Mapping “a beautiful mind:” A comparison of the author cocitation PFNets for John Nash, John Harsanyi, and Reinhard Selten—the three winners of the 1994 Nobel Prize for Economics

AbstractWe present the results of an Author Cocitation Analysis focusing on Nash, Harsanyi, and Selten and the top 24–27 authors with which each is cocited in the five years prior to their (1994) receipt of the Nobel Prize for Economics (1989:1993) and the five years following (1995:1999). We explore the different impacts that these three authors' work had on scholarship in these two time periods. Preliminary results show a substantial core of game theory authors anchoring the center of all three PFNets and unique sets of “penumbral” authors frequently cocited with each of the three winners.

Real-time author co-citation mapping for online searching

Author searching is traditionally based on the matching of name strings. Special characteristics of authors as personal names and subject indicators are not considered. This makes it difficult to identify a set of related authors or to group authors by subjects in retrieval systems. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a prototype visualization system to enhance author searching. The system, called AuthorLink, is based on author co-citation analysis and visualization mapping algorithms such as Kohonen’s feature maps and Pathfinder networks. AuthorLink produces interactive author maps in real time from a database of 1.26 million records supplied by the Institute for Scientific Information. The maps show subject groupings and more fine-grained intellectual connections among authors. Through the interactive interface the user can take advantage of such information to refine queries and retrieve documents through point-and-click manipulation of the authors’ names.

Mining a Web Citation Database for author co-citation analysis

Author co-citation analysis (ACA) has been widely used in bibliometrics as an analytical method in analyzing the intellectual structure of science studies. It can be used to identify authors from the same or similar research fields. However, such analysis method relies heavily on statistical tools to perform the analysis and requires human interpretation. Web Citation Database is a data warehouse used for storing citation indices of Web publications. In this paper, we propose a mining process to automate the ACA based on the Web Citation Database. The mining process uses agglomerative hierarchical clustering (AHC) as the mining technique for author clustering and multidimensional scaling (MDS) for displaying author cluster maps. The clustering results and author cluster map have been incorporated into a citation-based retrieval system known as PubSearch to support author retrieval of Web publications.

Revolution or Evolution? A Comparison of Object-Oriented and Structured Systems Development Methods

This paper examines the changes engendered when moving from a structured to an object-oriented systems development approach and reconciles the differing views concerning whether this represents an evolutionary or revolutionary change. Author co-citation analysis is used to elucidate the ideational and conceptual relationships between the two approaches. The difference in conceptual distance at the analysis and design level compared to that at the programming level is explained using Henderson's framework for organizational change. The conceptual shift during analysis and design is considered architectural, whereas for programming it is deemed merely incremental. The managerial implications of these findings are discussed and suggestions for improving the likelihood of success in the adoption of object-oriented systems development methods are provided.

A co-citation analysis of representative authors in philosophy: Examining the relationship between epistemologists and philosophers of science

The relation between philosophy of science and epistemology is studied using the author co-citation technique. Co-citation links among 62 authors – a representative list of various styles and approaches to rationality – were established using the Arts and Humanities Citation Index. Multidimensional scaling results in a two-dimensional map of authors, where the axes represent the subject (philosophy of science to epistemology) and the method (qualitative to quantitative), respectively. The authors on the map can be clustered into more or less coherent groups at different levels of resolution.

Scholarly communication as a socioecological system

Among Belver C. Griffith's many contributions to disciplinary communication is the idea that science and scholarship at large constitute a social system to be investigated empirically. This paper reports findings of an author co-citation analysis of the field of human behavioral ecology that expands Griffith's concept of the social system of scientific communication to fit a socioecological framework. Cluster analysis and multidimensional scaling techniques are used to characterize the research specialty at large and portray five respondents' individual resource maps. The techniques reveal co-citation relationships among authors whose work they had referenced in recent articles. Survey data on searching and handling behaviors for an aggregated sample of 180 cited references are correlated with core-periphery zones of the individual maps. Findings that types of socially mediated communication and distinctive information foraging behaviors correlate with different zones of a bibliographic microhabitat support an interpretation that active specialty members conform to foraging efficiency principles as predicted by prey-choice models from optimal foraging theory.

Fragmentation of the Intellectual Structure of Political Communication Study: Some Empirical Evidence

This study applies a method of author co-citation analysis to examine the intellectual structure of political communication study. Fifty one influential authors were selected from active members of the Political Communication Divisions of the International Communication Association (ICA), the National Communication Association (NCA), and the American Political Science Association (APSA). The results of the multidimensional scaling analysis and cluster analysis of these 51 selected authors' co-citation patterns show that intellectual fragmentation exists in political communication research; scholars with different academic backgrounds exhibit specialties using particular research approaches to study certain subjects in the field; scholars do not have much information exchange, and thus they are intellectually separate and confined within the boundaries of each fragment. The findings of this quantitative study complements and cross-validates the assessment made by other traditional qualitative reviews about the field.

Mapping the intellectual structure of information retrieval studies: an author co-citation analysis, 1987-1997

Author co-citation analysis (ACA) has been used to explore changes in the intellectual base of the information retrieval (IR) field over two consecutive time periods: 1987-1991 and 1992-1997. Thirty-nine highly cited IR researchers were selected as the research sample. Multidimensional scaling (MDS) and clustering techniques (CT) were used to create the two-dimensional maps to display the dynamic intellectual structure of IR, based on scholars citing their work over these two time periods. Factor analysis (FA) has been used to reveal the ‘breadth’ of the authors’ research areas. ACA offers a good technique that contributes to the understanding of intellectual structure in the sciences and possibly in other areas to the extent that those areas rely on formal scholarly communication such as serial publications. Nonetheless, obvious drawbacks exist in ACA. These include the subjective nature of the interpretation of results, the difficulty of readily identifying clusters and the inability to distinguish collaborative research relationships between authors. Thus, ACA by itself is insufficient. However, ACA can be enhanced significantly when combined with FA to give a more accurate and useful picture of the MDS results.

This study presents an extensive domain analysis of a discipline—information science—in terms of its authors. Names of those most frequently cited in 12 key journals from 1972 through 1995 were retrieved from Social Scisearch via DIALOG. The top 120 were submitted to author co-citation analyses, yielding automatic classifications relevant to histories of the field. Tables and graphics reveal: (1) The disciplinary and institutional affiliations of contributors to information science; (2) the specialty structure of the discipline over 24 years; (3) authors' memberships in 1 or more specialties; (4) inertia and change in authors' positions on 2-dimensional subject maps over 3 8-year subperiods, 1972–1979, 1980–1987, 1988–1995; (5) the 2 major subdisciplines of information science and their evolving memberships; (6) “canonical” authors who are in the top 100 in all three subperiods; (7) changes in authors' eminence and influence over the subperiods, as shown by mean co-citation counts; (8) authors with marked changes in their mapped positions over the subperiods; (9) the axes on which authors are mapped, with interpretations; (10) evidence of a paradigm shift in information science in the 1980s; and (11) evidence on the general nature and state of integration of information science. Statistical routines include ALSCAL, INDSCAL, factor analysis, and cluster analysis with SPSS; maps and other graphics were made with DeltaGraph. Theory and methodology are sufficiently detailed to be usable by other researchers. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Searching for bridges between disciplines: an author co-citation analysis on the research into scholarly communication

An author co-citation analysis (ACA) on the research into scholarly communication in sociology of science and in information science within a 20-year period is presented. The question at issue is: to what extent and in what ways the research on scholarly communication brings together the sociology of science and information science, i.e. if the research on scholarly communication acts as a bridge between these two disciplines. It is natural to think of the research on scholarly communication as a common field for these two disciplines, but, by analysing the co-citations accorded to the researchers within both disciplines, one can define the intensity of the relationship or whether it really exists. The ACA suggests that the research of scholarly communication is not enough to be their common denomi nator: sociologists and information scientists mostly stay in their own respective territories. Finally, as the feasibility of ACA is evaluated in the light of the results, the weaknesses of the method become evident.

Mapping the intellectual structure of research in decision support systems through author cocitation analysis (1971–1993)

This study applies factor analysis of an author cocitation frequency matrix derived from a database file that consists of a total of 23,768 cited reference records taken from 944 citing articles. Factor analysis extracted eleven factors consisting of six major areas of DSS research (group DSS, foundations, model management, interface systems, multicriteria DSS, and implementation) and five contributing disciplines (multiple criteria decision making, cognitive science, organizational science, artificial intelligence, and systems science). This research provides hard evidence that the decision support system has made meaningful progress over the past two decades and is in the process of solidifying its domain and demarcating its reference disciplines. Especially, much progress has been made in the subareas of model management such as representation, model base processing, model integration, and artificial intelligence application to model management leading towards the development of a theory of models. To facilitate the transition from the pre- to post-paradigm period in DSS research, this study has completed important groundwork.

Mapping intellectual structure of a scientific subfield through author cocitations

This article provides a test of the utility of author cocitation analysis for empirically deriving groupings of intellectual leaders in a scientific subspecialty. Methodologically, it partially replicates the procedure employed by White and Griffith (1981). It provides a partial test of the underlying assumptions of the method, its veracity, and its interpretive and substantive application. Interpretive caveats are given, and additional methodological and statistical manipulations are proposed to enhance the future utility of author cocitation analysis to map prevailing intellectual structures within science

Co-citation Analysis of the Scientific Literature of Innovation Research Traditions

This article explores the interrelationships between the interdisciplinary specialties of the diffusion of innovations and technology transfer. Bibliometric data were utilized to examine the formal communication structures of these two specialties and to identify how and to what extent their literatures were related. A modified author co-citation analysis was performed to identify the interrelationships among the works of scholars in these two specialties. Co-citation analysis has been used to study other research fields and to identify with considerable accuracy the membership of research specialties. The article identifies the ideational links or cognitive relations between the works of the diffusion of innovations and the technology transfer scholars. Rip and Courtial (1984) stated that co-citation, like other scientometric techniques, is useful for analyzing developments in science "provided one is prepared to take the content of scientific articles into account" (p. 381). Accordingly, highly cited documents are identified as exemplars and used to interpret the data.

Mapping the Intellectual Structure of MIS, 1980-1985: A Co-Citation Analysis

This study is the second of two studies which assess the intellectual development of MIS. The present study documents the current intellectual structure of MIS research based on an author co-citation analysis. Five invisible colleges, or informal clusters of research activity, were identified (foundations; psychological approaches to MIS design and use; MIS management; organizational approaches to MIS design and use; and curriculum). When contrasted with the earlier study, these results suggest that MIS has made significant progress toward a cumulative research tradition.

The Intellectual Development of Management Information Systems, 1972–1982: A Co-Citation Analysis

Researchers in all academic disciplines benefit from an understanding of the intellectual development of their field. This understanding is essential for conducting studies which build systematically on prior research. The purpose of this study is to document the intellectual development of the ideas represented by published research in Management Information Systems (MIS) based on an author co-citation analysis. The resulting mapping is intended to serve as a benchmark for future assessments of MIS as a field as well as a means for documenting the emergence of new research specialties. The study sought to identify (1) the subfields which constitute MIS research, (2) the reference disciplines of these subfields, (3) the diffusion of the ideas represented by these subfields to other disciplines, and (4) which of these subfields represent active areas of current MIS research. Nine invisible colleges, or informal clusters of research were uncovered. These nine empirically defined conceptual groupings collectively define the intellectual foundations of MIS as well as the forces currently shaping MIS research. Four of the clusters represent early MIS research themes which are still popular, based on subsequent citation patterns. Despite the centrality of the concept of the organization to widely-accepted definitions of MIS, the results suggest that MIS research is not well-grounded in organization theory nor have MIS research results been widely diffused in the organizational literature. Suggestions for developing a better link between MIS and organizational theory are presented based on the concept of organizational effectiveness.
