From Trash to Books, from La Boca to the World: Women cartoneras in the Twenty-First Century

The article focuses on the challenge to the cultural industry and the book market posed by the Argentine cooperative publishing house Eloísa Cartonera, active in Buenos Aires since 2003. The name itself represents a provocation, because it brings together a ‘poetic’ feminine noun with a prosaic adjective. This is how the word cartonera acquires a new meaning, indicating not only a publishing style but also a cultural and political attitude, which transforms the cartonera woman into the inspiring muse of a literary, cooperative and solidarity project.

Socio-economic contribution of cooperative publishing house "hart" to the development of the publishing industry of Ukraine

The subject of research is: formation; development; structure of governing bodies; operational and economic organization of the material base and consumer interests of buyers of book products of the cooperative publishing house "Hart". The purpose of the scientific article is to reveal and show the socio-economic contribution of the cooperative publishing house "Hart" to the development of the publishing industry of Ukraine based on the sources. Research methods. All components of the research are based on the main principles - scientificity, historicism, objectivity, systematicity, development, priority of concrete truth, pluralism, as well as methods of learning socio-economic processes of social development – analysis, synthesis, problem-chronological, comparative-analytical, archeographic, retrospective, statistical, systematic and complex approach. Work methodology. In the process of researching the specified issues, the main provisions were taken as a basis: the history of Ukraine, economic history and the history of economic thought, the history of the publishing industry, the work of domestic and foreign scientists and practitioners in the specified field. Work results. In the context of the mentioned problems, we investigated the socio-economic contribution of the cooperative publishing house "Hart" to the development of the publishing industry of Ukraine. Field of application of results. The results of this study can be applied in the field of studying the problems of economic history and the history of economic thought, the history of the publishing industry. Conclusions. In the context of our research, we found out that the socio-economic contribution of cooperative publishing houses, in particular "Hart", to the development of the publishing industry of Ukraine, is quite large, since these publishing houses, with their entrepreneurial activity, stimulated the publishing process, thanks to them, the works of famous figures saw the light of day of Ukrainian culture, well-known historians, publicists, whose heritage remains understudied. It should be noted that in Ukraine at the current stage of development of the market economy system, where various forms of ownership dominate, the national publishing industry is in an extremely difficult situation. The search for an effective model for the development of national book publishing is still ongoing, so why not turn to our own historical experience.

Middle Volga Cooperative Publishing House in 1918—1919 (Based on the Documents of the Central State Archive of Samara Region)

The history of book publishing in Russia during the Civil War is studied extremely insufficiently, especially in the territories that left the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in the summer of 1918. Among the “white spots” there are activities of the Middle Volga Cooperative Publishing House, opened in Samara in July 1918 after the capture of the city by the parts of the Czechoslovak Corps. The article, for the first time on the basis of the analysis of documents of the Central State Archive of the Samara Region (CGASO) and published sources, attempts the reconstruction of the history of this institution, shows the main stages of its formation and development in the context of confrontation of two models of statehood: Bolsheviks and SR-Mensheviks. The author provides materials showing that the Middle Volga Cooperative Publishing House was created from the very beginning as an interregional one, since it was supposed to serve schools in four provinces (Samara, Simbirsk, Ufa and Orenburg) and the Ural Region, controlled by the government of the Committee of Members of the Constituent Assembly. In the face of shortage of textbooks, that publishing house, being isolated from Moscow and Petrograd, became a temporary centre for supplying educational institutions in the Volga region and the Cis-Urals with textbooks and writing accessories. Analysing the documents preserved in the CGASO, the author shows the self-sacrificing activity of board member Nikolay Andreevich Kalugin, who, after the return of Soviet power to Samara, was able to defend the publishing and bookselling base of the city’s cooperative associations from the encroachments of the Provincial Department of public education. The article reveals the repertoire of books published by the Middle Volga Cooperative Publishing House in 1918—1919 and estimates the degree of rarity of individual publications, not all of which are revealed in the collections of modern Russian libraries.

Cooperation between I. Lyzanivskyi and M. Vozniak in preparing thirty-volume edition of Ivan Franko’s works

The paper clarifies the nature of collaboration between I. Lyzanivskyi and M. Vozniak during the preparation of the first multi-volume edition of Ivan Franko’s works (1924—1931). The study is based on the analysis of letters from the editor of the cooperative publishing house “Rukh”, now kept in Vasyl Stefanyk National Scientific Library of Ukraine in Lviv. The preserved correspondence dates back to 1926—1929. The characteristics of the preliminary work for setting up the corpus of the writer’s critical works have been outlined. According to I. Lyzanivskyi’s plan, the first volume had to be ready for publication in the spring of 1927. The editor prepared a list of I. Franko’s critical works recommended for purchase and copying. As the use of the writer’s archive was impossible, the works were reprinted from the first and the last lifetime editions. Therefore, the stage of searching for the material was extremely important. F. Dudko assisted in copying the works. The preserved handwritten and typewritten copies from Ivan Franko archive in Shevchenko Institute of Literature show that the list of works was gradually extended. Some materials contain the notes and indications of the copyist and editorial corrections. However, due to unfavorable circumstances, the critical works were not included in the thirty-volume edition. Besides, according to the letters, the editor intended to publish the novel “Without Asking Where the Wade Is” (“Ne Spytavshy Brodu”), reconstructed by M. Vozniak, but it also remained unpublished. Instead, the novel “Lel and Polel” (“Lel i Polel”) was introduced to the readers for the first time. It was reconstructed and translated by M. Vozniak and set in the 30th volume of the edition. The collaboration of I. Lyzanivskyi and M. Vozniak to some extent prompted the scholar to study the history of Ivan Franko’s drama “Rowan” (“Horobyna”) and establish its main text. The research work was published in 1940 in the “Notes of Historical and Philological Faculties”.

У 1928 р. Харківським кооперативним видавництвом «Рух» вперше розпочато випуск томів повного зібрання творів Бориса Дмитровича Грінченка. Мета статті — на основі аналізу архівних джерел охарактеризувати етапи редакційної підготовки творів письменника і громадського діяча.Автором статті використовувалися загальні методи наукового пізнання: аналіз і синтез, індукція, дедукція, систематизація, узагальнення. Історичний підхід дає змогу дослідити виникнення, формування та розвиток процесів і подій у хронологічній послідовності з метою виявлення внутрішніх та зовнішніх зв’язків, закономірностей та суперечностей.З’ясовано основні аспекти діяльності Харківського кооперативного видавництва «Рух» у редакторській підготовці творів Бориса Грінченка. Охарактеризовано документи Центрального державного архіву-музею літератури і мистецтва України щодо редакційно-видавничого процесу. Фактологічний матеріал, основні положення можуть бути використані у підготовці праць з історії видавничої справи, для написання спеціальних курсів вітчизняної історії та грінченкознавства.Новизна зумовлена потребою детального аналізу видавничої діяльності початку ХХ ст. Досі немає окремих праць, присвячених редакторській підготовці видань Харківським кооперативним видавництвом «Рух». Видання повного зібрання творів Б. Грінченка стало потужним чинником формування історичної свідомості, сприяло культурній та політичній інтеграції українського народу, зародженню самостійницької думки.Практична значущість дослідження полягає у тому, що історіографічна база дослідження суттєво розширює погляд на видавничу справу на етапі становлення радянської влади.

Publishing of Volodymyr Vynnychenko works by Kharkiv cooperative publishing house «Rukh»

The article considers the editorial aspects of preparation for the publication of works by the classic of Ukrainian literature, public and political figure V. Vynnychenko. It is emphasized that in the 20-30s of the twentieth century. It was at the Rukh Kharkiv Cooperative Publishing House that the first attempt was made to publish a complete collection of the writer’s works. A historical parallel was drawn between the two fates of the editor I. Lyzanivsky and the writer V. Vynnychenko, which helped to find a common ground and to draw conclusions. Particular attention is paid to V. Vynnychenko’s correspondence with the Publishing Board. Various aspects of preparing a complete collection of works are illustrated with examples, supported by considerations and explanations. The historical section of the facts made it possible to determine the violation of the use of V. Vynnychenko’s works without the consent of the author, which shows the inconsistency of the actual state of the economy of that time and the law declared in the laws.

The subject of research is the organizational structure and economic activities of the cooperative publishing house «Kultur-Liga». The aim of the study is to study the development of the organizational structure and economic activities of the cooperative publishing house «Kultur-Liga» in the context of economic history. Methods of research. All components of the study are based on fundamental principles – scientific, historicism, objectivity, system, development, priority of concrete verity, pluralism; and also the methods of knowledge of social and economic processes of social development – analysis, synthesis, problem-chronological, comparative analytical, archaeological, retrospective, statistical, a systematic and integrated approach. Research methodology. In the process of investigating this problem, the fundamental principles were based on economic history and history of economic thought, the Ukrainian and foreign scientists’ works and experts in this area. Results of the study. In the study, we tried to consider the development of the organizational structure and economic activities of the cooperative publishing house «Kultur-Liga» in the context of economic history. The field of application of results. The results of this study can be used in studying issues of economic history and the history of economic thought. Conclusions. Thus, noting the fact that we considered above – the development of the organizational structure and economic and economic activity of the cooperative publishing house «Kultura-Liga», permits to characterize the features of the formation organizational structure of a publishing house, to consider social and professional founders and members, to analyze a system of cooperative management based on a share company. It should be noted that in Ukraine at the present stage of development of the market economy where is dominated by various forms of ownership, a national publishing industry is in a difficult situation. The search of an effective model of the national book publishing is an important today, and so in the study particular attention is paid to own historical experience.

Peculiarities of the national Ukrainian culture in the artistic design of the publications of Kharkov cooperative publishing house «Rukh»

The purpose of the article is to investigate the peculiarities of the national Ukrainian culture in the artistic design of the editions of the Kharkov cooperative publishing house «Rukh». Research methods: Empirical-theoretical methods of analysis, synthesis, deduction are used. From the theoretical methods, a description and interpretation is applied. The use of these methods made it possible to prove that the publications of the Kharkov cooperative publishing house «Rukh» are a highly cultured artistic product, shrouded in the aura of the traditions of Ukrainian culture. It is proved that in the 20-ies. XX century. around the «Rukh» united a circle of like-minded writers, critics, editors, illustrators. Book covers were made by M. Samokish, S. Borovoy, V. Krichevsky. It is established that in the graphic design of the editions the editors used font ensembles, decorative elements and other visual materials created by the most prominent representatives of the artistic circles, in which the Ukrainian tradition is traced. In the design of covers used a variety of frames, ornaments of vegetable origin, stylized with letters. At the same time, minimalism of forms, compositions in a black and white version was quite common. Attention is focused on the works of the famous graphs of the era of the Ukrainian revival, created by the order of the Kharkiv cooperative publishing house «Rukh». The features of the national Ukrainian culture in the artistic design of publications are analyzed. Illustrations, graphic elements, style of execution and technique of the Ukrainian artists cooperating with the publishing house are characterized. The study significantly expands the view on publishing at the stage of the formation of Soviet power. The results can be used to write textbooks and teaching aids on cultural studies, the history of publishing and the history of Ukraine.

У статті розглянуто ключові етапи життєвого та творчого шляху видавця, активного учасника подій, які розгортались в Україні на початку XX століття, Івана Миколайовича Лизанівського. На жаль, недостатня обізнаність широкої громадськості в його суспільній і професійній діяльності робить малопомітною особистість редактора і видавця.Джерельною базою дослідження слугують праці, присвячені діяльності Української партії соціалістів-революціонерів, до якої свого часу належав видавець; архівні документи та спогади.Показано умови, які сприяли формуванню світогляду І. Лизанівського. Розкрито роль цієї непересічної особистості в процесі діяльності Центральної Ради, уряду УНР та Директорії. Акцентовано на його співпраці з класиком української літератури І. Франком. Особливу увагу приділено діяльності І. Лизанівського як редактора і члена Правління Харківського кооперативного видавництва «Рух». Виділено й описано характерні особливості редакторського опрацювання творів української літератури, їх рецензування.Використано історичний, історико-біографічний, аналітико-синтетичний методи.Наукова новизна полягає у тому, що повернення правди про забуті імена є питанням досить актуальним. А тому прізвища Івана та Варвари Лизанівських варті того, щоб повернути їх до науково-документальної серії книг «Реабілітовані історією» та офіційно оприлюднити цей факт реабілітації. Діяльність очолюваного І. Лизанівським харківського кооперативного видавництва «Рух» свого часу сприяла духовному зростанню українського народу, підтримці розвитку мови і культури, поглибленню політики українізації. Отже, розглянуте у дослідженні питання суттєво розширює погляд на видавничу справу на етапі становлення радянської влади.

Multivariate flexible Pareto model: Dependency structure, properties and characterizations

The classical multivariate Pareto model, which was referred to by Arnold [Arnold, B.C., 1983. Pareto Distributions. International Co-operative Publishing House], and is used to fit heavy tailed random variables, has serious disadvantages. First, each of its marginals has the same distribution up to location and scale parameters. Secondly, this model has a rigid dependence structure. Furthermore, the independent Pareto marginals do not belong to this model. In this paper, we introduce two multivariate models, whose marginals have different shape parameters and a more flexible dependence structure. Moreover, the independent Pareto marginals model is a special case of one of the suggested models. We also discuss regression and a measure of dependence for these models, along with some relevant inferences. The paper concludes with a numerical study.

An introduction to balanced sequential arrays on the square grid

Abstract Plants grown in large numbers for commercial purposes are usually set out on a regular grid, triangular, square or hexagonal, or possibly a rectangular grid. We need to understand their behaviour when they compete with each other for light, water and nutrients. In a greenhouse, there may be a lamp over each plant, half the plants having their lamps on and half off. The intensity of light falling on any particular plant is determined mainly by whether its own lamp is on, next by the number of its nearest neighbours whose lamps are on, and perhaps also by the number of its second-nearest neighbours whose lamps are on. Such arrays are also used to study competition among different types of plants and, with some extra restrictions, to design field layouts as well. The problem of constructing suitable arrays was introduced in [CORMACK, R. M.: Spatial aspects of competition beween individuals. In: Spatial and Temporal Analysis in Ecology (R. M. Cormack and J. K. Ord, eds.), International Co-operative Publishing House, Fairland, Maryland, USA, 1979] and discussed in [GATES, D. J.: Competition between two types of plants with specified neighbour configurations, Math. Biosci. 48 (1980), 195–209]. Here we consider only the square grid.

Fisher information matrix for the Feller–Pareto distribution

In this paper, the exact form of Fisher information matrix for the Feller–Pareto (FP) distribution is determined. The FP family is a very general unimodal distribution which includes a variety of distributions as special cases. For example: • A hierarchy of Pareto models: Pareto (I), Pareto (II), Pareto (III), and Pareto (IV) (see Arnold (Pareto Distributions, International Cooperative Publishing House, Fairland, MD, 1983)); and • Transformed beta family which in turn includes such general families as Burr, Generalized Pareto, and Inverse Burr (see Klugman et al. (Loss Models: From Data to Decisions, Wiley, New York, 1998)). Application of these distributions covers a wide spectrum of areas ranging from actuarial science, economics, finance to biosciences, telecommunications, and extreme value theory.

Some Distribution Properties of the Sample Species-Diversity Indices and Their Applications

In the area of ecological research the study of species diversity of a community or population seems to have been fully developed. However, the problem of how the distributions and expectations of the sample diversity indices are affected by the population diversity has received little attention. In this paper we show that if the diversities of the communities can be partially ordered through majorization as proposed by Solomon [1979, in Ecological Diversity in Theory and Practice, J. F. Grassle, G. P. Patil, W. K. Smith and C. Taillie (eds), 29-35, Fairland, Maryland: International Co-operative Publishing House], and if the sample sizes remain the same, then the sample diversity indices can be stochastically ordered when the samples are selected at random from the communities either with or without replacement. We also show that, when the sample size becomes large, the sample diversity indices are asymptotically normally distributed. These results can be applied for comparing the diversities of the communities on the basis of the samples, and they yield certain desirable monotonicity properties.
