Basic school teachers’ personality type as determinant of classroom management in Lagos State, Nigeria

Teachers encounter many problems in the classroom and amongst is classroom management. Classroom management pose a problem to teachers especially the novice teachers who are not privileged to undergo the training of teaching profession. Teachers’ personality type play an important role in whether to increase positive behaviours or decrease negative behaviours among the students in classroom environment. This study therefore examined teachers’ personality type as determinant of classroom management in Lagos State. Descriptive method of research was used for this study. The respondent comprised of 180 teachers selected from 15 schools in Lagos State. Two instruments were used in gathering data for the study. Mean rating and Pearson Product Moment Coefficient were used to answer and test research questions and hypotheses respectively. Findings revealed that teachers personality determines their classroom management.

INTERRELATIONSHIPS AMONG COLLECTIVE PERSONALITY, ATTITUDES TOWARD INTERGENERATIONAL SUPPORT, AND CO-RESIDENCE

This study investigates if collective personality influences positive attitude towards family caregiving and support for elderly parents, which, in turn, engenders positive attitude toward intergenerational coresidence. To test the hypothesis, the author examines the interconnections among collective personality; attitude towards family caregiving, and attitude towards support for aged parents; and attitude towards intergenerational coresidence in the U.S. The survey data is collected from total 67 undergraduate students in classroom environment. Particular attention is given to their attitude towards family caregiving and aged parents support. Results show that those three predictors are positively correlated with the attitude towards intergenerational coresidence i.e. respondents with more positive attitude towards family caregiving and aged parents support and with collective personality are more likely to have positive attitude towards intergenerational coresidence. Among the three predictors, collective personality is positively connected to the attitudes towards family caregiving and support for aged parents. A positive correlation is also observed between two attitude predictors i.e. respondents with more positive attitudes towards the family caregiving are likely to have positive attitude towards the support for aged parents and vice versa. The results highlights the important influence of collective personality, and attitude towards family caregiving and support for older parents on the intergenerational coresidence, even in the individualistic society.

Provision of Classroom Environment for Students with Hearing Impairment: Case Study of a Special School in Karachi City

This quantitative case study was conducted at a special school in Karachi city to find out the provision of classroom environment for students with hearing impairment. The data collected through a checklist was analyzed through descriptive statistics and One-Sample Test. The study concluded that the teachers consider the special needs of their students while organizing classroom environment for their students with hearing impairment. Most of them were using multi-sensory resources and learning equipment but there was a lack of provision of instructional area in classroom for different activities that is why majority of the teachers always teach whole class at a time and never provide group activities either in form of small groups or in pair of students. Although mostly the classes have rows of desk for students with hearing impairment but sometimes the teachers could manage to allow students to work alone. Unobtrusive Behavioral Analysis of Students in Classroom Environment Using Non-Verbal Cues

Pervasive intelligent learning environments can be made more personalized by adapting the teaching strategies according to the students’ emotional and behavioral engagements. The students’ engagement analysis helps to foster those emotions and behavioral patterns that are beneficial to learning, thus improving the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process. Unobtrusive student engagement analysis is performed using the students’ non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, hand gestures, and body postures. Though there exist several techniques for classifying the engagement of a single student present in a single image frame, there are limited works on the students’ engagement analysis in a classroom environment. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network architecture for unobtrusive students’ engagement analysis using non-verbal cues. The proposed architecture is trained and tested on faces, hand gestures and body postures in the wild of more than 350 students present in a classroom environment, with each test image containing multiple students in a single image frame. The data annotation is performed using the gold standard study, and the annotators reliably agree with Cohen’s <inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$\kappa = 0.43$ </tex-math></inline-formula> . We obtained 71% accuracy for the students’ engagement level classification. Further, a pre-test/post-test analysis was performed, and it was observed that there is a positive correlation between the students’ engagement and their test performance.

Choosing a winning team for mixed medley events

The swimming medley event consists of teams of four swimmers (all men or all women) competing to complete a medley of four strokes in the quickest time. A new idea has emerged where swimming teams of two women and two men may now compete against each other in the same medley event. This new problem may be formulated as a classical assignment problem with an additional side constraint. We propose a simple back-of-the-envelope algorithm for selecting the fastest mixed team. The mixed-medley model is also generalised to other possible sports events (e.g., in gymnastics and track and field). Reformulating the problem by standard Lagrangian relaxation allows us to solve it in an iterative fashion with the well-known Hungarian method. Thus, the problem is suitable in a classroom environment for students and practitioners of OR.

Study of Implementing Automated Attendance System Using Face Recognition Technique

Authentication is a significant issue in system control in computer based communication. Human face recognition is an important branch of biometric verification and has been widely used in many applications, such as video monitor system, human-computer interaction, and door control system and network security. This paper describes a method for Student's Attendance System which will integrate with the face recognition technology using Personal Component Analysis (PCA) algorithm. The system will record the attendance of the students in class room environment automatically and it will provide the facilities to the faculty to access the information of the students easily by maintaining a log for clock-in and clock-out time.

Opinion of Students on Seating Furniture Used in Classroom

Classroom furniture is an important facility that helps in providing a conducive, comfortable and functional classroom environment for students in an educational institution. The comfort and functional utility of the classroom furniture depends on its physical design in relationship to the physical structure and biomechanics of human body. Furniture in classroom should suit the anthropometrical demands of user and the task demands. An observation cum evaluation study was made to explore the types of furniture used by graduate students in classroom environment and were drawn their opinion on the design. The outcome of the study revealed that four types of furniture were found in use and each type differed in its design features and its dimensions. Some of the features like seat pan width and height, backrest height, thigh clearance, footrest, lumbar support were found to be incompatible to the users.
