Preference of hypothenemus hampei for coffee fruits according to state of maturation and infestation

The coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) remains the most important coffee pest worldwide. Coffee fruits emit a mixture of volatiles, which function as insect attractants. Y-tube olfactometry tests allowed us to determine insect response to coffee fruits in different developmental stages: green, underripe, mature-ripe and overripe. The ripe fruits showed the highest levels of insect attraction, up to 30% more than the other stages. Additionally, insect attraction to fruits previously infested with H. hampei for 3 and 24 h vs. noninfested fruits was tested. The infested and noninfested ripe fruits showed the same levels of attraction. The overripe and green fruits infested for 3 h showed 12% greater insect attraction. The green fruits infested for 24 h showed 20% more attraction. When evaluating insect attraction to the methanol:ethanol alcohol mixture vs. the fruits, the alcohols showed greater insect attraction than all developmental stages except the ripe fruits. The understanding of H. hampei behavioral characteristics and preferences for coffee fruits in different developmental and infestation stages will allow the design of better insect control strategies.

Positional Effects of Bottle-Baited Traps in Reducing Infestation Level of Coffee Berry Borer Hypothenemus Hampei Ferrari in Kilimanjaro Region, Tanzania

Coffee berry borer (CBB) is among the key insect pests of coffee worldwide. The use of bottle-baited traps has been in practice in several coffee-growing areas including Tanzania. However, there is limited information about the influence of height and spacing of commonly used bottle-baited traps in managing CBB in coffee-growing areas in the country. Therefore, the objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of height where traps were placed (0.6, 1.2, and 1.6 m) on the reduction of infestation level of coffee berry borers at different developmental stages of coffee fruit (green and red fruit) under field conditions. The experiment followed a completely randomized block design with a factorial arrangement and four replications, three (lower, middle, and upper) levels of height and spacing were placed for 7 months. The number of captured CBB and damaged berries percentage was evaluated. The data were analyzed by R Software (2021) through an analysis of variance and means were separated by Turkey’s (0.05). A significant minimum berries damage (0.26%) as an implication of the lowest CBB infestation level was shown at the height of 0.6 m (for all stages of berries). On the other hand, at the red berries stage, the lowest damage (11.12%) was observed at the height of 1.6 m. Generally, this study deduced that the lower the height from which the traps are placed, the lower the infestation level of CBB hence reducing crop damage by the pest.

The effect of an altitudinal gradient on the abundance and phenology of the coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) (ferreri) (Coleoptera: scolytidae) in the Colombia Andes

Globally, the coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei (Ferreri) is the most severe pest of the commercial coffee species arabica coffee (Coffea arabica). Heterogenous landscapes characterize many coffee-growing areas. We studied the phenology of coffee and the abundance, and development of infestation by CBB within the context an altitudinal gradient in the coffee-growing region of Caldas, Colombia. This was between 1200 m and 1800 m (a.s.l.) from September 2019 to July 2020 covering two seasons of coffee flowering. Coffee berry phenology did not differ over the altitudinal gradient studied, but CBB abundance and berry infestation differed in quantity and timings, with lower altitudes having higher abundances and proportions of infestation than higher altitudes. In the context of CBB management, October through to December is vital for coffee farms <1500 m as CBB abundance and infestation both spike, and March to June is key for farms between 1500-1700 m for the same reasons. In conclusion, coffee farmers in highly heterogeneous landscapes will have to adjust their CBB management according to the altitude gradients of their farm.

Efficacy of long-lasting insecticide-incorporated nets on 2 scolytinae pests, the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei and tropical nut borer Hypothenemus obscurus under laboratory conditions.

Several pests affect coffee (Coffea spp., Rubiaceae) and macadamia, Macadamia integrifolia Maiden & Betche (Proteaceae) in Hawaii. The coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), is the most damaging to coffee, while the tropical nut borer, Hypothenemus obscurus (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), is one of the worst pests of macadamia. This paper investigates the potential efficacy of a long-lasting insecticide-incorporated net (LLIN) under laboratory conditions to manage these pests. The LLIN (40 denier with mesh size 625 knots/in²), incorporated with α-cypermethrin (0.34%), was excised into 100 mm circles and inserted in 100 mm Petri dishes. Nets with the same quality but without insecticides were used as control treatments. Twenty beetles (H. obscurus or H. hampei) each were placed on the treated and non-treated netting at 4 treatment or exposure hours-1, 6, 12, and 24-with 5 replicates. Subsequently, the beetles were ranked alive, affected, or dead. The results showed that the LLIN with α-cypermethrin had significant lethal and sub-lethal effects on both Hypothenemus species, causing over 90% mortality after 24 h of exposure and paralysis after 1, 6, and 12 h of exposure. The highest lethality value was recorded after 24 h of exposure for both H. obscurus and H. hampei. The LT50 of H. obscurus and H. hampei was 18.78 min and 2.15 h, respectively, while the LT90 values were 32.11 and 20.67 h. These results imply the potential effectiveness of LLINs with α-cypermethrin for management of H. obscurus and H. hampei, but field studies are warranted for optimization.

Behavioural interactions between co‐habiting females and their impact on productivity and offspring sex ratios in the coffee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei

Abstract The coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) has invaded all coffee‐producing regions of the world and causes substantial economic losses every year. A single female beetle typically infests one coffee berry, which her offspring consume over the course of development. Offspring then engage in sib‐mating before daughters fly off to infest new berries. We assessed infestation rates across different locations in Jamaica and found a strong positive correlation between double infestation and overall infestation rate, suggesting that females prefer to breed alone but will tolerate sharing a berry under resource constraints. Using an artificial habitat to study productivity and behaviour in the laboratory, we found that single females produced significantly more offspring per capita than two females, suggesting that co‐habitation is costly. Accordingly, co‐habiting females spent a significant proportion of their time engaged in antagonistic interactive behaviours such as pushing. When daughter beetles were given the opportunity to stay with their mothers or to infest a new berry, they tended to leave. In contrast to some related beetle species, which exhibit gregariousness and even cooperative behaviour, beneficial social interactions in the CBB appear to be limited to parental care.

Attack Intensity of Coffee Berry Borer Hypothenemus Hampei Ferr at Different Altitudes in Simalungun Regency and Control Efforts Using Attractants

The research was carried out in people's coffee plantations at 4 locations at different altitudes in Simalungun Regency. The aim of the research was to determine the intensity of attacks by the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei Ferr on land at different altitudes, and to determine the effectiveness of synthetic attractant traps to control it. The research method used a series design (randomized design series groups), which was carried out on coffee plantations at altitudes of 550, 850, 1,000 and 1,150 meters above sea level. At each plantation location, in an effort to control Hypothenemus hampei Ferr attacks, 3 (three) types of synthetic attractant traps were installed: Hypotan 500 SL, Koptan and Atrakop 500 L. The results of the research showed that the intensity of Hypothenemus hampei Ferr attacks tended to decrease in coffee plantation locations. higher above sea level and vice versa. The attractant types Hypotan 500 SL, Koptan and Atrakop 500 L showed no significant difference in effectiveness for trapping the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei Ferr. However, these 3 types of attractants have not been able to reduce the intensity of attacks from puso, heavy and moderate categories to light attack categories.

Mathematical Model for the Biological Control of the Coffee Berry Borer Hypothenemus hampei through Ant Predation.

Coffee is a relevant agricultural product in the global economy, with the amount and quality of the bean being seriously affected by the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari), CBB, its principal pest. One of the ways to deal with this beetle is through biological control agents, like ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), some of which are characterized by naturally inhabiting coffee plantations and feeding on CBB in all their life stages. Our paper considers a predator-prey interaction between these two insects through a novel mathematical model based on ordinary differential equations, where the state variables correspond to adult CBBs, immature CBBs, and ants from one species, without specifying whether preying on the CBB is among their feeding habits, in both adult and immature stages. Through this new mathematical model, we could qualitatively predict the different dynamics present in the system as some meaningful parameters were varied, filling the existing gap in the literature and envisioning ways to manage pests. Mathematically, the system's equilibrium points were determined, and its stability was studied through qualitative theory. Bifurcation theory and numerical simulations were applied to illustrate the stability of the results, which were interpreted as conditions of the coexistence of the species, as well as conditions for eradicating the pest, at least theoretically, through biocontrol action in combination with other actions focused on eliminating only adult CBBs.

Methodology to Test Control Agents and Insecticides Against the Coffee Berry Borer Hypothenemus hampei.

Prior to recommending insecticides to treat the coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei, it is valuable to know the mortality and repellency of these insecticides against adult insects or their impact on reproductive output. However, currently available methods assess adult mortality only, limiting the selection of novel insecticides with a different mode of action. In this work, different experimental methods were examined to identify the diverse effects on the CBB under laboratory conditions. For this, green coffee fruits (GFs) were collected and disinfected by immersion in sodium hypochlorite solution followed by UV light irradiation. In parallel, CBB adults from a colony were disinfected by immersion in sodium hypochlorite solution. To assess fruit protection (preinfestation), the fruits were placed in plastic boxes, and the insecticides were applied. Then, the CBB adults were released at a rate of two CBBs per GF. The GFs were left under controlled conditions to evaluate CBB infestation and survival after 1, 7, 15, and 21 days. To evaluate insecticide efficacy after CBB infestation (postinfestation), CBB adults were released to the GFs in a 2:1 ratio for 3 h at 21 °C. Infested fruits showing CBB adults with their abdomens partially exposed were selected and placed in 96-well racks, and the CBBs boring into the fruits were treated directly. After 20 days, the fruits were dissected, and the CBB biological stages inside each fruit were recorded. The GFs served as substrates that mimic natural conditions to evaluate toxic, chemical, and biological insecticides against the CBB.

Identification of Coffee Berry Borer from Similar Bark Beetles in Southeast Asia and Oceania

This guide aims to assist in the accurate identification of a highly damaging pest, the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei. Key morphological characters are noted which may distinguish it from similar species found in coffee berries and coffee berry borer traps. Similar genera are also distinguished, though the guide does not provide identification of these genera to species. Useful to both professionals and non-professionals, the guide provides a glossary of anatomical terms used as well as annotated figures of specimens. It is hoped that increased accuracy in identification of coffee berry borer will assist in efforts to limit the spread of the beetle in coffee growing regions around the world.

The Used of Attractants From Coffee at Various Heights Traps to Control Coffee Berry Borer and Quality Test of Coffee Berry

The coffee plant is a commodity that is widely grown in Toba Regency, Province of North Sumatera. Coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) is an essential pest in coffee plants which can reduce the quantity and quality of coffee fruit up to 50%. This research was to study the use of attractants derived from extract coffee bean and outer skin (pericarp) at various height traps to control CBB in Parsaoran Sibisa Village, Lumban Julu District, Toba Regency. This research method uses a factorial randomized block design with two treatments and three replications. For the first factor is the type of attractants (aqua-des, coffee beans and pericarp). The second factor is the height of the trap (0.5; 1.0 and 1.5 m). The results showed that the interaction of attactant type and trap height had no significant effect, but the attractiveness of coffee beans significantly affected CBB population trapped. The attractant of coffee beans caught 16.40 adults, 6.57 adults pericarp and 0.04 adults of distilled water. The best trap height is at 0.5 m with 8.50 adults followed by a height of 1.0 m and 1.5 m each with 8.28 adults and 6.24 adults.

Agro-Ecological Management of Coffee Pests in Brazil

Coffee plants host several herbivorous species, but only few are considered pests. Brazil is the largest coffee producer of the world, and the two key coffee pests of the crop in the country are the coffee leaf minerLeucoptera coffeellaand the coffee berry borerHypothenemus hampei. However, in some regions or on specific conditions, species of mites and scales can also cause damage to coffee plants. Conventional management of coffee pests relies on chemical pesticides, and it is the most commonly used strategy in Brazil, but environmental problems, pest resistance, and toxicity-related issues have led coffee growers to search for alternatives for pest control. Agro-ecological strategies suitable to coffee cultivation can be adopted by farmers, based on plant diversification, in order to provide resources for natural enemies, such as nectar, pollen, shelter, microclimate conditions, and oviposition sites, thereby promoting conservation biological control. Here I revise these strategies and report the results from research in Brazil. I include results on agroforestry, use of cover crops, and non-crop plant management. These are complemented by curative measures based on the use of organic farming-approved pesticides that can be employed when the agro-ecological practices are not yet consolidated. I also present the cultural control method used by several coffee producers in Brazil to decrease coffee berry borer damage.

Risk Assessment of Ozone Fumigation Under Vacuum to Control Potential Infestation of Coffee Berry Borer and Coffee Leaf Rust in Green Coffee Beans Imported Into Hawaii.

Studies were conducted with ozone gas fumigation under vacuum as a methyl bromide alternative against life stages of coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), and the urediniospores of coffee leaf rust (CLR), Hemileia vastatrix Berkeley & Broome (Basidiomycota: Pucciniales) in green coffee, Coffea spp. L. Fumigation with 10,000 ppm O3 gas under -25.4 mm Hg vacuum1 at 13.0 ± 3.0°C for 6.0 h killed all CBB larvae, pupae, and adults, but did not kill all CBB eggs (~15% survival). Mortality of CLR urediniospores was 100% within the first hour of the 6-h fumigation. Ozone fumigation had no adverse effects on coffee quality. Results indicated that CBB adult hitchhikers may be the only target life stage of quarantine concern, and additional studies focused on this stage. CBB adult survival and reproduction decreased significantly at moisture contents ≤20%, and F1 generation survival did not occur in green coffee at moisture contents ≤15%. As the international standard for green coffee moisture content is 9-12%, adult CBB should not survive or reproduce in exported dry green coffee. Standard industry processing of harvested coffee cherries to the green coffee stage using either mechanical- or sun-drying eliminated CBB infestations from the field. A systems approach is recommended for exporting green coffee to control CBB and CLR that includes eliminating CBB life stages with standard processing methods, reducing moisture content to 9-12% to prevent egg deposition, survival or reproduction, and O3 fumigation to ensure quarantine security against potential CBB adult hitchhikers.

Modelling and optimal strategy to control coffee berry borer

Coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), denoted CBB, is the most important insect pest of coffee worldwide, with a high impact on the economy of coffee producing countries. The insect spends a great part of its life cycle inside the coffee berry and causes severe crop losses. Biological control based on the use of an entomopathogenic fungus is a major alternative to chemical pesticides in order to control CBB. The fungus is sprayed on the coffee berries to kill CBB when the insects drill holes to penetrate inside the berries. Our aim in this work is to optimise the fungus application, using a modelling approach. We first formulate a mathematical model describing the infestation dynamics of coffee berries by CBB. We analyse the model and show that the stability of the pest‐free and coexistence equilibria depends on the basic reproduction number. To introduce a control variable corresponding to the application of an entomopathogenic fungus, we then extend the model and include the fungus dynamics. We formulate an optimal problem which consists in maximising the coffee yield, while minimising the control cost, as well as the CBB population for the next cropping season. The existence of the optimal control and the necessary optimality condition are established using Pontryagin's Maximum Principle. The optimal control problem is solved numerically using the BOCOP software and simulations are provided, showing that the use of entomopathogenic fungus effectively controls CBB.

Predation of Coffee Berry Borer by a Green Lacewing.

We report here for the first time, the predation of coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) by a green lacewing species, Chrysoperla externa (Hagen). We showed in laboratory the predator ability to access CBB galleries, remove pest immature stages, and prey on them. We also observed predation by third instar larvae on CBB adults. With this note, we add a new predator to the reported list of species still little explored of CBB control.

Population dynamics of Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) according to the phenology of Coffea arabica L. in equatorial conditions of North Sumatra

In the Toba Highlands of North Sumatra (Indonesia), coffee production (Coffea arabica L. var. Sigarar Utang) is an important outcome for smallholders; however, the attack of the coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei, is an obstacle for the development of coffee cultivation in this area. This pest causes great economic losses produced by the development of its offspring inside the coffee berries, making it difficult to control. This concerning situation has led us to consider the development of a CBB control strategy, but beforehand, it was necessary to acquire key information on the phenology of the coffee tree and its implication on the bioecology of the pest. Thus, two study designs were set up, one comprising six plots with two different age classes and the other corresponding to a single plot dedicated only to the study of short distance dispersal of CBB. Part of this study focused on the phenology of the coffee trees and showed that berry production mainly takes place in the upper parts of the trees and significantly decreases with tree age. Due to the equatorial climate, berries were practically always present. Berries were produced following two major flowering periods and some minor ones distributed over the year, and harvested at regular intervals. Berry distribution on the branches varied over time. Dynamics of infestations by CBB showed that ripe berries were more infested than unripe berries because they had been exposed longer to CBB attacks, that older trees were more exposed than younger trees and that infestation was evenly distributed along branches. In addition, internode pedestrian dispersal of CBBs was shown to occur, but considerably less frequently than airborne dispersal. In conclusion, it appears that in the agro-climatic context of the Toba region, the virtual year-round presence of berries - which fosters CBB infestations and CBB short-distance dispersal - is a constraint that must be taken into consideration for designing future pest management measures. To this end, it will be necessary in particular to evaluate the potential of trapping mainly used in tropical areas and to put into practice the sanitation harvesting applied in other countries.

Efficacy of Beauveria bassiana strain GHA spray applications against coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei on Hawai‘i Island

Beauveria bassiana (Bb) strain GHA is a major component of an integrated pest management (IPM) program for coffee berry borer (CBB) in Hawai‘i. Efforts to measure effectiveness of GHA spray applications have been complicated by activity of naturally-occurring Bb. Studies were thus designed to provide more accurate efficacy assessments by accounting for this natural activity. BotaniGard® ES + Widespread Max® (WSM) surfactant (2.3 + 0.6 L/ha) were applied in commercial coffee fields. Live CBB were collected at various times post spray and monitored for infection. GHA killed 12–15% of founder females collected 1–3 days post spray and 9–10% collected after 10 days (infections attributed to secondary transmission); each spray thus resulted in 20–25% mortality. Results were comparable at high- and low-elevation sites in summer-wet climate zones. Sprays applied May–August produced similar rates of infection. Peak counts of CBB recently killed by GHA were recorded 4–5 and 12–16 days post spray (reflecting infection by sprayed conidia vs. conidia produced in the field). Cumulative mortality assessed by counts of GHA-killed CBB plateaued at 50–60%, even after numerous sprays, and was attributed to factors unrelated to efficacy. Half rates of BotaniGard/WSM were nearly as effective as full rates. Sprays on intermediate-elevation fields in a summer-dry climate zone were less effective, but efficacy varied with crop-architecture. GHA spray residues infected 30–40% of host-seeking CBB trapped one day post spray, but activity of the spray residues decreased substantially after two days, producing <11% infection. Recommendations for use of Bb for CBB IPM are presented.

Local isolates of Beauveria bassiana for control of the coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei in Puerto Rico: Virulence, efficacy and persistence

The coffee berry borer Hypothenemus hampei (CBB) is a major pest of coffee, and the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana (Bb) is used worldwide for its biological control. Commercial formulations of Bb are sprayed on coffee, but local isolates of Bb may also provide some level of natural control. We compared selected local Bb isolates from CBB-infested coffee fruits in Puerto Rico against the commercial strain, GHA, derived from Mycotrol®. Isolates were tested for their virulence toward CBB in vitro. Two local isolates and the commercial isolate were sprayed on coffee plants in the field, and percent CBB infected, percent fruits with CBB damage, and number of CBB per fruit were surveyed over eight weeks in three consecutive years. Genotypes of Bb isolates in the field were discriminated with microsatellites to determine if isolates persisted after application. Several local isolates and mixtures of isolates were as virulent in vitro as the commercial isolate. In the field, all isolates significantly reduced CBB damage; one local isolate was more successful than the others. Genetic structure of local Bb populations varied from field to field and from year to year. Local isolates persisted; the commercial isolate did not, except in one plot. The commercial isolate may not be adapted to the warm, humid environment of coffee farms. Local isolates and perhaps combinations of isolates can provide more effective control, although current regulations preclude their use.

Biology and fertility of Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) at 16 °C under laboratory conditions

The coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari, 1867) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) is one of the main insect pests of coffee crops worldwide. The present research determined the biological parameters of CBB at 16 °C under laboratory conditions. Development time (egg to adult) was 119.3±1.02 days, with 41% survival, and 20.37 eggs.female-1 for a period of 120 days. The biological aptitude of CBB is negatively affected to 16 °C, when compared with temperatures between 18–28 °C. Key words: Coffee berry borer; life cycle; thermal conditions.

Best time and doses to associate chemical and biological control of the coffee berry borer in highland region, Brazil

The coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei (Ferrari) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) causes significant damage to the yield and quality of coffee beans. Cultural measures are important however, chemical and biological control must be adopted within an integrated CBB management system in order to prevent its damage mainly in larger areas. This study aimed to evaluate different doses and times of spray of the chemical insecticide metaflumizone and its association to the entomopathogenic fungus Beauveria bassiana as a tool to the management of CBB in Arabica coffee. The study was carried out in a high dense crop of Arabica coffee cultivar Catuaí Vermelho at 700 m altitude in the highlands of Espírito Santo state, Brazil. The experimental design used was randomized blocks with eleven treatments, four replications, and plots of ten plants. Seven evaluations were carried out by sampling the berries in the upper, middle, and two sides of the coffee trees. Metaflumizone at a total dose of 3.5 L ha-1 showed high performance for the control of CBB under field conditions in regions of high altitude. The association of metaflumizone with B. bassiana reduced a mean of 88.5% the infestation level of CBB in the post-harvested coffee beans and it can be used as one of the tools for the Integrated Management of CBB under field conditions. Beauveria bassiana can be associated with metaflumizone to control CBB as a complementary spray in March and at a dose of 2.0 kg ha-1 and should be also used in the Integrated Management of CBB. The monitoring of CBB population must be carried out and the first spraying with chemical or biological insecticide must be started at the recommended control level and in the transit season of CBB when flying adults are exposed. &lt;em&gt;The coffee berry borer (CBB) Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), is one of the main pests that cause yield losses in coffee plants. This pest directly attacks the coffee berries, both immature and ripe. The entomopathogenic fungi is one of the potential biological agents for CBB, environmentally friendly and does not kill non-target organisms. The study was conducted at the Integrated Laboratory, Industrial and Beverage Crop Research Institute, from June to October 2018. The aim of this study was to examine the effectiveness of bioinsecticide based on entomopathogenic fungus of Talaromyces pinophilus (EFTP) and vegetable oil on CBB. The completely randomized design with 31 treatments and 3 replications was used in this study. The 31&lt;sup&gt;th&lt;/sup&gt; of treatments consisted of 9 formulas of bioinsecticide based on EFTP and vegetable oil, control-positive (bioinsecticide based on EFTP and water), and control- negative (Klorpirifos insecticide). Variables observed were the activities of EFTP enzyme, effectiveness of vegetable oil as a carrier material, mortality of CBB beetles, percentage of CBB attacks, percentage of hollow berries, and number of holes per 10 coffee berries. Results showed that the formula of bioinsecticide based on EFTP produce the chitinase and protease enzymes which were potential as biological agents to control CBB in vitro. Soybean oil is the most effective as a carrier material in formulating EFTP. The formula of S69MK30 and S79MK20 in concentration of 7.50% respectively have the highest potential as biological agents to control CBB. Other potential formula is S69MKT30 in concentration of 7.50%.&lt;/em&gt;
