The purpose of the study is to establish the effect of artificial ultraviolet lighting on the content of biolo-gically active substances in strawberry fruits using the example of the Asia variety, which is widely used in production. The study was conducted in 2019–2021 in the Lipetsk Region. Transplantation of strawberries under conditions of a growing season was carried out by already rooted adult bushes with a clod of earth. The water-air regime of the soil under artificial lighting conditions was similar to open ground. Under artificial lighting, garden strawberry plants of the Asia variety bloomed 10 days later, had a smaller fruit weight, and had a lower content of organic acids and dry soluble substances than under the sun. Plants accumulated the same amount of water-soluble pectin substances regardless of the nature of the lighting. The content of yellow coloring substances from the vitamin P group – flavonols, as well as binders from the same group – catechins in strawberry fruits did not depend on the nature of the lighting. Strawberry plants under ultraviolet light accumulated the same amount of ascorbic acid as under sunlight. Compared to sunlight under artificial ultraviolet, strawberry fruits contained the least amount of pigments, including carotenoids and β-carotene. A significantly higher level of pectin substances, anthocyanins, tannins and coloring substances, including tannin, in strawberries under sunlight was established in comparison with artificial ultraviolet. Regardless of the nature of lighting, strawberry plants had the same water content and pH of the fruits and accumulated the same amount of ascorbic acid, flavonols, catechins and water-soluble pectin substances.

Assessment of Soil Pollution by Metallic Trace Elements (MTE): Case of Environment of Ruashi Mining/Haut-Katanga (DR Congo)

The main objective of this research was to assess the level of soil contamination of Ruashi Mining sites and its surroundings by metallic trace elements. The samples of the soils studied were taken during the month of June 2020. The clod of earth was taken at a depth of 20 cm and 40 cm by a manual auger and was packed in a plastic bag before the analyzes in the laboratory. After drying, they were ground and then sieved to 2 mm mesh. The Cd, Cr, Co, Cu and Zn were determined by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF). The results showed that all the soils of the Ruashi sites were amply contaminated by Co, the soils of Ruashi 1 and 3 are contaminated with Cr while the soils of theR uashi 4 are contaminated with Cu. The study of the pollution index revealed that the soils of the Ruashi have multiple contamination because the PI is greater than 1 except for the soils of the Ruashi 4 whose PI value is 0.97. Hence it is imperative to protect the ecosystems surrounding the mining sites of the Ruashi.

Allah Almighty commanded the angels and shaitans to kowtow to men. All angels were always obedient to God's commands and prostrated themselves to the first man, the Prophet Adam AS, while shaitan was reluctant to kowtow because he felt better because he was created from fire while man was created from a clod of earth. The pride of the shaitan caused Allah to impose the punishment that the shaitan took out of heaven. However, shaitan pleaded for the punishment to be suspended by vowing he would tempt people until the end of time. Therefore, shaitan both in the form of jinn and man always tempts to do things that Allah Almighty forbids.

ОПЫТ ПОСАДКИ КРУПНОМЕРНЫХ ХВОЙНЫХ ДРЕВЕСНЫХ РАСТЕНИЙ В ВЕСЕННЕ-ЛЕТНИЙ ПЕРИОД НА КРАЙНЕМ СЕВЕРЕ

The first experience of transplanting large-sized coniferous dendrointroducents (Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, Larix sibirica Ledeb.) in the spring-summer period without preliminary prepara-tion of the root system in the urban conditions of the Polar region was presented. Four specimens of middle-aged plants of both species were selected. The transplant was carried out with the max-imum use of mechanized equipment, which ensures good preservation of the lump and the tree it-self. There were four mutually related stages of work (preparatory, digging out plants, transporta-tion, planting), the quality of which depends on the success of plant survival. A brief description of the decorative qualities, morphometric parameters and the state of the experimental plants has been given. It has shown that due to the peculiarities of the soil and the location of the root system in coniferous introduced species, a clod of earth should be at least 60 cm thick, with a diameter of 110 to 130 cm. The main agrotechnical methods for the creation and care of plantings from large-sized plants were given.

Prey-caching in the Nankeen Kestrel Falco cenchroides, and a review of caching in other Australian falcons

We describe two instances of a Nankeen Kestrel Falco cenchroides caching a House Mouse Mus musculus in winter: (1) beneath ground vegetation, and (2) beneath a clod of earth in a ploughed field. As caching is seldom reported in this or other Australian falcons, we review reports of caching by Australian falcons, and by Northern Hemisphere kestrels in which the habit is well studied.

The starting point of the paper is the fact - marginalized in the early modern period - that knowledge of the spherical shape of the earth was known throughout the Middle Ages, so that this model in Llull's work became "such an ordinary matter" "that he occasionally no longer describes it explicitly". In fact, traces of the cosmological model can be found already in the early Libre de la contemplació de Déus (1372) and four years later in the Liber Chaos, which "almost inevitably necessitates the notion of the spherical earth in the midst of the universe." The spherical shape is also the starting point for the theoretical situating of the Christian idea of hell and heaven in the Doctrina Pueril, written in the 80s, while in the later writings of Félix. Libre de les meravelles del mon and Arbre de ciència, as well as in the Liber Proverbiorum, the sphere model can only be inferred implicitly. Finally, in the Tractatus novus de Astronomia, written in Paris in 1297, the term "clod of earth" ("complexio terrae") applied to Saturn indicates a conception of celestial bodies that is closer to the shape of a sphere than to the conception of a disk.

“Kilimanjaro”1

This is not an overly ambitious paper. What I would like to do is to take a thesis that most people would regard as wildly implausible, and convince you that it is, in fact, false. What's worse, the argument I shall give is by no means airtight, though I hope it's reasonably convincing. The thesis has to do with the fuzzy boundaries of terms that refer to familiar middle-sized objects, terms like ‘Kilimanjaro’ and ‘the tallest mountain in Africa.’ It is intuitively clear (though not beyond doubt — see Timothy Williamson's book Vagueness) that Kilimanjaro has a fuzzy boundary, so that there are some clods of earth at the base of the mountain for which there isn't anything, either in our practices in using the word ‘Kilimanjaro’ or in the facts of geography, that determines an answer to the question whether the clod is a part of Kilimanjaro.

Timon of Athens – a Legendary Figure?

In his last days, after his defeat at Actium, M. Antonhis sojourned in solitude by the sea declaring that he was going to live like Timon, since the injuries and ingratitude which he hadsuffered from his friends had taught him, like Timon, to distrust and detest all mankind. So both Strabo (17.1.9) and Plutarch relate. Plutarch explains that this man Timon was a citizen of Athens who lived at the time of the Peloponnesian War, to judge from plays of Aristophanes and Plato Comicus, in which Timon was held up to ridicule as a surly misanthrope who repulsed all friendly advances but displayed unwonted cordiality towards the brilliant young politician Alcibiades, because he divined, and gleefully predicted, that Alcibiades would do infinite mischieftoAthens (Ant.69–70; Alc. 16). The reference to the ingratitude of Timon's friends is illumined by Lucian's dialogue Timon, or the Misanthrope, in which Timon, identified as son of Echecratides and demotes of Colyttus, has lavished his patrimony on flattering friends who abandon him once his funds are exhausted, and in consequence he has been reduced to labouring in the fields. Luckily he digs up a crock of gold, and when his former friends reappear one by one in the hope of battening on him again, he repulses them with blows and clods of earth.

Response of Males of Limonius californicus (Mann.) (Coleoptera: Elateridae) to a Sex Attractant Separable by Paper Chromatography

In the course of recent field studies in southern Alberta on the behaviour of adults of the sugar-beet wireworm, Limonius californicus (Mann.), it has been observed that the males spend much of their time after emergence resting on small clods of earth with their heads pointed upward into the breeze and with their antennae waving as though testing for odours. When they appeared to scent a female they moved into the breeze, crawling or flying, depending on the velocity of the wind. As they neared the female they became increasingly agitated, but when in close proximity to her they seemed confused and often passed within an inchof her. Eventually one of them located her and mating occurred almost immediately. The remaining males finally dispersed after crawling repeatedly around and over the copulating pair. These observations suggested that the females, soon aftcr emerging, release a sex attractant.

Ploughing as a Factor in Control of the European Corn Borer (Pyrausta Nubilalis Hubner) in Ontario Canada

Clean ploughing either in the fall or spring is the important control measure in the Canadian infestation in the disposal of that portion of the European Corn Borer population left in the field in the stubble and refuse after the removal of the crop. The larvae in the material ploughed down practically all come to the surface sooner or later with a very slight mortality. When the ploughing is done in the very early fall most of the larvae come to the surface before winter. With later ploughings an increasing proportion fail to come to the surface and remain below ground till spring. Following spring ploughings the larvae come to the surface in a similar manner and at a rate depending somewhat upon the date of ploughing. In all cases the upward movement is practically complete by June 5th. After the larvae come to the surface, which they do at night, they wander about somewhat; a small proportion enter the crop refuse if any is upon the surface and eventually come to maturity as moths, the balance, or in the absence of suitable shelter all the larvae, settle under clods of earth or in the soil and fail to produce sufficient moths to be of real importance. The larvae in the open soil simply disappear and little is known quantitatively about the various factors which cause this reduction. In a field where the refuse contained 33,800 larvae per acre, clean ploughing in spring or fall resulted in the virtual annihilation of the larval population by the time that pupation would normally be expected the following year.

Littles Expedition to Omi and the Tibetan Border 1

A HOLIDAY trip from Central China (Chung-King), through the red sandstone basin of western Sze Chuan to the granite frontiers of Tibet, and back again by the traditional water-highway of the Yangtse, is not an experience which falls within the reach of every mercantile explorer in the East; and it derives additional interest in Mr. Little's case from the fact that he was accompanied by his wife. The story of the expedition is told in the form of a diary, a form in which it is almost impossible to avoid a certain amount of monotonous reiteration of incident in the daily record of progress, and which is, perhaps, a little too official in its method for an ordinary traveller's tale; but it is interesting all through, and the deductions which Mr. Little draws from his observations afford valuable food for reflection to those who look to the opening up of China to western methods of economic development. From Chung King to Kia ting, the town which lies at the foot of the classical Omi (the Fusilama of western China), Mr. Little and his wife adopted the Chinese traditional mode of transport, which consists of a sedan chair carried on the shoulders of coolies; and it is a method which, in the present stage-, of Chinese social advancement, secures for a traveller as-much respect and attention as a coach-and-four would in-England. It at once lifts him morally and physically above the steaming crowds of humanity which, in a region which is free from the depleting processes of famine, swarm together in one great pitiless struggle for existence. The whole basin of the Yangtse to the foot of the western mountains presents the same aspect of overcrowded population. Every acre of available soil is cultivated, every yard of productive land is occupied. There is no room to pitch even the smallest of tents, and travellers have perforce to put up with the accommodation afforded by the indigenous hotel. It is the varied nature of the sort of entertainment which is found at these Chinese inns, with the everlasting accompaniment of personal unrestrained curiosity on the part of a people who look on all foreign devils (especially a feminine devil) as fair game for their inquisitiveness, which forms the leading feature in Mr. Little's account of his outward journey.. The trip was made in 1897, and it is worthy of remark (àpropos of more recent events in China) that even then Mr. Little was able to discern a very considerable change for the worse in the attitude of the people towards strangers; and this change had taken place during the previous ten years. Fifteen years before Mr. Little's journey that delightful writer and traveller, Baber, had visited western Sre Chuan and Mount Omi, and his account of his travels certainlytends to confirm Mr. Little's view that a growing antipathy to foreign incursions was gradually accumulating which would eventually tend to mischievous results. Our travellers were occasionally treated to something worse than the derisive jeers of the townspeople. “Clods of earth and cabbage-stalks” now and then followed the maledictions of the crowd. And yet there was much good-natured hospitality and courtesy frequently shown both by priests and people. How far the interference of missionaries with the old traditions of a form of Buddhism which seems to be of a far higher and purer type in western China than anything in Tibet, may have influenced the minds of the people is open to question. Mr. Little is evidently doubtful on the points With every desire to give missionaries credit for their devoted spirit of enterprise, he seems to think that their efforts in the work of regeneration have not always been wisely directed.

The Departure of Swallows

“E. P.” mentions in NATURE of October 22, a date, somewhere about October 20, I presume, which he considers is an unusual one for swallows. Now, though the bulk of the swallows have left by this time, it is by no means unusual to see them later on in the year. In 1894 I saw swallows in Kent, in the neighbourhood of Tonbridge, on October 20, 21, 25 and 27, and the last one on November 11; it was flitting about a village in a bewildered sort of way, with a crowd of village boys throwing mud and clods of earth at it.
