and multivariable Mendelian randomization (MVMR) analyses were conducted to investigate the genetically predicted causal relationship between coffee consumption and pancreatic cancer. A fixed-effect meta-analysis was employed to aggregate estimates from the two populations to reveal the overall association. Results: Both in East Asian and European populations, an increase in coffee intake of a cup per day was not associated with pancreatic cancer risk, regardless of coffee type (including caffeine drinks, instant coffee, decaffeinated coffee, ground coffee, etc.). The results aligned with the findings of the meta-analysis (OR = 1.100, 95%CI = 0.862–1.403, p = 0.450). Also, for coffee intake with positive results in the TSMR analysis (OR = 1.739, 95%CI 1.104–2.739, p = 0.017), consistent negative results were observed after adjusting for potential confounders (smoking traits, drinking, type 2 diabetes, body mass index) in the MVMR analyses. Conclusions: This study found no genetically predicted causal relationship between coffee consumption and pancreatic cancer risk.

Analisis Pengaruh Sistem Pelayanan Self Service dan Store Atmosphere Terhadap Kepuasan Pelanggan pada Dali Coffee Shop Karawang

Coffee shops, as retail establishments that specialize in offering various types of coffee and related beverages, play an important role in meeting consumers' growing needs for a unique and quality coffee experience. This study aims to analyze the effect of self-service service system and store atmosphere on customer satisfaction at Dali Coffee Shop in Karawang. This research uses quantitative methods by distributing questionnaires to customers who visit the store. This study uses a sampling technique that uses non-probability sampling techniques with a purposive sampling approach, namely purposive sampling by determining the number of respondents as many as 100 respondents. The results of this study indicate that the self service system and store atmosphere have a positive and significant effect on customer satisfaction. The conclusion in this study is that the variables of self service system and store atmosphere have a good influence simultaneously on customer satisfaction at Dali Coffee Shop.

Eco-efficiency of coffee production and consumption in the UK at the product and sectoral levels

Coffee is one of the most consumed products globally, and yet its eco-efficiency is still unknown. To address this knowledge gap, this paper examines for the first time the life cycle eco-efficiency of different coffee drinks to identify the most sustainable options and opportunities for improvements in the coffee industry. Nine types of coffee are considered: espresso, latte, cappuccino, Americano, drip-filter, coffee pods, spray-dried and freeze-dried instant, and instant coffee mix. Taking a cradle-to-grave approach, the following life stages are included: coffee cultivation, production and consumption, and end-of-life valorisation of spent coffee grounds. The methodology follows the eco-efficiency ISO 14045 standard to measure the environmental efficiency of a system relative to the economic value it generates. The eco-efficiency is estimated at both the product (one serving) and sectoral (annual consumption) levels based on life cycle assessment (LCA), life cycle costing (LCC) and economic value added (VA). The results show that latte has the highest environmental impacts and LCC but it also has the highest VA at both the product and sectoral levels. Spray-dried instant coffee, on the other hand, has the lowest impacts but also the lowest VA, which makes it the least eco-efficient option. Espresso emerges as the most eco-efficient drink because it has moderate environmental impacts and high VA. Latte and coffee pods are the second most eco-efficient drinks, followed by cappuccino, Americano, and instant coffee mix. Valorising spent coffee grounds could reduce the environmental impacts, LCC and increase the VA at the sectoral level. For example, the climate change impact would be reduced by 80.5–132.1 kt CO2 eq./yr and primary energy demand by 0.9–2.3 PJ/yr while also increasing the VA by £50.2–95 M/yr. When compared to some other food sectors, coffee is 6.4 times more eco-efficient than cheddar cheese and 5.4 times than ice cream and biscuits, respectively. The findings of this study can be used to guide businesses, consumers and policy makers in identifying more eco-efficient coffee products and improving the environmental and economic sustainability of the coffee industry.

Evaluation of the Association Between Coffee Consumption, Including Type (Instant, Ground), and Addition of Milk or Sweeteners and New-Onset Hypertension and Potential Modifiers

BackgroundThe association between coffee consumption and incident hypertension remained inconsistent. ObjectiveThis study aimed to examine the association of consumption of coffee, including different types (instant and ground) and with different additives, with new-onset hypertension, and evaluate whether genetic variation in caffeine metabolism and inflammation may modify the association. DesignThis study utilized a prospective cohort design. Participants/settingA total of 98 765 participants free of hypertension enrolled in the UK Biobank between 2006 and 2010 were included. Dietary coffee consumption was collected using 24-hour dietary recall questionnaires. Main outcome measuresThe study outcome was new-onset hypertension, ascertained by self-reported medical conditions, hospital inpatient records, death registers, and primary care records. Statistical analyses performedCox proportional hazards models were used to estimate hazard ratio and 95% CI. Potential modifying effects were assessed by likelihood ratio testing. ResultsDuring a median follow-up of 12.1 years, 7090 (7.2%) new-onset cases of hypertension were documented. Overall, regardless of coffee type (instant or ground) and whether adding milk to coffee, there was a U-shaped association between unsweetened coffee consumption and new-onset hypertension, with a 14% to 18% reduction of hypertension risk at >1 to ≤4 drinks per day, whereas a null association was observed between sweetened coffee consumption and the risk of new-onset hypertension. Relative to coffee nonconsumers, the adjusted hazard ratio (95% CI) of new-onset hypertension for participants who drinking unsweetened coffee 1 or fewer, >1 to 2, >2 to 3, >3 to 4, and >4 drinks/day were 0.92 (95% CI 0.85 to 1.00), 0.82 (95% CI 0.76 to 0.89), 0.86 (95% CI 0.79 to 0.96), 0.86 (95% CI 0.77 to 0.96), and 0.88 (95% CI 0.78 to 0.99), respectively. Moreover, a stronger inverse association between moderate consumption of unsweetened coffee and new-onset hypertension was found in participants with higher C-reactive protein levels (P for interaction =.012), whereas an individual’s genetic variation in caffeine metabolism did not significantly modify the association (P for interaction = .453). ConclusionsRegardless of the type of coffee (instant or ground) or the addition of milk to coffee, moderate consumption of unsweetened coffee (>1 to ≤4 drinks/day), but not sweetened coffee, was associated with a lower risk of new-onset hypertension.

Characterization of Robusta Coffee Powder with Addition of Palm Sugar and Vanilla Powder to Improve The Quality of Robusta Coffee (Coffea canephora Pierre)

Bondowoso Robusta Coffee is a type of Robusta coffee that has a distinctive taste and high quality. The distinctive taste and high quality are obtained from the results of harvest management and post-harvest processing in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). This research will be carried out by testing the characteristics of Robusta ground coffee with a mixture of palm sugar and vanilla flavoring to improve the quality of Robusta ground coffee. This was done by knowing the physicochemical and organoleptic properties of the mixed Robusta ground coffee. The aim of this research is to determine the interaction between roasting level and the composition of palm sugar and vanilla powder on the physiochemical and organoleptic properties of 3 in 1 Robusta Coffee. This research uses an experimental plan arranged factorially with the basic pattern of a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with 4 replications. This design has two factors, the first factor is the roasting level and the second is the mixture composition. The results of this research show (1) The interaction of Roasting Level and Mixture (palm sugar and vanilla powder) has no significant effect on all observed variables such as water content, Brix content, pH value, and powder bulk density. (2) The effect of the main level of roasting has a very significant effect on the observed variables of rainfall density and an insignificant effect on the variables of air content, Brix content and pH value. (3) The effect of the main mixture has a very significant effect on the observed variables of air content, Brix content and powder bulk density and has no significant effect on the variable pH value.

Impact of land use on shallow groundwater quality for domestic use in Mathira East Sub-County in Kenya

Shallow groundwater sources of boreholes and springs form major types of water resources used in rural areas of Kenya. Information on their status is inadequate, thus hindering their sustainable management. This study investigated the relationship between land-use types, groundwater sources and water quality. Thirty-six randomly selected groundwater sources were sampled in Mathira East Sub-County from four stratified land-use types of forest, tea, coffee, and urban, with 18 samples collected for either shallow boreholes or springs. The Principal Component Analyses (PCA) grouped groundwater resources into three groups according to groundwater sources and land-use types. Spearman rank correlation, one-way ANOVA and unpaired t-test found that land use types significantly influenced shallow groundwater quality along an increasing gradient of landscape disturbances from the less disturbed forest, then tea, coffee and lastly to the severely disturbed, the urban area. The most affected water parameters were turbidity, conductivity, NO3–N, phosphates and faecal coliforms and their variation was attributed to land-use changes, especially agricultural intensification and urbanisation. The significant variations in other water quality parameters (total hardness, total alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, manganese and fluoride) were attributed to water–rock interactions, climatic factors and land use changes. Calculated Water Quality Index (WQI) with faecal coliforms parameter from groundwater sources were found unsuitable for domestic use, while the ones derived without faecal coliforms parameter were found safe for human use. Overall, shallow groundwater sources were contaminated and unsafe for human use. This study recommends regular monitoring of key water parameters affected by land use changes to support the sustainable management of shallow groundwater resources in Mathira East Sub-County and the larger region of South Sahara Africa.

Unraveling tea and coffee consumption effects on cardiovascular diseases risk factors: A narrative review.

Daily lifestyle plays a vital role in modifying the risk for cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Our daily life isn't inseparable from nutrition intake. As such, tea and coffee are often regarded as the most consumed beverages worldwide. There have been a lot of debates on the adverse effects and benefits of consuming these popular beverages. This comprehensive review explores the different types of tea and coffee and their mechanism of action. It delves deeper into their roles in reducing CVD risk, aiding CVD recovery, lowering CVD mortality, and their varying effects across populations and regions. An extensive literature search was conducted on PubMed. Relevant articles were identified through cross-referencing and manual searches. Excluded from the study were commentaries, case reports, clinical vignettes, and non-English articles. Tea and coffee contain varying levels of caffeine and other bioactive compounds with cardioprotective effects against oxidative stress, inflammation, and more. Genetic factors further modulate their effects. Tea flavonoids benefit cholesterol, blood pressure, and endothelial function, while coffee constituents impact oxidative stress, metabolism, insulin sensitivity, and gut flora. Moderate consumption of both beverages may offer cardiovascular benefits, but outcomes vary depending on populations and conditions. Tea and coffee consumption may influence CVD recovery by reducing mortality and improving survival, however, it must be noted that it has the potential to be harmful to some individuals. Evidence suggests that moderate consumption of these beverages may be linked to reduced cardiovascular mortality, although individual characteristics and pre-existing conditions can influence outcomes. Excessive caffeine consumption, found in both beverages, may pose risks such as arrhythmias, hypertension, and cardiovascular mortality in CVD patients, with a dose-dependent nature. Future research should delve into mechanisms, genetic factors, and diverse cultural impacts of its use. Health care providers should consider individual characteristics when advising on tea and coffee consumption in the context of cardiovascular health.

Pengaruh Air Kelapa, Ekstrak Bawang Merah dan Ekstrak Rebung Bambu Terhadap Perkecambahan Benih Kopi Robusta (Coffea canephora)

Background: Robusta (Coffea canephora) is one type of coffee widely cultivated in Indonesia and is one of the leading commodities. Coffee seeds include seeds that have a long dormancy period that inhibits the germination process. Breaking dormancy can be done by several methods, one of which is soaking in natural growth regulators. Soaking treatment with natural growth regulators can be combined with soaking time treatment to break dormancy. This study aimed to determine the combination of natural growth regulator treatment and the right soaking time for Robusta coffee seed germination. Methods: This research is a 3-repeat Complete Factorial Randomized Design Experiment with the first factor of natural growth regulators type, which consists of 4 levels, namely: Z0 = control; Z1 = coconut water; Z2 = onion extract and Z3 = bamboo shoots, and the second factor is the length of soaking which consists of 3 levels, namely P1 = 12 hours; P2 = 24 hours and P3 = 36 hours. Results: Natural growth regulators' treatment of shallot extract with 24 hours of soaking time gave the best results on all parameters. Conclusions: Using natural growth regulators from coconut water, shallots, and bamboo shoots with several soaking times affects all parameters observed, both in single and combined administration.

Exploitation of Ethiopian Coffee Land-race Potentials: Market Demand Oriented Specialty Variety Development

Coffee (Coffea arabica L.) is the major cash crop of Ethiopia. The country is ecologically very diverse which allows the coffee plant to grow under wide range of environments between altitudes of 550 to 2600 m. a.s.l. Ethiopia, being the place of origin for Arabica coffee, is endowed with genetic pool wealth of the crop and with enabling environmental conditions to sustainably produce and supply fine specialty coffee that can address emerging international market demand. The prevailing wide range of ecological condition in the country has have allowed the production of coffees of different types that are with uniquely distinctive quality profile, resistance to major diseases, plant growth and yield potential among many other desirable traits. Of the coffees produced in Ethiopia, the most popular internationally branded types (named depending on area of production) are; Sidama, Yirga-cheffe, Limmu, Gimbi and Harerghe coffees. These specific coffee localities, despite their valuable potential and the recognition they deserved on the world market, were lacking their own improved local varieties where they had been using coffee varieties released for other areas (south-western region) until the 2010. However, most of southwest varieties showed multitude of constraints such as poor adaptation and inherent quality adulteration under the locations. Cognizant of this problem, local land race variety development program was designed and implemented to promote sustainable production of the distinct coffee types by origin maintaining inherent qualities of the specific localities for enhanced export market expansion. Through this breeding approach so far, outstanding achievements were recorded in germplasm collection, evaluation for desirable agronomical traits, and generation of basic information on the genetics aspects, and development and release of 12 speciality varieties suiting for the specific coffee landraces in Ethiopia, i.e., 4 Harerghe, 4 Wollega/Gimbi, 3 Sidama/Yirgachefe and 1 Limu coffees. As the main focus areas of future Arabica coffee landrace improvement program, it would be vital to give due attention to further identification of new and distinctive landraces, extensive collection of coffee genetic resource from unaddressed localities, application of molecular breeding techniques such as marker assisted selection and breeding for major /emerging/ diseases and stress tolerance, among others.

Evaluation of differences in cardiovascular and metabolic effects of chronic caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee intake

Although coffee is one of the most popular beverages, the relationship between chronic consumption and cardiovascular health remains controversial. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of chronic consumption of caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee on biochemical profile and cardiovascular response. Three groups of rats were treated with HPLC characterized caffeinated or decaffeinated coffee and control for six weeks; blood pressure and biochemical profile were analyzed, followed by in vitro aortic ring experiments. The results showed that both coffees reduced blood glucose, AST and ALT. However, only caffeinated coffee elevated blood pressure in vivo, whereas aortic rings with endothelium increased the vasocontractile response; this effect was reversed by the addition of indomethacin and L-NAME also reduced the endothelium-mediated vasodilator response. In conclusion, chronic intake of any type of coffee positively improves biochemical profile. However, caffeinated coffee reduces nitric oxide biosynthesis and increases vasoconstrictor prostanoid production, whereas decaffeinated coffee preserves vascular function.

Analisis Rantai Nilai Kopi untuk Meningkatkan Nilai Tambah Petani Kopi di Kecamatan Paguyangan Brebes

The current coffee potential in Brebes Regency has not been accompanied by high income for coffee farmers. This is because farmers' knowledge of how to maintain coffee plants is still very low, farmer organizations are weak and government support is limited. Until now, coffee has not been considered a crop of strategic importance. The purpose of this study was to identify coffee commodity resources, analyze the value chain and determine cost drivers. This study used a mixed research approach of both qualitative and quantitative research. The qualitative research approach was to answer the research questions posed. Quantitative research in this study is to calculate the cost value of each process activity in coffee processing. Based on the value chain analysis, the determinants of downstream coffee processing products are greenbean processing, roasting and grinding. Greenbean processing is able to add value by 47.5% for robusta type and 71.47% for arabica coffee type. While roasting and grinding activities are able to increase the added value by 65.36% for robusta type and 85.12% for arabica type.

Association between coffee consumption and metabolic syndrome in Korean adults.

Studies examining the association between coffee consumption and metabolic syndrome (MetS), considering different coffee types, have reported inconsistent results. We investigated the relationship between coffee consumption and MetS, taking into account coffee types, using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted from 2016 to 2021 among 14,631 adults aged 19-64 years. We used a 24-h dietary recall method to assess diet, including the type and quantity of coffee consumed. Coffee was categorized into black coffee and coffee with sugar and/or cream (non-drinkers, ≤1, 2-3, and >3 cups/day). Multivariable logistic regression models were utilized to investigate the relationship between coffee consumption and MetS, defined by the harmonized criteria. After adjusting for potential covariates, for women, 2-3 cups/day of black coffee were inversely associated with MetS (OR = 0.66; 95% CI = 0.46-0.96). Three or fewer cups per day of black coffee were inversely associated with low high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and elevated triglycerides in women. Coffee consumption was not significantly associated with MetS in men. Consumption of coffee with sugar and/or cream or more than three cups per day of coffee was not significantly associated with MetS overall. Our findings suggest that moderate of 2-3 cups/day of black coffee consumption is inversely associated with MetS in women, possibly due to its favorable impact on HDL-C and triglycerides. Further prospective studies examining the consumption of different coffee types in relation to MetS are warranted to offer definitive evidence.

Impact of Coffee Consumption on Subjective Perception and Inflammatory Markers in Patients with Inflammatory Bowel Diseases.

Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), including Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), are chronic conditions marked by persistent inflammation, impacting patients' quality of life. This study assessed differences in coffee consumption between CD and UC patients and its potential effects on the subjective perception and objective changes in inflammation markers in these two categories of patients. Using questionnaires, coffee consumption patterns, and perceived symptom effects were evaluated. Biological samples were collected to measure the following inflammatory markers: leukocytes, C-reactive protein (CRP), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and fecal calprotectin (FC). Among 148 patients, 60% reported regular coffee consumption, with no significant difference between CD and UC patients. While 45.93% perceived no impact on symptoms, 48% of those reporting exacerbation continued their regular coffee consumption. FC values were significantly lower in coffee consumers than in non-consumers (p < 0.05), particularly in those consuming natural coffee (p < 0.001), and the case was observed for UC patients (p < 0.05). No significant differences were observed in other inflammatory markers, regardless of coffee type, frequency, or milk addition. This study highlights the commonality of coffee consumption among IBD patients and the association of lower FC levels with coffee consumption, especially in UC patients, suggesting that coffee may influence intestinal inflammatory responses.

Associations between different coffee types, neurodegenerative diseases, and related mortality: findings from a large prospective cohort study

BackgroundObservational studies have suggested associations between amount of coffee consumption and decreased risk of neurodegenerative diseases. However, these studies do not consider differences among coffee types, including sweetened, unsweetened, caffeinated, and decaffeinated varieties. ObjectivesThis study aims to identify associations between the consumption of various coffee types (sugar-sweetened, artificially sweetened, unsweetened, caffeinated, and decaffeinated) and risks of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD), along with related mortality. MethodsThis prospective study included 204,847 participants (44.7% males) from the UK Biobank. Cox proportional hazards models were used to assess the associations of coffee type with neurodegenerative outcome. On the basis of coffee consumption, participants were divided into 5 groups: non-coffee consumers, >0–1 cup/d, ≥1–2 cups/d, ≥2–3 cups/d, and ≥3 cups/d. ResultsOver a median follow-up of 9 y, the study documented 1696 cases of ADRD, 1093 cases of PD, and 419 neurodegenerative-related deaths. In the multivariate analysis, compared with non-coffee consumers, those with the highest intake of unsweetened and caffeinated coffee (≥3 cups/d) showed hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 0.75 (0.62, 0.91) for ADRD, 0.71 (0.56, 0.91) for PD, and 0.67 (0.44, 1.01) for neurodegenerative-related death. However, no significant associations were noted in either decaffeinated or sugar/artificially sweetened coffee groups (P > 0.05). ConclusionsHigher intake of caffeinated coffee, particularly the unsweetened variety, was associated with reduced risks of ADRD and PD. No such associations were observed for sugar-sweetened or artificially sweetened coffee.

Novel authentication of African geographical coffee types (bean, roasted, powdered) by handheld NIR spectroscopic method

African coffee is among the best traded coffee types worldwide, and rapid identification of its geographical origin is very important when trading the commodity. The study was important because it used NIR techniques to geographically differentiate between various types of coffee and provide a supply chain traceability method to avoid fraud. In this study, geographic differentiation of African coffee types (bean, roasted, and powder) was achieved using handheld near-infrared spectroscopy and multivariant data processing. Five African countries were used as the origins for the collection of Robusta coffee. The samples were individually scanned at a wavelength of 740–1070 nm, and their spectra profiles were preprocessed with mean centering (MC), multiplicative scatter correction (MSC), and standard normal variate (SNV). Support vector machines (SVM), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), neural networks (NN), random forests (RF), and partial least square discriminate analysis (PLS-DA) were then used to develop a prediction model for African coffee types. The performance of the model was assessed using accuracy and F1-score. Proximate chemical composition was also conducted on the raw and roasted coffee types. The best classification algorithms were developed for the following coffee types: raw bean coffee, SD-PLSDA, and MC + SD-PLSDA. These models had an accuracy of 0.87 and an F1-score of 0.88. SNV + SD-SVM and MSC + SD-NN both had accuracy and F1 scores of 0.97 for roasted coffee beans and 0.96 for roasted coffee powder, respectively. The results revealed that efficient quality assurance may be achieved by using handheld NIR spectroscopy combined with chemometrics to differentiate between different African coffee types according to their geographical origins.

In Indonesia, the use of inorganic fertilizers is one area that is produced continuously to be used to increase crop yields, especially vegetables. Organic fertilizer and compost also have long-term benefits because they can increase the fertility of plants such as coffee. Indonesia is a coffee producer with unique characteristics. There is one type of coffee that is not widely known by the Indonesian people, namely Excelsa coffee. Excelsa coffee has very distinctive characteristics and aroma. Most of Wonomerto's residents have agricultural land and livestock that can produce coffee and livestock. However, villages that have cattle farms are still unable to utilize animal waste properly, and also residents who have coffee production only process it into ground coffee. Therefore, educational events and new programs for the Bokashi compost coffee market are being held. Apart from that, agricultural products and animal products that cannot yet be processed can be used as organic fertilizer using EM4 technology. The benefits of bokashi fertilizer are that it can increase the nutrient content of plants, reduce organic waste, and encourage the growth of plant microorganisms.
