Thiocarbamide conversion-based nitrogen-rich covalent organic framework coatings for electro-enhanced solid-phase microextraction of bisphenols

Design and preparation of fiber coatings with excellent electrochemical performance and high polarity is significant for efficient extraction of polar targets in electro-enhanced solid-phase microextraction (EE-SPME). In this work, a combination strategy for structure regulation of covalent organic framework (COF) was proposed to fabricate a nitrogen-rich thiocarbamide linked COF coating (Thiocarbamide-TZ-DHTP) via molecular design and post-synthetic thiocarbamide conversion. The prepared COF coating possesses a large number of O, N, and S functional groups, which not only endow the coating with higher polarity but also significantly enhance its electrochemical performance. The COF coating was used for EE-SPME of polar bisphenols (BPs), demonstrating excellent enrichment efficiency and durability. Subsequently, coupled with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS), a sensitive method was developed for determination of trace BPs. The established method possess wide linear ranges (2.0–800.0 ng L−1), good correlation coefficients (0.9985–0.9994) and low detection limits (0.1–2.0 ng L−1). Moreover, the established method had been successfully applied to detection of trace BPs in tea beverage with satisfactory recoveries (81.6 % to 118.6 %). This research provides a feasible pathway for preparing COF coating with excellent electrochemical performance and high polarity for EE-SPME.

MOF-derived porous carbon microspheres Ni@C-acid as solid-phase microextraction coating for extraction of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from tea infusions

The improvement of the stability and adsorption properties of materials on targets in sample pre-treatment has long been an objective. Extensive efforts have been made to achieve this goal. In this work, metal-organic framework Ni-MOF precursors were first synthesized by solvothermal method using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as an ideal templating agent, stabiliser and nanoparticle dispersant. After carbonization and acid washing, the nanoporous carbon microspheres material (Ni@C-acid) was obtained. Compared with the material without acid treatment (Ni@C), the specific surface area, pore volume, adsorption performance of Ni@C-acid were increased. Thanks to its excellent characteristics (high stability, abundant benzene rings), Ni@C-acid was used as fiber coatings in headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) technology for extraction and preconcentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) prior to gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) analysis. The experimental parameters of extraction temperature, extraction time, agitation speed, desorption temperature, desorption time and sodium chloride (NaCl) concentration were studied. Under optimal experimental conditions, the wide linear range (0.01-30 ng mL−1), the good correlation coefficient (0.9916-0.9984), the low detection limit (0.003-0.011 ng mL−1), and the high enrichment factor (5273-13793) were obtained. The established method was successfully used for the detection of trace PAHs in actual tea infusions samples and satisfied recoveries ranging from 80.94-118.62 % were achieved. The present work provides a simple method for the preparation of highly stable and adsorbable porous carbon microsphere materials with potential applications in the extraction of environmental pollutants.

Covalent organic frameworks: spotlight on applications in the pharmaceutical arena.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have much potential in the field of analytical separation research due to their distinctive characteristics, including easy modification, low densities, large specific surface areas and permanent porosity. This article provides a historical overview of the synthesis and broad perspectives on the applications of COFs. The use of COF-based membranes in gas separation, water treatment (desalination, heavy metals and dye removal), membrane filtration, photoconduction, sensing and fuel cells is also covered. However, these COFs also demonstrate great promise as solid-phase extraction sorbents and solid-phase microextraction coatings. In addition to various separation applications, this work aims to highlight important advancements in the synthesis of COFs for chiral and isomeric compounds.

Controlled construction of 2D hierarchical core-shell ZnO/MnO2 nanosheets on Nitinol fiber with enhanced adsorption performance for selective solid-phase microextraction of trace polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in water samples

BackgroundPolycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are an important class of potentially toxic persistent organic pollutants in environmental water. Their concentrations are usually too low to allow for direct determination with analytical instruments, and the preconcentration is required prior to instrumental analysis. Solid phase microextraction (SPME) is considered as a high-performance green sample preparation technique for volatile and non-volatile organic compounds due to its high enrichment factor. In fact, the nature of SPME coatings governs the adsorption performance. Therefore, more efforts have devoted to the controlled construction of novel long-life SPME fibers with enhanced adsorption performance and improved adsorption selectivity. Results2D hierarchical core-shell ZnO/MnO2 nanosheets (NSs) were constructed on a Nitinol (NiTi) fiber substrate by layer-by-layer assembly for enhanced and selective SPME of PAHs. Firstly, hexagonal ZnO NSs were electrodeposited on the NiTi substrate. Subsequently smaller secondary MnO2 NSs were uniformly grown on the surface of ZnO NSs by a facile hydrothermal oxidation process. ZnO NSs were well protected by the chemically stable MnO2 shell, making the coating highly durable and efficient for SPME application. Meanwhile, the ZnO/MnO2 NSs coating demonstrated superior adsorption performance for PAHs. After the optimization of SPME conditions, the proposed SPME-HPLC-UV method exhibited good analytical performance for preconcentrating and determining trace PAHs with wide linear ranges (0.03–200 μg L−1) and low LODs (0.005–0.112 μg L−1) as well as good repeatability (1.4%-6.9%) and fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (5.3%-7.1%). Moreover, the proposed method showed good precision and recovery in the preconcentration and determination of target PAHs in real water samples. SignificanceAs compared with representative commercially available fibers, the NiTi@ZnO/MnO2 NSs fiber showed enhanced adsorption efficiency and improved adsorption selectivity for PAHs. The constructed fiber can be used as an alternative to commercial fibers for the adsorption and preconcentration of target PAHs in the environmental water samples. Moreover, the preparation strategy is expected to provide new insights into the precisely controlled construction of the efficient and stable core-shell bimetallic oxide nanostructures on the superielastic NiTi-based fibers.

Solid-phase microextraction - a future technique in pharmacology and coating trends.

Traditional sample preparation techniques based on liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) or solid-phase extraction (SPE) often suffer from a major error due to the matrix effects caused by significant co-extraction of matrix components. The implementation of a modern extraction technique such as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) was aimed at reducing analysis time and the use of organic solvents, as well as eliminating pre-analytical and analytical errors. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is an innovative technique for extracting low molecular weight compounds (less than 1500 Da) from highly complex matrices, including biological matrices. It has a wide range of applications in various types of analysis including pharmaceutical, clinical, metabolomics and proteomics. SPME has a number of advantages over other extraction techniques. Among the most important are low environmental impact, the ability to sample and preconcentrate analytes in one step, simple automation, and the ability to extract multiple analytes simultaneously. It is expected to become, in the future, another method for cell cycle research. Numerous available literature sources prove that solid-phase microextraction can be a future technique in many scientific fields, including pharmaceutical sciences. This paper provides a literature review of trends in SPME coatings and pharmacological applications.

Embedding Mixed Sorbents in Binder: Solid-Phase Microextraction Coating with Wide Extraction Coverage and Its Application in Environmental Water Analysis.

Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is a simple and highly effective sample-preparation technique for water analysis. However, the extraction coverage of a given SPME device with a specific coating can be an issue when analyzing multiple environmental contaminants. Therefore, instead of synthesizing one sorbent material with dual or multiple functions, we investigated a new strategy of preparing SPME blades using a homogeneous slurry made by mixing three different sorbent particles─namely, hydrophobic/lipophilic balanced (HLB), HLB-weak cationic exchange (HLB-WCX), and HLB-weak anionic exchange (HLB-WAX)─with a polyacrylonitrile (PAN) binder. The developed coating is matrix compatible, as the binder functions not only as a glue for immobilizing the sorbent particles but also as a porous filter, which only allows small molecules to enter the pores and interact with the particles, thus avoiding contamination from large elements. The results confirmed that the proposed mixed-coating SPME device provides good extraction performance for polar and nonpolar as well as positively and negatively charged compounds. Based on this device, three comprehensive analytical methodologies─high-throughput SPME-LC-MS/MS (for the quantitative analysis of targeted drugs of abuse and artificial sweeteners), in-bottle SPME-LC-high resolution MS (HRMS) (for the untargeted screening of organic contaminants), and on-site drone sampling SPME-LC-HRMS (for on-site sampling and untargeted screening)─were developed for use in environmental water analysis. The resultant data confirm that the proposed strategies enable comprehensive water quality assessment by using a single SPME device.

Quinoline Bridging Hyperconjugated Covalent Organic Framework as Solid-Phase Microextraction Coating for Ultrasensitive Determination of Phthalate Esters in Water Samples.

Phthalate esters (PAEs) are widely distributed in the environment, and this has caused serious health and safety concerns. Development of rapid and ultrasensitive identification and analysis methods for phthalate esters is urgent and highly desirable. In this work, a novel nitrogen-rich covalent organic framework (N-TTI) derived quinoline bridging covalent organic framework (N-QTTI) was fabricated and used as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating for the ultrasensitive determination of phthalate esters in water samples. The physical and chemical properties of N-QTTI were investigated sufficiently. The N-QTTI-coated fiber demonstrates a superior enrichment performance than either the N-TTI-coated fiber or commercial fibers under the optimized SPME conditions. For the first time, we propose a semi-immersion strategy for the extraction of PAEs from water samples based on N-QTTI-coated SPME fibers. Combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), the developed method N-QTTI-SPME-GC-MS exhibits a wide linear range with a satisfactory linearity (R2 ≥ 0.995). The limits of detection (LOD, S/N = 3) and the limits of quantification (LOQs, S/N = 10) were 0.17-1.70 and 0.57-5.60 ng L-1, respectively. The repeatability of the new method was examined using relative standard deviations (RSDs) between intraday and interday data, which were 0.38-7.98% and 1.22-6.60%, respectively. The spiked recoveries at three levels of 10, 100, and 1000 ng L-1 were in the range of 90.0-106.2% with RSDs of less than 7.48%. The enrichment factors ranged from 291 to 17180. When compared to previously published works, the LODs of the newly established method were improved 5-5400 times, and the enrichment factors were increased by at least 8 times. The absorption mechanism was investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and noncovalent interaction force analysis. The technique was successfully employed for detecting PAEs in water samples.

Microstructure quantification of oblique angle sputtered porous a-Si thin films as a basis for structure-property relations of solid phase microextraction coatings

Understanding processing-structure-property (PSP) linkages of solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating materials is crucial for the rational design and advancement of these new materials. As SPME is a diffusion-based extraction technique, analyzing the morphology of its coating materials is important for optimizing its performance. In this study, we assess the morphological evolution of micro/mesoporous amorphous silicon (a-Si) thin films sputtered at an oblique angle onto silicon, which serve as models for support materials in SPME devices. The contrast of scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) images is enhanced via ZnO infiltration by atomic layer deposition (ALD). Various metrics, including physical descriptors and two-point statistics methods, are employed to follow the films' evolution. Analysis of the two-point correlation function reveals a simple ellipse/spherical local pore geometry in contrast to the long-range irregular arrangement of pores identified by a range of traditional and novel metrics. Additionally, analyzing the internal structure of the pores through homology metrics aligns well with the theoretical understanding of morphological evolution in oblique sputtered films. These analyses show that the “average ratio of principal moment of inertia”, “Betti numbers”, and “two-point statistics” based metrics can capture valuable information during film growth.The morphological analysis approach proposed in this study can be applied to analyze any nanoporous medium as a first step towards developing structure-property relationships that tie back to a given preparation method. Ultimately, a more extensive experimental and/or simulation-based study should confirm the correlations between these metrics and actual diffusion properties as the basis for process-structure-properties relations for improved design and optimization of this film.

Preparation of porous boron nitride-doped polypyrrole-2,3,3-trimethylindole solid-phase microextraction coating for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon detection

Most polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are persistent organic pollutants, have strong carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, and mutagenicity, and pose serious threats to the ecological environment and human health. Owing to the complexity of the matrix and low PAH content of environmental samples, separating and enriching PAHs in environmental samples is necessary prior to their detection. Solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technology is commonly used to detect PAHs owing to its advantages of simple operation, online connection with other instruments, low solvent usage, and integrability of sampling separation, enrichment, and desorption. The extraction coating is the core of this technology, and the type and thickness of the coating are important factors affecting the sensitivity and accuracy of the analysis. Common commercial extraction coatings include polydimethylsiloxane and quartz fiber; however, these materials have a number of disadvantages, such as poor thermal stability and high cost. Several methods, including electrochemical, sol-gel, molecular imprinting, and other coating methods, have been developed to prepare SPME coatings. Electrochemical methods have attracted considerable attention because of their simplicity, short duration, and high coating stability. In the development of an electrochemical method, the selection of the conductive polymer is of particular importance. Polypyrroles (Ppy) are easily synthesized and have numerous advantages, such as good conductivity and stable chemical properties. Thus, their use as a substrate material for SPME coatings is beneficial for improving the overall stability of the coating. Copolymerization with other polymers can enhance the adsorption performance of such coatings via synergistic effects. When doped with inorganic materials with high thermal stability, the composite coating can exhibit high temperature resistance. In this study, a porous boron nitride-doped Ppy-2,3,3-trimethylindole (Ppy/P2,3,3-TMe@In/BN) composite was prepared as a new SPME copolymer coating to detect three PAHs: naphthalene (NAP), acenaphthene (ANY), and fluorene (FLU). Scanning electron microscopy, thermal stability analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and other techniques were used to characterize the Ppy/P2,3,3-TMe@In/BN composite coating. The results showed that the coating featured a large number of porous and wrinkled dendritic structures, which increased the specific surface area of the composite coating and enabled the extensive enrichment of the three PAHs. When the sample inlet temperature of the chromatograph is 320 ℃, the chromatographic baseline of the coating is basically stable. Compared with commercial coatings, the prepared coating had better thermal stability. The coating formed stable intermolecular forces with the three PAHs owing to its numerous carbon-carbon double bonds (C=C), hydrogen bonds, and other structures, thereby achieving excellent enrichment of the target analytes. Compared with Ppy, Ppy/PIn, Ppy/P2,3,3-TMe@In, Ppy/BN, and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coatings, the prepared Ppy/P2,3,3-TMe@In/BN composite coating exhibited better extraction effects for the three PAHs. The Ppy/P2,3,3-TMe@In/BN composite coating was polymerized on the surface of a stainless-steel wire by cyclic voltammetry and combined with gas chromatography-hydrogen flame ionization detection (GC-FID) to optimize the conditions influencing the extraction and separation of the three PAHs, thereby establishing a highly sensitive analytical method for detecting NAP, ANY, and FLU. This method had low limits of detection (LODs) of 10.6-14.5 ng/L (S/N=3) and high stability. The SPME-GC-FID method was used to detect the three PAHs in two environmental water samples, and a small amount of ANY (1.39 μg/L) was detected in one water sample. Satisfactory recoveries (82.5%-113.9%) were obtained when both water samples were spiked with the three PAHs at three levels. The experimental results indicate that the established analytical method can detect the three PAHs in environmental water samples.

Preparation of black phosphorus nanosheets/ zeolitic imidazolate framework nanocomposite for high-performance solid-phase microextraction of organophosphorus pesticides

Design and preparation of new fiber coatings for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is of significance to the sample preparation techniques. Herein, a facile strategy has been developed for the integration of the black phosphorus (BP) nanosheets with metal-organic framework (ZIF-8) to generate a BP/ZIF-8 nanocomposite. For the first time, the newly-synthesized BP/ZIF-8 nanocomposite was adopted as the SPME fiber coating for the extraction of organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs). Under the optimized conditions, the BP/ZIF-8 based SPME method gained acceptable linearity (0.04-20 µg L−1), low limits of detection (0.012-0.051 µg L−1) and good repeatability (3.2-8.1%). Coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometric detection, the developed SPME method was successfully used for the preconcentration of OPPs from environmental waters with the method recoveries from 92.0%-103.8%. This method offers a good alternative for the analysis of trace OPPs in environmental water samples.

Electropolymerized polypyrrole-MOF composite as a coating material for SPME fiber for extraction VOCs liberated by bacteria

The synthesis of efficient and low-cost coatings for solid-phase microextraction attracted much attention. Conductive polymers are excellent candidates for this purpose due to the possibility of electropolymerization, which results in the reproducible synthesis of films. A plethora of studies reported in the literature concluded that modification of conductive polymers with innovative materials could lead to an increase in sensitivity toward specific analytes. In this work, the metal–organic framework-polypyrrole composite was electrodeposited in one step directly onto a stainless-steel substrate. The effect of synthesis parameters on extraction efficiency was investigated. The obtained PPy@ZIF-8 coating was subjected to physical–chemical characterization using electron microscopy and Fourier-transform IR spectroscopy. The main finding of the study was that the values of the limit of detection and intra- and inter-day reproducibility for analytes with different chemical structures were found to be lower as compared to pure polypyrrole coating. Furthermore, the obtained polypyrrole-MOF coating was applied for the collection of profiles of volatile organic compounds liberated by bacteria. Hence, the polypyrrole@ZIF-8 coating synthesized using a low-cost and facile approach presented in this study can be useful for the profiling of VOCs liberated by bacteria.

Applications of functional materials-based solid phase microextraction technique in forensic science

Sample extraction is a crucial step in forensic analysis, especially when dealing with trace and ultra-trace levels of target analytes present in various complex matrices (e. g., soil, biological samples, and fire debris). Conventional sample preparation techniques include Soxhlet extraction and liquid-liquid extraction. However, these techniques are tedious, time-consuming, labor-intensive and require large amounts of solvents, which poses a threat to the environment and health of researchers. Moreover, sample loss and secondary pollution can easily occur during the preparation procedure. Conversely, the solid phase microextraction (SPME) technique either requires a small amount of solvent or no solvent at all. Its small and portable size, simple and fast operation, easy-to-realize automation, and other characteristics thus make it a widely used sample pretreatment technique. More attention was given to the preparation of SPME coatings by using various functional materials, as commercialized SPME devices used in early studies were expensive, fragile, and lacked selectivity. Examples of those functional materials include metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, carbon-based materials, molecularly imprinted polymers, ionic liquids, and conducting polymers, all widely used in environmental monitoring, food analysis, and drug detection. However, these SPME coating materials have relatively few applications in forensics. Given the high potential of SPME technology for the in situ and efficient extraction of samples from crime scenes, this study briefly introduces functional coating materials and summarizes the applications of SPME coating materials for the analysis of explosives, ignitable liquids, illicit drugs, poisons, paints, and human odors. Compared to commercial coatings, functional material-based SPME coatings exhibit higher selectivity, sensitivity, and stability. These advantages are mainly achieved through the following approaches: First, the selectivity can be improved by increasing the π-π, hydrogen bonds, and hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions between the materials and analytes. Second, the sensitivity can be improved by using porous materials or by increasing their porosity. Third, thermal, chemical, and mechanical stability can be improved by using robust materials or fixing the chemical bonding between the coating and substrate. In addition, composite materials with multiple advantages are gradually replacing the single materials. In terms of the substrate, the silica support was gradually replaced by the metal support. This study also outlines the existing shortcomings in forensic science analysis of functional material-based SPME techniques. First, the application of functional material-based SPME techniques in forensic science remains limited. On one hand, the analytes are narrow in scope. As far as explosive analysis is concerned, functional material-based SPME coatings are mainly applied to nitrobenzene explosives, while other categories, such as nitroamine and peroxides, are rarely or never involved. Research and development of coatings is insufficient and the application of COFs in forensic science has not yet been reported. Second, functional material-based SPME coatings have not been commercialized as they don't yet have inter-laboratory validation tests or established official standard analytical methods. Therefore, some suggestions are proposed for the future development of forensic science analyses of functional material-based SPME coatings. First, research and development of functional material-based SPME coatings, especially fiber coatings with broad-spectrum applicability and high sensitivity, or outstanding selectivity for some compounds, is still an important direction for SPME future research. Second, a theoretical calculation of the binding energy between the analyte and coating was introduced to guide the design of functional coatings and improve the screening efficiency of new coatings. Third, we expand its application in forensic science by expanding the number of analytes. Fourth, we focused on the promotion of functional material-based SPME coatings in conventional laboratories and established performance evaluation protocols for the commercialization of functional material-based SPME coatings. This study is expected to serve as a reference for peers engaged in related research.

Architectural engineering inspired in situ growth of covalent organic frameworks as outstanding fiber coating for solid-phase microextraction of phenols

The development of a straightforward method for preparing high-performing solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coatings is of paramount importance. In this work, inspired by architectural engineering, a simple and rapid synthetic strategy was developed to grow covalent organic frameworks (COFs) in situ on the surface of stainless steel wire as the SPME coating. Subsequently, the COF-coated fiber was applied for the extraction of phenols. Due to the avoidance of using any binder, the porous structure of COFs was well preserved, leading to a superior extraction performance, surpassing physically adhered COF coatings and commercial polyacrylate coatings. Combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, an efficient and sensitive analytical method for the quantification of phenols was established with high enhancement factors (11080–58762), wide linear ranges (2–10000 ng·L−1), low limits of detection (0.39–0.72 ng·L−1), and good repeatability (RSD, ≤7.9%). Moreover, the feasibility of the established method was demonstrated by the determination of target phenols in certified reference materials (water and soil) with satisfactory results. The proposed in situ preparation method provides a easy and efficient approach to prepare high-performance COF-coated fiber for the efficient SPME of trace phenols from complex matrices in practical samples.

Cellulose nanocrystal regulated ultra-loose, lightweight, and hierarchical porous reduced graphene oxide hybrid aerogel for capturing and determining organic pollutants from water

The ultra-loose and lightweight reduced graphene oxide/cellulose nanocrystal (rGO/CNC) hybrid aerogel was developed by hydrothermal method. Owing to the dispersibility and plentiful chemical groups of CNC, a variety of rGO/CNC hybrid aerogels with tunable dimensions were formed, thereby overcoming the limitation of size control of rGO aerogels by hydrothermal treatment. Moreover, rGO/CNC hybrid aerogel was endowed with ample functional groups, ultra-loose structure, and abundant micro/meso-pores, which allowed the composite exhibit excellent performance for capturing organic pollutants. With the use as solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating to extract and determine polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the rGO/CNC composites presented superior extraction capacities for PAHs than pristine rGO and commercial SPME coatings due to the synergistic effects of π-π stacking, chemical groups bonding, and fast internal transfer in thick rGO/CNC layers. The proposed analytical method presented good linearity (R2 ≤ 0.9988) in concentration of 0.1–2000 ng L−1, low limits of detections (0.012–0.076 ng L−1), and excellent reproducibility. Finally, the proposed method was applied to determine PAHs from real water, and obtained satisfactory recoveries. This study proposed a novel method for regulating rGO aerogel structures, and confirmed its effectiveness for efficiently capturing organic pollutants from water.

Polyacrylic Acid Functionalized Biomass-Derived Carbon Skeleton with Highly Porous Hierarchical Structures for Efficient Solid-Phase Microextraction of Volatile Halogenated Hydrocarbons.

In this study, polyacrylic acid functionalized N-doped porous carbon derived from shaddock peels (PAA/N-SPCs) was fabricated and used as a solid-phase microextraction (SPME) coating for capturing and determining volatile halogenated hydrocarbons (VHCs) from water. Characterizations results demonstrated that the PAA/N-SPCs presented a highly meso/macro-porous hierarchical structure consisting of a carbon skeleton. The introduction of PAA promoted the formation of polar chemical groups on the carbon skeleton. Consequently, large specific surface area, highly hierarchical structures, and abundant chemical groups endowed the PAA/N-SPCs, which exhibited superior SPME capacities for VHCs in comparison to pristine N-SPCs and commercial SPME coatings. Under the optimum extraction conditions, the proposed analytical method presented wide linearity in the concentration range of 0.5-50 ng mL-1, excellent reproducibility with relative standard deviations of 5.8%-7.2%, and low limits of detection varying from 0.0005 to 0.0086 ng mL-1. Finally, the proposed method was applied to analyze VHCs from real water samples and observed satisfactory recoveries ranging from 75% to 116%. This study proposed a novel functionalized porous carbon skeleton as SPME coating for analyzing pollutants from environmental samples.

In-situ synthesis of carbon dots embedded wrinkled-mesoporous silica microspheres for efficiently capturing and monitoring organochlorine pesticides from water and fruit juice

An in-situ synthesis strategy was proposed for fabrication of carbon dots embedded wrinkled mesoporous silica (CDs/WMS) microspheres. Characterizations results demonstrated that the doping of CDs with a moderate content still allowed the microspheres to maintain wrinkled and highly mesoporous structures. The CDs/WMS composite was subsequently employed as solid phase microextraction (SPME) coating for sensitive determination of ultra-trace organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) from aqueous solutions. High surface area, abundant chemical groups, and plentiful porosity made CDs/WMS microspheres present superior extraction capacities for OCPs compared with commercial SPME coatings and pure WMS. Under the optimum extraction conditions, the proposed analytical method exhibited wide linearity range (0.2–1000 ng/L), low detection of limits (0.0023–0.073 ng/L for water, 0.0062–0.41 ng/L for fruit juice), and satisfactory reproducibility with relative standard deviations of 6.2 %−13.3 % and 7.3 %−13.2 % for water and fruit juice, respectively. Finally, the proposed method was successfully used for determination of OCPs in real water and fruit juice samples. The recoveries varied from 80.1 % to 105.2 % for water and 71 % to 106.8 % for fruit juice. This study developed a novel strategy for synthesis of CDs/WMS microspheres, and proposed a new type of SPME coating, which expanded the potential of CDs in capturing organic pollutants from aqueous solutions.

Covalent organic framework@Ti3C2Tx composite as solid phase microextraction coating for the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in honey samples

In this study, covalent organic framework@MXene (COF@Ti3C2Tx) composites were synthesized and employed as solid phase microextraction coatings for isolation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) from honey samples. The developed composites possessed unique structural characteristics and multiple interactions (π-π and hydrophobic interaction, etc.), which provided them with excellent extraction capacity towards the targeted PAHs. Under optimized conditions, the resultant COF@Ti3C2Tx-coating fiber-based HS-SPME/GC-FID method exhibited a wide linear range (2.0–2000 ng g−1), good linearities (r > 0.9964), and low limits of detection (0.20–0.60 ng g−1). The recoveries of PAHs in the honey samples were in the range of 73.2–112%, with RSDs less than 9.4%. In addition, the findings showed that the composite-based fiber offers a long lifetime, high enhancement factors (483–598), and excellent fiber-to-fiber reproducibility (RSDs <10.5%, n = 3). This work not only details the development of a multi-functional composite, but it also presents an effective strategy for the determination of trace PAHs in complex food matrix.

Evaluating polyvinylidene fluoride - carbon black composites as solid phase microextraction coatings for the detection of urinary volatile organic compounds by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are biomarkers of disease, which can be utilized for accurate diagnostics. The gold standard for VOC identification is gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) as it allows for structure elucidation and quantification. Headspace solid phase microextraction (HS-SPME) is often used in biomarker discovery due to its ability to preconcentrate VOCs prior to GC-MS analysis. However, HS-SPME GC-MS is time-consuming, expensive and requires trained personnel. Gas sensor arrays can detect VOC biomarkers at a point-of-care and therefore are more suitable for disease diagnostics in the clinic. Nevertheless, qualification and optimization of sensing layers is tedious as each VOC of interest needs to be tested individually. Therefore, using SPME fibers to extract VOCs and GC-MS to quantitate the analytes may be an efficient strategy with high throughput to tune sensing layers and increase analyte affinity. To investigate this, suspensions of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and polyvinylidene fluoride-carbon black (PVDF-CB) fabricated at varying concentration were immobilized on SPME fibers through physical deposition, used to extract urinary VOCs and were subject to GC-MS analysis. The addition of CB shows increased fiber performance in terms of total integrated signal and sensitivity toward individual VOCs. PVDF-CB fibers were compared to a commercial polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) SPME fiber run using the same method. The PVDF-CB fiber outperformed the commercial fiber in detecting numerous urinary VOCs of interest. Results of this study show not only that custom SPME fiber performance can be evaluated through GC-MS analysis, but the capability of custom fibers to adsorb urinary VOCs can be tuned based on properties of interest. Hence, this method may be utilized as an analytical tool to characterize and tune gas sensing layers with high analytical throughput.

Facile one-step synthesis of graphene oxide/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane composite-coated fiber for high-efficiency solid-phase microextraction of polycyclic musks

Efficient fabrication of excellent fiber coatings for high-performance solid-phase microextraction (SPME) is interesting. Here, a high-efficiency synthesis strategy on graphene oxide/polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (GO/POSS) composite-coated fiber was exploited via an ultra-fast UV polymerization in one step, and applied to excellent SPME of polycyclic musks (PCMs). Using methacryloxy siloxane-grafted GO and POSS-methacryl substituted (POSS-MA) as functional monomers, a facile and direct UV polymerization of multiple reactions including alkenyl radical reaction and thiol-ene click chemistry was fulfilled on thiol-pretreated fiber in only 5 min without tedious process. Characteristics such as morphology, FT-IR, XPS, BET and TG of fiber coating were studied in detail, as well as the SPME performance. Attributing to the rigid stereo conformation of POSS and large conjugate plane of GO-based nanosheet, the significant surface area, high hydrophobicity and intrinsic π-π interactions were adopted in fiber coating. In comparison of commercial SPME fibers, POSS-based or GO-based SPME fibers, a superior extraction performance towards PCMs was achieved with GO/POSS-coated fiber. High-efficiency extraction of PCMs was gained with prominent enrichment factors and the sensitive detection limits of PCMs were of 0.04–0.12 ng/L. In particular, the extraction efficiency was robust and still maintained a high level above 93% for PCMs even after 150 cycle's applications. Good recoveries of PCMs reached 86.6%–102.1% and 86.7%–101.3% in river water and cosmetic samples, respectively. It lights an attractive approach to efficiently fabricating robust GO/POSS-coated fiber for high-performance SPME of PCMs.
